This is Undaunted Life of Man's Podcast.
0:23
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:25
Let's get into it.
0:26
Listen to advice and accept instruction
0:29
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
0:31
That is Proverbs 19.20.
0:32
Guys, welcome to 2024.
0:34
You made it to 2024.
0:37
And guys, I'm so excited for this episode.
0:38
I'm excited to record this basically every single year
0:42
because this ends up being the most shared podcast
0:45
every single year.
0:46
That's not a particular interview with a huge person.
0:49
And we just love it.
0:50
We love that you guys love this content.
0:52
And I'll get more into the content
0:53
'cause I know there's a lot of new people to the show
0:55
that maybe have not heard this one.
0:56
But before we get into that, guys,
0:58
if you want to give us a new year's present, right?
1:00
So you're at the first week of January of 2024.
1:03
You're feeling great.
1:04
How about you leave us a review
1:05
and share our show with somebody else?
1:06
So if you like our show and you want to give us five stars,
1:08
make sure you go ahead and do that.
1:09
Reminder, we are a donation-based ministry.
1:11
So we got a lot of donations at the end of last year
1:14
from the year-end giving folks.
1:15
So we're so happy for that.
1:17
But the only reason we're able to keep the lights on
1:18
is because we have donors just like you.
1:20
And how about you treat yourself
1:22
at the beginning of this year
1:23
with some sweet origin gear and some Jaco feel.
1:25
So guys, I know a lot of you guys are kind of kicking up
1:28
the workout to the side of new year
1:31
and kind of new year, new me.
1:33
And we're going to get into that more here a little bit later.
1:35
But some of you guys, you need your protein.
1:37
You need your creatine.
1:38
You need some energy drinks.
1:39
You need all that stuff.
1:40
You can get that on the Jaco feel side.
1:42
It's all made here in the United States
1:43
by a great American company.
1:45
Use the promo code undaunted to get 10% off
1:47
so you can check all of that out and and and.
1:50
About halfway through the show today,
1:52
we are going to announce another brand
1:54
that we are partnering with that will help
1:55
take your spiritual resilience to that next level.
1:58
So I know on the Jaco feel side
2:00
and you know on the origin side,
2:01
you've got the geese and the work boots and all that
2:02
and all that stuff is great.
2:04
But on the spiritual side,
2:06
you need something to make that go to the next level
2:08
and to level up there as well.
2:10
So make sure you stick with us until about halfway
2:12
through this episode whenever we drop that.
2:14
But on this episode today, I just, I get so excited.
2:17
I'm like so excited.
2:17
It's a little bit cool here in my studio
2:19
'cause I like to kind of, you know,
2:20
warm myself up with the content I'm going to do.
2:22
But we're going to continue our beginning of the year
2:25
tradition with our ways to avoid being a crappy man series.
2:29
Okay.
2:29
And so we got the top 17 ways to avoid being a crappy man
2:33
in 2024.
2:34
Now some of you guys have been here since the beginning
2:36
and so you hear these every year.
2:38
And guys like to use this list of myriad of different ways.
2:41
Guys will save this episode and listen to it.
2:43
You know, maybe once a month as a reminder,
2:45
I know guys that have listened to this episode
2:47
and they've actually typed out the top ways
2:49
to avoid being a crappy man.
2:50
And they put it on their mirror so that, you know,
2:52
when they're getting ready in the morning,
2:54
they can check out that list.
2:55
Some people save it on their background.
2:57
Some people type a note in their phone.
2:59
And it's just a good reminder of kind of how to put their year
3:01
in order and some of the things that they need
3:03
to remain focused on.
3:04
But let me tell you how I went about putting
3:06
this year's list together.
3:08
Because as always, there will be some things on this list
3:11
that are the same as last year's list.
3:13
So the top 17 ways to avoid being a crappy man in 2023,
3:17
you're going to see a lot of those make a reappearance
3:19
on this podcast.
3:20
And then there will be some that are new for 2024.
3:24
So some were just on last year.
3:25
Some have been on every single year's.
3:27
But then as the year goes through,
3:28
I kind of make notes to myself of some things
3:30
I want guys to be thinking about.
3:32
And so this year it's going to be like, you know,
3:35
a constant one when that's on most lists.
3:37
And then it's going to go to one that's new for this year.
3:39
And then it's going to go to one that's standard.
3:41
And then it will go to a new one for this year.
3:43
And the thing that I like most about recording this podcast
3:45
and then we'll jump right in.
3:47
The thing that I love the most about this
3:49
is it's the podcast I record in the year
3:51
that has the least amount of notes.
3:53
Like if you could see my notes,
3:55
all I have on my notes are the 17 ways
3:59
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
4:02
So I don't know what I'm going to say
4:04
because I put this list together about a week or two ago.
4:06
It's going to be recorded about a week
4:08
before you guys hear it.
4:09
And so I can't remember all 17 of them.
4:12
So I'm just going to have to kind of flow
4:13
with whatever is on the list.
4:14
But guys, this is a great episode to share.
4:17
I'll tell you that from the very beginning.
4:18
I know that sounds self-serving
4:20
and maybe a little bit narcissistic,
4:21
but this is the one where guys are like,
4:23
look man, here are the things I need to do
4:25
to get more spiritually, mentally and physically resilient.
4:27
Here are the things I need to do to be a better man,
4:29
a better father, a better husband, a better Christian,
4:31
a better whatever brother, a church attendee,
4:34
whatever the thing is, share this episode around.
4:37
It's super easy to do.
4:38
If you're listening on Spotify,
4:39
it's two clicks, two buttons, right?
4:42
Same thing on Apple Podcast, same thing on YouTube.
4:44
Just share this thing around.
4:45
So here we go guys.
4:47
Here are your ways to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
4:50
And these are in no particular order,
4:52
but make sure you stick with us all the way to the end.
4:54
So here's number one, again, in no particular order.
4:57
Become a weapon.
4:58
Now, this is a derivative of what we called in 2023,
5:03
learn to fight.
5:05
Because when you say learn to fight,
5:07
some people think they already know how to fight
5:09
'cause there are those people out there that are like,
5:11
you know, I'm just going to see red, you know, right?
5:13
And if something were to happen
5:14
and someone were to assault my wife
5:16
or someone were to try to do something to my kids,
5:18
I would just see red and I'd be able to react.
5:21
And you are a fool if you believe that.
5:23
Like bless you if you believe that.
5:26
'Cause if you have no fight training,
5:29
unless you're like 400 pounds with abs
5:31
and, you know, six foot 10 or something like that,
5:33
okay, then you can probably get away
5:34
with not training that much
5:36
and not really knowing the ins and outs
5:37
of throwing a proper punch
5:38
or taking someone to the ground.
5:40
But for the rest of us normies, we have to train.
5:43
And here's the other thing.
5:46
There are people that don't know how to fight physically
5:50
with their body, but they know how to use a firearm.
5:53
Maybe they've gone to some training,
5:55
maybe they carry in the appendix position
5:57
and they can pull it out and get on target really fast.
5:59
And maybe they've learned how to fight
6:01
with, you know, fixed blade knives
6:02
like this one here from Montana knife company,
6:04
like maybe they carry that on their ankle
6:05
and they can get after with that.
6:07
But what a lot of these people have failed to realize
6:10
is you're not always going to have
6:11
those things at your disposal.
6:13
You're not always going to have your concealed carry weapon.
6:17
Maybe you get in a fight in an airport.
6:19
Maybe your own vacation, you had to fly somewhere.
6:21
Maybe you're out of the country
6:22
or just not where you normally are
6:24
and you didn't travel within your weaponry.
6:26
And when you got on the ground,
6:27
it wasn't the first thing you did.
6:28
You didn't go to a gun store and buy a new firearm
6:30
that you were going to leave there with somebody
6:32
or go, you know, get something that you can fight with
6:34
a knife or something like that.
6:36
And so in that scenario, what are you going to do?
6:38
Like what's your plan?
6:42
Again, I just talk to these guys all the time
6:44
that are just completely delusional
6:46
about their ability to defend themselves and their families.
6:49
And these are big guys.
6:50
Little guys is typically worse with big guys
6:52
because they think, well, I'm six foot two.
6:53
I'm no one's ever going to mess with me.
6:55
It's like, really?
6:56
You want me to show you a dozen videos
6:58
that I can find in two seconds
6:59
of huge guys getting smoked by somebody else?
7:03
And so in 2024, this is the year that you need to focus
7:07
on becoming a weapon yourself.
7:09
I'm not anti-firearm.
7:10
I think you should carry.
7:11
I'm not anti-fix blade weapons.
7:13
I think you should carry those as well.
7:15
But if you don't know how to take someone to the ground
7:17
and keep them there until help arrives,
7:19
you're not doing what you should be doing.
7:24
If you don't know how to end a fight
7:26
once you get it to the ground, right,
7:28
by passing the person unconscious or breaking a limb
7:31
which will cause them to not really want to fight anymore,
7:34
then what exactly are you prepared for?
7:37
Also, if you don't know how to throw a proper punch,
7:40
throw a kick, any of those types of things,
7:42
if you don't know how to create space with somebody
7:45
to where you can run away,
7:46
which is probably the best first line of defense
7:49
in these types of situations, then what are you doing?
7:52
Again, when the wolf comes for you
7:56
or when you find yourself in that kinetic situation
7:58
where you need to be able to physically respond,
8:00
you will fall to the level of your training.
8:02
And so if you are not a weapon yourself,
8:05
you will become a victim and think about it this way.
8:08
If you're in a situation
8:09
where you're trying to defend somebody else,
8:11
whether it be a family member, a loved one,
8:13
or a complete stranger, if you're ill-equipped to do that,
8:16
what makes you think you're going to get lucky?
8:19
And I want to be completely clear here.
8:21
So you need to be training one of the following
8:24
because when I say learn to become a weapon,
8:25
I do not mean karate, I do not mean wingchung,
8:29
I do not mean kung fu, I do not mean jik kundo,
8:32
I don't mean any of these fighting modalities
8:34
that basically have no basis in reality
8:37
and wouldn't work in a real fight
8:38
in any circumstance ever.
8:40
If you want evidence of that, watch the UFC
8:42
and watch the different styles of fighting
8:44
that are represented and tell me why the bullshido stuff
8:47
that you see on Instagram, like the people using people's
8:50
chi and power and like touching them
8:52
on certain spots of their neck and making them pass out,
8:54
just tell me that that stuff's real
8:56
when you watch guys, you know, fight for a living.
8:58
This is what I mean.
8:59
You need to be doing jujitsu and wrestling.
9:02
If you go to a good jujitsu school,
9:04
you're going to get both
9:05
and jujitsu is pretty ubiquitous now,
9:06
it's all over the place, it's exploded.
9:08
I also want you to start training Western boxing
9:12
and or kickboxing.
9:13
So some places you'll be able to get both,
9:15
but typically those are kind of truncated
9:17
or not truncated, but, you know,
9:19
put in their own silos or whatever.
9:21
And so you can maybe find an MMA gym that has all of this,
9:24
but, and the other one that I would add is Muay Thai.
9:27
And so if you're training some sort of a striking modality,
9:31
like Western boxing, kickboxing or Muay Thai,
9:34
and then you add in the ground component of a jujitsu
9:38
and a wrestling and you might even throw judo in there,
9:41
but make sure you are learning ways
9:43
to end the fight on the feet and on the ground
9:47
while realizing that striking can be really fun
9:49
and smacking those pads can sound really awesome.
9:52
And that's all great.
9:53
And I think you should do that.
9:54
But a lot of fights end up on the ground.
9:56
And if this is like a major full on fight,
9:59
like someone that's trying to hurt you or kill you
10:01
or hurt your family or kill your family
10:03
or hurt somebody in public or something like that,
10:06
this is not someone that's going to be okay
10:08
which is point fighting on the feet and, you know,
10:10
touching and going and playing and stuff like that.
10:12
These are people that are going to go rogue,
10:13
they're going to go crazy.
10:14
And that's the type of person you need to be able to get
10:16
onto the ground in your circumstances
10:19
based on the things that you do.
10:21
Get them on the ground and be able to end the fight
10:23
either with a choke or with a break.
10:26
So in 2024, become a weapon.
10:29
All right, number two way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
10:32
When it comes to your family, think of yourself last.
10:36
Okay, so this is a new one for this year.
10:38
Now this is one that's a great reminder for me as well.
10:41
'Cause I like doing things my way.
10:44
I like getting my way.
10:46
I like going to the restaurant I want to go to.
10:47
I like listening to the song I want to listen to.
10:49
I like everybody doing exactly what I want them to do.
10:53
And this is going to come as a shock
10:55
to literally no one here that has a wife and kids.
10:57
That doesn't always seem to matter, does it?
11:00
Your wife has a mind of her own and her own preferences.
11:03
Your kids certainly have a crazy mind of their own
11:06
and their own preferences.
11:07
But I'll say that I thought of this one
11:09
because Ryan from the forging table,
11:11
so or the horn as he might have been called.
11:14
I remember him talking about a vacation
11:16
that he went on with his family
11:17
and he just kind of went into this vacation
11:19
with a different mindset
11:20
and it helped improve the overall, I don't know,
11:24
outcome of the vacation.
11:26
'Cause there were a lot of things that didn't go his way.
11:28
There are a lot of things that he wished would have been different,
11:31
but he just went in with the mindset of me last.
11:34
Me last, me last, serve your wife, serve the kids, me last.
11:38
And it worked out really, really well for them.
11:40
And so I suck at this.
11:42
I super duper suck at this.
11:45
And it's because I'm naturally selfish,
11:47
especially when it comes to things with my family
11:49
and things that I want to do and places that I want to go.
11:51
But when it comes to your family, think of yourself last
11:54
because if you go into a situation with that mindset,
11:57
whether it's before a vacation or a family outing
11:59
or just some sort of decision that you need to make,
12:01
maybe you got young kids, maybe you have older kids, whatever.
12:04
If you think of yourself last,
12:06
you're practicing servanthood.
12:08
You're practicing shepherding in a way as well.
12:13
Because again, when you're shepherding animals,
12:15
you can't think about yourself.
12:15
You have to think about the animals.
12:17
And no, I'm not calling your wife and kids an animal.
12:19
But to a degree, you have the role of headship
12:21
over your household.
12:23
And so if you're constantly worried about what you need
12:26
and what your desires are and whether your needs
12:28
are being met and all that,
12:29
it's gonna become a major problem for you.
12:31
So number two, way again, in no particular order
12:33
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024
12:35
when it comes to your family, think of yourself last.
12:38
All right, now let's get to number three.
12:41
Give the person in front of you your full attention.
12:45
Now, that's the same as something from 2024,
12:48
but I'm gonna give you an addition to this one from last year.
12:51
So give the person in front of you your full attention
12:54
and get rid of your God forsaken smartwatch.
12:58
I swear to absolute everything holy in this world,
13:03
I cannot stand smartwatches as I'm sitting here
13:07
with a Garmin smartwatch on my wrist.
13:10
But this smartwatch has no notifications.
13:14
I've turned all the notifications off.
13:16
So I don't get a notification when I'm getting a phone call,
13:19
when I'm getting a text message,
13:21
when I've reached whatever goal there is for that day,
13:23
I'm not getting a notification at all from my wrist
13:27
'cause I'm already getting enough from this thing.
13:29
From this supercomputer, I put my pocket,
13:31
which is like a vestigial organ that's attached to my hand
13:34
at almost all times of the day.
13:36
But the number of times that I've been in a meeting
13:37
with somebody or having a conversation with somebody
13:41
or watching somebody in a meeting in a conversation
13:44
on a date at a restaurant or something like that,
13:46
and they're listening to the person,
13:47
they're pecking corn, they're pretending like they're listening
13:49
and then they just look down at the wrist
13:52
and then they keep listening, well, guess what?
13:54
You've broken your attention with that person.
13:58
And so we would consider it rude
14:00
if we were sitting at a restaurant,
14:01
let's just say a meeting.
14:02
So you're meeting with somebody over coffee.
14:04
And if you get a text message
14:06
and you just pick up your phone and look at it
14:08
while they're talking, mind you,
14:10
imagine how rude that would be.
14:12
Now, it's already bad enough that people leave their phones
14:15
on them or face up.
14:17
And so every time they get a message,
14:18
they look down at their phone.
14:20
Again, while the other person is talking,
14:22
but what you're communicating to that person
14:24
is that what they're saying is not important.
14:27
Now, you may not actually think that,
14:29
but when you divert your attention away to something else,
14:32
you're communicating to them.
14:33
Whatever you're saying right now is not as important
14:35
as whatever just popped up on my phone,
14:37
whatever type of notification that it is.
14:39
And so if you have a smartwatch,
14:41
I'm not anti-smartwatch in general,
14:43
because maybe you're wearing it
14:44
so you can track your heart rate
14:45
or maybe you're wearing it
14:47
because it helps you with your business in some way.
14:49
I know for my wife shooting weddings for a lot of years,
14:52
if you take your phone out constantly
14:54
to look at the schedule for the day,
14:55
it looks like you're not paying attention to your job,
14:57
but if it's on your wrist,
14:58
people don't really pay attention to it.
15:00
But again, just think about it this way.
15:02
Let's say you were sitting in front of somebody
15:03
that's just wearing a regular old watch,
15:05
not a smartwatch, but a Casio or a G-Shock
15:07
or something like that.
15:09
And if you're talking,
15:10
if they're constantly looking at their wrist,
15:12
it's communicating that you're bored.
15:14
You're checking the time.
15:16
Gosh, is this story over yet?
15:18
Gosh, do I get to leave this conversation or interaction yet?
15:21
That's what you're communicating to somebody.
15:23
But if someone's in front of you,
15:25
if they're giving you the one thing that they can't get back,
15:28
which is their ability to control time,
15:31
which we don't have the ability to control time,
15:34
but if they're giving you their time,
15:36
the least that you can do is give them your attention.
15:40
So the number three way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
15:44
give the person in front of you your full attention
15:47
and get ready your smartwatch.
15:50
Hey guys, real quick.
15:51
I've talked about this on the show before,
15:53
but I've been experimenting with the idea
15:54
of getting on the carnivore diet.
15:56
And so I've got a good buddy, Chad Robichow,
15:57
who's been on the podcast,
15:58
that he's been on the carnivore diet for a while.
16:00
He's seen a lot of great success.
16:02
But the big thing that I've been worrying about
16:04
is like, where do I get high quality beef?
16:05
Like where exactly can I get beef where I can trust
16:08
that's coming from a reputable source,
16:10
that it doesn't have a bunch of junk that's been in it.
16:12
And I've been looking for a cattle operation partner
16:14
to really partner up with.
16:16
And that's why I wanna introduce you
16:18
to the new official beef delivery partner of Undaunted Life.
16:23
And that's my friends at Primal Beef.
16:25
So Primal Beef is a brand new cattle operation
16:28
owned and operated by Sean Glass.
16:30
So he is a retired Navy SEAL that served with Jocko Willing
16:33
and Jocko is also a partner in Primal Beef.
16:35
So what makes Primal Beef different
16:38
from the other fly by night beef delivery companies?
16:40
It's a combination of the following.
16:42
So it's all American black Angus cattle.
16:44
The beef comes from one farm
16:47
and that's in Virginia, Shenandoah Valley.
16:49
Also, the beef is all natural.
16:51
There are no hormones added ever, no antibiotics ever,
16:54
no mRNA ever, and here's a cool thing.
16:57
After slaughter, the beef is dry aged
16:59
and then it's hand cut by artisan butchers
17:02
and then flash frozen to ensure that it maintains
17:04
the tenderness and marbling and flavor
17:06
that you'll want by the time it gets to you.
17:08
And here's another cool thing.
17:09
For every box sold, guys, Primal Beef donates meat directly
17:13
to a member of America's special operations forces
17:16
through the C4 Foundation.
17:18
So you can take pride in knowing that your purchase
17:20
will help literally put food on the table
17:23
for one of America's finest warriors.
17:24
So are you salivating yet?
17:26
'Cause if not, you should be, guys,
17:28
try Primal Beef out today by going to www.primalbeef.com.
17:33
That will be in the show notes.
17:35
That's primalbeef.com.
17:37
Use the promo code Kyle.
17:38
That's my first name, KYLE Kyle for 10% off of your order.
17:43
Again, that is primalbeef.com.
17:45
Use the code Kyle, KYLE to get 10% off of your order.
17:49
All right, guys.
17:50
The number four way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
17:54
make a gratitude list.
17:55
So this is a new one for 2024.
17:57
But the reason why I do this is because my good buddy
18:00
and mentor, Joby Martin, the pastor of Church of 1122
18:02
down in Florida, something that he talks about,
18:05
he's talked about with me personally,
18:06
but from the pulpit multiple times,
18:08
is he has a gratitude list on his phone.
18:10
And so for every year that he's been alive,
18:13
he has one thing that he's grateful for.
18:16
Some of them might be huge things.
18:17
Some of them might be things that might seem
18:20
a little bit vapid, but they're important to him.
18:23
And so this kind of goes back to what I was talking about
18:26
earlier, I always like my preferences
18:27
and for my way and all those types of things.
18:29
So I can come off as ungrateful sometimes.
18:32
And for me also, I move on from the positive things
18:35
really quickly, but I kind of stick on the negative things.
18:38
That's why I don't read my comments.
18:40
That's why I don't read my reviews.
18:41
I want you guys to give me reviews,
18:43
but I could get 105 star reviews in a row
18:46
and people like pour their heart out in the comments
18:48
and oh, this is so great.
18:49
And I just love this stuff.
18:50
And it's made me so much better and blah, blah, blah.
18:51
But that one person is like, yeah, I just don't really get it.
18:53
I don't like the metal music.
18:54
It's scary, it's satanic.
18:56
Why does he scream so much?
18:58
Oh, I don't like his opinion on this one issue
19:00
that he brought up on 500 plus episodes.
19:02
So I'm gonna give him a two star review.
19:04
I will focus on those little crappy nothing comments
19:08
from trolls.
19:09
And so that's why I just don't go there.
19:11
But one thing that's kind of helped kind of recharge me
19:14
and I'm actually gonna bring up my gratitude list here
19:16
in just a second so I can read it to you
19:18
is having this list puts me in the mindset of,
19:21
I wanna make sure to complete the list.
19:23
And so I have 37 things on my list,
19:25
but I'm gonna be turning 38 this year, right?
19:27
So I need to be thinking, what's that thing
19:29
that I need to add to this list?
19:31
And this is kind of like our book list.
19:32
I'm gonna keep adding stuff to the list
19:34
and taking things away just as I'm grateful for these things.
19:37
But it's a good reminder just to kind of go through this,
19:39
you know, if you're injured or if you're having problems
19:42
at home or if you have problems at work
19:43
or if you're not really performing in the way
19:45
that you wanna perform in all areas of life,
19:47
going back to a gratitude list is a great thing.
19:49
So I'm gonna actually read mine real quick
19:51
and then we'll move on to the next thing here.
19:53
But here are the 37 things one for every year
19:56
I've been alive that I am grateful for.
19:58
My salvation, Kelsey, my wife, James, my first son,
20:02
Eli, my second son, my father, the Bible
20:05
and then how it got to us in modernity,
20:07
the United States of America,
20:09
the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights,
20:11
Joby, Martin's mentorship and friendship,
20:14
Faith Bible Church, which is my church here
20:15
in Edmond, Oklahoma, my boy's going to their school
20:18
that they are in right now, Roman, my dog,
20:20
my best friend in the whole world, my foxhole,
20:23
Bertilian Jiu Jitsu and my gym,
20:25
the forge here in Edmond, my truck,
20:27
all the international travel I've done, my home gym,
20:31
hunting on my buddy, Adam's land, hunting on my buddy,
20:33
Heath's land, my podcast audience,
20:36
undaunted life overall, the undaunted life donors,
20:39
the forging table, my book collection,
20:42
my physical health and athleticism at my age.
20:45
You have see fight nights, good whiskey, good cigars,
20:49
whiskey and cigar nights.
20:51
Yes, all those things are different
20:52
and preferably whiskey and cigar nights on my porch.
20:55
The podcast that I listen to, my flexible work schedule,
20:59
my partnership with Origin and Jocko Fuel,
21:02
just meat, yeah, just meat, just meat in general,
21:04
I'm very, very thankful for that.
21:06
Taste buds, my favorite music, mountains
21:10
and my voice recovery up to this point.
21:12
So again, some of those here are going to be like,
21:13
well, those are kind of lame.
21:15
Well, it's not your freaking list.
21:16
Make your own list and the great thing about a dude,
21:19
the great thing about it guys that I would love for you to do
21:22
is do it on your phone, okay?
21:24
So I can check this out at any time.
21:26
Maybe you're a journal person and you like to write things
21:28
down, but I'm assuming your journal's not on you
21:30
at all times in your cargo pocket.
21:32
So if you have it on your phone and you think of something,
21:34
maybe you have 15 things on your list
21:36
and you're 45 years old and you got a few to go.
21:38
As you think about it, just add it to the list.
21:41
Don't really like kind of, oh, you know,
21:42
vastly back and forth and I don't really know
21:44
and it's just a big enough deal.
21:45
Just put it on the list.
21:47
You can always edit the list later,
21:48
but I really, really enjoy having this
21:50
and it's a great habit that I've created.
21:52
So I'm very thankful to Pastor Joby Martin
21:54
for helping me think through that
21:56
and to go ahead and do that,
21:58
it's just something that all guys have to do.
21:59
So the number four way to avoid being a crappy man
22:01
in 2024, make a gratitude list.
22:04
Again, one for every year that you've been alive.
22:06
All right, the number five way to avoid being a crappy man
22:09
in 2024, don't let sports ruin your night.
22:11
This one is going to be on every single one
22:16
of these episodes until the show is no moss.
22:19
Do not let sports ruin your night.
22:21
Now, I know a lot of you guys in this audience,
22:22
you're sports fans.
22:24
You're just like me.
22:25
You've got your favorite teams,
22:26
you've got your favorite fighters,
22:27
you've got your favorite leagues.
22:29
And if you're anything like me,
22:31
you've allowed your fandom to dictate how you act,
22:35
how you are around your family,
22:38
how you are around your friends.
22:40
Some of you have lost friendships
22:42
because of the way that you've acted
22:44
because of an outcome to a sports game.
22:46
Some of you have potentially been kicked out of your homes
22:51
or been told by people,
22:52
"Look, I can't watch these games with you
22:55
"when this team is playing because you're a lunatic."
22:58
Perhaps some of you have gotten in fights
23:00
because of the outcomes of games that you've watched.
23:03
Perhaps some of you have broken things,
23:05
punched walls or done any of those types of things
23:08
because of the outcome of a game that you are not playing in.
23:12
Now, most of the things I just mentioned, guys, I've done.
23:17
So without going into all the background,
23:20
huge St. Louis Cardinals fan,
23:22
been a Cardinals fan my entire life.
23:24
Back in 2012, I actually worked for Major League Baseball
23:27
where I was representing the St. Louis Cardinals
23:29
as their super mega fan watched every single game
23:32
and I lived and died with every pitch.
23:36
Now baseball fans know this,
23:37
there's 162 games in the regular season
23:40
and then there's playoffs.
23:41
It's a lot of pitches.
23:43
It's a lot of hits, it's a lot of strikeouts,
23:47
it's a lot of home runs, it's a lot of double plays,
23:49
it's a lot of disappointing endings and a lot of walk-offs.
23:54
And I would let, like literally,
23:57
the Cardinals would lose a game in June,
24:00
right in the middle of the summer
24:02
and I would let it affect me until the next day's game.
24:06
I would go to bed [inaudible] off, I would wake up [inaudible] off,
24:09
I wouldn't talk to my wife,
24:11
I would be short with people at work
24:13
because the Cardinals lost a game
24:15
on a Tuesday in the middle of the summer.
24:17
And I look back on that time period, guys,
24:19
and I'm so embarrassed.
24:22
I remember going to a World Series game for the Cardinals,
24:25
they lost in the ninth inning,
24:27
the closer it gave up, it was Jason Mott,
24:29
he gave up some hits, gave up some runs,
24:31
Cardinals ended up losing that game.
24:32
I think it was game two of the 2013 World Series.
24:37
There was a friend in Missouri, close to St. Louis,
24:41
that was allowing me and my wife to stay at their home
24:44
so that we could not have to drive back in the middle of the night,
24:47
like, yeah, just come on over and stay there.
24:49
And by the time I got to their house after the game,
24:51
I still couldn't speak because I was so mad
24:54
that the St. Louis Cardinals didn't win a baseball game.
24:58
So I treated this family so rudely
25:01
and they had little kids and everything
25:02
because I just couldn't speak why because I was mad.
25:05
I was mad that my team didn't win the game.
25:08
What an embarrassing fool I was.
25:10
And so that changed, I don't know what exactly changed,
25:14
but in my early 30s, I was like, enough of this.
25:17
And at the time I was still watching the NBA,
25:19
I was a big Thunder fan and, you know, I would react the same way
25:21
to Thunder Losses as I would in St. Louis Cardinals.
25:24
So this is what I do now.
25:26
If I really care about the outcome of a game,
25:28
I probably won't even watch it.
25:31
Which to you, if you're a big fan of a particular college football team
25:35
or a big fan of a particular NHL team or something,
25:37
you'd be like, wait a minute, what?
25:39
You're not going to watch the OU Sooners Bowl game.
25:42
I'm not an OU fan, but you might, I know a lot of OU fans listen to this.
25:45
But you're not going to watch the game.
25:47
Wait, you're not going to watch this college football playoff game?
25:49
Wait, you're not going to watch this second round Stanley Cup playoff game?
25:54
Well, no, I'm not.
25:56
Because when I start to feel that angry ginger energy
26:00
coming up through my stomach and working its way into my chest,
26:04
I'm like, oop, turn it off.
26:07
I'll wake up the next morning, I'll check my phone.
26:09
Oh, they lost her. Oh, they won.
26:11
And then I move on.
26:15
And the reason why I want to do that is because I don't want my sons
26:18
to see me overreacting to something that I have no input on.
26:23
Yeah, maybe you're a huge fan, man.
26:24
You just love your Kansas City Chiefs.
26:26
Gosh, you just love your Sacramento Kings.
26:28
You just and you just love this particular fighter.
26:30
I get it.
26:31
It can be fun.
26:32
But if it starts affecting your mood in a deleterious way
26:36
and starts affecting your relationship with your wife,
26:38
if your kids are mimicking your ridiculous response to a first down
26:43
or a sack or a home run or a goal, dude, cut it off.
26:49
I think about it this way.
26:51
I cut off watching St. Louis Cardinals like playoff games,
26:55
important games.
26:56
I cut off watching like fighters that I really
26:58
wanted to win or something like that, which I don't really
26:59
have that problem anymore.
27:01
And you know how much worse my life has gotten?
27:04
Not at all.
27:05
Hasn't got worse at all.
27:08
Like, not even a little bit.
27:10
And you might be like, oh, but you're missing out
27:12
on all these these great events.
27:13
And what about that walk off home run
27:15
that you mentioned and blah, blah, and all that?
27:16
But that is of no value to me when
27:19
compared to being a good example for my children
27:22
and being a good supporter of my wife.
27:24
I remember my wife when I was in my 20s,
27:26
this before we had kids, she was like,
27:28
I can't like at different points when I was freaking out
27:30
about the Cardinals and all they lost.
27:32
And I'm so mad.
27:32
I got to go for a run right now in the middle of the night
27:34
because I'm so mad.
27:35
And her saying to me, you were, you were a fool.
27:39
And I can't imagine having kids with someone like you.
27:42
Now that may seem like a pretty rough quote,
27:44
but there's a reason why I remember it right now
27:46
as I'm recording because she was right.
27:50
How can you have kids with a kid, right?
27:53
Someone that's acting like a fully grown up child.
27:56
And again, I'm not telling you guys don't be a sports fan.
27:58
I'm not telling you that you can't watch sports.
28:01
Obviously, I would never tell you to do that.
28:03
But again, if you're letting the athletic performance
28:07
of, in some cases, teenagers dictate
28:09
whether or not you're going to be a good person,
28:12
whether or not you're going to comport yourself in a way
28:13
that Christ would want you to comport yourself,
28:16
then you need to stop it.
28:17
Find a way to not do it anymore.
28:19
So number five way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
28:22
Don't let sports ruin your night.
28:24
All right, the number six way
28:26
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
28:28
Do incredibly difficult physical things
28:31
that constantly check your ego and your limits.
28:35
That's a new one for 2024, I'll repeat it.
28:38
Do incredibly difficult physical things
28:40
that constantly check your ego and your limits.
28:44
So this is a derivative, I think of what I said last year,
28:46
which is make sure that you redline at least once a week.
28:48
So redlining for people is different.
28:50
So maybe redlining for you is you got to the end
28:53
of that set where you would normally stop
28:55
at five reps and you did two extra reps.
28:58
Or maybe you're on the air-dined bike
28:59
and you're doing that 30-cal sprint
29:01
at the end of a 25-minute Tabata workout.
29:05
Maybe it's that extra jiu-jitsu round
29:07
that you would normally skip because you're gassed out,
29:09
but you get to that point where you feel like
29:11
you're absolutely redlined and you can't do anymore.
29:14
But the reason why I changed it to
29:16
do incredibly difficult physical things
29:17
that constantly check your ego and your limits
29:20
is because there are people that will redline
29:23
at the stuff they're good at.
29:25
So for my triathletes out there,
29:27
you'll redline running, swimming, or biking.
29:29
You're fine to redline doing that,
29:32
but you will keep yourself
29:34
from redlining doing something like grappling, jiu-jitsu,
29:37
because you can't control that.
29:39
Maybe you're amazing at powerlifting, right?
29:43
So you're deadlifting over 700 pounds,
29:45
you're benching over 400,
29:47
you're squatting over 500 and you're that guy.
29:49
And so you're fine to redline doing that type of stuff.
29:52
You can't remember the last time you did cardio though.
29:55
You've never ran a sprint, right?
29:58
Because that's more difficult
30:00
'cause you're not very fast.
30:01
And so you're gonna focus on the things
30:02
that you're good at because of your ego.
30:05
Because you have limitations
30:08
and you're letting your ego dictate
30:10
whether or not you're gonna get past those limitations.
30:14
And so I think of this constantly
30:16
because I'll kind of lull myself to sleep a little bit.
30:18
I'll go two or three months doing the stuff I'm good at
30:21
and then I'll realize, ooh,
30:23
I haven't really redlined on something
30:24
that's checking my ego in a while.
30:26
Or maybe I have a good couple of weeks,
30:29
which is typically as long as it lasts,
30:30
a good couple of weeks
30:31
where I don't have anybody really smoke me in jujitsu.
30:34
Like I'm in control during my roles.
30:36
I'm understanding what's being taught by the professor
30:38
and I'm doing well during drilling
30:39
and those types of things.
30:40
And then it's like, okay,
30:42
I need to go to the class where the sharks are.
30:45
Yeah, I need to roll with Jett Thompson,
30:46
who's a 16 year old killer
30:48
who's gonna be a role champion someday.
30:50
A kid that I've never scored on.
30:52
He's 16 and just got his brown belt.
30:54
I need to go roll with Jett.
30:56
I need to go roll with Livingston.
30:57
I need to go roll with Steve.
30:59
I need to go roll with Aldo.
31:00
I need to go roll with Austin.
31:02
I need to go roll with Jake.
31:04
These guys at my gym,
31:05
that most of those guys I just mentioned,
31:08
I've almost never scored on.
31:10
I can count probably on my two hands,
31:11
the number of points I've scored
31:12
on all those people combined.
31:14
Looks like I need to go roll with those guys.
31:17
'Cause I need to need to go check.
31:19
'Cause I don't want to get to this point where I'm like,
31:20
oh, I'm this fully put together thing
31:22
as it comes to jujitsu.
31:23
But then as most people know,
31:25
you can be in jujitsu shape,
31:26
but not being running shape.
31:28
You can be in running shape and not being swimming shape.
31:30
You can be in swimming shape
31:31
but not being grappling shape,
31:32
whatever this situation is.
31:34
So you need to identify those things in your life
31:36
that you've been avoiding
31:36
'cause you know what they are.
31:38
Of all those things that I've mentioned,
31:39
you know which one you've been avoiding.
31:40
That is available to you.
31:42
Not everybody has a pool that they can swim in
31:43
or something like that.
31:44
But you know the thing that is available to you.
31:47
And you need to go towards those things,
31:49
not run away.
31:50
Because the things that are incredibly difficult
31:53
to do physically are the things that are gonna push you
31:56
to that next level physically.
31:58
A lot of you guys want to be in peak,
31:59
athletic condition and peak shape.
32:01
Well, how do you expect to do that
32:02
if you're constantly ignoring the areas of your life
32:04
that you're weak at?
32:06
But like what exactly are you planning to do?
32:08
But the biggest thing is an ego check.
32:10
'Cause I remember listening to some of those dangerous guys
32:13
that I mentioned earlier in jujitsu.
32:15
And then they'll be like,
32:16
Oh man, I went and ran with my buddy
32:18
who was like a Mylar in high school.
32:20
Guy that runs 5Ks and he's always in like
32:22
the top three finishers or something like that.
32:24
Oh boy, was that an ego check?
32:27
Guys, you need that.
32:28
And maybe you have that guy that's more of like
32:30
the powerlifting guy,
32:31
but then he went and worked out with a guy
32:33
that's more of like a maximum reps type guy.
32:37
Or maybe you're the powerlifting guy
32:39
and you haven't focused on your flexibility.
32:40
You haven't touched your toes since you were two years old.
32:43
And then you go work out with somebody
32:44
that's doing more calisthenic based things.
32:46
Things that require you to be able to stretch and move
32:49
and put your body in awkward positions.
32:51
Look for those opportunities guys.
32:53
If you want to get better in 2024,
32:54
that's a way to do it.
32:55
Number six way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
32:59
Do incredibly difficult physical things
33:01
that constantly check your ego and your limits.
33:04
All right guys, the number seven way
33:05
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
33:08
get involved in a local church.
33:10
Now for some of you might be like,
33:12
I'm just gonna kind of skip one, I get it.
33:13
But let me pause you for a second.
33:15
So we've gotten a lot of new listeners to the show.
33:17
So that came a lot on the heels of the Mike Glover interview
33:20
that I did in late November, early December.
33:23
And the questions I'm getting are the same questions
33:26
over and over.
33:27
Some of those that we're going to address soon.
33:30
Guys, we have something that we're gonna start
33:31
and release here in the first quarter of 2023,
33:34
our first quarter of 2024 rather,
33:36
that it should absolutely change the way that we've entered
33:39
into the fight to push back darkness.
33:40
So I'll give you more announcements on that when we have them,
33:42
but just be patient with us.
33:44
But a lot of guys are like,
33:45
hey, I live in Lexington, Kentucky.
33:47
Is there a church in my area I should go to?
33:50
Hey, I live in Yukon, Oklahoma.
33:51
Is there a church that I should go to?
33:53
Hey, I live in, you know, wherever'sville, Texas.
33:56
Is there a church that I can go to?
33:59
And what I've told guys is like, look,
34:01
you're looking for me to give you the cheat code
34:04
to the church in your area that I think would be good for you.
34:07
I can't even answer that question from my city
34:09
because I go to one church and I attended one other one
34:13
before that and I, you know, visited a few others.
34:16
So I have generalized opinions,
34:17
but those opinions are 10 years old.
34:19
And so someone in my city,
34:21
I can't give them a direct line to here's where you should be
34:24
going and here's the places that you should avoid.
34:26
So why would you think I could do that in your city?
34:29
What you should do is go to a local congregation
34:32
and look for a few things.
34:34
I'll try to remember
34:34
because I've given this advice a lot lately.
34:36
Number one, are the men there?
34:39
Are there manly men present?
34:43
Are they volunteering?
34:46
Are they singing?
34:48
Are they serving?
34:49
Or are they leading their families?
34:51
Or do you see a bunch of women with their kids
34:53
and the fathers know where to be found?
34:55
Or are you in a congregation where it's just a bunch
34:58
of old guys that have just been there their entire lives
35:00
so they're just going to keep going?
35:02
Because if the men aren't there and aren't involved,
35:05
that's probably not a healthy church.
35:07
Number two, is the word being exposited and exegeted?
35:12
So are they going verse by verse through the Bible,
35:15
through certain books of the Bible
35:17
and exegeting the scripture,
35:18
which means basically displaying exactly what the text means?
35:22
Or are they doing a TED talk and isegeting?
35:25
So a TED talk is basically,
35:26
okay, I'm gonna come up with the top four ways
35:28
to be a better servant this year
35:32
and then I'm gonna sprinkle some Bible verses
35:34
over the top of it on the back end, right?
35:37
And isegeting is what I wish the text would say, right?
35:40
I'm gonna make it fit for this point that I'm trying to make
35:43
so I seem cool and get more Instagram followers, right?
35:46
Because if that's what you're getting,
35:48
what I just described, don't go there.
35:50
That's spiritual milk, you need meat, okay?
35:55
So that's another thing to kind of look at
35:57
and some other things to look at is can I serve here?
36:02
Because we all look at this as consumers,
36:05
what can the church do for me?
36:06
Oh, I left that church
36:07
'cause they weren't really serving my needs.
36:09
Well, if you go back to the first century church
36:11
and they actually see a model,
36:12
you know who was asking that question?
36:14
Nobody.
36:15
They were asking how they could serve.
36:17
How their skillset, how their callings,
36:20
how their gifting could serve the local body of believers.
36:23
So if you go to a church that has 20,000 people that attend
36:28
or 200 people that attend or 50 people that attend,
36:32
can you serve there?
36:33
Is there something that that church needs
36:37
that's a gap that you can fill?
36:38
Again, don't go into the church shopping process
36:43
like what church is going to meet my best needs?
36:46
What music is more aligned with my taste?
36:50
What type of preaching, like, you know,
36:52
is the coffee warm when I get there?
36:54
Do they have snacks?
36:55
Don't go into it that way 'cause that's selfish.
36:58
Go into it thinking, can I serve here?
37:00
So guys, the number seven way
37:01
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
37:03
get involved in a local church.
37:05
All right guys, the number eight way
37:07
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
37:09
study the Bible with other men.
37:11
So this is one that was just like last year,
37:13
I said this last year on 2023,
37:15
obviously that spring boarded us into the release
37:17
of the forging table, which those of you
37:19
that are not aware, the forging tables where once a week,
37:22
I record, I sit down and recorded with three other laymen,
37:25
so non-passors, non-professional Christians,
37:27
and we just go an hour at a time,
37:29
a chapter at a time through books of the Bible.
37:32
And the thing is, is I've gotten a tremendous amount of value
37:35
out of that, just preparing to do that.
37:38
But also the guys that are part of the forging table
37:40
for the rotation of guys that we have,
37:42
they've gotten a tremendous amount of value as well,
37:44
'cause they're learning on their own,
37:46
the Holy Spirit is revealing things to them,
37:48
but they're also learning things with other guys.
37:50
And so this is a tremendously big asset.
37:53
And what we try to do with Undaunted Life
37:54
is make it easier for you to do that.
37:57
So with Crossway, we have that thing that I talk about
38:00
in basically every episode of the forging table,
38:02
there's this forging table starter set, so it's five books
38:05
that kind of help you dig into the Bible,
38:06
so there's a men's study Bible, there's a journal,
38:08
there's a few other books there,
38:10
that can kind of help you,
38:11
but this is where I wanna announce a new partnership,
38:13
and that's with Logos Bible Software.
38:15
And so I'll just flow in this very shortly.
38:18
There's not a more powerful Bible software on the planet
38:21
than Logos.
38:23
And so there's a link that will be here in the show notes,
38:25
it's just Logos.com/Undaunted Life,
38:28
that's L-O-G-O-S.com/Undaunted Life.
38:32
If you use that link,
38:33
you're gonna get five free digital books
38:35
with your Logos subscription.
38:36
There's different subscription tiers and all that,
38:38
I'll let you figure that out on your own.
38:39
I'm not gonna belittle your intelligence, you can read.
38:43
But basically, this is a software
38:45
that you can dig as far into the scriptures you wanna go.
38:48
So if you wanna be a full-on theologian,
38:51
academician, and really dig into the Greek and the Hebrew,
38:54
and how it relates to this and that,
38:55
and whatever, and verb tenses and everything, you can do that.
38:59
Or if you just wanna know, man,
39:01
I can't remember who wrote the Colossians,
39:03
I need to figure that out.
39:05
Every single thing that you could possibly ever want,
39:08
just about every question that you've ever had
39:10
about the Bible, a particular chapter,
39:12
a particular verse, a particular word,
39:14
can be discovered within that Bible software.
39:17
Now, I'm a novice user of that
39:19
because I just started using it.
39:20
But they reached out to us, we're like,
39:22
hey, looks like you're trying to level guys up
39:23
with the scripture, and I met with them,
39:25
and we kinda figured out, okay,
39:26
here are some things that you can do
39:28
with that particular software.
39:29
So if you're creating your own group of men
39:33
to study the Bible with together, gosh, this is an asset.
39:37
Especially if you're leading the group.
39:39
Because if you're leading the group,
39:40
that doesn't mean you need to kinda be this guy
39:43
that can answer every single question.
39:45
But I've yet to find a pathway in Logos
39:49
that didn't lead to me getting my question answered.
39:52
And within the Logos software, you have a commentary.
39:54
So maybe you're a John MacArthur guy,
39:56
well, all of his commentaries are there.
39:58
Maybe you have this particular translation in the Bible.
40:00
If you wanna see what Spurgeon said
40:01
about this particular passage,
40:03
all that stuff is in there.
40:05
You've got genealogies, you've got maps,
40:07
you've got word studies,
40:10
you've got different translations, different languages.
40:12
It's all in there.
40:13
So guys, at least check it out.
40:15
If you sign up and feel like it's for you, great.
40:17
Two thumbs up.
40:18
But that is gonna be in the show notes again.
40:20
The link is logos.com/endauntedlife
40:23
but guys, the number eight way
40:25
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
40:27
study the Bible with other men.
40:29
- When you need to build up your team
40:31
to handle the growing chaos at work,
40:33

40:35

40:38
and helps reach people with the right skills,
40:40
certifications and more.

40:43
and more time actually interviewing candidates
40:45
who check all your boxes.
40:47
Listeners of this show will get a $75 sponsor job credit
40:50
at indeed.com/podcast.
40:52
That's indeed.com/podcast terms and conditions apply.
40:55
Need a hiring hero?
40:56
This is a job for indeed sponsor jobs.
40:59
- All right, the number nine way to avoid being a crappy man
41:02
in 2024, and gosh, I've been waiting for this one.
41:04
I've kind of teed it up and talked about it a little bit,
41:06
but here it is.
41:07
Stop giving money to people that hate you and your values.
41:12
So this is a new one for this year,
41:15
but stop giving money to people that hate you and your values.
41:19
Here's the thing that I don't understand about conservatives.
41:22
Conservatives love to point at things
41:24
inside the culture war.
41:25
They like to share memes.
41:27
They like to share outrageous stories.
41:30
There's a few people in the conservative space
41:32
that their only thing that they contribute
41:34
to the conservative space is I'm angry about this
41:37
and you should be angry too.
41:38
Can you believe that this is happening?
41:40
Oh gosh, we should do something about this.
41:42
They're very good on describing something,
41:45
but they're not good at prescribing anything.
41:48
They're very good at opposing something,
41:51
but they don't propose anything.
41:53
But I want to give some specific examples.
41:56
Bud Light, Disney, Nike, Target, Starbucks,
42:01
like there's all these different brands.
42:05
So let's go with them in order.
42:07
So Bud Light already talked about
42:09
on the year and wrap up episode.
42:11
Conservatives won, they almost destroyed that brand
42:13
and now they're coming back to Bud Light.
42:15
Oh, Bud Lights haven't had enough.
42:17
Bud Light didn't apologize.
42:18
And Heiser Bush didn't say,
42:19
"Yeah, we should have never gone against our target audience
42:24
"by getting into bed literally
42:26
"with Dylan Mulvaney or in the tub, I guess you could say."
42:29
And then we're just like, "Yeah."
42:30
But I kind of like Bud Light, it's convenient.
42:31
It's at 7/11, so I'll just buy it.
42:34
Disney is one of the most egregious ones
42:37
because Disney has signaled that they are actively
42:40
putting LGBTQ+ content into kids' content
42:45
and they're targeting your children,
42:47
they're grooming them to get them more used
42:49
to LGBTQ lifestyles.
42:52
And you weirdos are going to Disneyland
42:57
and going to Disney World
42:58
and you have Disney+ subscriptions.
43:00
What are you doing?
43:03
I don't understand it.
43:05
There are men with beards wearing dresses
43:08
and you are paying, I don't know, 500 bucks
43:10
for the opportunity to have your daughter
43:13
go into this princess factory and interact with a dude.
43:18
And auto gotta feel it, dude.
43:20
That is turned on sexually by the sight of himself
43:23
dressed up in women's clothing.
43:25
And you see no issue with it.
43:28
You're dropping 5'10 grand on a Disney trip.
43:30
I don't get it.
43:32
Target is selling LGBTQ+ content and satanic stuff
43:38
made by satanic people in their kids' section.
43:42
Ah, but you really like some of their brands
43:44
and their clothes are cooler than Walmart's
43:46
so you keep shopping at Target.
43:48
Starbucks gives an unbelievable amount of money
43:50
to a bunch of left-wing causes including Planned Parenthood.
43:53
So when you buy that latte,
43:56
you, a portion of that is going to kill babies.
43:59
And you keep going because it's convenient.
44:02
So my way to work.
44:03
Ah, this isn't really the hill to die on.
44:06
So if that's where you're at, I have to ask you,
44:09
what hill is worth dying on?
44:10
What line are you going to draw?
44:14
Netflix is another one.
44:14
I've talked about this before.
44:16
So they've got the Coco Mellon offshoot show
44:18
where you have the two gay fathers
44:20
that are sitting there singing and dancing
44:22
with their, you know, child, their son
44:24
who's dressed up like a girl.
44:26
And they're talking about how this is a great thing.
44:29
How about the cuties movie
44:31
where it's a bunch of pre-teen girls
44:34
that are dancing and suggestive and sexual ways
44:36
for the pleasure of pedophilic men.
44:38
You still give your money to Netflix.
44:42
Why?
44:43
Well, 'cause they have shows that I like to watch.
44:46
Again, for some of you,
44:47
this isn't the ultimate hill to die on,
44:49
but this is very serious and important.
44:51
The only way that you can send messages
44:53
to these big brands that says stop doing these things
44:58
that are counter to what I want my values
45:01
and my family to be,
45:02
the only way to communicate to that to them
45:04
is to stop giving them your money.
45:06
Because I don't believe you when you say
45:09
that you're outraged about something that these brands do
45:12
and then you hand them your money.
45:15
It's the easiest thing to turn off.
45:17
We can't pretend like there aren't other brands out there.
45:20
So if you like Bud Light, switch to Miller Light.
45:23
If you like Disney, switch to Ben Key,
45:25
the Daily Wire Kids app.
45:27
If you like Nike, switch to Under Armour.
45:29
If you like Target, switch to Walmart
45:30
or basically any other store in your area.
45:33
If you like Starbucks, go to Black Rifle Coffee.
45:36
And now here's the deal.
45:37
If you start looking at all the brands
45:39
that you spend money on in a month
45:41
and you're trying to piece together,
45:42
what does the board of directors think
45:44
and where do they give their money and all that?
45:46
You will run yourself into the ground.
45:48
So I'm not suggesting that you do that.
45:50
'Cause you might get to the point where you're like,
45:51
I can't support any brand
45:53
and you might end up in that place.
45:56
But these huge brands that are targeting you
45:59
and your children, that are trying to destroy morality
46:03
in and of itself, that are doing things
46:05
that lead to the death of children.
46:08
'Cause of the money they give to Planned Parenthood
46:10
and other organizations like it.
46:12
Well, those are the ones that are screaming in your face.
46:14
This isn't some random pin company
46:17
that you're finding out that, what does this pin?
46:19
This pin tell.
46:20
I don't know if pin tell supports any of these things.
46:22
I should probably check it out
46:23
'cause I use these pins all day every day.
46:25
But I know for sure that Netflix and Disney and Bud Light
46:28
and Nike and Target and Starbucks and all these companies,
46:30
I know what they're about.
46:32
So how easy is it for me to turn off that spigot?
46:34
It's pretty easy.
46:36
So again, it's all you people out there
46:37
that are just like brain dead going through your world.
46:41
Really think about that.
46:42
And also, if you normally shop at Target
46:45
and you stop doing that and your kids are like,
46:46
"Hey, why aren't we going to Target?"
46:48
Doesn't that set you up for a great conversation
46:50
about morality and what your family's gonna stand up for?
46:53
'Cause if my kid says, "Dad, I wanna go to Disney World.
46:55
"Why can't we go to Disney World?
46:57
"I'm gonna have a conversation and explain to 'em."
46:58
Look, son, Thompson's don't support companies
47:00
that are for these things.
47:02
That's a great teaching lesson.
47:05
And if your spouse doesn't really understand
47:08
why you're so adamant about these things,
47:10
that's a great time to lead your spouse.
47:13
And say, "Look, honey, I know you've gone to Starbucks
47:15
"for a long time and I know that's where you like to do
47:17
"a lot of your meetings and Bob on all these types of things."
47:19
But there are 47 other coffee shops in this city
47:22
and I think we should support those.
47:24
And this is why Starbucks gives X amount of dollars
47:26
to Planned Parenthood every year
47:28
and I don't really like the fact that they murder babies.
47:30
That's like their main thing
47:31
that they bring to the marketplace.
47:33
So guys, this is probably the one that I'm most adamant about
47:36
for this year, but you've really got to get after it
47:39
on this one.
47:39
The number nine way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
47:43
stop giving money to people that hate you and your values.
47:46
All right, guys, number 10.
47:48
And this is one that I put out every single year.
47:50
The number 10 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
47:54
No porn, no jerking off.
47:56
Yep, for some of you, that's a shock.
47:58
For those of you that have been with the show
47:59
for a long time, that's not gonna be a shock to you.
48:01
The thing that I realize about my audience
48:03
that it's 90% male or so
48:06
is that a lot of you struggle with pornography.
48:08
Some of you don't think it's that big a deal.
48:11
I would say that's the minority of you guys,
48:13
but a lot of you guys know you shouldn't be doing it.
48:15
And the reason why I know that you know
48:17
that you shouldn't be doing it
48:18
is 'cause you don't do it in public.
48:20
You're not sitting there in a business meeting
48:21
unless you're, you know, tubing from CNN.
48:23
You're not in a business meeting,
48:25
pulling out, you know, porn on your phone
48:27
and masturbating to it.
48:29
This is a private thing for basically all of you
48:31
that aren't, you know, public voyeurs.
48:33
And so you're watching porn.
48:37
You're getting your sexual scripts from porn.
48:40
You're trying to carry some of the things
48:41
that you've seen in porn into the bedroom
48:43
with your spouse or with your girlfriend
48:45
or with any of those types of people.
48:48
And you're thinking to yourself,
48:49
ah, this isn't having any effects.
48:51
I can tell you, without a doubt,
48:53
there's a book that's on our book list,
48:54
How Pronography Harms, written by John Fobert,
48:57
that's a book that tells you what you're doing to your brain.
49:00
Is it any shock to you that you don't get off
49:03
on in the same way to those pictures
49:05
that you did when you were a teenager?
49:07
Maybe you grew up looking at playboys
49:09
or, you know, pictures on the internet
49:10
or something like that.
49:11
But now you're watching hardcore porn.
49:14
You're watching women getting an early raped
49:16
and you're masturbating to that.
49:18
Some of you have gone all the way to like
49:21
snuff porn or murder porn.
49:23
Yes, there is porn out there.
49:24
I have not seen it, but I know people that have
49:27
where you're watching somebody that is
49:28
in the process of being raped
49:30
and then they're murdered while being raped.
49:34
And you're watching that with an erection
49:37
and you're masturbating.
49:38
Help me understand how this is a valuable thing for you to do.
49:42
'Cause this is the thing that I know.
49:44
To those of you that are not married yet,
49:46
I've heard this over and over and it never works out.
49:48
They think, oh, when I get married,
49:50
I'll be having so much sex.
49:51
Some of you are already laughing.
49:53
But when I get married, I'll be having so much sex.
49:55
I won't even need porn.
49:56
I'll just have my wife.
49:57
Let me just break the news to you guys.
50:00
You're not gonna end up having a whole lot of sex
50:02
with your wife all the time.
50:03
This is not gonna happen.
50:05
There's a lot of things that are involved in that,
50:07
but you're not going to be having sex
50:09
as often as you were jerking off.
50:11
'Cause most of you guys were doing that every single day,
50:13
sometimes multiple times a day.
50:15
Now, if you're blessed to have a wife like that, good for you,
50:17
but for the most part,
50:18
you're not gonna have somebody espouse that's like that.
50:21
I know people that have been caught looking at porn
50:23
and jerking off when they're wedding night.
50:25
I know people that are so tied into pornography
50:28
that they can't even get an erection unless they're watching it.
50:31
I've heard about these incredibly depraved situations
50:34
where wives, trying to serve their husband,
50:39
are holding the phone above their head with porn on it
50:43
so that their husband can maintain an erection
50:46
while they're having sex.
50:47
Because they've rewired the pleasure centers of their brain
50:52
to where they can't get an erection or keep an erection
50:55
with an actual, real, warm-bodied woman.
50:58
They need it the digital way.
51:01
They don't think that's an issue.
51:03
And so if you're looking for a big blinking neon sign
51:05
that says, "This is a year that we're gonna get this
51:07
"under control, this is it."
51:09
And here's the other thing I'll tell you,
51:10
'cause I've had people ask me before, they're like,
51:12
"Kah, I've got a pornography problem.
51:14
"How can I stop doing it?"
51:15
And I'm like, "Well, stop doing it."
51:18
And they're like, "What do you mean?"
51:23
I'm like, "Well, you wanna stop doing a particular thing.
51:26
"Stop doing it."
51:27
Because I don't believe that most people
51:29
that say they're addicted to pornography,
51:31
I don't think that that's actually real.
51:33
'Cause if you're addicted,
51:34
you're literally compelled in a way that you cannot stop.
51:38
So you have, you have no power.
51:41
Like your body is just operating, right?
51:43
You're picking up your phone,
51:44
you're going to whatever site that you go to,
51:46
you're clicking on links,
51:47
and you're going to the next one,
51:48
the next one, the next one,
51:49
and the next one until you find the one
51:50
that you actually wanna climax to,
51:52
and then you do it, you set your phone down,
51:53
and you clean up, and you move on with your day.
51:55
And you just rinse and repeat that, no pun intended.
51:57
Multiple times a day, multiple times a week
51:59
for how often you do that.
52:00
Are you compelled to do those things,
52:03
or do you choose to do them?
52:05
Because my argument would be,
52:06
is I think that you are choosing to pick up your phone,
52:10
choosing to take your finger,
52:12
choosing to click on certain links,
52:14
choosing to plug in search terms,
52:17
choosing to scroll,
52:18
choosing to click on images or videos,
52:20
and choosing to continue doing that
52:23
while you've got your pants around your ankles.
52:25
I think all those things are choices.
52:27
And so, if you're choosing to do those things,
52:30
is it not possible or logical to assume
52:33
that you could choose to not do those things?
52:35
Pretty sure you can choose to not do them,
52:38
and here's the other thing.
52:40
If you stop looking at,
52:42
or here, I'll put it this way.
52:43
If you stop looking at porn,
52:45
you have no need to jerk off to porn.
52:47
This might seem like a little crass for some people,
52:51
but I'm assuming there's not anyone out there
52:53
that watches porn for the acting quality that's happening.
52:57
For the cinematography, for the editing, for the music.
53:01
People are watching pornography
53:04
so that they have a masturbatory aid.
53:07
They're watching porn to get an erection
53:09
so that they can masturbate and then climax.
53:12
That's why they're doing it.
53:14
So if you're not watching porn,
53:16
you're not gonna be jerking off to porn, right?
53:20
People try to over-complicate this,
53:22
and I know there's different programs,
53:24
and different books that people say,
53:25
"Oh, this is how we get past it."
53:26
You know how you get past it, you just stop doing it.
53:28
Now, it's different for chemical addictions,
53:30
like alcohol for some people.
53:33
There's just a propensity.
53:34
There is a portion of the population
53:36
that has tremendous amounts of difficulty,
53:39
not going back to nicotine,
53:40
not going back to alcohol,
53:42
not going back to heroin or something like that.
53:44
That's not this.
53:45
This is just behavioral modification.
53:47
Just stop doing it.
53:48
You know, I remember back in the day,
53:51
someone asked Jocko Willink,
53:52
"How can I get better at doing pull-ups?"
53:53
His response is, "Do pull-ups."
53:55
Right, you're not gonna get better at doing pull-ups
53:57
by reading books about pull-ups,
53:59
by going to support groups that talk about doing pull-ups,
54:02
by going to a pull-up coach in learning form,
54:05
eventually you have to grab the bar,
54:06
hang from it, and then try to pull your chin above it,
54:09
and do the things it takes
54:10
to make sure that you can do that more often
54:13
and better and more efficiently.
54:15
And one more quick thing before we leave this,
54:18
the thing that you all need to realize
54:20
is a lot of the people that you are watching
54:23
and getting off to and masturbating thinking about,
54:26
a lot of these people,
54:28
especially the women, are being trafficked.
54:30
So go back to last year, early last year,
54:32
at an interview with Brittany Della Moore,
54:33
she was a porn star for six or seven years,
54:35
and then she got out of that life,
54:37
became a Christian now, she's a Christian speaker,
54:39
same thing with Joshua Broome with last year.
54:41
But a lot of these women, just off camera,
54:43
when they're faking, like they're enjoying,
54:45
being penetrated so violently,
54:47
so repeatedly over hours and hours every single day,
54:50
week on end, month on end, quarter on end,
54:52
year on end, is their pimp.
54:55
Now, he may call himself their manager,
54:58
that's how he would introduce himself,
55:00
but he's their pimp.
55:01
He's the one that's getting them the gigs,
55:03
otherwise finding them the Johns,
55:05
which is basically the way that you could think of it
55:07
that way as well, but they don't get a choice.
55:09
These women don't get a choice
55:11
as to whether or not they're going to be there.
55:13
They also don't get a choice
55:14
as to whether or not they participate
55:16
in whatever the director or producer
55:19
or whoever's in charge tells them to do.
55:23
So you've heard in Brittany told a lot of these stories
55:25
where they would sign a contract saying
55:26
they were going to be doing certain positions
55:28
with certain people at certain times
55:29
and all those things and then they show up
55:32
and it's, they didn't sign up for anal
55:35
and here they are, it's an anal video.
55:37
They didn't sign up for a gang bang
55:39
and here they thought one guy was going to be there
55:41
and there's 10 and guess what?
55:44
They don't get to opt out.
55:46
It's not just about, oh, if you don't do this,
55:48
you're not going to get paid.
55:49
Again, they're their manager, quote unquote,
55:52
which is to say their pimp is like you'll do this
55:54
or you'll suffer the consequences.
55:56
Brittany De LaMora had a minimum amount of money
55:58
that she had to bring to her pimp every single day.
56:01
I forget what the exact amount was.
56:03
I think it was like two grand a day is what she had to make.
56:05
Well, she wasn't scheduled to do a scene.
56:07
You know what she would do?
56:09
She would go on a back page,
56:10
which was like the, you know, the dark Craigslist
56:12
back in the day and she would go, you know,
56:14
give hand jobs and blow jobs
56:15
and have sex with random strangers
56:16
until she made her minimum.
56:18
And if she went above 2000,
56:19
there wasn't a rollover to the next day.
56:22
And so think about that.
56:23
If you want a good opportunity
56:25
to find a way to make your boner run away,
56:27
think about the fact that that is someone
56:30
who doesn't want to be there.
56:32
They're basically chained there.
56:34
They have to be there.
56:35
And for you fathers with daughters,
56:38
think about your daughter in this situation.
56:40
I know that's going to be a little bit macabre
56:43
and a little rough for some of you,
56:44
but that's someone's daughter that you're watching,
56:47
potentially being raped against their will
56:50
and you're using it for your sexual gratification.
56:53
That's someone's daughter.
56:55
What if it was yours?
56:57
Would you want a bunch of nameless, faceless loser men
57:01
dropping their pants to their ankles
57:03
and pleasuring themselves to somebody raping your daughter?
57:06
Seriously, think about that.
57:10
So in 2024, if you're looking for a way
57:14
to level up and avoid being a crappy man,
57:16
no porn, no jerking off.
57:18
All right, the number 11 way
57:19
to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
57:21
be known for what you are for
57:23
and for what you are against.
57:25
So this is a new one for 2024.
57:27
I think this may have been one from last year.
57:28
I can't exactly remember.
57:30
But there are a lot of people now that are third-wears.
57:33
These are people that are like,
57:34
look, as a Christian, as a loving person,
57:37
as someone who cares about humanity,
57:40
don't just be known for what you're against,
57:42
be known for what you're for.
57:44
And these morons think that that's something unique.
57:48
They think that that's an incendiary idea.
57:50
But you know what that is?
57:52
That's a slogan.
57:54
That's a bumper sticker.
57:55
That's a T-shirt because, and I've said this a lot,
57:59
but let me break it down for you guys.
58:01
If you communicate that you're for something,
58:03
you are automatically communicating
58:05
that you are against other things.
58:07
So let's take it to a sports analogy.
58:09
So I'll just pick a baseball team.
58:11
If you are for the Los Angeles Dodgers,
58:15
that's your team, you are communicating
58:18
that you are against the San Francisco Giants.
58:21
If you are for the St. Louis Cardinals,
58:23
you are against the Chicago Cubs.
58:25
If you are for the Boston Red Sox,
58:27
you are against the New York Yankees.
58:30
I think I caught most of you with those analogies.
58:33
When you communicate that you're for something,
58:35
you are automatically communicating
58:36
that you are against other things.
58:39
And Christians and conservatives,
58:41
I'll just lump you into one big category.
58:44
You get wrapped around the axle about trying to be nice.
58:47
Oh, I just wanna be nice.
58:49
And I don't really want people to think
58:51
that I'm mean or judgmental.
58:52
And so I'm just gonna talk about the things
58:53
that I'm for, not the things that I'm against.
58:55
Or if you're a preacher and you're like,
58:56
oh, I'm just gonna get into the culture war
58:59
and really dig into these divisive ideas,
59:01
I'm just gonna be about the gospel.
59:03
As if the gospel doesn't speak
59:05
into those areas of darkness.
59:08
Because what would the gospel say?
59:09
The good news of the gospel say about the fact
59:12
that millions and millions and millions of babies
59:14
are murdered in the womb every single year around the globe.
59:18
Does the gospel have an answer for that?
59:20
You're damn right, it does.
59:21
Can the gospel speak into the identity issue
59:25
that a lot of kids are going through right now
59:28
because it's been foisted upon them
59:29
by their public school teachers
59:31
or by their TikTok videos
59:32
or by all their different people
59:33
that they follow on YouTube,
59:35
saying that, hey, you're not just kind of weird
59:36
and socially awkward.
59:37
What you are is the opposite gender or the opposite sex.
59:41
Does the gospel have a message for that type of situation?
59:44
You're damn right, it does.
59:46
And so these people that are walking around
59:49
with this vapid ideology that if I just somehow
59:52
never ruffle any feathers
59:54
or never talk about these divisive issues
59:57
that things are just going to magically work out
59:59
that's not real.
1:00:00
That's why we are equipping them to push back darkness
1:00:04
'cause guess what, darkness does not push itself back.
1:00:07
Darkness doesn't choose to stop.
1:00:09
Darkness has to be stopped
1:00:12
and you have to be trained and equipped
1:00:13
to be able to do that
1:00:15
or just like I talked about with making yourself a weapon
1:00:17
from the very beginning of this episode,
1:00:19
you will fall to the level of your preparedness and training.
1:00:22
So in 2024, be known for what you are for
1:00:26
and for what you are against.
1:00:29
All right, the number 12 way to avoid being a crappy man
1:00:31
in 2024, don't pretend you know something that you don't.
1:00:35
So this is a repeat from last year.
1:00:37
This is basically relish the opportunity
1:00:39
to look like an idiot.
1:00:41
This is a big one for guys
1:00:43
because we love to pretend we know things that we don't know.
1:00:46
So maybe you're with a bunch of gear heads,
1:00:48
guys that turn wrenches for a living
1:00:50
and you're pretending like you know something
1:00:52
about how an engine works.
1:00:54
Maybe you're with a bunch of handymen,
1:00:56
carpenters or plumbers or things like that,
1:00:58
guys that know how to fix things
1:01:00
and you're pretending you know what a tool does
1:01:02
when you don't know what it does.
1:01:03
You're around a bunch of guys that are a fan of a particular
1:01:05
sport and they're using the language of that sport.
1:01:08
This is especially funny when people are watching MMA
1:01:11
and you're pretending like you know those things
1:01:13
when you don't.
1:01:14
And guys just don't do that.
1:01:17
The number of times I get excited when someone's like,
1:01:20
"Hey, do you know how this works?"
1:01:21
And I'm like, "No, I don't.
1:01:23
"Do you know how it works?"
1:01:24
Well, yeah, I know how it works.
1:01:25
Can you show me?
1:01:26
Can you show me how that works?
1:01:29
Hey, you know in Jiu Jitsu, it's like,
1:01:30
"Hey, someone will be like,
1:01:32
"Hey, do you know this position?"
1:01:33
And I'm like, "No, I don't know that position.
1:01:34
"Can you show it to me?"
1:01:36
When I was out with Greg Lappen in Utah
1:01:38
at Field Craft Survival, he goes,
1:01:40
"Hey, do you know, do you work Coyote Guard very often?"
1:01:43
And what if I was like,
1:01:44
"Oh yeah, you know, I work Coyote Guard from time to time?"
1:01:47
That wasn't the truth.
1:01:49
But what I said in that moment was I go,
1:01:51
"No, I'm never even gonna hurt a Coyote Guard.
1:01:53
"Can you show me Coyote Guard real quick?"
1:01:56
And you know how excited that made Greg?
1:01:58
Because he got to take something that he knows
1:02:00
that he's an expert at
1:02:03
and pass on that knowledge to somebody else.
1:02:06
So think of a situation.
1:02:08
Maybe it's building something or fixing something
1:02:11
or developing something or increasing something
1:02:13
or decreasing something or these types of things,
1:02:16
maybe it's money, maybe it's business,
1:02:18
maybe it's personal growth, maybe it's relationships,
1:02:20
maybe it's your family, maybe it's how you talk to your wife.
1:02:23
There are people in your life that know
1:02:26
how to do these things and you don't.
1:02:29
So stop pretending like you've got it all figured out.
1:02:32
'Cause I know most of you drive your nice new car,
1:02:35
you drive it into your nice neighborhood
1:02:36
with all the manicured lawns,
1:02:38
and you pull up into your driveway
1:02:39
and then you get out and you're thinking to yourself,
1:02:41
like, "Oh man, I know I don't have it going on,
1:02:44
"but I need to make sure nobody else realizes that."
1:02:47
Why?
1:02:49
Relish in the opportunity to look like an idiot.
1:02:53
Find that area that you just suck at.
1:02:56
Find that person that can lead you down that pathway
1:02:59
towards not sucking in those areas.
1:03:01
That's another thing that I'm gonna be announcing
1:03:03
hopefully here soon is providing a pathway
1:03:05
for a small number of men to be able to go down the road
1:03:09
of spiritual, mental, and physical resilience
1:03:11
better and more efficiently to level up
1:03:14
and allow these different areas.
1:03:16
But if you don't humble yourself to bring yourself
1:03:19
to the table and think, "I don't know how to do these things,
1:03:22
"I'm gonna humble myself and allow a guide to lead me,"
1:03:25
then how are you gonna level up?
1:03:29
You know, one thing that I've always,
1:03:31
I was so mad, I didn't grow up fixing things, right?
1:03:34
Because I was always doing sports in school.
1:03:35
That was it, that's all I did.
1:03:37
Sports in school and then church
1:03:38
whenever I started going in middle school.
1:03:40
And so I missed out on building things
1:03:43
and fixing things and these things that a lot of guys know.
1:03:45
Here's the thing my dad knew a lot of these things,
1:03:47
but he didn't show me 'cause we didn't have the opportunity.
1:03:50
It just never came up.
1:03:52
And so I get frustrated in my twenties and thirties
1:03:54
and all that, like, "I don't know how to do all these things."
1:03:56
Well, it's like, my wife one day was like,
1:03:57
"Well, why would you expect to know how to do these things?
1:03:59
"You've never done them."
1:04:02
If you've never thrown a spiral with a football,
1:04:04
do you know the number of men that have been able to pick up
1:04:06
that oblong, weird, shaped ball
1:04:08
and just lace it 40 yards in a perfect spiral, tight spiral?
1:04:13
No, that's the skill that has to be developed.
1:04:16
And a lot of those guys, they worked at it
1:04:18
or they had a guide show them.
1:04:21
And so guys, you're doing yourself a tremendous disservice
1:04:24
by pretending like you've got all these boxes checked,
1:04:26
but you don't, and that's okay.
1:04:27
So the number 12 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
1:04:30
don't pretend that you know something,
1:04:32
that you don't relish the opportunity to look like an idiot.
1:04:36
All right, the number 13 way to avoid being a crappy man
1:04:39
in 2024, this is a new one for this year,
1:04:41
be extra nice to support staff and service providers.
1:04:45
This is a big one for me
1:04:47
because I'm naturally very nice to people just in general,
1:04:51
right?
1:04:52
I'm not gonna overwhelm you with my niceness,
1:04:54
but I'm very polite, yes, ma'am, no ma'am, yes, sir, no, sir.
1:04:57
Could you please do this for me?
1:04:58
Oh, thank you so much.
1:04:59
Like those types of things,
1:05:00
that was ingrained in me from a very early age.
1:05:02
I would literally get in trouble if I didn't hold the door
1:05:05
for somebody as I was walking through it,
1:05:07
or if I didn't say thank you like, you know,
1:05:08
any parent worth their salt is gonna teach your kids
1:05:11
to do those things.
1:05:12
But I see that go out the window with people
1:05:14
when it comes to support staff and service providers.
1:05:18
I've watched men that I love and respect
1:05:21
speak to their secretary in a very, very rude way
1:05:24
when they're just asking a question.
1:05:27
I've seen people be very, very curt
1:05:30
to the point of being offensive to people
1:05:32
that were there to help them.
1:05:34
I've seen people be nice to everyone in their life,
1:05:37
everyone in their prayer group, everyone at their gym,
1:05:39
everyone at their whatever,
1:05:40
until they get to the restaurant
1:05:41
and they treat the person serving them their food
1:05:43
like they're an insect.
1:05:44
And I just don't understand that at all.
1:05:48
I've talked about before and I've lamented the fact
1:05:50
that if you go to any place where there's a service provider
1:05:52
these people basically don't wanna give you the time of day.
1:05:55
These people aren't paid well
1:05:56
or maybe they've got a bad upbringing or whatever
1:05:58
and they take their work day out on you
1:06:00
by not being nice to you and not being extra helpful
1:06:02
and not making eye contact and all of that.
1:06:05
But that's a them problem.
1:06:07
You don't get to control how they act.
1:06:08
They get to, you get to control how you act.
1:06:11
And so yesterday, this literally happened yesterday.
1:06:13
I'm at Cudoba and I'm in line and you know,
1:06:17
it's like, hey, you know what you want?
1:06:18
I'm like, okay, burrito.
1:06:19
And then the person back to me like,
1:06:22
'cause I was just expecting to quietly go through
1:06:23
and yeah, I want this on it.
1:06:24
I want this on it and I pay and then I leave, right?
1:06:27
And the gal was so sweet.
1:06:28
She just goes, how are you today, sir?
1:06:31
And I literally look up at her, make eye contact
1:06:35
and I go, I'm having a great day actually.
1:06:37
How are you?
1:06:39
Oh, I'm having a great day.
1:06:41
Did you have a good Christmas?
1:06:43
I'm like, I'm in line at Cudoba.
1:06:45
Like the number of times that an interaction
1:06:47
like this has happened with somebody that works at Cudoba
1:06:49
is basically never, I'm never rude to these people.
1:06:51
But this was an extra nice situation.
1:06:54
And think about if you had an opportunity
1:06:56
to share the gospel with that person.
1:06:58
This is a great key that I think is great for all of you.
1:07:02
When you get your food at a restaurant,
1:07:03
at a sit down restaurant, always ask this question,
1:07:06
'cause they always drop your food
1:07:07
and then they say, is there anything else I can get you?
1:07:09
Right?
1:07:10
It happens 95% of the time.
1:07:12
Say, yes, actually, we're about to bless our meal.
1:07:15
Is there something specifically we can pray for you about?
1:07:18
And then just shut up.
1:07:19
A lot of times you'll get kind of a surprise look
1:07:24
and sometimes you'll get like, no, that's okay.
1:07:26
Thank you for asking though,
1:07:27
or you'll get everything up to like what I've used
1:07:29
as an example.
1:07:30
There was this guy that goes,
1:07:32
dude, I'm two months sober today.
1:07:34
I'm living in a home right now that I can only stay there
1:07:37
if I keep this job and if I stay clean.
1:07:38
And, you know, I still got some bad friends
1:07:41
and I need to kind of get out of my life.
1:07:42
So dude, if you could pray for me about that, that'd be great.
1:07:45
And I say, great, thank you for sharing.
1:07:46
Would you like to stick around for us to pray?
1:07:49
And most of the time they do stick around
1:07:50
and I don't do these big, long, flarity prayers
1:07:52
or typically less than 30 seconds.
1:07:54
But gosh, isn't that a great way to serve
1:07:57
a service provider or a support person?
1:07:59
You're praying for them.
1:08:01
You're giving, maybe giving them hope,
1:08:03
maybe leading to a gospel conversation.
1:08:05
But so many of you, you have so many people in your life
1:08:07
that depend on you.
1:08:08
You try to be extra nice to your wife, your kids,
1:08:12
your business partners, your coworkers, your coaches,
1:08:15
your trainers, and then you forget about everybody else.
1:08:18
It's like you squeeze, you know, every amount of nice out
1:08:22
in a particular situation and you just,
1:08:24
there's nothing left to running out.
1:08:27
But be extra, extra nice to support staff
1:08:29
and service providers.
1:08:31
That's the number 13 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
1:08:34
All right, number 14 way to avoid being crappy man in 2024.
1:08:37
This will be on every list.
1:08:38
It has been up to now and it'll stay there.
1:08:40
It's don't be late.
1:08:42
Good grief, don't be late.
1:08:44
I'm a natural person.
1:08:45
That's an early person, right?
1:08:47
If we had to get to the ball field by four o'clock for a game,
1:08:51
my dad had us there by 3.30, 3.40 to get the latest.
1:08:54
I was always the first kid to practice, first kid to the game.
1:08:56
So I was born doing that, right?
1:09:00
But for those of you people that are constantly late,
1:09:02
well, you're communicating to people
1:09:04
is that your time is more valuable than their time.
1:09:07
So I use a couple of these examples every year,
1:09:09
but it just helps me elucidate the point.
1:09:11
There was this guy, I think it was a guy in Australia,
1:09:13
his buddy was his dentist.
1:09:16
And so every time you would go to the dentist
1:09:17
for a cleaning or a checkup or something like that,
1:09:20
his buddy would allow people to get in front of him, right?
1:09:24
'Cause so if there's a point when it was at one o'clock,
1:09:26
he wasn't getting back there until 1.45, two o'clock.
1:09:29
And so this person is losing out on his day.
1:09:32
And then finally one day he gets so fed up with it
1:09:34
that he goes up to the front and says,
1:09:35
"Hey, look, I'm just gonna please give me my files.
1:09:37
"I'm gonna change dentists like y'all have made me late again.
1:09:40
"I'm not doing that."
1:09:41
And so the dentist hears what's going on
1:09:42
and he comes out there and he's kind of, you know,
1:09:44
going to his friend like, "Hey, what's the problem?"
1:09:45
And he goes, "Dude, this is so rude,
1:09:48
"what you're doing to me.
1:09:50
"You're making me wait 'cause you don't think
1:09:52
"I'm gonna be mad about it, but that is so rude."
1:09:54
There's another guy, very good friend of mine,
1:09:56
a former businessman tour,
1:09:58
that if he had an appointment at 10 o'clock in the morning,
1:10:01
he would not go and get the person until about 10, 15, 10, 20,
1:10:05
'cause he wanted them to wait on him.
1:10:08
It was an ego thing.
1:10:09
He wanted to see more important and less, you know,
1:10:13
accessible by being late.
1:10:16
He was using lateness as a power play, as a tool, as a weapon.
1:10:20
And then there's other situations that I've ran into
1:10:23
where there are people that will actively make themselves late
1:10:26
and then not care about you in the process
1:10:30
and get mad at you if you point it out.
1:10:32
So if you're late to a meeting,
1:10:33
so let's say you're going to, I don't know,
1:10:35
business meeting with your sales team or something like that.
1:10:38
And let's say there's five people that go to this meeting.
1:10:41
The four of them are there,
1:10:43
they're ready for the 11 o'clock meeting
1:10:44
and you stroll in at 11, 10, okay?
1:10:47
You're thinking, I'm 10 minutes late, it's not a big deal.
1:10:51
I needed to get my mocha frappuccino or whatever
1:10:54
and I was in line and hey, no big deal.
1:10:57
Well, your 10 minutes late is not just about the 10 minutes.
1:11:02
It's about everyone in the room times the amount of time
1:11:05
multiplied by the amount of time that you were late.
1:11:07
So four people were waiting on you for 10 minutes.
1:11:10
So you didn't waste 10 minutes of time,
1:11:11
you wasted 40 minutes of time.
1:11:13
And if you have 100 people in the room
1:11:17
and you're the last person and they waited to get going
1:11:19
until you got there and you were 10 minutes late,
1:11:21
it's a thousand minutes that you wasted, a thousand.
1:11:24
And people just do this constantly
1:11:27
and they're refrained as, oh, I'm just a late person.
1:11:30
Hey, everyone in my family was late.
1:11:32
Ah, you know, everybody in my culture were late.
1:11:34
You know, time is just kind of relatable.
1:11:35
We'd live in the West where time is not relative,
1:11:38
time is bound specifically by what time it is.
1:11:41
So if you're supposed to be somewhere by nine
1:11:43
and you're not there by nine, that's a problem.
1:11:46
And here's the other thing.
1:11:47
If you are running late, it happens.
1:11:50
You were on your way out the door,
1:11:51
kid threw up, had to change their clothes,
1:11:54
had to do whatever, but guess what?
1:11:56
If someone's expecting you to be somewhere at 11 o'clock
1:12:00
and you know there's no way in hell
1:12:01
unless teleportation is invented in that moment
1:12:03
that you're gonna be there on time,
1:12:05
you know what you do?
1:12:06
You let them know.
1:12:07
Let these people know before you're late
1:12:09
that you're going to be late.
1:12:11
And so there's these people that they show up late
1:12:14
and then they give their story.
1:12:17
If they care at all, they'll be like, oh, yeah, you know,
1:12:19
kid threw up or blah, blah and all those types of things.
1:12:21
But if I don't know that you're,
1:12:23
if you wait until you're late to notify me,
1:12:26
that you're not telling me anything I didn't know.
1:12:29
I can watch the clock.
1:12:31
I can look down at my wrist and see that you're late.
1:12:33
So when you show up that like you're not giving me
1:12:36
any information that I didn't have.
1:12:38
Same thing with deadlines.
1:12:40
If your deadline is, I'm gonna get this to you
1:12:41
by end of business on Friday.
1:12:43
And if you don't do it and there's no communication,
1:12:46
what am I to expect?
1:12:48
Did you get eaten by a crocodile?
1:12:50
Did you fall off the edge of the planet
1:12:51
because the earth is flat?
1:12:53
Like, I don't know where you are.
1:12:54
I don't know where my deliverable is.
1:12:57
There is no benefit to being late.
1:13:01
So why in the world would you practice that?
1:13:03
On a day in, day out basis, be an adult,
1:13:06
be a mature human being and avoid being late.
1:13:11
Don't be late.
1:13:12
That's the number 14 way to avoid being a crappy man, 2024.
1:13:16
All right, just a few more left here.
1:13:17
The number 15 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
1:13:20
Start giving things a once over.
1:13:23
So this is a new one for this year.
1:13:25
Start giving things a once over.
1:13:27
I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of time on this,
1:13:29
but I feel like in modernity,
1:13:31
we don't care about how things look
1:13:34
or how they're read or anything.
1:13:36
We just wanna put it down and then just send it, right?
1:13:39
That's everybody's hashtag, send it.
1:13:41
That's all they wanna do.
1:13:42
So they write out a text and they don't read it
1:13:45
before they send it.
1:13:46
And there's errors, there's things that make the text
1:13:48
almost unreadable.
1:13:50
You're unable to discern what things look like.
1:13:52
You're writing an email,
1:13:54
whether it's to a friend or a business partner
1:13:55
or something like that.
1:13:57
And you don't give it a once over.
1:13:58
You don't read it beforehand or the worst one.
1:14:01
Is when people are giving presentations.
1:14:04
So they've got a presy or a PowerPoint or something like that.
1:14:07
And you could tell this person did not read
1:14:10
these things out loud.
1:14:12
There are words that are misspelled.
1:14:13
There are punctuation marks that are missing
1:14:16
that literally changed the meaning
1:14:18
of what they're trying to say.
1:14:19
And guess what?
1:14:20
People that can read and people that notice,
1:14:22
they're distracted by that now.
1:14:24
And I just don't understand why people
1:14:27
don't take the extra few seconds to check things out.
1:14:29
Now mistakes happen.
1:14:31
I've made mistakes on this show.
1:14:32
Literally just today,
1:14:33
I realized an episode that I released last year
1:14:36
was misnumbered.
1:14:37
It's been misnumbered for like 10 months.
1:14:39
And I had somebody pointed out on Instagram,
1:14:40
it's like, oh God, you idiot.
1:14:42
And it's like, of all the things that happened
1:14:44
on that episode, it was the one mistake,
1:14:46
but it was a significant one.
1:14:48
Because I, and I had looked at it,
1:14:50
but I just basically, before I posted it,
1:14:52
I didn't give it a once over.
1:14:54
So I certainly make this mistake as well.
1:14:56
But when you're doing something,
1:14:58
especially on a deliverable
1:14:59
or when you're communicating with somebody,
1:15:01
it's just a great practice to be in.
1:15:03
Especially if you're gonna be up talking in front of people.
1:15:05
I can't tell you how many times
1:15:06
it just frustrates me to no end.
1:15:09
When you see someone where it was such an obvious mistake,
1:15:11
it's like, you're not just communicating to me
1:15:13
that you made a mistake.
1:15:14
You're communicating to me that it wasn't important enough
1:15:16
for you to double check your work before you submitted it.
1:15:19
I mean, just go back to high school
1:15:20
when you're doing like a math test.
1:15:22
Didn't you like go back and look at your work
1:15:24
to make sure you haven't made a mistake?
1:15:26
Don't didn't you go back in your five paragraph essay
1:15:28
in your AP English class
1:15:30
to make sure that you didn't leave out a comma
1:15:32
or have some sort of comma splice
1:15:33
or do some sort of weird verb tense change
1:15:36
when you didn't need to.
1:15:37
You didn't go back and reread it.
1:15:39
Like of course you did.
1:15:40
Most of you worth your salt
1:15:41
that wanted to be a level up and be a good performer
1:15:44
would do those things.
1:15:45
So why not do that in everyday life?
1:15:47
So the number 15 way to avoid being crappy man in 2024,
1:15:50
start giving things a once over.
1:15:52
All right, just two more left.
1:15:53
The number 16 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024.
1:15:56
This is same as last year.
1:15:58
Figure out what's going on locally and get involved.
1:16:01
So this is a big one,
1:16:02
especially for all you policy walks out there.
1:16:04
You people that are like following the national elections.
1:16:06
Like you're so excited about 2024
1:16:08
because you're a guy Trump or you're a guy Biden
1:16:11
or you're a guy, whatever.
1:16:12
You're ready for the election.
1:16:13
You're ready to get things going.
1:16:15
Like I can tell you, whoever the president is
1:16:17
does have an impact on your life.
1:16:19
Whoever is a certain secretary,
1:16:22
like obviously like my orcas who's supposedly
1:16:25
in charge of the Southern border.
1:16:26
Like these national things do impact your life,
1:16:30
but you know what impacts your life a lot more?
1:16:33
Who your mayor is?
1:16:35
Who your sheriff is?
1:16:36
Who's on the school board?
1:16:38
These local offices that you can't even name
1:16:42
in your society or in your area
1:16:44
because you spend so much time worried
1:16:47
about what Donald Trump says or does
1:16:49
and whether or not he's gonna get elected,
1:16:51
that you forget about the fact
1:16:52
that the mayor doesn't know who you are.
1:16:54
And so if you have a problem that's going on in your city
1:16:56
and you're trying to get the mayor to do something about it,
1:16:59
well, they don't know you.
1:17:00
They don't have a relationship with you.
1:17:01
And you're gonna have to go Google who they are
1:17:03
because you don't even recognize this person.
1:17:05
There are state houses and state sentence
1:17:09
that most of you guys can't even name what district you're in
1:17:12
because you're so focused on who's gonna win
1:17:14
the Senate race in Pennsylvania.
1:17:16
Now I tell you all the time when I talk about on this show,
1:17:18
I have an international audience.
1:17:20
So I can't talk to you about the mayoral race
1:17:22
in Edmond, Oklahoma, 'cause that's not really gonna
1:17:24
have a huge impact on you as my consumer audience, right?
1:17:29
So it's a value to you to give you these larger concepts
1:17:33
and these larger things that are happening
1:17:34
on a national or international scale.
1:17:36
But as for me and my house, the Thompson household,
1:17:40
which is located in a zip code in Edmond, Oklahoma,
1:17:43
it behooves me to make sure I know exactly
1:17:46
who is lording over me, right?
1:17:48
You're gonna take Romans 13 seriously.
1:17:50
Who are these magistrates that are operating my city?
1:17:54
Are they doing things that I want them to do?
1:17:57
If the answer is yes, I will do what I can
1:17:59
to make sure that they stay in office and get reelected.
1:18:01
If they're not, it is incumbent upon me
1:18:05
to discuss that with them and or figure out ways
1:18:08
to get them out of office and to get people in there
1:18:11
that will do the things that I think is right for me,
1:18:13
my family and my greater community.
1:18:15
But you can't do that if you have no idea
1:18:18
what's going on locally.
1:18:20
So number 16 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
1:18:23
figure out what's going on locally and get involved.
1:18:26
All right guys, and last but not least,
1:18:28
the number 17 way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
1:18:32
focus on discipline, not motivation.
1:18:35
I talk about this all the time,
1:18:37
but I could give a crap less whether or not
1:18:39
you're motivated to do the thing that you wanna do.
1:18:42
Let's take the previous 16 things that I talked about.
1:18:45
If you came to me and we're having a sit down meeting
1:18:48
or something like that,
1:18:49
I'm trying to get you leveled up for 2024 and beyond.
1:18:52
And you're like,
1:18:53
well, Kyle, I'm not really motivated to do that.
1:18:56
I'm not really motivated to having sports
1:18:59
stop ruining my night.
1:19:01
I'm not really motivated to become a weapon.
1:19:04
I'm not really motivated to get in my porn
1:19:06
and jerking off thing under control.
1:19:08
You know what my response to you would be?
1:19:11
So?
1:19:12
So?
1:19:16
Is that an argument?
1:19:17
I'm not motivated?
1:19:19
Did you think you could say that to me?
1:19:21
And I would be like, oh, well, gosh, excuse me
1:19:25
for saying these things.
1:19:26
You're just not motivated.
1:19:28
So let's just not talk about it.
1:19:29
Let's not push you towards those things
1:19:32
because my gosh, you're not motivated.
1:19:34
What am I to do?
1:19:36
You certainly can't operate if you're not motivated,
1:19:39
but here's the thing that I do know.
1:19:41
There are a lot of you that are not motivated
1:19:43
to do things that you do anyway.
1:19:45
You're not motivated to go to work.
1:19:47
It isn't so funny.
1:19:48
Like I know teachers, like elementary school teachers
1:19:51
that they're late everything they do in their life,
1:19:53
but you know where they're not late to school.
1:19:55
They can get to work on time.
1:19:57
Isn't that weird?
1:19:59
When the class is ready to go in the morning and all that,
1:20:01
they're not waiting on the teacher to be there.
1:20:03
Where's Mrs. Smith?
1:20:05
There's none of that.
1:20:06
She's there, but in every other area of her life,
1:20:10
she's not motivated to be on time.
1:20:12
So she's not on time.
1:20:13
Again, I could give a crap less about motivation.
1:20:16
It's the discipline that gets you through
1:20:18
because I've done some speaking engagements
1:20:20
and some private meetings where people will say things.
1:20:23
They're like, well, Kyle,
1:20:25
you're obviously a very disciplined guy naturally.
1:20:28
What about for the rest of us?
1:20:29
How do we do the things that you're saying that we should do?
1:20:32
And I'm like, nope, nope, nope, nope.
1:20:34
I'm not gonna let you get away with that
1:20:36
because what you're trying to do is split a category.
1:20:39
You're not putting all of humanity in the same category.
1:20:41
You're saying, well, there are the haves,
1:20:43
the people that are born with discipline,
1:20:44
and then there's everybody else.
1:20:46
I'm in the everybody else category.
1:20:47
So what do you have for me?
1:20:49
And the thing is, it's like,
1:20:51
you're talking about motivation.
1:20:53
I don't care if you're motivated or not.
1:20:55
It's whether or not you get done what needs to be done.
1:20:57
Because here's the thing.
1:20:59
When I woke up early this morning
1:21:01
to go work out on my gym and I'm working through some injuries
1:21:03
and some ailments right now.
1:21:05
So I can't work out the way that I normally do.
1:21:07
So I was super not motivated to do the workout
1:21:10
that I needed to do or chose to do this morning.
1:21:12
Not motivated at all.
1:21:14
So when my alarm went off, I had a decision to make.
1:21:17
Am I gonna be driven by motivation or driven by discipline?
1:21:21
But guess what?
1:21:21
I had already pre-decided that I wasn't gonna wait
1:21:24
and see until I was the next morning
1:21:26
whether or not I was motivated.
1:21:28
'Cause that's what a lot of you guys do.
1:21:29
You wait until the moment comes
1:21:31
to decide whether or not you're gonna do the thing.
1:21:33
Working out's the easiest one.
1:21:35
So you set your alarm as if you're gonna wake up
1:21:38
and work out, but you're gonna decide in the moment
1:21:41
when your alarm clock goes off.
1:21:43
So when you're warm in your bed
1:21:45
and when the thought of getting up and moving your body
1:21:47
is nowhere near the front of your brain,
1:21:51
that's when you're gonna decide
1:21:53
whether or not you're motivated enough,
1:21:55
whether or not you have enough energy.
1:21:57
That's part of the reason why again,
1:21:58
I'm wearing this Garmin watch.
1:21:59
Great buddy of mine gave me this watch
1:22:01
and I'm so thankful for this watch.
1:22:02
It's a really cool watch.
1:22:03
You can do a lot of different things.
1:22:04
But there are people that will open up their Garmin app
1:22:07
in the morning to see how they slept,
1:22:09
they'll look at their body battery
1:22:10
and then decide whether or not they're gonna work out
1:22:12
because of what their app says.
1:22:14
I could tell y'all this much.
1:22:17
I could give a damn about what an app says
1:22:20
or what my watch says about what I should do that day.
1:22:24
Because I'm not gonna let motivation
1:22:25
or some outside source dictate what I do with my life.
1:22:28
I'm gonna let discipline dictate what I do with my life.
1:22:30
Guys, you know how many times
1:22:31
and I'm sure you've done this the same way.
1:22:33
Gosh, you just don't wanna read the Bible.
1:22:35
You're in a part of a particular book
1:22:37
that's just confusing.
1:22:37
Maybe there's some parables that don't make any sense.
1:22:39
And maybe the last time you read through commentaries,
1:22:42
made it worse and you were still confused.
1:22:44
And gosh, you're just not motivated.
1:22:45
You think God's like, okay, my son, okay, my daughter.
1:22:49
You're not motivated, so stop seeking me
1:22:52
because your motivation's low.
1:22:54
Really?
1:22:56
No.
1:22:57
What would God say to you
1:22:59
if he was talking to you directly
1:23:00
like how I'm talking to you right now?
1:23:01
It's like, okay, we'll do it anyway.
1:23:03
Well, why? 'Cause I said so.
1:23:05
So maybe that's what you need.
1:23:08
Maybe I get to be your bad guy
1:23:10
or whatever scenario you need to create in your head.
1:23:12
So you're like, I'm not motivated to work out.
1:23:15
Imagine I'm sitting there like right down
1:23:17
and just saying like, yeah, but you're gonna go work out.
1:23:19
Well, why Kyle? 'Cause I said so.
1:23:21
Okay, I guess I'll go and do it.
1:23:24
Well, hey, you should read this book.
1:23:27
Well, I'm not motivated to read this book.
1:23:28
We'll do it anyway.
1:23:29
Why? 'Cause I said so.
1:23:30
Read this book, it's gonna make you better.
1:23:33
Do it, do it now.
1:23:34
You have one week, finish this book.
1:23:36
Again, if you allow motivation to dictate
1:23:39
whether or not you level up as a man,
1:23:41
whether or not you check the boxes,
1:23:43
whether or not you're a good family man,
1:23:45
whether or not you're gonna be selfish in a moment
1:23:47
versus serving in a moment.
1:23:49
It's because you're letting motivation dictate
1:23:51
exactly how you act.
1:23:52
Stop doing that.
1:23:54
The last way to avoid being a crappy man in 2024,
1:23:56
focus on discipline, not motivation.
1:23:59
All right, guys, I appreciate you sticking here
1:24:01
