That's Browning. That's Horn. That's Dean. Now, we had a little debate before we got on to here. Okay? And it was about onions because I made the comment because we get a little lunch. And so, people uh, you know, peak behind the curtain. We do a couple of these. We usually break bread. And then, you know, we spend another couple hours doing this. And so we get some from a local barbecue place that I will, you know, leave nameless because it was not good. But I order a side of green beans. There were more onions in my beans than there were green beans. And onions are my least favorite food on the planet. Like I don't care how they're prepared. Don't send me emails like this. No, it's the taste. It's the texture. It's just the worst. I don't want it. I don't want onion powder anywhere near anything I make. But I I I got the sense that I'm the only one at this table that is like anti I'm not just like I don't like it. I'm anti-union. Like that that's part of my personality. Am I the only one at the table that has that >> at this table? Yeah. I mean >> I'm okay with onions. >> My dad's anti- onion. Like >> that's why I like them. I think >> I mean I'm not like mowing the yard coming in and being like, you know what, I just want to eat >> onion. But if someone's like put onions on your burger. >> Oh man. Yeah. Dude, smash brother smashed into those do onion rings. >> That's the best way to ruin for lunch. >> Yeah. God, I'm glad I wasn't watching. I would have thrown up like you didn't. Uh second. So, do you like at Thanksgiving, do you do green bean casserole? >> Not if there's onions in it. >> I mean, do you know that's like a key ingredient? >> It's like the the crispy crap on top. >> Yeah. No. And like when I worked at Outback Steakhouse in high school and they had the bloom and onion, I would just eat the crispy stuff off the outside like the fattest person alive where I was eating literally like fried breaded nonsense. >> So yeah, just not a big fan. But >> the transition here is hopefully we're about to experience something where everybody can enjoy the taste of it because if you're not watching this, maybe you didn't even notice have a bottle of Macallen 18-year-old sitting here. So I am a Scotch guy. Everybody knows this. Um, and you know the thing is is Degan, your your lovely bride decided to bring this over. Why did she bring this over, by the way? >> Well, I had mentioned it to you before that it was given to me years ago and it's been sitting. >> It's dusty. The bottle is dusty. >> It's dusty. Um, and so I think I had mentioned it you I know you're a Scotch guy, so I just texted her and was like, "Hey, drop that on the porch." And she >> graced the ability to do that. >> It is here. And uh, >> top of the lid is dusty. I just want something dusty. >> We're going to leave that there as evidence. Yeah, look how dusty that thing is. That's actually Man. >> Yeah, that's problematic. I don't know if we can get in close enough. Watch it. You know, the camera's going to be out of focus the rest of the time cuz we put the dustininess on there. Hopefully. Looking looking at the cameras. No, we're good. We're good on the monitors. But here's the thing about this. Automatically when I have this bottle, there are going to be some people in the audience that maybe you grew up in a tradition where, you know, alcohol was not a gift from God. This is something that alcohol consumption of any kind is bad. and against the rules and all those types of things. I do want to read Matthew 11:19 to you guys. The son of man came eating and drinking and they say, "Look at him, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend to tax collectors and sinners. Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds." So implicit in that is that Jesus, the son of God, consumed alcoholic beverages and not grapefruit uh juice that didn't have any alcohol or anything in it or something like that because implicit here, he came eating and drinking. And then it looks at glutton and drunkards, right? You wouldn't be considered a drunkard if you drank water or some other beverage. So, I'm actually going to pour some Macallen 18 out for us uh before we get to this. And the cork >> literally broke. >> How old is this bottle? >> I don't know. It's I mean, >> you ripped you like just ripped it like this though. >> Yeah. Like you would normally It's >> 18. >> I'm assuming that it's 18. >> Do you have a Do you have a wine? Uh, >> so this is what we're going to do. >> I know how to I know how to get this out. Um, so if you're at a gas station, okay, and you're walking the aisles and you just got a hankering for a candy bar, what what are some of the things that you would go for? Like that you individually, not, you know, collective view of society, but you individually, what are you going for? >> Yeah, I'm going for Baby Ruth or I'm going for uh peanut butter M&Ms. >> Okay. Peanut butter M&Ms. Got it. >> Ryan Dan, >> uh, I would go with a caramello or a Cadbury bunny egg. >> Okay. That just that's just in gas stations all over the place. is that that's just like what? Yeah, >> he would say something fancy. What a weirdo. >> It It's tough. I I would go I like a Twix or a Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. >> Okay, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Now, >> I walked away from a Twix. This is a funny story cuz my wife and kids give me a hard time about it. You ever like wake up at like 11 o'clock? I have no idea where this is going. I have no idea. But yeah, I'm here for it. Let's go. >> You ever wake up at 11 o'clock and you're just like, "God, I want a candy bar." or something like that. >> I mean, I was not woken up at 11 a.m. >> Wait, like 11? You went to bed at like 10:00 and you woke up? >> No, like I went I I fell so I was in a hotel room by myself. I was traveling for work and I probably fell asleep like around 8 because it was just a busy day. And uh but then I like woke up at 11 and I was like, "Oh, this >> Yeah, 11 p.m. I woke up at like 11 p.m. and I'm like like man kind of kind of want candy bar. I don't know what it is. uh get a chocolate fix and I'm not a chocolate guy. And so I get like I I get on my gym shorts and my flip-flops and and I go down there and I and I literally wait in line while this lady sitting at the phone at the hotel for and I'm holding this Twix and uh she finally gets off the phone and she's like, "You just want that Twix?" I'm like, "Yeah." And I'm holding like two bucks. Like it shouldn't cost more than two bucks for this Twix. I think I feel like that's that's a hotel at a Well, yeah, I didn't think about the hotel, but yeah, >> I would expect it to be like $7 at a hotel. >> She's like $5.89. And I'm like, >> I walked away from >> I walked away from the Twix. I was just like, I'm not paying $5.89 for a freaking Twix I can get at a gas station for like maybe less than $2. Like, >> I'm with you. >> I don't care how I don't care how late it is and how much I want that. Okay, which should also tell you that, you know, fat Ryan back in the day, 270 lb Ryan would have dropped that $8 or whatever on that Twix. I just walked upstairs and I was like, you know what? I'm was going to have breakfast in the morning. >> You know what, Ryan? Good for you, buddy. >> Yeah, good for me. I love it. >> But if it was a Cadbury Bunny egg, No, I'm just joking. I wouldn't have paid $589 or $4.98, whatever it was. >> Well, I'm out there with you. I like a good Reese's Zero Bar. One of the most underrated candy bars out there, right? Is that like a Is that the mint package? >> I'm not even going to say anything. No. Well here's >> silver and blue package, >> right? Which would make you think mint, which is why I've waited it for forever until I got one. >> It's spectacular. It's like white chocolate, nougat, caramel, all shout out to Zero Bars. My second favorite one, Reese's Fast Breaks. That's That's the one. If I'm like, I just need quick like need some glucose going on into the system, I'm going to get a Reese's Fast Break. Okay. But now, now we're walking through the grocery store. Okay, we're on the cookie aisle. All right, so this is not, oh, Grandma's, you know, chocolate chip cookies. This is not, you know, shout out to Eileen's Double Lemon Cookies. Maybe my favorite cookie on the planet, those of you that know. No, >> but you're on just the the aisle, the cookie aisle at your grocery store locally. >> What are we going for? What are our favorites there in that aisle? >> Just favorites or have to go with one? >> Give a couple. Right. So, what are we going with? Well, I'll do the soft bake chocolate chip. >> Okay. >> For sure. >> Soft batch. >> Oreos for sure. Oreos. >> Oreos. What kind of Oreos? There's all kinds. >> Double stuff. You know, they had at one point they don't make them anymore, but they were the They only were the thin Oreos, but they were pistachio Oreos, and they were incredible. Wow. >> The lemon thins. >> Oreos. I've never tried those. Those are good. >> The the the ones that I think are super underr. I'm a big chocolate peanut butter guy. Like Reese's, right? >> Peanut butter Oreos are awesome. Yeah. Well, what I will do is I will actually take Oreos, I will dip them in peanut butter and then soak them in milk. >> What kind of peanut butter and then have that? So, if I'm completely off the wagon right? >> I know exactly what peanut butter it is. >> Give it to me. >> It is Peter Pan's honey crunch. >> Yeah, Peter Pan honey roast. That That is the goat crunch. And so to all you haters, by the way, cuz when I was trying to get Joby to eat, which by the way, Joby, awful human being, what's wrong with him? I I literally set this up for months to get him a peanut butter and jelly. He's like, "No, I'm 52 years old, man. If I had to have me no peanut butter and jelly by now, I have now, but playing in the background." Yeah, I wonderre grape Welch's grape jelly. The goat of all peanut butters, peanut pan, honey roast. But then all you nerds, all you losers looking at all the cameras here, oh no, that's not it. It's GIF. just the best and it's blah blah and all that. No, those are people that have just not had Peter Pan honey roast yet, right? And don't miss me with all that skippy nonsense too. >> I grew up I grew up with Jeff and you told me about Peter Pan honey roast and I had to quit buying it. >> Yeah, that's it. But that's the thing is I don't buy it anymore, dude. And it's got like 14 g of sugar per every half tablespoon. So, it's like >> it's an issue, right? So, I get the non the sugarless peanut butter now. >> You should have You should have got Joby a GIF one just because >> he still wouldn't have done it. I could have put gold bars in there like that. >> But if you got him Jeff Gif, he wouldn't have been as addicted to peanut butter and jellies after that. >> No, but he didn't even try it. That's the thing. The guy just wouldn't even take a bite because of some weird inner constitution where it's been 52 years. Like, why not? Why? >> And as I mentioned at the time, what a dumb feather to have in your cap that you haven't had a peanut butter and jelly for that long. Like, live a little, Joby. Like, come on. Have have you a bite of peanut butter and jelly for the sake of the fans? >> Hey, you know what? I'm going to ask Joby this. I'm going to ask Joby this. And Joby, if you're listening right now, if you're listening right now, I I'm gonna ask you to do this for Kyle. >> Tell Kyle that you will have a bite of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich if he'll take a bite of a smash burger with onions in it. >> Oh, what? >> That needs to happen at the same time. >> Yeah. >> And I will make both of them. I will make the peanut butter and jelly and the smash burger. >> But this is only to his benefit cuz peanut butter and jelly is awesome. Certifiably awesome. No one's ever here would say a smashburger with onions in it is awesome. >> No one asked you, right? So, no one actually cares what y'all's opinions are. Okay, how about that? You know, no one even's brought no one even brought up onions on this particular episode. So, >> I feel that Kyle's a little pheriseical when it comes to onions. >> You know what? Fine. Here, I'm checking on it. >> I love it. >> If Joby will do it, I will take a big nasty bite of a smashed burger with onions in it if he will eat a peanut butter and jelly and both of them can be made by you. >> Yes. >> Okay. Done. Everyone shook shook on it. There's shook on it. Okay, good. What are you taking notes on over there? >> Okay, so I grew up a GIF guy. >> Yeah, >> Peter Peter Paner. >> Honey rust, dude. Honey, >> creamy or crunchy, doesn't matter. >> It will end your world. >> So, what I do now is I get like I get the generic peanut butter that's only like uh peanuts, salt, and oil or whatever, right? So, there's no preservatives. >> That's like That's like peanut spackle. >> So, you know what I do? You know what I do to make it like not so atrocious? >> Put onions in it. >> No. What I will do is I will take It's kind of gross. Well, not gross. It's mine. So, I'll take the top off and I will pour honey on the top, mix that in, and then I eat it down a little ways, pour some more honey in. And so, the honey is just, you know, kind of natural sugar. And some people are like, "Oh, you don't want to have a glucose spike or whatever." Yeah, I don't really care because it's all natural sugar. It's not any added sugar. And so, that's how I'll get after that. And I'll make my like protein peanut butter protein balls. And then I'll kind of do all that. But I almost forgot why I set all all of us up because I'm so distracted by the fact which by the way if you've got an old bottle of scotch, what I should have done, I didn't realize how old the bottle was. Every periodically you need to turn you need to turn it over >> to keep the cork wet. Like if you have a bottle that you haven't opened for a long time. So if you're a collector, every now and then just go ahead and kind of do that. But that's why guys will pop this off and then they'll put like a synthetic cork or something that that won't rot. But anyway, >> here I am. >> Hey, only 13% of people report onions as the least of their favorite vegetables. >> How many redheads are there in life? >> 13% 13% of men in Scotland >> have red hair. >> I correlation or causation. Who knows? >> Yeah, I think. Yeah, I looked over and I see red hair plugged into your Google. I'm like, what in God's name am I just about to get set up for? You need to clear your browser history, son. You have no idea what just happened to >> Maybe I need to clear my tabs. >> You're going to start getting asked for sunscreen. I'll tell you that much. So, there I was, >> sunscreen and anger management. >> So, there I was walking through the gas station minding my own business, right? I'm there with a little squisher. Took uh Squish with me to uh to jiu-jitsu. Um because James was sick or you know, oh no, he was uh Eli was sick and yeah, it doesn't matter. So me and Little Squisher are walking through and we go to get a drink and something like that and on my way out the door I see something and I don't ever do this like I know when I walk into a gas station there's nothing but you know it's like a minefield for a guy like me cuz I have such a sweet tooth and like my diet can really go off the rails quickly. That's why I'm so disciplined with it. So I don't even walk through the candy aisle. I don't walk through the chip aisle. I just kind of like go in there, get whatever I'm getting and then kind of like vamboo get the heck out of there. But there is a strategically placed box right on the edge of the counter before I walk out. And this is what I see. >> Oh man. >> Oh jeez. >> A combo. >> Whoa. >> Reese's Oreo combo. Cuz yeah, you're just looking at Oh, that's just a fourack of Reese's. Nuh-uh, son. >> God, dude, that's got Oreos. >> Reese's Oreo combo. So, I'm glad to know that we've mentioned Reese's and Oreos in the combo because the thing with a combo like this. There's really only a couple of options cuz it can't be awful, it's either going to be spectacularly mediocre or just spectacular. Okay, but since we don't have the Macallen that we can enjoy this time cuz we got to take care of that uh before next week, >> maybe we can just move right on to these. What do you guys think? There are four. So we can do a live uh taste test and we can evaluate it uh from here. So >> So they have the opposite of this too. They have Reese's Peanut Butter Oreos and we've had those and and they're delicious. >> And so this is remember the Reese's Peanut Butter like uh Reese's Peanut Butter like cereal. >> Oh yeah. We're just going to one bite. Everybody knows the rules. Uh and then we'll just give our natural reactions to this. So, as we can see, we got the little, you know, the frosting there on top. And then there's a little Oreo colors. All right. Yeah. White, dark. Okay. Mine's somewhat melted. Like squish held this for a long time. >> Mhm. So, looks like there's Oreo filling on the top of the Reese's. >> Mhm. >> There's chocolate on the bottom. >> There's the Reese's peanut butter in the middle, but there are chunks of Oreo cookie in the peanut butter. >> Yeah, there is. >> It's It's Reese It's Reese's heavy. Very Reese's heavy. >> It's Reese's heavy, but I'm I'm gonna >> I'm for it. I'm four. Okay, we got to we can't just Rotten Tomatoes this thumbs up or thumbs down or tomato non tomato or whatever. We got to give it a score out of 10 and you can't be a seven cuz seven doesn't tell me anything, right? An eight or a six tells me something. But let's go ahead and get He's licking the >> Mine was melted. I'm trying to get some chocolate. >> We got to give a score out of 10. And this isn't like a score of every dessert ever made, right? M >> you're walking in a gas station and you leave and you got this over every other candy bar. >> You know what I like better, I think, is I like the Reese's peanut butter cup with the Reese's like >> pieces >> pieces in them. >> That's pretty good. >> I like I think I like that better than this. >> The big cup the big cup thing. >> Yes. I think I would like that better if the top was just chocolate cuz I like the crunchy. I would think that that would be weird. How do they I mean chemicals, right, is how they keep that crunchy inside of that deal. >> Yeah, >> you have to think about crunchy and it was super good, but I I don't know how I feel about I'm not a big white chocolate guy. I'm assuming that top part was white chocolate. >> No, that was more like Oreo cream flavored or whatever. Speaking of chemicals, speaking of things that aren't technically food, >> I didn't get this. I didn't get the filling part of that. >> There was a little bit of There was a little better than there. So, you know, my nines and tens candy bars, these are going to be Reese's Fast Break. This is going to be peanut butter Twix, which is fantastic. It's going to be Cadbury Egg. >> Yeah, that's in the top up there for me. Zero bars. >> Cadbury is in your in your top. And you gave me a hard time. >> Yeah, cuz you said you'd pay like $8 for it and you can't get it. >> I would have $8 for it. >> You can't get it year round. The whole scenario was you just walt. >> This wasn't I'm walting into the gas station on Easter morning. Okay. Goodness gracious. Alive. The momentum ruiner over there. >> All right. So, you got zero bars, you got Cadbury eggs, you got, you know, peanut butter Twix. You got, you know, Reese Fastpixes. Those are my nines and tens just right off of the the one of these. I'm putting I'm giving this an eight. I think that was very very solid. The crisp the crunchy there in the middle. The little bit of Oreo in there. >> Man, >> I'm sad. I just want this uh like a business model to buy up the the stuff that's only like only comes up for like Yeah. And then buy up a bunch of that stuff and then sell it year round. >> Oh, people already do that because a couple of years ago I love All right, this just pause. Just pause. And there's something that I've had basically every Christmas season since I was a we lad. Right. >> And it's uh little Debbie Christmas tree cakes. >> Oh. >> Right. Little white, you know, uh little Christmas tree. It's got the red stripes on it. It's got the little little glitter sugar. The green glitter sugar. Mhm. >> And so I do what any self-respecting American male does and I around, you know, the end of November, last week of November, I walts into a store expecting to walk right over to the Little Debbie section and find them. They're just not there. And I'm thinking, you know, no big deal here. I proceeded over the next month to walk into about a dozen different stores, expecting the outcome to be different, and they weren't. And I kept hearing from people these rumors that, oh, they're at this store on this intersection and that intersection, and I would go over there. It's like a mirage, right? I love that you're tapped into the Little Debbie Christmas cake rumor, dude. Like that's about all the new snackakes. >> There's the Facebook group and everything. >> And so what what I've done is cuz some people are like they they're backup people, right? So they've always got so like you know we got some scotch out there. I've always got a backup bottle of Logulan 16. It's one of my favorite scotches. It was one of the first scotches I ever had. That's always got to kind of be on the bar. It's always got to be available for the guys that come over. Some of the guys are like that with Dr. Dr. Pepper like, "Oh, what if Dr. Pepper goes out or something or whatever, peanut butter, whatever your thing is." And so I wanted to make sure that I never felt the emptiness of that holiday season. And so what I've done, >> you've kept them warm. >> Yeah, that's why mine was so melted. >> There's an unopened Yeah, Dan. >> Let's get a closeup on Degan's face. The excitement. Like, but a guy that really needs his hit, he's he's going to be willing to sell his first born for this. So, we're still in Romans 2. So, guys, today we're going to be looking at Romans 2 6 through 11. And so, before we read it, I actually want to read something because I think all of us talked about in Romans, we have a bunch of different materials. So, there's a bunch of different commentaries we're going to the Logos Bible software, different things. So, I picked up this book by Andrew David Nelli, I believe is how he pronounces his last name, but it's a concise guide to the greatest letter ever written, Romans, put out by Crossway, which again, shout out to Crossway. They have a forging table starter set for undaunted lifers. So, if you want to get these five books, there's a great study Bible in there, a journal, a book by Vodie Bacham. You can get all that at a 50% discount. Just go to the show notes and check that out. But from page 44 of this book, this is kind of describing Romans 2:es 6-11. And so I just want to read this sort short section here before we really read the scripture. This passage is a kayazm which that explains the previous sentence namely that God will reveal his righteous judgment on the day of wrath against unrepentant sinners including Jews as we see in Romans 2:5. The kayazm has three pairs of corresponding lines. So we have a b cba. Okay. So I'll read a and a then b then b and then c then c. So a is God will repay each human according to what he or she has done. That's Romans 2:6 quoting Psalm 62:12 and Proverbs 24:12 and Matthew 16:27. This is a reason that God will judge the unrepentant. Okay. Then we go to the second A, which is God judges impartiality. He does not show favoritism. This is Romans 2:11. This is the ground for the basis for Romans 2 5-10. And then B, God will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good and thus seek glory, honor, and immortality. That's Romans 2:7. The other B, God will give glory, honor, and peace to every human who does good for both the Jew and the Gentile. That's Romans 2:10. And then C, there will be a wrath and anger for those who are self-seeking and reject the truth by follow uh but follow unrighteousness. That's 2:8. And then there will be trouble and distress for every human who does evil, for both the Jew and the Gentile. That's 29. And so it goes again. A B CBA. So it's Romans 2:5 and then 2:7 28 29 210 and then 211. So hopefully that made sense. So that's just kind of an important thing that shows that there are other mechanisms kind of undergirling the scripture here. But Browning, if you would because you've already got it pulled up right there. Let's go ahead and read Romans 2:es 6- 11. He will render each one according to his works. To those who by patience in welloing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek. but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek, for God shows no partiality. So there's a lot of things we can get into. So this we're going to park for the rest of our time this week, but really 6 6 through 11 and really 6-16, this is just showing us Jews will be judged, Gentiles will be judged. Um being a Jew does not spare you from anything. Being a gentile that didn't have the law does not spare you from anything. And we'll see that when we get into 12 and beyond. But essentially the the way I thought about this this chunk of scripture here is that every single one of us is creating a a debt ledger like to God that must be paid and we simultaneously have no way to pay it ourselves. And even for the most dutiful conscientious people amongst us, we just have no way of stacking up enough good deeds to outweigh the bad deeds. And that's that's one of the there's a lot of nefarious things about Islam, but one of the most nefarious things that doesn't seem nefarious is that no Muslim unless they are performing jihad knows if they will enter into paradise because they have to wait to be weighed and measured at the end of their life and their good we good deeds must outweigh their bad deeds. There's no really scaffolding for mental sins or you know murderous thoughts or adulterous thoughts or something like that. And so this section of scripture along with what we see before it and after it basically dispels with all that. It's like, yep, every single one of us is creating a debt ledger. And as we'll see throughout the remainder of the letter, it's like we have no way of paying it off ourselves, but there is a way to get it paid off. So let's dig into 6 through 11. >> Not everybody wants Ryan, don't do it. >> You already have stuff. I can see your notes. You already have stuff. Just lean in. I just thought you >> still thinking you might throw up. >> No, I still feel like I talked too much. Um >> Oh, no. Never, man. >> Just just pop in, man. Let's go, >> man. When I was reading this, I just thought about verse eight. Uh but th for those who are self-seeking do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness and there will be wrath and fury. And it's just like it it comes back to what you talked about um when do we hate sin enough? And it's like God hates sin, you know, and when we self-seek, we're not seeking his righteousness. We're seeking our own righteousness and how we live our life. And it doesn't matter how many good things that I do, I still have unrighteousness in my life. And so I think Paul is just leading up again showing that there's no partiality. Like the Jews who know the law, and we'll get into this uh in 12 and beyond, but the Jews who grew up with the law and know the law are no different than the Gentiles who don't know the law. So even though the Jews could die by the law, they're still unrighteous. And even though the Gentiles could die not knowing the law, they're still unrighteous even though they've done righteous things throughout their life. >> Yeah. I mean, it's interesting to as it starts off says he will render each one according to his works. I think feel like some people will take that and say, "Oh, see look, you got to get to heaven by doing good works, but I don't that's not what he's that's not the argument he's setting up, right?" Um he's basically showing that nobody can get there, period. And and even if we're even if we're doing good works, those works are like filthy rags. >> Yeah. >> For God. >> And there's something like in the past, and you guys might be able to help me out with this, is that like like storing up treasures in heaven. You ever see those bumper stickers where it's like, "Hey, this is this piece of junk's my car, but I have better treasures in heaven." >> And so, like, is this something like, you know, when we're all going to he will render to each one according to his works to those who by patience and welloing seek for the glory and honor and immortality. So, like if like let's say we do become believers, are we still is he still we're still going to be judged by our deeds, our good deeds, and our bad deeds? Now, does that keep us out of the gates of heaven? No. But I mean, I'm the type of guy, I feel like I'm so depraved, I'll just be happy to get a back row seat to the concert, you know, the worship concert. But like, there's people who have done really good things, you know, and like what kind of blessings will be bestowed upon them in heaven? Could he be talking about that here? >> Well, I mean, we're when we're believers, we are we're saved from the wrath of God, >> right? Um, but I mean, yes, our work still, I guess, can be credited to us I I think about like the um the chaff being blown away and then what's left is the things that we did to glorify God in his kingdom and those end up becoming I guess whatever he decides is our reward. >> But then I get that um in Revelation like I don't remember who it was if it was holy ones or I can't remember but they took off their crowns and laid them before the Lord. So it's even the even the rewards that they had or you know maybe it's symbolized by crowns are giving them back >> Yeah. to to the Lord because it's not about it's not about us gaining rewards in heaven per se. It's about us glorifying God with our lives as a response to the understanding and the depth of understanding of the gospel and what how much we've been saved. I I think of it like a like a life debt. >> Okay. >> Yeah. You're referring to Revelation 4 10 and 11. The 24 elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created." And I think it goes back to the beginning where we're talking about he will render. You brought that up, Browning. That word render is like to pay back, right? To to like reward somebody to each one according to his works. So that's referring, like I mentioned earlier, to Psalm 62:12, which reads, "And that you, oh Lord, belongs steadfast love, for you will render to a man according to his work." Then we have Proverbs 24:12. If you say, "Behold, we did not know this, does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it? And he will not repay man according to his work?" And so I think that's important for us as well because again you don't just take a single scripture and build an entire theology out. You have to look at what the other scriptures are saying in reference to the scripture. The obvious implication is not that our works save us but our works are not um useless. >> Yes. And you know in James 2 talks about faith by itself if it does not have works is dead. So faith without works is dead. Well it's not just works for the sake of works. It is works that are grown out of our faith, right? It is works. It is the works that are the fruit of our faith. Uh, you know, rather than like just kind of being just works and doings and hey, I did a good thing. It's it's it's like obedience. Obedience doesn't create um faith. Faith creates obedience. >> Well, Don, one thing that I wasn't really aware of until this year, so I'd love to get y'all's feedback on it. I was not aware until this year that there was confusion among certain people about what constitutes a work and what does not constitute a work because I was talking with an individual who believes that you cannot be saved unless you are baptized. Okay? So I don't come from any particular tradition cuz I didn't grow up in church. But the understanding I've come to from the Bible is that the first thing we are commanded to do after we receive salvation is to make a public declaration of that salvation via baptism. And if you are a believer and you have not been baptized that you're living in sin like you you need to get baptized. But I don't see anywhere in scripture where it's the it's the again the totality of scripture. You can pull out individual scriptures and say, "Oh, well, baptism is uh you need to have it because of this scripture right here." But it's that it's a symbol of an inward reality. But there's nothing magical about the water itself. But the person I was talking to, I I talked about where it's like, you know, we are saved by grace through faith, not by works so that no man may boast. And they're like, "Oh, well, baptism is not a work." And I'm and I'm like, well, well, wait a minute. They're like, no, baptism is just essential for salvation. It's not a work. And then they were I had never really heard someone argue that baptism was not a work. Like, cuz it seems so obvious to me that it is a work because and and again, I I brought up the thief on the cross. He wasn't taken down off the cross, dipped in water, and put back up. They're like, "Well, the gospel wasn't the gospel yet because Jesus hadn't died, and so that didn't matter for that person." I was like, "All right, seems like we're splitting hairs, but let me go ahead and concede the point." But it's just that this is where the conversation ended with this person. I said, "Okay, let's say you and I were to walk over to my neighbor's house right now, share the gospel with him in whatever language you prefer." And they say, "You're right. I'm giving my life over to Christ." And we say, "That's fantastic. We need to get you baptized right now." All three of us hop in the truck. We take off to the nearest, you know, let's call it a Church of Christ because apparently they have the most holy water. And on the way to there, we get t-boned in an intersection and all three of us die. Do you and I get to go to heaven because we were baptized and this person not because they weren't dipped in water? And they didn't want to answer. And that's where the conversation ended. And so I just I had never heard before that there's like a a debate as to what's not. >> Yeah. Romans 10:9 and 10 says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, >> it does not say and are baptized." It says, "You will be saved." >> Right? It sounds like modern day Judaizers and the fact like let's go back into 25 something we do. Yeah. Go ahead. >> Romans 2:25. For circumcision indeed is value if you obey the law. But if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. And so when it comes down to it, it's like Abraham Abraham was uh was saved by what? Faith alone. Like he was he was loved by his faith alone. Circumcision became a covenant sign of the Abrahamic covenant between God and his offspring. And so just like circumcision is a sign, baptism is a sign. It's not what saves you. Your faith saves you. Uh baptism is just that sign. Rather than having your foreskin cut off, you get dipped in water now. >> Yeah. >> You know, and that shows your covenant under under Christ. But your faith alone is what saves you. Your faith in Christ and what he's done is what saves you. Now, when I I mean, really, it's just modern day Jud Judaizers. It's just adding another work to show that there's a covenant there and that it's just not truth. >> Well, I thought it was quite a copout to be like, "Oh, well, that's just not a work." So, it's like, "Oh, we have a carve out for things that only agree with your theology." Okay. And part of the other thing, too, is if you were to ask someone like me who doesn't believe that that saves you. Well, do you think people should be baptized at all? >> Absolutely. It's called obedience. >> Yeah. Of course. I think so. I'm one of those people that thinks you should get baptized not whenever baptism comes up on the church's calendar next, but as soon as possible. Like, let's baptize you in a pond. Let's baptize you in a tub, but let's let's just get you baptized. But again, there's there's no real reason other than in that entire time if you're just, you know, if you're just avoiding it cuz you're busy. It's like no, like you need to express to the public that that that this is a new reality for you and for the trajectory of your life. Because again, as we talked about last week, the the body of Christ, the the the bride, right, should come together around that person, right? Because their disciplehip journey should start immediately. Their sanctification process should start immediately. But if we don't know about the new saving faith that that you have, then we don't know to to put that on you. like you're you're probably going to hopefully if you're in a good church continue to just be peppered with the gospel by people that don't know that you're already saved. It's just like, okay, well, what are my next steps? Cuz that's what a lot of people say, okay, well, you know, you're not saved by a believer's prayer either, but it's just like, you know, what do I do next? It's like, we got to get you baptized. And then it's like, do you have a Bible? No. Okay, let's get you a Bible. Like, let's just start doing the things that will aid in the disciplehip and sanctification process. But yeah, >> you know, in James 2 where it says like going back, faith by itself if it does not have works is dead is assuming that faith is faith is something that is is alive, >> right? And faith with some things like if if when when when you believe in Jesus, your life should be transformed. Your your your spiritual life is transformed, but your the outward expression of that transforms as well. how you deal with people, um how you love people, how you serve people, your your whole perspective should change. It leads to uh the true faith grows obedience. Obedience just pours out of faith. And so you should see people getting baptized because they are acting in obedience according with the word. But you should also see works happen because they are compelled to love outwardly, to serve outwardly, to share the gospel, this thing that has rescued them. Like if their faith is alive, it would produce fruit and visible signs of that that it is alive and well. >> Yeah. What is the what's the most deceitful thing about us? >> It's our heart. Yeah. Yeah. our heart say in Jeremiah 17 says in 9 and 10 says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick who can understand it and then 10 I the Lord search the heart and I test the mind to give every man according to his ways according to the fruit of his deeds I I feel like and you guys tell me if I'm wrong but a non-believer does everything selfishly and and and you got to hear me out like there's a lot of people that are giving a lot of money humanitarians and whatnot to a lot of things. But I would I would if I could see inside, if I could test their heart, I would I would really I'd be really interested to know if they're doing that with the right motive. Is it is it truly a selfless act or do they want their name on something, you know, want to be remembered by this this deal and that would be their legacy, you know, whatever. And I would, my argument would be that for the depraved mind, the one that has not been saved, that apart from Christ, because you can do nothing good apart from Christ, that all of your decisions, regardless of how good they look on the outside, have a root of selfishness on the inside. >> What do you guys think? >> Are we we're talking about the non-believer here? >> That's correct. And and what I'm saying is that when we become believers and we're truly transformed, then our actions that are through Christ can become selfless and they don't require some sort of I need I do this but I get my back scratched kind of thing. I don't need anything back. I'm doing this because of the >> I feel like that's what he's talking about right here is self-seekers. And so being a non-believer, you seek self. And so you can go and do good things, but who's doing those good things? You are. And you're going to seek satisfaction in yourself in doing those rather than giving that to God. And so like when I go and do something good, it's not by my hand, it's by his hand. You know, I'm just a vessel. >> Well, you Yeah. Browning, you read from the ESV, the King James of Jeremiah 179 is even I feel like even more like sticky or sharp, I guess. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it? And so just think about that phrasiology, desperately wicked, right? Think about when you're desperate to act in a certain way, right? So I don't know, maybe you're I've talked to a lot of guys recently whose marriages are just in a rough spot. What if you were desperately trying to love your wife? Like your whole life depended on it. Like you were just desperately trying to love your wife. Um you know, let's say you're significantly overweight. You've had some health problems come up and your doctor's like, "We got to lose some weight." Then you're you're desperately working towards health like you're with desperation like counting your calories and and counting the miles you know that that are behind you and you're running or whatever but you're desperately wicked right? Think about a person that you would consider to be wicked in the things that that person would have to do. Like there's there's an enslavement mentality here that we are enslaved to our wicked hearts and our wicked natures when we are before like without Christ, right? before salvation. And I I feel like some people again, we just kind of judge ourselves as, oh, I'm not that bad. Go back to Romans 1 and go back to the first part of Romans chapter 2. And it's just like, gosh, none of us could possibly measure up. But like, you bring up the desperation part. Well, let's talk about the husband with the wife. He's desperately trying to love his wife. Why is he desperately trying to love his wife? because >> because he wants to feel a certain way or he wants uh a certain sexual gratification, but is he putting God first? Is he seeking his wife because God wants him to seek his wife? >> You know, that's where you give it up. That's where the desperation of your heart when your heart is for what God wants and not what for what you want. That is showing true repentance. And so, same thing with weight. You know, the doctor's telling you to lose weight, but am I losing weight so I can look good, so I can pick up chicks, cheat on my wife, whatever. Or am I wanting to live long enough to disciple my children, to disciple more people, and be obedient to what God's asked me to do? So, when we look at the heart, if the heart wants what and is aligned with what God wants, then our heart is in the right passion. But if we're not believers, our heart's not going to be aligned that way. >> Yeah, that that's right. I mean, you're you're playing on the the desires of man because we we can't possibly have positive mo like uh motives because our hearts are desperately wicked. >> Well, this is what comes back to >> the Calvinist argument that we have like all the time, >> you know, and like this is what made me think of it uh in the fact that, you know, I have that Calvinist lean on God's sovereignty like God opens your eyes to the beauty of the gospel. Your only job is to bring your sin and repent. That's it. But his job is to open your eyes to the beauty of it. And so if our hearts are so wicked that God has to open our hearts towards his will, we're not we're not strong enough to open ourselves. He's got to do that for us. The Holy Spirit's got to open us up. And so that's where it just comes down to. And then we talk about the obedience. You know, I have that Calvinist sovereignty of God lean. And you made me think about this when you brought that up where it was just like it's our obedience. Like I believe that God opens your eyes to the gospel. That does not mean that I stop preaching the gospel. That does not mean that I let God do his thing and I just sit here and provide no works as Jeremiah is talking about. Or was it Jeremiah? >> James. >> James, excuse me, James. I I knew I misspoke. Um and so that's where it comes down to. It's like even though God has his plan and this is his plan and this is what his truth is, you still need to be obedient to what he asked you to do whether you understand it or not. That's right. Well, when you read 6 through11, it sounds a lot like that getting works right is going to be important for your salvation. And and that's not what Paul is saying. What what Paul is saying is he's not teaching that that we have salvation by works, but he's revealing that the evidence of true faith is a life transformed, right? a a life transformed by grace is going to have evidence that is visible that other people will be able to see. And those are acts of obedience and works of faith. But it also goes back to what I talked about last week in Turk's uh um what do you want to call it? I don't know if it was like a teaching or preaching or what. >> He basically preached at Charlie >> he basically preached at Charlie Kirk's memorial. But if you look at this and he will render each one according to his works. So, he's trying to show us that that without Christ, we're going to be re rendered according to our works. And will our works, our good works outdo our bad works? It doesn't matter. I could Let's say I did 90 good works and 10 bad works. You think God's going to be like, "Oh, God hates sin." Yeah. >> Sin cannot get into the presence of God. He hates it that much. I could have 99 good works and one bad work and that still keeps me out of the presence of God. >> Well, and that's the whole reason for the Mosaic law, right? >> Yeah. And that's what he's trying to show here is he's trying to say you're not obeying truth in everything that you do. It's impossible. It's impossible. >> One, this has been helpful for people. So, I know I've said it before, but I think it bears repeating is when you're trying to evaluate yourself, right? Think of it this way. Think of it like you're hovering over yourself in your life and you're kind of looking at yourself. And now think like a prosecuting attorney. Okay? >> Is there enough evidence to convict you guilty of being a Christian? Okay? Because if your evidence for yes, I'm a Christian is I was baptized when I was a kid. I've said publicly that I believe in God and I wear a cross necklace. I'm I'm sorry. like a jury of your peers needs to beyond a reasonable doubt be able to convict you of being a Christian. And so that's where I think I I feel like that's a better way of viewing works because otherwise we get into a little bit of a [inaudible] contest like whose works are fancier. Oh, this one preached the gospel to 2,000 people at a speaking engagement. This person, you know, just mentioned the gospel to somebody in a cubicle. And so we look at those things as as different, right? So we're we're trying to add like you have this many, you have 90, that person has 10. or you try to add them all together. It's like, no, no, no, no. Just you. There's a prosecuting attorney and you're the prosecutor. You because you know everything there is to know about you. You have all the evidence. Nothing can be hidden during discovery, right? Is there enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian? Because then you have to ask, well then what begets Christianity? Like what confers that you are a disciple of Jesus? What is a disciple? What does it mean to put your faith in Jesus? Cuz there are a lot of people out there and I know some of them and I love some of them that are in this place right now. They believe in God. They believe that Jesus was a real man that walked this earth and as Jordan Peterson does, they believe that he was put in a tomb after he was murdered on a cross and three days later walked out of that tomb alive. But they have not placed their faith into that reality for themselves. they are still relying on themselves and their good works and their good deeds to be good enough for a holy and just father. And so that's the the problem for a lot of people when you're looking at your works. Could you be convicted of being a Christian? >> The problem is is that we're we we can't look at works. And that's what he's trying to point out here. I like I said, we're talking about a just God. And if we ask God to be the just God that he is and expect him to be the just God that he is there, you could, like I said, like we don't even put a number on it. Let's just say you've just you've done all these good things. You brought all these people to Christ, but you checked out a waitress's butt one time when you were 17 years old. You're done. Doesn't matter. Without Christ, you're done because Christ is the only one who walked this earth as a human being without one iota of sin in his life. He is the that that's why you have to put your faith in that because you can't put your faith in your works. You can't put your faith in anything other than Christ because you are never going to line up to what God calls righteous. >> And I would just say that when you said that you did everything right except you look at the waitress's butt and you're done. But we're not sinners because we've sinned. We're sinners because we're born into that. We're born into it. You know, you've already missed the mark basically by being born. >> And I agree. already. But like people want to look at it like if we're talking about this in in a line of works. Yeah. Like we live in a sinful world. I mean us doing something one time, that's not going to happen. We're going to sin multiple times. Even as a believer, I continually sin because I that's what what sanctification's for, you know, and that's how I'm sanctified each time. It's like, man, I feel that conviction. >> Lord, I repent. Help me move move beyond that, you know? And so, we're always going to go down that that road. But if we we look in we live in this type of world right now where we want to outlook at we want to judge our good and make sure our good outdoes our bad and it doesn't matter that one bad is going to outdo all the good you've ever done >> right I mean the Mosaic law I mean the Jews look at that and they go well we're justified by the Mosaic law like we if we hold the law then we're good and remember Jesus said you know this I remember the guy's name or was even announced um he came up said teacher um I've kept the whole law and he said great sell all your stuff. >> Yeah. Rich young ruler, >> you know, and come come and follow me, right? And he went away sad. Um, so I mean, they they look at it like it's supposed to be justified. And really what what it was meant to do was to expose their sin. >> Well, let's go back to Acts during Steven's martyrdom and how um the uh Pharisees and the Sadducees had people lie about Steven to the court among them. Like they didn't go and do the lying, but they promoted the lying. And that's where Christ talks about the heart. And that's why I bring up the waitress. It's like nobody knows what you just looked at and what went on in your mind that could go through secret sin the rest of your life. You could do all this good, but in your mind that one time you made a look and you had that that that one look in your heart and that bad thing, nobody may ever know about it. God knows, you know, and that and you could you could everybody could see 100% goodness out of you your whole life. And that one thing, God knows, you know, and it that's just the why we'll never be justified by our works. And that's why Christ always goes after the heart because the heart is what we say is the most deceiving part, but the heart is the most secret of everything.
