So, let's go ahead and get into uh verse 19, 20, 21. >> I'll read it. >> And so, uh Ryan, if you would like to go and read it, go ahead and uh read 18 as well, but we're going to start the discussion with 19 through 21. >> 21. Yeah. All right. For I consider that suffering of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation, For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. So there's a lot of interesting things here. I mean obviously Howard what you said for the transition obviously these this whole reason where we can get we can derive our hope in the future glory. That's why the sufferings are they're at best temporal. They will not endure because we are in Christ. But I did think that was interesting when it talks about eager longing. We see that in verse 19. That appears seven times in the New Testament. Eager longing. And it always refers to the return of Christ. >> Okay? And just think about the times in your life where you like were longing eagerly for something. Like I remember very vividly as a kid, you know, we didn't have a pool. I didn't get to go to the pool very often. And so when I had a pool birthday party, like I just kept watching the entrance, like waiting for my friends to be there so that they could be at this pool party with me. And I just remember the eager anticipation of people showing up and getting to be part of the party. And it's just like how much more intense is this? Like all the way down to creation, right? For the creation was subjected to futility or frustration. Like creation is frustrated. That's that's what earthquakes and tornadoes and tsunamis like that's what that is. You know what I mean? >> So, I'm not the brightest guy in the world. And so, I was reading like the ESV portion of this and I you and I talked about this >> and I was like, man, this is like so philosophical. I'm not understanding it very well. So, I'm like, I have multiple translations. And so, I had a CSB translation, I had a NASBY translation, and I had an NLT translation. And I was reading the NLT, and it really brought it out to me. And I'm going to reread it in the NLT version. Uh, yeah. >> Starting 18. >> Yeah, I'm starting in 18. Sorry, I'm trying. I'm my throat is like you're on fire on fire. Scratchy. >> Yeah. Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will give us later. For all creation is waiting eagerly for the future day when God will reveal who his children really are. >> Against its will, everything on earth was subjected to God's curse. All creation anticipates the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom and from death and decay. So like >> he personifies creation. >> Yeah. It's like like creation knows what it was to be good cuz it was there when God >> created it. And now because of our sin, because of Adam and Eve, they're subjected to the curse. And like even the earth is groaning for the second coming. But the thing that really popped out to me on this one is God will reveal who his children really are. >> Mhm. >> Like that's something you got to really think about. And it kind of brought me back to Matthew. Um I have it pulled up here. I think it was Matthew uh Matthew 21. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my father who is in heaven, which we'll go over more in chapter 8. On that day many will say to me,"Lord, Lord, did you not did we not prophesy in your name and cast out demons in your name and do many mighty works in your name and then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, your works, you workers of lawlessness." And so, like, at that point when he comes back, you're going to see the children of God. Like the people who who have like held on to the promise, who have tried to walk in the faith will be will be redeemed through Christ. I thought it was pretty amazing when I thought about that. The future glory. >> Yeah. Um I had a note where it talks about, you know, creation waiting for the revealing of the sons of God. So it's like right now believers were truly God's children, but like our glorification is not yet visible, right? Like we're in this earthly broken bodies. And so there's a hidden aspect of our Christianity. And in John, in 1 John 3:2, he says, "Beloved, we are God's children now." and what we will be has not yet appeared. >> So he's kind of talking about it's like the world does not yet see what believers will be. >> Right? And so it's like one day that like our family likeness >> the you know uh the the likeness that is more in line with God's family will be revealed to creation like like we will be presented in a new way to creation and it's like eagerly anticipating that as well. I think it's like and it comes down to like first fruits. It comes down to the fruit. Like our fruit will be known. Like we talk about that now and like we know we know each other by our fruit and now our fruit's actually going to be like on display through the glory of God cuz like we're trying to as Christians we're not like we're never going to attain holiness. >> Like it's completely impossible. That's why Christ was sent. But when that time comes in the future glory like we're going to bask in that holiness. something that we've never been able to do on this earth. We'll never be able to create this utopia that some people want to create because we're not going to be the creators of that. >> God is. >> One of the notes I put on here, I said, "God's creation was designed to fulfill his purpose. It's outside of that purpose now, and it groans with expectation that one day it will be freed from that curse." Uh the similarity here is that uh when we are outside of Christ, we can't fulfill that purpose that he's called us to. Yeah. Right. And we need we need him to fulfill in us, you know, that ultimate purpose when he's called us to it. You know, it's that call of the gospel. Like we can't fulfill creation is in futility right now. We're in that same futility, right? That parallel >> even creation in us until he comes to fulfill that >> it's all, you know, worthless. >> Well, I think as well, so think about what I talked about last week about uh salvation being past, present, and future. So past is justification, present is sanctification, future is glorification. Like what's the most frustrating of the three? >> Sanctification. No one's frustrated when they get saved. It's like, oh my gosh, I can't believe it's right. I mean, all these new things, you get the Holy Spirit, all the things. >> Can how in the world can you be frustrated with glorification? So sanctification is just futility and frustration >> like the whole way, right? And it's going to be, you know, Paul lamenting like for the things that I do want to do, I don't do. Things I don't want to do. I do those things. And it's just like how does this keep freaking happening? And it's just like that is what the sanctification process I is happen like that's what's happening to us. But ultimately >> the the entire section really that we're going to be getting into in the next couple weeks 18 through30 it is literally freedom from frustration. >> That's what's being described here. It's freedom from discouragement because if you if you look at your sanctification journey through the correct lens, right? Going back to the previous section, it's like, oh, we're expected to have suffering. that's that's why that's why that thing is happening. That's why I'm getting castigated at work or that's why I'm I'm having issues connecting with people or whatever the thing is. You know, you go back to verses 17 and 18. It's like, no, that's expected. So, it's it's just part for the course. That doesn't mean it's awesome. Doesn't mean you're going to enjoy it, but it's part for the course. So, why be frustrated with it? I I just had a thought like I'm listening to what you're saying and and like do you think like when when God renews creation, right? Like in us it's things that we're going to be we're going to be rescued and like heaven is not going to have any death. It's not going to have any mourning. It's not going to have any pain. So when the earth is restored like is it is it not going to rain anymore? But there's >> I mean does it go back to But I mean like pre flood >> didn't rain pre >> you know. So is it like is it going back to where there's like >> like it's like like what I'm amazed at the earth when when I go places, right? Like you can't help but like go to Colorado, stand on a beach somewhere and look at the vastness of the ocean and I'm amazed at it. I I can't imagine >> like what I'm looking at is the worst version of the earth that I'm ever going to see. And that blows my mind. like what what does >> the beauty that it's in now and what it would be, right? >> Like what happens when there's no decay and no thorns and no and no tornadoes and twisters and all that kind of stuff? Those are the same thing. I live in Oklahoma. Um like like is that what is that what we're talking about? Like creation longs to get back to what it was. >> Well, because you got to think and this is not an Avatar argument or something like that like but it's just like creation understands what it was, >> right? Like there there's some sort of memory like trees are alive like there's the soil's alive like everything's alive. >> There's some sort of collective memory that we can't explain as humanity but also as creation of what was of what Eden was. >> So you would assume that the new heavens and the new earth are going to be as good if not better as things were in Eden. >> Yeah. >> And so like you got to think if you knew how good it was because none of us experienced Eden, right? But if you knew how good Eden was like and you had a memory of that, you would always long for it because it was literal perfection. Everything in the right order and we've just been, you know, jacked up from there. >> Yeah. >> Does that make sense? >> Do you think we long for it enough, >> you know, >> to be in that, right? >> I think our flesh fights that. >> Oh, hun. Like, does our focus go so much to the here and now? because there's great things in this life, right? You were talking about our kids, our family, the things we work hard for. We enjoy those. But do we truly long for that? >> I I think that's a really good question because like I am not a big guy on esquetology. Like esquetology doesn't interest me at all. >> But like many people who it does interest, they're like, "Don't do you really care about future glory?" You know, do you really care about what what's supposed to come? And they make a very valid point. So, it makes me think, do I do I really focus on that as well as I as much as I should or, >> you know, like me, I don't know. I'm just like, >> whatever happens happens, you know? So, when I feel like I feel like Ryan means it the last couple of weeks he's been like the overnight radio DJ. He's been down here. He's been just kind of like chill talking. He's normally like up and ready to go. I thought that Do we need to hit the smelling salts again? >> Oh, man. I just because you're just kind of relax. You're very relaxed. >> I'm channeling my channeler. Hey, you know what? We're actually that we don't normally record at night. We're normally recording in the middle of the afternoon. I think that might be why we're getting >> he's getting into his radio. >> I stayed up I stayed up a little late last night, too. >> Whose fault was that? >> He's got his Delila going. >> I was hanging out I was hanging out with my good buddy >> and uh we had a good time. >> I'm going to tell you there. He's not your buddy if he kept you out late before such an important night as this. Like who who would dare to do something like that? I >> mean this this ginger demon. >> That's got to be a category of demon. You guarantee like that's the thing. This Celtic like just like mess of a h of a demon just walking around not hanging out in the sun. >> But it it was we had a lot of fun last night. We were smoking cigars and watching some UFC fight and Kyle telling me I'm fat. So >> you you said you was fat and I didn't interrupt you. Uh so it's it's a little bit different. >> But yeah. No, I mean I can see like I don't know. I've been you're talking about we're talking about sanctification and and and what like the annoyance not the annoyance of being sanctified but like the frustration >> of being sanctified and like lately I just God's just been on my heart about my own sanctification. Um >> we all joke about my driving in here, you know, like but like no lie, it was like I don't know it was like a couple days ago I was watching like it was lunchtime and I was like you know I'm going to watch something. I'm just kind of bored on my mind. I just want to watch something. So, I was watching something on Road Raiders and I was watching it and I was telling my wife about it. I was like, uh, I was like, man, I was watching a show on Road Raiders. She's like, why? So, you know, so you can look at them and be like, I'm not that bad. And I was like, >> like part of me is like, no, I didn't really think about it that way, but it would have been nice, but like I was like, no, it was the fact that the things that frustrated them frustrates me >> and I don't want to see myself get to that level. And so, uh, Dean, do you know about the situation that happened in the district? Uh, are you familiar with with this story? I think it's worth, uh, retelling because again, part of your sanctification journey. I'm just here to help you along with your >> I love you bringing up the sanctific. Um, so we're we're going uh we're going to a group dinner and uh there's, you know, three or four couples showing up and so I'm on Broadway extension headed south, you know, minding my own business. I'm about 5 miles an hour over the speed limit and then some guy in a Ram freaking Ram truck decides to pass and so it goes past me. I It's Ryan. Now I'm driving a vehicle that is very recognizable. I'm not going to tell everyone what what I drive, but it's a recognizable vehicle. Yeah. Yeah. It's Maza Miata. I love with going with the sun down, but only if it's cloudy. And so, uh, so he goes blowing past me. Doesn't see me. And so I'm like right behind him, figuring at some point he's going to, oh, you know, give me the whole wave. And so I'm literally from Broadway extension to the PO behind Ryan the whole way. I exit with him. I'm following around. His situational awareness is down. What if I were a terrorist? What if I were trying to kidnap him? He had no no clue he was being followed. And so, you know, you get down to the PO and it's either like, you know, small little like hor horizontal parking spaces and then there's like the street parking and different things like that. >> And so, he's driving that big obnoxious Ram truck. And he sees a spot and he goes to turn into it, but it was one of those spots where it's kind of behind you, so you kind of have to, you know, you have to pull, you know, do it and then kind of pull back out. >> And so, I'm still behind him at this point. And so, as a joke, I decide to just lay on the horn. And then immediately he looks out the window like he's ready for Mortal Kombat. Like he's just ready to go. Starts cussing up a storm. We could wait. We confirmed from the tape. Let's go to the evidence. He started. He was like, "Mother, you know, bad word, right? Bad word. Insert here. Insert there." He was ready for war. He was ready for war in the PO district. We're We're going to go eat some. I don't even know where we ate, but like he was ready to go to town because somebody was >> Were you genuinely like furious in that moment? >> I mean, he kept honking and I rolled down my window to like really just be like "Dude >> no, no, no, no, no, no, no. He's trying to soften it." There was no kept honking. >> He heard a honk and knew it was because he was parking like a jerk. He turned around. It wasn't a keep honking thing. It was an immediate honk, immediate reaction. Sanctify yourself. And I did not cuss. >> But we did we did have this debate >> on one podcast and we had to do a phone call to >> to my wife. >> Yeah. >> And she confirmed and she confirmed not there was no cuss. >> Yeah. He just let her >> makes you feel better. I cussed yesterday >> and Kyle worked on his forgivingness. And >> you want me to tell that story >> about you cussing yesterday? >> Yeah. >> I mean if you want to. She was like, "What happened?" And I was like, "I burned my foot." I was like, "I'm not proud of myself." Said a cuss word. She was like she was like just kind of like just shook her head and just like >> I love you honey still. >> Yeah. I was like I was like I had to tell the truth, you know, but like >> I don't know. I just I felt really convicted by it. >> Now we know how the earth feels because it's groaning. >> Literally groaning some sin to the entire world. >> I got some more sin. You guys want to keep going? >> No, you you've done enough, right? Your road rage by itself is enough. Any any sin that needs to be confessed on the internet? >> No road rage. Okay. Well, we can just kind of keep this train moving a little bit. As long as it's not a train that has a whoop whoop cuz then Ryan may drive by and flip him the bird because he thinks it's because of him. What do you mean you don't do it? Like they had this horrible habit of flipping people off in traffic. And every time they would do this, I'm like, "Hey, you can't do that." Like you you don't know who's in the other car. You don't know what kind of day they're having. You don't know if they intend to run you off the road or do anything like that. And so, hilariously enough, they finally kind of got the point. So, instead of flipping people off, they give them a thumbs down, which I think is way more hilarious and almost worse. Like, if you, you know, you mess mess with somebody in traffic all this, it's like, "Yeah, bad. You're a bad driver. I disapprove of this. It's just like and it's kind of like diffusing because like what you're going to get mad at a thumbs down. So I think that's a pretty good uh you know substitution. >> I I sometimes give a thumbs up to the people that flip me off. Have you ever done that? Is that road rage? >> I just blow kisses. I'm like >> wow. >> Yeah. >> You didn't blow me any kisses? >> No. >> Did not blow me. >> I turned around. I was going to but then I saw it was you so I stopped. >> Yeah. And pretty soon by the next time he tells the story he'll be like, "No, I was turning around to see who I needed to evangelize." Right. Right. And that's where where my mind was exactly in that moment. Uh hey, let's keep uh let's keep this section going because um really the this entire section here 18 through30 talking about future glory. I want to get into verses 22 and 23. So we'll take a volunteer as tribute. So 22 and 23. >> For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves who have the first fruits of the spirit grown inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. So, a thing that was like kind of mind-blowing uh for me as I was reading through this, it's like, okay, the whole of creation has been groaning together, and I don't know how what it's like for you guys, but I just defaulted to the earth >> when whenever anytime I would hear about, oh, you know, the earth is growing, right? The rocks are crying out, blah blah. It's like it's not what it says. >> Yeah. >> Whole the whole of creation. So the redemption that's coming is a cosmic redemption. >> So any problems in the solar system, in the cosmos, there's probably not going to be black holes in the new heavens in the new earth, like all that kind of stuff. >> Yeah. >> It's all redeemed. And like just trying to wrap my pea brain around like the sheer enormity of what redemption is going to look like. And again, if all creation is groaning, it's not just the oceans, it's not just the rocks, it's not just the grass, it's the stars. Like, it's it's gravity. Like, it's everything that's part of creation. >> It's like everything comes together. >> Yeah. >> It's it's like I don't know how the spirit groans for us. Did I Did I get too far ahead on that? >> No. >> No. Like the spirit groans for us. It's like there's like the spirit being in us is like a little bit of God. It is God in us. It's God in us. And it's like we'll never attain holiness, but there's that holiness that's in us that groans for what true holiness is. And like even when we're not like how you said it, Howard, like do we ever think about the future glory? Do we ever >> like really like grown for it? Like even when we're not growing groaning for it, like we don't feel like we're growing for it, the spirit within us is groaning for it. >> Yeah. He's groaning for us. >> He's growing for grown groaning for us. And so it's like like that's the beauty of it is that again it's not what we do, it's what he does. >> Well, and I I I want to make sure that people understand that like our groaning is not an indication of unbelief. It's a reality of living in the broken world. >> 100%. >> And it's just because that is our only response to living how we weren't designed to be. Right. Um so so I think some people you know personally like for me like I think of this as like what is the groaning where it talks about where he says uh even we ourselves groan within ourselves waiting for adoption the redemption of our body. So you know I think a lot of Christians or a lot of people in general think like when you die like you're going to leave your body and we're going to go someplace. Well like our bodies will be redeemed and bodies will be raised from the dead. And so our our bodies um are have a role to play in uh our future glory. But I think like my current groaning is it like is it like the stress that I feel from trying to live in this world? Like is that is that a way that my body groans and I won't have that? So let me go to the NLT because that's what helped me with this is that even we Christians although we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory also grown to be released from pain and suffering. >> We too wait anxiously for the day when God will give us full rights as his children including the new bodies he has promised us. So like our groaning is like wanting to be released from the pain and suffering. Like the our our groaning is because like what what do we always hear most of the time? Why would a why would a a just God or a loving God allow this? Like >> I feel like that's a groan. It's like, oh, why would a just God or a loving God allow this person to die or allow this natural disaster to happen? We sin. >> Sin allowed that all to happen. But we still grown. We grown for that future glory of when this is not going to be that anymore. It's going to be no death, no no sin. >> And like that's what our bodies are groaning for. And if even if we can't do the groaning, the spirit does the groaning for us. >> I had another verse. I think it's pretty similar to what you're you had, but it's second Corinthians 5 uh verses 2. It says, "Meanwhile, we groan longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling. Because when we are clothed, we will be found, we will not be found naked. For while we were in his tent, we groan and are burdened because we do not wish to be unclothed, but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling. >> So that so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. Now that the one who has fashioned us for the very purpose is God. Fashioned us for the very purpose is God. Who has given us the spirit as a deposit guaranteeing us what is to come. I just thought that was beautiful. like we're we're just desiring to be clothed in him. And this just >> this daily grind of futility to me just seems like it's it can it can be a grind and you're just like we so much like we were talking about earlier, Paul wants to but we get pulled back. And so I mean just that imagery of putting him on, you know, we've been talking about being clothed in righteousness and all the armor at at uh at church recently. And so it's just like putting putting that newness on. So >> well guaranteeing what is to come. Go back to verse 23 of Romans 8. And not only the creation, but we ourselves who have the first fruits of the spirit. The first fruits. Okay. So So the first fruits implies that the harvest has yet to come. Y >> right where we're seeing a little bit of it. >> So it's like uh one of the one of the commentaries put out by dial Theological Seminary on this verse said, you know, the Holy Spirit is a down payment for our future inheritance. >> Yep. And it's like, wait a minute. Like the helper that Jesus had to leave to send down here because Jesus could only be at one place at one time, but then the helper sent that can be at all places at all times. That's just the down payment. >> Like like that's So when people talk about the already but not yet. >> Yeah. >> It's like that's that's part of this entire thing as well. And that's incredibly powerful. >> I mean like Yeah. That's the great thing about the Holy Spirit. It's like I like to go back and think of it. It's a glimpse of God's holiness like within us. you know, and it's the down payment. So, we we have a glimpse of what it looks like, but we don't have the full the full-on look of holiness just yet. >> And I know we'll get into it. >> That's our air >> in future episodes talking about the spirit. And there's some just beautiful verses about it, but I mean, one of the commentaries I was reading on this, it says, "Having the first fruits of the spirit gives us hope." You know, just like a tree with its first piece of fruit, we see a change in ourselves and our desire to be fully redeemed. groaning. We wait uh as we wait. Does our sin make us grown waiting to change? So, I thought that was interesting. I mean, we see that first fruit on the tree and it's like, "Oh man, what's to come?" And so, we see that little change of sanctification in us. Yeah. >> Right. And it's like, "Oh, I'm making progress." Right. Like, >> and it keeps us going. It keeps us, >> you know, striving. >> Yeah. He's like he's making he's making a work in us, you know, and it's just like I think you nailed the nailed it on the head with the sanctification part. I mean, that's what the future is. It's like hey >> I can see what future sanctification looks like. >> What can I strive for? You know, and then God's like, this is how I'm going to work within you. And which we get further in in chapter 8 about that. >> And I think and I I don't want to jump too far ahead, but it's that it's like we aren't going to do it on our own, right? And I think that's what I've just learned so much. And it's like I don't think we as Christians, we think about Jesus a lot. We think about God, but I don't know if we fully tap into the spirit, right? I think it's and there's, you know, depending on what church you go to and and what your background of the spirit is, but it's just like it's it's a the third part of the trinity that I don't think we >> study enough understand. No, I grew up where I mean the Holy Spirit was like the weird uncle that that always messed up Christmas, you know, literally I so I grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and we went to First Baptist Church, Easter and Christmas. So I think it was some they were related somehow. I think it was somebody who stayed in our church or went to our church. I think it was maybe their son, like their adult son. >> Mhm. It was it was the same dude like I'm talking year after year Easter and Christmas and the boys, you know, firmly planted in their, you know, permanent seats in the balconies cuz you have signed seats at church, right? >> My spot. It's the only reasonable place to do it. >> And he was he was like right directly below us. But I remember the very first time he did this uh you know and the pastor said something and out from the crowd you hear, "Amen. Yeah. Well, that's against the rules. >> Yeah. And it was just like I mean heads were like turning like what is going on? And it was this like uh you know I mean you know that's what I attested or kind of a sign to like this is you know he's probably one of those in the spirit guys you know just like loose in church. Calm yourself down Jack. But it's like it's like I didn't grow up listening to like hey the or being taught like hey they all have these roles that they play like they like like the spirit didn't die for you. Jesus did. Jesus did that. Right. >> Like and the spirit has a role >> that we don't tap into. Like I feel like it's like this ghosty spooky thing but it's like man like >> like do you like how did you guys grow up? Did you guys grow up with a relationship with the Holy Spirit? >> No. I was pagan. Let's talk to the people. I grew up Christian uh in Christian households here. >> Oh, >> I to be honest, I never even heard of Holy Spirit like before I became started going to church on my own. Like I say country music, theology, but I heard of the Holy Ghost. Absolutely no concept of how any of that connected or trinity or anything like that. So for you two, I wonder what that what what it was actually like. >> You grew up church of Christ. I mean I grew up I mean Christian church of Christ but I mean I always grew up that you know when you were baptized the Holy Spirit came into you and you know it's like your new conscience is the Holy Spirit and it works in you but you know beyond that it's like it's going to convict you when you when you do something wrong it's going to convict you that you need to change and >> you know sanctification >> it's the sanctification process and that was >> you know always the part for me that I felt the the Holy Spirit played in my life. So, I mean, but >> are you still do you still believe it happens at baptism? >> Uh, right now I believe it's when when you accept him and >> right >> invite him into your life. So, >> just I wanted to preempt the fight before Ryan jumped on it. So, uh >> No, it only happens when you're baptized Ryan. >> Yeah. If you don't get to the Church of Christ water, it doesn't count, right? >> I was baptized Church of Christ just to make sure. >> Hey, that was my first baptism. >> I almost That was my second baptism. Oh. that hey, why not get an insurance policy? Let's just cover all possibilities. >> Yeah. I was just like, let your church Christ do it. >> So, no. Um, >> I grew up Oh, man. I grew up watching people get slain in the spirit. >> Oh. >> Like, yeah. >> Like you you're stepping over people after church. They're like slain in the spirit. Um, a lot of uh speaking in tonesues. Uh, just random speaking in tonesues. Nobody's interpreting. >> Just in like in the middle of service. >> Oh yeah. I mean in the middle of worship people just started speaking in tong. >> Did anyone ever try to interpret live? >> I can't remember. >> Okay. >> But I'm going to assume no, but that's an assumption that I'm a kid when all this is on. How do how are you feeling? Are is it normal? Is it normalized to you? Is it is it like how do you feel? >> I thought it was weird. >> Okay. >> Like they tried to teach me to speak in tongues as a kid and I was like, "Are you going to teach me a gift?" >> You know, right. >> How old were you when that went down? You've told that story a bunch. >> Six or seven. >> Oh, I didn't realize it was that early. Yeah. >> I thought for whatever we moved No, no, I was out of that. Um, by the time I was like a teenager, we were going to we still went to like Assemblies of God churches, but they're not as like they weren't as like it wasn't as prevalent as it was in like kind of this church environment that I grew up in. I would say it was almost like a Pentecostal/carismatic type church. Um, but like it's always something like I've always like I don't know like I've never I've never felt comfortable with it. And when it comes to speaking in tongues, like I really feel that if it if it's being done, it's in a different language and somebody's interpreting what you're saying or you're speaking in a language and somebody's understanding the gospel from what you're what you're speaking. Uh I've went back in Corinthians, I think 14, and looked at this. the groaning in the spirit, which we'll talk about here in the next two verses, um, at the first gave me my only like evidence for tongues outside of apostolic miracles. Um, but honestly, like I don't feel like that groaning in the spirit is is like speaking in tongues, though I I felt that one time. There was one time I was like, you know me, I was telling you guys I was a hypochondric. I literally thought I was dying of something and I was just like in this anxious stage and could not sleep and I was just praying to God for like something just like just some relief and there wasn't any words that I could say and I think that's like the only time I would say like I really like groaned in the spirit >> like and like I I I think I took it as speaking in tongues >> and and I but like it never happened again you know like usually like in my mind when I'm like groaning in the spirit or I don't have the words to say like I'm going over God's attributes in my head as I'm trying to find that that relief that only only Christ can give while praying to God because I'm realizing who he is as God and and and what he's capable of and what I'm not capable of. So, um I grew up in a very very very spiritual household where I think the Holy Spirit was kind of abused >> um to control people. Um, I've talked about a family member in here that still kind of was going through that and where somebody will act like they're spiritually above them and say, "I see a spirit of infirmary over your life because you're not doing this and that's why these things are happening." Or, um, I see sin in you. You need to tell me what that is. Like, I have this more spiritual outlook in life. >> Wait, so when someone came up and said, "Hey, I think you have a spirit of infirmity." Like, so this was like an elder in the church. >> This was the pastor of the church. >> Okay. So the pastor of the church came to this family member and was like like and they had some sickness going through their house and he's like, "Yeah, I see a spirit of infirmary over your over your household and it's because you're not >> infirmity. People on the internet are going to get mad at you." >> Infirity. Infirmary is like where you send people once if they get sick in prison. >> Yeah. In the morning. >> That's what I'm thinking of. I'm like I don't even know like what's the spirit of infirmity or firm? I don't know. >> But yeah, that's what the person that's what they would likely call it. So if they So would it be fair to say that these people would like categorize if people were getting sick in your household as like this is a punishment or like a generational >> like a punishment because you're not generational curses and you know like you know you're not giving and so this is what's happening or or sometimes like in that word of faith type of movement is like you're not having enough faith and that's why you're not getting healed. Um, so the other thing was too, and this family member was telling me too, uh, the the pastor's wife would have a woman's event and would get information on people within the uh, congregation and then she would like try to sound prophetic like, I know somebody in here is dealing with this, this, and this, and this. It's like kind of like that guy from uh, from uh, uh, Bethl who was like going on people's Facebooks and getting like information and then trying to act like he was prophetic. It's like the oldest trick in the book. Those guys are going to expose left and right. >> It's like I can hear a bunch of information on people around me. It's called gossip. And then I can use that to control my congregation. And so that's where I'm just like the Holy Spirit like if if the Holy Spirit is speaking through somebody, then it it's going to come to pass. And if it comes to pass, >> great. If it doesn't, that person wasn't speaking for God. And so, I don't know. I just like I I look at the Holy Spirit as the way you look at the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is here to sanctify me. >> Well, I want to get Oh, go ahead. Go ahead. >> No, I was just going to say I think that goes back to what we talked about last week. It's where if we aren't rooted in scripture, right? And if we aren't in it, studying it, and truly testing that against that, then again, we're going to be, >> you know, tossed by the waves of every feeling and emotion and every cultural event that says, "Hey, we need to go in this way and do these things." And it's just like I think we have two divergent where we don't talk about it enough and when we just overplay it y >> and so it's just like one of those things it's taboo that we don't talk about it because we don't understand it enough in our churches. >> Yeah. Just real quick because I think you you kind of alluded to it but because next week we'll get into verse 26 and beyond where we get into the groanings more but go ahead and read 24 and 25 and uh do do the NLT if you don't mind. >> Okay. 24 and 25. >> Yeah. Of Romans 8. Now that we are saved, we eagerly look forward to it. This freedom for if you already have something you don't need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something, we don't have yet, we must wait patiently and confidently. >> So I wanted to read this cuz I I plugged into the the logos Bible stuff software AI like, you know, why did Jesus, you know, leave in order for the Holy Spirit to come. So I I want to read this just explanation because this will set us up through the end of this discussion and then set us up for next week. The most fundamental explanation concerns the nature of Christ's incarnate presence. During his earthly ministry, Jesus existed in bodily form limited by space and time. Whereas the spirit could operate without such physical constraints and be present everywhere simultaneously. The spirit's presence would not be physically limited as Jesus's was, but would dwell within each believer and accompany them whatever they wherever they traveled. This represented a dramatic expansion of divine availability, moving from one person in one location to an omnipresent reality. Beyond this practical consideration, Jesus's departure through crucifixion carried redemptive power that enabled a new presence of God's spirit in creation. God's plan required the son's return to heaven and the spirit's descent to the earth. The cross was essential to inaugurate the new age of salvation, and only after this central event could the spirit come. The Spirit's coming thus represented not merely a change in divine strategy, but the fulfillment of salvation history itself. I love that line. I'll read it again. The Spirit's coming thus represented not merely a change in divine strategy, but the fulfillment of salvation history itself. The Spirit would teach believers and remind them of Jesus's words. John 14:26. While bearing witness about Jesus, John 15:26. The Spirit would empower believers to be witnesses to the ends of the earth. Acts 18. In this sense, Jesus's departure paradoxically enabled a more effective continuation of his mission through the universal presence and power of the spirit working through his followers. >> And just think about that makes me think about the apostles after they saw the risen Christ, after they ran from him, denied him, all the things, and then they got to spend what, 40 days with Jesus after uh his his uh before his ascension, after his resurrection. >> And you had to think, they were like, "Dude, we lost you. We just got you back. >> You c you can't leave. We But he had to. It was like basically what was it like I'm sending you a helper, a pariclete or paracletus or something like that to where it's like no I'm I'm going to send you something that's better. Like you can only have me in this like incarnate, you know, in the meat in the flesh state, >> but now you're going to have the presence of the father that's going to be indwelling you. I mean, it had to just be I mean, just think of what Pentecost had to have been like. >> The Holy Spirit felt like what in the world like literally no one had ever experienced that before. >> Yeah. I mean, I I just you look at the disciples before and the disciples after and it's just like these are two different groups. >> Yeah. >> Right. Just the depth of understanding, the way they speak. I mean, >> if you guys have talked about it on the podcast, it's just like how how they wrote before and how they wrote after. And just, you know, >> I think you kind of see the the apostles move from what their thoughts and their will is to actually knowing God's will >> and feeling God's will because when the spirit dwells within us, >> we that sanctification shows us God's will. And we'll talk about that more next week. But I mean, there's there's times in my life where my will was trying to trump God's will and God turned that way upside down. Well, we talked in a previous in the last episode, I think, where we were where I I talked about how my wife and I had a conversation about my wanting to just like make this moment with my family kind of last forever because it's what I know and I cling to it. I I can see the disciples being that exact same position, right? Mh. >> Like we don't want to like I know heaven's going to be amazing, but it it doesn't mean that I like I just I just please have it be more amazing than what I what God has given me on this earth with my family, right? And and I think the disciples were in that place, right? >> Where they they can't even imagine. But man, the help that's like you you say helper like that's like that that is like really underelling the whole >> you know what I mean? It's like >> he's the third part of the trinity right now. >> It's like hey I'm going to send you this helper but they had no idea but like like like you're right and and we talked about this in church on a Wednesday night with a bunch of senior guys and I said would you rather have Jesus be a part of this group and come on Wednesday nights or would you rather have the Holy Spirit? And what do you think they all said? >> Jesus. Jesus. >> They all said they'd rather have Jesus come every Wednesday night. And I was like, y'all Jesus. >> I think that's a trick question though. >> Well, you know, you got to keep people on. But but I mean, >> but we don't understand without the spirit. >> But the point is, but the point is is would you rather have the spirit every day? Like when you leave here, the spirit is with you. and when you go to sleep and when you wake up and the spirit is teaching you things and convicting you of things and and you're coming on Wednesday nights with six days worth of of life with the spirit rather than coming in on and having an hour with Jesus. >> There's a passage that talks about that where Jesus says, "I'll send a helper and and he will make it known to you." And I wish I could find it, but it it was it was like Jesus was telling the disciples this, like without the spirit, you won't understand. Why I think that's a trick question is because the Trinity because they're all one like >> Yeah. >> having Jesus with me in flesh for one hour is is it's it's it's a trick question because I can have Jesus with me all day all day long with the Holy Spirit. >> Why is that not ask a pastor question? Come on. Certainly could be. >> How could you make it either or not when they're one? >> Because it's a pretend scenario. >> You guys are pretend scenarios. >> I'm pretending. That is a great pretend scenario. That's one of the best things possible is a alternative universe on a different time time zone, time stamp, time continuum. >> That's the best way to think about it. >> Let's just forget the trinity ever exists. >> Yeah. So, I want to I want to actually uh save the discussion about kind of the groaning and things that we get into verse 26.
