Hey guys, real quick. So, I've talked to men literally all across the globe about where they're missing the mark and how they want to improve. They normally talk about how they wish they were in better shape, they wish they had a better relationship with their loved ones, they wish they had more success and influence at work and some other stuff like that. But, here are some of the most common and biggest things that I hear. I wish I knew more about the Bible. I wish I could lead my family spiritually. I wish I could recall more scripture. The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience. At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience by digging into God's word. And well, we are welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with us. That's Dagan, that's Ryan, that's Howard. Guys, we're going to get right into it because last week we kind of went into verse 31 and 32 just a little ways. Um but I mean really we come off of 26 through 30, which is very comforting, talking about the intercession of the Holy Spirit. It's interceding like somebody that is seeing someone that's trapped and immediately interceding in an active sense. And then, you know, 31 through 39, which we're going to be looking at today, this is freedom from fear, right? It just shows that we cannot be separated from God and what he wants for us. And so, [clears throat] uh we'll start our discussion with 33 and 34, but we'll go ahead and read 31 through 34, so we'll back up to the beginning of the section. So, Howard, how about you go ahead and read Romans 8:31 through 34. >> 31 through 34. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Jesus Christ is the one who died, more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who intended who indeed is interceding for us. >> And so, really, you know, Christ is the judge. Uh I think that's really important here because it's like, hey, God didn't spare his own son for us, so that gives you an idea of his dedication to his creation. Go back to Abraham and Isaac. He proved um his dedication to the will of God over his own desires. Um that was the test that he passed. But I mean, right there uh in the middle of verse 34, more than that. So, who's in to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died. That seems like a pretty big sacrifice, but it's like, more than that. Who was raised? Right? Because Jesus dying, we have we don't we're not talking about him right now. If he died and stayed dead, we likely wouldn't be talking about him right now. I mean, maybe, cuz the Buddha's dead and here we are still talking about him in modernity. Muhammad's dead and here we he is still being talked about in modernity. But the thing with Jesus is the entire rescue plan was discovered when the resurrection occurred. And so, even going back to, you know, if God is for us, who can be against us, or as Ryan, you know, was talking about last week, if God is for us, like who cares who's against us? Like it's just we already have our future glorification. It's It's the already but not yet. Um and so, like why in the world, if Jesus or if God sacrificed his own son, would he not do other things like for our for our betterment and on our behalf? So, let's start discussion there with 31 through 34. >> I think one of my favorite episodes of to ask a pastor ask a pastor um you asked >> yeah, sorry, Joby. >> You asked Joby. Um what is Jesus doing right now? >> Yeah. >> And I was [clears throat] like what what what do we what do we usually think like Jesus is doing right now? I'm like, oh, Jesus is like, you know, hugging somebody who's going through a hard time or like you know, like you don't really think about it. And then Joby's like, sitting at the right hand of God interceding for us. >> Yeah. >> And I'm like oh my gosh, I never thought about it that way. You know, cuz we like we like to think of the hippy Jesus doing all this like, you know, he's out there spreading flowers and rainbows and whatnot. But um but no, like people are people who are believers are dying every day. >> Mhm. >> And he's sitting at the right hand of God and he's saying, that one's mine. >> Yeah. >> That one's mine. That one's mine. That one's mine. And [clears throat] like we don't we don't really realize that. And that's what I feel like Paul is getting at is like no, man. Jesus is sitting there interceding at the right hand of God for you. So, what do you have to worry about? >> I I think that's the thing. It's like I don't know how many Christians Donnie talked about it in our Sunday school class, but how many Christians question their salvation? >> Yeah. >> Right? And it's a true legitimate questioning of their salvation to where there's uncertainty. And when you read a passage like this that it says, he's interceding for you at the throne. And I you know, I don't know in what stretch in a person's walk that they're still facing that battle, but it's just like that's Satan keeping them in that place when there's so much more, right? They don't think that the Father he's he's interceded for me, he's continually interceding for me, but yet I'm sitting here worried about my salvation when there's so much more that Spirit wants me to be doing, and yet I'm in bondage over here to this fear when, you know, that's what Paul's telling them. Like why why are they these Jews and these Greeks, why are they so worried, right? Like you are saved. >> How much more plain can I make it? >> Well, if Satan can't keep you from Christ, he's going to try to make you ineffective. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Well, and I I imagine like, you know, Satan's the accuser. So, Satan is is telling God how bad we are, right? And he's pointing at Dagan Boyd and he's saying "Oh man he popped off to his wife. Look at him, what a loser." And then Jesus is on the right hand and [clears throat] he's interceding and he's got basically one response. And his response was, "I paid for that." Yeah. >> Mhm. >> Paid for that. Paid for that. Paid for that. And it's like he's got a lot of interceding to do. >> Just just to cover my life. >> Yeah. >> Right? Like bro is busy. >> Yeah. >> Well, the other thing that you look at, too, is like being a Christian, we've kind of humbled ourselves. And like we're not we're told not to take pride, you know? >> Mhm. >> And and be prideful in ourselves, but like there's one thing we can take pride in and that's what Christ did on the cross. >> Mhm. >> You know, and like R.C. Sproul's like said it a couple times, he'll ask like a group of pastors or people learning to become pastors or going through uh >> Um >> Oh, divinity school. Divinity school. >> And he'll be like, "How many in here are uh are are Christians know that you're saved and you're going to heaven?" And he's like, "It's very sparse who would raise their hands." He's like, "Take pride in that." >> Yeah. >> You know, because it's like you if if you believe the way I believe and the way I believe is you cannot lose your salvation. Yeah. You know, like there's nothing you can do and we'll go further into aid in regards to that, but but the thing is is just like take pride in what Christ has done on the cross and be and be secure in where you where you're standing is with God because God is secure at where you're at because he knows what his son has done for you. >> What's the scripture passages uh boasting all things something about boasting in him like not boasting in ourself but all this boasting in him. >> Yep. >> Boasting in him. >> In 33 and 34 you know one thing I I was reading this and you talked about like the different format that we've got and I and I love this format because it really just makes me I don't know where we're going to go and I don't know how far we're going to go. Yeah. So, I just like just read a lot and I got to go I got to go wide and I got to go deep cuz we don't we don't know where we're going to hit it. >> Yep. >> But, this caught me. It said who and this is the first time I've ever read this and thought this. Who could bring a charge against God's chosen ones? And then the second sentence starts with who is he who condemns? Well, I think the natural thing for us to think is that that's the devil, right? That the devil is bringing a charge against us and and that the devil is trying to point a finger of condemnation at us. But, when I read that I actually read that yesterday and for the first time I was like do you know how many times my like my conscience or my memory of past sin where I'm condemning myself where I where I like beat myself up and I'm bringing charges against myself? You know, like do you guys ever struggle with that where it's like something will come up or a conversation or something and it'll spur a memory of me and like I'll I'll hit an instant where I'm like I'm a terrible person. >> Well, I mean look verse 31 I mean Satan can't prevail if God is for us who can be against us but then 33 who shall bring any charge against God's elect? So, Satan is the accuser, right? That's one of his nicknames. He's the accuser, but he has no grounds for accusation for those who are in Christ. His grounds for accusation for those that are in Adam, they're adequate, right? And they they certainly they they work and he's always going to be on the favorable position there. But, Satan's evidence for [snorts] um for his grounds of accusation are is our sin. That's his evidence is our sin. But, if we are in Christ, we have imputed righteousness. And imputation is a one-way street, right? It is from the Father given to us. If we go back even a few weeks, right? We were adopted as sons. We're all descendants of God, but we were adopted as sons of God to great cost to our adoptive father, right? And so, it's like but that is a victory that we have that is guaranteed through glory, but most Christians aren't, you know, living that victory because they're doing some form of navel-gazing and Satan's doing a great job making them as ineffective as possible. >> Satan's using the law. I mean, God God we can't stand before God because of our sin. We don't have righteousness. We We're not righteous enough to stand before him and Satan's pointing out each and every unrighteous thing that we've done. And And then like I just imagine like it's me sitting there in front of God just like all stretched out head on the ground and Satan's like, "Yeah, he did this. He did that. He treated his wife that way. He treated this person that He flipped this person off on the road. He cussed when he like burned his foot. You know, he's done all these things." And And then And then Christ is like, "Yeah, but I I said he could be with me in paradise. I paid for it all. He's He put his trust in me and knows the beauty of what I've done and his sins are forgiven. You know, and that's what he's doing. He's like interceding for us. It's It's a beautiful picture if you think about it. >> I like how so we were we text a little bit back and forth about some of these translations and I read in ASB a lot and the way it puts it in ASB in ASB is that he freely gave us. Okay, great gave us all or gives us all things. And but if you look at the ESV it says he graciously gives us all things, right? And I think I think that's the I don't want to say the truest you know, translation but I think it fits the most. It wasn't it's not free, right? It but it's graciously. It It was a great cost. But out of grace he continually pours that out on us and I just I love the way that translates it. >> You took a big deep breath so you look like you're about to say something. >> Man, I was just about to get into it. I didn't want to get into it. No, I just have some other things I was thinking about cuz I was thinking about that whole picture. And then I had like another picture just kind of hit me in the head where it was just like you know, Christ like this is me getting on you about uh the the Trinity. >> So like Christ like they're all together and it's like Satan be there accusing us and God's like he's already chosen my son. He's already chosen my son. Like none of this matters. Like quit accusing him. Move on. You know, bring on the next subject, you know. And so it makes me think that as well when you when you bring up that portion of what you talked about. >> Did any of you come across this? I thought this was good. Um Did we read into 33 already or we still on 32? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, we're on 33. >> Going to 35. >> So the 33 um one of the commentaries put this it's like four reasons a believer can never be found guilty. And it's verse 33. Christ death, his resurrection, his exalted position and his continual intercession. And just remembering those four things like that's our security and it points it right out there in 33. These are the four reasons that it can't happen. He's continually interceding for us. You know, he's in that position that that makes that judgment call, you know, and his death and resurrection paid it all. >> Well, I just think back to predestination and foreknowledge. Like we just talked about Job the last episode and how like uh the devil was like, "Yeah, I'm going to and fro on on the earth." And God's like, "Well, have you looked at my servant Job?" And he's like, "Yeah, but he's he's only trusting you because you do all these good things for him." And he's like, "Nah, do what you want. Just don't kill him." >> Mhm. >> Because God foreknew and predestined from the beginning, he knew exactly what Job was going to do. >> Yeah. >> And so it's just like we have to remember that. Like God knows he's I think that's like like the hardest part to get your head around is just like, man, maybe my knowledge is not God's knowledge. And so I have to like put my my thoughts into his hands and just dive into the mystery. >> Mhm. >> I'm John Downsome mega notes space on what we talked about and y'all going, "Yeah, I hate the dead air, but it's worth [laughter] it." You know, you know. Well, let's go ahead and get into this next section because I think it's important as we continue to discuss this. So, Dagon, go ahead and read 35 and 36 and then we'll we'll take it from there. >> Verse 35. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written, "For your sake, we are being killed all the day long. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." >> So, that is a reference to Psalm 44:22 and actually I want Ryan's going to read the entirety of Psalm 44 in the NLT. But again, just remember what we talked about last week when I just brought it up. I mean, tribulation, distress, persecution famine nakedness danger the sword. You've have every potential box that comes with it an unbelievable amount of negative feelings, negative outcomes, pain, strife. There's not a category that's left left here. But I thought it was important when I went back and read all Psalm 44 to you know, where we could get where he pulls out for your sake, we are being killed all the day long, we are regarded as sleep sheep to be slaughtered. That's not it. That's not the entire story. There is a refrain to the story, but I did want us to go ahead and get into Psalm 44 and you're going to read in the NLT. >> NLT. Oh God, we have heard it with our own ears. Our ancestors have told us of all you did in other days, in days long ago. You drove out the pagan nations and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies, setting our ancestors free. They did not conquer the land with their sword. It was not their own strength that gave them victory. It was by your mighty power that they succeeded. It was because you favored them and smiled on them. You are my king and my God. You command victories for your people. Only by your power can we push back our enemies. Only in your name can we trample our foes. I do not trust my bow. I do not count on my sword to save me. It is you who gives us victory over our enemies. It is you who humbles those who hate us. Oh God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You have You no longer lead our our armies to battle. You make us retreat from our enemies and allow them to plunder our land. You have treated us like sheep waiting to be slaughtered. You have scattered us among the nations. You sold us, your precious people, for a pittance. You valued us at nothing at all. You have caused all our neighbors to mock us. You are an We are an object of scorn and derision to the nations around us. You have made us the butt of their jokes. We are scorned by the whole world. We can't escape the constant humiliation. Shame is written across our faces. All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. All this has happened despite our loyalty to you. We have not violated your covenant. Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. You have crushed us in the desert and you have covered us with darkness and death. If we had turned away from worshiping our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, God would surely have known it and he knows that the secrets of ever and he knows the secrets of every heart. For your sake, we are killed every day. We are being slaughtered like sheep. Wake up, oh Lord. Why do you sleep? Get up. Do not reject us forever. Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? We collapse in dust, flying face down in the dirt. Rise up. Come and help us. Save us because your of your unfailing love. >> I mean, you want to talk about a Psalm of lament. It's lament. It's lament. Lament, desolation, >> [snorts] >> nakedness, famine, the sword, being killed. And but look at the very end. Please read the last verse, if you wouldn't mind, Ryan. Verse 26 of Psalm 44. >> Rise up and come and help us. Save us because of your unfailing love. >> Yeah, save us. Ransom us. Because of your unfailing love. Immediately, we get the hint as to the writer of this Psalm, what he knows is going to happen. He's describing in detail the situation, right? And think about anytime in human history when Christians were under real persecution. The Christians right now in Africa, the in Nigeria specifically, the Christians right now in the Congo, the Christians in Iran, in China, in North Korea, places where Christianity is exploding, by the way. How in the world does that happen? Think about the Christians in the first century, right? You talked about Roman candle when you had uh Nero, when you had Caligula, and you had all these different individuals, you know, making a mockery of destroying um Satan, you go back or destroying these Christians for the sake of Satan. You go back to the Crusades and you had what the Muslims did to Christian men, women, and children, uh the mockery of Christian holy sites and holy relics, and you know, doing it with complete power and, you know, we're not going to be subject to anybody because of this. We're the victor and all those types of things. But, there's the refrain right there at the end, ransom us because of your unfailing love. You know what I mean? Like that's that's why this entire section of Romans 8:31 through the end of the chapter, verse 39, it's all talking about God's everlasting love, God's unfailing love. It cannot fail, right? Satan cannot succeed. And, you know, it's just a good reminder for us that regardless of our circumstances, you know, no matter how dire, uh we win in the end and there is victory because our glorification is coming. >> Well, and Paul goes into end on verse 37, "No, in all of these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." So, it it is because of his love that we have the ability to endure and not only endure, but actually conquer those things, right? Like we're more than conquerors of those things because of that love. I mean, he goes back to 24 and 25, too. "But, if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with patience, right? That's that That's that everlasting hope that it has to be so deep within us and I I don't I don't know if we appreciate the the struggle. I don't think we as Americans see the struggle that >> And you >> so many people >> Oh, yeah. >> You talk about the struggle and we talk about like we we talked about like this isn't going to be easy. Like we're going to This is This isn't like we're going to go through hard things and like what really stood out to me after reading that was 17 and 18. All this has happened despite our loyalty to you. We have not violated your covenant. Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. And so they're going through a testing time right now, but they're they like there's going to be times that we've stayed true to the gospel or we stayed true to our sanctification but >> times are going to happen >> and I went and looked it up in Moody just cuz I was like, man, that really like just kind of stuck out to me. I was like, are they calling out God right now or or or what? And then it reminded me of Job and so I'm like, you know, Job Job had his his times where he called out to God like, why is this happening? What have I done, Lord? And all his friends are telling him like, man, you sinned somewhere. You messed up somewhere. But Moody pointed this out. He says the psalmist affirmed but we have not forgotten. The people were faithful to God's covenant, the Mosaic covenant. Therefore, he considered the alternate possibility that the distressing situation facing his people was not intended as correction, but rather as an occasion for testing or refinement as in the case of Job saying, our steps have not deviated from your way is closely parallel to that of Job in defending his own integrity. The perspective of refinement rather than correction is understood. But for the sake of God but for the sake of God but for your sake we are killed all day long. They were suffering although they had not forgotten the name of God. And then they go into the rest that we're talking about now. They appeal to his loving kindness. >> Mhm. >> Rather than like blame everything on God. Why would you allow this? What kind of what kind of loving God are you? No, they know his love and they appeal to it. >> Well, and and and you know, we've talked about suffering. Suffering is a normal thing for us to experience, right? So, they're really just talking about the suffering they're going through and then throwing themselves at the mercy of God's love. Which is how we should respond to suffering, right? >> Absolutely. >> just complaining. They're coming right, yeah. >> Right. >> And it's like, you know, you I read these words and how many of you can say that you've experienced any of these words? Oppression. Like really. Persecution. >> No. >> May maybe Kyle a little bit more if he's reading the comments. >> Oh boys, I should show you all my DMs sometime. >> Famine. >> Mhm. Yeah, no. >> Famine. >> Nakedness. >> Only chosen nakedness. >> I was going to say >> [laughter] >> nakedness. >> If there's any nakedness that people are afraid of it's >> Peril or sword. And and God bless the the people in the United States military that are out there taking up the sword like physically uh defending our our liberties. But like I read those words and I'm like, man. >> Well, and I I'm a I'm a I'm a cupcake. >> Well, and I I look at dude, so I look at the work specifically. I I value so much the work of Raymond Ibrahim. Um he's one of the foremost living scholars of the Crusade era. He's a Christian. He his parents, I think, were Coptic uh Christians and he can read Arabic. He So, he reads um like all the first hand accounts from from all those eras. He has three tremendous books: Sword and Scimitar, The Defenders of the West, and The Two Swords of Christ. And I did a batch of um Daily Blade episodes on five of the people they talked about in Defenders of the West and you know, I talked about the Cid and Skanderbeg and you know, Richard the Lionheart and some of these guys. And when I see what some of these men did and what they had to endure, I can't remember which one it was, but he was forced to watch as all of his men were beheaded around him. >> Mhm. >> Right? And to see one by one the level of Christian dedication to these men and of these men. Um, you know, one of them walking to, you know, the church the Holy Sepulchre Sepulchre and walking there barefoot um, and there was one guy, I can't remember his name, but he he literally fought like on top of his dead horse and he held off like a thousand Moors, I think it was. It was a thousand Muslim fighters. He knew he was dead. Like it was such an unbelievable stand that even the Muslim scholars recorded it and the Muslim scholars recorded almost exactly the same way as the the Christian scholars and historians recorded it. And these guys weren't doing it for personal glory. They weren't doing for the largess of their name. Most of them, you know, they went broke. They were, you know, put in these horrible um, states and, you know, financially from a from a any kind of perspective. And it's like these guys risked everything for the sake of Christ and to keep the satanic influence that is Islam from taking over Europe, Christian Europe. And I'm like we got people in modern day that don't want to stand up to a college professor that's [snorts] you know, saying mean things about Jesus. And you know, Christians will even I remember when those St. Louis St. Louis the the San Francisco Giants players wrote you know, during the Pride Night celebrations for the San Francisco Giants, they had the San Francisco Giants hats with the the pride flag the pride progress flag colors in their logo and some guys refused to wear it and other guys wrote the Genesis verse talking about the no a covenant how and what the rainbow actually means and does have the the temerity of some Christians to look at those guys and call them unloving for basically standing up and being like no no no the pride flag has that rainbow has six stripes on it but how many stripes does the rainbow have that God made? Seven. Roy G Biv has seven stripes. Everything that God creates Satan counterfeits, right? And so to have Christians that one if they were put in that position certainly wouldn't stand up there would be no Shadrach Meshach and Abednego in in their bones and then to then point at those people and be like oh well they're just being needlessly divisive, right? >> Yeah. >> Uh those are the people that are that are making agreements with the culture of death and it's like we're not anywhere near the situation that those Crusaders went through, the first century church, the churches described in Acts, what what the Apostle Paul had to go through, what happened to all of Jesus' disciples. One died by suicide, one died basically in exile and the other 10 were horrifically murdered, right? And here we are we're getting mad at mean tweets. It's like I I mean we're getting what we deserve I guess. >> Okay, so this this was a a great lead into exactly what you said. This is passage in Jeremiah 48 and it talks about Moab. Okay, so it says Moab has been at rest from youth like wine left out. Oh, sorry. I think we got Oh, we got the Thompson boys coming through. >> How was the game? >> Hey boy. >> Hey, what's up boys? >> Oh. >> fun? >> Yep. >> Did they win? >> Yeah. >> Did they win here? >> They missing. >> The Dozers are winning. >> The Dozers >> The Dozers Dozers win. >> Come on. Hey, say hi to the people in the audience. Say hi to the microphone. Say hi to the microphone. >> Hey. >> Okay, got that one. Eli, come over here. Are you all about to go to bed? >> Hey. >> Hey, okay. Well, that is James and Eli. Are you all about to go to bed? >> Yeah. >> Okay, good night. Love you. >> I'm next, guys. >> Give Eli >> Give us a buddy. >> Good night, boys. >> Hey, I'm going to get some knuckles before you guys go. >> Give some knuckles. Oh, all right. >> [laughter] >> Go around. Give Uncle Ryan some knuckles. Not Mom. >> He's like GIVING MOM KNUCKLES. OH, POWERFUL. HE ALMOST KNOCKED HIM OVER. >> ALL RIGHT. [laughter] Thank you, Undaunted Wife. Uh much appreciated. Well, uh I would never uh tend interrupt you during uh scripture reading. So, uh Howard, if you might wouldn't mind taking it from the top. >> Uh so, Jeremiah 48 uh verse 10, it says, "Moab has been at rest from youth, like wine left left on its dregs, not poured from jar to one jar to another. She has not gone into exile. Um so, she taste as she did, and her aroma is unchanged. But days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will send men who will pour from pitcher to pitcher, and they will bring her out. They will empty her pitcher and smash her jars. Mo- Moab will be ashamed um Moab will be ashamed. So, uh in the commentary, it's talking about Moab has been at rest. It hasn't been poured from jar to jar. And so, he likens this to this idea of refinement of wine, right? And so, it's in a wine jar, and the dregs slowly come down, right? And then it's poured into another jar, and the dregs simmer down again, and so it continues to be refined. And so, he's he's likening that to the to Moab, who's not been refined with with no challenges in its life and its and its nation. And so, >> Mhm. >> the time is coming when it's when when their their due is going to come due, and they're going to be challenged. And so, it's just a beautiful picture of like is are we taking those opportunities when we're challenged and we have struggles to be refined? Are we embracing those? Uh >> And you know, and I was reading that I'm just like, man, do I have enough struggles? You know, we don't think we ever want to pray for struggles, but when you read that and you think I want to be refined. And he he likens it to Israel and it's like Israel is being refined to to that sweet aroma and that sweet taste, right? And it's just >> Paul's perspective, you know, it considers it pure joy. Like, I don't go into anything that starts to get remotely comfortable joyful. I start to complaining and trying to look for an exit ramp and and like but but you're exactly right. It's like I if if you know that God's goodness comes out on the other end, no matter how it plays out then just be glad that God cares enough about you to put that stuff in your life to make you more like Jesus. >> why I talk about and people have heard me talk about this before, but for anyone that's new um I was doing interviews for my Dominion program and these are guys that are like they're fed up. They're they're stuck in the mud, like they're they're they're needing a reset or whatever and you know, this is a 6-month, you know, intensive discipleship program. And this was, you know, a year ago or so, I was doing a bunch of interviews and like this particular day back-to-back-to-back-to-back these interviews, these guys kept using the same phraseology. Man, I'm just really struggling right now. I'm just you know, really struggling at work or I'm in my I'm really you know, my marriage, we're really struggling right now and I'm struggling to have influence with my kids and I'm just struggling to get in shape and I'm I'm I'm just struggling with porn and masturbation. I'm just struggling and struggling. And I had gotten so frustrated at this point that I kind of snapped on this guy in a good way, hopefully, where I said no, you know what, dude, you're not struggling. Because if you were struggling, you'd have more victory by now. Cuz what do you think victory takes? Struggle. Like, getting in shape takes struggle. Having an Ephesians 5 marriage takes struggle. You know, raising up your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord takes struggle. Bible study takes struggle. Your sanctification process is one long gigantic struggle. You're You're struggling. You're seeking the off ramp. You're seeking comfort and you're finding it, right? That's why you're where you're at right now. That's why you're on this call with me is because you made a bunch of agreements because you wanted to be comfortable, right? And so this idea cuz again, the idea isn't hey, I'm going to go try to find as much struggle as possible like when you have these certain, you know, sects of Catholicism and all that like uh what was Opus Dei as you saw in like the Da Vinci Code or whatever like they have the chalice around their leg and they're you know, self-flagellation and all that kind of stuff. That's not what we're talking about. But again, you you already read verse 37, "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." First of all, shout out to Impending Doom, maybe the greatest worship song of all time. More than conquerors, check it out. Yeah, it's a worship song. Impending Doom, more than conquerors, we'll play it on our way out. Uh but the more than conquerors phrase, that means we are super conquering, right? We we are overwhelmingly conquering. We we prevail completely. So think about two warring factions, right? Whether it's governments or tribes or militaries or whatever. Imagine what you have to do to prevail completely. That is scorched earth. That is we're going to kill everybody, we're going to take everything and then we're going to salt the fields, right? So this land is even worthless. That's who we are in this entire situation. We are just like that through him who loved us, right? And again, Christians are put off by the struggle and they're not seeking to to live from victory, right? They may intelligently or intuitively know hey, we have victory here, but they're not living from it. >> Yeah. >> I mean, do you think when it when it comes to the struggle like we're afraid to struggle, but are we like making the sacrifices of Cain rather than Abel? >> What do you mean? >> Within our struggle. Like it's like all right, those guys are struggling. I I want to be uh I want to I want to disciple my children. But like what what sacrifices are they making to disciple their children? They're like they're like I'm dealing with the struggle, but there's no victory because their sacrifices are going in the wrong direction. It's like Cain. It's like his sacrifices were were were thimble deep. You know, but Abel's sacrifices were uh fresh aroma to the Lord. And so it's just like am I giving my best sacrifices to my children, to my wife to bring them to bring an Ephesians 5 marriage and to bring up my kids in the in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? I don't I don't know if I said that right, so I'm sorry, Joby. Um >> It was close. >> But admonition >> Yeah, I can't >> Yeah. >> ab ab >> ab >> ad >> ad >> ad >> ad >> admonition >> admonition >> But like that's the thing. It's like what sacrifices are we actually making? >> guys aren't doing anything. >> Well, like and they're making like weak sacrifices. >> Yeah. I'm fruit fruitless yeah fruitful sacrifices. >> I know a lot of guys who struggle with their relationship with their kids, but in their minds they're very thoughtful, they're very intentional, but they are focusing they are they are fathering out of what they consider quality moments instead of the quantity of moments with their kids, right? They're counting on well, I don't I I travel for work and and I I travel for work a little bit too, so I don't want to dog anybody for traveling for work. But you still make time, right? No matter what your circumstances are, but they think or or it's or or they're choosing some stuff to do for themselves and they think, well, I'm going to make it up on vacation. Or I'm going to take him someplace on Saturday. >> Saturday. >> Or right. Or or one one day a week we're going to I'm going to take him to you know, breakfast before school drop-off and we're going to have we're going to talk about the Bible. And it's like they count on the quality of the calendar rather than how many days and how much time. You know, and and and my personal opinion is quantity is going to trump quality every single time with your kids. >> Well, and actually if you look at there's been some interesting sociological data done where they talk about some of the most um important memories in a kid's life typically are centered around experiences and not things. So, what do we mean by that? So, let's say you know, your eldest will uh wants a particular Lego set for his birthday and let's say he gets it and more. Or you and Lady Horn take your three children including will on some sort of a trip. You go to Southeast Oklahoma, stay in a cabin, you know, hang out, fish, do that type of thing. When he becomes an adult he's not going to remember with you know, as much clarity the Lego set and more. He's going to remember the experience. But, to Dagan's point, yes, you create those experiences, but true discipleship is consistent dedication in the same direction over time. That's why I tell guys, no matter what the thing is in your life, the bill comes due every morning. I can't work out today for tomorrow. I can't study a Bible today for next week. I can't disciple my kids today for next year. The bill comes due every morning. And basically what that does is it provides you a new opportunity to fail big, right? That That's what you're given every day. You're given an opportunity to fail and way too many guys find an excuse to lose. And that's the one thing I try to change guys' mindset is like, wake up tomorrow with an excuse to win. Find a way to win and I mean, that's what we're talking about, trying to work from victory as if we are more than conquerors. >> Well, I think of like when you said like quality over or quantity over quality, it's like it's like when my wife and I when we were talking about like you know, like hey, you we have kids and I do this and you need to do this as like 50/50. You know, like all right, do I need to find quality and 50 quantity? No, when it comes to quality and quantity with my kids, I need to give 100 100. When it comes to quality and quantity for my wife, I need to give 100 100. Like, it shouldn't be an either/or. It should be like, "Hey, if I'm going to have that quantity, I need to make sure there's quality with it. And if I'm going to have that quality, I need to I need to bring up as much quantity as I can." >> that's for sure. I'm not saying >> No, I know I know you're not. I was just I was just >> You just have to have the time that you don't need to be a good person, right? >> Yeah. >> But like, you know, like your example with the kids, like, man, get your kid the LEGO set. Sit with him and do it while they put the LEGOs together, man. Because that's what they'll remember. >> in the floor, sit Indian style. Are we allowed to say that? Or sit cross-legged. And like, you know, get after it. Like, help them get after >> Yeah. I mean, like like that's the thing that like that that I remember about my dad. I'm one of five kids. And my dad Are you really? >> Yeah. I was the oldest of five. >> No, I'm in the middle of five. >> All right, yeah. >> Yeah, you had a rough >> I did have a rough >> [laughter] >> So, but my dad, I don't know how he did it, but he coached every sport and was at every practice. Like, I like it's like he has 48 hours in a day. And it's because that was more important to him than anything that he could have done for himself. >> So, you bring up that and I think of my dad, and I love my dad dearly, but he traveled a lot. And so, like, his thing was always the quality over the quantity. So, like, he never very rarely came to my games as a kid. Um but like, he'd always be like, "Take us took us on vacation" or something like that. We always remember that. But I think what really stuck out for me and where my dad and I's relationship kind of really grew is we started going to Bears games for our birthdays every year. And those are the things I remember us sitting out in negative degree weather watching the Bears lose or win or whatever. >> Soldier Field in the crazy weather. >> You know, like, and there There point that I love Chicago so much, I was going to take a job and move to Chicago. My dad's like, "No. Like, I don't want to I don't want you to move, you know? Like, we were just building a relationship." And so And so like that's that's the thing to look at is like All right. May not have the quantity like you talked about, but >> But it sounds like it sounds like he gave you what he could. >> He he gave what he could. >> Right. >> Yeah, and then he had five kids and he had to provide for all five kids. >> Right. It's like there's a lot of people that travel for work. I mean, I'm in the oil and gas business and I know that I mean, there are people that are all over the place all the time. Sometimes they're like you know, 14 14 on 14 off kinds of things. Well, 14 if I'm on out on a rig in the middle [snorts] of the Gulf of America, I don't even know what we're calling it these days. >> We're calling it that. >> If if if I'm out on a rig for 14 days and then I have 14 days off, the easy thing to do is go play golf, go hang out with my friends, you know what I mean? But like whatever you have available, make the most of it. >> Mhm. Yeah, cuz you're because the thing is is you're not going to remember that round and what you shot, but your kid's going to remember that you walked out, gave him a kiss on the head and say, "I'll see you in a few hours." >> Right. After after whatever your your traveling was, your long day at the office and you're coming home after dinner and when you walk into that house you you need to you need to love your wife in that moment and then you need to immediately go love on your kids and let >> And put your phone down. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. That's what I talked about with my guys. >> And I am yours and you are important and that's all I need. >> Cuz it like that's one of the things we talk about with my kids. It's like I I struggle with it at times, but I try to be intentional about when I come home, I put my phone down and I connect with with my wife for 15 20 minutes before I go do anything else. >> Yeah. >> And it's like it's that time that we've been apart, we connect and then I go do something with the kids. And it's it would be easy to come home, and I talk to guys at my office, and it's like, "Man, when they come home, like, I need my alone time to kind of disconnect." And I'm like, Yeah, no, that's not when you >> fiddle in the garage, and I would totally need that when I get done, but it never happens. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> So, it's like, put your phone down because it it just sucks you in, and and it will keep you, and it will hold your attention. And those kids, we had this conversation the other day. It's like, when you go to a kid's sporting event, if you ever watch your kids when they're on the floor, where are they looking? >> They're looking for mom and dad. >> at you, right? >> I've got my >> And they see the top of your head, you know, we we had this conversation. It's like, what do you want your kids to remember you as? With your head down, or looking at them and connecting? And that is a That's an epidemic we have in our >> Oh, for sure. >> society right now is lack of connection with them and connection with that. >> Yeah. I was just thinking about that when you said that, and my kids had their gymnastics thing. >> Mhm. >> And like, you know, I'm taking pictures when we're we're doing doing this. But like, yeah, like I I I'm looking, he's just looking straight at me. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> Like, >> eyes are just like, teachers over there, he's just looking straight at you. Cuz they're just happy. They're happy their dad's there, you know? And it's just like, you got to live in those moments. You got to sacrifice for those moments. >> Is that a lesson for us, maybe? >> Always a lesson for us. >> To think of Do we look to the father? Right? When we're doing those things, do we look to the father and think, like, am I making him proud now? Am I doing doing the work of the father? >> Oh, for sure. >> Just a thought. >> Well, it's like, thank you, Father, for let me be in this position. >> Yeah. >> You know, like, and convict me if I if I ever start to feel like >> Mhm. >> it's not worth it. >> Yeah. >> Or my phone's worth more. >> I think we do the same a lot of times we can have the same relationship with God that we just talked about. Like I like I'll give you 15 minutes at the beginning of my day. So we're counting on this little I'm going to give you the time, but it's going to be 15 I'll give you 15 good quality minutes. And it's like bro, you're missing out on a lot of day >> Yeah. >> and a lot of father, right? You're crying out for father for 15 minutes. Like you know, your life must be pretty straight if that's if that's the amount of connection that you're dedicating to this guy. >> Well, I can see like when I dive into the word and it's it's kind of sad when I look at this because like I'm either I'm like two months on one month off for Forging Table and like when I'm like diving deep in the word and I'm doing this for the Forging Table like my marriage >> Oh, yeah. >> is like it looks totally different than the one month that one month that I'm off and I kind of just delve into it just in case I get a call, you know, and it's just like man I am missing out not only on a relationship with the creator of the universe but I'm also missing out on lessons on how I can be a godly husband and father. >> Yeah. >> Well, it's all the I mean man, you've got fruit to bear to your family. You know, and it's like I don't want little these little shriveled up raisins that they're like what the [laughter] heck am I supposed to be producing here, like I want I want the I want it to be nourishing and good and like you're exactly right. Like I want I want the fruit that I have to be eternal fruit not earthly. >> Let's talk about the eternal fruit a little bit and then we'll get into 38 and 39. So every desire of our heart was put there by God. Agree? >> Yeah. >> Like the the the moral godly desires were put there by God. Yes, not our carnal desires. Um had to caveat that. So, if we desire to leave a legacy, well, our heavenly Father desires legacy as well. And so, for us, having some sort of legacy that we can pass down, we talked about uh our buddy Foster that that passed away. He has a gospel legacy that is going to get all over his daughter, and you know, her his daughter is not going to have a memory of him, right? But, she's going to live off of the fruits of her daddy's gospel legacy. And I think about as well because, you know, we've talked a lot at this table about um you know, passing down things. So, you know, passing down, it could be land or rifles or you know, knives or you know, watches or um you know, I've I'm going to own my my grandpa's 1979 Ford Ranger truck. It's the the only truck I ever saw him driving. It's the first vehicle I ever drove. And I'm going to keep that thing up and running so that James and Elijah's first vehicle that they drive is going to be grandpa's truck. There's legacy and there's power in that. But, it's just like whenever we talked about uh I forget on which episode, but it was back back in a previous Romans episode, where it's like there are non-believers, people that are in Adam that do good stuff, >> Yeah. >> right? They do moral things, but they do it with enmity towards God. They're not doing it for the sake of God and to extend any type of a gospel legacy. >> They do it for their own legacy or their own prestige. >> And so, that's the thing is if you get too wrapped around the axle on passing down, you know, nice watches or or vehicles or or hunting grounds or whatever, it doesn't matter what the thing is, it's like to what purpose and to what end, right? If it's to give them a reminder because like, you know, if if I get a you know, nice watch someday that I hand down to my my kids or something like that, I want them to remember dad sitting studying the Bible wearing that watch. Them sitting in my lap and us talking about Jesus, talking about heaven, talking about hell and all that. And they remember looking down at at dad's watch. And then one day when they will look down because if I pass down a rifle, you don't use that every day. But if they're wearing dad's watch or if their grandson is wearing granddad's watch, every time they look down, they think about the gospel legacy that was left behind, the Bibles left behind. That's why I tell people all the time, my daily blade episodes and my Undaunted Life episodes, as long as there's still an internet when my kids are older, those are love letters to my boys. Right? So if I don't make it past the minute that I'm talking, that's a gospel legacy that I'm trying to give to my boys, giving them my notes on all these Bible things and so they get to experience that gospel legacy themselves. Um as we wind to a close, I do want to get into 38 and 39 as we we wrap our time here. So Howard, if you will go and read 38 39, we will wrap Romans 8. >> Okay. For I'm sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. >> So if we look at Romans 8 as a whole, again, when you pop into and out of scripture, you can lose the the thread, you can lose the narrative. Again, you know, they were reading this letter out loud. People were getting it all at once. But [clears throat] Romans 8 begins with there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. So we go from no condemnation to no separation. Right? That's the arc the narrative arc of Romans 8. No condemnation to no separation. And this is one of the strongest passages to uphold uh perseverance of the saints and you know, one saved always saved because there when when you know, when it says, you know, that neither or nothing can separate us and it lists all these things, that includes everything that you could think of that could separate you from the Father. But if you were ever in Christ, you are forever in Christ. You don't get imputed the righteousness of God and receive the Holy Spirit and then, you know, you you kind of go to college and you do your purple hair and your nose ring phase and all that and then you kind of lose all that and you kind of whatever. You might have a lot more noise and turbulence in your life, but if you're in Christ, you're in Christ. Like you are stamped, right? Because even people talk about the unforgivable sin, which is >> blaspheming >> blaspheming of the Holy Spirit and they're like, oh, well, you know, as a Christian, if you blaspheme the Holy Spirit, you lose it. It's like, no, no. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is rejecting the Holy Spirit. >> Yeah. >> we receive the Holy Spirit? At the same time we receive the imputation of righteousness whenever we accept the free gift of grace that was Christ's sacrifice on the cross. That's what that means. And so I think that that's an important distinction for a lot of people that are having that debate with themselves. Am I really saved? Am I truly saved? And here's the one thing. It's a pretty good hint if you're questioning your salvation that you got it. >> Mhm. >> Because you know who's not questioning their salvation? An atheist that doesn't give a crap. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. >> Well, the other thing to look at, too, is like I think you brought up a good point with Judas and the uh Last Supper. Um how many how many like and I hate and I hate to do this, but it just made me think. It's like how many times can we hear the word and know the word but never really have our eyes opened to the beauty of the gospel cuz like look at Judas. Because with Judas, like you said, Satan entered him. >> Right, which is not possible for the believer. >> For a believer. Like I mean, he walked with Christ. He listened to Christ. And so I think that's where it's just like when you read Romans and we look at this as the whole letter, like Paul lays out what is the flesh and Paul lays out what is righteous. And if if you're like if you if you can see that and you know that that you're saved within Christ Jesus, like there's nothing to fear. Like you cannot lose that. And so >> I uh I I told you guys in a previous episode that I I taught on First Peter to the high school kids, right? And it's like 1 Peter is all about He's talking to people. He's encouraging people that are suffering and he's, you know, he's talking about you know, we're kind of in this in between what has happened and what shall come kind of a phase. And it's not a really great way like, you know, I'm I'm I'm getting into the making PowerPoint slides for my presentation to talk to high school kids about suffering, right? I'm trying to like juice it up a little bit. >> Yay. >> Um but in in the first week um we hit 1 Peter. We're in chapter 1. And starting in verse 3 it says, "According to his great mercy he caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by God's power are being guarded." Like God himself guards your salvation. Like sitting with your salvation in hand and he's guarding it. >> Pretty secure, right? >> That's That's an unbelievable like like I don't deserve that. >> Mhm. >> Like the Bible's filled with things I don't deserve. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> I don't deserve my salvation to be guarded by my heavenly Father, but he does that. Like it is as secure as anything that's ever been. >> Yeah. I mean, because you can't you can't outsmart God. You know, you can't say >> right? >> outsin him, either. And like to go back to what I was saying, I didn't think I really got to finish that thought very well, was that like if we feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit and cuz Paul lays out what is righteous and what is unrighteous. And if within that unrighteousness we feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I mean, that just shows us right there that salvation is indeed within us. Like Christ we are being conformed to to to the son. And so and if, you know, and like we we have to remember that. Like even through our own sin, like you talked about, like somebody who may have given their life to Christ, got a nose ring, blue hair through college, like I was that guy. I wasn't the I wasn't a liberal, but I was like >> part? >> I wasn't [laughter] I never had blue hair. But I was a >> But we got some mental image >> I was a horrible human being, you know, and I could have told you I gave my life to Christ multiple times. And, you know, I would have told you like Christ would have done certain things that I know exactly right now as a believer Christ would never do, you know, >> because I wanted to fit in with culture, but it's like we have to remember we have to be patient with those people >> Yeah. >> and believe the best that there was a there was salvation taken in that moment, you know, but like that's why we can't judge salvation. But I can judge fruit. >> Well, and even Paul, you know, in frustration, it's like why do I do the things that I hate? Like what like it's it's that's us all the day long. >> Why do I roll down my window and try to fight gingers, you know, like [laughter] >> So, >> The internet still wants an answer to that. >> So, Helen's getting ready for middle school camp. She's she's helping teach and lead while she's down there. And so, she was preparing her lesson and everything for the week. And so, I was kind of helping her look over it. And some questions came up about that, you know, like hey, can you lose your salvation? And it was like I almost I had had a long day. I'd been traveling this week. And so, I came home and I'd said, hey, before you go, let's look over it. And so, it was one of those where I was like, man, do I go to bed or do I stay up and have this conversation and look over her stuff? And man, it led into some great conversations about that exact same thing. And she's like, man, I that fear of losing salvation, you know, there was a question on there. And she's like, man, I that kind of worried me at one point when I read that. And so, she's like, I want to make sure I can answer that. And so, we spent the next 20 minutes like walking through that and what that looks like and it's like if I would have [snorts] went to bed what did I what did I give up? >> Yeah, you would have gotten 20 minutes of sleep and given up a tremendous time of connection with Helen. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, I got to say this because I know this is a big pet peeve of yours and I was listening listening on the way to work this morning and this came up but Alister Begg was talking about um the music we sing, right? And does it resonate with scripture? And so he he started mentioning this and so I printed off the words to it and I wanted to just read a couple of the courses but it says though troubles sail and dangers affright, though friends should all fail and foes all all unite, yet one thing secures us whatever betide, the scripture assures us the Lord will provide. To stop uh to stop up our path and fills us with fears, we triumph by faith, he cannot take us take from us. Though oft he has tried, the heart cheer the heart cheering promise, the Lord will provide. And on the last verse it says, no strength of our own nor goodness we claim, our trust is all thrown on Jesus dear name. And this our strong tower, for safety we hide, the Lord is our power, the Lord will provide. And it's just like you just talk about man, to sing those words. >> Yeah. >> Um it's just those are the things we need to hide in our heart, right? Those are the things we need to be singing. >> And he he gave you Jesus and along with him he's going to graciously give you all things. >> Yeah. >> You know, that's that's awesome. >> And the thing is like with graciously give you all things, like it's really hard for me in the fact that I kind of grew up in like that prosperity gospel type thing and it's like what are the all things or the all things like >> in accordance with his >> Yeah, is [laughter] it is it prestige? Is it like you know, a new car? And so it's just like what what is accordance to his will? Like what Like that's the thing like that's where I I just dive deeper in and like I think that's what made me grow as like a husband and a father is like it's not just providing these material things. It's providing the spiritual. And that's where it's I got to remember that as as God is like yeah, God can provide me with some material things. But it's the spiritualness that I take like I don't want to take for granted because that's the best gift. >> He he loves you and he wants you to experience the love of your family and fellowship with friends and and all of that, but ultimately he wants you to be like Jesus. >> Yeah. >> So he's going to graciously and overwhelmingly give you all things to make you like Jesus. >> Yeah. And some of that sometimes can be suffering. >> Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Well, I I want to point this out because this you know, this really gets into 38 and 39 as we wrap up here. But John 10 27 through 29, John the entire chapter of John 10 is just incredible. This is Jesus talking. My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. And no one will snatch them out of my hand. My father who has given them to me is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand. So this is part of the Godhead referring to Daddy God like and how is the Holy Spirit, you know, playing a role in all this? Well, we've been talking about it for the last few weeks. And so maybe a good place to end our discussion of Romans 8 as we get in officially next week to the second half of Romans is for those of you out there that I have been questioning your salvation like I've had some dark nights of the soul where I felt like, you know, I couldn't pray words and it was just groaning and it was like, is this real? Is this really happening or whatever? Um, I think that it's really important to realize that, yeah, if you want to get into a bunch of debates about TULIP and Reformed Theology and all that, sure, we've done that, we will continue to do that. Perseverance of the saints, if you don't agree with that, you don't agree with John 10, okay? So, you're going to have to reckon with with John 10:27 through 29. But then also, for any people listening to this, because we know there are non-believers listening to this, there are atheists, there are agnostics, and we're so unbelievably thankful for all of y'all tuning in and listening to this content. There's a big difference between doing stuff that you feel is righteous, because you think it's going to gain you favor at some point and that God's going to weigh your good deeds against your bad deeds and if you have a little bit more good deeds and you get into heaven, guys, that's not Christianity, that's Islam, okay? That is a false religion. Because all of our good deeds are but filthy rags, right? Used menstrual cloths, that's how good our good deeds are right? But it's only if we pistuo, if we transfer our faith for our salvation from our good deeds and our morality and I ain't never killed nobody and I was born in Oklahoma and I listen to country music and transferring your faith into the finished work of Christ on the cross at Golgotha. That is the only hope that you have and that is what I would compel you to do. To those of you listening to this right now and you are feeling that call of God and for whatever reason, you can't explain it, you don't have the theological depth to, but you feel like when Jesus died on a cross on Golgotha and was resurrected on the third day that that entire rescue plan somehow counted for you. Place your faith in into Christ, start your sanctification journey right now. Fellas, anything else as we wrap up Romans 8? >> That was beautiful. >> Yeah. >> All right, guys, well, thank you so much for your attention and guys, thank you very much for the last few weeks of incredibly hard work, but we're going to go ahead and leave it there, guys, come back next week ready where we're going to get into Romans 9.
