This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast. I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it.
1:25
Welcome back to the Forging Table. The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping
1:28
men to push back darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience.
1:32
At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys foraging spiritual resilience by
1:36
digging into God's Word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with us.
1:39
That's Derek. That's Winkler. That's Horn. But right before we got started, Ryan, like,
1:43
you know what's the most annoying thing when someone offers to buy your lunch and you,
1:47
because everyone else at the table understood the assignment. Derek, the new guy,
1:50
he ordered something that was on the menu. Winkler ordered something that was on the menu.
1:54
You just made something up out of thin air and so I go to the menu and you were the last guy that
1:59
I had to put on this order and you ordered something that literally no one has ever ordered in the
2:04
history of humanity. What was I supposed to do? Like, I should have just got you like,
2:07
I don't even know the worst thing, just like only onions for lunch. McAllisters used to have
2:13
an orange cranberry club. Can anyone in the audience even confirm that that actually happened?
2:18
Have you all heard of this thing? Because I've been to McAllisters a lot.
2:21
Somebody, somebody get on a dotted dot life on Facebook. Don't go in the comment section,
2:27
I won't read it. Yeah, you do. No, no, that's what you're for. You get mad for me. I get bad for
2:34
you. It's the Instagram that you do their comment section. Oh, I just, you know, it's kind of like
2:38
a little cursory glance. Insta. No, no, just a little bit. But yeah, somebody put in Instagram
2:43
that there used to be a cranberry club. But yeah, no, I made it easy. I just said,
2:46
give me what Derek's getting. I'll eat that. Derek didn't even put down what chips he wanted.
2:50
You made it. It doesn't matter because I just added them on there because I didn't want to ask
2:53
Derek and have him think about it for the next like week and a half. But yeah, the thing about it
2:58
is you only did that. You said you made it easier. This was after you made it so incredibly hard.
3:03
Arby's I wanted so did I like hey, you guys voted against Arby's what like what is okay.
3:08
We're not even we can't get into Matthew four and to understand what y'all's problem with Arby's
3:13
is why did you vote for it? I need any of them. He didn't vote at all. I gave you options. I was
3:25
like, you know, Papa John's Arby's or McAllister. And I just kind of threw McAllister's in there
3:28
because that's what white people like. And then everybody voted for McAllister actually wanted
3:32
Jersey mics, which is the worst menu choices, which goes back to my initial point of Ryan makes
3:39
everything more difficult. I gave you all three options and he goes through a fourth option that
3:44
wasn't even on there. What was it like? What was like the best case scenario? You said it was the
3:48
best case scenario. Super white. So I was like Jersey my Scott. She steaks. What are you saying?
3:54
Is she steaks like? Okay, I'm going to cut this out. I'm going to cut this out before we like
4:01
break the racist barrier on the show for the very first time. So kids listening at a home if
4:05
people give you three options for food that they are buying for you, just order something that's on
4:11
the menu and don't suggest a fourth option. Does that work? Does that work? All I know,
4:16
this guy didn't make a decision. And this is why we're in this predicament. Derek was the first
4:19
one to respond. He was the first one to respond to tell me what he wanted. It was a sandwich with
4:23
chips on it, which makes me like him even more bonds. He was first. He responded first. I don't think
4:29
it was first. Do you have the receipts? Yeah. Hey, but we're going to get into Matthew four.
4:33
We're going to get into Matthew four right down. So here's the thing. Ryan, could you actually read
4:37
Matthew four verse one verse one just one. Then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the wilderness
4:45
to be tempted by the devil. So right from the beginning here, it was one of those times where
4:49
it's like, I've read that before. I've read that a lot before. But then I was struck by
4:53
wait a minute. Wait a minute. Jesus was led up by the spirit to be tempted in the wilderness
5:01
by the devil. And I was like, hold on. I don't think I've ever heard a pastor talk about that.
5:06
I don't think I that ever made, like made me pause before, but I immediately pause and I wrote
5:11
the Holy Spirit literally all caps led him into temptation. And then upon further review,
5:19
right after the challenge flag was thrown, I was like, wait, this is wild. Like, what does this mean
5:24
for us on an everyday basis? And then for you more mature Christians that can read out there,
5:29
it's, it's obvious in light. I mean, I meant to have somebody, would you mind looking up James
5:33
113 real quick or four? But I was just like, wait a minute, if the Holy Spirit is leading us
5:38
into temptation, like, well, like what kind of ramifications are there for us just in our normal
5:44
everyday life? And so I was like, Oh my gosh, we're being led. But Ryan, whenever you get James
5:50
113, go ahead and read that for us. This is NASB. But let no one say when he is tempted,
5:56
I am being tempted by God for God cannot be tempted with evil. And he himself tempts no one.
6:02
So in light of that, you know, if you're going to let scripture, read scripture, interpret scripture,
6:08
it's like God doesn't tempt us to do evil. But he does test our characters. He does put us
6:15
into situations where our character would be tested. Probably the most prolific example of
6:19
that would be Job, obviously. But that's where I wanted to start a discussion on Matthew four,
6:23
because it's like, that's not the that's not the thing. Like, that's that's not the thing you're
6:28
supposed to sit and talk about with Matthew four. There's so many other things. It's shockful with
6:32
so many things that we're going to get to, but right from the jump, I was like, Oh, man, to just,
6:35
you know, stop me in my tracks. Yeah, I think when you look at temptation and testing, they're
6:40
the flip side of the same coin. I do think God allows us to be tempted. He is not the tempter.
6:48
But he allows us to be tempted, just like he allowed Jesus to be tempted. And why would he allow this
6:53
why would he allow this temptation? Well, the father is using Satan to strengthen Jesus for his
6:59
messianic role. He's that temptation and Jesus turning away from it is empowering him. It is
7:07
strengthening him. It's it seems odd to say it, but if you are tempted, and you can, you know,
7:14
refute those temptations by invoking Jesus and being armed with with scripture. If you can do
7:22
that, it is strengthening your faith. It's strengthening you every time you just have you have to resist
7:27
it and you're going to need tools to do so. I think it's a good thing to look at that. We're,
7:32
you know, Jesus is the son of God. He's also the son of man. And so man is going to have temptations.
7:38
Man is going to be tempted. And I think this is bringing out his, his son of man qualities. And,
7:44
and he's going to have, he's going to run into the same temptations that we run into because he is
7:49
in the flesh. And so he's got to be able to maneuver through those just like at the Garden of Gethsemane.
7:55
You know, he's like, do I have to do this? Or he's, he's into his, his, you know, a fleshly moment,
8:01
a son of man moment where his humanity is shining through. And so I think through this is showing
8:07
that we as humans are going to be tempted by the devil. And so Christ is now being tempted in his
8:13
human form. First Corinthians 1013, no temptation has overtaken you,
8:18
except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond
8:23
what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
8:30
I, I don't know. I was looking at this last night whenever I was studying for it. And I was,
8:36
I was talking to my wife about temptation and how this, you know, how it affects us.
8:41
And I started to go and it feels like Satan is Lucy. And I am Charlie Brown waiting to kick the
8:48
football. And she goes, what are you talking about? And I said, Oh, let me, let me pull this up on
8:54
YouTube so you can see it. So I pull it up. And there is a 15 minute clip of Lucy pulling the
8:59
football away from Charlie Brown over and over and over again. And each time, each time she's telling
9:06
him she's using, Oh, it's tradition. Oh, it's, Oh, you could do it. This time I won't do it. It's
9:14
reassuring. It's, you know, it's Satan will use all of these tricks just to get you to kick the
9:20
football. When, and every time the first time she actually proposes the idea of him doing it,
9:27
every single time Charlie goes, what do you think I'm an idiot? I'm not doing that.
9:31
And then it's just over and over. No, let me convince you I can convince you to do this.
9:35
And then he does. And then he ends up flat on his back with the same look on his face.
9:41
Why did I even try and do this? I think it's interesting to look at that he fasted for 40 days
9:48
and 40 nights where he was hungry. It's like just imagine like putting yourself through the
9:53
wringer, like doing the the Murph and then not eating for 40 days after that. Like, what would
9:58
you do for a Klondike bark event? You know what I'm saying? I kiss a dude. I'll tell you right
10:02
now. That's 100% what would happen. But I'm here exactly right. The reason why Charlie Brown,
10:10
which by the way, thank you for doing a reference at only people born in the 1900s. We'll understand
10:14
that. So appreciate that. But yeah, it's living in a new world.
10:18
That's right. But so the reason why he kept trying to kick at the balls, because he was
10:24
actually convinced this time will be different. And Satan has a tremendous ability to be like,
10:29
you know what? This time will be different, right? He's going to lead you into temptation,
10:33
thinking that this time will be different, even though he knows that it's not. But Derek,
10:36
if you wouldn't mind reading verses two through six, please two through six and after fasting 40
10:42
days and 40 nights, he was hungry. And the temper came and said to him, if you are the son of God,
10:47
command these stones to become loaves of bread. He answered, it is written, man shall not live
10:53
by bread alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God. And the devil took him to the
10:59
holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, if you were the son of God,
11:03
throw yourself down for it is written, he will command his angels concerning you. And on their
11:08
hands, they will bear you up unless you strike your foot against a stone. So a lot of things here.
11:13
Jesus could not start his earthly ministry until he was baptized and until he was tested.
11:19
So there's something to think about there for parents out there that are sending their kids to
11:26
public school and their kids are not professing Christians and they have not been trained.
11:30
And you're like, well, that's their mission field. It's like every time that we see missionaries
11:34
described in the Bible, they were adults and they were trained before they were sent.
11:37
So just there's a few things there that, you know, he had to be tempted, basically put through the
11:41
fire and baptized before he was ready for his earthly ministry. But then we get into Satan's actual
11:48
temptations here. And one thing I thought was interesting is when Satan said, if you are the
11:52
son of God, that word, if as it was written down, it's more like sense. So people weren't like,
11:59
so the way that this is written down is since you are the son of God, at no point here is Satan
12:04
saying he's not divine, saying he's not the son of God. So that's something that's very,
12:08
very important. He's not like, you know, if you are the man, you say you are like, that wasn't
12:12
really the crux of the temptation. But the very first one was like, he's playing on his emotions
12:18
and feelings as a human. You know, again, 40 days, 40 nights, these are the only temptations
12:23
that were described. But if you're being tempted for 40 days and 40 nights, we can assume
12:27
that there would be many more temptations just from the ones that were listed. But
12:31
these were listed for a reason to teach us something about the heart of God and about the story of
12:36
Jesus. But then it's that second one. And Ryan, I know you're talking about the bicks, we were
12:40
talking about this in Sunday school today, that the devil is using scripture, specifically
12:46
to tempt the son of God. And we live in a moment where people will twist scripture. They're not
12:52
using it. They're twisting scripture to make their point, which isn't it so interesting
12:57
aligns with their leftist policy prescriptions, or their liberal worldview, or their progressive
13:03
sensibilities and not progressive in the sense that, as you know, Doug Wilson would say progressing
13:07
towards an ideal of a God driven world, but it's progressing away from him, which is to say,
13:15
regressive. But I thought it was so interesting because he says he will command his angels
13:19
concerning you. And on their hands, it will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against the stone.
13:24
He's he's talking about Psalm 9, he won 11 and 12, but doesn't isn't it so interesting that Satan
13:29
leaves out verse 13, where it says the serpent, you will trample underfoot. And so it's like,
13:34
he's leaving out the exact part that would be him cutting off his nose despite his face.
13:39
So I don't really want to say much more because I've said a hundred things that y'all can respond
13:42
to, but let's dig into that right there. What do you got, Derek?
13:46
I was going to say I think it's pretty cool. After 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.
13:52
Doesn't necessarily say he was hungry during those 40 days and 40 nights. And that the
13:57
temptation, whatever is, turn these stones into bread so you can eat. I remember who I was listening
14:03
to. I think it might have been an Alistair bag, but he was like, make this. If you ever seen the dog,
14:10
like a military dog, this guy's eyes focused on the master. The dog doesn't know what's going on
14:17
around him. His eyes are focused. So it's kind of like God is, or Jesus is focused on the master
14:25
living on God's word, but he's not even hungry. He's not, he's not tempted by what the devil's
14:32
doing at the time. I don't know. It's kind of what he's kind of stuck out to me there. I thought it's
14:36
kind of cool. I see where you're coming from. I mean, if you look at it, excuse me, man,
14:41
should not live by bread alone. It's like, yeah, we need food, but that fulfills us in one way,
14:48
but God's word fulfills us in so much more than just the bread that we, I mean, it's the bread of
14:54
life. And so it's the bread that we should strive for and look towards rather than, hey, where's my
15:01
next meal coming from? Because we'll get into that later on in Matthew about where that comes from.
15:04
But he's basically saying, you know, my, my side on God is more than what's rumbling in my stomach.
15:12
Right. I think I want to be careful here. I think something that's not what this show is about.
15:17
I'm sorry. No, no, no, I'm, I'm going to say I want to be careful with how we're
15:21
phrasing this the 40 days and 40 nights. Okay. I think as Christians, we de-emphasize
15:26
Jesus's humanity way too much. Okay. Think about, I mean, he's fully God and fully man.
15:34
Imagine going 40 days without food.
15:37
Imagine that. How weak would you be? How, I mean, how hard would that be? He felt the same pain
15:46
that we do. He bled the same blood that we do. And to think that, well, he was God and he's just
15:53
kind of above all these. Of course, he's above all things, but that's the entire idea behind Satan
15:58
tempting him. He's now one of us. He's now one of us. These would get to us. How weak are we? If,
16:06
if you, if you, well, you said I'd kiss a dude. I mean, I would double down.
16:12
But how, how weak are we as humans? I mean, the, how often do our temptations get the better of us?
16:20
And, and we're not even fasting. I mean, it's literally like the idea that, well, I've been doing
16:25
it all this time. And you know what, I can do it this one more time. And then I'll stop.
16:30
Well, I think, I think you make a great point. I mean, that's the point is 40 days and 40 nights,
16:34
he hasn't eaten. And he's like, here, I'm going to test your tummy. I mean, well, this guy will
16:39
kiss a dude for a Klondack bar. You know, we don't have to keep saying that. Like, it was just a one
16:44
time thing. But yeah, we get the point. We get it. Well, it's going to be part of lore. Like,
16:49
sorry, Joby now. But, but Christ, like you're breaking up a great point in that he's hungry,
16:56
he's starving. And he wants food, but then he points out the word scripture and how
17:03
and more important it is than the rumble in his stomach and the food that he needs right now.
17:08
He's pointing out scripture. And then so if you look at where we're going at, he points out
17:13
scripture in God's word. And then now Satan tries to use scripture to trip him up. And so how many,
17:21
you know, that's where it's, you know, we were talking about today is, you know, people twisting
17:26
scripture. It's like, how many times do people twist scripture just to fit their narrative,
17:31
to fit what they want? That's what Satan's doing right now. He's like, I wouldn't tempt this guy.
17:36
So I want to use scripture. And I'm going to throw him off, you know, he, what's your mind doing in
17:41
40 days with no food? I mean, I can tell you my mind in 12 hours with no food, I'm pretty crazy.
17:46
Well, so I think the other thing that's important for us to understand here is I've grown to become
17:51
weary of people that use a bunch of scriptures from different parts of the Bible in one sermon
17:58
to make a singular point. Because now I recognize that as a content creator, it's like, okay,
18:02
let's say I need to make a point. How would I backfill it with scripture? Just freaking just that one,
18:07
that one, that one, that one, that one, and just kind of throw it all out there. Because, you know,
18:12
text without context is just text. And when you pull these scriptures out of the context of
18:17
who was this message for? What is this describing? What is the genre of scripture that's coming
18:22
from? Is it a historical genre? Is it wisdom literature? Is it, you know, revelation? Like,
18:29
there are a lot of different things that that could be talked about here. But the thing that's
18:32
also very important is Satan is so crafty. He's not just tempting Jesus in this moment. So I'm
18:39
specifically talking about where he took him to the pinnacle of the temple. And then, you know,
18:43
if you look at different descriptions, we're talking between 300 and 450 foot drop from that
18:48
temple to basically the bottom of the valley, right? So he's not just tempting Jesus. He's
18:54
tempting the would be followers of Jesus. And this is what I mean. Because if Jesus did,
19:00
just, you know, call down angels to basically keep him from falling and splatting on the ground,
19:05
the people would have made him king immediately. And if they make him king immediately, this is
19:11
what the Moody commentary pointed out. Yeah, he gets to bypass the cross. And how important is that?
19:18
So if Satan gets Jesus to acquiesce to his temptation, it doesn't just affect Jesus. It affects
19:26
multitudes of people, right? And then we're not talking about the same story. We're not
19:30
talking about this at all, frankly. And so I think that's really important to discuss.
19:34
I mean, it's the truth. I mean, if he kept the angels, he would have been made king. He would
19:40
have been ruler. He wouldn't have fulfilled his mission of dying on the cross. I mean,
19:44
no one's going to crucify a ruler. You know, at that point, maybe the Romans could add.
19:50
But yeah, I mean, God has a plan for everything and everything that God wants to do, he's going
19:57
to do. And we're looking at Christ, you know, though he's in human form and he's in flesh,
20:03
he's still Christ and he's still God and he still has a plan of what he wants to do. And his redeeming
20:08
factor wasn't, wasn't politics. It wasn't, you know, social order, his redeeming factor was to
20:13
save us from our sins. I do think one thing when we talk about these temptations,
20:20
and Satan is tempting Jesus in different ways. So again, linking the Bible back, I was,
20:28
as I was looking at you have the Jesus is basically he's claiming victim, I'm sorry, victory over
20:34
original sin with Adam. Okay, he's claiming victory over that because Adam failed in the absolute
20:40
best conditions. And now Jesus is winning in the absolute worst. He's also reclaiming the victory
20:47
for Moses and Israel. Because each of Jesus's replies to Satan comes from Deuteronomy, which is
20:55
Moses final narration to the Israelites. So Israel had the endowment of the spirit given to them.
21:00
And Jesus was fully obedient to the spirit where the nation was not so they the temptations
21:06
reenact Israel's history, but victoriously. And then finally, he's claiming victory because
21:12
it is a confirmation of his identity and his mission as the son of God. So I think it again,
21:18
I look at you go back to all the way to original sin and then to Moses and the Israelites and the
21:25
sin that they committed. And Jesus is right off the bat, Satan tempting those same, the him in the
21:32
same way he tempted Adam, Moses and the Israelites. And he's like, not today, not happening to me.
21:38
Yeah, absolutely. And we see right there in verse seven, you know, Jesus responds again. He just
21:43
says again, it is written that again is very important to where it's like, it's almost like
21:47
Jesus Saint looks at him. I know what you're doing. And so I'm going to use scripture to push back
21:51
against you and specifically push back against your, you know, wrong use of scripture. Winkler,
21:57
could you read verses eight through 11, please? There's one thing I wanted to go off and seven
22:02
real quick. Actually, this kind of goes back to a time that you a couple months back with
22:08
a life church and the whole tithing thing. And this thing kind of reading this passage and reading
22:14
what Christ says here, made me want to go back and look at some things. When he says, again,
22:18
it is written, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test. And so we both know that what
22:24
they're doing over there right now is is providing, you know, hey, three months to provide. Go ahead,
22:29
go ahead. Go ahead. You were about to do the context. Go ahead. Yeah, to provide the context.
22:32
They're basically saying, tie it for three months. And if you don't see any blessings, we'll give
22:39
you your money back. And so I've, I've kind of come out against that, but I have, you know,
22:45
some family members who go to go to life church. And they said, well, God says in Malachi 10,
22:51
test me. And so I'm like reading this. And then I'm like, and that family members telling me
22:56
back in Malachi 10, 310, it says to test me. And so I went back and looked at that. And so,
23:03
so what I struggled with that. And so in Malachi 10, God says, test me and basically
23:08
what what in 13 or excuse me, 310, excuse me. Sorry, Joby.
23:12
Bring the full time. Yeah. Malachi 310. Bring the full tides into the storehouse that there may
23:18
be food in my house and thereby put me to the test says the Lord of hosts. If I will not open the
23:23
windows of heaven for you and pour down for you blessing until there is no more need. And so
23:31
their, their defense to what they're doing is Malachi 310. And so I'm like, God calls us to test
23:39
him. But right here in this scripture, it says, one should not put the Lord to the test. Well,
23:44
then you go back to Elijah and Elijah to go up against Baal. I pronounce that right,
23:50
Baal did it wrong. So to go up against Baal in the, in the king at that point, you know,
23:55
they put God to the test, you know, he's like, Hey, let's put my God to the test. Let's build,
24:00
let's build an altar and let's start a fire and see what happens. So God's put to the test there.
24:04
And I'm like, okay, is, is this what what it's coming about? And it is to a point in, in, in what
24:11
they're doing here is that right here in Malachi 310, we went to Nehemiah a couple months ago.
24:18
And during Nehemiah, we talked about towards the end, the storehouses, the storehouses were empty.
24:23
They weren't holding up their end of the bargain. And so God is basically saying, Hey,
24:26
you're putting your faith into something else other than me. And you're not fulfilling your part
24:32
of the covenant, the covenant of keeping my storehouses and keeping my Levites and everybody,
24:38
the tax that's supposed to be given. And so he's saying, Hey, I know it's been a tough time,
24:45
put me to the test. Let's go ahead and see that I'll bring blessings upon the nation of Israel.
24:51
Well, that's during this covenant. And so during Malachi, that's during this covenant.
24:55
And so now we're no longer putting God to the test. God's already been put to the test. This,
24:59
you know, this has already been done. And so they're, they're basically what they're doing,
25:03
if they're doing what the Israelites did in regards to the rock and the water, they're saying, God,
25:08
I want, you know, we're thirsty. Moses, what are you going to do about this? You know, well,
25:12
our God's not doing what he told us he was going to do. Our God's not taking care of us.
25:18
And so God allows them to strike the stone and bring water. So they put God to the wrong test.
25:22
Right. And I feel like and they put human strictures on the test. Yes. Yes. And so that's what you're
25:28
seeing with what the church, the life church is doing right now. It is not the right way to put
25:34
God to a test. You're testing God based upon your own earthly blessings. And you need to give with
25:39
a grateful heart. You need to give without expecting blessings. You don't, you give for that three
25:44
months. And if nothing happens, you put your faith back in God and you keep giving, you know,
25:49
it's the pragmatic approach over the biblical approach. Because again, I attended the church
25:53
for over 10 years. And every time they talked about that, I'm like, that sounds like a really
25:57
good idea. I get people to start tithing and it gets them past that 21 days. It's now a habit and
26:03
blah, blah, blah. And then if they don't see it, you know, they at least can get their money back
26:06
and, you know, pay their bills or something like that. But then again, text without context is just
26:11
text. And that's kind of the problem with, you know, just taking something out of Malachi and
26:15
then applying it to something, you know, broader than that. And the new covenant, there isn't a 10%.
26:20
There isn't a tax at all. It's giving with a grateful heart. That's what Christ wants to see.
26:24
That's what God wants to see out of us. And I don't remember the 90 day money back guarantee
26:29
in the older. So there is that but Winkler, he doesn't come with a warrant. No,
26:34
I wanted to bring that up. I just wanted to bring that up. That's good stuff. All right,
26:39
hit 11 through or eight through 11, please. You got it. Again, the devil took him to a very high
26:43
mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him,
26:48
all these I will give you if you will fall down and worship me. And Jesus said to him,
26:53
be gone, Satan, for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God and him only you shall serve.
27:00
Then the devil left him and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
27:04
So that concludes the temptation of Jesus. The one thing I did want to point out just briefly
27:09
in verse nine, and he said to them, all these I will give you if you will fall down and worship
27:15
me. He's offering Jesus a shortcut. And as we all know at this point, if someone ever offers you a
27:22
shortcut, we should be very, very wary of that. Hey, here's your shortcut to fitness. Here's your
27:27
shortcut to more money. Here's your shortcut to more prominence. Here's your shortcut to more
27:31
followers like most of those things are not that there's something else happening there. I'm thinking
27:38
about there's this new kind of medication going around that people are using off label to try and
27:43
lose weight. And they're like, this is great. And this is awesome. The problem that they're seeing
27:47
is wouldn't you know it? There are really horrific side effects for losing it for that purpose
27:52
or using that particular off label medication ozemic that for using it for that purpose. And
27:57
the other thing is, is like these people are losing weight on the scale, but they're also losing
28:00
muscle tissue and connective tissue. So they're skinny fat now. And so it's like now they're open
28:05
up to more injuries and all that. And like the whole the whole idea is I was reading this. There's
28:08
no such thing as a free lunch. There's always somebody that will come calling and there's always
28:12
when you look at new modern worldly wisdom, it's the wisdom of shortcuts, right? Do this and you
28:18
will get a shortcut. But there is no shortcut to wisdom. There's no shortcut to a better diet.
28:22
There's no shortcut to any of these things. It's daily boring discipline in the exact same direction.
28:28
So I got two people pointing at me. So who's going to get after I want to go first is because
28:32
we're talking about the ozemic. You know me, I'm on a weight loss journey right now. So I finally
28:38
realized that I'm insanely overweight. But it was something back during the Nehemiah thing that we
28:45
went over over the book Nehemiah where you had a friend who or a person reach out to you and said
28:49
his buddy's not going to work out because he wants to focus more on theology and ministry rather
28:55
than his personal health. And I never really had that. But I was like, I need to focus on that.
29:00
Ozemic was brought up for me. They're like, hey, you want to lose it fast? We can go ahead and give
29:04
you the shot. And I was like, no, I need to make this a lifestyle. I need to make this something
29:09
that I lose the weight naturally. And I do it by hard work and by eating the right portions and
29:14
eating the right things. And I was like, I know that there's shortcuts, but those shortcuts are
29:19
only a time in a season because I'll take those shortcuts. I may lose 50 pounds, which is, you know,
29:24
my goals, my goals 45, I may lose 50 pounds. But after I lose that 50 pounds, I'm going to go
29:30
back to the way I was eating before, probably. And you know what's going to happen? I'm going to
29:34
gain it all back. So you have to make a lifestyle choice. It's just like you have to repent. You
29:40
have to change your mind. Rather than taking the shortcuts around it, you've got to change your
29:44
mind and know I'm going to have to put in the hard work. I'm going to have to do things I don't
29:48
want to do. I'm going to have to listen to Kyle give me a hard time about things and make me mad.
29:53
But you know what? It just makes me work harder. And it makes me want to be shove it in his face.
29:58
That's right. That's what I do. When you arrive, you will know that you got there the right way
30:02
because I like, you know, we'll keep it simple. In high school sports, there were people that
30:07
were doing things to get advantages that I was unwilling to do. And that some of those were
30:13
synthetic, some of those were just relational. But it's like, when you earned it, well, I'll
30:17
say it this way. One of the best things my dad ever did for me was never talk to my coaches,
30:21
which sounds weird, because it's like that. Why did your dad not talk to your coaches? Your dad
30:26
root? It's like, no, there were a lot of guys on the teams that I played on whose dads were sponsors
30:31
of the team. And so there were players that weren't very good that were getting an odd amount of
30:35
playing time, like an oddly high amount of playing time. And I remember one time being so
30:40
frustrated at my level of playing time, specifically talking about baseball. And on my way home, I'm
30:45
like, dad, just, you know, why won't you do something? Like, I always see, you know, this guy, his dad's
30:50
talking to the coach, and then he gets more playing time. And, you know, all the stuff is like,
30:53
why won't you do anything? And my dad, who's not, you know, he wasn't big on nuggets of wisdom.
30:57
That wasn't really his style. He just said, son, when you earn the playing time, you'll know you
31:01
will have earned it. You know what I mean? Like, which that's just kind of like, all chucksy type
31:06
wisdom. But it's like, you will know that you deserve it at that point. And it's just like,
31:11
it wasn't handed to you because of something you didn't do. It was granted to you because you earned
31:16
it. And so I think that that's a very important thing as well. Even as we look at scripture, just,
31:21
that's a good little sidebar right there that if you're looking for a shortcut, same thing with
31:25
Bible study. Well, what's the shortcut to getting ready for the forging table? There really isn't
31:30
one. No, you can come here and fake it. But I tried it. No, they're really aren't shortcuts.
31:35
Like you have to spend the time in the words. So Ryan, I'm going to set you up for failure here
31:40
versus 12 through 17, because there's some names in here that are hard to pronounce. So I can't wait
31:44
for this. Oh, man, 20 seconds. 17. Okay. Now, when he, when he heard that, John,
31:50
no, I didn't think you would get hung up on he come on. Like I'm worried about.
31:54
I just know I was just like, want to make sure I was reading the right. You can reset. Ready
31:58
second. Yeah. Okay. Now, when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee
32:02
and leaving Nazareth. He went and lived in Capernaum. Capernaum. Capernaum. See, there we go. Sorry,
32:08
Joey. By this by the sea in the territory of Zebulun. Nailed it. And Naftali.
32:15
I said that. I just want to mess up. So that. So that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might
32:25
be fulfilled. The land of Zebulun and the land of Nathali, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan
32:31
Galilee of the Gentiles, the people dwelling in darkness have seen great light. For those dwelling
32:37
in the region and shadow of death, of them, a light has dawned. For that time, Jesus began to
32:44
preach saying, repent. The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Nailed it at the end. You really drove
32:50
at home there at the end. But she liked that. The significance he liked it. I can feel it in the
32:54
future whenever he's listening to this. But so this is the official beginning of Jesus's earthly
32:59
ministry. This is obviously a big deal. I may have made too much of this. So I just didn't know what
33:04
you guys had heard before. But obviously, we know that Jesus started his ministry at the age of 30.
33:10
Okay, not 21, not 50, 30. Have you all heard anyone talk about the significance of 30? Because
33:17
there have to be things that are in the Bible that are not super important to our overall
33:23
understanding of God. There are some there are details that are just details. But it's like
33:27
the age that the son of God started his ministry, maybe there's something significant there. But
33:33
I haven't heard of anything. Were you at ABF when we kind of went over this? No. Okay. So
33:37
otherwise, I wouldn't have said that in my introduction. I didn't know if you were setting
33:42
yourself up. I didn't want to steal a thunder. I can't remember the gentleman's name.
33:50
I think it might have been Tim Neff. I think it was Tim. Was it Tim? Okay. And he basically talked
33:57
about the rituals of Jewish kids and how they start to learn the scriptures and memorize
34:07
the scriptures. And then from there, depending on who the highest ones in the class were,
34:11
they would go along and go to the next step, which would be like a collegiate version
34:16
of Hebrew and the law in scripture. And then if they make it from that percentage, then they
34:23
would go to a rabbi and be under a rabbi for a certain amount of time. And that rabbi would like
34:29
teach them and they would be a part of that ministry. And then from there, the rabbi would
34:35
then go and they would go and then become a rabbi. And so usually by that time that they
34:42
become a rabbi and start their own ministry, it was around 30 years old. And so that's kind of
34:48
like the way that it worked, that they would move on and how you would become a Pharisee or
34:54
Pharisee, not a Sadducee, but become a Pharisee. You would become a teacher of the law and a
35:02
priest and a prophet. So you'd be a rabbi, a teacher. 30 years. I did not know that.
35:08
Yeah, it's usually around the 30 year mark. Like you're like under the tutelage of somebody
35:12
for like at least 10 years. And you follow them around in their ministry. And as they are a rabbi,
35:18
you're like, you're their understudy. And then finally, when you graduate from that,
35:22
that you move on to be your your own rabbi. And then you get an understudy base.
35:26
Yeah. And then you get an understudy, which 12 disciples. And I think Peter kind of took that role
35:32
for Christ. But yeah, basically you go and you find a bunch of followers and then they follow
35:37
you. And so Jesus kind of kept to that, that tradition. He had a totally different message
35:44
than what the rabbis were, but he knew scripture and he knew very well. Why? Because he wrote it.
35:50
Yeah. And I will add something here. I think the calling of Simon and Andrew and James and John
35:58
is such a good example of obedience. It's such a good example. Jesus comes to them. He doesn't
36:04
have an army, doesn't have a sword, no weapon, no backing of any religious leadership or governing
36:09
authorities. And just demands unqualified obedience just as follow me. And they do it.
36:16
They do it. And it should be like that for all of us. Jesus says, follow me.
36:21
When you go and read 18 through 22 to set that up. Yeah, I'll do that. While walking by the Sea of
36:26
Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter and Andrew, his brother casting a net into
36:31
the sea where they were fishermen. And he said to them, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
36:36
Immediately, they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there, he saw two other
36:42
brothers, James, the son of Zebedee and John, his brother, Zebedee. Sorry. Sorry who there it is.
36:47
I'm going to get all of you. I'm not there. Give you talk to more. It'd be messing up with
36:51
the guy in the boat with Zebedee, their father, mending their nets and he called them. Immediately,
36:56
they left the boat and their father and followed him. So again, many times as I was studying Matthew,
37:03
this time, things hit me that I just skipped over last time. There was one word repeated twice that
37:09
basically defines this whole section, which goes back to a point that you were just making Winkler
37:12
immediately. They left their nets and followed him. And then 21st, 22 immediately, they left the boat
37:18
and their father and followed him. So immediately is important. And the second one, they left the
37:24
boat and their father, like they left their father in their business. And again, as we read through
37:29
scripture, there's obviously more things that happen here. And if you watch, you know, the chosen,
37:33
like they obviously talked about this particular section and they kind of show it and there's,
37:37
you know, different details. But what type of overwhelmed this wasn't an overwhelming pitch.
37:43
He's just basically like, follow me now, make you fishers of men. They're like, okay. And then they
37:48
just do it like that. That's odd. If I think they already heard the message because some of the
37:53
commentary I was reading, Andrew already might have been a disciple of John the Baptist.
37:58
When I saw somewhere else, who was it? Where I think Simon and Andrew, they were also disciples
38:08
of Jesus at one point. Yeah, I was right at Peter, Peter and Andrew had followed Jesus previously,
38:13
but kind of in a part time basis. Yeah. So he was calling them to be, hey, don't be contract
38:18
employees of the discipleship now or whatever. It's like, hey, you're going to do this full time,
38:22
which is interesting. But still even that, it's like they were back fishing. And Jesus is like,
38:26
no, come let's like, let's do this for real. And they were like, yeah, immediately.
38:30
I mean, somebody comes up to you. I mean, I mean, you're already seeing the awe of the Messiah.
38:35
And he's like, come, let me we'll make fishers. I'll make you fishers of men. I mean, like,
38:39
who doesn't want to follow that? You know, I mean, I have some people that I work with and like,
38:44
hey, let's go and tear this up. And like, some of them I want to follow. And some of them are like,
38:48
yeah, no, you go do that, man. You know, but to go out on a limb with these guys, I mean,
38:53
they're giving up everything. They're giving up all that they have. They're like, these guys
38:59
just left their dad on a boat. Like, think about that, my dad's like, I'm helping my dad fish. And
39:03
then I'm like, later, dad, I'm going to go do this. One, my dad probably be upset. And two, you know,
39:08
I just gave up my whole life. I like the language. I'm sorry. Go ahead there.
39:13
I was going to say, and they're leaving knowing right before this, John the Baptist, he'd been
39:17
arrested. I mean, I don't know why he'd be arrested for the way he preaches, right?
39:22
Boldy, calm people, broods of vipers and stuff. Yeah. I mean, they can expect
39:27
this is probably going to happen to me as well. I think it's cool, too. I mean, it shows some
39:32
fortitude. And again, I can't think of the words I'm going for, but
39:37
end it. Go for it. Yeah, no, I love the expression. I'm sorry. Every time I read this, I love the
39:49
expression fishers of men. I love it so much. Greg Lori, the expression fishing for men is
39:56
an important one for us to understand. Another way to translate it, it would be catching men alive.
40:02
We find this phrase only two times in the Bible, first Matthew for 19, which is where we head here.
40:07
And then in 2 Timothy 2, 26, where it describes those who have been ensnared by Satan.
40:12
Thus scripture provides a striking contrast. Either we will catch men and women alive or the devil will.
40:20
I love it. I had I go on this fishing trip each year with the men in our Sunday school class and
40:30
the thing that, you know, I noticed the first time I went, I came back and I was very much changed
40:36
in the way that I approached everything. And, you know, they were talking about, like, we might
40:42
need to change the name because everybody just thinks, well, we're going fishing because,
40:46
ultimately, it's a trout fishing trip. And but other guys have started breaking off and they'll
40:51
play golf or they'll go hiking, they'll go biking, they go do all sorts of things down in broken
40:55
both. There's a lot to do down there. But I told them you can't change it because you are
41:01
literally fishing. You are fishing. You're just fishing for men. It's a different scenario. So,
41:07
it's not what you intended, but it's what's happening when I think that there's an important
41:13
lesson there as well that intentions matter, names matter, timing matters. There's so much
41:19
in the story like this, like I'm going to make you fishers of men. He's using using language
41:24
that they understand because fishing at this time was not an easy thing. Otherwise,
41:28
most of the people in that area would have just been fishing. This was a hard task. You had your
41:32
ups and downs. You had your good years and your bad years, your good seasons and your bad seasons.
41:35
But it's like if you're fishing for men, there's there's always going to be fish. There's always
41:40
going to be someone that needs to be caught. And he's saying that I will make you fishers of men.
41:46
He's like, I'm not going to just snap my fingers. And all of a sudden you are a fisher of men.
41:50
And again, he's calling them and then they're going to walk around with them for the next few
41:53
years. And he's going to make them into what he needs them to be after he's gone.
41:57
There was no shortcut in that. No shortcut at all.
42:00
No shortcut at all. It wouldn't have been a lot easier, Ryan.
42:02
Yeah. He just snapped his fingers and was like, boom, Fisher.
42:05
Y'all are super ready for all of this because they wouldn't have gotten that personal development.
42:09
I mean, you go read in Matthew when he's like talking with the disciples.
42:15
Like you can see some of the frustration when trying to explain things. You know, he's just like,
42:20
ah, man, you don't see it, do you? You know, that's the thing.
42:23
It's like, but how are they going to learn?
42:25
Yeah. And you don't just get wisdom. Yeah, you're not granted wisdom, I guess.
42:30
I found that like very humbling because there's many times with my kids, I'm like,
42:34
you don't get it, do you? You know, like what's going on here? And it's just like, you know what?
42:38
They don't. Why? Because they don't know. I can't snap my fingers and make them smart.
42:44
You know, I'm still trying it. And I'm just going to like, I'll keep reporting back on how that's
42:48
going. It won't work. And you know, but I have to remember, I have to look at how Christ was with
42:52
the disciples. Yeah, there might be a lovingly frustration about it, but there's, you know,
42:58
it's their learning and Christ knew that these guys were learning and he's just trying to teach
43:02
them and he's teaching them and they didn't take a shortcut. I mean, they followed this guy for
43:07
three years and they learned from him and even they even learned from him after his death.
43:13
You know, they were, you know, Peter was learning from Paul. Paul was learning from Peter.
43:17
So it's just an amazing thing to look at. I agree. Let's go and get into the last part here of Matthew
43:23
for Derek. If you will read 23 through 25, please. And he went throughout Galilee, all Galilee,
43:30
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every
43:34
disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria and they
43:40
brought it. They brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains,
43:45
those oppressed by demons, epileptics and paralytics. And he healed them. And great
43:51
crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and from Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the
43:58
Jordan. So the population of Galilee, around this time I saw a few hundred thousand, so maybe three
44:04
hundred thousand, about 200 different villages is where this measure is taking place. I thought
44:09
the John MacArthur commentary pointed this out. And I thought it was great that you can boil down
44:14
all of Jesus's ministry into a nutshell. Jesus did three things, teaching, preaching, healing.
44:21
That was what Jesus did on this planet. Okay. And everything that we see described red letters
44:27
are not is going to be in one of those three categories of teaching, preaching and healing.
44:31
Now, I don't necessarily this late in the podcast want to open up the gift of healing box. So let's
44:38
maybe stick with teaching and preaching for right now. Wait, wait, you're pointing at me. Do you want
44:42
to talk about healing? Well, no, I just think it's like that's the part of this that people are
44:46
going to look at. It's like, Oh, man, he healed people from all these diseases. Great thing. That's
44:50
awesome. But look at the stones that Christ had and the fact that he went into synagogues
44:56
and preached the gospel, you walked into synagogues and said, repent.
45:00
The end is near or the kingdom of the kingdom of God is near. That that's a lot. That's like us
45:09
walking into like a church that we know it's probably not a church that's really preaching
45:13
the gospel or, or biblically sound and saying, repent for the kingdom of God is near. Like,
45:19
that's huge. I mean, you could get killed. Probably even nowadays doing that, but back then they
45:26
could have definitely taken them out and stoned them. It takes them out. It takes some bravery to
45:30
actually go in and actually, you know, he's fishing for men, even then Jesus is. I mean,
45:35
and, you know, I do like the other idea here is like one of the first things that he's doing is
45:40
he's creating his own community with the disciples. I mean, that's one of the first things he does
45:44
when he starts his ministry. But, you know, I think the concept of, I mean, discipleship and
45:53
ministering, I mean, they're going, he's going to minister to these great crowds. He's got the
45:57
disciples with him. I like the idea that Jesus is not trying to limit it to four walls. I mean,
46:05
he's just out and he's doing these things. That's fishing. I read a quote. I can't remember,
46:13
don't know who said it, but asking are we keepers of the aquarium or are we fishers of men?
46:20
And I think especially the church going crowd, I think a lot of times we can fall into being
46:27
keepers of the aquarium. I like how you brought that up and that it's not in these four walls.
46:32
How many times do we sit in these four walls and we act like Christians and we do our
46:35
Christian, you know, we do what we do as Christians, but outside those four walls,
46:39
how do we let culture define us and how do we act with other people who aren't our Christian
46:45
brothers and sisters looking at us? And so I think it's a great thing to look at that. How
46:49
Christ did it within the four walls and did it outside the four walls.
46:52
Sorry, I'm frustrated that the camera has turned off for two times. So those you listening to this
46:58
on audio, you're like, what was that sound? That was a sound of me hating everything off in the
47:03
background because tech is so stupid. I don't even know what you just said because literally,
47:06
I just shorted out my brain, shorted out. I was like, did I say something? No, it wasn't you.
47:11
This time it wasn't you that said something that made me mad. I do. There's one other thing I think
47:17
I'd like to bring up here is, you know, Kyle, you kind of talked about talking to them in their
47:21
language. You know, he's talking to fishermen and he's talking to them about being fishers of men.
47:27
Whatever your profession, it can be a ministry. And to be honest with you, I mean, I'm a CPA.
47:34
I don't think I could go in and minister to an attorney effect, you know, and exceptionally well.
47:40
Or Derek, I probably couldn't talk to your pilot buddies and minister them as well as you could
47:45
because you have common interest. You have common knowledge. There's ways for us to do that. It's
47:50
not that it's impossible to do. But if you look at your workplace as your, this is a ministry,
47:56
and I have the ability to be a fisher of men right here where I'm at, because I already know these
48:04
people. I know what they're like. I'm one of them to an extent. But I don't think that, I mean, I
48:11
think one of the other fallacies is, I don't think that following Jesus necessarily is,
48:17
I have to abandon my jobs or my skills to the contrary. I think God gives us a lot of these
48:22
skills and abilities. So he reaches places that maybe pastors cannot. You know, I think there's,
48:30
you know, Marty Grubs, who's my pastor is probably not going to come to my office and start ministering
48:36
to people. Neither is Terry Fakes, as much as I as awesome as that would be. It's not going to happen.
48:43
And so it's my job. It's my responsibility to try and disciple to those people who are at my workplace.
48:51
I can't think of a better way to leave it mainly because I'm still mad about the camera. But guys,
48:55
if anybody would like to get a lot of pro bono work in on doing tech for the forging table,
49:00
that would be amazing because this happens literally every time we try to record the camera just keeps
49:05
turning off. Ryan, did you have something else you wanted to hit right before we went off? You had
49:08
some special stuff on your screen there. I was looking up a word because I was thinking of like
49:12
our sermon today at church. I was on the Good Samaritan and how, you know, Christ was walking into
49:19
synagogues and preaching a gospel, the gospel to people and how that's kind of like a I would say
49:27
not crazy, but I couldn't find the right word words. It's not crazy. It's just like,
49:31
I don't know, taboo or I can't think of the right word, but how he brought up in the Good Samaritan.
49:38
You know, he talks about the Levite and he talks about the priest and as he's talking to the
49:44
Jewish leaders and then he brings up, you know, a pastor pointed out, you know, the third guy comes
49:50
up, they're all thinking it's going to, oh, it's just going to be a Jewish layman and he just throws
49:53
out a Samaritan. I mean, like he's like, that's like in our time being like, yeah, a Nazi or something
49:58
like that. You know, like that was just like, you know, like, you know, like the last thing you
50:03
think he's going to bring up is a Samaritan and just just how he just knew how to talk to people
50:11
and how he knew how to explain the gospel in a way that was just, you know, like, I probably
50:18
want to said that that's not winsome. You know what I'm saying? And so it just made me think about
50:23
that when you read about him starting his ministry. It's interesting to use the word winsome. I'll
50:29
tell you off air. The audience is like, why is he going to tell him this off air? There's
50:32
something about the use of the word winsome. So just remind me as soon as we get done. But
50:35
guys, we're going to leave that there, but come back here next some next Sunday where we're going
50:38
to dig into Matthew five. And guys, like, I mean, everyone's looking at me crazy. And I mean,
50:43
the text I got from y'all this week was like, Hey, are we really only going to do an hour on
50:46
Matthew five guys? You could have a pastor spend his entire year just breaking down Matthew five,
50:52
which is really only the first part of the sermon on the mount. But we're going to get into the
50:55
sermon on the mount. I'm very, very excited about it. So make sure that you read through Matthew five
50:59
to get ready for next week. But before we let you go, we are going to do a quick resilience boost.
