1:18 I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
1:25 Welcome back to the Forging Table.
1:26 The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:30 forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:33 At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:38 by digging into God's Word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:41 us.
1:42 That's Ryan.
1:43 That's Kale, that's Adam.
1:44 I don't know why everyone's laughing.
1:45 We're just over here having a good time.
1:46 I didn't need to correct the record on a couple of things.
1:49 Last week, I think I said multiple times that David wrote Psalm 42.
1:54 He definitely didn't write Psalm 42, and I think I made someone else at the table say
1:56 the same thing.
1:57 So thanks a lot, Adam, for making me look bad afterwards and not like correcting me in
2:02 the moment.
2:03 How dare you?
2:04 You're welcome.
2:05 There was another mistake that was made.
2:06 I forget, but we'll get there.
2:07 But can we continue this like sushi debate that was happening?
2:10 Because here we are eating brisket, like that had been cooking all day, and all you nerds
2:14 could talk about was where the best sushi can be found.
2:18 Here's the thing.
2:19 I'm a sushi redneck.
2:20 I'm a tempura, sushi guy, like everyone that's like, "Oh, this hasn't made me mean."
2:24 It comes from "Yeah, yeah, yeah."
2:25 I have no freaking idea.
2:26 I just put it in my goal, and if it's delicious, I'll eat another piece, and if not, I don't.
2:29 But y'all seem to all have matrices of categories of deciding what is sushi that is good enough
2:36 for your pallets.
2:37 So how about you enliven everybody?
2:39 So this will be the fine dining segment of the forging table.
2:43 Like I was very enthralled by all the arguments that were being made.
2:46 I didn't know Caleb really well.
2:48 We've been on the forging table a couple of times.
2:50 Yeah.
2:51 Today I finally learned that his taste in sushi is crap.
2:54 Okay.
2:55 Well, we need to know why, because he seemed rather confident in his ability to pick out
2:59 good sushi, but then everyone had their own categories here.
3:03 Well, you know, when you say your favorite sushi is a steak sushi, then I know that you
3:07 don't really eat sushi.
3:08 Oh, no.
3:09 I'm just saying.
3:10 It's probably the best kind of sushi.
3:11 It's really good sushi.
3:14 It's just a different camera.
3:15 I've also told you about the nigiri.
3:16 You said you got it every time.
3:18 Well, every time.
3:19 It's so good.
3:20 Okay.
3:21 I don't even know what that is.
3:22 It's your favorite.
3:23 Pause, pause, pause.
3:24 What is nigiri?
3:25 Nigiri is so that's like a filet of fish on top of some rice.
3:26 So it's like McDonald's, like the McFish with, you know, the rest of those.
3:29 There's nothing fried.
3:31 It's raw.
3:32 And I usually get that, but this one place we go to, they have a steak roll, and it's
3:37 like steak on top that's torched with coconut shrimp in the middle with jalapeno and avocado.
3:46 It doesn't sound like sushi.
3:47 This sounds amazing.
3:48 It's, it's, it's, it's not like sushi sushi, but it's freaking good.
3:52 Do they sell it at a sushi place?
3:53 You probably can get it at a sushi fair.
3:55 I mean, I mean, the sushi you, you do get it at the same fair.
3:58 Does it come on a stick?
3:59 Does it come on a stick?
4:00 Because that would make it like state fair fair.
4:02 So what are the other?
4:03 We didn't talk about this downstairs, but the actual place that I've had that is my
4:07 best sushi was Lawrence, Kansas.
4:09 Really?
4:10 Yeah.
4:11 Right by the shop.
4:12 Jayhawk.
4:13 Okay.
4:14 What'd you say?
4:15 Yeah, right by the ocean.
4:16 Yes.
4:17 Yeah.
4:18 That's exact.
4:19 I forgot.
4:20 Yes.
4:21 It's probably the farthest sushi place from any ocean.
4:22 I had cake.
4:23 Well, the ocean, you're talking about the sand bar ocean, like the bar that's there called
4:24 the sand bar.
4:25 Is that what you're talking about?
4:26 No.
4:27 What is the ocean?
4:28 About the actual ocean sushi comes from.
4:29 Okay.
4:30 Someone listening from Lawrence, Kansas, who knows what I'm talking about.
4:32 The sand bar is a bar that's in Lawrence, Kansas, and then the sushi place is really
4:36 close to that.
4:37 Yeah.
4:38 Best sushi I had was in Maui.
4:39 That's probably a good place.
4:40 I've had sushi in Maui.
4:41 Sure.
4:42 And Lawrence, Kansas was better.
4:43 Yeah, Kansas.
4:44 I had a place in Dallas.
4:45 I wasn't bad, but hey, I'm taking it to the place he goes to and we could just be like,
4:49 dude, sushi in Lawrence, Kansas is way better.
4:51 Okay.
4:52 Exactly.
4:53 But we do have a lot of people listening to the show in Oklahoma City.
4:55 So how about you nerds?
4:56 Give us your best pick.
4:57 If you can only go to sushi one place in the Oklahoma City metro area, give it to us, and
5:01 then we'll move on to like real topics.
5:03 So, Cafe icon.
5:04 Cafe icon.
5:05 It's obviously sushi make up.
5:08 Oh, gosh.
5:10 Obviously.
5:11 Okay.
5:12 Well, guys, if you're an Okey in the comments section, let us know who is correct.
5:15 And I don't even have it.
5:16 I'm like a sushi bar guy, which apparently makes me like a.
5:18 That's like the trailer.
5:19 Oh, my see.
5:20 See the abuse.
5:21 I mean, you can totally tell it comes from a lot in sushi bar.
5:25 Yeah.
5:26 No, they went from a lot and there would be like bullet casings in the sushi roll like
5:30 somehow or something like that.
5:31 They give you sushi on a stick.
5:32 It has the word sushi in it.
5:34 It must be good.
5:35 Right.
5:36 Gas station.
5:37 The fancy restaurant doesn't matter.
5:38 They're just charging you more for the same garbage.
5:39 It's just like raw fish at the end of the day, right?
5:42 Or it's supposed to be.
5:43 Didn't.
5:44 Did you bring gas station sushi to my shop one time?
5:46 Never.
5:47 I think you know what it did.
5:48 I think it was.
5:49 It wasn't me.
5:50 Like not Zack Todd.
5:51 It was a different Zach.
5:52 Yeah.
5:53 I was never.
5:54 I don't even get sushi at the grocery store, man.
5:55 That's gross.
5:56 That is terrible.
5:57 I might have.
5:58 I was like, you are such a diva.
5:59 My goodness gracious.
6:00 I didn't know there were all these rules.
6:01 It's whiskey.
6:02 That's partially my fault.
6:05 Not my fault at all.
6:06 The second one.
6:07 Yeah.
6:08 Okay.
6:09 I accept responsibility for the first.
6:10 In clones?
6:11 Clones.
6:12 No.
6:13 Okay.
6:14 No.
6:15 Wait a minute.
6:16 You don't get to talk for 60 seconds.
6:17 So I was.
6:18 Had this moment where I couldn't shower at my house for a second because there was stuff
6:21 going on.
6:22 And so I'm out and about and I need to take a shower and I need to take a shower like
6:24 right now in the closest house I was to that I knew the guy would be there was Ryan's
6:29 house.
6:30 And so I'm like, Hey, Ryan, can I just pop out your house real quick and take a shower?
6:32 Yeah.
6:33 Sure.
6:34 Absolutely.
6:35 And so like, you know, gets me a towel and does the whole, you know, southern hospitality
6:37 thing and all that.
6:39 And so after I get out of the shower, I'm looking for, you know, Q tips or something
6:42 like that.
6:43 And so I open up the cabinet and it's like Macy's in there and I don't mean a parade.
6:47 There are a thousand different clones in this dude's side of the bathroom.
6:53 And I have not seen that much cologne since like I was like 17 years old where we're all
6:58 like wearing like Axe body spray or some like curve or cool water or I actually work alone
7:04 called Pimp for a long time.
7:05 You bought it at Gadzooks or one of those types of places or hot topic.
7:09 Did you get that?
7:10 Was that the lot?
7:11 Yeah.
7:12 Yeah.
7:13 Yeah.
7:14 For sure.
7:15 And it works.
7:16 Obviously.
7:17 It was like patchouli and sweat.
7:18 So did you have a bottle of black panther?
7:20 No, with real bits of panther?
7:22 Yeah.
7:23 Sex panther.
7:24 Sex panther.
7:25 Sex panther.
7:26 This is not completely off the rails.
7:27 And we do need to know because I've been around you a lot since we've known each other.
7:30 And never once have I thought to myself, hmm, that guy stinks.
7:34 It's either because you're always covered in cologne or because you just don't need
7:37 it because you just naturally don't stink that much.
7:39 So what is the deal with like the 74 different varieties of cologne?
7:43 I'm just so fat and lazy.
7:44 I don't sweat.
7:45 No.
7:46 I will tell you, I have a real fear of smelling bad.
7:51 This has been a fear I've had since I was like a little kid.
7:53 I have a healthy fear, but then I also like I spend money on cologne.
7:57 You say it's a Macy's?
7:58 No, man.
7:59 You're walking into a Neiman Marcus when you go into that.
8:01 Oh, my God.
8:02 This is like Rick.
8:03 Sushi and cologne.
8:04 Captain [inaudible] over here.
8:06 Oh, my God.
8:07 And it all started with me being a [inaudible] like my cologne sensation because my wife will
8:11 tell you on the first date, she's like, oh, my God, you reeked of this cologne.
8:15 And she had to buy it for me for our anniversary.
8:18 So do you wake up, put on cologne and then go make a salad?
8:21 Is that what happens?
8:22 Yeah.
8:23 Yeah.
8:24 So first I put on my leotard.
8:26 Okay.
8:27 No, no, no.
8:28 Hey, we need to know how.
8:29 So how do you put cologne on?
8:30 Because they're like the guys that just do the little dollop and put it on their wrist
8:32 and rub it together.
8:34 They're the guys that like spray, spray, spray, spray, and then they like run through it
8:36 real quick.
8:37 So since you're apparently like an absolute hoity-toity person about cologne and sushi,
8:42 like, how do you put what is the proper way for the horn to put on cologne?
8:46 I don't go by that anymore.
8:47 That's okay.
8:48 I still call you that fine.
8:49 It's the 14 table that Toby left.
8:50 So what is the 14 table that that Toby loves?
8:53 So how does this one go about putting on cologne?
8:55 So I just spray two sprays right here.
8:58 One spray on the back of the neck.
8:59 What about the four people just listening at home?
9:00 They don't know where here is.
9:01 So two sprays on each, on each pack.
9:04 So that's four total?
9:05 No, no.
9:06 One spray on each pack.
9:07 Okay.
9:08 One on each pack.
9:09 One on the back of your neck.
9:10 And then I will spray my wrist twice, rub it together, and then I'll hit my neck and then
9:17 I'll also do my head too.
9:19 No.
9:20 Ryan.
9:21 Ryan, that's a lot.
9:22 But I always smell good.
9:23 Well, no, I'm saying you always smell neutral.
9:26 You don't even smell good.
9:27 Like I've never been like, oh, that guy smells good.
9:29 Hey, people hug me.
9:30 I'm like, you recognize my essence.
9:32 Well, you don't even like herbal essence.
9:34 But it'd have to be the same essence every time you were you're always wearing different
9:39 cologne.
9:40 I have like five or six different creeds.
9:42 And then I've got some stuff.
9:43 What does that mean?
9:44 What does that mean?
9:45 Like it's a, it's a cloned by Scott Stapp.
9:51 It's a cologne brand from like London, or maybe France.
9:54 I can't remember.
9:55 France sounds fancier.
9:56 Just go.
9:57 Yeah.
9:58 Let's just go there.
9:59 And you, I get it.
10:00 You can get it at Dillard's now, but I used to have to like order it.
10:03 But you get it.
10:04 By the case.
10:05 But like, yeah, I got like green.
10:06 I was tweed.
10:08 I got the oud.
10:09 I've got the good old no.
10:13 They should make that.
10:14 I'd wear it.
10:15 I'd drink it.
10:16 I wouldn't wear it.
10:17 And you would die.
10:19 Yeah.
10:20 So is one of these bottles like 50 bucks, 70 bucks, 100 bucks, what are we talking about?
10:25 You guys are going to make me like a super huge [inaudible] bag.
10:27 We're not going to make you look your name.
10:29 You know how much I've spent on hunting and on firearms.
10:32 They're like they go between $450 to $550.
10:35 That's a lot.
10:36 That is more than I was expecting.
10:38 Her bottle?
10:39 Her bottle.
10:40 And it doesn't come with it.
10:41 It doesn't come with like sandwiches for a month or like any like no perks.
10:44 Are they collectible?
10:45 No.
10:46 I mean...
10:47 Okay.
10:48 Oh my gosh.
10:49 My mind is bad.
10:50 Hey, you look good.
10:51 Yeah.
10:52 How are we supposed to go on with what we're supposed to talk about today?
10:54 I have you have thousands of dollars worth of cologne in your bathroom.
10:58 Thousands of dollars worth of whiskey in my office.
11:00 That's way different because it's awesome.
11:02 But this is cologne we're talking about.
11:04 My cologne friends think it's awesome when I have my cologne friends.
11:05 You have cologne friends?
11:07 This is getting more, more you talk.
11:09 Winklers.
11:10 Winklers are cloned.
11:11 Don't throw him under the bus.
11:12 He's not here to the business.
11:14 Winklers wears a creed.
11:15 Yeah.
11:16 He wears Axe body spray probably at most.
11:17 He just does the Z pattern across the front.
11:19 He finds...
11:20 Handsome as that guy as he can wear Axe.
11:21 Oh my gosh.
11:22 I'm so fugly.
11:23 I have to wear a creed.
11:24 Cumin spray.
11:25 Okay.
11:26 It's thousands of dollars.
11:27 I had more questions, but I will tell you one more thing before we get off of this.
11:28 I never thought that this would go this way.
11:30 We would start with sushi and end up with the amount of cologne that you wear.
11:34 But there was a fancy guy that I saw and I don't know if he was on Instagram or TikTok
11:36 or something like that.
11:37 But like an old school guy.
11:38 One of those old Cuban dudes that's just like everything's like, he's got the Cuban cigar
11:43 in his front pocket or whatever.
11:45 What this guy will do is he'll spray his cologne on probably similar to the way you do, but
11:49 then he will spray his hankerchief that he keeps in his front pocket with it so that
11:53 when he starts sweating, he's literally wiping the sweat off with the cologne sent on his
12:00 thing or something like that.
12:01 Have you ever gone that route?
12:02 No.
12:03 All right.
12:04 We need to get you a do-rag or something cool like that.
12:06 So if you need to become prison mic or something like that, you got the purple bandana in the
12:09 pocket.
12:10 I'd be the bell of the ball.
12:11 I think we could do this.
12:12 Okay.
12:13 Yeah.
12:14 Oh, well, this is going to be the worst transition of all time.
12:15 I just totally went from Joey's favorite to Joey's least favorite.
12:18 I hope he announces that publicly because it needs to needs to kind of come through.
12:22 Now, we're going to get into Psalm 63.
12:24 So I just wanted to ask this because one of the cool things about this is one, it actually
12:28 is a psalm of David.
12:29 So Adam, in fact, check true, correct, bam.
12:32 But also it says, in mine, it says, I saw him of David when he was in the wilderness
12:36 of Judah.
12:37 Okay.
12:38 So that kind of provides a context.
12:39 So I'm curious for you guys, what is the most breathtaking scene that you've ever seen
12:44 in nature?
12:45 Where's the place?
12:46 Describe the setting.
12:47 How did you get there?
12:48 Like what is the best place that you can think of whenever you were in the wilderness?
12:53 You're like, this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
12:56 That was not in a city.
12:57 You're far from the city lights at this point.
12:59 In Maui, there's a volcano called Hollyakala and you can go up the mountain at like 2 or
13:05 3 a.m.
13:06 And watch the sun rise over the ocean on top of a mountain on a volcano in Hawaiian islands,
13:12 indescribably beautiful, seeing the sun come up over the ocean, the ocean brightening up,
13:17 and then the island starting to brighten up.
13:19 It's amazing.
13:20 Okay.
13:21 Very good.
13:22 What about you guys?
13:23 I want to go.
13:24 I have so many to think about.
13:25 I know it's just tough.
13:26 It's just tough.
13:27 It is tough.
13:28 It is tough.
13:30 I'll go.
13:31 Or to give you all.
13:32 Or go ahead.
13:33 You got yours?
13:34 I mean, I'm just going to say ocean.
13:35 I mean, like I don't, the places I've been mostly is like Florida, but sunset on the ocean
13:39 is awesome.
13:40 I mean, I'm definitely more of a mountain like destination kind of guy, but I can't
13:44 think of the one, one place, right?
13:46 Okay.
13:47 So I'll combine mountains and ocean here.
13:50 So the Fjordlands, which are the north and south island of New Zealand.
13:55 So when you're going from one to the other, or maybe it's the south of the south island
13:58 on the way to Australia, I just forgot.
14:00 I think it's the south of the south island.
14:02 So imagine the Rocky Mountains coming out of the ocean.
14:06 That's what the Fjordlands are like.
14:07 So guys, if y'all ever get an opportunity to cruise New Zealand, it is absolutely stunning.
14:13 And I remember, I remember it being there because I thought my ears were going to break
14:16 off because it was so cold and windy that was the area that we were going through that
14:20 all I wanted was like a beanie and couldn't find one, but there's waterfalls and you can
14:24 go through their own kayaks as well.
14:26 And so because, you know, there's not like ocean waves like knocking you around because
14:30 of all the, like the, you know, the rock formations that are coming out of there.
14:34 But yeah, I would say the Fjordlands south of the south island of New Zealand.
14:38 That would be mine.
14:39 Is that where they filmed the Lord of the Rings?
14:41 They filmed it in New Zealand, but I didn't watch, I watched the first one and then half
14:45 the second one because I was so bored.
14:46 Caleb's like, yeah, they did.
14:48 You watch it.
14:49 Lord of the Rings?
14:50 Yeah.
14:51 Yeah.
14:52 Everybody did.
14:53 Not Kyle.
14:54 I actually fell asleep halfway through the second one.
14:56 I was like, I'm not.
14:57 This is so stupid.
14:58 It's like a damn elf's running around with a stupid ring.
15:00 It's like, we know you're going to throw the ring in the volcano.
15:02 You frickin' nerd.
15:04 You also didn't like the Kevin Costner Western that I told you to watch it.
15:07 You said was terrible.
15:08 Open range.
15:09 You were so wrong about that.
15:10 Oh my God.
15:11 That's what it is.
15:12 We talked about like best Westerns, not hotels like what last week or the week before.
15:16 That is up there with one of the worst dog crap Westerns I've ever watched in my entire
15:21 life.
15:22 We're open range was hot garbage.
15:23 Wrong.
15:24 It's terrible.
15:25 So bad.
15:26 Terrible.
15:27 Okay.
15:28 What?
15:29 I'm with Kyle on this one.
15:30 Oh, no.
15:31 It's so bad.
15:32 You both suck.
15:33 I mean, you compare it to dances with wolves, it sucks.
15:35 I'm not a Kevin Costner fan, so that probably like, you know, kind of ruins it.
15:40 Do you like his baseball movies?
15:41 I hate all of you.
15:42 Pass.
15:43 I just still love the guy.
15:44 How do you not like Kevin Costner?
15:45 I mean, don't hate.
15:46 Are you?
15:47 You're supposed to be an American, man.
15:48 Hey, you know what?
15:49 Chill out, Cologne.
15:50 I can like smell the badness of your arguments from the other side of the table.
15:54 Not this moment.
15:55 Hey, you have to give us.
15:56 You have to give us where the most beautiful thing.
15:58 Where's the most beautiful thing?
15:59 Has it been a wilderness?
16:00 Yes.
16:01 You saw a little boy like come on.
16:02 Have you ever been out in the wilderness?
16:04 Did you ever get a little dirty, a little bit caliced up and then you saw something beautiful?
16:07 Soft little boy.
16:08 Lincoln County.
16:09 Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
16:10 That's right.
16:11 That was a beautiful area.
16:12 Very beautiful.
16:13 I slept in a queen sized bunk bed, though.
16:15 You did.
16:16 No.
16:17 Man, like for me, it's like the Piazza Square in Italy, but that's not the wilderness, man.
16:20 Correct.
16:21 Yeah.
16:22 It's so easy to like understand the parameters.
16:24 I know the parameters, it's just not clean.
16:28 While he's thinking, I haven't, so I went to, I was in the Gulf of Finland, I believe
16:31 it was.
16:32 St. Petersburg, Russia.
16:33 That was amazing.
16:34 That was amazing.
16:35 Okay.
16:36 So we're like, it's the big mansion, St. Petersburg, whatever.
16:39 I can't remember as behind us and then the Gulf of Finland is right in front.
16:43 It was amazing.
16:44 This is an ignorant question, but is there cold there at all times like there's ice and
16:47 snow or no?
16:48 No.
16:49 I mean, I was there in the summer.
16:50 Okay.
16:51 Yeah.
16:52 You know, 60.
16:53 Okay.
16:54 So very cool.
16:55 I would imagine it's very cold in the winter.
16:56 Ryan, give us some, just make up a place.
16:58 I don't even care if you've been there at this point, like just say somewhere that's
17:01 not in a city.
17:02 So I was in the moon and you're inside the moon like this.
17:05 Yeah.
17:06 Like we drilled in there.
17:07 We drilled in there.
17:08 Bruce Willis style.
17:09 Yeah.
17:10 That's right.
17:11 So I was bent out.
17:12 Hey, hey, you got some against Bruce Willis?
17:13 Caleb.
17:14 Good actor.
17:15 Good actor.
17:16 Don't talk about Bruce.
17:17 My wife and I, during our honeymoon, we went to the big island in Hawaii and we were ready
17:22 to jeep and we went like looked at waterfalls and stuff like that went to volcanoes, but
17:27 there's one waterfall that was really nice.
17:29 Like we were out there and it felt like you were like in Jurassic Park and beautiful waterfall.
17:34 So was that so freaking hard, man?
17:36 No, but it wasn't like it wasn't that breathtaking, like sitting there drinking some table line
17:40 at the Piazza and reading a book and watching people.
17:44 You just want to take this entire episode off because we're all going to be reminiscing
17:47 about these beautiful things that God created as opposed to these things that dorky like
17:51 human chimps made.
17:53 God gave them the ideas to make.
17:55 Okay.
17:56 All right.
17:57 We need to get to the scripture for us.
17:58 We lose my mind.
17:59 Adam, if you would read Psalm 63 and then we'll dig in Psalm 63.
18:04 You God are my God earnestly.
18:07 I seek you.
18:08 I thirst for you.
18:09 My whole being long, my whole being longs for you in a dry and parched land where there
18:14 is no water.
18:15 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory because your love
18:20 is better than life.
18:21 My lips will glorify you.
18:23 I will praise you as long as I live and in your name, I will lift up my hands.
18:27 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods with singing lips.
18:31 My mouth will praise you on my bed.
18:34 I remember you.
18:35 I think of you through the watches of the night because you are my help.
18:38 I sing in the shadow of your wings.
18:41 I cling to you, your right hand upholds me.
18:44 Those who want to kill me will be destroyed.
18:46 They will go down to the depths of the earth.
18:49 They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals, but the king will rejoice
18:53 in God.
18:54 All who swear by God will glory in him while the mouths of liars will be silenced.
18:59 Okay.
19:00 Very good.
19:01 And what version of the Bible is this?
19:02 This is an IV.
19:03 An IV.
19:04 Okay.
19:05 Going back to verse one.
19:06 Oh God, you are my God earnestly.
19:07 I seek you.
19:08 My soul thirst for you.
19:09 We've talked about this, at least tangentially in the last couple of weeks, but how often
19:15 do you feel like your soul is thirsting for God?
19:19 Because we talked about scenarios that were bad, you know, Valley of the shadow of the
19:23 death, like really, really bad times for us.
19:26 And that's when our soul thirst for God.
19:28 But it's like, what about when things are going well?
19:31 Like are you thirsting for God when you're well fed, well slept?
19:34 You had sex recently, your jobs going well, like all these things are going your way.
19:38 You're walking on sunshine and you're just having like a great time with your life.
19:41 Are we thirsting?
19:42 Because I'll just be straight up honest about me.
19:44 No, I'm not because I'm fulfilled in all of these earthly, you know, fleshy things,
19:49 if you will.
19:50 I think something that might be relevant would be, let's talk about where David was when
19:56 he was writing this.
19:57 It says he was in the desert of Judah.
19:59 Well, what had just happened?
20:01 He was escaping his son, Absalom, right?
20:05 So David's first son, Abnon, Abnon, am I saying that right?
20:10 Abnon?
20:11 Absalom was his first son.
20:15 No, Amnon was his first son because I think and then Absalom and Tamar were brother and
20:20 sister and Absalom and Tamar were from another mother and Amnon was David's first son.
20:28 Okay.
20:29 So what I believe happened was Amnon, he raped Tamar, right?
20:36 And obviously that [inaudible] off Absalom and David does nothing about it.
20:40 Well, what does that sound like?
20:41 David goes and sleeps with Bathsheba and has a man killed, right?
20:45 So years later, Absalom decides I'm going to go kill Amnon and that's what happens, kills
20:51 David's first son.
20:53 Absalom then revolts against David and David has to flee.
20:56 David flees the city.
20:57 So multiple layers of sin here, David obviously had a man killed so he could sleep with Bathsheba.
21:04 Then his son, his own son sleeps and rapes his sister, half sister.
21:10 And then David's other son kills David's other brother forces David to go into exile.
21:17 So all of those horrible, terrible things are happening.
21:19 And then David goes into the wilderness and now he's writing the song.
21:23 That's crazy.
21:24 And it's really an incredible part of the Psalm is that that's when he's writing this, right?
21:29 So yeah, he's absolutely in the depths of despair really at this point.
21:34 And I mean, I should know about you guys, but that's the one thing I notice here is even
21:39 though he's lamenting and having some negative things, like do we still thirst for God when
21:44 things are going positive?
21:45 I know you bring up a good point because every time you read one of these Psalms, he's lamenting
21:49 because he's going through something tough, you know, and it's like, have I ever, like
21:54 it made me think, have I ever, like, was I ever seeking God when things were good?
22:00 Do we only seek him when it's bad?
22:02 And it's like, I think I seek him more when things aren't going good because he's not
22:08 needed when things are going good, you know, but we should thirst for him and pant for
22:14 him.
22:15 I mean, it's not there's no doubt when things are good, that's not on my mind.
22:20 Yeah.
22:21 It's I mean, I think there's a bit of a difference, meaning just like for me personally, like
22:26 I'll seek him almost more out of obedience, right, more out of like, I know this is what
22:30 I need to do.
22:31 So I'm going to do it when things are good.
22:33 And then when things are bad, that's where I would say I'm thirsting, right?
22:36 That's where you just realize like, there's nothing I can do here.
22:39 I mean, my default is always to go to like, I can solve this problem, right?
22:43 But then when you realize you can't, then it's like, okay, that's when I'm really thirsting.
22:48 But the other thing to look at too is if my seeking, you know, John MacArthur brings
22:51 up, you know, that he's seeking counsel.
22:54 So I can tell you there's times where I'm going through life that just going through
22:57 life itself that I seek God's counsel, but I don't feel like we seek him or we pour out
23:02 to him as much as if we're thirsting for him going through turmoil, then we are just trying
23:07 to seek everyday counsel.
23:08 Just think about it, like when you're hydrated, you're not thinking about being dehydrated
23:15 because you're not dehydrated, but when you are legitimately dehydrated and you're not
23:19 near, you know, water or some sort of hydration drink or something like that, like that's,
23:24 that's rough.
23:25 And it's like, I don't know if any of y'all have ever been in like in a scary dehydration
23:29 scenario.
23:30 I haven't, I've been pretty lucky to make sure I have all my materials when I need to.
23:35 But man, when you're dehydrated, it's hard to think about anything else other than getting,
23:40 getting some hydration.
23:41 And I mean, I don't know if you've been in some situations like we'll go ahead, go
23:43 ahead.
23:44 You were there.
23:45 You were going down the mountain with me when we were hunting elk and I took you down the
23:48 mountain late at night and it was dark and you started crying in the fetal position.
23:53 You don't remember this?
23:54 And you were like, Adam, Adam, I'm out of water.
23:56 I mean, I wasn't out of water.
23:57 You said you were out of water and you were worried.
23:59 I was probably facing it.
24:00 Was he blubbering?
24:01 Yes.
24:02 I didn't tell you that so you could throw him back on my face later, cologne man.
24:05 I was enjoying this beautiful landscape and this lesson that we were about to learn about
24:09 walking through bear country and making sure that we were trying to be careful and enjoying
24:13 God's creation and Kyle's over here in the fetal position crying because he's out of
24:17 water.
24:18 Literally none of that happened.
24:19 And he's having to go through brush and it's a little scary.
24:21 No.
24:22 Yes.
24:23 It was true.
24:24 It was sketchy.
24:25 There was no fetal position.
24:26 There was no crying.
24:27 And I had water and I had jocko hydration packets.
24:28 Okay.
24:29 So boom, roasted.
24:30 I had all that type of stuff.
24:31 It was the bottom of there.
24:32 I was pretty wiped out.
24:33 Yeah.
24:34 Like the next day.
24:35 When you get mad, you get quiet.
24:36 You stop talking.
24:37 That's actually very true.
24:38 Or the exact opposite where it's like, it's like, I got like, let's, let's, let's, let's
24:43 be quiet now.
24:44 But yeah, that, that would have been another time where it's like, you're so gassed and
24:47 then you get down to the bottom and then like, it was still kind of like a dramatic trip.
24:50 We had a lot of trips up and down the mountain that were not fruitful.
24:53 And so it's like, you're physically exhausted.
24:56 You've been walking around all day like when you're doing mountain hunting, you can't eat
25:00 enough calories.
25:01 You could eat concrete and you would still like be hungry by the time you get back to
25:04 camp.
25:05 But, you know, everybody's doing better, you know, whatever.
25:07 Somebody's got something down.
25:08 And at that point, it's like the last second to last night or something like that, no one
25:12 had gotten anything down that we were going to be able to keep and take home with us.
25:15 And so that was not a good situation.
25:17 But for the record guys, no, I was not in tears.
25:19 Adam is a liar.
25:20 And if you take anything he says seriously for the next 25 to 35 minutes, that's on you.
25:24 I don't know what to tell you.
25:25 But here's a cool thing about verse two.
25:27 So verse two, so I have looked upon you in the sanctuary by holding your power and your
25:32 glory.
25:34 When I was reading that in preparation for this, we were having a bunch of tornadoes here
25:39 in this area in Oklahoma.
25:41 And you know, by the time you guys are listening to this, we will probably be out of our normal
25:45 like season, but we had the town of sulfur, Oklahoma, which was basically completely destroyed
25:51 by tornado.
25:52 There was another one.
25:53 I can't remember the name of it.
25:54 I had never heard of the name of the town before that got completely destroyed directly
25:58 hit.
25:59 And this was in the middle of the night.
26:00 And natural disasters and landscapes, I can never feel more powerless or more small.
26:10 So so when you're when you're looking at a tornado or hurricane or some sort of a natural
26:15 disaster and you realize there's nothing I could have done, like my my electric vehicle
26:20 could not have stopped, you know, the global warming that caused this hurricane or whatever
26:24 people believe or something like that.
26:26 But then also when you see that landscape.
26:28 So for for Ryan, it's like when he's at Dillard's and he sees all the coal and it's that beautiful
26:33 landscape.
26:34 And then for Adam, it's, you know, when he's at the top of a mountain, actually about to
26:37 kill an animal or something like that.
26:39 But like you see that moment and you're just like, gosh, I'm so small and so pathetic.
26:45 Look at what I'm seeing right now.
26:46 So that's the thing.
26:47 It was very appropriate because there was just there was a lot of suffering happening
26:50 in Oklahoma around the time I was studying this 63rd Psalm because of natural disasters.
26:56 I looked at that versus so I've looked upon you in my sanctuary, beholding your power
27:00 and glory.
27:02 When they would back in the day, go by and worship God.
27:06 They did it within the temple where the the arc was and that was the sanctuary around that
27:13 area.
27:14 And that's where they would worship.
27:15 Because of Christ the sanctuary is within us.
27:18 And so now we can, you know, we have a direct line to God.
27:21 So we're able to worship and behold his power with internally.
27:26 Absolutely.
27:27 All right.
27:28 Before we move on, just wanted to remind you guys, if you want to start your own forging
27:31 table, a lot of you guys have reached out.
27:32 Hey, what resources, what type of Bible, all those things we have partnered with Crossway
27:36 to get you guys a forging table starter set.
27:38 It is five amazing books.
27:40 There's a Bible in there.
27:41 There's a devotional, a journal, some other books, and you can get all those books for
27:44 50% off all that information is in the show notes.
27:46 And if you literally want to take your Bible study to the next step to the next level,
27:50 you've got to get the Logos Bible software.
27:52 There is no more powerful Bible software on planet Earth than what Logos has created
27:57 and continues to create.
27:59 So you've heard us talk about, you know, Moody commentary and MacArthur commentary and all
28:02 these different commentaries.
28:03 Those commentaries are on there.
28:05 There's all types of different studies you can do and you can get all that software at
28:08 a tremendous discount if you use the link that is in the show notes for this episode.
28:12 So go there and check that out.
28:14 I wanted to talk about verses three and four.
28:16 So because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
28:20 So I will bless you as long as I live in your name, I will lift up my hands.
28:24 And so in verse three, when it's talking about your steadfast love is better than life.
28:30 I don't know that we live that way.
28:32 I just flat out like I'm not exactly going out on a limb here, but you've heard me say
28:35 before, why do people not read the Bible?
28:37 It's because they don't actually believe it's the word of God.
28:40 Because if you did, if you honestly believe the creator God of the cosmos wrote a book
28:46 through man to give to us, we would read it.
28:49 We would study it.
28:50 We would study it in groups.
28:51 We would do everything we could to squeeze out as much meaning from these pages as possible.
28:56 But we just flat out don't do it.
28:58 But in the same moment, I don't think that even many Christians think that the steadfast
29:02 love of God is better than life, especially, you know, in communities of affluence where
29:07 you have a lot of people like, man, they've got jet skis and they go on vacations and they've
29:11 got toys and they've got, you know, cars that they just drive around on the weekends, you
29:14 know, like, you know, just stuff like that.
29:17 It's kind of hard to, you know, when you're not praying, give us a stare daily bread.
29:21 It's kind of hard to look at your life and be like, man, God's steadfast love is better
29:25 than this.
29:26 You know what I mean?
29:27 Well, we got to look at that.
29:28 I think there was a message I think Piper had like a sermon, John Piper had in regards
29:31 to this verse and just pointed out how David wanted God more than life itself.
29:37 And like we're talking about King David, like he had everything, basically, and he still
29:41 wanted God more than life itself.
29:44 And like you bring up a good point, like we're going through life and we like all these expenditures
29:49 that life gives us like cologne, you know, or exactly, which is what everyone thought
29:53 of immediately when I was talking about that expensive cologne, expensive colognes or deer
29:58 meat.
29:59 You know, I don't know or bad sushi.
30:01 So we've covered all the bases at the table, but no, but like, you know, Piper, Piper talked
30:06 about food, friendship, sexual relations, all that stuff.
30:09 Like we put all these things up on a pedestal more than we put God and David who has everything
30:15 at this.
30:16 At this point, he doesn't have everything.
30:17 He's lost everything, but he's had everything and he still wants to put God first.
30:22 And so I think that's something that that you really see within the steadfast love is
30:26 better than life.
30:27 I wonder how much time has transpired from what I kind of set this up of with his sons
30:31 and his daughter with the rape, getting raped and then he gets exiled and he's gone.
30:37 How much time has transpired until he got to this thought?
30:40 Because for me, if I had gone through that and my first son had just been murdered by
30:44 my other son, one of my daughters had been raped.
30:46 And then my son kicks me out of my palace.
30:50 Verse four is not what I'm going to be thinking of first, you know, maybe at some point, but
30:54 not right out of the gate, you know, I will praise you as long as I live and in your name,
30:58 I will lift you up in my hands right after my son has been murdered.
31:02 My daughter has been raped and my other son kicked me out of my palace.
31:05 That's pretty incredible.
31:06 Right.
31:07 The level.
31:08 Yeah.
31:09 I mean, considering the whole situation, like the level of adoration that he shows, I mean,
31:12 like if I think about, you know, you look at Psalms as kind of, I mean, it's a lot of
31:15 prayers, right?
31:16 And kind of a model for prayer and the way that I pray, unfortunately, like it seems
31:21 to me like that's the one that I struggle with the most is like just, you know, heaping
31:26 the adoration onto God when I pray, but this is like, he's just flowing, you know, I mean,
31:32 it's just so much that it's, it stands out and especially considering the situation you're
31:37 talking about.
31:38 I also wanted to throw out there.
31:40 So maybe this isn't like important enough to talk about, but I, people do honestly get
31:44 consternation about this.
31:45 So the end of verse four in your name, I will lift up my hands.
31:49 So lifting your hands during worship.
31:51 Okay.
31:52 So the church that we all go to, not real hand lifting, right?
31:56 It's pretty, it's pretty down the, down the fairway in terms of the worship, like it's
32:00 not going to blow your socks off, but it's not terrible either.
32:03 Not real hand waving, no tambourines, like none of no people running up and down the
32:07 aisles, right?
32:08 If that's your thing, that's your thing.
32:09 I'd, you know, whatever, but I will say for me personally, hand raising during worship
32:14 has always felt strange to me, not for anybody else to do it, for me to do it.
32:19 It almost always felt performative for me.
32:22 I remember being at, oh goodness, there was a church camp out in New Mexico.
32:29 I can't remember the name of it anyway, but it was like a college camp, but like you got
32:32 to go if you were in like high school too, as well.
32:34 And so we went out to it and Charlie Hall was a big deal at the time and he was doing worship
32:40 every night.
32:41 And so he, Charlie Hall has a song called Sweet Me Away, which is just, you know, a tremendous
32:46 like it's a, it's a power ballad, you know, of a worship song.
32:50 And I remember thinking, okay, he's going to be playing every night for five nights while
32:54 we're, while we're here at this thing.
32:56 And so, you know, when he plays Sweet Me Away, that's when I'm going to lift my hands, right?
33:00 And I remember he played Sweet Me Away and I like closed my eyes and lifted my hands
33:03 and it's like I wanted to feel what all these people had been feeling, apparently the entire
33:07 time and the entire thing just felt very strange to me.
33:10 I felt like I was performing for the people around me to show them how much I liked the
33:14 song as opposed to praising the God of universe.
33:17 So I don't know what it's like for you guys because like, I don't, I'm not critical of
33:20 people that raised their hands during worship.
33:22 Like if that's what they honestly feel that they should be doing and that's how they get
33:25 closer to God and all that.
33:26 Like, dude, I'm all for it.
33:27 Do it.
33:28 And some people come from a background in a tradition where there's a ton of that, but
33:31 then like if you come from a incredibly conservative tradition or no tradition of church at all,
33:36 the hand waving and all the, all the jumping up and down just kind of seems funny.
33:40 Ron and I are pretty similar in this because we both were raised in charismatic churches.
33:44 So that's very normal.
33:45 You know, I was used to seeing the hand raising.
33:47 I raised my hands and all of the things that go with that was just felt normal.
33:51 But every time I brought a friend or something, it felt they were like all said in a war,
33:55 aware of it.
33:56 Yeah.
33:57 That's pretty, it's pretty tame compared to when they start speaking in tongues and your
33:59 friends and all that too.
34:00 But I mean, when David's talking about lifting his hands, you know, to give a little historical
34:06 background when they lifted up their hands, they was in the sent to the prayer to God.
34:10 And then it was also they left their hands up to receive whatever God was going to receive.
34:14 So it was more of a, what do you want to call it?
34:16 Like a traditional thing.
34:18 It wasn't more of like what we kind of grew up with of being like a spiritual charismatic
34:22 thing.
34:24 So are you, are only good Christians the one that raised their hands during worship?
34:28 Because I've been told by a worship leader in Oakland city that I'm probably not saved
34:31 because I don't like contemporary Christian music.
34:33 And so if he ever saw me not raising my hands in worship, he was probably thinking that
34:38 I'm also worshiping the devil for real.
34:40 The fact 100% for wear an affliction shirt and skinny jeans and white shoes and spiky
34:47 hair.
34:48 No, literally I'm having lunch with this guy.
34:49 And you know, I was just kind of casually talking about, yeah, I'm, because he is a worship
34:52 leader and he goes to a church that's not, I don't know that it would be charismatic,
34:55 but it's more charismatic than faith Bible in edman, Oklahoma.
34:58 And like I was just like, yeah, I mean, I just can't, I just don't really like any of
35:01 that music.
35:02 Like the sound it makes when it hits my ear, right?
35:04 And when it attaches to thoughts in my brain, I just don't like it.
35:07 And he, no kidding, like looked at me and said, man, I'm not sure you're saved.
35:11 That's how you really feel.
35:12 I thought he was kidding.
35:13 Right.
35:14 I thought he was kidding.
35:15 So I just started laughing.
35:16 And he looked at me like with this really concerned looking on his face, I'm like, Oh,
35:18 are you serious?
35:19 You're getting judged by a guy and I was like, Hey, bro, I don't think you are qualified
35:24 to make that judgment as to whether or not I have put my faith in, in Christ for the
35:29 payment of my sin debt.
35:30 Because I think Hillsong sucks.
35:32 It's like really?
35:33 Like, what is wrong with you?
35:34 Be like, it's called a sermon, bro.
35:36 Like good.
35:37 Contemporary Christian music is like, I'm sorry, I don't want to dog on it.
35:41 But like, dude, it's so like theologically bad.
35:45 It can be.
35:46 It can be there.
35:47 Not awesome.
35:48 There's Shane and Shane.
35:49 Right.
35:50 There's Shane and Shane.
35:51 And there's.
35:52 And then is that where the list ends?
35:53 Okay.
35:54 So here's my list.
35:55 It's Shane and Shane, Phil Wickham and the ultra music.
35:59 And so Phil Wickham does kind of get way into the pop space.
36:02 It's real Cynthia and all those types of things.
36:04 But I've heard I have it on good authority that he will write lyrics and then submit those
36:08 lyrics to theologians and to make sure, Hey, this makes sense to my artistic brain.
36:14 But I know I'm more artistic and I don't want to, you know, say something like God's love
36:18 is reckless or something like that.
36:19 I'm sure the list is longer than that.
36:21 Probably not.
36:22 What about DC?
36:23 What about DC talk?
36:24 Newsboys.
36:25 Kevin Max.
36:26 Carmen.
36:27 Carmen.
36:28 There we go.
36:29 You don't know who Carmen is?
36:30 Like he's the original white rapper.
36:31 You don't know who that is.
36:33 I became a Christian in like 2000 and like, you don't question Eminem, dude.
36:39 Look him up.
36:40 Look at us.
36:41 I can't listen.
36:42 I can't do it.
36:43 There's no names.
36:44 No, they're hilarious.
36:45 No, we're not.
36:46 We're not doing this.
36:47 We're on the same time.
36:48 Carmen's fire.
36:49 Dude, Carmen's legit.
36:50 He had the legit music.
36:51 See, I went straight from Christian right into Christian metal.
36:54 And so it's like I skipped like I don't like I had heard of newsboys and DC talk and
36:58 Jesus freaking all this stuff, but like I never like listened to it.
37:01 I go wasn't ever in my will house.
37:03 I will say like Toby Mac is legit.
37:04 Like that guy practices what he preaches and like, I just watched an interview with him
37:09 about the death of his son and like, he said something where he was like, man, he goes,
37:14 I was so hurt when it comes to what happened.
37:17 And I like, he's like, I just told God I'm going to give him another chance.
37:21 He goes, that sounds really sacrilegious.
37:22 I know it does.
37:23 Like he's.
37:24 He was just being honest and he goes, man, he was so kind.
37:28 He was so kind.
37:29 And I'm like, dude, my heart like my heart breaks for Toby Mac because like his heart
37:33 is real.
37:34 And like that's the thing about DC talk like I do my heart breaks for Kevin Max because
37:38 that guy is an ex vangelical who's gone off the deep end, but you still got guys like
37:43 Toby Mac and Michael Tate that are just still killing it out there.
37:46 So let's go back to Carmen.
37:47 So he's like, he's just this fire rapper, this fire Christian rapper white guy.
37:52 I listened to his music in 25 years, but he's like spoken word.
37:56 I would.
37:57 But like we joke that he was like the first Christian rapper.
37:59 Okay.
38:00 This is good.
38:01 Look it up.
38:02 More theologically astute than LaCray doesn't take much.
38:04 I'll just say that.
38:05 Yeah.
38:06 Take a whole lot, but I think he actually didn't do communion with a piece of bread and apple
38:09 juice.
38:10 So okay.
38:11 Thank we're good.
38:12 Very good.
38:13 Well, okay.
38:14 Now that we've got, we've opened this up.
38:15 We can always, you know, to go back from this, but like, are there any other groups that
38:18 you know of or because I get asked about worship music all the time because it's like, Hey,
38:21 I can give you a bunch of metal bands, but some of these metal band guys have deconstructed
38:25 or never were Christians to begin with or something like that.
38:27 So it's just like any other genre.
38:29 But again, for me, it's like the music I can listen to without problems are the chain and
38:34 chain original.
38:35 So when they cover, they've covered a million different worship songs, but like all their
38:39 originals that they write, the Phil Wickham stuff that he writes.
38:41 And then the altar music, which is Mattie Montgomery's church, they, they've got a couple, they've
38:46 got an album and a couple of singles worth of stuff out there, but it's just like dripping
38:49 in theology.
38:50 What do you think about third day?
38:52 Uh, never listened to them.
38:54 I heard of them, but that's the MacPow guy.
38:56 Yeah.
38:57 That the guy.
38:58 Yeah.
38:59 Okay.
39:00 Third day is good.
39:01 Um, sovereign grace is a good one.
39:02 Um, the Getty's.
39:03 I don't know if they're, they're, you're looking for more metal.
39:05 No, I'm looking for whatever, because I don't care what type of genre, so it could be hip
39:09 hop.
39:10 It could be like country guy.
39:11 I don't, I don't care.
39:12 I'm trying to because I think the altar music's like bluegrass.
39:14 I mean, I like, uh, uh, what's Kerry Job's husband's name?
39:18 Cody Carnes.
39:19 No.
39:20 No.
39:21 Cody Carnes.
39:22 Mr. Joe.
39:23 Uh, no.
39:24 Uh, Cody Carnes has got some pretty legit stuff.
39:25 Um, even his stuff that he did with verdicts church, the blessing, like pretty legit song,
39:30 even verdicts church, their, their worship is more theologically sound than his preaching.
39:35 Oh, uh, I don't know, I don't know much about much of his music, but Brandon Lake seems
39:39 to be like, uh, cause he's done some stuff with, with elevations worship thing that that
39:44 dude can like sing his butt off.
39:46 I mean, I don't know by, I agree with like, so I got convicted, listening to ask a pastor
39:51 with Joby when he asked him my question about CCM and jazz and with, uh, Shane and chain
39:58 thing.
39:59 And I was like, man, as long as the music is theologically correct, great.
40:03 And I love the fact that he'll go through and he'll look at it or his team will look
40:05 at it.
40:06 And there's something that's not theologically correct.
40:08 They've changed it.
40:09 Yeah.
40:10 And it's like that's freaking awesome.
40:11 Like that is shepherding and discipleship.
40:13 Yeah.
40:14 So there's, there's probably a lot of Christian artists too that are like, it's milk, right?
40:19 I mean, it may not be like the most robust, you know, sermon you've ever heard, but it
40:25 doesn't mean there are heretics, right?
40:27 No, but when you have the milk though, like what's her name that's really popular right
40:31 now?
40:32 Taylor Swift.
40:33 No, not Taylor Swift.
40:34 I just thought you know, since you went to her concerts and I had to do that for work, had
40:37 to do it.
40:38 Had to do it.
40:39 I had to do it.
40:40 What kind of cologne did you wear to that concert?
40:41 Oh man.
40:42 Curve.
40:43 I was, I can't remember.
40:45 He would lower himself to wearing $50 cologne, but anyway, I do, I wear, I wear $50 cologne
40:50 too.
40:51 We were not opening up the cologne thing again.
40:53 We got to go back.
40:54 Yeah, no, but, but the thing is like, what's, what's the girl that's contemporary Christian
40:58 music's like golden child right now?
41:00 Anyone?
41:01 Anyone?
41:02 Anyone?
41:03 Let's see.
41:04 Do a ton of Christian music.
41:05 But like everybody listens to her music and they all talk about it, but then she's asked
41:10 the tough questions and like about like homosexuality and marriage.
41:15 And she's like, well, I don't know.
41:16 I don't know what the Bible says on that.
41:17 Like, yeah, like, and like this is the people that you're bringing up into the CCM industry.
41:23 And then they're, they're like, they can't, they can't do the hard stuff, you know?
41:27 And it's just like, that's what, that's where we like, oh man, what was the, I mean, I think
41:33 that's a lot.
41:34 That's fair, a lot more fair to kind of criticize that.
41:37 Yeah.
41:38 And in my opinion, there are lyrics of like, because it could be relevant to wherever they
41:45 are in their walk.
41:46 You know what I'm saying?
41:47 Like it doesn't necessarily have to be.
41:49 I mean, not that it's, it can't be false, like false teaching, of course, but it's not
41:55 going to be as robust of a song is like chain of chain.
41:58 It's just not.
41:59 I mean, when you're in the pub, when you're in the pub, I like that, do you have to always
42:02 applying on that kind of issue?
42:03 You know, it seems like we're coming down on her because she didn't give her, her opinion
42:09 on that issue.
42:10 And maybe she has an opinion and maybe it is theologically sound, but maybe she also knows.
42:14 She flat out said, I don't, I don't know what the Bible says.
42:17 Like that's not my Bible.
42:18 It's Lauren Nagle.
42:19 That's who it is.
42:20 Okay.
42:21 Lauren Nagle.
42:22 Like she might.
42:23 And the thing is there's one thing about if she had offered up that opinion and nobody
42:25 was talking about it, but when you're asked a direct question and you give a response like
42:29 that, it's like, come on, but you obviously can understand when you're, when you're in
42:32 the public eye like that, there's certain things that you may or may not want to take
42:35 a position on for obvious financial reasons, right?
42:38 So my question, I'm throwing this out at the table.
42:41 Is it okay for her to just punt and say, I'm not going to discuss that.
42:46 Maybe that's not the way she answered it.
42:48 Yeah.
42:49 But is it okay for her to say that?
42:50 Or does she have to give her opinion because if she takes a side, she's going to be potentially
42:55 financially hurt.
42:57 She's in the industry.
42:58 Like what financial, yeah, you're going to lose.
43:01 You're going to lose a secular crowd, but it's going to be an impact for sure.
43:08 If you're saying like, I don't know what the Bible teaches on, you know, the third and
43:11 fourth and fifth genders, like, come on.
43:14 You know what I mean?
43:15 Yeah.
43:16 It was such a softball question.
43:17 So it's like, so I go back to when Carl Lynch was on the view and he was asked about, he
43:22 was asked about gay marriage.
43:24 So it was the view and he did interview with Katie Kirk all around the same time.
43:27 So he was asked about abortion and he was asked about gay marriage and he refused to say that
43:30 abortion was a sin and that it was a murder and he refused to even address the gay marriage
43:34 issue.
43:35 He just said, you know what, you know, I just, I would want to sit down with those couples
43:38 and I would want to hear about their story.
43:40 And you know, like, you know, there's certain things that are cut and dry and then there's
43:43 other things that just come down to people's stories.
43:45 And it was, he got claps from all the dumb seals in the crowd at the view, but it's like,
43:50 how hard is it to be like, yeah, the Bible is actually pretty clear that we're not, we're
43:54 not supposed to kill innocent human beings and, you know, what's growing inside of the
43:57 womb of a woman as an innocent human being, like, by any measure and by.
44:01 So that's the thing is to where it's like, no, you don't need to be giving a, you know,
44:06 you don't need to be giving a sermon on a particular scripture that's maybe hard to
44:09 understand, but on these softball issues, it's just like, all you have to do is smack
44:13 the ball.
44:14 Like just do it.
44:15 Now, obviously I think Ryan actually makes a very astute point to where it's like the
44:18 crowd you're going to lose is the squishy Christian crowd and the secular crowd, because
44:22 a lot of these people when they, when they move kind of be on CCM, so like the cray kind
44:27 of got bigger than Christian rap there for a little bit.
44:29 And, you know, this, this gal, like they always talk about crossover success.
44:33 Wasn't it so interesting when they cross over, they talk about the cross, the gospel
44:37 and Jesus, a whole heck of a lot less and the power of God, it becomes like when people
44:41 get a Grammy and like, I just want to thank God, they never say Jesus though, like, because
44:45 the name of Jesus starts separating people into categories where if you say God, it's
44:48 like, yeah, whatever God means to you, you know what I mean?
44:50 But when it comes to her, like, everybody was upset, she went on on to generous this
44:53 show.
44:54 Like, I wasn't one of those people that would be upset.
44:56 Like, I kind of am in the camp like, hey, if you can go on a secular show and you can
45:00 sing worship music to somebody who may be, you know, leaving living a sinful lifestyle,
45:05 by all means go do it.
45:06 100%.
45:07 But she was asked the question, do you think homosexuality is a sin and she would not say
45:11 it was sin.
45:12 Well, that's the thing in one of those moments, like, I, so what I train people to do on the
45:15 pro-life issue is it's like, stop saying that I believe life begins a conception.
45:21 Because when you say that, you are seeding ground to the middle right from the beginning
45:25 because it makes it sound like your position is an opinion.
45:28 It's like, it's not, I think life begins a conception, it's that we know that life begins
45:32 a conception because if we can't start from a foundation of truth, the amount of fruit
45:36 that's going to come from this conversation is going to be incredibly minuscule if exist
45:40 in it all.
45:41 And the same thing in a situation like that to where it's like, well, you know, it's
45:44 not, it's not my opinion.
45:45 Right.
45:46 So you might get mad at the vessel for giving you the message of the messenger, but it's
45:50 like, obviously this is an abominable thing and if culture were to follow the dictates
45:54 of that lifestyle, culture would seek to exist.
45:57 So if you look at it sociologically, human civilization would go to crap if everybody
46:02 became homosexual.
46:03 Right.
46:04 So boom, there's your sociological data, but then we can go back and appeal to the word
46:08 of God and say like, this is not what we have for you.
46:10 Like it's, this does not lead to human flourishing.
46:13 Yeah. And so there's a way to say that where you don't come off sounding harsh and like
46:16 a jerk, but.
46:17 Right.
46:18 And if your worship music is so deep and so biblical, like you can honor, you could, she
46:21 could answer that question with, well, obviously the Bible says that, you know, homosexuality
46:25 is a sin and she could just leave it at that and move on, but she's not going to say that
46:30 because she wants to hit that secular crowd.
46:31 And I think it's easier not to defend, not to defend her, but I can't imagine if I was
46:36 in that position and I realized the words that I say and the impact that it could have
46:39 on me financially, it might be difficult to come out and say those kinds of things.
46:42 So I'm not defending her and I have no idea what her position is and I don't even know
46:46 who this person is we're talking about, but still in that position, in that chair, when
46:51 all of the eyes are, when all of the eyes are on you, and especially if she wasn't prepared
46:54 for that question, she wasn't prepared to answer that or go through it, I could imagine
46:57 it being difficult to.
46:58 But it's also like Joel seen on Larry King, like he was specifically asked, is believing
47:04 in Christ.
47:05 Yeah.
47:06 Is believing in Christ, the only way to heaven, he couldn't answer.
47:08 He's a pastor.
47:09 That was tough.
47:10 He's going to be in the contemporary Christian music industry.
47:14 You should know who and what you're seeing me about.
47:17 I mean, I think that got loud.
47:19 I'm sorry.
47:20 Too.
47:21 We can hear you.
47:22 We can hear you.
47:23 For someone to say.
47:24 Is he always saved?
47:25 Those are the questions you have to anticipate.
47:27 You have to pre-decide, you know, I mean, you just, I know you've probably thought about
47:31 this as a business owner, right, that you're like, if someone asked me where my business
47:35 stands on whatever, right, one, I think that's a hilarious question because I would just
47:40 be like, why don't you ask my business, why don't you ask it?
47:43 It's right here.
47:44 Yeah.
47:45 Just ask it.
47:46 Yeah.
47:47 You know, so that I think is dumb.
47:48 But those are the things that they're just so obvious that it's like, just decide, say
47:52 it with love.
47:53 I mean, because you can say the same thing.
47:54 Like you can say, I think it's super clear that the Bible says this about it, but I want
47:58 you to know that I love you.
48:00 Jesus loves you.
48:01 Like, say whatever you want to say after that and just speak truth.
48:05 Well, and also every time we're asked a direct question, unless we're kind of like a slimy
48:09 politician or a PR representative, we typically like to respond with as straightforward of
48:14 an answer as possible without splitting the baby.
48:17 But like there are opera, there are times in the gospels where we see what Jesus was
48:20 asked a direct question and he responded with what a question, right?
48:24 He would question them back.
48:25 And then when he would get a sense of we already knew what the heart was behind their original
48:29 question, he's like, yeah, I'm not going to answer your question.
48:32 And so like I've been there before.
48:34 So if someone's because again, because of what we do with the podcast and some of the
48:37 public statements I make about some very, very incendiary topics, every now and then you'll
48:41 get somebody that is obviously asking you a trap question.
48:44 And if you ask a question back to them, so if someone's like, you know, what about, you
48:49 know, if they just go straight to the jugular argument for abortion, well, what if it's
48:53 a 14 year old that was raped by her uncle?
48:56 And I'm like, and if you ask the question, you know, this is what Ben Shapiro did at a
48:59 thing, he's like, okay.
49:01 So if if I were willing to speak with you about what to do in that situation, would
49:04 you then stipulate that the 99 plus percent of other abortions that don't take place for
49:10 that purpose should be illegal and are inherently immoral?
49:13 Well, no, I don't see seed ground for that then it's like, well, then we're not going
49:17 to engage in this conversation right now because you're not coming into it with intellectual
49:20 honesty.
49:21 You were trying to trap me by saying I would torture a 14 year old girl and force her to
49:26 be pregnant in all those different situations.
49:28 It's like I'm not going to meet you on that battlefield because you're not asking the
49:32 question that's coming out of your face, you're asking another question.
49:35 And so there's a way to handle that as well where you're answering the question by saying
49:38 what you're doing right now is foolish and I'm not going to play your game.
49:41 And so you could do it that way.
49:43 She totally could have been like, what does the Bible say?
49:45 And let it at that, you know, because that's something Christ would have done.
49:48 He's like, well, what is it?
49:49 What does it?
49:50 Yeah.
49:51 And the person that asked her is, it's probably one of those people that's never read the
49:52 Bible, but says, I thought God is a God of love and that love is love.
49:56 And if somebody loves somebody that isn't that the ultimate ethic and it's like, where
49:59 did you get that idea?
50:00 That's not a biblical thing.
50:02 It's kind of like tolerance.
50:03 Tolerance is not a biblical ideology.
50:05 This idea that we're supposed to tolerate people's sin, that we're supposed to use pronoun
50:08 hospitality so that people that identify as the opposite sex or as a furry or something
50:12 like that so that they don't feel bad, it's like, well, guess what?
50:15 If one of y'all's kids comes over to my house and they claim to be a furry, I'm not going
50:19 to put their meal on the floor so that they can eat it or I am just to embarrass them.
50:23 It's like, hey, get out of your stupid cat, go eat your stupid food over there and go
50:26 crap in the sand in the corner.
50:28 Like, you know, at that point, just like make fun of the whole thing.
50:31 So don't bring your stupid furry kids to my house is what I'm saying.
50:33 If my kids are furry, I'm bringing it over to this house and you just shame him.
50:37 Just to see shame would be all over that kid.
50:40 Well, hey, we only got to maybe about 10 more minutes here.
50:42 So let's dig into these last couple of chunks here.
50:44 So versus five through eight, my soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food and
50:49 my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.
50:52 And when I remember you upon my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night for you
50:56 have been my help and in the shadow of your wings, I will sing for joy.
50:59 My soul clings to you.
51:01 Your right hand upholds me.
51:02 So there's a lot of good deep theological stuff, but I just want to point something out
51:04 here from the beginning when it says my soul will be satisfied with fat and rich food.
51:08 He's not talking about that stupid sound that you put in my refrigerator.
51:11 All right.
51:12 He does not mentioning veggies there.
51:13 He's mentioning prime rib.
51:14 That's what he's mentioning.
51:15 He's mentioning brisket.
51:16 He's mentioning filet wrapped in bacon.
51:19 That's what he's mentioning there.
51:20 I know.
51:21 So why in the world did you bring that nonsense to his house because it's fiber, man, I'm
51:24 trying to lose weight.
51:25 It also specifically says Turkey and not him.
51:28 Okay.
51:29 All right.
51:30 So who?
51:31 Okay.
51:32 Team Ham.
51:33 Raise your hand.
51:34 Team Ham.
51:35 Raise your hand.
51:36 We have two turkeys versus two hands.
51:37 You shouldn't know me.
51:38 He likes crappy sushi.
51:39 Hey, love your team Turkey over Team Ham.
51:40 I'm I'm done.
51:41 No, no, no, no.
51:42 No, he said he's torn.
51:43 He says torn.
51:44 Oh, come on.
51:45 So the reason I'm torn is because of my upbringing or we didn't eat.
51:49 You're abused.
51:50 Oh, so I want to eat for anyone that doesn't know Caleb used to be in a cold.
51:54 It was super awesome.
51:55 Go back to his first couple of appearances.
51:56 I didn't know you didn't eat.
51:58 So you followed the clean and unclean.
52:01 A lot was about 15.
52:02 We never ate anything.
52:04 No pork.
52:05 So now that's never heard about Peter's dream.
52:07 Did you?
52:08 No, they kept that away from you.
52:09 Rice, kill any baby, rise, kill any.
52:12 So I have to ask this now.
52:13 What was it like?
52:14 First time you had bacon.
52:15 What was that like?
52:16 It's the best.
52:17 Take us through it.
52:18 Yeah.
52:19 I mean, I pork all the time now like as much as possible.
52:20 Okay.
52:21 But.
52:22 Like when you're talking about like Thanksgiving ham, right?
52:26 Yeah.
52:27 Versus a Thanksgiving turkey.
52:28 Turkey.
52:29 Yes.
52:30 100%.
52:31 Christmas.
52:32 Christmas.
52:33 Oh my gosh.
52:34 It doesn't matter what the holidays.
52:35 I have to have a turkey.
52:36 No.
52:37 You just created the smallest lane for a particular meal.
52:40 Okay.
52:41 So only on the Christmas table.
52:42 No, this is not a hey Christmas ham versus Christmas turkey conversation.
52:46 This is ham category versus turkey categories.
52:49 He used Thanksgiving.
52:50 No, he said Thanksgiving.
52:51 If I'm going to get a sandwich-
52:52 It's a ham sandwich.
52:53 Of course.
52:54 Obviously.
52:55 We didn't say, we're talking about delicious meat.
52:59 Just meat.
53:00 Not meat in general.
53:01 Yeah.
53:02 It's turkey.
53:03 So it's obviously ham.
53:04 It's obviously ham.
53:05 If you're talking about a sandwich.
53:06 We didn't say sandwich.
53:07 We're talking about-
53:08 I'm not asking you.
53:09 I also didn't say Thanksgiving either.
53:10 We didn't say that either.
53:11 We're talking about the whole category.
53:12 The homes of Thanksgiving, I'll have to have a turkey.
53:14 Like yeah.
53:15 Everybody has a turkey on Thanksgiving.
53:16 Yeah.
53:17 But they do it out of obligation now because they like it.
53:18 No.
53:19 Funny story about that.
53:20 So first, the first Thanksgiving I went to with Shannon, my wife, at their family, right?
53:26 We go and we sit down, bless food, all that, and it's only white meat on the table.
53:32 I've just leaned over to her.
53:33 I'm like, where's the dark meat?
53:34 She's like, what are you talking about?
53:37 The dark meat.
53:38 She's like, it's in the kitchen, like getting ready to get thrown away.
53:41 I almost called it off.
53:43 Oh, man.
53:44 I'm just like, what?
53:45 They just throw away the dark meat?
53:46 No.
53:47 They don't want it.
53:48 No, I got up and went and got it.
53:49 That's what their family does?
53:50 Yes.
53:51 They only eat the white?
53:52 Yes.
53:53 You know what you do in that situation?
53:54 The czar.
53:55 Is you get the turkey, the white meat turkey, and then you get two pieces of ham and you
53:58 use that as the bread and you make like a sandwich, right?
54:01 So like two pieces of awesome and one piece, one piece of nyeh?
54:04 I could advocate for that.
54:05 Okay.
54:06 Bam.
54:07 All right.
54:08 So maybe next time I have you guys over, that will be our dinner, our lunch.
54:10 Let's wrap up with verses nine through 11.
54:12 Did you have something?
54:13 It better be awesome, Ryan.
54:14 I was just better.
54:15 Be awesome.
54:16 I just want to talk about meditation.
54:17 Okay.
54:18 Go.
54:19 10 hours last week.
54:20 Yep.
54:21 So like always feel like anxiety hits me at night.
54:23 Okay.
54:24 Like I'm not saying evil spirits are coming at me, but like I always find myself meditating
54:29 and praying like the Psalms are a real good, like a visual of God's attributes and I always
54:34 find myself finding comfort in those hours like at night and through anxiety by like just
54:39 praying and meditating on God in that.
54:41 So like when they talked about, I will remember you upon bed and meditate on you.
54:45 Like that's a really good practice.
54:48 Just throw it out there.
54:49 How often do we do that?
54:50 I try to do it as much as I possibly can.
54:53 You're better than all of us.
54:54 No, I'm not better.
54:55 I'm just like sounded like, god, leave me, I can never you just smell so good.
54:59 It's like this so distracting by everything that you know, but like I can just imagine
55:05 you sitting there like meditating like with your feet crossed and your hands out and just
55:08 spraying yourself with two different kinds of cologne.
55:11 Like that image is not going to get out of my brain now.
55:14 Make it as well.
55:15 You're naked in this fantasy as well.
55:19 That's not good.
55:20 That's not about me naked.
55:21 That's not you're welcome.
55:22 That's like forging table approach like thrown out the dark meat.
55:24 That's right.
55:25 But, but no, but but I'm trying to be real with that.
55:28 Like, I mean, I didn't always do it in the past, but like I always found myself like
55:32 man, I would get hit with anxiety at night and it would hit me constantly.
55:38 And I noticed myself like I started reading a book about the Psalms and stuff.
55:41 I just noticed myself meditating on the attributes of God.
55:43 And it was just, it's like, man, I'm living scripture when I was reading this one.
55:47 I was like, there's something I'm actually doing right sometimes, you know, and it's,
55:52 it pays off.
55:53 Absolutely.
55:54 Well, let's just cover these last few verses nine through 11.
55:57 But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth.
56:00 They shall be given over to the power of the sword.
56:02 They shall be a portion for the jackals, but the king shall rejoice in God.
56:07 All who swear by him shall exalt for the mouths of liars will be stopped.
56:12 So this is all talking about opposition here.
56:14 And I just, I love the last line for the mouths of liars will be stopped because all of us,
56:20 regardless of our business, whether we talk into a microphone for living or whether you're
56:23 sitting with clients or sitting with people that you're trying to sell to customers, you
56:27 might get people that just get to a point where they've got an axe to grind and they're
56:30 going to try to ruin your life.
56:31 And they're going to try to say stuff that just flat out isn't true or maybe it's not
56:34 true and they believe it is.
56:36 And so they're just going to spread this, you know, far and wide.
56:39 And so I literally wrote down like this is, you know, we aren't going to stop the mouths
56:44 of liars.
56:45 Right.
56:46 That's not our job.
56:47 And so one of the things, one of the David Thompson isms was don't sweat the small stuff.
56:51 I know he didn't make that up, but, you know, as a kid, you know, when you're full of anxiety
56:55 and, you know, wanting to get everything done and be the best and all that type of stuff.
56:59 Like you're constantly sweating the small stuff and I will let small stuff just absolutely
57:03 destroy me and like overtake my brain, but it's like, Hey man, control the controllables.
57:08 We can't control this.
57:09 Why are you trying to?
57:10 Isn't that so funny?
57:11 Cause like there are things that we know we have no control over, but we will act like
57:15 we do and we'll do inputs into the front of the system that are like trying to control.
57:19 It's like, come on, man, you got no shot.
57:21 I think you bring up a good point because like the note I ended on with that is God will
57:25 be glorified in the end.
57:27 And so I always think about, you know, like we're going through this whole Christian nationalism
57:31 stuff.
57:32 We got what's that home boy that with a gun guy, Shane Clayborn, oh boy, we all want to
57:37 create this utopia and we got to realize that we're not going to be able to create
57:42 that.
57:43 We are not the people.
57:44 And in the end, God's going to be glorified and when he's glorified, he's bringing it himself.
57:49 You're not bringing it.
57:50 He is.
57:51 And so I think that's something that I, you know, made me really convicted me in, in that,
57:55 in that I can't, I can't do it all.
57:57 You can't do it all.
57:58 And you got to let him do it.
57:59 And so in the end, he'll be glorified no matter what.
58:03 Other thoughts as we wrap up the 63rd song, well guys, we're just going to have to leave
58:07 it there.
58:08 But come back here next week where we are going to be digging into one more song before we
58:11 move on to something awesome, which we'll talk about next week.
58:14 But go ahead and read Psalm 91, that's Psalm 91.
58:17 Be ready for next week.
