This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
0:51
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:53
Let's get into it.
0:55
Welcome back to the forging table, the mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push
0:58
back darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental and physical resilience.
1:03
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:06
by digging into God's word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey
1:09
with us.
1:10
That's Russell.
1:11
That's Zach.
1:12
That's Ryan guys.
1:13
We're getting into Psalm 30.
1:14
And the interesting thing about Psalm 30 is that is your favorite Psalm Ryan.
1:18
And so I don't think any of the rest of us are really going to talk for this whole thing.
1:22
So if you just want to carry the entire weight of making the Psalm good for the audience,
1:27
ready to go.
1:28
All right.
1:29
It's going to take about 30 minutes.
1:30
Yeah.
1:31
I think it's cool that I'm the only one of the original forging table cast to actually
1:36
do their Psalm now.
1:37
I know.
1:38
Well, it's because like those, we just don't like them as much.
1:40
Right.
1:41
And again, they're not here to defend themselves.
1:42
And they're the ones that didn't make themselves completely available to the forging table and
1:45
to our audience.
1:46
So guys, if you want to know who you should root for like who your favorite forging table
1:50
is, Ryan, he's the one he's like Johnny on the spot.
1:53
He was ready to go.
1:54
He was going to be flexible and present whenever he wanted to get my vote.
1:58
I'm a loser who has no friends except for you.
2:00
Well, there's that.
2:01
There is that.
2:02
So no, Psalm 30 verse five, I like to say that this set of scripture or this chapter
2:08
is like kind of like peeled back the onion for me.
2:14
There's many things that I've gone through in life and done.
2:19
And I've always come back to this verse and this verse has changed in so many ways from
2:24
what it was for me at the beginning.
2:26
And then as I've grown as a Christian, what it means to me now to bring a little bit of
2:32
a personal element to it as a new believer.
2:36
I was reading this chapter actually was this chapter I was reading and a verse really stuck
2:44
out to me.
2:45
And that was Psalms 30 verse five is anger last a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime.
2:51
At that time, dealing with a tough time in life, I was kind of doing some not good things.
2:58
And God kind of just opened my eyes to my depravity and I didn't like the way that looked.
3:03
I didn't like seeing myself in that light.
3:05
I didn't think that light was a was a good thing for me.
3:08
So I started getting into church, found a church, got baptized from there, kind of went back
3:14
into this whole, you know, his anger last a moment, but his favor last a lifetime.
3:18
You know, God's God's like my father.
3:21
He's going to be, you know, he's going to love me no matter what.
3:25
And he made me who I am.
3:27
And so how I believe and what I believe and what I do, that's okay, because I have grace.
3:32
And so that grace I took for I took advantage of I was throwing parties.
3:38
I was actually part of a church group where we would get together on Thursday nights,
3:43
other than on the weekends, I was throwing parties, like massive parties.
3:47
People are getting high, drunk.
3:49
I'm pretty sure there was some sexual escapades going on within that group that I was leading
3:55
as a supposed Christ follower.
3:58
And so I end up getting back into a rut.
4:02
I get married.
4:03
I have kids and now I'm reading the Psalm again and in this Psalm, I'm seeing a totally different
4:08
light of my depravity.
4:10
I'm seeing a total didn't different light of what God's justice and grace looks like.
4:16
And that's where it kind of begins for me.
4:19
So if you want me to start, go ahead, let us off, let's go.
4:25
So, so 30 verse two, Oh Lord, my God, I cried to you for help and you have healed me.
4:33
So just looking at peeling back those layers, when I read something like that, it would
4:38
be more of a prosperity type of mindset back when I first was a believer.
4:42
And now I look at it as a, as a, as like a cry out to God and praising him because he
4:50
you found me.
4:51
And so when you, when you look at David in this and you look at him extolling God here,
4:55
it's because God brought him out of the clutches of death.
4:58
And when I look back at this now as God brought me out of the clutches of my own depravity,
5:02
my own death, my own spiritual death.
5:04
And so that really, that really took a lot from me.
5:06
So I guess we're, you know, where do you guys see in that verse?
5:11
You know, I see God alone heals and that David praises him for being, for being there for
5:17
him.
5:18
Well, I think it's, you know, I cried out to you for help.
5:21
And so it really goes into what we were talking about last week where you're talking about
5:25
okay, taking your problems and your laments to God and then, you know, asking for help,
5:31
especially when we have kind of this very American eyes, like pull yourself up by your
5:36
bootstraps mindset and, you know, to a degree, I think some people need a whole lot more
5:40
of that in their life because anytime anything goes wrong, they look around for somebody
5:43
else to solve the problem for them.
5:45
And so I think there's some issues with that.
5:47
But that's, that's what sticks out to me that he's crying out for help.
5:50
Yeah, I kind of understood it the same way as what Ryan was describing.
5:58
And as a new believer, it was God, I called out to you for help and you're the only thing
6:06
that could have saved me.
6:08
And that as a new believer, you just start to understand that that's the only direction
6:12
you can go.
6:13
You have your lifelong history of depravity and you know what's right and wrong, just
6:18
inherently.
6:19
So it must be from the Lord.
6:20
And now that you've been saved, I mean, it's, it's the only direction you can go is to
6:26
extol the Lord for all his grace.
6:30
I would even say when you get into verse three, oh Lord, you have brought up my soul from
6:35
shield.
6:36
You restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.
6:39
So go down to the piz.
6:40
Another way saying, you know, dying, but you know, I saw in some of the commentaries where
6:43
it's like this was likely after a near death experience that David had.
6:49
And so you hear from different people before that have like died and then, you know, supposedly
6:53
hovered over the body and looked at themselves and all that.
6:56
And you know, it's kind of like regardless of if it's true or not, they live as if it
6:59
is that as if they were like, no, you're not quite done, but we're going to give you
7:03
a little bit of a peek into what's in the next area and it's not just, you know, perpetual
7:08
darkness.
7:09
It's not just, you know, worm food, like, you know, it's, it's a serious deal.
7:12
So I think that that's tied to that as well, like God healing and God restoring somebody
7:18
as well.
7:19
I agree with you 100% in the restoration. I mean, when I when I look at that, it's, you
7:24
know, where were we going, you know, in the, in the way that I was living my life beforehand,
7:30
where was I going? Was I, was I going in the path of his heavenly grace or was I going
7:35
to the path of shield? And, you know, that's one thing that I feel that that God restored
7:41
me in and that brought a lot of a substance to this, this verse for me.
7:46
Yeah, I was looking at just some comments I had here that speak a little bit to that.
7:52
And so I won't commentator mentioned that the book of Psalms is kind of three different.
7:57
There's kind of three major points. One of them, it's either they're, they're a psalm
8:00
of orientation. So a psalm of praise. So things are oriented rightly with God, right?
8:04
Oh, there are Psalms of disorientation. So that's like lament. Things are wrong. Things
8:08
are out of order. And then there are Psalms of reorientation, which is thankfulness, which
8:13
is kind of what this Psalm is essentially. It's I'm reorienting myself in a proper way
8:18
before God, right? Because I have experienced something that is kind of causing me to be
8:23
thankful and, and, and then a quote that I have here, which I think is really, really
8:28
good as it says, and I apologize. I didn't source it or write the source, but it says
8:34
gratitude is a profound defense against the swelling of pride. And I just thought it was
8:39
really, really good as, you know, David here is expressing his thankfulness and his praise
8:45
for something. But that's really, it's helping him to not be proud, prideful, right? To not
8:50
be, I think, Oh, man, I made it out. Man, great job, Russell, great job, you know, myself,
8:57
right? And he's, he's, you know, he's giving credit to where credit is true is to the Lord
9:01
and the Lord is the only one who's going to be able to get us not only through this life,
9:04
but you know, for our eternal salvation. So right in the moment there, he's sorry to
9:09
cut you off. You know, this is David or this, you know, Psalm is to basically glorify David
9:19
for this temple that's been built. And he's given all the credit to God, you know, when
9:25
any other human in the world, especially at the time and even in our day would be ready
9:29
to take all the credit. Just like that part of it.
9:33
That's one thing I should have prefaced because I'm a horrible moderator. And that's why Kyle
9:36
does this job is that, you know, this Psalm is a dedication of either one of either the
9:42
temple or one of David's palaces. Everybody seems the temple was the temple that was built
9:48
after he died. Yeah, right. So most scholars believe it was a temple, but the Psalm begins
9:54
with praise, you know, with Ike stole you. And then he looks back, if you read back here,
9:59
he looks back at previous prayers and remembers previous prayers and God's actions. And then
10:04
he leads with public reminders and individual and his individual testimony. And so as we
10:10
go through this verse, we'll kind of see those correlations. I wish I would have brought
10:13
that up beforehand, but I did not star that on my notes. It's all good. I just wanted
10:18
to jump right in. No, that's good. And this really here, I don't want to go to verse five
10:23
if there's more stuff in verses one through four. So make sure you get some more stuff
10:27
because like I wanted to kind of camp out on verse five, five and six is where it's all
10:31
out for five and six. Let me take it back to let me take it back to the verse two and
10:34
three then where God, you've brought me up, you brought my soul up from shield. That just
10:40
kind of really hit me as that was the moment when I was saved. God has brought me to a
10:46
new point in my life. And I've been reborn from all of my past. Now that I put my trust
10:51
in the Lord, I don't have to do those things again. I have somewhere to turn to. I have
10:56
a savior and him bringing David's soul up from shield. Maybe it was saving him in a battle.
11:02
But to me, reading that it was God saving me and bringing my soul up from what I used
11:08
to do in my past transgressions and the people I used to run around with him like Ryan was
11:14
saying right when we opened up, you know, he was throwing parties. I was doing the same
11:18
thing. Me and Ryan kind of came up around each other. And I was just a bad influence
11:22
on people in general, not in an incredibly like terrible way, but I was just influencing
11:30
them to do the wrong things and for the wrong reason. So now that I'm with the Lord, he's
11:35
brought me up. He's brought my soul up from shield and delivered me. So I don't have to
11:40
go to hell. You know, now I have a purpose. Now I'm with the Lord. He's delivered me.
11:45
And I'm able to influence people in the correct manner.
11:48
Yeah, I think that's helpful. I brought this up. I can't remember when, but people that
11:56
have done really depraved things understand the gravity way better than people will go
12:01
ahead.
12:02
So I was literally, I think we're on the same vein here, same thought here. So what I wanted
12:06
to say is I don't have the similar experience that you guys have of like, Oh, I was the
12:11
Gathron parties or whatever. Like I was just, you know, the good upstanding kid. But that
12:15
doesn't mean that I wasn't just as bad of an influence. So like, Hey, you need to go
12:19
yesterday's Hey, you need to be the president of this or that or whatever. Because I was
12:23
finding I was doing it all up in myself, right? I mean, it's all about me. It was all about
12:28
my resume. And that's what I was encouraging other people to do, right? And that's what
12:31
my parents were, you know, wanting to do because they didn't know any better. And that is just
12:36
as depraved as, you know, somebody who's in the middle of a party, right? And so for me,
12:43
we just pause and say we've got a first time thing that's ever happened on this podcast.
12:49
We had somebody who has their ringer on. Can we just start there? Like, does anybody have
12:53
their ringer on these days? Are you on call? No, no, that was an alarm. Generally, Sunday
12:59
nights at seven. Make sure it's a really, okay, I was gonna say make sure it's a really sure
13:05
chance. Normally it's seven is when I start fasting and praying to the Lord and all those
13:10
different things. But no, thank you for allowing us to bust through that. He was in the middle
13:13
of a fantastic point. No, no, no, you're good. And the man will see your bell thing going
13:17
out from the Lord because that was a week as a lot ever. So if you don't mind pick up
13:24
where you were you left off? No, I'm just saying so, you know, I don't, I didn't have
13:27
that same experience. But I know that that's really important, especially, you know, maybe
13:32
cultures like ours or in Oklahoma or whatever, where you've got a lot of, you know, good
13:36
kids and society's eyes, maybe that haven't necessarily been in that. But and my influence
13:42
for is just as to pray because I wasn't pointing anybody to Christ. I mean, I was just saying,
13:47
Hey, like, I was kind of spreading the gospel level. If you're good enough, you'll be fine.
13:51
You know, and I think that's even worse because, you know, America has has kind of pushed the
13:57
narrative that like, you know, and it's even worse because I think it's well, if you if
14:01
you feel good, then you're good. No, it's not not only is there like a good and a bad,
14:05
it's really is if you feel good, which is even worse. But that said, you know, I think it's
14:10
I think it is great when there are people who have testimonies like Zach's and and Ryan's where,
14:15
you know, you've done things that you can clearly see were out of line with God, what God wanted.
14:21
Well, mine, looking back, I can clearly see it. But in those moments, man, I was tipping those
14:26
scales and I'm I'm better than he is or better than she is. And man, I was really prayed. And
14:31
I'm and I'm thankful that I can see the holiness of God. And that's what that's what David did
14:37
really well in the Psalms is he really talks about the character of God. And you realize how
14:44
and how far off we are, no matter how good. Well, it's it's the gospel behavioral modification.
14:49
Right. That's kind of what you were doing. Because I was the same guy, like I was the guy in college
14:52
where, you know, Friday night when all my friends were out getting drunk and making bad decisions,
14:55
I was studying for Monday's test on Friday night. And so by Sunday, when they're trying to cram,
14:59
I mean, I'm just going back over my notes and I'm ready to go for Monday. But it's like,
15:04
that can't save you. Like being the dutiful conscientious kid that doesn't really get into
15:08
real trouble, like that's that doesn't save anybody. But those people like, I remember,
15:13
you know, talking to some people that did some really horrific things. And their understanding
15:18
of depravity and told depravity was at a different level and it just came naturally to them.
15:22
Because they were never marinated in I just don't get in trouble. Right. They were always in trouble.
15:27
And it's kind of harder almost for a kid that's not really ever in trouble and is usually
15:33
teachers pet or usually doing the right thing for them to understand like, that's not good enough.
15:38
Like, even as good as you are as good as you think you are, it's just flat out, not good enough.
15:43
I feel like Psalm 30 really takes a turn, at least for me with first five. And that's what I said
15:49
earlier is kind of where I wanted to camp out for his anger is but for a moment and his favor is
15:55
for a lifetime. Weeping may teary for the night, but joy comes in the morning. So the name of the
16:00
Psalm is joy comes in the morning. Now, I am sure that verse is really, really difficult to read
16:10
and to hear for people that struggle with long term depression, people that are having trouble
16:15
conceiving, people that have lost a child or a close family member or a friend for people who
16:23
have gone bankrupt, maybe they've been screwed out of their business or out of their nonprofit.
16:29
For someone to read that, it's like joy comes in the morning, especially when you understand that
16:33
morning isn't referring to tomorrow when the sun comes up. Morning is when God will give his relief.
16:39
And the reality is, is the relief may never come in this life. And that's kind of the hard
16:46
things like the relief for your torment may come in the last day, the very last day before judgment,
16:53
right? Or I guess it would be at judgment, right? And the renewing of everything. And so I really
16:59
want to get y'all's perspective on that because I have not struggled with long term depression or
17:04
any of these, these crazy losses. But it's like, you read that and it sounds good, you know, joy will
17:09
come in the morning, but it's like, man, but I'm in the crap right now. Like, and the morning is
17:14
tomorrow and I know I won't feel better. So I dealt with anxiety, especially when I was reading
17:20
this for the first time, I dealt with a lot of anxiety. Mainly for the fact is I grew up in a
17:24
Christian home, I grew up to know what was morally right and was morally wrong. And I knew I was
17:29
doing the morally abhorrent. When I read that, I read that as, you know, God may be mad at me at
17:37
this time, but you know, at that anger only lasts for a moment, but his favor for me lasts a lifetime.
17:44
So that kind of like opened up some like fatherly instincts that I had of God. But then as I started
17:52
reading my Bible more, especially reading the Old Testament, I see how God has his wrath and God
17:58
throws down a lot towards the Israelites, especially after they break their covenant with him. And so
18:04
now I'm looking at a God who's, you know, no longer a father figure. Now I'm looking at a God who's just
18:09
like on a warpath, you know, and then I'm, my anxieties are going even more like, you know what,
18:14
I totally deserve everything that I'm feeling right now or what I'm thinking right now,
18:19
because I had a hypochondria or something like that. I always thought I was dying. I thought I was
18:23
dying for like eight years. And so I was like, man, if I have cancer, I deserve it, man. I did this,
18:28
you know, like God totally is justified in doing this. So then when you read more and more into the
18:35
context of this verse, and this is where John MacArthur calls it one of the most worshipful
18:39
testimonies in scripture, you look back in Isaiah 54 seven through eight, and it says,
18:46
for a brief moment, I abandoned you during this time with, I'll give some preface first on Isaiah
18:51
54. This is when the Israelites are in an exile. I believe it's Babylonian exile.
18:59
Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not a Bible scholar, but for a brief moment, I abandoned you,
19:04
but with great compassion, I will gather you. And in an outburst of anger, I hid my face from you
19:09
for a moment, but the everlasting favor, I will have compassion on you, says the Lord the Redeemer.
19:15
And so during the time before Christ came, I was at 900 years before Christ came during,
19:20
it was like kind of the dark period. People thought that God turned on them, turned away from them.
19:26
Maybe he, you know, maybe he did. Maybe he turned his face like they talk about
19:30
a lot in scripture where, you know, because of what they've done in the past, he, he turned away.
19:36
And so that's for a moment though. And if you look at Jeremiah 2911, know the plans that I have for
19:41
you to prosper for you to, you know, um, plans to prosper. And I can't remember the rest of the
19:48
verse because I'm thinking of all these other verses inside my head right now. But during that
19:52
time, that was the Babylonian exile as well with, um, with the Israelites, but they wanted to give
19:58
up. They wanted to give up as a race and God kept them going. You know, and so God here is keeping
20:03
going. And the fact that his anger is for a moment, there's going to be consequences. I think our
20:08
pastor talked about a couple weeks back, um, about, um, and James about not all sin is the same,
20:16
you know, is all sin the same? Yes and no. Yes and that sin is sin and it's going to be viewed as sin,
20:22
but the consequences of that sin are not going to be the same. Um, and so here we realize that, you know,
20:29
his anger is here for a moment, but his favors for a lifetime that he still has a plan for us,
20:35
no matter what we've done as long as we keep our faith in him. So I feel like I rambled for,
20:40
for too long here. So I want to open up to you guys. No, I think that's good because ultimately,
20:45
you have to understand that with joy coming in the morning, like there has to be a predicate for
20:52
why that joy would need to come in the morning. And so because for most people, like, if you're
20:56
already joyful and everything's only up and up, you're not expectant for the morning. I guess you
21:01
could say you're not waiting on the morning. It's like, well, I'm feeling pretty good right now.
21:05
So tomorrow will just be more good or with more sunlight. Like this will be great. And so I think
21:10
that that's, that's helpful as you look at that as well. And I think I'm sorry. Good. No, but the
21:15
joy to that comes in the morning, I think I, I missed the best part of this, but the joy is Christ.
21:19
You know, the joy that came to the Israelites was the Messiah. The joy that comes to us that came
21:23
to me in this time of need is knowing that I need a Christ that I am a depraved sinner.
21:28
And I'm never going to be as perfect and holy as he is. But God sent him there for me. And that
21:35
is where my joy comes. Yeah, I think on a, on a prior session of this, you know, I think you guys
21:45
are talking about shame and guilt and how like loss and failure is such a big motivating factor.
21:52
It's, it's in, in psychologically, I think even for the human race that, you know, failure is much
21:59
more of a motivator than gain, right? We feel failure a lot more than you feel gain. But it's
22:04
kind of interesting that with God, joy and sorrow are asymmetrical. The joy is so much greater than
22:10
the sorrow. I mean, you look at essentially the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I mean,
22:15
the crucifixion in itself was so painful and so sorrowful. And for those three days, you know,
22:23
while he is in the grave, I mean, the sorrow is immense. But upon that resurrection of Jesus
22:31
Christ, that, you know, that joy in the morning of that day is so much greater. And I think that,
22:36
you know, if we can just, in our finite minds, try and continue to teach that to ourselves as
22:42
believers in Christ, you know, that will help us get to those seasons and I think you're right,
22:47
y'all. I think there are, you know, you know, we pray that we don't find ourselves in those
22:53
circumstances. But there will be some of us, maybe in this room or some of us that we're close to,
22:59
who will be in seasons that will last for the remainder of their temporal life. But eternity
23:05
is so much. I mean, it's beyond our, you know, comprehension. Obviously, the joy is experienced
23:11
in that eternity far greater outweighs the 60, 70, 80 years we have here.
23:16
Right. And that kind of goes throughout history. You think of God's anger. You know,
23:21
what is that? That is how people feel like, you know, I feel like God's angry at me or
23:26
I'm in the slumps. So God must be angry. God's anger is only expressed throughout history is when
23:33
people are in the, in the dumps. So everybody who's ever felt like they're down or that God
23:38
was angry at him has lived and died and that anger is over. Currently, besides Christ,
23:45
as the only one who's ever died and been resurrected. So every other person that's ever lived has
23:49
experienced God's anger, but that is over now. And it is so that they can experience his favor and
23:57
eternity forever. I think when we experience God's anger or his wrath or we think it's
24:03
his wrath or his anger, it usually is a consequence to our actions. And that's where I like to come
24:08
back to, to verse six and seven. You know, as for me, I said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved
24:14
by your favor. Oh Lord, you made my mountain stand strong. You hid your face and I was dismayed.
24:20
So David was being arrogant. And I feel a lot of our, a lot of the wrath that we think that
24:26
comes towards us is due to our own arrogance as either human beings or as Christians.
24:33
You know, the higher you are, the harder you fall. You know, and I feel in this, in this way,
24:39
that David, David's like in all my arrogance, I thought I had everything figured out. But no,
24:44
I didn't. And you even through my arrogance, you may have turned your head for me and was dismayed,
24:51
but then you go into eight and nine to you. Oh Lord, I cry out. Lord, I plead for your mercy. And
24:56
that's like something as a believer, you know, as a, as a form or not a former believer, but as
25:01
person who wasn't a believer beforehand, at some point, you know, God's going to open my eyes to my
25:06
depravity and I'm going to have to call out and repent. I'm going to have to repent of the way I've
25:12
been living and then see the light in his way. And I got to know that, you know, through my arrogance,
25:18
I can't do it all. I can. I have to rely on him. So I'm showing my ignorance a little bit here.
25:25
When I'm reading six and seven, I don't, I don't, for whatever reason, pick up that he was, uh, he was
25:31
arrogant. Help me understand that a little bit more. So he says, as for for me, I said, my prosperity,
25:37
I shall never be moved. So through his own prosperity, through his own doing, he says,
25:44
he shall never be moved. And he says, by your favor, oh Lord, you made my mountain stand strong.
25:51
So it wasn't him that should have never been moved. Like it wasn't through his bidding. It was through
25:56
God's bidding. He said, you hid your face. I was dismayed. Why did God hide his face? Because through
26:01
what God did holding him strong as a mountain, he thought he did through his own prosperity.
26:07
And so that's when he cries out to you, oh Lord, I cry out for your mercy. But profit is there in my
26:14
death. If I go down to the pit, so he's, he's needing self-preservation. He's talking about self-preservation
26:19
right there. So is it an acknowledgement problem here that he's, he's thinking he had it going on
26:24
because he created that. And the whole time I was like, oh, I'm not acknowledging, you know,
26:29
why things are so good. Like it's not that I'm so good. It's that it's been given to me in this
26:33
good way. Yeah. And he'll recognize that in versus 30, 12. Um, as he, as he's talking about stuff for
26:39
preservation, but you right on track on that. Okay. I'm with you. I'm caught back up. I'm a
26:45
little slow, but I get there eventually guys. Stop looking at me like that. No, you're good.
26:47
That's, that's kind of where I, Ryan had the same thought I did. And that's, that's actually
26:51
where that quote came from. Gratitude is profound defense against the swelling of pride. So that's
26:56
kind of where I had that originally from, from verse six and seven. Just the concept of, you know,
27:02
not thinking you did it yourself, right? Because then he says, yes, Lord, you did it. But I actually
27:07
love verse eight and nine because then here's David kind of calling out to the Lord. And he's like,
27:13
almost like praying practically. He's like, Hey, hey, well, if I'm dead, like who can worship you,
27:17
you know, I mean, I mean, you know, Hey, Lord, you know, and, and I think that's okay. I think
27:21
it's believers. I think we need to recognize like that, you know, we are worshipers and, and
27:27
ultimately God's highest call is for us to glorify him. And, and I think, you know, when we recognize
27:33
that and we say, Hey, give me the opportunity to glorify and honor you Lord. I think, I think,
27:38
I think that's what he wants us to do, right? And so he wants us to come to that realization
27:42
and to do that ourselves. And so I like that he's praying practically like that. And, you know,
27:47
obviously the Lord knows that, but, but he's, you know, trying to make his argument, right? For
27:51
his self-preservation. I think it's great because he says, who will tell of your faithfulness? You
27:56
know, like, who's, you know, if I die, who's going to tell of your faithfulness is it's like
28:00
enacting the great commission before the great commission was ever given, you know, like God
28:05
wants us around as long as, you know, for as long as he has us around for, but he wants us to go out
28:11
there and he wants us to talk of his faithfulness. And also go ahead, Zach.
28:14
What, uh, I mean, David is understanding here. He comes to the realization that what is his
28:19
prosperity and what do his good deeds do in eternity if it's just because of him? You know,
28:25
he's realizing in real time, I feel like here and beating out for mercy that unless the glory is
28:32
given to God, none of it means anything. And how will other people be inspired to glorify God and
28:38
his kingdom and the creator? If David is the one doing all these good things, you know, it has to be
28:44
from God. One also in verse eight, and to the Lord, I pled for mercy.
28:50
We, we've gotten almost comfortable with this idea that we're mistakeers and not sinners. And like,
28:59
when you make a mistake, you don't need to plead for mercy. Because the mistake is you turn left
29:04
and you were supposed to turn, you know, at the next left, right? Like that's a mistake, but we just
29:09
gotten comfortable in this language that, oh, you know, I'm not perfect. Nobody's perfect. And then
29:13
we just say whatever our favorite sin is. And we're like, yeah, that's why my sin's not that big a
29:17
deal. Or hey, I took this personality test and I'm wired this way. So it's like no one can actually
29:21
be mad at me because, you know, God made me this way. That's basically they're a walking Lady Gaga
29:25
song, you know, like, you know, I was born this way kind of a thing. But is that the first Lady Gaga
29:29
reference on the forging table? That's probably the first hand last. Hope so. Okay, I hope so too.
29:34
I don't know why who I don't why someone said like Russell's poker face. Yeah, Russell's like,
29:38
I just don't I don't claim Kyle anymore. It's like, how can I get out of this room? I'm in the
29:41
back corner. But how can I get out of here without anybody noticing? But the point I was trying to
29:45
make before I went off into Gaga land was pleading for mercy. That's what you do when you're repenting.
29:51
Not I'm sorry, Ying. God, I'm so sorry I did that thing. Repenting is not saying sorry really loudly.
29:58
Repenting is turning 180 from the life you were doing the decisions you were making and the
30:02
direction that you were going and going in the opposite direction. And you're pleading for God,
30:06
like, please don't judge me based on what was what I was doing when I was going that way.
30:11
I'm in the process of repentance. So that's like pleading, you know, how you know, I pled for mercy.
30:17
Like that that's a big deal. I feel like for verse eight.
30:19
No, I think it's good. And my poker face actually was I'm sitting here. We're counting in my mind.
30:24
All the lyrics to that song is your favorite and singing in the shower. Okay.
30:28
No, I have an eight and a half year old son and, you know, honestly, just walking through kind of
30:36
early in their life when they would make a mistake in talking about mistakes and then that leading to
30:42
almost this, like, or understanding of like sin. And so now I have an older son who's eight and
30:48
half years old. And he does something that's out of line, disobedient, knows it's wrong.
30:54
Like, well, that I'm not perfect. I can't be perfect. Only Jesus is perfect. I'm like, dude, like, you
30:58
have no idea how mad you're making me right now. You know, and so, so walking through it,
31:02
being careful with that. And I think it's really important, like with our kids to lay the proper
31:08
foundation for sin and not just like, yes, you can make mistakes. But when you are being disobedient,
31:15
like, and it's, and it's truly, you know, wrong. And it's, you know, something like it, whether it's
31:21
being accrued to your brothers and sisters or disrespectful to their mom or whatever it may be,
31:28
those things are sinful. And you don't get like a get out of jail free card, you know,
31:35
because I can't be perfect. Oh, like that's sinful, man. Like before mom and dad, because
31:40
you're supposed to honor us, but really before Holy God. And so just when you say a mistake,
31:45
I'm like, man, I, I know with our oldest, like, they were a mistakeer for a while. And, man,
31:49
that's wrecking wreaking havoc and just their own development, right? And he's also really bright.
31:55
But he's, he's really good at construing things like, you know, he's very literal with words. So
32:02
annoyingly so gotta be careful. Yeah. Oh, yeah. So Ryan, go ahead and pick back up because you,
32:07
you know, camping on eight and nine, but then, you know, that kind of carries us through to the
32:11
last few verses. Yeah. So 11 through 12. I mean, this is kind of where David,
32:17
David recognizes all that he has is from God's hand and not his. So coming out of the clutches
32:23
where he was at multiple times when he's a stolen God in the beginning and looking back at other
32:29
prayers, being free from those is not through his hand, but through God's. There's times in his life
32:37
where he did he did stupid things, Bathsheba killing of Uriah. So at that time, he had consequences.
32:45
He lost his first born and his anger. God's anger lasted for a moment, but God's favor ever changed
32:51
for David. It never did. So, you know, he weep through the night over his son and then, but in the
32:56
morning there was joy because he knew of God's providence. And so as for me, I said in my prosperity,
33:02
we already went over that. So if we get back to what this is, is the dedication of a temple.
33:08
The temple that was built, you know, they wouldn't like, I think, was it Zach that said earlier about
33:15
the temple was built and he didn't want to take credit for it. Yeah, and I think it comes back
33:22
as he wants everybody everybody to know that this is through God's hand that this temple is created.
33:27
This is through God that all of the prosperity that they're having as the nation of Israel
33:31
is not by David's hand by his hand. And so he basically reiterates that through verses 11 and 12.
33:39
One thing about 11 that stood out for me just even recently reading it, you have turned for me
33:45
my morning into dancing. So we have this modern kind of moral therapeutic deism. We have self-help
33:52
books. We have mindset gurus. We have meditation. We have focusing on the self. We have personality
33:58
tests. We have all these things. And it makes you the author of your attitude. If it's good,
34:04
and it makes the world the author of everything that could befall you, right? And so it's like,
34:09
if anything is successful or if you're successful at all, it's because you are so awesome. But if
34:14
things are bad, it's because of you were born this color or you were born this gender or to the
34:18
socioeconomic status or because some unspoken force in the ether is like targeting you for
34:25
destruction, right? But even right there, it's like, it's not, hey, through stick toattiveness
34:31
in moxie, I was able to turn my morning into dancing. It's like, no, no, no, you did that.
34:36
So it's almost like he learned the lesson from earlier that it's like, no, no, no, no, it wasn't
34:41
me that did any of these things. It was you that turned my morning into dancing. And part of that,
34:46
I feel like guys is like, it's you have to let him do that. Because it wasn't like he was trying to
34:51
decide, ah, should I turn this jack wagons morning into dancing? Yeah, I guess I'll do that. But it's
34:56
like, you almost had to like get out of his way to allow him to do that for you. That's at least
35:00
what I get whenever I read that. I think, um, as I said, I know it here. So George McDonald's,
35:06
so this is the guy who influenced C. S. Lewis greatly. Um, he said, there's one certain conviction
35:11
into this is his quote, one certain conviction in hell is that I am my own. Um, not only is that
35:18
what sends people to hell, but it also causes hell on earth today, right? So in the concept of
35:24
I am my own, right? I mean, that goes clearly against the face of scripture. I mean, first
35:27
Corinthians 6 19 through 20 says, or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
35:32
who is who is in you, who you have from God, and that you are not your own, where you have been
35:38
bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. But just the concept of, you know,
35:42
oh, well, it's, it's my doing. I am my own. I'm going to do it. And that just wreaks havoc on,
35:48
you know, earth today. And ultimately, that's what, you know, individuals and, you know, hell are
35:52
essentially aspiring to them for themselves. So, um, but I like, so verse 11 and 12 in particular,
36:00
again, being the visual guy, the guy who I need word pictures to really let it soak in. And this
36:05
is one of those ones is really good, right? You've got dancing, you've got sack cloth,
36:09
girded with gladness, you know, singing praise, not being silent, giving thanks forever. Those
36:13
are all I can kind of just picture that a little bit. Um, and it just the joy that's being
36:21
welled up from kind of this, you know, prior, you know, pittiness, I guess, that he was having,
36:27
um, kind of sticks out to me.
36:28
This is the longest day there in the history of the forging table. I was just rereading 11 and 12.
36:39
Clowed me with gladness. That was something that I wanted to kind of get into as well,
36:46
because there are people that have natural predisposition towards gladness in most situations.
36:52
And I'm reading something in the scripture here. So I want to be very, very careful because I'm
36:56
I'm about to, I, I sajee, and I'm not an exajee here. I get the sense that David might be a bit
37:01
of a pessimist, uh, that David, because again, when you read through the Psalms, there's so much
37:07
lament. And there's a lot of praise, but there's still kind of more on the, the lamentation side
37:12
of things. But you clothed me with gladness. Someone that's glad all the time. It's like they almost
37:18
don't recognize their gladness. Like a fish doesn't understand what wet is, right? Because like,
37:22
their whole world is wet. And so to a degree, it's like, clothed me with gladness. I get the
37:27
sense is because he is so familiar with the opposite of that, whatever the, you know,
37:31
opposite of gladness would be, you know, just pain, agony, lament. Um, so that, that language
37:37
there is interesting to me. And I don't have any special notes on that. So I don't know if any,
37:41
for any of you guys, if that caught you in a particular way, but that, that just still stood
37:45
out to me as well. I mean, I can see what you're saying. I mean, the, the guy's been through a lot.
37:50
Bought Goliath at what 15 years old, uh, was being chased by a king for half of his life,
37:59
lied to, um, did stupid things on his own, like, uh, adultery and killing people and making bad
38:07
decisions. And I think he, I think, I would say with David, it's like, you could see the scars on
38:13
David. When David laments, you can see the scars, you know, but when you read the Psalms, it's,
38:19
the scars are there, but his praise is even stronger than scars. And so I could see where you can,
38:25
you can get where you're, you're coming from him being clothed in gladness, but I think that he had
38:30
so much faith in God and what God can do because he's seen that. He's seen what God can do throughout
38:35
his life that, you know, I don't know if this is in the end before the, uh, temple was built or
38:40
during the temple. So this could have been later in his life, especially since he's going back and,
38:45
and praying about a, uh, bringing up other prayers that he had in the past. So this could be later
38:48
in life. This could be, you know, you've clothed me in gladness through all of what I've been through.
38:53
Yeah, it's like he's realizing, uh, John 1624 in real time. So he's pleading with God for mercy,
39:01
which is asking. So John 1624, uh, until now you've asked nothing on me, asked, um,
39:08
and you will receive so that your joy may be full. He's saying, you know, he's leading with God
39:16
and asking for mercy. And now he's, um, become, um, um, clothed in gladness. You know, his joy has
39:25
been made full. So I was thinking about why we were just talking through that, you know, asking
39:29
you so received their joy, maybe, maybe full. Yeah, I was just gonna, uh, mention you right
39:36
before it says, you know, uh, someone says girded with gladness, but you know, you have loosed
39:41
my sackcloth. I mean, right before he says, you gird me gladness. You've let me get out of the
39:46
morning stage, right? You know, you know, the sackcloth, they would have a sackcloth of them
39:49
themselves when they're mourning. Um, and so I think to your point, I think he has, he's coming
39:53
out of a season of that. And he knows what it's like to praise God. And he knows what it's like to
39:58
met with God. Um, and I do think that this is probably later in his life, just because, you know,
40:03
the temple was, he, he made the preparation to the temple, but the temple actually wasn't made
40:07
until Solomon, you know, which was after his life. And so he got to imply that this would be
40:10
probably later in his life. Right. I think at the end of this, you know, I like the verse, oh,
40:16
Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever. And I just think that's something we have to
40:21
remember. I mean, I think it was last week we talked about going through tough times. How do we
40:26
handle? Um, how do we praise him in the storm? And I think when it comes down to it is, we just
40:31
got to give thanks to him forever. All that we have is because of him. Uh, all as David has shown,
40:37
it's not all done by our hand. It's done by his hand, whether it's blessings, um, or if it's going
40:43
through those tough times, you know, um, I know his hand doesn't cause those tough times, our,
40:48
our sin in this world, cause those tough times, but it's his hand guiding us. And if we just look
40:53
closer and we look for that and, and we reach out to him, I think that in the end, we'll
40:58
close it and gladness. And there's certainly more to say with that is a fantastic place to leave
41:04
that. So guys, uh, we're going to have to leave that there. Um, that's going to wrap up the Psalms
41:08
for us for a little bit. Every go ahead. I do have one thing because we have a little bit of time,
41:12
yeah, you happy I did not pick a Calvinistic song. You do it. But for you, everything you read,
41:19
including restaurant menus is Calvinist in some way. So, but yeah, I do appreciate it. We didn't
41:24
have to talk about election until the very end of this thing. We didn't talk about lecture. I know,
41:28
I know, but you just, you could just let it go. We could have just gone all the way through the
41:32
outro without you bringing something up like that. I figured he'd be proud of it. These are the
41:35
messages I get. I'm like, I just love the reform guy. Is there like beard waxing themselves? It's
41:40
like, I don't have a beard. I know, but you know, 90% reform. I know, because I can have a beard.
41:45
The last 10%. Thank you, John Cooper for teaching me that. Yeah, absolutely. What we'll get after,
41:48
but no, that that's great. The thing with the Psalms is like, you could literally just like
41:52
pick through and then do a random one. And there's going to be something there for you. I mean,
41:56
again, there are Psalms that have been turned into hymns that you guys have sung a lot before.
41:59
Maybe you're into Shane and Shane stuff with that kind of a thing. The Psalms are just a
42:03
great place for us. And that's, Psalms and the Proverbs are going to be what we're going to be
42:06
using on the forging table as kind of palate cleansers, not that you would necessarily need
42:10
that, but like in between larger book studies, these are things that you can kind of drop into
42:14
and drop out of that are going to be kind of wisdom literature for us as we move forward.
42:18
But if you will come back here next Sunday, we're going to be digging into my favorite book of
42:23
the entire Old Testament. And that is Nehemiah. So I talked about Nehemiah a lot on my show.
42:28
And so we're going to be getting into Nehemiah and we're going to be getting into Nehemiah one.
42:32
So guys, make sure that you read that this week. So you're prepared to get after it next week.
42:36
But before we let you go, we are going to do a quick resilience boost.
42:38
