It is the solemn charge of Undaunted Life to equip men for the great contest against darkness, furnishing them with such content as shall forge within them a resilience of spirit, mind, and body alike. At the forging table, ye shall find assembled a fellowship of ordinary men. Devoted to the forging of spiritual resilience through diligent search of God's holy word. To every man who would hear it, we extend with gladness this open summons. Come and join thyself to this worthy endeavor. Thou Russ, thou Zach, thou Ryan. >> Here, here, here, here, >> here, here, ye, happy to sit before thy peoples here. Well, it it was going well and then I don't know what that was. Did you have a stroke just then? >> Dude, I have had like an outof body experience I feel like on every episode. >> Yeah. >> I mean, sometimes we just have to kind of, you know, feel, you know, I almost like the way that our founding fathers felt when they were writing and referring to like Deuteronomy, which I think was referred to more by any of the founding fathers in those initial documents. And really, you know, that was the the fire, the Old Testament was the fire behind a lot of the Federalist papers. And it's just like I feel like, you know, that's just the style, the way that we should approach. >> I feel like >> if we look back at these past couple of episodes, like the first one, I just felt like a redneck whose parents left him out in the middle of nowhere and he had to find his journey back >> to like what is good. >> The other guy, I just found like I just felt like a prince of darkness, >> but like needing to find some light in that. And then on the last one, I just felt like I was the love child of Dwight Shroo. And who's the other guy? >> Chit. >> Chit. >> That's oddly specific. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so I don't know. Now I just feel feel regal, you know? I feel like feel like I'm just finding that old timey spirit that I just need to push away >> and come back. >> Are we done? >> Are we done? >> No. to myself. >> Yeah, I don't like this version as as well. >> I don't feel like been taken seriously, guys. >> Oh my man. >> I think that that was >> that one was the one to be taken serious. >> You guys want me to put it back on? >> Yes. >> I mean, we can take a vote. We got a yes. >> I I was ready to really take what you were saying seriously. I mean, >> uh that's a yes, a yes, and a yes. I think the yeses have it. And so, for the people not watching this, you are uh you're missing out. I think we've seen the many faces of Ryan Horn over this last month's worth of episodes or so. But to get into the seriousness uh of what we're doing >> Romans 8, >> I mean, we're going to be spending quite a bit of time in Romans 8. There is a lot I mean, this might be the most quoted different passages of Romans 8 or some of the most quoted passages uh that we see certainly in this letter, if not of all of Pauline's letters in the entire New Testament. Um, but when we get to 81, we ended last week's episode by reading 8:1. Um, and Romans 8:1. Um, Russ, you read it last week. Go ahead and read that again. And then I want to talk about it real quick. Fine, >> too. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. >> It's so pregnant with meeting meaning. And I and you know I say that without any I wasn't meaning to say that to say this but every time that I do my abortion presentation which started in our Sunday school class um and now I've taken it to other churches and spoken. This is exactly where I start. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Because I'm going to go into a very important but a very controversial and difficult topic to discuss. I'm going to talk about abortion and debunk some of the ideas as to what's happening, give some facts about what is occurring in the womb, and then I take the top 18 pro-abortion arguments, and I provide the brethren with ways to fight back against those arguments. You know, my body, my choice, um, you only care about the the baby before it's born. Um, you know, all the different things you'll see put on signs and screamed uh during protests and things like that. But I'm so aware of my audience because that's one of the first things you're taught if you get taught how to do presentations or u persuasive uh presentations is you have to know your audience, right? You could have the perfect presentation, but if it's delivered to the wrong audience, it's it's an F. It's an F minus, right? And every time I I do this, I know for a fact that there are women in the crowd that have had an abortion >> for sure. Statistically speaking, there's almost no way that that cannot be true, right? I also know there are men that have participated in abortions, right? Either through a pressure campaign against the girl that they impregnated, whether it be their their girlfriend or just some, you know, one night stand hookup or sometimes even their their spouses. I know there are grandparents in that room that have paid for a problem to go away, right? Maybe they didn't want to have to explain to the guys in the office or down at the, you know, the golf shop or something like that, hey, that their 15-year-old daughter maybe isn't as innocent as they all thought. They didn't want the weird looks at church. They didn't want the the questions or the judgment or the anything like that. And so instead, which is very, very rampant in this community that we live in in Edund, incredibly high rates of abortion for teenagers, which is shocking, right? Whenever you live in Edund or go through Edund, it seems like Camelot. There's a lot of depravity behind those brand new SUVs, imperfectly manicured lawns, and those McMansions. Like, it's it it's a depraved thing. But I always start here because if your condemnation is so strong and loud while I'm doing this presentation, you will not hear any of the things that you need to hear. You will not be able to learn the arguments or the questions you need in order to push back against the darkness and the skirts that is abortion. And it all kind of goes back to what Job has said is look, you are not your abortion. You're not your affair. You're not your divorce. You're not your crime. You're not your theft. You're not your whatever. You cannot out sin the grace of God. And so that's why I think that, you know, whoever decided to put these into chapters and verses that why they started out a chapter, you know, you know, a little over halfway. This is just over the, you know, halfway point or beginning to the halfway point, just before the halfway point of of this letter from Paul because I think this one verse we have whether or not we're condemned by our sins and we have whether or not we are in Adam or in Christ. Because if we aren't in Adam and that's where we remain, we remain condemned. Mhm. >> But if we are in Christ, which he has built and built and built this argument to get to this point, then there is no condemnation. Not that we have the option to not be condemned, but that condemnation is not present. It is a foregone conclusion because we have been imputed with the righteousness of God through the finished work of Christ on the cross. So I think it is an incredibly important uh place to start. And you know, one verse requires a lot of reverence on our part. So let's let's start our discussion there. I love I I think you really have to like to understand 81. I just want to go back and uh hit a little bit right before it and says um for I delight in the law of God in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging worry against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law the sin of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man am I, who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Like the idea that he followed all this up, this like big deal that he made about being like leveling with them about the idea that there is still um that there is still a a flesh component to this. But then to be but to say but those that are in Christ Jesus, it's not it's not that we that this that we now have all this uh superpower. It is that the person that had the power already played the game and paid it for us. Like there we're just we're not even in the same field anymore. We're not playing by those rules anymore. You are no longer in this category. Uh I love it. I think one thing that I look at is the wages of sin is death and through sin we're we're damned. >> Mhm. >> And Sproul brought this up in something I was reading where it was basically condemnation. The Latin word for it and I'm going to butcher this is like damnatious or I don't but it's basically damnation. So because of our sin we're damned. We're damned to hell, you know, like there's nothing that we can do. But through Christ, we're no longer damned, >> right? >> We're we we're we're no longer condemned. We have we have the free gift of grace. We have the imputed righteousness of Christ. So we can stand before a holy God and our sin no longer defines us. I think the uh Greek here says katakurma which was says that that word was a legal verdict not just guilt but the executed penalty. So like it's it's being guilty and you've been given the penalty and the damnation is like the idea that like all that combined with the execution of the penalty that is condemnation. It is like full circle the whole basket like in your analogy you know last week talking about like that would have been the penalty and the combination of actually going through that penalty would have been the full damnation >> not just the guilt of it. >> Yeah I know um Pastor Mark mentioned uh Warren Weisby that's where I first heard about him. We've talked about him on several of these episodes and he's kind of um as I understand it a a pastor of pastors as his primary focus or was he's passed away now. Uh but this was something that was especially um pronounced for me watching him online. He's a great speaker. If you've never seen Warren Wearsby videos of him speaking, you should definitely take a look. But this is probably the verse that I have heard him speak the most. And if you really camp out on it, he would just say, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." He would hit this all the time. It's the answer to so many questions that come across your mind, you know, probably continuously. What about this? What about this problem? You know, you're secondg guessing. Are you a double-minded man? All that kind of thing. His answer would be, there is therefore now no condemnation in Christ Jesus. It's I think we can gloss over this pretty quick. It's the first verse in chapter 8. But I just want to emphasize that and if you haven't seen him, I would Google this and just watch him talk through this for a few minutes. >> Can we bring up I don't know if y'all's studies recognize this, but um in the New King James Version, did y'all go into this? >> No. >> There's an extra line here in some people's >> Bibles. Can you pull that? >> Yeah, pull it. You got the Bible app already? >> Yeah, we'll race. Go ahead. I believe either that or I just completely was at the wrong se segment taking notes uh cuz in the ESV it doesn't say it here but um I was listening to Skip Heads which y'all have heard me mention him before. I love listening to how he goes through it. Um but he was saying that there are versions that had after this where it says in Christ Jesus that went on to say for those working for those uh >> who walk not according to the flesh. >> Yeah. Do not work according to the flesh but according to the spirit. And he was he was describing that. So if your Bible say that is that true? The New King James says uh Romans 8:1, there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit. And the footnote is that the inu omits the rest of ver of verse one. I'm not sure what the inu is. So he was he was saying that basically what what had happened was whenever they first did the uh King James they were going from source material that had this that had this line in it and just like they didn't have a highlighter back there whenever they were doing it. So they they used a transcribe of a transcribe transcribe and what they the most plausible explanation for this is that the writer somebody was transcribing this at one point and then went down and read later on where they do talk about this about uh walking according to the flesh but according to the spirit and that versus highlighting it he was trying to plug it in here to say like we'll get to this but that they actually found older versions and none of the older versions of Romans have that line in there. So, um, if you're reading this and some of your Bibles say an extra bit there, it's it's pretty conclusive that that bit was to give emphasis about something that was later to come, but that that was not in the older text and that's why most of the translations have omitted that. >> So, I know you have an ESV just for reference. This is the act, not the notes, but the act so it's right there on the bottom. Okay. >> In the subscript. So, they definitely call it out. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> What does it say in the footnote? >> It just references number one. It says some manuscripts add who walk not according to the flesh um parenthetical but according to the spirit brothers and sisters that's it >> okay which still aligns with later on what's kind of talked about but the emphasis being here is that like the definitive part of this statement being such just a I don't know a uh a concrete assertion to apply towards our salvation So, I always had like never really had a problem with this verse. >> Mhm. >> I just feel like this verse led to something different in me. Um, >> cheap grace. >> Yeah, you nailed it. >> Yeah. >> How'd you know? >> That's all I talk about. Check it out. >> You have mentioned it a bunch. >> I've mentioned a bunch, but no, it does. Um, and it's but what came to my mind with this wasn't Chief Grace comes to mind, but like back when I was going to that one church I talked about, >> um, that I would not submit to the pastor. When I would listen to his messages, every time I walked out, I felt like a good person. And so I always thought like that there's no condemnation in Christ Jesus. So when I went into a church where I'm like I felt I thought I felt condemnation, I was like, man, that was really speaking to me. like I I'm not this good person they're talking about. Like at this point I know nothing about total depravity or anything like that. And I'm like but there's no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Why do I feel this way? Well, cheap grace because and I always tell this to people that are dealing with sin and trying to trying to figure things out. It's like there's no condemnation in Christ Jesus, but there is conviction. Mhm. >> And if you you should be able to walk into a church and with that pastor's message feel some sort of conviction of why you need Christ. >> And don't let that conviction make you feel like it's condemnation because there's no condemnation >> because you're now in the spirit. But we still have that flesh. We still have that that old man, that flesh. And it's going to lead to some conviction of why you need Christ and why the gospel is so procluded and what we need to understand. If we understand the gospel, we should always leave leave feeling that we are not good, but yet we have good standing. >> Yeah. >> And that is that is the more important. >> We're not damned, but we also got to understand we still have to walk in the light. >> I know. I know we've hammered this multiple times. That's such a great point. This this is framed within the context of everything that we just covered the last two episodes. Like anytime somebody would say that, it's like, well, go read the, you know, five verses right before this, and we can get that cleared up pretty quick. >> Yeah. >> This is almost like a a relief because up to this point, >> some people may not be sure of their salvation because of the way that they're behaving. >> And the whole thing is you have an internal hopefully a spirit change, not necessarily a behavior change. >> And you're sealed by God. And there is therefore now no condemnation. It's relief. It's not permission to sin. >> Nope. >> Right. He's about to break this open because I mean, like we've talked about, he's got these two threads and he's been waving them around and doing this deal >> and then he this is this is the this is the the big conflict of because what he's saying right now is um what's a good word for it? Like it it's a conflict. It's a it's a huge pivotal point to go through all this and to say wretched man am I all this stuff. but for Christ Jesus. And to break in to say, "My mind wants to do it. My flesh does this other law." And then to say, "But for those who are in Christ, there's no condemnation." It would have been like gas. Everybody like what do you mean there's no condemn? You just you just said that like your turmoil of you want to do it, you're not doing it, you are doing it. Like what do you you can't just say all that stuff and then say no condemnation. I get Christ, but what are you saying? And then man, you know, here in the next segment, that's where he he's going to break it in to be like, I am telling you right now, you're not playing by the same rules as what you were. If you were in Christ, >> you are still in the game. >> You are no longer playing by the game's rules. And you need to accept that. And it needs to have an impact in changing your life. Absolutely. >> Not for to get to the other rules. you're you're you're already being applied to the different rules. >> The change isn't by your actions. It's the change is by the action that's being done within you. >> Right? >> And that's the thing that we forget about is that I think like when we go back to the story of the 17-year-old kid who RC Sproul talked about that he reached perfection. He reached perfection. >> Christ didn't reach perfection in him. He doesn't see it that way. And that's how we have to look at it is that that our righteousness is through Christ. But as we are now believers, that we need he's going to change us for towards his >> don't you all I mean it also very clearly says in scripture God will not be mocked >> so Ryan I would I would argue that you could confirm this if if you are knowingly or unknowingly going through cheap grace God is going to move you through that process pretty quickly through sanctification >> absolutely >> right absolutely when I say pretty quickly I just mean it it will likely occur >> at some point you're going to realize, "Oh wow." >> Right? >> I can't believe I did that. >> Right. >> So, do you remember a couple weeks ago when you were talking about the uh brutal punishment for someone that would kill someone else? >> Yes. >> And that they would strap them face to face with the with the corpse of the dead body that they killed >> and that eventually that rot from that deadness would become their own rot. >> Yes. >> I think I like where you're going with this, >> dude. the B like the word says for us to be crucified with Christ like and that's where our redemption comes from is because literally we are those now strapped face to face with a crucified Jesus and instead of rotting he has been redeemed and is living at the right hand of God >> bro I'm throwing the wig off we are literally strapped to him >> and the devil thought we were going to absorb rot And we are absorbing righteousness and sanctification. And it is like I mean the most beautiful poetic idea >> is that idea that we are strapped with Christ now and absorbing his righteousness. Not through not through what we've done. Because if if we were strapped to anything less than Christ, we would absorb rot. >> Yep. >> Until we were rotted ourselves. >> Bro, I think we could end the whole podcast on that right there. >> I considered it. Uh but we still got time on the days of our lives uh meter. But I mean you're you're exactly right. And you also have to think >> Satan is not omnisient, right? He doesn't know what's going to happen, but he knows what's likely to. >> Especially if you're praying in tongues, >> right? Yeah. Exactly. Certainly. He he definitely he can't he can't hear our prayer language. >> But he he knows what's likely to happen because again, he's got our game film. And you got to think like he thought he had God dead to rights, right? Through >> Judas, >> through the Jewish Sanhedrin, through the Romans, through Pontius Pilate, through through Nero, like he had uh like he thought he had him completely dead to rights only for him to walk out of the tomb. I I I just, you know, >> thorted. >> Yeah. It's hard. You know, CS Lewis even said this after he wrote uh Screw Tape Letters that it was the most difficult thing he ever wrote because he was trying to get into the mind of a demon. And as a believer in Christ, he could not have been possessed. But he said he felt just significant and serious and constant oppression, trying to get into the the mindset of a wormwood, right? And you have to think if you're trying to get into the mind of Satan when Jesus breathed his last breath on the cross and he was put into the tomb like I don't know how a demon and uh you know and Lucifer I don't know how they all celebrate but I'm sure they were celebrating like we've done it like this we we've thwarted God's plan for the redemption of humanity again going all the way back to him hating Adam and Eve right and hating the communion they had with the God he was so jealous of. I think that that's that's important to this as well that he had just had to been like, man, I just got outplayed. So, it's still game on, but dang, I I thought I thought I was going to win. >> So, you know, Yeah. grenades. >> Yeah. >> Right. I had this conversation with Mark, Pastor Mark. I went up and asked him one time after service just to get his thought cuz intellectually I don't understand and I'm sure there's tons of people that feel the same way but if you are literally you know an archangel one of the highest angels maybe perhaps the highest angels that in that vicinity of God then you should understand how incomprehensively more powerful than you he is and will always be. So in that context, the not the problem of evil, but the origin of evil, like what would compel a being to revolt? How could you ever think that you could cause any outcome other than what God wanted? You know, when when when Pastor Mark was on your last podcast when he came in, he talked about the Jewish people. um you know through the threat of history. It's a great example of a of a people that you know they were the last time that they were they had a nation was in 70 AD. Then it was destroyed and then it was reestablished in 1948. That's never happened in the history of the world with any other people. It's it's absurd how crazy that that was. And throughout the trend line of history, Jewish people have been persecuted in every case. And so when when it didn't work out for Satan in the fall, then you know, he tried to destroy Jesus and then he was raised from the dead and and all that sort of thing. And now it's based on the land, you know, the promise of the Jewish people delivering or ushering in um or being associated with Christ coming back. And so Christ or I guess Satan and demonic forces continue to fight, but for what? What is I mean there's this hope that you could win against God that you've been so close to that's incomprehensible. Like do you see what I'm saying? So I went and talked to Pastor Mark about this briefly after a church service. It's a lot to unload right after a church service. But his answer was genuine and honest and it's just there are some things that we don't we can't we can't explain. You know the reasoning behind that it's difficult to explain. But what we do know is certainly the perspective is to steal, kill, and destroy. It's a sobering thing. It's a real thing that we have to have the armor of God help us fight against. >> When I think Lucifer knows, so I know this is this is very dark, but Dawn life a man's podcast. But when you see people that are in tremendous tremendous amounts of personal pain and anguish, some of those people decide to turn that pain and anguish on the people around them. Some of which they feel like are responsible for their position of pain and anguish. And what do some of some of them do? They know that they are destroyed, but they want to take out as many people as possible before they either destroy themselves or death by cop or self- emulate or whatever, right? And so that's what it feels like. It is the desperate like flailings of a mentally ill high school student that's trying to kill as many of their classmates until they themselves are taken out or they take themselves out. That's what this feels like. And so he's like, I already know it's a loss. Satan has to know where he's he's going to spend eternity. He has to know that he has already lost, but he's trying to tip the scales anyway. He can't tip the scales. >> I agree. I agree with you. Just to make one point. A lot of people want to talk about evolution and all those things. The real argument is the origin of life, life from non-life. How do you get life from matter? >> Yeah. >> And so my main point is >> life from non-matter. be yeah before all of that occurs because I completely agree right now you're just trying to kill the thing that God cherishes most his people but in the very beginning how can you rationally or intellectually understand how a being that's that close to an overwhelmingly powerful God could make a rational decision to try to revolt or be better or win you see what I'm saying >> there's just some interesting >> I think that Satan is so arrogant that he doesn't believe Revelation. I don't think it's like, "Hey, I'm just I know it's I know that the end is coming, so I'm just going to take out as many people as I can." I think he's like, "I've got another plan. I'm I'm going to put this plan in fision uh into formation." And I think that he is so arrogant enough that he thinks that he can outsmart God. just like I I I I find him like no different than a non-believer who just thinks they know what's better and Satan thinks he knows the plan and he's going to be able to outsmart God. >> What's your basis? Like how do you come to that conclusion? >> How do I come that because how do you come to the conclusion that he's just like I just want to I just want to leave bodies now. You know, >> it does make sense. So like it it makes sense with the idea that at the beginning that there, you know, I've heard different pastors talk about versus around the angels themselves, you know? I mean, like whenever you look into some of that, a third of the angels fell is is what the scripture says. And so like that seems like a crazy amount that were like on board for complete destruction. >> Sure. >> Um and again, I think, you know, Terry always says, "Let the Bible say what it wants to say and be what it wants to be." And in some of these things, it's a big blink >> which God is okay with even towards the angels. You know, we hear verses that say even the angels wonder at the mystery of the things that we've been revealed to. And so like this idea that like well the angels should be somewhat all knowing. No, they're obviously not. So Satan is not as well. >> Yeah. Um, but it does there there does seem to make sense about the idea that there has to be some acknowledgment that if if Satan is in time, you know, we've talked about that before, just time itself, but if he is experiencing time in this, he would have experienced the idea that that did not go as planned. And from the very beginning, it seems like Satan's motivation was to prove man unworthy of God. So that basically before man that he was the delight of God in the sense that >> um I'm I'm butchering that piece because I don't know the reference but there was something about that I think he was the brightest star something like that >> and so like he was he was like some yeah some jewel or whatever >> um and that >> when man was created that there's some idea that he he did not see the worthiness and from that point is trying to prove the unworthiness. So you see it in the garden like the deception and to prove like >> oh well like I'll actually take the dominion from them because >> they can't even handle it with this one simple thing like I I'll just say one little thing and they'll give up their inheritance, give up their dominion. I'll take it from that side if you won't give it to me from the other side. >> So if if if Satan is the father of lies, he has to know what truth is. And so I think what you're saying is true >> up until the empty tomb. >> I mean, >> so he had so just just to kind of elucidate it fully. >> So he had to have thought this is a battle, right? I know the power of God. I'm also powerful. I peeled off a third of heaven's legions, right? Yeah. >> They're working for me now. Like I can win this battle. >> He's trying to build his own kingdom, >> right? But then whenever the tomb is empty and Jesus is resurrected, in order for him to be the father of lies, he has to know what truth is. And the truth in that moment became Christ. He's the way, the truth, and the life. >> Yeah. >> And so from here on out, he has to know that he's lost because he is not devoid of the truth. He knows what it is because he can't lie without it. >> I mean, I I I can see where you're coming from with it, but I also view him as a wy coyote. Well, I think that would be a foolish thing to do because a wy coyote is not going to be able to con you back into your old self. >> But I and I hear you on that, but I feel like he's always going to have a plan that he thinks is better. That's the point I'm trying to make. He always is going to have a plan that he thinks he's going to outsmart God. >> You're seeing his like grandeur as a cause for his arrogance. Yes. That it's like which >> which I think is all true. Like everything is check check. True >> until the resurrection. >> Until the resurrection. >> Yeah. Because at that point, you know it's over. I mean, right? Like there there's there's no there's no like mathematical way for you to get an A in the class right at this point. >> And I get I get you on that. Like if he is the if he is the father of lies, he has to know some sort of truth. >> He's a lion. He So I mean like this is one thing that the Bible says but then like we don't get descriptions of and maybe it does maybe we're just ignorant to bring some of the verses in here but you know it just reminds me of he's a he's a roaring lion seeking uh who he can devour and that idea of insatiable hunger towards destruction may be a guiding cause to him at this. >> So now now what you're saying is it's a numbers game. essentially that would be the >> if you believe that he's trying to build his own kingdom. So like there's people that believe that Revelations there's a lot of it that talks about that Satan will actually be trying to build his own trinity. Um you've got the uh antichrist uh representing Christ. You've got Satan I forget the other stuff. Um but but that's a pretty common theme. >> I guess it's just hard for me and like maybe this would be a great ask ask a pastoral question. If I believe in predestination, how can I believe in predestination if it's a numbers game? The numbers have already been set. >> Well, yeah, just because Satan >> But there will still be people on both sides of the ledger. But just because Satan believes it's a numbers game doesn't mean that God is playing by that rule book. >> Okay? Cuz that's that's just my that's just what's going on in my head when I'm trying to think about. What he's saying is that after the after the resurrection that Satan is aware of the loss, but what but what I don't think that you were saying is that after the resurrection that Satan now is aware of everything that God is going to blow our socks off and Satan's actions are not outside of the fornowledge of God. >> Okay? >> So he knows that there will be some that put their faith in Christ and some that will not. Satan doesn't know exactly who. God does. >> Okay. >> So, Jo I mean let's go back to a couple thing. I mean this is great discussion. What was the last thing that Jesus said before he gave up his spirit? >> It is finished. >> Yeah. >> It is finished. And the whole time that he was walking the earth and he encountered a demon, what happened? >> They knew who he was. >> And then I mean were they able to exercise any sort of >> No, he cast them out. And remember what was the one uh with the demoniac where uh where he basically was like has our time has not yet come like please cast us into these pigs. Oh yeah. >> So there was some idea of like even then pre-resurrection what I'm saying >> they know that they their time is numbered their days are numbered. So in terms of him having >> in terms of of sata I mean Satan has access to all of everything that we're reading now knows all of these things but he's it's been demonstrated that he cannot he has no power over Christ. Right. >> Absolutely. >> Then you go back to Job and Satan which I guess in some cases means the accuser. >> Right. He brings Job up as a righteous man and proceeds to try to destroy his life. And he didn't know what would occur. It didn't work out the way that he had hoped. Yeah. And and then he was kind of resurrected in a sense on his own. Job was >> Yeah. You bring up a good question. I mean, that's the thing that I'm thinking about is like they they knew that their like when they were cats and the pigs that they knew that their time was coming to an end. But I kind of think back I just watched the Passion of the Christ. I watch it every uh usually try to watch it on Good Friday, but I watch it on Saturday um before Easter last week. And there's the part where Jesus is being scourged and the devil Satan is walking around but Satan has such a delightful look on their face like they won and and it's just like if they still thought that they were in the game at that point like why would they think their time's up >> cuz we're still before the empty tomb. >> I think we're going to get into that in the next vers. I mean I honestly honestly I know what you're coming to there was >> there was the idea again if we think that if we think that Satan was is somehow h thinks that he can at least here's here's here's maybe what I think breaks this down or or like enlightens this a little bit is the idea of what what if Satan doesn't think that he's going to be able to get the whole pie but he thinks that there is a little cut out of the pie that if he plays this right, will be his dominion and that's where he'll have dominion. >> I don't even think I don't even think he would think that because again we have to go back to the fact that if you're the father of lies, you have preeminence over all other purveyors of lies. Okay? So you are the preeminent liegiver. You cannot be the preeminent liegiver if you have an unsure relationship with what truth is. But possibly know, but like he can't. >> But you could have you you could not like there could be an unknown that you don't have a truth or a lie to because it's unknown. So you don't have a lie to give about it because you don't have any concept of it. >> Prior to the resurrection, he thought he was in the game. He had to have thought he was in the game. Again, let's not let art reflect what the Bible says or doesn't say, but I would think that Satan was probably thrilled watching what was happening whenever he was being scourged with a cat of ninetails when Jesus was. Yeah, >> but again that he was still thought that he had won all the way up even into Saturday, right? But it was on Sunday when he rose. >> That's that's whenever the the game >> some of the best liars believe their lies. So I wonder too if there's not a piece of being the great deceiver that he himself is deceived into believing that there's a chance. >> But could could Satan have postmodern thought where he has his own truth? >> He introduced postmodern thought. But but I'm just saying but like >> but wait no but here here's here's a very important thing where we're kind of this this is good this is important. >> You can't come up with postmodernism if you think like a postmodernist. >> Oh absolutely >> you can't because there are truth claims within postmodernism which introduces the idea that there's no such thing >> as truth. Yeah >> right. This is what I always go back to. In order for things like postmodernism to take hold, you need two groups of people. Conscious nefarious actors and useful idiots. The conscious nefarious actors know what they're saying is nonsense. as evidenced by you see all these leftist politicians. They're saying, "Yeah, you know, gay marriage, polyamory, blah blah blah." You know what's what they all have in common? They're in heterosexual relationships with people that they've been married to for a long time with children in private school, right? They don't want their kids to have purple hair and nose rings and to be out there like picketing and all that. They are conscious nefarious actors and it's the useful idiots that will do their bidding. And so that's the thing is if it in order I I get the point that you're making Russ is that he's he's so good at lying that he's deluded himself. >> Yeah. >> But again we have to come back to how can he be so good at lying because if you're only good at lying most of the time you will accidentally stumble allow people to stumble on the truth, right? And I just think we're giving Satan a little bit too much credit in terms of the availability of his power. >> I think he's an idiot honestly. >> Well I definitely don't think would not say that. I'm just saying like >> I I definitely would not >> but I think he just I think he buy I I agree with Russ. I think he buys into his own lies that he thinks that he still he still can outsmart. >> I don't even know if I believe I'm just I'm just saying >> I'm saying I do see a side to where you could give some credibility to the idea that he is manip that he has manipulated himself into a into this grant actor. >> So here's here's two thoughts for you I guess. Um, one is what is what what can humans and especi humans can claim relative to all angelic created beings that we have that they don't >> the image of God. >> The image of God. So I think from what I understand that was probably the origin of this jealousy. >> Yep. And then through the series of events that we've just talked about, you know, getting to where we are today, it it seems like, you know, Satan likely just wants to destroy what God cherishes, which have his image. >> I mean, it's it's fight club. I mean, it's so here's one to destroy something beautiful. >> This goes back to your point. This was brought up in something I was listening to the other day. Do you believe that you have an eternal soul that will exist in hell or in heaven eternally or do you believe in destruction at some point for those that are damned? >> Oh, I believe uh eternal either way. >> Eternal either way. >> Yeah, I believe the Bible says, >> yeah, >> that we we are eternal beings. So in that sense it's how many people can I drag down with me eternally that God won't have. Now the predestination thing brings a whole another element into that. But I know we got to cover Romans but interesting conversations. >> I guess I guess one one thing to end on that though is he who is in you is greater than >> Yeah. Just the world because I have overcome the world. >> I don't think Satan's like some absent-minded idiot. I I know that what he does he does with with gusto and with some thought behind it, but I'm just like I don't know. For me, it's just like God's so much more powerful. And I know that and I know we know that. It's just hard for me to like I don't know. I >> I think it would be a mistake to think anything other than um he is a being that is >> literally a million times more intelligent, crafty, smart, and powerful than anybody that you've ever met. >> That's true. I would agree with you. So, Howardon, am I saying his name right? >> Yeah, you're saying it right. Okay. Howon uh actually in that podcast I was saying um he he talks about that in >> uh when when Satan tempted Jesus, he makes claims to having dominion over things. And I think we'll get into that the next couple verses, but having dominion over things. And Jesus does not refute his dominion at the time like like some of the claims that he makes. He offers Jesus all these things >> and Jesus accepts the idea that he is offering that but denies the things and like I'm not I don't accept them. Um and so like he has a Josh has a really uh interesting point on that to say that at that at that point in time um you know the Bible talks about having uh Satan about the dominion of the air and basically like he was making some claims there that Jesus didn't refute. So um by the sin in the garden had he gained some type of dominion that we gave up um through our sin nature through our flesh which >> we're going to talk about right in. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I think we can stick on the same discussion. I don't know that we uh need to necessarily keep going. I mean I did I did want to point something out kind of goes back to okay where do all these feelings come from? Satan's pride fueled his desire to want to be looked to and not through. He was able to peel off a third of heaven's legions, however many that would be. Um, and then there's this whole idea in this concept that the angels are actually jealous of us because we were made in the image of God. And we don't ever have a direct reference to that in scripture, but 1st Peter 1:12 gives us a hint. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves, but you in the things that they or things that have now been announced to you through those who preach the good news to you by the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven. things into which angels long to look. >> Mhm. >> So angels, they have a longing. They have desire. And in order for Satan to be able to convince Lucifer, this beautiful angel, all the indications we get from Ezekiel is that he was gorgeous, right? great to look at, great to follow, is that there was some inkling of that pride and that desire and that longing for how God communed and looked at his creation, specifically the apple of his eye, which would have been like, no pun intended, would have been Adam and Eve, right? The absolute pinnacle of his creation, even though he himself was the creator of the cosmos. And so I think that that's very important to the discussion. But I don't want people to get the idea that Satan is somehow um again even though I I'm firmly convinced that you know after the resurrection he knows his days are numbered and he also knows that he he doesn't know he doesn't have the fornowledge of who will put their faith in Christ and that does inform the predestination discussion whether that is choice or fornowledge. right there in lies the the big Calvinism Armenianism debate. Um but uh yeah I guess if we needed to we could go and get into verses 2 read it. >> No but actually before we get there I would like to uh take here yeah I can take another 15inut diet tribe about something else. Hey let's talk about golf. Let's talk about some real some real do we want to talk about it's like life you were watching golf in between anymore. >> What do you mean you don't care? We've already >> You know what? Let's talk about that. Where does this desire to not care anymore come from? Who hurt you, Russ? >> The word stands alone. So, let's >> The cheese stands alone as well. But, you know what? I'm going to take one thing from you. We're going to have Zach read uh Romans 8, but we're going to go ahead and do Romans 8 2 3 and 4. >> For the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law weakened by the flesh could not do. By sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. >> Fire away, useless. >> Fire away, you don't want to steal your thunder. >> I don't want to I I would normally sit back. No, no, y'all talk. But I I I just am excited about um about looking into this. So, I'm going to start with again last few weeks I've kind of set this up in referencing uh what Josh Howton was saying um on his podcast and you can go back listen to that start minute 19ish and he's talking about this idea that um Satan confronts Jesus talks about uh having possession over these things. Jesus does not um directly tell him like no these are already my things. Um, and he brought it back to this idea of dominion theology. So, in Jeremiah 32, he talks about this idea of, and I'll butcher this, y'all can go hear what he he's such a good speaker. Um, y'all can go hear what he says about it, but this idea this there's a story there that says that uh, one person is selling a field and he sells it to one person. And there's this idea that this one one person um will still have this inheritance sarai and this other person um can come back and redeem it. And I'm butchering all that, but the main thing is this kinsman redeemer. And so as I'm looking at this, what I what I was realizing in this is that so he talks about the idea that whenever something was sold like this, a property was sold, is that it was a double-sided scroll and that there was a sealed scroll and an open scroll. So the way that they would convey the property out is um the sealed scroll there was always so you all understand the idea of the year of Jubilee that there's uh you could sell stuff and then on the year of Jubilee you could reclaim that back to you and so there was an inheritance right to something um that could be redeemed by someone in the kinsmanship of the debt. Okay? So, like if you didn't have money to pay for something, you could you could sell off your property and to pay for your debt. And it was usually that debt was magnified the longer away that it that it was. And that there was a legal title to that property that would continue through that other airship, through that other lineage. uh but that someone that was a kin to the original through that lineage could come back and at a time pay for that original debt and say I'm akin on this side and then bring that back into the redemption of of the kinsmanship side. So the inheritance side and so that was like the sealed scroll was to seal that up to say like this deed has been done but it's sealed on the kinsmanship side. And then on the other side that was left open. So if I gave that to you that was open scroll and that meant that you could sell that to anybody. They left it open so you could write somebody else's name on it. And so what he was saying was talking about this idea of Jesus coming in as the original kin kinsman and redeeming us back. And so like this this thought was going through my mind as I as I was reading this is that basically what this is talking about here is it says that the flesh was weak. And so like that that that God basically saw that um sorry let me let me read it. For the law of the spirit uh has you read for God for God has done what the law the law weakened by the flesh could not do. this idea that on the side of the flesh, God had redemptive power on the side of the law, the sealed scroll. He Jesus had the kinsmanship ability to at some point pay that debt and revert that back to him that the dominion of earth back to him. But what God did here, there would always be like a segment of that title chain. So I'm a land man, you know, that title chain that never really got back. it would be a clouded title like this reverted back to these people. But there was a claim over here that really never got satisfied. And so what it's saying here in my view is he's saying that because of that side of the flesh could not be claimed by someone who was um uh not flesh. Like that was the second Adam. There had to be a second Adam to come and to basically be able to claim the inheritance from that side. And none of us could do it. So God by not being able to do it from heaven actually became flesh. Basically jumped into the game as a player and said, "Okay, there's a piece of this to seal up. I actually have to be flesh." And he became flesh. So that he not only becomes our kinsman redeemer, he actually takes over the title from both sides. He takes over the title from um from the second Adam standpoint of being the flesh that has now lived perfectly to where sin no longer has the inheritance rights to us, but also as the kingsman being the original from God. And so like he takes it from both sides and grabs it up and is like the devil probably thought whenever Jesus came to the earth he was like you're in the game now. Like I've got you. It's it's sealed. and he didn't realize that the whole play was for Jesus to to play it out to be that second Adam and to grab it from both sides. >> I saw it from a very more elementary point of view than yours. >> Okay, that's just a way to say I explained something that doesn't make any sense. >> No, it explains a lot. I was just like when I read it, I was like when I thought about it, I was like sin came in through the flesh >> and God defeated sin through the flesh. >> That's basically what you just said. And now you've opened it up with the scrolls and everything which is basically what the book of Ruth was like man I never really I had an epiphany moment when I read that. I was like >> sin started out in the flesh and God literally came to the earth in flesh and defeated sin with flesh. Something we could never do in the flesh. >> But now it sets it up why he did it in the flesh. >> You can't be a party. So like somebody that is not a party to a contract on one side of the contract can't be a party to that contract. >> God was already on one side of the contract. >> But he wasn't in a fleshly form. >> He wasn't in the fleshly form to be a party to our contract on the other side. And we weren't getting it done. >> That makes sense. >> And he basically he knows we wouldn't get it done. >> He came down and and got it done for us and said, "I'm going to be a party on both sides of this contract. The only way I can do that, I'm going to send my son. I'm going to send Jesus Christ. He's going to live this perfect life that y'all couldn't live. Yeah. And now he is the party on y'all's side of the contract. I'm the party on this side of the contract. The devil's left sitting in the middle going, >> "Yeah, >> what's left for me? I I thought I had this down on the flesh side of the contract. I thought I had dominion through Adam because I got him to sin." And God's going, "No, that was my plan all along." >> Yeah. >> This is awesome to watch. I didn't know you were a landman. >> It makes perfect sense that you get excited about this. It's just like watching the Winkler and Adam get excited about accounting principles. Yeah. >> Spreadsheets and power. >> But for what it's worth, yeah, definitely. One kind of weird thing that I went back to when you were saying that cuz I mean I I agree with everything you just said, >> you remember in Narnia. >> Mhm. Well, I remember >> like when when Alan comes back. >> Yeah. >> And and they talked about the deep magic, the ancient magic that he came back from. >> Kind of along similar veins, right? I mean ultimately um God's playing by the rules that he established but he is fulfilling those himself. >> Right. >> Yep. >> And and to your idea of the arrogance of Satan >> is he thinks he knows the rules better than God knows them and he wrote them and he's like >> you're not going to catch me in some deal. I'm I'm the one that made all the deals. And I've had this plan from the beginning because because I I always go back to uh >> who's the prophet that married the prostitute? >> Uh Hosea. >> And I always go back to the idea of like he was there to show the struggle of the redemption. >> And the idea that like you don't really you don't really feel that if you're her unless you have someone who struggles for you that way. And then it's almost by watching how how much they go through to redeem you. That's what brings you into like the true humility of like where it says, you know, a broken and contrite heart. Lord, that's what you want from me. >> Well, yeah. To say one last thing on this topic, if if I am Satan and I'm thinking through this and I've seen the glory of God personally, the last thing I'm probably thinking is that he is going to come in the form of a child, a poor child. >> Yeah. and live the life that he lived and suffer the death that he suffered himself as God as the ultimate victory play like that that would be very difficult I would imagine to to concoct in your mind >> there's some connection to Ready Player 1 I haven't fleshed it out yet but but I'm I'm close there so >> is there a connection in Lord of the Rings >> uh yeah we can get some other nerd on the podcast to see if we can draw that connection >> I want to mess with G >> no and I think it's it's important as Well, he probably could not have fathommed that he would have brought in the savior of the world in the form of a baby >> himself. >> himself. But then as soon as he did, he started working overtime to try to stamp that out, right? That's why so many children were killed in in Judea and in Galilee. And >> you know, >> whatever was going on in Egypt as Jesus was being raised there. Like I'm sure Satan was working overtime to try to stamp out the line of Judah. I think it points out that yes, Satan's intelligent. >> He's killing the babies. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Just like he did with Moses. >> Just like he did with Moses. >> Right. For sure. >> Satan doesn't have fornowledge. He may be smart. He may be cunning, >> but he does not have the fornowledge of God. >> We're making progress. >> Yeah. >> He's no longer Wy Coyote. He's smart. >> No, I mean, when when I was talking about when I was talking about WY Coyote, let me let me preface. When I was talking about Wy Coyote, I was talking about he enacts all these plans, >> but they always get thwarted. >> I get it. >> No matter what, that's what I meant by the I wasn't meant like he's some absent-minded idiot professor, you know. No, he's he has all these plans, but they always get thwarted. It doesn't matter. >> Like on a grand scale, that's true. But unfortunately, there are lots of kids that die needlessly. There are lots of people who go to hell that don't find CR. Like there's things. >> Yeah. I mean, he's cunning. He's sly. There's real consequences. But I'm just talking about when I use the wy coyote, it's just like he I always think he'll always think he has a plan that he's going to get one over on God and he doesn't. >> Right. I do I do think so I've I've kind of pondered this situation before and the idea like I love the idea that it says that through flesh God condemned sin. Like he got on that side of it and condemned it. And >> but it does seem like like what are y'all's thoughts on Satan himself? I have kind of grown to realize that I think Satan works in systems more than he works in the whisper of in someone's ear, you know, because I think originally whenever I was I was younger, I kind of gave Satan almost a omniresence um that I that I thought like he's just he's trying to get me and you at the same time and and all this stuff. And the scripture really talks more about some more limited uh things than that. And so, but then we see these systems in our world that whenever you look at the system, you're like, man, there's no way this thing wasn't designed. And conspiracy theorists kind of look at stuff and it's like, man, there's a there's a evil group that meets together on every second Saturday of the new moon or something like that and develops these systems. But like really, do we attribute some of the more evil systematic things in our world world towards Satan and him being more pathological in his development of trying to say like, hey, you know, one system that I haven't tried would be to convince people that God's not real. >> Well, the whisper is part of the system. >> It's part of the system. And then even uh this morning during the sermon it was talking about how different parts of scripture say that there are demons that are given basically uh dominion over nations. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. There is a a prince of darkness that is over America that is over Persia, Iran, that is over Israel that is over Nigeria that is over like there there are people and then >> you're saying that it says that there is or there could be >> Daniel if you go back and read in Daniel it talks about the princes and there >> Daniel 10 I think. Yeah, >> there is a formal organization. >> There's a formal and then go back to like screw tape, right? >> It's a it's a spiritual dimension. So I think my perspective on your question is it's both and >> I would agree. >> Daniel doesn't necessarily speak towards like America or things like like nations nations there nations and and at times it's talking about um Charlemagne and like it's talking about different people and then other times it's talking about future forecasts and stuff like that. Well, even still there there would be people that are over certain demons that are over certain uh physical areas, but then if you look at it in a militaristic con like concept, there are people in militaries that are over a particular area, right? And then in that area, you'll have a bunch of different regiments or a bunch of different, you know, legions or whatever the thing is. And so there are literally there's like a hierarchical structure to how Lucifer is attacking humanity. And but it it goes from the the macro which would be the nation to the granular micro which would be the individual person right and this is where we have the interaction with uh Wormwood and uh what's the the name of the >> screw tape. Yeah, Screw Tape and Wormwood, of course, the name of the name book, but yeah, so Screw Tape and Wormwood, you have them all right there that they are working to the granular level right? >> As would be true in any militaristic, you know, concept, right? Like there's what the the larger military is doing and then there's the M4 you're handing off to a single soldier like that that kind of an idea. So Daniel 10:12, then he said to me, "Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withtood me 21 days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia." So this is an angel talking to Daniel talking about how he's fighting the prince of Persia which is the prince of darkness the >> who is over Persia that was trying to he needed help and Michael came to help him because there's a spiritual battle going on >> and that's what he means by princes. >> Yeah. And there's some people that actually believe that >> at times I don't know like in our discussion on our Bible study this we just went in through all this but at times that there are actually leaders of a nation that might be one of those like was he talking about a prince that was in his ear or was he talking about that he actually was in the form of the leader of >> think about this by by the way I'm not this is beautiful but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't know if this is true. >> You're running out of time. You're It said there's 50 million grains of sand. >> 50 million grains of sand. 13,000 per second. By the way, we're almost done. >> Wait, wait. You said did you you sat there and calculated the number of grains about it? I pluged it like makes me nervous. >> Well, all I got to say, >> but but the main thing, this is a very short thing I was thinking about is been >> I'm reading through um I think it's Isaiah is one of the chapters right now. It talks about the talking donkey. Remember that? >> Yeah. Yeah. Go. And so the guy that was on top of the talking donkey, the reason why it was >> All right guys, we gota do a quick resilience boost life say we got a few left. Go ahead. >> Go ahead. Go the dude. Go. Just say it, Zach. Go. >> Why Why was the Why was the talking donkey like moving and walking around through through like tight spaces? Do you remember why? >> No. It's because there was an angel that was blocking his path. >> That's right. That's right. >> Right. Well, that same guy that was on the talking donkey, they found um an inscription with his name on it from an archaeological perspective. >> You didn't think the guy on the donkey cursed the donkey or his >> and then it talked back to him. So, here's my main point there. >> That was rooted in archaeology. It was an actual guy and a physical thing. the donkey was interfacing physically with a presence that we couldn't see but was impacting him. >> Mhm. >> So when you think about a spiritual force, I think that it's both and they're going to be impacting you mentally and then also systematically. >> The days of our lives have ended and we have to end our discussion there as well. >> But I'm just going to throw out something else.
