This is Undaunted Life of Man's Podcast, I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into
0:55
it.
0:56
Welcome back to the Forging Table, the mission of Undaunted Life is equipping into pushback
0:59
darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental and physical resilience.
1:03
At the Forging Table, you'll see, okay, that is two noises during my intro.
1:06
We had a clearing of the throat and an elbow fart.
1:08
Come on guys, who was that?
1:09
Who was the clearing of the throat?
1:11
Okay, that was Matt.
1:12
Who was the elbow fart?
1:13
New guy.
1:14
Okay, you know what?
1:15
Okay, that means we know it wasn't the curse.
1:18
I don't know where I stopped, but we're leaving this in there.
1:20
But at the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:24
by digging into God's Word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey
1:27
with us going the opposite way this time.
1:28
That's Matt.
1:29
That's Russell.
1:30
That is Jake.
1:31
Now, guys, here's the thing about Proverbs 12 is, you know, typically how we do things
1:35
at the Forging Table is there is, you know, 30, 40-some odd scriptures, and you can kind
1:40
of read a chunk of scriptures and then talk about it and then get to the next chunk and
1:43
talk about it.
1:45
But this is like all over the place, like one line is about one subject.
1:48
The next line is about a completely different subject, third subject, like it just keeps
1:51
going on and on and on from there.
1:53
So what we decide that we're going to do is we're just going to go around in a circle
1:57
and like figure out like you're going to talk about the one you want to talk about and then
2:00
we'll talk about together and then we'll kind of switch around and go, but it's lame
2:04
if you just go around in a circle like, all right, we're going to start with you and then
2:07
we're just going to go clockwise.
2:08
So that's not what we're going to do.
2:10
I'll get to how we're going to figure out the order and we're going to do it like a like
2:14
a fantasy draft.
2:15
But with that in mind, I get a lot of hate because I don't like golf.
2:18
I got a lot of hate because I don't like coffee, but I also get hate because I constantly
2:22
talk about fantasy football and like how guys give themselves over to it and it's been too
2:26
much time doing it and that and whatever.
2:29
But I play fantasy football with guys and I don't watch the games, but I set my line
2:32
up and all that and you know, it's fun and all that.
2:34
But I want to know the worst fantasy football punishments that you guys have heard of.
2:40
So typically what happens is there will be like eight, 10, 12 guys in a league and some
2:45
guys do money.
2:46
Some people don't, but whoever gets last place, there's typically like a punishment to where
2:50
a guy, it basically keeps a guy from just disengaging and never setting their lineup,
2:54
right?
2:55
And so I've heard of some pretty docile, fancy football punishments, but then I've heard
2:59
of some that were like kind of crazy and kind of ridiculous.
3:02
So what are the worst ones that y'all have heard of?
3:05
Let's hit that first.
3:06
I think the worst one I know of previously I was in, if you got last place, it's not
3:14
like bad in terms of having to do anything or dress, it was expensive.
3:21
Essentially, if you lost, you're responsible for planning and paying the bill for the
3:26
following year's draft party.
3:29
So that could get expensive.
3:30
It got really expensive because, you know, some guy, you know, it varied, you know, sometimes
3:35
it was, okay, you're coming to our home and I've got food and drink like you did not buy
3:42
anything for that draft if you were not last place.
3:47
Everything else was purchased.
3:49
But yeah, some of the guys, it was like, okay, now we're going to Vegas or something like
3:54
that.
3:55
Yeah, that could get a lot worse.
3:56
What about you guys?
3:57
The one I have, it's pretty docile, I guess, as you would say, it was just that we didn't
4:03
even implement it, but that the group gets to pick your team name for the next year.
4:08
Okay.
4:09
That's pretty good.
4:10
But that's, I mean, I got to be honest, I don't know a lot about the fantasy football
4:16
punishment scene.
4:17
I've only played fantasy football three times.
4:20
So there were never any punishments in the leagues that I was playing in.
4:23
So I don't have a good story.
4:25
So I've heard about a few bad ones.
4:28
There are ones that are like embarrassing tattoos where it's like, there's 10 guys in
4:31
the league and the other nine get to decide what tattoo it is and where it goes with, you
4:36
know, they're not going to do like a something on your face or neck or something like that.
4:39
It's somewhat reasonable.
4:40
But guys are having to get some guys are having to get some fairly unfortunate tattoos
4:44
on their tuckuses.
4:45
And so that that's one.
4:46
There's another one where the losing person had to take the ACT, but, but you might think
4:53
to yourself, right?
4:54
Oh, man.
4:55
Oh, if I lose, I'll go take the ACT.
4:56
I'll just put all all C on everything and then I'll just leave.
5:00
No, there's a minimum score.
5:02
Like I think the average score on the ACT or like, I can't forget if it's the average
5:07
or the average low score, something is a 19.
5:09
So it goes up to was it 36 is a perfect ACT, but like a 19 is you're a barely functioning
5:15
sentient human or something like that.
5:18
And so the thing was, is if you didn't score a 19 or above, you had to take it again until
5:22
you did score 19 or above, which, which is the worst.
5:27
There was another one.
5:28
I can't remember if it was fancy, fancy football related or not.
5:32
I know.
5:33
I think this was just a bet between friends and this guy was betting his friend.
5:37
He's like, dude, whatever you tell me to do, I'll do it.
5:39
Like, yeah, you know, the bets 10 grand and whatever you tell me to do, I'll do it.
5:43
And this guy bet his buddy that he wouldn't get breast implants.
5:47
What?
5:48
Yes.
5:49
And so this dude said.
5:51
And yet.
5:52
This will you know?
5:53
No, my Z's are now would not be people that I would know.
5:57
So this dude literally like they agreed upon.
6:00
It was like, all right, you pay for the surgery and I get 10 grand and I will get breast implants
6:06
and I will keep them for a year and they shook on it and straight up did it.
6:11
Dude, this story was on like date line.
6:12
So anyone out there that's like, this is inappropriate for children.
6:15
This was on like date line NBC like on Friday night.
6:18
This dude literally got the breast implants and hung on to him for a year and, you know,
6:22
got his 10K.
6:23
Well, I mean, there's some vagary.
6:24
I mean, like pectoral implants.
6:26
I mean, you know, like that doesn't sound like that's what it does.
6:30
Let me break it.
6:31
He got boobs, Jake.
6:32
He got moves.
6:33
Good.
6:34
I needed the clarification.
6:35
Okay.
6:36
Thank you.
6:37
Okay.
6:38
Can I do you a second point?
6:39
Okay.
6:40
Yeah.
6:41
It's like that's not a punishment.
6:42
It's like, oh, you're going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger from his like Olympia
6:46
days.
6:47
All right.
6:48
But here's the thing.
6:49
So we need to determine our draft.
6:50
One thing do we do or we need to do here?
6:51
Do we need to do like a snake draft where if you're, you know, if you're the fourth pick,
6:54
you get four and five or like, do we snake through or do we just start back over?
6:58
We need to agree.
6:59
How are we going to do do our little draft thing?
7:01
Oh, man.
7:02
Snake.
7:03
It's too complicated.
7:05
Thanks to complicated.
7:06
Okay.
7:07
We all did go to college guys, but apparently it's complicated.
7:09
So we're just going to go around in a circle, but I couldn't think of like a fair way to
7:13
determine like how we were going to do it.
7:15
So the fairest way I could think to do it was to make a duck race.
7:19
Okay.
7:20
So here's the thing.
7:21
I am online.
7:22
Online stopwatch.com.
7:23
So what you do is you put all the names in and then it randomizes a duck for you.
7:29
So I am Batman duck, which is pretty awesome.
7:32
Matt, you're Spartan duck.
7:33
Okay.
7:34
Which is pretty cool.
7:35
Apparently no one thinks Jake is cool because Jake is just a regular old rubber duckie.
7:38
And then we got us like Ernie intended.
7:40
You are purple with with stars on it.
7:43
Okay.
7:44
Now this is a 10 second race.
7:45
You're a peacock.
7:46
Okay.
7:47
Can we get a peek out?
7:48
That's what I think.
7:49
This is not a set.
7:50
I think Jake's going to win.
7:51
I didn't get to.
7:52
Okay.
7:53
You think Jake's going to win a certainly possible, but this is how we're going to determine
7:54
draft order.
7:55
Okay.
7:56
So guys, are we ready?
7:57
Are we ready?
7:58
Is everybody ready for this race?
7:59
This is incredible.
8:00
Okay.
8:01
Here we go.
8:02
We're going out.
8:03
Russell's going.
8:04
Oh Russell.
8:05
Oh, but here comes Matt.
8:07
Here comes Matt down the back stretch.
8:08
Russell.
8:09
Hang on.
8:10
Oh, yeah.
8:11
Oh, what a random one of random.
8:14
It was random.
8:15
You want me to do it again?
8:16
You want me to do it again?
8:18
Because what I saw.
8:19
I don't appreciate.
8:20
I don't appreciate that this site.
8:22
He's still going.
8:24
My dog is not going behind just like the fat kid in the race, which is so, but you didn't
8:30
come and last.
8:31
Is this a victory lap?
8:32
Yeah.
8:33
So dude, I'm just going to keep going.
8:34
Like I ran the hundred.
8:35
I'm running out of the stadium.
8:36
The sports world.
8:37
That's right.
8:38
That's right.
8:39
Keep running.
8:40
Don't don't get mad.
8:42
I mean, winners focus on winning losers focus on winners.
8:45
Just remember that guys.
8:46
So the draft order is me, then we got Russ, then we got Jake and then Maddie, you are
8:51
following up at the beginning, which are at the end, which would have been okay if we
8:53
did snake draft.
8:54
But apparently that was too complicated.
8:55
Oh, I finished last.
8:56
Is that what happened?
8:57
Yeah.
8:58
You finished last.
8:59
You finished last.
9:00
Tell me it was way down, but to make it up to everybody and to make it up to you, what
9:05
you're going to do is you were going to read Proverbs 12.
9:08
You're going to read the whole thing by yourself and then we will go ahead and get into individual
9:13
scriptures because that is one thing that we started doing early on is we are reading
9:16
the entire chapter of that particular book of the Bible.
9:19
So I think we should continue that even though we aren't going to be commenting on the entire
9:22
thing.
9:23
So Matt, if you would mind, Proverbs 12, please.
9:26
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
9:30
A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of evil devices he condemns.
9:35
No one is established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will never be moved.
9:40
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness
9:45
in his bones.
9:46
The thoughts of the righteous are just.
9:48
The councils of the wicked are deceitful.
9:51
The words of the wicked lie and wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.
9:56
The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand.
10:02
A man is commended according to his good sense, but one of twisted mind is despised, better
10:08
to be lowly and have a servant than to play the great man and lack bread.
10:13
Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked
10:17
is cruel.
10:19
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits
10:23
lack sense.
10:25
Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evil doers, but the root of the righteous bears
10:30
fruit.
10:31
An evil man is ensnared by the transgressions of his lips, but the righteous escapes from
10:37
trouble.
10:38
From the fruit of his mouth, a man is satisfied with good, and the work of a man's hand comes
10:43
back to him.
10:44
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
10:49
The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult.
10:55
Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit.
11:02
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings
11:07
healing.
11:09
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
11:14
This seat is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.
11:19
No ill befalls righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble.
11:23
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.
11:28
A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims folly.
11:34
The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.
11:40
Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
11:44
One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads the mestre.
11:50
Whoever is slothful will not roast his game, but the diligent man will get precious wealth.
11:56
In the path of the righteousness is life, and in its pathway, there is no death.
12:02
Thank you very much, Matt.
12:03
So we're going to dig in and who won the duck race?
12:06
Oh, I did.
12:07
So the Batman duck is a superior duck.
12:08
Sorry about you guys, but I'm going to go ahead and pick the first one.
12:11
And I really hope I pick one that someone's all like, oh, man, I want that to be mine.
12:16
So I'm going to go with one that I have a feeling, because this is part of the thing
12:19
about a draft.
12:20
You have to be defensive in your draft as well, because you're, you might draft a player that
12:24
you don't necessarily want, but you don't want the guy behind you to get that player.
12:27
So you're going to take him off the board.
12:29
So I have a feeling that Russ was going to pick the scripture.
12:32
I'm going to pick.
12:33
So I'm going to hit it.
12:34
So I'm going to hit it.
12:35
I can't see your notes, man.
12:36
I'm not cheating, but I'm taking Proverbs 12 verse four.
12:40
I'm taking it.
12:41
I'm taking it.
12:42
Okay.
12:43
Well, this just got super lame with that big build up and there's nothing here on the
12:45
back end.
12:46
So I'll read verse four, an excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings
12:49
shame is like rottenness in his bones.
12:52
So here's something that I want to talk about.
12:55
So one of the, there are a lot of great things about doing undaunted life and doing the speaking
13:00
engagements, doing the podcasts, the devotionals and all that, but one of the, I won't call
13:05
it unfortunate things, but one of the heavier things is I will have strangers reach out
13:10
to me to shoulder parts of their burden, which is unfortunate because it's like, have, did
13:15
you not hear what I was saying about the foxhole, how you need guys around you, that can shoulder
13:18
part of that burden and all that.
13:19
And here you are reaching out to a podcaster that you don't know, but also at the same
13:22
time, I know that there's roughly 600 episodes out there.
13:26
And if you listen to all those, you kind of feel like you know me, right?
13:29
It's kind of like when people come up to Joe Rogan in public, they think that they know
13:31
him because they've listened to him for thousands and thousands of hours, right?
13:35
And so I know that there's a little bit of that.
13:38
So I will have guys come up to me and reveal to me the worst thing that's ever happened
13:42
to them, right?
13:43
It could be, could be a sickness, it could be something that their father did to them
13:46
when they were a child.
13:47
It could be any number of things, but on this particular thing, I will get guys who maybe
13:53
don't have an excellent wife or I'll get guys that have a wife that maybe violated their
14:01
marriage, maybe, maybe lied, maybe had an affair, maybe left them, maybe left them took
14:06
the kids and then like turn the kids on them.
14:08
I had a guy send me an email.
14:09
It was heartbreaking.
14:10
He's like, look, I'm in the middle of this brutal situation where I'm co-parenting with
14:14
a woman that hates me and I can tell she's saying these horrible things to our children.
14:18
So when the kids come over, they're a little bit standoffish towards me.
14:21
A bunch of bad situations.
14:24
And I'm reminded of some advice Joby gave me a long time ago, just generalized advice
14:28
for husbands, which is, you know, he was talking about in terms of ministry, but it's like your
14:32
wife can be the launch pad for your ministry or the ceiling and it's like, you got to make
14:38
sure your wife is not the ceiling and that applies to everybody.
14:41
Like if you're a business owner or if you're an entrepreneur or if you're just an employee
14:45
working somewhere, like your wife is either your ceiling or your launch pad.
14:49
And so I did want to talk about that right there because I mean, there's so many guys
14:53
that have shared with me like, look, my wife had an affair.
14:55
She had this, you know, it was this terrible situation and like, I don't know what to do
14:58
and I'm embarrassed, but like, do I stay, do I go and again, they're asking me and I'm
15:03
like, man, I don't know anything about you or her or your situation and all that.
15:08
But it's just like, this is so true and excellent.
15:11
Wow.
15:12
Wife is a crown of her husband because Russ, you mentioned that last week.
15:14
You just mentioned that casually about your bride that she is, is your crown and it's
15:19
kind of like, okay, you know, did you make her your crown?
15:23
Was she given you given to you as a crown?
15:25
How do you cultivate her crown over time? How do you keep it shiny and, you know, maybe
15:29
add jewels to it or something like that, but I just wanted to kind of open that up about
15:33
that particular scripture.
15:34
Right.
15:35
Go for it, Jay.
15:38
Well, I was just, I was actually going to defer over to Matt, big over to what Kyle was
15:42
just talking about in terms of the idea of shouldering the burden of sin, you know, people
15:50
reaching out to Kyle and the sermon you shared with us on the fishing trip.
15:56
Yeah.
15:57
I'm just going to set you up and then surprise you.
16:00
Well, okay.
16:01
So in terms, I don't know, I'm trying to think how that, how I would.
16:06
The sermon was the out of body experience.
16:08
Same.
16:09
Yeah.
16:10
Well, okay.
16:11
So in terms of sin, like having, you know, having someone there to burden or to carry
16:17
our burdens with us is the story that comes to my mind is the story of Sam Wise and Frodo
16:24
in the Lord of the Rings.
16:26
Sam is Frodo's best friend, but he's also his gardener, which is kind of funny.
16:31
I think that's kind of a throwback to like he is there for Frodo, like through, through
16:36
it all.
16:37
And I think it's kind of a kind of a throwback to the Bible where the women think Jesus is
16:39
a gardener.
16:41
And anyway, Frodo's task with carrying the ring to Mordor, to its destruction.
16:48
And I'm sorry if I'm spoiling the movie or the books for anybody who doesn't.
16:51
It's like 25 years old guys in the books in the books or even older.
16:55
So he's got to carry this ring, the ring of power, the ring to rule them all.
16:59
He's got to carry it to its destruction.
17:01
And that's the task.
17:02
He's been, he's been dealt and he carries it all the way and they're at the, the bottom
17:07
of Mount Doom and they've got, that's, that's the last part of their journey.
17:11
And he's like, they've, they've come a long way and they're not in the shire anymore.
17:16
And they are, they've been through hell physically and mentally and emotionally.
17:21
And he is, he is physically unable to carry the burden of the ring, which in a lot of
17:28
ways is like sin and he just can't go.
17:33
Like his body just doesn't move and Sam who is his best friend and has been on this journey
17:38
with him this entire time.
17:40
One of the, you know, the most famous lines of the book and the movie he, he literally
17:44
picks Frodo up.
17:45
He throws him over his shoulder and the book describes it like he throws it over like a,
17:48
like a sack of potatoes, like it's a nothing.
17:50
He's been on the same journey with him and he finds the strength within him to just throw
17:54
his friend over his bag and he says, I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and,
17:59
and it with it.
18:01
And he carries Frodo up Mount Doom.
18:05
And in one of the most, one of the bravest acts of three AM friendship that has ever been
18:10
written, Sam carries Frodo up the mountain so he can complete his quest to destroy this
18:15
ring.
18:16
And spoiler alert, he does, he, he ends up throwing the ring in to the fire and it is
18:22
destroyed for all time.
18:25
But if you're not walking with, so I think that one of the big takeaways from that is
18:29
if you're not walking with somebody and you're not in fellowship with somebody, one, you'll
18:33
never be able to pick them up.
18:34
And two, you'll never be the one that's being carried.
18:36
So that's kind of what I get out of that.
18:40
Is that where you're looking for?
18:41
I was.
18:42
Okay.
18:43
If you didn't, he was just going to preach and keep going on that.
18:45
I loved it though.
18:46
Okay.
18:47
But I mean, that's, I mean, but to your point, I mean, you know, carrying, carrying some
18:51
of this on your own and, and these gentlemen who are reaching out to you and asking you
18:57
for advice.
18:58
I mean, I totally can understand the idea that, you know, you're spending four hours
19:04
a week with me.
19:06
You are.
19:07
Yeah.
19:08
And, and I feel like we have this relationship and obviously you've been speaking into me
19:12
over and over again.
19:15
But if you're going to have anyone shoulder that load with you, it still goes back to
19:19
that shoulder to shoulder thing.
19:21
Yep.
19:22
You know, if, if, if reaching out to Kyle's nice guy is he is reaching out to Kyle.
19:27
If you don't have that shoulder, shoulder activity with him, reaching out to him, asking
19:31
him to shoulder your load, he's probably going to pray for you.
19:35
I have no doubt about that.
19:37
But at the same time, you know, find people next to you, close to you, find those band
19:43
of brothers, if you will, that will allow you to assist you with carrying that sin.
19:49
When in addition to that, you have to find guys, I mean, that wasn't exactly where I
19:53
thought we would go with this.
19:54
But I think it's fine.
19:55
Hey, I was, you, you brought up the, you brought up this turn into, I'm turning it back.
20:01
Yeah.
20:02
Yeah.
20:03
What is this?
20:04
A good time to say Laura, the rings is super lame.
20:05
And I fell asleep during the second one.
20:06
Was that a good time?
20:07
Okay.
20:08
Well, let's, let's get off that before I get any more hate mail.
20:10
Wow.
20:11
But getting back to this, like, you need to surround yourself with guys who will take
20:14
care of your crown if something happens to you because that's the other thing, like.
20:19
So when if something happens to me, I don't want anybody touching my crown.
20:22
No, no, no.
20:23
I said care for, I said care for your crown.
20:28
I don't mean service to your crown.
20:29
If you know what I'm saying, like that's, that's kind of what, so one of the reasons
20:32
why my wife and I were, was started on this journey years ago of trying to find a different
20:37
church was because the church we went to, which was live church, big church, you know,
20:41
the TED talks of Bible versus great music, everything's funny, everything's good, is
20:44
I realized one day that if something happened to me, no one at the church would know about
20:48
it.
20:49
And we were volunteers.
20:50
Like we were there every week volunteering, like, so we were known.
20:52
But if something happened to me, no one at the church would have known they needed to
20:55
go to the house to make sure Kelsey was okay.
20:57
And so there was no one that was going to be able to care for my crown if I was gone.
21:02
And so the church certainly has a role in that.
21:04
The ecclesia that you're a part of has a role in that.
21:06
But for you, your foxhole of guys, if something happens to you, you need guys that are not
21:10
just going to pray for your wife, but are going to do stuff.
21:13
And I'm not saying prayer is not important and I'm not saying prayer, it's not sufficient
21:17
either.
21:18
But you need those, I'm on my way, friends to where it's like, all right, Kyle's out of
21:21
the fight now.
21:22
Maybe he's dead or he's, you know, something's happened to him, but, you know, to be able
21:26
to love your brother enough that you are there to make sure that you care for your, for their
21:31
spouse.
21:32
Right.
21:33
And I think there's something there too on the fact that there are a lot of guys.
21:35
So whenever we read this, that an excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she
21:39
brings shame.
21:40
There's a lot of guys that maybe move their wives into the other category.
21:46
But it's not that she's bringing them shame, it's that they're just not treating her like
21:49
a crown.
21:50
You know, like, there's a lot of, a lot of us have good wives that we don't treat like
21:57
it's the most valuable possession.
21:59
What does the crown do?
22:00
It shows everyone else your authority.
22:03
Like, like your wife should be one of the main reasons why you believe in yourself because
22:07
she is the thing that is indicating that to other people that there is something here
22:12
that provides this person with authority.
22:15
And I also, there's something about the idea that the crown is on the outside, you know,
22:19
whenever we have a crown.
22:20
It's on the outside, it shows.
22:22
But it says that the shame, the one that's the shame is like rotten, rottenness in the
22:27
bones.
22:28
Like, I wonder how many guys too, you don't see that going on, like, but you can kind of
22:33
feel it.
22:34
Like, if you're around the guy enough, you can kind of feel one of those guys that, and
22:37
just something about his soul is just kind of crippling.
22:41
And I wonder if sometimes that's not it.
22:45
Proverbs 31, to your point, Proverbs 31, verse 23, her husband is known in the gates
22:53
when he sits among the elders of the land.
22:57
The challenge, my wife and I talk about this all the time, Stacey Diane Post bought very
23:03
low on the stock of Jake Winkler, okay.
23:07
I have no idea why that woman decided that I was worthy of her, but I thank God every
23:12
day that she did.
23:14
Fact is, I mean, I would not be anywhere.
23:20
Like there's no chance I am where I met today without her.
23:24
And that was through encouragement, patience, a whole lot of grace, and just, it's hard
23:36
to put in the words, just because she has just been, she's lifted me up.
23:42
And I know I'm a heavy guy and she's tiny, and that's no small effort on her part.
23:48
But she is, she's my crown.
23:52
I mean, she is, and I would say that every single accomplishment I have in this life,
23:58
every single one, it's ultimately owed to God, but I would never have believed I could
24:04
even do it without her.
24:08
So she's your Sam.
24:09
She just, she is my Sam shoulder.
24:10
And for those of you who've met, yeah, if you've known, if you know my wife, you would
24:15
know how tall a task that would be to throw me over her shoulder.
24:19
I can't wait to see it in person, but the next time I see her, I don't have to demand
24:23
that that happens.
24:24
Well, at this rate, we're not even going to get to you, Matt, because you were so slow
24:27
in the duck race.
24:28
So we kind of need to speed this up a little bit.
24:30
I tried to ruin Russ's talk, but here we are with the number two pick in the forging table,
24:34
Proverbs 12 draft, Russ used to selects.
24:36
All right, I'm going to throw in, I can do multiple, right?
24:40
I'm just, I'm just doing one.
24:42
All right.
24:43
15 16.
24:44
Okay.
24:45
The way of the fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
24:49
The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores insult.
24:55
So I recently read a book, I believe both these guys read the same book and then not a book
25:02
club.
25:03
But it was, I'm really bad with the names, the name of God, the name God has a name.
25:09
God has a name.
25:10
No, God has a name.
25:12
But he talked about this word, slow to anger and that the word of God describes this.
25:20
This is going to be a sorry, Joby, for sure.
25:23
Erica, Erica, Priam, Erica, that's, I think, to sorry, I put the wrong, I put the wrong
25:31
syllable in the wrong, wrong words on the wrong syllable.
25:37
But that word, that word meant long of nostrils.
25:40
And it was this idea to be able to, I know you're not supposed to breathe into a podcast
25:46
mic, but that idea to make your point, you can.
25:50
To take a breath, to be able to take in what's going on and be, be the type of person that
25:58
doesn't react right away, the point that the author was making is the fact that there is
26:04
so much said about God and his slowness to anger, his mercy.
26:09
Now, there are other attributes to God and people, sometimes in the Old Testament, they
26:12
get hung up on those other attributes of God's anger and all this.
26:16
Well, those are attributes.
26:18
But the one that is described the most is how he is slow to anger with his people.
26:23
And this, you know, this proverb says it exactly.
26:28
If you want to judge whether or not you are being a fool, see how you're reacting to things.
26:34
Are you really quick to react negatively to things?
26:36
Do people always know what's on your heart about something just because something happens
26:42
and you just spout off, you know, and that's something that's been really convicting me
26:45
after I read that, reading this and just kind of a long journey through that is, I am one
26:52
of those people that just kind of fires off what I think, especially to the people that
26:56
I'm closest to, the people that I'm not close to, they get a little bit of a buffer.
27:01
People I'm closest to get full force what I think all the time.
27:06
And that's foolish.
27:08
I mean, according to the word, I'm acting like a fool at times there.
27:12
Actually, that's kind of surprising to hear you say, because, you know, we've been, the
27:17
funny thing about you and I is like, we met a long time ago, but we've had long stretches
27:21
of just not being around each other, just because not because anything happened, but
27:25
it's like, your work took you here, my work took you there.
27:27
And then we always seem to kind of find our way back to our friendship and to kind of
27:32
being around each other.
27:33
And I would not have pegged you as a guy that's like, I'm going to give you a piece
27:36
of my mind at all times, like you seem fairly prudent in my estimation.
27:40
Yeah.
27:41
And I think that what I said, you know, full transparency, what I said about the people
27:46
that are closest to me, get the most of my fixation.
27:51
I would say in this as well, the part if 16 is in the prudent ignores an insult.
27:57
One of one of the David Thompsonism.
27:58
So that's my dad.
27:59
One of the pieces of wisdom that he gave me, whether on purpose or on accident was don't
28:03
sweat the small stuff, because I would always sweat the small stuff.
28:07
And so when you're a kid, you know, we've all heard the example, you know, you break
28:10
up with your girlfriend when you're 15 and you'll never think you'll love again, like
28:13
and you know, when you see a kid that's in the middle of heartbreak is like, well, that's
28:17
the worst thing they've ever experienced.
28:19
And you've lived a lot more life and you know, a lot more pain is coming for them.
28:24
And so you're kind of like, it's easy to say, don't sweat the small stuff, but that's true.
28:28
And you know, for me, and I've talked about before, I carry that into what I do with the
28:31
show because if I based the content that I talk about in the way that I talk about it
28:36
on people's feedback and on whether or not they like it or whether or not they want to
28:39
hear it, my show would be super lame and bland, because I would just try to stay down the
28:44
middle and try not to, you know, try not to rock the boat or anything like that.
28:47
But that wasn't what I was called to come to this planet to do, you know, if you have
28:50
more of that profit mindset, it's like, no, we'd like when people say you speak truth
28:54
to power and they're like a social justice where it's like, they don't know what that
28:56
means.
28:57
It's the profits in the Bible.
28:58
It's the Elijah's it's guys like that to where it's like, no, this, this is how it's
29:02
going to be and I don't care how you feel about it.
29:04
Like we're just going to tell you like it is because in the only way that you can do
29:08
that is if you don't sweat the small stuff.
29:10
So that that's what I got with with verse 16.
29:13
15.
29:14
I love that.
29:15
I mean, that was part of Russell's, you read that one too, right?
29:20
Yes.
29:21
Yeah, he cheated.
29:22
Okay.
29:23
He did too.
29:24
Yeah.
29:25
He did too.
29:26
Yeah.
29:27
So 15 to me is a call to the proper way of leadership, both, you know, whether that be
29:35
as a pastor or as a father in your own home or even as, you know, if you're owned a business
29:44
and you're a boss or you're a manager of people, go back to, you know, the, George Washington
29:51
as a leader has all, I mean, most people think of him.
29:54
I mean, as one of the great leaders of our times and one of the reasons he was so good
30:01
was his goal was not to be the person that was right.
30:07
His goal was to surround his himself with a whole lot of people who knew a lot more than
30:12
he did and then listen.
30:16
And if his idea was not the one that everybody landed on, so be it.
30:21
Yep.
30:22
It's not that big a deal and I think it's hard to remember that.
30:26
I mean, there's a leader in your own home or as a leader in your job.
30:33
It's hard to remember that sometimes it, you're not going to have the answer.
30:39
And honestly, if you're the person who always has the answer and says, this is what we're
30:42
doing, the people below you are actually not going to want to have your leadership much
30:49
longer.
30:50
Well, and it's kind of, you have to be counter cultural in that because we're in a culture
30:53
that prizes accomplishments and your accolades.
30:58
And if you don't achieve that by not getting your idea, be the one that's used or whatever
31:04
the case is, like that can knock us down a peg or two in our own minds.
31:09
And so I think we're kind of in this society where we're almost like naturally inclined
31:16
to go, okay, it's got to be mine.
31:18
It's got to be mine because all the accolades, I have to get the accolades.
31:23
Yeah, there is it some counter cultural wisdom, which out of the Bible is counter cultural.
31:28
So I would say most of it is.
31:30
Yeah.
31:31
That is a pretty solid second overall pick.
31:33
But with the third overall pick in the 2024 Proverbs 12 draft, Jake Winkler selects the
31:39
sensible offensive lineman is going third in the draft now.
31:42
So Proverbs 1224, the hand of the diligent will rule while the slothful will be put to
31:50
a forced labor.
31:53
Oh, right.
31:54
You said that with a lot of enjoyment.
31:57
Oh, man.
31:59
Come on.
32:00
All right.
32:01
So here's the thing.
32:04
So many people think that they should be in certain spots that they've quote unquote earned.
32:12
And number one, just remember, we deserve nothing in this life.
32:17
You don't deserve anything.
32:20
This indiligence in what God has called you to do.
32:24
If you are doing what God has called you to do, you are not going to get.
32:28
You may get some accolades, but nothing's going to come immediate.
32:34
It's a slow painstaking process that requires, you know, what do you say to your kids, Russ?
32:41
Say that again, all the way, oh, yeah, obey all the way right away and with a happy heart.
32:46
That's it.
32:47
If you are trying to accomplish something on your own, a, you won't get there on your
32:51
own, you're going to need, for me, I needed that encouraging wife and I needed the Lord.
32:58
But I would also add to that.
33:04
So many people think that they are working hard and just remember, I mean, I'm going to
33:12
say something and people are not going to like it, but that's okay.
33:16
We have a five day work week, right?
33:19
How many days does God call us to work?
33:21
Six.
33:24
And then we wonder sometimes why we aren't getting what we want.
33:29
We have sloth built into our system already.
33:32
We are called to work six days a week.
33:35
I'm not saying that everybody needs to work on a Saturday, but at the same time, I'm also
33:39
telling you, like, understand that if you are doing what you were supposed to be doing,
33:43
try to remember, I'm trying to look up, here it is, work at your job as you would work
33:49
unto the Lord.
33:51
I don't think people do that.
33:52
I think most people complain about their job.
33:54
I think they complain about who they work for.
33:57
I think they get frustrated whenever they don't get what they want, thinking that they've
34:01
earned it or they deserve it or what they want as fast as they want it.
34:06
Correct.
34:07
And so just understand that if this is what God wants for you and you've put your trust
34:12
in that, that you should be working every day as you would work unto the Lord.
34:17
Now, and there's no better example of that, and we are still, like, suffering as a whole
34:23
world of consequences of one man not being patient enough to wait for God's promises
34:29
in the birth of Ishmael from Abraham, and he wasn't diligent enough to trust that what
34:37
the Lord said will be, or in God's, I think the way God puts it is what I say is done
34:44
already.
34:46
And we're still seeing the consequences of someone who wasn't diligent in that.
34:52
I like the idea that sloth will be put to forced labor.
34:55
I mean, that's not, that seems to worry.
34:58
You got the enjoyment.
34:59
I did.
35:00
I did.
35:01
Because here's the thing.
35:02
If you aren't working with that happy heart, if you're not working all the way as you would
35:05
work unto the Lord, honestly, you're being slothful.
35:09
You're being slothful, and therefore you're being put to forced labor.
35:13
It's a state of mind.
35:15
You cannot work.
35:17
If you are working, you cannot basically say this is what God has called me to do and
35:23
then be bitter about it.
35:25
It doesn't work.
35:26
When we live in an era right now, I don't know if you guys have heard about this concept
35:29
of quiet quitting.
35:30
So this is a Gen Z thing where basically what they will do is they don't, they don't want
35:36
to quit their job because they still like being paid, but they will stop giving any
35:41
effort.
35:42
And so you may have seen some, you know, Instagram reels or TikTok videos come out where people
35:45
will, you know, selfie video themselves doing a, an assessment or a quarterly.
35:52
I can't think of the word, but like whenever they're sitting there with their boss getting
35:54
like an assess and all those types of things.
35:57
And one of the more recent ones that I saw that kind of went everywhere was there was
36:01
a guy who worked in some sort of software sales and in the previous quarter, he was the number
36:06
one salesman for the entire company.
36:09
But whenever he achieved that, he didn't get anything with it.
36:12
So he didn't get a bonus.
36:13
He didn't get a race.
36:14
He didn't get any extra perks or any of that.
36:16
He was just number one.
36:18
And so as they do with most good salespeople is if you hit this quota, well, let's just
36:22
add 10% to that quota.
36:24
And now we're going to reach for this, right?
36:26
And so he's doing his evaluation.
36:27
He went from the number one salesperson in the company to the very bottom, like of his
36:32
sales group and they're just like, Hey, you know, what happened, like all those types
36:36
of things.
36:37
And he was just like, yeah, I busted my tail and I went over above and beyond and I got
36:42
nothing for it.
36:44
I got the same amount of pay because this wasn't like commission base.
36:46
It was like quota base and then you know, bonus and stuff like I didn't get a bonus.
36:50
I didn't get any of that type of stuff.
36:51
And so I just kind of realized I was going to get paid roughly the same amount if I gave
36:55
a full effort as if I gave no effort.
36:57
And so, and his point was your evil capitalism's the worst, like y'all are selfish and y'all
37:03
are keeping all this money for yourselves and blah, blah, blah.
37:05
But what he missed on that entire thing, shock of all shocks, dude got fired, but and he
37:10
deserved deserve to get fired didn't see that coming.
37:12
Now, if you want to have a discussion about incentivization for your employees and specifically
37:17
incentivizing salespeople who are your race horses, like I get it, like I'm all for that.
37:22
Like I'm all about you, what you kill.
37:24
But what he missed on this whole thing is that you are not entitled to that job.
37:28
You have to earn it to keep it.
37:30
And the thing was is also if he had been working as unto the Lord, he wouldn't have been as
37:33
concerned about the bonus or the atta boys or the error they need, that type of thing.
37:38
And I use the same example for me all the time.
37:40
When I was doing episode seven of this podcast or episode six or something like that, I put
37:46
in the same level of effort and preparation as I do now.
37:49
At that time, I had I didn't have a dozen listeners that didn't live in my house, right?
37:53
And now we have considerably more than that.
37:56
And I'm putting the same level of effort in, even though I know there's way more people
38:00
tuning in because I'm not working for y'all.
38:03
I'm not working for the people on the other side of the microphone.
38:06
I'm working as unto the Lord.
38:07
And if if I get taken home today, I will have left behind some devotionals and a few hundred
38:13
episodes that will help equipment around the globe to push back darkness, which is what
38:16
I was put here to do on the first in the first place.
38:18
And so if I don't get a bonus, if I don't get more sponsors, if I don't get more donors,
38:22
if I don't get this, that and the other thing, that wasn't the point to begin with.
38:25
But if it becomes the point, then I'm out of whack.
38:30
The quiet quitting.
38:33
There's another thing that people are doing now called moonlighting.
38:36
I don't know if you've heard about this.
38:38
So they're signing on, you know, because remote works become more common now.
38:44
They're signing on.
38:45
They got a job.
38:46
And then they will actually get a second job.
38:51
But then they will only work basically half days for both.
38:57
And then basically just get paid for two different jobs, not disclosing that I'm sometimes working
39:04
for a direct competitor.
39:06
Listen, I mean, and I'm biased here.
39:10
Maybe you guys are going to say, well, okay, you know, he owns a business and, you know,
39:15
he obviously is going to have a very strong opinion on this stuff.
39:18
But honestly, I don't see how you can be saying that you are following Christ and then doing
39:25
stuff like quiet quitting or doing stuff like moonlighting.
39:31
I don't see how you can find that ethical.
39:33
I don't know how you square that with what God is calling you to do and working and being
39:38
honest and forthright.
39:41
There's, there's, I mean, you settle up every two weeks with your employer.
39:45
I mean, I've always thought that you settle up every two weeks.
39:47
But at the same time, there is a, an honesty and a truthfulness that should be going both
39:53
ways at the same time.
39:55
But even let's say you work for somebody who is a tyrant and is not truthful or anything
40:01
like that, that doesn't give you license to be the other way, to be the same way.
40:06
You have to, if nothing else, look at it this way, you could literally be the light of Christ
40:12
in that building that is supposed to be ministering to that person to show them what it looks
40:17
like to be right with God.
40:18
100%.
40:19
Shoot, we can, there's lots of ways that we justify the flash and that's, that's really
40:23
what that is.
40:24
Like we're justifying our flash when we decide, you know what, I'm going to just not put any
40:28
effort like that guy like, man, I got nothing for this.
40:31
Like that's, that's just giving into the flesh and then justifying it by being the victim.
40:37
And that's getting yourself permission.
40:39
Big surprise.
40:40
The CPA after April 15th is going like I'm tired of people not wanting to work.
40:43
Yeah.
40:44
That's your cross to bear, sir, not ours.
40:47
We're not shouldering any of that, but that is the third pick.
40:50
But now with the fourth pick and the 2024 Proverbs 12 draft, OG Matt Grasmer selects.
40:58
Proverbs 12, 23, all right, hit it, 12, 23 is a prudent man conceals knowledge, but the
41:06
heart of fools proclaims folly.
41:09
And I kind of went with this one and kind of piggybacks off of 15 and 16.
41:13
And over the course of my business career, one of the best pieces of advice that I've
41:19
ever received is your leadership is defined by the knowledge you gain rather than the
41:26
knowledge you portray.
41:29
And that's, is a lot, I think again, your leadership is defined more by the knowledge
41:36
that you gain rather than the knowledge that you portray.
41:41
And what that means is in a society that within the cult of the expert, it's always
41:49
what, what am I putting out there?
41:51
The more content I'm putting out there, the more people think that I am an expert of whatever
41:58
field the better off I am.
42:00
And to your point about Washington, he was, he was very, very good at receiving knowledge
42:07
and taking it in and then saying, okay, of all the things that I've just digested, what
42:12
is the best course of action?
42:13
Because at the end of the day, the buck stops with me.
42:15
I'm the one that's, that's got to make the decision.
42:18
So okay, my ego aside, maybe my idea wasn't the best, but old Johnny over there had a great
42:25
advice and a great idea.
42:27
Let's do that.
42:28
So the, the asking good questions comes into play then that's what that's what I think
42:33
of with a 23, like I don't, as a prudent man, I don't have to project my knowledge, fools
42:40
do that all day long.
42:42
You're going to know.
42:43
So who's going to tell you they're a fool.
42:45
So a derivative of that is something that I learned in sales, which is you don't get paid
42:49
on the information you give out.
42:50
You get paid on the information you bring in.
42:52
That's so true.
42:53
And so when you're sitting down and because I used to be in these, you know, financial
42:56
sales processes and you know, that, that can get really weird because you're talking about
42:59
people's money and you're talking about what happens if they die or if they get hurt and
43:02
how are they going to, you know, support their family and all that kind of stuff.
43:05
And so what a lot of people will do is they'll just start selling, people will sit down and
43:09
then they just start selling.
43:10
They take them through their sales process.
43:11
You know, you've seen these people that are trying to sell houses and they, they're immediately
43:15
just talking about features and benefits features and benefits features and benefits.
43:18
And yet they're not asking any questions because the thing is, is what I've learned in sales
43:22
and any good sales person knows this is the person you're selling to will tell you exactly
43:25
what it'll take to sell them.
43:27
If you ask the right questions, like they, they will flat out tell you, uh, yeah.
43:31
I'm looking for a place that's close to my kid's school.
43:34
Uh, I want a big farmhouse style sink in the kitchen and I want big windows on the second
43:38
floor.
43:39
But if you just walk into the house and you start, well, here's the garage and here's
43:42
the hallway and here's the kitchen and here's the whatever and you're not even asking them.
43:47
They're telling you if you will just get out of your own way.
43:51
But if you're worried about getting through the five steps to your sales process, you'll
43:54
never get there.
43:55
That's right.
43:56
Is that all that there is to be said about?
44:02
The reason why you're at the bottom of the draft order, I was, I was loved to quote, um,
44:07
I always loved the quote, you know, better to keep your mouth shut, be thoughtful than
44:11
to open it and remove all doubt.
44:13
Yep.
44:14
And you know, I will say, I think there's something in this verse to stoicism, you know, this
44:20
idea that quiet and I would almost go, it's quiet wisdom, uh, Stacy's granddad, uh, Albert,
44:28
I always thought that like, to me was one of the wisest, most godly men I've ever met.
44:34
And he did not talk a lot.
44:37
I mean, he was pretty quiet, but you knew that if you needed an answer, he's the one
44:44
you wanted to talk to.
44:45
I mean, and I think all of us probably have someone like that that we can point to and
44:50
say, if I was really up against it, this is the person I know I would want to talk to
44:55
about it.
44:56
Right.
44:57
Who'd like Vinny Jones in, um, gone in 60 seconds.
45:00
I don't remember his character's name, but he doesn't say a word the entire movie.
45:04
That is the first gone in 60 seconds reference on this show.
45:07
Go get it.
45:08
So he's just bullet to Tony.
45:10
No, that maybe it may be bullet to Tony.
45:13
And he's this, wait, is this the original gone in 60 seconds or the Nicolas Cage one?
45:17
The nickel, the Nicholas Cage one.
45:20
Okay.
45:21
There's an original gone was almost, I'm almost certain there is don't lose your, your spot
45:26
in the story, because we need to fact check this in real time.
45:28
Okay.
45:29
Gone in 60 seconds.
45:30
See, I was like, wait, yes, it is from the original gone in 60 seconds.
45:34
All right.
45:35
Wait, wait, wait, ah, ah, gone in 60 seconds is a 1974 American independent action film
45:42
written and directed produced by starring HB, Halikki, sorry, Jobe, but HB, Halikki.
45:48
So the film centers on a group of car thieves and 50 cars, they must still in a matter of
45:52
days.
45:53
Oh, interesting.
45:54
I had 70.
45:55
Did not.
45:56
I did not know.
45:57
Good to know.
45:58
It's the modern remake of God of 60 seconds.
45:59
But go ahead.
46:00
So bullet to Tony.
46:01
I think you're right.
46:02
I think that's his name.
46:03
He is just this hard nose thug.
46:04
He's like the, the, the muscle of the group.
46:07
And he is just this hard guy who just beats up, kills whoever, um, does it.
46:11
He literally doesn't say a word the entire movie.
46:13
And then at the end, Nicholas Cage says something and then he just waxes poetic for like five
46:18
minutes.
46:19
It's probably not that long, but he says this very eloquent, like advice and everybody's
46:24
like, what?
46:25
Where did that come from?
46:27
Like that's, that's what I thought of when you were talking about that.
46:30
That was a long way to get there.
46:32
So we got there.
46:33
We got there though.
46:34
We absolutely got there.
46:35
All right.
46:36
Well, that is the first round of draft.
46:37
And since we're not going snake, it's back up to yours truly.
46:39
So with the fifth pick in the 2024 proverbs, 12 draft, I select verse 11, whoever works
46:47
his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.
46:53
So funny.
46:54
We started this talking about like fantasy football and all those types of punishments
46:56
and y'all keep having your own little side conversations over there.
46:59
We're going to split you two up.
47:00
I just remember this was a heavy topic on our Wednesday morning.
47:03
Okay.
47:04
Well, okay.
47:05
Well, let me set it up.
47:06
Let me set it up and y'all get into it.
47:07
So the very first thing I wrote down in my notes was hobbies versus work and just the
47:11
overall concept of hard work, which we've hit, we've hit diligence and anti sloth illness
47:15
and all that.
47:17
But I know some guys that will come to me, Oh man, I'm, I'm really struggling at work
47:21
and I'm struggling, making quota, I'm struggling, you know, getting that next thing.
47:25
I'm struggling with my master's degree, which will give me, you know, set up for this promotion,
47:29
all that kind of stuff.
47:30
But you know what they don't struggle with golf, you know what they don't struggle with?
47:33
Hunting.
47:34
You know what they don't struggle with jujitsu.
47:37
They're hobbies, fancy football.
47:40
They got the best lineup.
47:41
They're always in the top too.
47:43
They're always in the finals, right?
47:45
They're always leveling up in, you know, Fortnite or mad or whatever.
47:49
They're always doing well.
47:51
They've got their hobbies on lock, but their marriage is a mess, their relationship with
47:56
their kids is a mess.
47:57
They have no idea what their kids are even learning because they're not paying attention,
48:01
but they've got all their stuff focused on their hobbies.
48:03
And so again, I'm not anti hobby.
48:05
When people think, "Well, why are you anti all these things?"
48:07
I'm not.
48:08
You have to have ways to blow off steam.
48:10
And I think that there are ways that are better, right?
48:12
I think it's much better to train jujitsu than it is to golf because golf is not a transferrable
48:16
skill to anything else.
48:17
Whereas jujitsu could end up saving your life or saving someone you love's life.
48:20
I'm legit like no tongue in cheek as I say that.
48:23
But whatever you're into is what you're into, but you've got to keep your hobbies, your
48:26
hobbies guys.
48:27
And it's like, well, you can't level up at work.
48:29
You can't figure out why you and your wife are fighting all the time you can't do.
48:33
But you can figure out how to get to this secret place in God of War, or you can figure
48:38
out the left, left, down, up, whatever on Mortal Kombat so you can get the extra special
48:42
fatality.
48:43
It's like I just don't get these guys that spend all this time and effort on stuff that
48:47
ultimately doesn't matter inherently.
48:49
No, it doesn't matter.
48:50
But they just don't care.
48:51
And I think that a couple weeks ago, you're talking about Satan being the ultimate counterfeiter,
48:58
the best at counterfeiting.
49:00
And we live in a culture, again, that's so counter-viable that the frivolous pursuits
49:08
that we go after like video games, there are so many digital accolades that you could get
49:16
by like, I don't even know one of the games you said, but the Mortal Kombat, getting that
49:21
whatever fatality, that's something that you can achieve.
49:24
And you get that little Russia dopamine of like, oh, yeah, I did it.
49:28
And the world tells you to keep going after that, keep going after that.
49:31
And so again, I think Satan is really good at counterfeiting this thing.
49:35
We should be pursuing excellence in the things that we do.
49:41
But man, you'd be hard pressed to tell me that playing video games is to the glory of
49:46
God.
49:47
And it is not just a like kind of worthless pursuit as Proverbs would call it.
49:53
Well, I'll throw one out there that is a worthless, I think I'd actually, this may have been what
49:58
launched the discussion, but how much time and effort and money do we spend following
50:11
our favorite sports team?
50:15
How often do you discuss, you know, lineups, oh, I think that they're going to be great
50:21
this year recruiting recruiting or, you know, how much, how much of your treasure is going
50:27
towards site like that sites that basically just are for your team or even podcasts that
50:32
are just for your team?
50:35
How much time and effort are you spending in that?
50:38
I think you've talked about like, how much are you letting it ruin your day when they
50:41
lose?
50:42
Um, listen, I mean, to Kyle chagrin, I am a huge cub.
50:48
Huge.
50:50
And 2016, it happened, it happened, it happened, there's 108 years, 108 years of frustration.
51:05
But what I'm, what I'm going to say here is that it was, it was really cool to see.
51:10
Okay.
51:11
I saw something that most people have not seen in their lifetime.
51:15
And I was happy about it for like a couple hours and the next day it's back to back to
51:22
normal.
51:23
It, it, now I had invested a lot in that team though.
51:27
I mean, it was like, I felt like like, how many games did I watch?
51:31
Right.
51:32
And so partially your champion.
51:33
Yeah.
51:34
Yeah.
51:35
And I'm still waiting on my ring.
51:36
I don't know.
51:37
It ain't coming.
51:38
It's not going to.
51:39
And they ain't getting another one for around.
51:42
David said it to you yet.
51:44
I've, I've requested.
51:45
So I don't, I don't know if this is really pertinent to that.
51:49
And I fall into this exact same category because as I've talked about every time I talk about
51:53
it, unless sports are in your night, how, how many nights I let the St. Louis Cardinals
51:56
are in my night.
51:57
Bro, like since you and I knew each other, you mentioned crew last week where, you know,
52:00
we're going to all the games.
52:01
We're freaking out, going crazy.
52:02
I don't remember this, but my wife says she remembers it.
52:05
It was like we had just started dating and the UCO Broncos lost a game to, you know,
52:10
East Central or, you know, Tarleton State or something like that.
52:15
And we're at Flat Tyreburger across the street and I am inconsolable.
52:19
And I think part of the reason why my Broncos lost is because we didn't get the crowd hyped
52:24
enough on that fourth down that if they would have been a little louder, they wouldn't have
52:27
been able to hear the cadence.
52:29
They wouldn't have been able to hear any of they wouldn't have been able to hear the quarterback.
52:33
And so I've let sports ruin enough of my night.
52:35
But here's the thing that I've always just recently, I was watching, you know, this highlight
52:39
video is a compilation of people responding to win Max Holloway, knocked out Justin Gaechee
52:44
at the very, in the very last second of their fight at UFC 300, the greatest knock out in
52:48
the history of the UFC.
52:50
And these people are absolutely losing it.
52:52
They're breaking chairs, they're throwing drinks on their friends.
52:55
They had invested weeks of anticipation for this fight and, you know, 25 minutes of fighting
53:01
and they get to the end, they get this big release, right, for the fighter that they wanted
53:04
to win.
53:05
And then I go to any church I've ever been to, ever, and somebody says, I have decided
53:12
to follow Jesus.
53:13
I know, sorry, sorry, Calvinist, but they did, they'll say whether it's true or not that
53:17
they decided to follow Jesus.
53:19
We did.
53:20
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
53:21
Let's not get off my point.
53:22
Let's get on my point.
53:23
I've decided to follow Jesus.
53:24
And this is a reaction.
53:25
No.
53:26
Isn't that sweet.
53:27
Oh, that's so nice.
53:29
So nice, someone gets baptized into the family of the, of the line in the land.
53:34
Gosh, and in that suite, I bet their grandparents are so proud.
53:38
And man, I don't know what to do about that because I've seen, you know, fervent Christians,
53:43
pastors, all that, I've seen them freak out at a football game or a basketball game or
53:46
a volleyball match or a soccer match or something like that.
53:49
And they would never do that when somebody literally realizes they're saved or become
53:55
saved or whatever your chosen languages.
53:57
Quick golf clap in salvation.
53:59
Yeah.
54:00
We talked about that before here is just in which I think that's one of the things that
54:05
I really appreciate about our Sunday school and then just about some of the friendships
54:10
that I have in Sunday school is that we're all aware when our kids are getting baptized.
54:15
And man, you have guys show up and just go nuts for your kid getting baptized.
54:21
That's pretty cool.
54:22
Yeah.
54:23
That's pretty cool because they want to be in tension with that because I don't know
54:25
who said it, but there's a theologian that said, um, if we treated church, the way we
54:31
treat sports, what a world can't imagine.
54:33
Yeah.
54:34
They banned, they banned me from baptizing my other, I don't know if y'all were there
54:39
for that, but I got so pumped up, man, I, I threw him down.
54:43
That's right.
54:44
I mean, they, they put a new policy in place on where they put it because of how
54:48
those flashing policies are slamming down, man, we were, we were making a memory.
54:52
We were, we were putting that into our lives forever.
54:55
Yeah.
54:56
And there was no way we were walking away from that without it being something big.
54:59
That's awesome.
55:00
Dude, Scotty Scheffler.
55:01
I see the, the, he's the golfer.
55:02
The big, the big.
55:03
Just one of the masters.
55:04
Right.
55:05
Um, yeah.
55:06
Yeah.
55:07
So, uh, he gets a lot of consternation from reporters and fans in general because his
55:11
basic attitude towards it is, it's just golf, it's a job, you're like one of the best at
55:17
your sports.
55:18
And what a great example for our kids to follow.
55:20
If there is someone that they, that you, you could be okay with them following someone
55:24
like Scotty Scheffler who's like, yeah, yeah, she's just golf.
55:28
When I think like worse, like, you teach your kids what your priorities are as a family
55:33
on Sunday morning, like I grew up playing, uh, travel, uh, all star baseball, right?
55:38
And on Sunday mornings, we were getting ready for the game.
55:42
Now I didn't go to a family that attended church, but what my wife said, and this is
55:46
one of the, one of the few good things I would say that we picked up from the, the religious
55:50
upbringing she had is on Sunday mornings when she was at softball tournaments.
55:54
They found a church in the area and she would be in her softball gear with her hair braided
55:59
and they would worship the Lord before the game.
56:01
And so, but if you're always at the lake on Sunday mornings, when it's, when it's beautiful
56:05
or when you're always hunting on Sunday mornings because it's, it's that season for whatever
56:10
animal that you're wanting to put on the wall and you're, you are literally catacizing your
56:14
children and teaching them this is more important than coming together with the body of Christ.
56:20
Like it, and it, it's subtle, but it's there.
56:22
I think it goes, it goes right back to what do we describe as being our land and what
56:27
is the, the worthless pursuits, because it's easy for us, like especially as guys, there's,
56:32
we would more fall into the opposite of this, right, is that it's easy for us to say, oh,
56:37
the gamer or whoever is neglecting their duties that are very visible, but I probably know
56:44
more men that have not defined what their land is and what the bread that they should
56:49
be providing for their family is, and they have passed that off on success.
56:55
They think that because they can provide financial dough that they no longer are required to
57:02
lead their family.
57:03
It's like the book, Family Shepherds, you know, like there is a responsibility there
57:09
that we have to provide the nourishment that we put on the table for our family along with
57:15
the other things.
57:16
So I know a lot of guys that their worthless pursuits may be the thing that pays their
57:20
paycheck every day, but they have turned them into worthless pursuits because it is, they
57:25
have neglected the idea that their land and the bread that they were bringing is something
57:31
different than just what their boss or their company is becoming.
57:35
Yeah.
57:36
And like you said, like you're going to catechize your kids one way or the other, that our catechize,
57:41
that our kids are catechized is not a choice we get to make, but glory be to God that we
57:44
get to choose how we categorize them.
57:48
And if we're diligent and intentional with that mindset, and they can go and have lots
57:56
of fruitfulness for the kingdom of God.
57:58
Right.
57:59
There's natural behavior, there's chosen behavior, and then there's learned behavior.
58:02
And so when you freak out at the goings on of a football game involving 18, 19, 20, and
58:07
21 year old children and you're screaming F words like there was a video I shared last
58:11
year.
58:12
In other words, there were these adult males in the stands.
58:16
And there was, I think it was who Washington, Texas.
58:18
So it was Washington, Texas, semi-final college football playoff game.
58:22
So Washington pulls it out, the Longhorns weren't able to win there at the last second.
58:26
Everybody in Oklahoma said, Amen, but the, the, a bunch of the players for Washington
58:30
that I don't even think played, they started John with these guys in the front row.
58:36
And I remember saying, cause everyone's like, look at these horrible Texas fans and what
58:41
they're saying to these young men.
58:42
And then there were people like, look at these terrible, young, disrespectful men, like saying
58:47
these old things.
58:48
And I'm like, they both acted like thuggish idiots, the people on the crowd and the people down
58:53
there.
58:54
And here's the other thing, the adults in the crowd were screaming and yelling and cursing
58:59
at these young boys and their children were right there next to them.
59:02
And so the wife's trying to be like, honey, honey, please sit down, sit down.
59:05
You know, who's in between them?
59:06
They're seven year old son.
59:08
Watch and dad scream at a stranger because his favorite college team for a college that
59:14
he may not even have attended, lost a football game and his, right, and this kid, this kid
59:22
went viral along with his father.
59:25
And they will always be able to go back to that video that one time and I hope that man
59:28
is repented.
59:29
I hope he's found those, those young men that he was screaming at and in modeled apology
59:33
to them.
59:34
I hope that he apologized to his wife.
59:35
I hope that he apologized to his children.
59:37
I hope all of that.
59:38
I'm not going to hold out that any hope that that actually happened.
59:42
But again, it is Matt.
59:43
It is caught, not taught.
59:44
And that's the thing is you don't want to be the dad that says, do what I say, not what
59:47
I do.
59:48
Because what you're doing is you're constantly giving yourself an out say like, you know,
59:51
what son, you should exercise, it's important, but then you don't exercise.
59:54
You know what son, you should read the Bible, but you don't, you know, you don't read the
59:56
Bible.
59:57
You know what son, you should control yourself.
59:58
It's boarding events, but you don't control yourself with sporting events.
1:00:00
It's like you definitely don't want to become that dad.
1:00:03
Any last thoughts before we get out of here?
1:00:04
Unfortunately, I got two picks.
1:00:06
