0:55
Let's get into it.
0:56
Welcome back to the Forging Table.
0:58
The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:01
forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience.
1:04
At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:08
by digging into God's Word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:11
us.
1:12
That's Derek.
1:13
That's Winkler.
1:14
That's Horn.
1:15
And today we're digging into Matthew 6.
1:16
Derek, go ahead and lead us off reading verses one through four.
1:20
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them,
1:24
for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
1:28
Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in
1:32
the synagogues and in the streets.
1:34
That they may be praised by others.
1:35
Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward, but when you give to the needy, do
1:40
not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that you're giving maybe
1:44
in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
1:48
So who sees in secret?
1:50
We will see that again here in the Scripture, but my question that I had here, and this
1:53
was my initial thought, not that I'm trying to contradict Scripture by any stretch, is
1:59
it is better to give humbly, but what about inspiring others?
2:02
Now, there are people that they have a PR team.
2:06
So I think about athletes where you see these athletes, let me back up you one more step.
2:13
There's a team that I won't name, so I don't throw anybody under the bus, but it's someone
2:17
I knew that worked for this team, and their players get paid to go and do visits to hospitals
2:25
and to children's shelters, and they get paid to do that, right?
2:31
And the players were complaining that they had to go to this children's hospital to hang
2:35
out with kids that had cancer, because they had stuff they wanted to do, right?
2:39
And so that already made me mad, and then it was like, wait, they get paid to do this.
2:43
That kind of makes me mad, too, but then you'll hear about these athletes that maybe it's
2:50
after they've died, or after they retired, or you'll see this random story to where it's
2:54
like they went to the hospital after the game in the middle of the night to see a kid to
2:59
give him a signed bat, to take them the game ball to do all these different things.
3:03
They didn't take a picture for Instagram, they didn't take a picture for their PR firm
3:07
to use.
3:08
It's just found out later, and then sometimes when these people die posthumously, they found
3:12
out, wow, they gave away all this money, and they did all these things, and they did all
3:17
these make-a-wish events, and they requested that the camera's not be there.
3:21
And we hear stories like that, and we're like, that is amazing, how humble.
3:25
But then there's another part of me that's like, what if they just, okay, I'll do it.
3:30
Let's take pictures, because there's a lot of people that have money like I do that aren't
3:35
going to be inspired to do this, because they're asked by the organization, but if they see
3:39
me doing it, they're going to be all about it, so I'm a little conflicted on this.
3:43
It's a spirit led thing to me.
3:46
My wife worked at Children's Hospital in the Oncology Ward as an RN, and she grew up an
3:53
OSU fan, and Bob Stoops would come up there all the time, once a week, even during the
4:00
season, he was there all the time, and there's a whole story that goes behind it if you read
4:04
Bob Stoops' book about why he did it, and why he continued to do it, but she said he
4:09
came up there, he brought players, he knew every kid by their name.
4:14
I look at that and I go, okay, if it's spirit led, the word will get out, and it will inspire
4:19
people.
4:20
I think, I mean, you're going to have to, I think in your humility when you do contribute
4:24
or you do those things, let God take care of the inspiration and keep doing what the
4:32
word says.
4:33
I think if, because I do think there is a counterbalance here, you know, there is the
4:39
inspiration thing, but there's also the idea that, well, if they're supporting the organization,
4:44
I don't need to, you know, how often do we read about, oh, you know, so-and-so executive
4:51
from this company gave a $500 million endowment to Harvard again, you know, and they're sitting
5:00
on $50 billion, and it's not really anything that they're giving.
5:04
It's actually more of a contest.
5:08
It's a competition, and so I look at it and I go, I think you can do it and not worry about
5:14
inspiring others, because I do think if you are giving, it will inspire others.
5:18
There's ways you can frame it where, hey, we've been supported by a lot of people in
5:22
this group, and then other people get called to it, so you can do it without specifically
5:27
calling people out, I think.
5:30
Derek, what do you got, man?
5:31
I mean, dad, really.
5:32
Nothing to add to that.
5:34
Man, I think of virtue signaling.
5:37
Hey, you're having a boss that's inside, that'll go.
5:41
Virtue signaling, man, we went to a church that was really capable of virtue signaling
5:48
a lot in regards to politics and social issues, but one of the things that kind of just like
5:53
got under my skin, like I am a firm believer of giving and doing for others, and, you know,
5:59
I like to do it without anybody knowing, like if I buy a meal for somebody at a restaurant,
6:04
I tell the waitress, do not let them know who it came from, you know, because if you
6:08
know who they're going to think, instead of me, they're going to thank God, and that's
6:12
who I want them to think, you know, because God's using me as a means for them.
6:17
But we would do, we would pack like meals for like homeless people, and we would go
6:25
through and we would spend four or five hours packing meals for homeless people on this
6:29
Sunday.
6:30
And I just remember like, hey, we got done, everything was great, said a prayer, moved
6:34
on.
6:35
I think a week later in the local newspaper, there's a picture of the pastor with his arms
6:39
just out, and there's us down there doing the meals, and he's like this, and it's like
6:44
this church packed 30,000 meals for homeless people, and it was like, oh, an article in
6:48
the paper.
6:49
I'm like, this is a tiny church, like this isn't like, this isn't like a large church
6:54
in our area.
6:55
It's like a tiny church of like a hundred people, it's like, how does the word get out
6:59
about this tiny church doing 3,000 meals, you know, or 30,000 meals, like really, how
7:05
does it get out?
7:06
And it's just like, no, I mean, like there, he was very notorious for shouting from the
7:11
rooftops what we did for, for the poor, and for the less fortunate, and like, it's like,
7:17
can we just take a step back?
7:18
Like, I want to look at a Facebook page from a church that shows the gospel and shows people
7:22
doing stuff, worshiping God, not, hey, what's the virtue that they surpass this week that
7:28
makes them look good, and so they can shout it from the rooftops?
7:32
A.B.
7:33
Bruce has a really good quote, show when you are tempted to hide, hide when you are tempted
7:38
to show.
7:39
I mean, to me, it is, again, it's spirit-led, like, if you, if you feel tempted to kind
7:47
of shy away from it, then you should probably be saying something, you're showing it to
7:52
people, if you feel tempted to show or say what you've done, you should probably be hiding
7:58
from it.
7:59
I'm going to say one of my least favorite words in the English language right now, but
8:03
I feel like it's very nuanced, and this is why I say that.
8:07
So I know we make fun of Joby and all that kind of stuff, but Compassionate International,
8:11
that's an organization that basically helps kids that are very destitute, getting them
8:16
food and tuition and all kinds of other different stuff, and of all the churches that do organized
8:23
drives for Compassion International, Church of 1122 down in Florida does more than anybody
8:30
by a mile, by a mile.
8:33
And he's very proud of that, and he'll mention that, and I think once a year they do a Compassion
8:37
Eye, which this is actually a really great way of doing it because they have those packets
8:40
with the kid's picture on it and all that.
8:42
And so what Joby will do is he will bring trash cans into the sanctuary.
8:46
And so once you get your packet, you've got to throw it in the trash on the way out.
8:50
If you're not going to, like, you know, hop in and do the thing with that kid, some people
8:54
are like, oh, some people are like, that's manipulative.
8:56
It's like, no, he's like, it's like, what is it, Dave Ramsey's like, you know, when you
9:01
when you lose cash, you feel it, but when you like make a bad purchase on a credit card,
9:05
it doesn't really feel the same.
9:07
And so for him, it's like, I want you to feel it.
9:10
So I like hearing that there are churches out there that sponsor X amount of kids and
9:15
that that is inspiring other churches in that area, like, okay, if that church can do it,
9:22
like we can do something like that, maybe not in the same numbers, but they're being faithful
9:26
to God in this way, using their excess to do these things.
9:30
So again, I'm still conflicted where I think I think it comes down to the whole, what's
9:33
your heart?
9:34
What's the posture of your heart while you're doing it?
9:36
It's the same thing.
9:37
Whenever people have asked me before, like, is it satanic to do yoga?
9:40
It's like doing upward dog, the pose is not satanic, but if you're doing upward dog facing
9:47
the east with your ponytail hook to a tree, then you're doing an ome and you're trying
9:50
to talk to like the the sun God about how to yeah, yeah, you're you're you're dabbling
9:56
in some pretty satanic things there.
9:58
So I think it's the posture of your heart while you're doing it.
10:00
Are you doing this?
10:01
So to be braggadocious.
10:03
So people will look at you and say, Hey, man, that that those people are really crushing
10:06
it.
10:07
Or are you doing it to be like, look, you can do this too.
10:10
And I'm just proud of our congregation.
10:12
I'm just like, if the four of us or all the people that do the forging table got together
10:15
to do something, I'm probably going to brag about it on the show.
10:18
Not so people will be like, Hey, man, we're the best and we want to tell you why.
10:21
But it's like the same reason why I'm doing the forging table to begin with, I want guys
10:25
to be inspired to do their own forging table.
10:27
They thought they, you know, they weren't smart enough.
10:29
They didn't go to the Bible college, so they can't say the Bible or lead a Bible study.
10:31
It's like, sure, you can't.
10:33
And so it's like, should I have kept this under wraps?
10:36
Should I not be recording this right now?
10:38
Again, I don't want to be too ridiculous and expand this, this ripple effect out.
10:42
But I'm still conflicted with the, the strictness of reading this literally, if that makes sense.
10:49
I think the great thing about that, if I look back to the situation we were at, like, I
10:53
think posting it in the newspaper or on Facebook, like, I think it's a little braggadocious.
10:58
But if that pastor wanted to be like, Hey, send it out to his buddy pastors who aren't
11:01
doing the same thing, like in an email being like, Hey, this is what we did.
11:04
I think it's really awesome.
11:05
You should reach out to this organization and try to set the same thing up.
11:09
That makes more sense.
11:10
You're, you're, you're building the kingdom.
11:11
You're not, you're not being real braggadocious about it.
11:13
You're trying to push an actual message.
11:15
But I mean, how many people read that in the newspaper and we're like, Oh, I want to go
11:18
to that church, you know, or I'm going to go and do what that church did probably not
11:22
a lot, you know, they were hoping, but we didn't see a big congregational upshift.
11:26
I'll just point out what I just kind of noticed again.
11:29
It doesn't say if you give to the needy, it says when you give to the needy.
11:33
So it's not like an option, I guess, you know, you don't have an option.
11:37
You don't have an option.
11:39
You better do it.
11:40
Yeah.
11:41
Do it.
11:42
Yeah.
11:43
When you give it.
11:44
But compassion, I love compassion.
11:45
That's great.
11:46
I, I adopted a kid from, I'm not trying to be braggadocious, but like, I just think it's
11:49
funny because before I was married, before we had kids, I like adopted one of those kids
11:54
from a Jeremy cam concert, like back in like 2007.
11:58
Yeah.
11:59
We do the same thing.
12:00
Yeah.
12:01
I still, I, yeah, my, it's Charles Darwin, Conja.
12:03
I was like, that dude needs the Lord, you know, and he's like, Tim, on purpose.
12:08
Yeah, I did.
12:09
I was like, I was like, boom.
12:11
But no, he, but like, I still have him, like he's going through college, like the dude's
12:16
like 20 years old.
12:17
I was like, I was like, man, how long are these kids on here for?
12:19
I was like, I'm not taking care of my kid after 18, you know, so we should start paying
12:23
me back.
12:24
But no, but like, I will say like, we would give money, like extra money for like birthday
12:28
or Christmas like that, and I was like, he'll send pictures of like all the stuff that he
12:32
got with it.
12:33
Like food, like always gets food.
12:34
I was like, you know what?
12:35
That's what I love about compassion is that they didn't just take the 50 or $75 I sent
12:40
and just like scattered it amongst everything.
12:42
They gave that kid the $75 and he went and had a good time.
12:46
Well, to this end, I mean, again, going back to, you know, should we, should we be advertising
12:52
it?
12:53
I look at that case, you've been supporting a kid till, you know, somewhat, since, you
13:00
know, for a very long time and now he's 20 years old, I think the hope here is, okay,
13:06
who who's going to be inspired to give now?
13:09
Yeah, he will.
13:10
Yeah, he received.
13:11
He was needy and someone someone helped him and you would hope that he has a little bit
13:16
better life than than what would have been mapped out for him and would have the opportunity
13:22
to actually give further.
13:24
So again, it's, it's why I see, again, I, I look at the ones where I read this book,
13:31
I think it was Malcolm Gladwell and he was talking about giving towards the, or I think
13:36
it was maybe a podcast, but he was giving, he was talking about the endowments that are
13:38
given to these huge colleges and the, you know, harvards and yales and Princeton's are getting
13:44
these, they got these multi-billion dollar endowments, okay, and most of the kids going
13:49
there don't need help going there.
13:52
So what are they using it for?
13:53
Yeah.
13:54
There was another guy who owned a engineering company and he donated like, I think it was
14:01
like a hundred million dollars to this small college in West Virginia that did engineering
14:07
and supported all of these kids coming through on scholarships and grants and, and it ended
14:14
up making this enormous impact on these people who would not even have had the opportunity
14:19
to go to a college like an Ivy League school.
14:22
I think when you look at scenarios like, again, when you're giving, what are you giving to?
14:28
And I think if you're giving it in the right direction, it will inspire people further to
14:33
give.
14:34
It may not even be right now.
14:36
It might be that next generation.
14:37
He might have inspired by him giving that.
14:40
Hopefully he inspired three, four, five, maybe they go on to be the same as him, three
14:45
or four, five of them come back and say, yeah, I'm going to give a bunch of money.
14:49
Not to my school, but I'm going to find another small college in need and actually do the
14:52
same thing.
14:53
Yeah.
14:54
Give it to you.
14:55
See you.
14:56
I can say like Ron Jones, I think the most beautiful thing about it is like when I get
15:02
my letters from him and how he's like praying for health and he's praying for you and he's
15:07
throwing out Bible verses and there's just a deep connection with God that these kids
15:11
are learning and I was like, you know what?
15:13
Like sometimes I get frustrated and like, man, dude, it's 20 years old.
15:16
I'm still sending $40 a month, you know, but it's just like, man, look, look what that
15:21
organization is doing for this guy.
15:23
Like this is going out and reaching the world.
15:26
This is going out and reaching the unchurched.
15:29
And I just think it's a beautiful thing.
15:30
So compassionate or national, you have not given a don to life any money, but you just
15:34
got a 10 minute long commercial for your use.
15:38
So you're welcome.
15:39
Compassion.
15:40
Joby send me some information.
15:41
Yes.
15:42
That's right.
15:43
Hey, let's get the links out there.
15:44
We're going to the Lord's prayer now.
15:45
So verse five and six, Winkler, if you can read five and six, I have one comment and then
15:49
I want to get to the rest of the pressure.
15:51
Sure.
15:52
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray
15:56
in the synagogues and at the street corners that they may be seen by others.
16:01
Truly I say to you, they have received their reward, but when you pray, go into your room
16:06
and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in
16:10
secret will reward you.
16:12
So there's a who sees in secret again, Derek to your point earlier, the second word is
16:16
and when you pray, not if you pray, if it's convenient.
16:20
But some people think that this is condemnation of public prayer.
16:23
I remember when Tim Tebow, when he was at Florida, was praying on the sideline and people would
16:29
throw this scripture out at him and press conferences and say, Hey, you know, and these
16:34
are non-Christian saying this, Hey, Christian, you shouldn't do this based on what this book
16:38
I don't believe in.
16:39
So it's like, okay, but the thing is, is Jesus isn't, he's clearly not condemning public
16:44
prayer, like as evidenced by the fact that he publicly prayed multiple times.
16:49
The thing about it is where you're, you're broadcasting your prayer to sound awesome.
16:54
And I love Tim Tebow's like he was so good with the media with basically no training,
16:59
but he basically said like, I would go to a place on the sideline, a sideline with hundreds
17:05
of people on it.
17:06
A place where no one else was, I would kneel and pray, I can't control where they point
17:11
the cameras.
17:12
Okay.
17:13
Yeah.
17:14
So the cameras find me, show me on CBS, you know, we're about to go over there and we're
17:18
about to play Auburn and here the cameras are focusing on me and it's making people hate
17:23
him and, Oh, he's the worst and he's bringing attention to himself.
17:27
He didn't like look up at the camera guy and say, Hey, I'm about to pray in 10 nine and
17:32
then get down like he wasn't doing that.
17:34
He's like, I'm not serving y'all.
17:36
I'm not serving the television station.
17:37
I'm not serving the Florida Gators right now.
17:39
I'm serving God and I'm going to spend a little bit of time with him before I go out here
17:43
and get my 14th concussion this season.
17:45
And so like that, that's the very important thing about this, this entire thing is the
17:48
point is, is when people start doing these grandiose prayers, specifically so people
17:53
would look at him, look at them.
17:55
That is, that's the point that we're talking about.
17:58
Ryan, can you read?
17:59
Yeah.
18:00
I was going to go off of something.
18:01
Yeah, go ahead.
18:02
And then when you're done, read seven through 15.
18:04
Oh, yeah.
18:05
Yeah, you got to read a lot.
18:06
Yeah.
18:07
I grew up in a very charismatic home.
18:10
And so like people would like to pray out loud, like all the time.
18:13
And like, I think that's the thing that you bring up about Tim Tebow, like Tim Tebow went
18:17
to a corner.
18:18
He can't control where the cameras go, but imagine if Tim Tebow or like they're interviewing
18:23
him and someone's like, you know what, just had a rough day and he's like, all right,
18:26
let me pray for you right now.
18:28
And just like on air, just starts like, Lord, we come to you right now and I just like,
18:32
has this elaborate prayer.
18:33
I mean, I think that's what Christ is talking about here.
18:36
Like I, I run into it all the time where someone's like, yeah, I'm having a tough time.
18:39
But then there's that one person that likes to pray extremely loud in front of everybody
18:43
so they know that it's being done.
18:45
And I think that's what he's talking about in regards to giving to the needy.
18:48
It's like you're trying to bring the attention on to yourself and you're not bringing the
18:52
attention back to God.
18:53
So this is something that I do before you read, starting in verse seven.
18:56
And I've said this before.
18:58
So whenever I go to a restaurant, I have a habit of this because you've ordered your
19:01
food, they make your food, they bring it to the table and what does the server ask you
19:05
before they leave?
19:06
Yeah.
19:07
Do you need anything else or anything else I can grab for you in Oklahoma?
19:09
The only answer is ranch, please.
19:10
Yeah.
19:11
Because we put ranch on freaking everything.
19:14
But in that moment, I've gotten in the habit of doing this for years and years and years,
19:17
I say, Hey, my family and I are about to bless our meals or something we can pray for you
19:21
about.
19:22
Love it.
19:23
Most people would never do such thing, but the worst case scenario is they punch you
19:27
in the face, which has never happened.
19:29
Like the worst thing that's ever happened is someone goes, no, thanks.
19:32
And then they just walk away.
19:33
But again, they're in a professional capacity.
19:35
They want a good tip.
19:36
And so I've had everything from, um, no, but thank you.
19:40
And then they walk away.
19:41
And I've had people be like, and they take that deep breath.
19:45
Their shoulders come down.
19:46
That tension has lifted and they're like, I had a guy, I remember this guy at this
19:50
wing place, my favorite wing place in Oklahoma City, uh, uh, oh my gosh, chicken and beer
19:55
or something like that.
19:56
Chicken beer, chicken beer and best wings in Oklahoma City.
20:00
And this guy goes, today is two months over for me, man.
20:04
And I have to stay sober to stay in this house that I'm in.
20:07
I'm kind of like in this halfway house thing and like, you know, this is, I have two jobs
20:12
and I'm just trying to keep myself busy and man, dude, that's so awesome.
20:15
And it's like, I could have just said more ranch, please, but in that moment, I was able
20:20
to minister to him.
20:21
And most of the time they don't stick around for the prayer, right?
20:24
And they don't have to.
20:25
Most of the time they just take off recently.
20:26
I was having dinner with Jobe and Jacksonville did the same thing.
20:29
We're in a private room and, uh, the guy comes out and this is nice restaurant.
20:32
So they're, they're being over the top with, and this is a this and this is this trying
20:36
to be fancy.
20:37
And I asked the kid, Hey, can we pray for any goes?
20:40
My neighbor died yesterday and I was kind of close to him and you could tell he's trying
20:45
to hold together because he's at work, but it's like it gave us an opportunity to minister
20:49
because I just said, yes, Lord, I will ask this very awkward question, seemingly awkward
20:53
question.
20:54
But like it's already a private setting, even though you're in an open public restaurant,
20:59
like I'm talking to this person in this one moment trying to minister.
21:02
Did you go out in front of everybody in the restaurant and pray really loud?
21:05
No, see, like if I had gone up to everybody and went like, okay.
21:07
And I'm looking on the glass guys, I'm about to be, uh, you know, morally superior to everyone.
21:12
I am praying three, two, one, shut up.
21:14
Like that's, that's the difference there for sure.
21:16
That's totally right.
21:17
So, uh, read starting at verse seven and go through a 15, please write 15.
21:21
All right.
21:22
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do or they think that they
21:26
will be heard for their many words.
21:28
Do not be like them for your father knows what you need before you ask him.
21:33
Pray then like this, our father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
21:38
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
21:41
Give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us of our debts as we also forgiven our debtors
21:47
and lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil.
21:51
For if you forgive others, their trespasses, your heavenly father will forgive you.
21:56
But if you do not forgive others, their trespasses neither will your father forgive your trespasses.
22:01
So that's the Lord's prayer.
22:03
We can see in verse seven, uh, for they think they will be heard for their many words.
22:07
That's kind of an admonition of these lengthy poetic prayers.
22:11
Um, and then he gives us an example prayer of that is short, it's very short.
22:16
It's with an invocation, our father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
22:19
And then there are six petitions.
22:21
Uh, the first three petitions are for God's preeminence and the second three are personal
22:27
needs, you know, in kind of a community context.
22:30
So petition one, your kingdom come petition to your will be done petition three on earth
22:33
as it is in heaven.
22:35
petition four, give us this day, our daily bread petition five and forgive us our debts
22:40
as we have also have forgiven our debtors petition six and lead us not to temptation,
22:44
deliver us from evil.
22:46
Here's something that I want to talk about though.
22:47
I'm going to go back to the third petition on earth as it is in heaven.
22:51
So it's your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it as it is in heaven.
22:55
What this necessarily begs actually, let me back up a little bit because I think y'all
23:00
know where I'm going.
23:01
I'm going to go back to the word hallowed real quick.
23:03
So if you go to a church where they start the sermon off or the prayer off with daddy
23:07
God or father, home boy, Jesus or Jesus is my home boy.
23:13
That's not what hallowed means or hallowed like that is of it's almost like the Jews
23:19
in terms of like Yahweh, like they wouldn't even say it like hallowed.
23:23
It's so high of a name like again, when you're talking about God, he's not your buddy.
23:29
Okay.
23:30
He is the creator of the universe and if you say, yeah, if I were in front of God, I would
23:34
say this, you would say nothing, right?
23:36
Because you would burn up in his presence, right?
23:39
If he showed you even a fraction of his light, but now let me go back down to your kingdom
23:43
come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
23:48
There is a dividing line there, earth and heaven.
23:51
So we're having to pray that God's will will be done on earth as it is in heaven, which
23:55
implies to me that in heaven, his will is done, but on earth, it is not.
24:01
Even saying it out loud, I feel like people are going to be like, Kyle's a heretic.
24:04
I'm just asking the question.
24:06
I'm the, you know, I'm just Columbus, I'm just asking questions, but where do you guys
24:10
sit with that?
24:11
Because I remember the first time someone said, Hey, do you know why Jesus told his followers
24:14
to say your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven?
24:18
Because his will isn't done in heaven or on earth, because if his will was done on earth,
24:24
we would still be in the garden, right?
24:26
And so we get into a lot of problems about sovereignty and a lot of ickiness about God's
24:32
foreknowledge and what he's able, capable of doing you guys, you can even get into a deist
24:37
argument that, Hey, God just said everything in emotion.
24:40
And now he just doesn't care.
24:41
He doesn't really, you know, intercede, he said it in emotion and we messed it up.
24:45
So take that wherever you want to go because there's a lot we can talk about with that.
24:48
I think it really comes down to submission to God's plan and purpose.
24:52
I think he has a plan and purpose for earth and we have to submit to that.
24:58
We have to know that it's not going to be our doing like we brought up last week, what
25:03
Shane Claiborne and how he talked about Isaiah, his whole tag mark of turning a plow shares
25:13
and turning swords into plow shares.
25:15
It's he's trying to bring what God wants to bring on earth.
25:20
And he wants to do it on his timing and on his thoughts and not on what God's plan is.
25:24
He's not submitting to that.
25:26
And so I think that's what we have to look at is that we have to submit to God and like
25:31
starting out the prayer and submission, I think is a huge thing because we're coming.
25:36
We're coming from a humble place to God because, you know, especially in our society now, I
25:42
mean, everything's about me.
25:44
And so to humble yourself before God and and and submit to his design and submit to what
25:50
he wants done, I think is is kind of where they're going with that.
25:54
But in regards to heaven and earth, like, I'm sure heaven is so much more better than
25:59
what it is on earth and God's plan at someday is that we will all come together.
26:04
So I would kind of see where you're going with that.
26:08
But I mean, I haven't thought that deep into it.
26:12
I mean, well, I mean, Ryan, you kind of made a point here.
26:17
I think you did.
26:19
Oh, hi, five year later, no, I think there's a really, I think we have a tendency to get
26:28
really focused on ourselves.
26:30
When we pray, I mean, even prayer requests themselves are a me focus typically.
26:36
I'm having this struggle.
26:37
I have this problem, this person suffering.
26:41
And I want it to stop.
26:44
And so when I taught my daughters to because, you know, I'm trying to teach my kids how
26:49
to pray and, you know, to be perfectly blunt, I struggle.
26:53
I mean, I always say, like, what's the worst sentence I can hear?
26:57
Can you pray for his Jake?
26:59
I hate it because I just go, like, I want to say the right words.
27:04
I don't want to, you know, and it's like it's off the cuff.
27:07
I mean, look, I mean, I showed up here today with like piles of notes.
27:11
I just don't like to look foolish.
27:13
And so I'm afraid that if I go ahead and start praying that I'm going to say the wrong words
27:19
I'm not going to say the right thing and somebody's going to be over there going, whoo, I could
27:21
have done better than that.
27:22
You're probably right.
27:23
I mean, it's off the cuff.
27:25
But I've been teaching my daughters like, okay, how do you pray?
27:29
And I said, well, pray, praise, repent, ask, yield, okay?
27:35
So start off by giving thanks to God, confess your sins to God, then start asking for what
27:44
you might want.
27:45
And then you have to yield it to him.
27:48
It's not save them, it's your will be done.
27:53
And so there has to be, I think when we, when we pray, there has to be a much, much, much
27:58
bigger focus on God.
28:01
I also would like to point out the whole hallowed be thy name.
28:06
Your shoes would not say God.
28:09
And as a matter of fact, like when John is talking about in chapter 3, kingdom of heaven,
28:15
they would swap out heaven for God.
28:19
They would do that because they were just like, I can't, we can't say it.
28:22
So him saying kingdom of heaven was a good call.
28:26
I mean, it was a great call for the Jewish people, but the other gospels will actually
28:30
use kingdom of God a few times.
28:32
You'll see it in Matthew again, and you'll see it in Mark and Luke.
28:36
But again, it's, it's hallowed.
28:39
Who are you talking to?
28:41
So literally the creator of everything, an all powerful, all knowing, not bound by time,
28:48
not bound by space, God.
28:51
And we're just talking to him like, what's up, homie?
28:54
And that's, that's what I love about the Psalms.
28:56
If you go and read the Psalms, like the first part of the Psalm is always worshiping God
29:00
who he is.
29:01
I mean, that's where we find the qualities of God.
29:03
You know, that's where we find who he is.
29:06
And it's always worshiping him for who he is.
29:08
And then David might go into some trouble or peril or, or asking for something.
29:13
But we have to acknowledge who God is.
29:15
We have to acknowledge him for his attributes.
29:19
And I think doing that within prayer, starting out that way kind of brings a hallowedness,
29:23
a holiness to who God is, and then going off to the bullet points that you went off of
29:28
is a great idea of prayer because I, I like you and not the best prayer.
29:32
You know, like, I, I, cause I'm going to hate me for saying this.
29:35
I'll be like, sometimes I pray.
29:36
I let go and let God.
29:37
You know what I'm saying?
29:38
I'm saying, I'm like, I let go and like, oh, there's some truth in that.
29:41
It's just like, I let the Holy Spirit fill me and I, and I hope that God has me put out
29:45
the right words and I pray.
29:47
And, but sometimes, you know, like when I find myself praying, especially when I'm dealing
29:51
with anxiety, we'll go into anxiety and later in this chapter.
29:55
But I find myself just appreciating God for who he is and his attributes and I find comfort
30:01
in that.
30:02
So go ahead, Derek.
30:03
Yeah.
30:04
I was, I was going to add, yeah, I kind of struggle.
30:06
It's, when I'm praying with my kids, almost every night, I repeat myself all the time.
30:12
And you know, he don't heap up empty praises or whatever praises.
30:16
I don't think that's what I'm doing, but sometimes that's what it feels like.
30:20
I'm teaching.
30:21
I'm trying to teach my kids to be thankful for the sun, the moon, your bed, our house,
30:26
all that stuff.
30:28
But every night I'm doing, I'm like, man, am I saying like, right?
30:31
I know not the way it is, but sometimes it feels like that.
30:33
Well, that's part of the, the, of catechism, like catechizing your kids, like whatever,
30:39
because James and I started praying together when he was like four, two years old and stuff
30:42
like that.
30:43
And it's like, you know, used to, he would just repeat me.
30:46
So it's funny.
30:47
Jake, you talked about, did you pray a fourth of July or did I did Russell called me right
30:51
out?
30:52
So I thought so, I thought so, but did you remember hearing some laughing during your
30:56
prayer?
30:57
I hope not.
30:58
Okay.
30:59
Well, there was laughing going on.
31:00
This is what was happening is my son was doing what he does with me every night when we pray,
31:05
where I will say a line and then he will repeat it.
31:08
And then so he did that when you were praying and all the moms, like Kelsey started crying,
31:13
like she thought I was just the cutest, sweetest thing in the world.
31:15
But I will say, dear God, dear God, we thank you for this day.
31:19
We thank you for this day.
31:21
And then I'll, and now I've started asking him, hey, who do you want to pray for buddy?
31:24
And then he'll just name his friends from school and, you know, and then if he leaves
31:28
someone out, I'll be like, okay, now, and let's pray for mom on data and grandma and
31:31
grandpa and our dogs.
31:33
And like, but it's like part of it's praying for people, part of it's saying thank you,
31:37
but that when you're categorizing them, like you're doing it over and over, like he's,
31:41
this isn't saying, hey, don't say the same words over and over, but that's one thing to
31:45
look at in this prayer.
31:46
It is known for its brevity and simplicity, right?
31:50
And it's like, it was like listening to a child pray is probably like the most beautiful
31:54
thing ever.
31:55
Listen to my five year old daughter pray, she's like, dear Jesus, thank you for sending
31:58
your son.
31:59
Thank you for my house.
32:00
Thank you for, you know, food and like it changes every day, but she's talking about
32:05
what she's thankful for and knows what God provides for.
32:09
And you're just putting those seeds out there and again on the whole prayer thing, I kind
32:12
of have the opposite problem of you, Winkler, not this may sound do she, I hope it doesn't
32:16
come off that way, but it's like, because I've been given the gift of gab and, you know,
32:22
being able to talk and, you know, just flow and use all these words connected to where
32:25
it sounds like mildly coherent, whenever I pray, I have to be like, Hey, tone it down.
32:30
This is a big word time.
32:32
This isn't like make your five bullet points time.
32:35
This is just prayer.
32:36
So when I pray over a meal, it's quick, like I just get it, get it out there and I typically
32:40
in the same way, Derek, I will say, thank you so much for the blessings that you've given
32:44
us, that we can see, but especially for the ones that we cannot, because it's like we're
32:48
blessed a lot, that on the stuff that we recognize, but how else are we blessed?
32:53
Like the thing about this all the time, like I'm the guy that, you know, I get out to the
32:57
truck and it's like crap, I left my keys inside.
32:59
So I run back inside and get my keys and so I'm leaving the house 30 seconds later than
33:03
I would have, but what if I would have been at that intersection where the drunk driver
33:07
was blowing through, blew through the red light, I would have been at the front of that
33:11
section and would have gone and then I would have got hit.
33:13
I think about those times, I will never know until maybe when I get to heaven, all the
33:18
times God was like, we're just going to move this puzzle piece over here.
33:21
We're just going to move that chess piece off the board now.
33:24
And like, but it's like to my redounding benefit.
33:27
We got to keep going.
33:28
We're going to be here all day.
33:29
We've just done the first section.
33:30
So let's talk about fasting a little bit whoever wants to read 16 through 18.
33:36
Volunteers are welcome.
33:37
I got you.
33:38
And when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites for the disfigure their faces
33:43
and their fasting may be seen by others.
33:46
Usually I say to you, they have received their reward, but when you fast, anoint your head
33:49
when washed your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others, but by your father
33:54
who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you.
33:57
That's the third time your father who sees in secret.
34:00
So I was just going to open this up to a discussion because I think the next section where we're
34:04
talking about, you know, laying up treasures and heaven and then anxiety.
34:07
I think we're going to have a whole lot there.
34:08
I've done the Daniel fast before and, you know, it was just doing my best to not be like,
34:14
cool, I'm fasting right now, but I've intermittent fasted for probably five years now.
34:20
And so like I, like, I get hungry obviously, but I've got so much experience dealing with
34:26
being hungry.
34:27
And it's like, I typically wake up and lift or do jujitsu and then it's like five hours,
34:31
six hours until I get to eat.
34:33
So like, I'm fine, like, but there are people who are like, oh my God, I haven't eaten in
34:38
four hours.
34:39
I just don't know what's going to happen.
34:41
It's like, it's a little bit different for different people, but for me, I will say that
34:46
I didn't, again, I don't have a long history with fasting.
34:50
I didn't really get the whole spiritual component.
34:52
It was more of a mental component where it's like, okay, I'm hungry right now.
34:55
Okay.
34:56
Pray.
34:57
You know, God, what are you trying to show me right now?
34:58
And then I felt like he was showing me rib eyes.
34:59
And then it's like, yeah, I was just curious what y'all's experience was.
35:04
I think, I think we moved away from fasting and I think it's something we need to come
35:08
back to.
35:09
Like you said, like I've done the Daniel fast, but when I was doing the Daniel fast, it wasn't
35:13
about necessarily like trying to draw closer to God and trying to draw something out of
35:18
it.
35:19
Because everyone else with the church was doing it, you know, and so like, I think like
35:22
doing a personal fast and trying to draw close to God is something that we should probably
35:26
start doing a little bit more or learning more about because I was, I felt pretty convicted
35:31
reading that.
35:32
And the fact like I haven't, I can't remember a time that I've fasted to just draw closer
35:37
to God and like put him first over whatever I'm going to fast against.
35:42
So for Lent last year, so I take a very, I mean, I again, I was raised Catholic.
35:49
So we did Lent and we gave up things and, you know, it's just kind of been part of my
35:55
life for a very long time.
35:58
What I would say is I look at fasting, not just as something that it's, it's not just
36:02
food.
36:03
It's, to me, it's anything that you feel like is getting in the way or could be getting
36:09
in the way of your relationship with God and replacing that with time with God.
36:17
So this last time, this last Lent, I actually went and said, okay, I'm giving up YouTube.
36:24
Like I'm not watching any YouTube with the exception of I have to fix something in the
36:28
house and I don't know how to do it.
36:30
So that was the only time I was allowed to do it, otherwise can't do it.
36:34
And so what I'm going to do and said, I'm going to read, read books spiritually and
36:41
I'm going to read the Bible more regularly.
36:47
I do think that when you do fast, I think there has to be a spiritual component to it.
36:52
Otherwise it's kind of, it's, you're, you're just not eating or you're just not doing this
36:57
one thing, but I do feel like, you know, there's a, there's a way to fast and to get, give
37:06
up different things because all fasting is, it's basic to me, it's, it's all about trying
37:12
to draw closer to God.
37:14
That's the main goal.
37:17
Also every time I wrote this down, you ever get the feeling like when people start complaining
37:22
about a fast, you ever get the feeling that God is saying, yeah, I know it's hard, shut
37:26
up and just do it.
37:28
Like, when I see somebody complaining about a fast, I'm like, Oh, well, I see who it's
37:33
about.
37:34
Yeah.
37:35
Yeah.
37:36
And that's super for you.
37:37
That's what Christ is talking about right here.
37:38
You know, it's like when somebody's making their fit, they want, they want the attention
37:41
on themselves.
37:42
They're not putting the attention on to God.
37:44
You're fasting.
37:45
Yeah, I don't have a lot of experience.
37:47
I need, I need to be better for sure.
37:49
So you're just naturally skinny.
37:51
Good for you.
37:52
I do the intermittent fasting.
37:53
That's, that's for myself.
37:54
But I agree with you and it shouldn't be just about food.
37:57
No, it's not.
37:58
You know, I'm sorry.
37:59
You're good.
38:00
You're good.
38:01
Go ahead.
38:02
It shouldn't be just about food.
38:03
I mean, there's other things to fast for sure.
38:04
You know, I mean, I'm sure if they had a TV at that time, maybe they fast from TV.
38:07
Yeah, they had to fast from like throwing rocks or whatever.
38:10
What did people do for fun back in the day?
38:12
Like I tried to think about the video games now.
38:15
They stone people for fun.
38:17
Okay.
38:18
I mean, we had gladiator games back then.
38:20
I mean, like literally what they did for fun.
38:23
Wow.
38:24
All right.
38:25
Well guys, if you're looking for something to do this weekend, try grabbing some stone
38:27
stone.
38:28
Stone your neighbor.
38:29
All right.
38:30
Next section here.
38:31
Let's read versus 19 through 24, whoever wants to hit it, go do not lay up yourselves
38:36
treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but
38:41
lay up for yourselves treasures treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rice rust
38:46
destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal for where your treasure is, there
38:52
your heart will be also the eye is the lamp of the body.
38:56
So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
38:59
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.
39:03
If then the light is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?
39:09
No one can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or he
39:13
will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
39:16
You cannot serve God and money.
39:20
So a lot to be talked about here.
39:22
Here's my struggle.
39:23
And again, I'm not contradicting scripture.
39:25
I'm just trying to be open with my struggles as I also try to Google stuff at the same time,
39:29
which is not very helpful.
39:33
I feel this constant nag in me because where is it in scripture that says he who does
39:39
not provide for his family is worse than a nonbeliever.
39:42
And so how do you provide for your family in a lot of ways?
39:45
Part of that is money.
39:46
So like I always get, you know, those really emotional commercials or videos where it's
39:52
like, you know, I worked all the time.
39:55
And then, you know, a family member got sick and then I realized what was important to
40:00
me in life.
40:01
And then they like take the rest of the week off work and to sit at home with their kids.
40:04
How long can you do that before there is no home to hang out with your kids inside of,
40:09
right?
40:10
We all love to eat food and live indoors.
40:12
And so you can't just spend 24/7 with your kids studying the Bible and playing in the
40:17
park at a certain point, dad and or mom and dad got to go to work.
40:22
Like they got to make money so that provision can happen.
40:26
And so there's a very fine line that I feel like people try to tread with this particular
40:31
scripture to where it's like, okay, I'm trying to provide for my family.
40:35
I'm trying to provide not only an income.
40:36
I'm trying to provide something that can be passed on to future generations.
40:40
And at what point is it idolatrous and not provisioned at one point?
40:45
Am I storing up treasures here on earth that mouth will destroy?
40:49
Like is it sinful to buy the can am or to buy, you know, a new hunting blind or the new
40:55
hunting rifle or the new car or at what point is it idolatrous and not just, Hey, the Lord
41:00
has blessed me and this is what I want to get.
41:03
And you give plenty to charity and you get plenty of other people and you write enough
41:05
checks like you kind of see what I'm saying.
41:07
There's a lot of dissonance here, especially in the community we live in.
41:11
Yeah.
41:12
I mean, materialism is alluring.
41:13
I mean, because that's really what you're, I mean, that's what you're fighting against
41:16
to me is when you're accumulating these treasures, you're fighting against materialism.
41:20
I mean, that's, that's where it becomes idolatry is when the focus is more on what I own as
41:27
opposed to what God has given me, you know, but, you know, why is it that we pursue these
41:33
things?
41:34
And there's security, there's personal worth, esteem and value.
41:38
There's power.
41:39
There's, I mean, there's power that comes from financial independence and there's independence.
41:45
And then there's the pleasures that actually, you know, I can take this trip.
41:48
I can, I can do all of these things that, you know, I would not be able to do.
41:54
But you know, I, I, if you're going like, well, what's the bench?
41:58
I don't know if there's like, okay, once you cross this amount of dollar figure, it's
42:03
now a problem.
42:05
I don't think there is.
42:06
There's got to be different for certain people.
42:07
It is.
42:08
I remember hearing, it was, it was one of Joe Rogan's friends, but all of his friends
42:12
were having dinner and they, they're all wealthy people by any standard.
42:17
And they were kind of talking about money and they were kind of asking that question
42:19
Winkler, where it's like, what, how much is enough?
42:22
And somebody piped up and just said, when you can go to just about any restaurant, order
42:26
what you want and not worry about the check, like anything beyond that is just extra.
42:32
Yeah.
42:33
So you're thinking up things that you can spend money on thinking up investments.
42:37
But you know, for, for them, now that could be different for other people.
42:41
But like for them, it was like the moment you can just go go out and eat and these were
42:44
all people that didn't come from money.
42:46
And so for them, they always had to worry about what things cost.
42:49
And so I know it's contextual to the person, but again, I kind of struggle with that because
42:54
like there are things that I would like that take money to purchase.
42:58
And I'm like, is this a, a moral thing for me to even want that?
43:02
Is this a sinful desire to want that thing because my buddy has it and I think it would
43:07
be nice if I had it.
43:08
You see what I'm saying?
43:09
Hmm.
43:10
Derek, what do you think?
43:11
Yeah.
43:12
I mean, I think it goes back to like we were saying earlier, it's a kind of a heart issue.
43:15
Where is your, is that your focus, your motive, your motive, yeah, just to get stuff or is
43:23
it I've been blessed, I can afford this and I can still do all this other stuff.
43:28
I don't know how to weave that into yes, it's right, yes, it's wrong or no, it's wrong.
43:35
But yeah, I'm, it's, it's a line you got to walk, I guess.
43:39
I'd have to agree with you.
43:41
I think it's motive that it comes down to not a benchmark of what to amass.
43:44
Like is your motive to amass earthly wealth?
43:47
And if that's your motive, you have a heart issue, you know, like God has blessed us, our
43:54
family with more than we need and we're able to give and do things that most people can't
44:00
do.
44:01
You know, but my whole motive with my job isn't to amass more money.
44:06
Money is great.
44:07
I like money, but my motive is to build relationships and, and that's where I find, that's where
44:14
I find my gift.
44:15
That's where I find me wanting to do the job that I do even though I don't love it all
44:18
the time.
44:19
But what I do love about it is the relationships that I build.
44:22
And so with the money that comes with it is just something to top it off.
44:26
When I think there's, there's a major problem that I think we would all acknowledge about
44:30
prosperity mindset, I'm going to become a Christian and then God will give me the Cadillac.
44:36
But there's also the poverty mindset, which is very dangerous as well to where Christians
44:40
think in and of itself, having money is a bad thing.
44:43
But look at all these organizations.
44:45
Name your favorite Christian 501(c)(3).
44:49
There are very likely donors with deep pockets that give them lots of money so that they
44:53
can minister to the poor, to the widow and the orphan.
44:57
Think about the Christian ministries that, you know, a few months ago with the Maui fires
45:02
and all those types of things and the devastation we're still finding to this day, the stories
45:07
of just absolute and total devastation.
45:10
There were Christian mission groups on the ground the same day the fires were raging to
45:16
start ministering to people.
45:18
Do you think they were getting their supplies with, they weren't getting it with thoughts
45:23
and prayers and I'm not meaning that to demean thoughts and prayers.
45:26
They had to use money to buy the bottles of water, to buy the soap, to buy the diapers,
45:31
to buy the food.
45:33
And so like this idea that if Christians have money that that's a bad thing, but obviously
45:38
the posture of your heart towards that money, like if you have a lot of money, you think
45:41
this money is going to protect me, this money is going to save me.
45:45
Like if you're putting your faith in salvation for, you know, you're the good works that you've
45:49
done to amass this great wealth, that's a major issue.
45:53
But for Christians to have money, like it's the same thing when people are like, oh, you
45:56
know, Christian shouldn't be in the public square.
45:58
Christians will say that, they're, you know, kind of going back to what we were talking
46:00
about with salt and light, it's like, wait, so you only want atheists running the government.
46:06
Is that is that what you're communicating is kind of the same thing.
46:08
Do you only want atheist charities?
46:12
No, like there are some Christian charities that are supported by onesies and twosies,
46:16
but a lot of these people, it's because they're getting people writing enormous checks.
46:19
Yeah.
46:20
And that's not in and of itself a bad thing.
46:21
Like Psalm 49 20, a man who has riches without understanding is like beast that perish.
46:28
I think it's it's key to understand why you have been blessed with the wealth that you
46:34
might have.
46:36
It is not yours.
46:38
It's one of the things I, I try and tell my daughters, you know, my we do pretty well
46:46
for ourselves and, you know, we just built our home and, and one of the things I told
46:51
my wife is, Hey, if we're going to build this, we have to bring people in.
46:56
Like we, we don't just get to live here on our own.
46:59
We got a, we got to host a lot of stuff because this is going to be a gathering place and
47:08
a place where we can bring people in and hopefully minister to them and bring them to the Lord.
47:14
But there's also the idea of, okay, what are we going to do with all that?
47:18
I mean, what do you do with what you've been given?
47:22
And to that end, you know, we have all the nonprofits and the 501(c)(3)s that you've mentioned.
47:27
What about just your church?
47:28
I mean, there's people who are needing who need you in the church.
47:32
Imagine if churches functioned the way that they were supposed to and how healthy our communities
47:37
would be if like, yeah, you know what, I need something to eat.
47:41
I need some health care.
47:43
I need all of these things.
47:44
I can walk right into this church and find help immediately.
47:49
We don't function that way.
47:51
But we should.
47:52
Yeah, we should.
47:53
I think what really steps out to me is, you know, for where your treasure is, your heart
47:58
will also, you know, it's where is our treasure?
48:03
What is our treasure?
48:04
Where is our heart with that?
48:05
My treasure should be to see the gospel reached among everybody, among the world.
48:11
And is my money going towards that?
48:13
Is my time going towards that?
48:14
If it is, that's great and it should.
48:16
But if I'm also being blessed financially at the same time because of the other job I
48:20
do outside of that, my treasure, you know, my money is going to go to what I treasure
48:25
the most.
48:26
And it's, you know, my treasure isn't to amass more money.
48:28
My treasure is to push the gospel.
48:31
That's good stuff.
48:32
If I wanted to throw out as well, verse 22, the eye is the lamp of the body.
48:35
So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
48:38
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.
48:41
If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?
48:44
So one quick thing is the eye basically reveals the quality of the person's inner life.
48:50
So if you have a good eye, you know, you basically have clear vision.
48:52
If you have a bad eye, bad eye, there's moral corruption.
48:55
And also we see Jesus say this in Luke 11 verse 30, 34, your eye is the lamp of your body
49:01
when your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light.
49:04
But when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.
49:06
Therefore, be careful less the light in you be darkness.
49:09
And so I'm kind of attracted to that because, again, equipping people to push back darkness.
49:13
I look, for examples in scripture of when darkness is pushed back.
49:17
So that's a good thing that I want to talk about before we move on to the very last section.
49:20
So Derek, if you wouldn't mind bringing us home here with 24 through 34, 25 through 34.
49:27
Therefore, I tell you do not be anxious about your life.
49:32
What will you eat or what will you drink or about your body?
49:34
What will you put on?
49:36
It is not life more than food and your body more than clothing.
49:41
Look at the birds of the air.
49:42
They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns and yet their Heavenly Father feeds them.
49:48
Are you not more of value than they?
49:51
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
49:56
And why are you anxious about clothing?
49:59
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.
50:01
They need a toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
50:07
like one of these.
50:09
But if God so closed the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow was thrown
50:13
into the oven, will he not much more clothe you or you of little faith?
50:18
Therefore, do not be anxious.
50:20
Do not be anxious saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear
50:25
for the Gentiles seek after these things and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them?
50:30
All.
50:31
But think, but seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things
50:35
will be added to you.
50:36
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.
50:40
Efficient for the day is its own trouble.
50:43
I mean, there are so many things here, nuggets of wisdom.
50:48
I mean, which of you at this verse 27, which of you by being anxious can add a single hour
50:54
to his lifespan, you know, when you're talking about the birds of the air and either sewing
50:58
or reaping, but they have enough food.
51:00
Now, this is where you get the expression, oh, ye of little faith, oh, you of little faith.
51:06
Verse 32, the Father knows that you need them all when you're talking about all the things
51:11
that you need, he knows that, right?
51:14
But then they're at the beginning or at the very end, rather, verse 34, therefore, do not
51:18
be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.
51:21
Efficient for the day is its own trouble.
51:23
So I struggle with this a lot.
51:26
Now, some people have like actual clinical anxiety, like they have some sort of physiological
51:32
issue that causes them to not be able to regulate their negative emotion that expresses itself
51:38
as anxiety.
51:39
I don't have that, right?
51:40
I don't need, you know, pills or special, you know, prayer groups for that.
51:44
But I'm constantly worried about tomorrow when you're running a business and you can
51:50
only eat what you kill, which I've been in that set up for most of my career.
51:56
That's a, that's a very stressful place to be where you find yourself almost worshipping
52:00
at the altar of closing the sale or getting the deal or getting the donation or whatever
52:04
because it's like, that's my ticket to eating and living indoors.
52:09
And but in addition to the anxiety of provision, I have the anxiety of comparison to where it's
52:15
like, this podcast or just sucks.
52:18
And he has twice the size of my audience and why I ought to, and it's like, I've created
52:23
this anxiety.
52:24
And even when I'm working with my, my voice coach, you know, as I'm trying to rebuild
52:28
my voice, he's like, how you have so much tension.
52:32
And you know, he's, he's talking about my voice and the muscles around my voice, whatever,
52:36
the muscles I used to phone ate.
52:37
And he's just like, everything about you is so like tense and just squeezing and grabbing.
52:44
And for me, like, I will find myself this morning at church.
52:47
I'll have my fist just bald.
52:50
And then I'll kind of realize what it is.
52:51
And then I kind of look down and like release my hands and you see the blood rush is kind
52:54
of back in your hands.
52:56
Like I just carry around this crazy ginger tension at all times, but it causes tremendous
53:03
anxiety.
53:05
And again, I don't mean like anxiety like I'm sitting there like, Oh, my God, I can't
53:09
breathe.
53:10
But it's just like, it causes me to really be worried about tomorrow.
53:14
Can I do what I need to do in the gym?
53:15
Can I do what I need to do at Jiu Jitsu?
53:17
Can I do what I need to do in my marriage and my family and my relationships?
53:20
Am I this?
53:21
Am I that?
53:22
Am I doing the right steps?
53:23
And I just wanted to take a little time to do that soliloquy because I know there are
53:26
guys in the audience that are having that same struggle, you know, because whatever
53:31
their setup is, they're feeling the tension.
53:33
And as a father and as a husband, you should feel that because you shouldn't just feel
53:38
like Willie Nilly.
53:39
Cause if you're feeling Willie Nilly, you're probably not checking the boxes you need to
53:42
because your life's a little bit too easy, but you know, that's just kind of confession
53:46
time for me that as soon as I read this, I just like, you know, kind of put my head
53:49
in my hands.
53:50
I was like, bro.
53:51
Yep.
53:52
Me, me all day.
53:53
Yeah.
53:54
Nothing you need to confess.
53:55
We see it.
53:56
Yeah.
53:57
It's pretty obvious.
53:58
You know when you're upset.
53:59
Yeah.
54:00
No one needed to be let in on that fact.
54:01
No, but it's true though.
54:03
I mean, I, I bring it up, you think it's a joke, but we talked about a couple of episodes
54:07
back about being in a group and being able to be open with each other and talk about
54:12
those hard things.
54:13
And sometimes when we see that, cause like, I think we know each other as friends and
54:18
we know each other as, as men and like when I know Kyle is quiet and he's not joking.
54:23
There's something going on.
54:24
There's a tension there.
54:26
And so I think that's where it's time for me as, as, as a brother and as a friend to
54:30
step up and be like, Hey man, what's going on?
54:33
You know, how, how can I help you?
54:34
What, what, what can we talk about?
54:36
Like today we talked about life insurance when I could have been like, dude, what's
54:40
bothering you?
54:41
But then sometimes I'm like, maybe he doesn't want to talk about it.
54:43
So, but life insurance is an important conversation.
54:45
Guys, if you don't have any, you're an idiot.
54:47
Well, yes, but, but yeah, but I just wanted to point that out.
54:50
Like, cause we, we should be able to cast our anxieties on each other.
54:54
Not only are we casting them on God, but like, he gave us a community for a reason and that
54:59
community is one to worship him and two, to help us find what's right and what is biblical
55:04
and what he, he has for us to provide comfort.
55:09
And as, as a brother, I should have stepped up today and I should have said, Hey man,
55:12
what's going on?
55:13
How can I talk to you?
55:14
You know, how can I pour in your life?
55:15
Yeah, shame on me, shame on me, you know, and then I made it, and then I used it to make
55:19
a joke at the beginning, just failing, all kinds of stuff, but you got me a t-shirt a
55:25
few weeks ago.
55:26
So it's like it works out.
55:27
Okay.
55:28
But no, but that I think that's the thing is like with our anxiety, it's something I deal
55:30
with too, but I always feel better once I go to God or I go to somebody and I can talk
55:35
to them and they can breathe life into me through God's work.
55:39
We've been crucified between two thieves, the regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow.
55:45
That's beautiful.
55:46
Thieves of joy, we just, we are constantly wondering what we missed by not doing certain
55:52
things in the past.
55:53
And we are constantly worried about what decisions lay ahead of us in the future.
55:58
But let go and let God is a fun little saying, but I think it absolves us way too much.
56:06
There's work to do.
56:07
I mean, we are not absolved of work.
56:10
Let go of your anxiety.
56:12
Let go of the control of it, but you are going to have to work on what God wants you to do.
56:19
But I think in that let go and let God is like, there's going to be work, but you got
56:24
to let go and just trust in him.
56:27
That's it.
56:28
That's the let God.
56:29
It's like putting your trust like back to the Lord's prayer, you know, it's like, you
56:33
know, I'm putting my trust in you.
56:35
Well, and so I wanted to kind of throw those out there will because Derek, you're like,
56:39
you're very prolific.
56:40
You have like 17 kids.
56:41
So you probably don't remember it.
56:42
It's not when he didn't have children.
56:43
Same.
56:44
Same board.
56:45
Same board.
56:46
Same board.
56:47
Just two.
56:48
Okay.
56:49
I got two.
56:50
Ryan's got four.
56:51
Yeah.
56:52
I got three.
56:53
Your daddy over here in a lot of ways.
56:56
But I can say this.
56:58
So my wife and I were married for 13 years before we had our first kid.
57:02
He's just just over three years old James.
57:05
And I remember up until the point we had James, you know, guys have different fantasy.
57:10
Some guys fantasize sexually.
57:11
Some guys fantasize about a world where they're in power.
57:14
What my fantasies would always go towards was what if I had started this job at this
57:19
company when I was 22, graduated top of my undergraduate class and I went to go work
57:24
for name a company and like, what if I had been, you know, so around here, pay comms,
57:28
a big company, what if I had started a pay comm when there were like 14 employees and
57:33
now they're like this mega trade on the New York Stock Exchange company and I would be
57:37
like a VP by now.
57:39
This is what life would look like.
57:40
What if I had done taking this route?
57:42
What if I had, you know, tried to go be a green beret out of school or what if I had
57:46
tried to go to the the Naval Academy?
57:48
What if I had tried to?
57:49
That's why where I would always go and I would always be like, okay, well, I could
57:53
have gone to Annapolis and still somehow, like if I knew it, I could have came back
57:57
to Edmund to meet my wife and then convince her to move out to Annapolis and it would
58:01
all worked out.
58:02
So all my scenarios, my wife was still with me.
58:05
But the moment we had James, all that stopped.
58:09
Because at that moment, it was like anything, the butterfly effect, like if we had zigged
58:15
and set a zag at any point along the along the way, I don't have James.
58:19
That's it.
58:20
It had nagled my way to still have in my bride, but I wouldn't have had James, wouldn't have
58:25
had Eli.
58:26
I even think about it in terms of my dog, my dog and my best friend in the world.
58:29
Like when that dog turned three, I started being emotional about the fact that that dog
58:32
was going to die someday.
58:34
And like just thinking about it, I'd be like, okay, don't talk about it.
58:36
I'm talking about it.
58:37
That's my dog.
58:38
But it's just like I wouldn't have Roman.
58:39
I wouldn't have my dog because everything would be different.
58:43
So that revelation and that mind shift, that complete change in my brain happened right
58:49
at that moment when we had our first kid.
58:52
And so I'm like, what is the next thing I should be looking for where that will just
58:56
clink and be true with all of my life to where it's just like, dude, you are where you
59:01
are right now.
59:02
Because right now, I'm like, gosh, what if I had started my podcast when I was still
59:05
an undergrad, right?
59:06
Because I was listening to podcasts then there was only like 12 of them available, but I
59:10
was listening to them.
59:11
It's like, what if like, what would the world have been like, you know, what if I had started
59:15
my YouTube channel and no one knew what YouTube was and like, now I'm doing those types of
59:20
things to where it's like, okay, I wonder if I could still have Kelsey and the kids and
59:24
have done this.
59:25
But that's how anxiety and this type of comparison model manifests for me.
59:30
And I'm just waiting.
59:31
When does that other shoe drop to where I'm not like looking backwards and with regret,
59:37
but looking forwards with excitement?
59:38
Does that make sense?
59:39
Yeah.
59:40
Yeah.
59:41
So I'll try and share, I'll try and be brief because I know we're getting close to the
59:45
end here, but five, five years ago, when my mother passed away, you know, she was given
59:52
to diagnosis and she was given six months to live and I was working at a job where every
59:56
busy season I was working 80, 90 hour weeks for six, 12 weeks out of the year, especially
1:00:02
in the fall.
1:00:04
And I went through the fall was working all these hours that after she had gotten the diagnosis,
1:00:09
I had told my bosses, Hey, she got six months of lives in my last like holidays with my
1:00:13
mother.
1:00:14
I want to make sure I can spend some time with her.
1:00:16
It didn't matter.
1:00:17
It didn't care.
1:00:18
Worked anyway.
1:00:19
And came back after Christmas and was just like, I'm quitting, I'm getting out of here.
1:00:23
I'm leaving.
1:00:24
There's no point in me being here.
1:00:25
They don't care about me.
1:00:27
And I remember going through this whole process and just starting to interview and I get an
1:00:30
offer from another company and my wife goes, she goes, you make it all these moves.
1:00:34
Have you prayed about any of this?
1:00:36
No, and so she goes, you should probably start with that.
1:00:42
So I prayed and I had this offer letter in my hand.
1:00:45
I had already gone and taken it to my boss and said, Hey, I got this offer.
1:00:49
He asked if he could have the weekend to see what he could do to keep me.
1:00:53
And I felt I heard really clearly from God that you're supposed to stay.
1:00:58
And I said, I come out of the room, I was myself came out of the room and tell my wife I have
1:01:05
to stay.
1:01:06
So he was working on a salary increase and everything.
1:01:09
And he says, I texted him immediately, I said, Hey, just so you know, whether you can do
1:01:12
anything, I'm staying.
1:01:13
Doesn't matter.
1:01:14
Have to stay.
1:01:17
And he was real relieved and then we fast forward three years later, I work harder than I ever
1:01:24
have.
1:01:25
And we hit the, I'm sorry, two years later, harder than I ever have hit the pandemic.
1:01:30
And suddenly, I have this new offer that came to me and I'm, you know, to become a partner
1:01:37
at my now firm and I'm like, I'm doing it.
1:01:41
I'm ready to go.
1:01:42
And what's the first thing my wife says, I have you prayed about it.
1:01:46
I share this because I was so worried that I was not going to get where I wanted to be
1:01:52
at my previous job.
1:01:54
And the moment I decided to actually give up that anxiety to God and say, do you want me
1:01:58
here or not?
1:02:00
I got an answer.
1:02:02
And then when this new opportunity came along and my wife said, go pray about it.
1:02:06
All I heard was, this is why, this is why you have to stay.
1:02:12
So understand that you may be, you may not get the answer to the prayer that you want.
1:02:17
You may be really anxious about the fact that I got to do this and give it up to God.
1:02:21
And then God says the answer, the opposite answer of what you want, but it could just
1:02:26
be purifying you and making you better for what's coming.
1:02:30
And I think that's an important lesson.
1:02:32
I appreciate you.
1:02:33
You sharing that.
1:02:34
Additional of that.
1:02:35
I remember I've shared this before, but in between my two vocal chord surgeries, someone,
1:02:41
you know, when I'm trying to figure out, like, is this, is this it, like, have I lost my
1:02:45
career?
1:02:46
Like, what other options are there?
1:02:47
Like, I don't want to fly planes, but I don't think pilots have to talk that much.
1:02:49
Because they just stick the microphone directly into their mouth.
1:02:52
So they're under a program or something like that.
1:02:54
That's what you told me to do.
1:02:56
Right.
1:02:57
No, no, no.
1:02:58
That would be like you.
1:02:59
I like that.
1:03:00
It's different.
1:03:01
I probably shouldn't have put that in my mouth.
1:03:03
Don't say it.
1:03:04
Don't say it.
1:03:05
Nobody say it.
1:03:06
Nobody say it.
1:03:07
But like the whole, the whole thing, whenever someone threw this out there was just some random
1:03:13
person in my inbox.
1:03:14
They were like, Hey, man, you need to consider the fact that God may have already used your
1:03:18
voice for what he needed it to.
1:03:20
Like, you've got close to 500 episodes out there.
1:03:23
You've got a bunch of interviews.
1:03:24
You've spoken live a lot.
1:03:25
God may have used, he may have squeezed out the last little bit of your voice for his
1:03:28
glory.
1:03:29
And you may need to deal with that because we all think we're entitled to our talents
1:03:31
forever and that you should trade your money for my talent, right, whether you're working
1:03:37
for the Fed or, you know, a government or you're even doing your own business.
1:03:41
And that's kind of the thing that that's obviously not the direction that we went.
1:03:45
But what if that were the case and I kept trying to force it, right?
1:03:48
I kept trying to force this whole thing.
1:03:50
No, I'm going to do it.
1:03:51
I just got to leave it harder now and it's just like that's, that's, that's really not
1:03:55
the point.
1:03:56
And so I know there's a lot of anxiety, a lot of us cause our own anxiety by scrolling
1:04:00
on Instagram and playing the comparison trap comparing, you know, your wife to your neighbor's
1:04:05
wife or your car to your neighbor's car or your kids, your neighbor's kids, and you create
1:04:10
that type of attitude and it's only going to lead to anxiety and self selfishness because
1:04:16
you're going to be, you're going to be lamenting the things that you have that had you not
1:04:21
had them.
1:04:22
You would have been begging for them as a blessing.
1:04:24
Think about this way.
1:04:25
Like you got people that are like, Oh, it's my kids just fricking suck.
1:04:28
And then you got people that can't have kids cause they can't even get pregnant and they
1:04:31
would love your crappy kids.
1:04:32
Right?
1:04:33
You know what I mean?
1:04:34
Like give me those little [inaudible].
1:04:36
Like I'll take them.
1:04:37
And, but the same thing, like the people that are just struggling in their marriage and
1:04:40
they just hate it.
1:04:41
And it's just terrible.
1:04:42
Like what about the single people that are so desperate to be in, in a marriage, even
1:04:47
a crappy one?
1:04:48
And that's just, you know, kind of where it goes.
1:04:50
You make a great point.
1:04:51
I was just thinking about when you talked about last time about like, what would my life
1:04:54
been like?
1:04:55
If I wouldn't went and did this and went and did that.
1:04:58
And I've had those same thoughts back in the day where it's like, Oh man, if I wasn't married,
1:05:01
I'd be having like a Ferrari and, you know, I would live in Chicago on a, you know, the
1:05:06
20th floor, you know, all these great ideas.
1:05:09
But then I think about it.
1:05:11
I can't imagine my life without my wife can imagine my life without my children.
1:05:16
And like, God had a better plan for me than I had for myself.
1:05:20
And I think that's one thing that we have to look at when we have that with those anxieties.
1:05:24
God's plan is better than whatever we can conceive ourselves.
1:05:28
I agree.
1:05:29
That's a great place to leave it guys.
1:05:30
We will leave it there.
1:05:31
But come back here next Sunday where we are going to dig into Matthew seven.
1:05:34
