This is Undaunted Life Man's Podcast, I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
0:57
Welcome back to the Forging Table, the mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push
1:00
back darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience.
1:04
At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:08
by digging into God's word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:11
us.
1:12
That's the Winkler.
1:13
This is the horn, but we got a new guy in our midst and he doesn't have a cool nickname
1:16
yet.
1:17
Guys, Derek Edwards, welcome to the Forging Table.
1:21
So here's the thing, here's the thing for those of you in the audience that don't know
1:25
this guy.
1:26
If I were to look at and describe the most outgoing, most talkative people on the planet,
1:34
one of the first people that would not come to mind is Derek Edwards because he's a very
1:38
quiet guy, he's a bit of a slow cooker, but the thing about Derek, and I'm going to speak
1:43
about him to his face and make it awkward for him, he was basically the first guy, whenever
1:48
I was looking for kind of an inner circle for the, for, you know, Undaunted Life, like before
1:53
Forging Table was even an idea, and I asked, I was thinking of couples that, you know,
1:59
I knew would be prayerful about what Undaunted Life was doing and that were sold out from
2:02
the mission.
2:03
I thought of you and your wife who we have not gotten permission to use her name, so you
2:06
can use your name if you want to.
2:07
I won't get in trouble, but so that's like a really cool thing that you, you've literally
2:12
been there from the beginning, but when we came up with the Forging Table idea, you know,
2:16
I was like, okay, who can we get on that's going to like really talk and make these big
2:19
bold points.
2:20
And you and I spoke and it's like, that's not really your wheelhouse.
2:22
You kind of like being behind the scenes.
2:24
But then as we've gotten the Forging Table going, as we've been doing stuff like that,
2:28
I was like, I really think that you would, you would do well on this.
2:33
And I think it would be good for you, good for the table.
2:35
And so I welcomed you to do this, you, you accepted and you're here.
2:39
You're not going to be doing it all the time.
2:41
But anyway, I just wanted to kind of like tee you up a little bit like, do you hate me
2:44
for asking you to do this?
2:45
Because now you're sitting here and having your face in a microphone, like, or is this
2:49
going to be okay?
2:50
I think we're going to make it.
2:51
Okay.
2:52
We're going to be here a little nervous, but yeah, it's going to be good.
2:54
Well, you should be nervous because if you make any mistakes, Joby is listening from
2:58
Florida as we speak.
2:59
And you know, we've got a sorry, Joby, you know, calendar or not calendar, I guess calendar
3:03
would be a better word.
3:05
But when it's anybody's first time on the Forging Table, they have to answer three questions.
3:09
I always like, forget my own questions, but let's see.
3:12
How did you become a Christian?
3:13
So quick description of that.
3:15
How do you like to study the Bible and then how does your brain work?
3:19
And so you have like two minutes to answer all three of those questions and you can't
3:22
forget any questions.
3:23
It's ready to go.
3:24
Yeah.
3:25
So I came to Christian when I was five.
3:27
We were in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma at the time.
3:30
I remember coming up from church one Sunday and just talking to dad and he's asking me
3:36
all the questions.
3:37
But yes, yes, that's what I believe I want to do it.
3:39
And then yeah, just there in the bedroom, I remember jumping on the bed like, yeah, let's
3:43
do it.
3:44
You know, five years old, you know, I think that's when, you know, the conversion was
3:49
actually five, you know, long process from there, but still working on it, obviously.
3:54
That's when I became a Christian.
3:58
How do I study the Bible?
4:00
I like to listen to the Bible more than anything, real audio and visual.
4:07
So when I read, I get distracted to go back and read several times.
4:12
So I can listen and listen and read at the same time, that seems to be the best for me.
4:15
Is there a particular audio you like or read or whatever?
4:19
Okay.
4:20
James Earl Jones.
4:21
James.
4:22
Johnny Cash.
4:23
There are options.
4:24
Maybe Paul washer.
4:25
He puts me to sleep.
4:26
Paul washer.
4:27
Yeah.
4:28
Yeah.
4:29
Yeah.
4:30
So that was kind of the, I like to read and stay the Bible and then obviously just digging
4:34
into some of my favorite guys that are preaching and stuff like that.
4:38
So.
4:39
Okay.
4:40
And so how did your brain work?
4:41
Uh, slow, uh, really slow, uh, for the most part.
4:44
Um, yeah, I like to, like we said, you asked me a question.
4:49
I'm probably not going to give an answer right away.
4:51
Right.
4:52
Um, so yeah.
4:53
To this day, you've never answered any of my questions.
4:54
I've asked you questions for years and I still am waiting on answers.
4:57
Hey, I'm here.
4:58
Well, but wait a second.
4:59
The interesting thing about it is your pilot, like that's your profession.
5:02
So the slow, like I don't know anything about flying, but I, except for I don't want to crash
5:08
in an airplane crash.
5:09
So that's where I get all my fast processing.
5:11
Okay.
5:12
When we're flying.
5:13
All right.
5:14
And a lot of that scripted, you know, it's, uh, it's the same thing or same process for
5:17
the most part.
5:18
And as long as we don't get any, you know, red flashing lights, it's kind of goes away.
5:23
It's supposed to go when you do get a red flashing light.
5:26
That's when you got to, you know, think a little quicker.
5:28
So how often do you get red flashing lights?
5:30
Not very.
5:31
Okay.
5:32
Awesome.
5:33
So like, is there like a cool almost died story?
5:34
No.
5:35
Okay.
5:36
Could you make one up?
5:37
We got stripped by light now the other day or a few months ago.
5:38
So that was kind of cool.
5:39
Got struck by lightning.
5:40
The plane.
5:41
Yeah.
5:42
I guess I did not.
5:43
Okay.
5:44
I'm like, literally sitting here.
5:45
Like, Oh, is there any cool storage?
5:46
And you're like, no, we did get struck by lightning.
5:47
Like that's, you do realize that we didn't get a red flashing light or anything, but
5:52
you got struck by lightning.
5:53
Like Thor hit you.
5:54
Like what?
5:55
What exactly?
5:56
Okay.
5:57
She's getting special powers.
5:58
No, I was hoping special powers would come, but no, uh, unfortunately, struck by lightning.
6:04
Okay.
6:05
Well, very good.
6:06
Well, and before we, we dig in, you asked me right before I hit the record button, which
6:09
by the way, right before I hit the record button, this guy had to take a big drink out
6:13
of his big, you know, loud cup.
6:14
You had to cough farted.
6:15
Like it was just like, you know, if I hit the record button, like all that's going to
6:19
be on there.
6:20
So there's a masculine symphony.
6:21
Yeah.
6:22
Now, I've made you wait.
6:23
What exactly did you want to talk to me about?
6:25
It's your, it was your birthday couple of months ago.
6:27
Yeah.
6:28
And I got you something.
6:29
Okay.
6:30
I want to wait to give it to you right now.
6:31
Is it?
6:32
Is it underwear?
6:33
It's not.
6:34
Okay.
6:35
Here we go.
6:37
I can only guess.
6:39
Oh, oh, please be what I think this is.
6:41
Oh, okay.
6:42
It has words on it.
6:43
So, so there I was on my way to kill Christians when I use my free will to become one.
6:51
Wow.
6:52
Look at that.
6:53
Oh, and it's, would you imagine the name of the company is Reformed Sage.
6:57
So there you go.
6:58
You get, you get a shout out Reformed Sage.
7:01
Do I need to put this on?
7:03
You could wear it in between.
7:09
Oh, and some stickers.
7:11
Oh, yeah.
7:12
And we got stickers.
7:13
Yeah.
7:14
What stickers for your truck stage.
7:15
Tell us die.
7:16
Okay.
7:17
There we go.
7:18
I actually know what that means.
7:19
But we don't have to talk about.
7:20
Well, I would say thank you, but I don't appreciate this gift.
7:21
I'm not a little bit, but I'm going to toss it over there and we'll pretend for later.
7:25
Well, thank you.
7:26
I was really hoping you were going to pull out of cubs hat and I was just so joy.
7:30
Why would you even mention the cubs hat?
7:33
Okay.
7:34
For everyone else.
7:35
I'm getting that for his kids.
7:36
Guys, you realize there are people here for the Bible study portion, but the last time
7:38
now I will give Mr. Winkler a break because he had about 17 minutes notice before he came
7:43
in and filled in last time because somebody got sick, but he walks into my house wearing
7:48
a Chicago Cubs hat.
7:49
And I didn't know if this was like a joke, was this a setup from the beginning?
7:52
Was this guy actually sick?
7:54
Did they send this guy into my house wearing this nonsense?
7:56
So he asked me this time.
7:57
And so we have a neutral, just state of Florida hat going on right now.
8:01
It's not Florida Marlins, even if it was my Marlins, like it's not even that big a deal.
8:04
They're not even Florida Marlins, Miami Marlins, but that doesn't matter because we're digging
8:08
in to Matthew three today.
8:09
So guys, we're really in the thick of the gospels now.
8:13
The interesting thing about Matthew three is this is about, I don't know, like 20, 25
8:19
years after the end of Matthew two.
8:22
So there is a big gap.
8:23
And as I was preparing for this and looking, it's like, okay, you know, Jesus's public
8:28
ministry was three years worth of public ministry, but mostly the gospels only cover the second
8:33
and third year.
8:34
And really, John's the only one that deals with much of kind of that first year.
8:37
So there's really a large gap here as we get into Matthew three.
8:42
But this is where John the Baptist comes onto the scene.
8:46
And you know, this is, this is a wild man who's, you know, baptizing people and basically
8:51
calling people out like a prophet would.
8:54
But the, the interesting thing about this is before Jesus could start his earthly ministry,
9:00
he had to be baptized and he had to be tested.
9:03
And so we'll get to the testing here in a little bit, but for anyone who wants to hop
9:07
in on the whole baptism part, I know that there's a whole lot that can be said really
9:11
about the entire book of Matthew.
9:12
So let's just, let's just dive in on the baptism of Jesus and John the Baptist.
9:16
I think I want to go a little bit before then.
9:18
I'm sorry.
9:19
When he talks about repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, you know, John's already
9:24
talking about repentance, you know, Christ will talk about repentance, but John's even
9:28
bringing that out repent, change your mind for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
9:34
And so I thought that was a pretty amazing thing to look at that he's calling people
9:37
to repentance no longer with salvation, but measured by deeds.
9:43
So no longer were they measured by their deeds.
9:45
Now it's being saved, you know, it's, it's coming to who the Isaiah 40 would call the
9:51
Messiah.
9:52
And in Isaiah 40 actually talks about John the Baptist as the voice of one crying in
9:57
the wilderness to prepare a way for the Lord, it makes his path straight.
9:59
So I think it's really great that chapter three starts out with repentance.
10:04
I think the other thing I'd like to point out is pay attention to what they're saying
10:10
about how John is dressed, what he is eating and where he is.
10:17
John's appearance and diet have essentially, I mean, he's rejected the luxuries of life.
10:23
He's wearing garments and eating the diet of a poor person and John is exempt.
10:29
He's exemplifying the idea of I am clearing the way to make the path straight for the Lord.
10:37
He's removing these obstacles from his life that might get a, got, might get in the way
10:41
of the kingdom of heaven.
10:43
And I think as I was reading through this, I was going, okay, well, taking inventory
10:49
of my life, like what's in the way?
10:52
What's in the way of my, like the Lord coming to me and making sure that that path is straight
10:58
so that I can follow him.
11:00
Well, let's, let's actually back up a little bit.
11:03
So this will be to both the all's points.
11:05
And so, so Derek, you started going to church early on.
11:10
I guess for me, I didn't really even hear the word repentance until I was like a teenager.
11:15
And so I thought repentance meant saying, sorry, really forcefully, like I'm going to, I'm
11:20
so, I'm not just sorry, I'm so sorry.
11:23
But obviously pretty well, it's been a Christian for any length of time.
11:26
It means like a complete 180, you're turning away from your old self.
11:30
But like, I guess, you know, repenting is turning away saying, sorry, like you can be
11:36
sorrowful and depressed, but not repentant.
11:39
What is kind of y'all's understanding or how is your understanding of repentance evolved
11:43
over time?
11:45
Because even to this day when I'm like, Oh man, I need to repent of that.
11:48
I'm thinking in terms of saying sorry.
11:50
And so I'm still kind of working on it.
11:52
I see we were coming from with that.
11:53
I kind of mixed repentance with conviction whenever I felt convicted on a certain way
11:58
that I acted, I felt like I had to like, Oh, I'm sorry, God, like that was repentance.
12:01
But no repentance for me has changed over time is that it kind of comes from the Greek
12:05
word menetonia, which means to change to change your mind.
12:10
Is that we're just going to drop Greek words out of that or later, oh, you were going to
12:14
say that there was going to say, but did I pronounce that right, Joby, you're not here.
12:18
So we're just going to say, yes, anyway, sorry, that's the point.
12:21
I mess up going.
12:22
You're all good.
12:23
So it's it's a change of mind.
12:25
It's, you know, this is my former life.
12:27
This is how I lived before Christ.
12:30
And now I'm changing my mind and I'm changing that I need Christ.
12:33
I need him to live the way that I need to live on top of.
12:38
I can't do everything.
12:39
I'm not going to be able to create perfection.
12:42
My perfection isn't in my deeds.
12:44
My perfection is in Christ alone.
12:46
And for me to change my mind on knowing that it's not about me and it's not me that's
12:50
going to do it, that is what the gospel is trying to bring about.
12:54
That's what Christ came to this world about.
12:56
So repentance is saying, all right, I know that my former life was this.
13:00
But now I know I'm going to lead this life.
13:02
I'm changing my mind and I'm going to lead my life this way.
13:06
So the born and raised Catholic me is going to say like, I agree with everything you said
13:12
and I'm going to add on one other thing.
13:14
There's confession of sin.
13:16
It's confession.
13:18
I think to like a little guy in a box or to I think confession sends to one another.
13:24
Uniblical, I think not necessarily to the guy in the box, but you know, the accountability
13:30
group that you might have, you should be confessing to one another.
13:33
You should be confessing that sin to God.
13:35
He already knows about it.
13:36
You might as well give it to him.
13:39
But the idea that I've always looked at confessing sin as something that if you truly want to
13:45
abandon that sin and turn away from it, confess it.
13:48
Tell someone about it though, A, they will help you hold accountable.
13:53
But B, it's a very, very humbling experience to confess something that you go, hey, I am
14:00
a Christian.
14:02
This is what I believe and I broke God's will for me.
14:08
I did not follow Christ in this moment.
14:12
That accountability and that humility I think is extremely helpful if you were truly going
14:16
to be repentant and follow Christ.
14:18
I agree with you.
14:19
I think if we go about that way, it kind of comes to a legalistic type of atmosphere.
14:24
I think as a true Christian for me, when I repent, I need to repent to brothers from
14:30
that conviction.
14:31
But if we're talking about, you know, I'm talking to somebody who's a new Christian
14:35
and I say repent and believe, you know, I want them to repent from their past and what that
14:39
oldness was and then believe and then future repentance, I wouldn't really call it repentance.
14:44
I would call it more of a, what do I want to call it?
14:49
There's a word that I use, a sanctification.
14:52
I would say me going to a brother because, you know, hey, Kyle, I need to talk to you.
14:56
I spanked my kid too hard or I yelled at my wife.
14:59
I've sinned in this certain way.
15:01
That's more of a sanctification, even though I'm repenting through that action.
15:05
But I think repentance is a good thing and to talk about your sins when you're coming
15:09
to Christ and saying, hey, I'm changing my mind on how I live my life.
15:14
If I live my life this way, I was endopronography.
15:17
I was, you know, I treated my wife horribly.
15:19
I was an alcoholic.
15:20
I was objectified women, you know, those are things that I want to point out that I'm going
15:26
to run a repent of because God has changed me and I'm taking a 180.
15:30
So we're about 15 minutes in and Derek, you have yet to give any commentary.
15:35
So I know you're a crock pop, but we're just going to throw you into the cast iron skillet
15:39
right now.
15:40
Ready set talk.
15:41
I'm more on the Ryan side with the repentance and sanctification side there.
15:46
Things that spoke to me in that first little bit was pretty interesting.
15:50
John the Baptist later in Matthew is described as being the greatest man I've ever lived,
15:56
which I never really understood that I guess, but I think it's pretty cool that John the
16:02
Baptist who Jesus says it's the greatest man I've ever lived is the one being the herald
16:08
did tell that the king is coming repent.
16:12
So that was pretty cool.
16:15
John the Baptist Christ herald and then I had another point and I forgot it.
16:19
That's okay.
16:20
We'll hop in because this is how it works, but okay.
16:23
So all of y'all are bringing up something and I just, I can't get this out of my brain.
16:26
And so I just want to discuss it with you because it really bothered me this morning in our
16:31
little Sunday school class and it's because, you know, our Sunday school has been around
16:36
for four years and we have couples that have been in there from the beginning for how long
16:41
has our new Sunday school been around three, four years, maybe longer.
16:46
I've been in three.
16:47
So you've been in three.
16:48
So let's just say four years.
16:49
I'm the newest.
16:50
And so we do, we do prayer requests at our tables where you can kind of say, you know,
16:56
what you need prayer for, like, Oh, I'm about to have surgery or Hey, you know, but my family
16:59
member has cancer, whatever you want to put down and there's praises as well.
17:02
And that's all typed up and, you know, emailed out to everybody and so for the fervent or
17:07
even mediocre prayers in the group, that's really helpful.
17:11
But I had this thought when I was in there this morning that we never get any real prayer
17:18
requests for us that are relational.
17:21
So like before my surgery, it was like, Hey, I'm about to have my throat cut and a bunch
17:25
of crap thrown in there and I could lose my career.
17:28
So yeah, everyone was down to pray for that.
17:30
But I've yet to see somebody write down on that prayer request.
17:33
I've sinned against my spouse.
17:36
I've, you know, so I'm taking it the confession way.
17:40
I've sinned against my spouse or my spouse and I are at each other's throats right now.
17:44
And like our marriage is on the rocks and it hit me like a ton of bricks this morning
17:49
where I was like, there's a couple that could not just leave this group.
17:52
They could lose their marriage and no one in this fricking room would know about it.
17:57
And part of it is because typically when a marriage falls apart, there's sin that needs
18:00
to be confessed that has gone unconfessed, whether it's a sexual nature or an emotional
18:04
nature or financial nature, there's there's something there.
18:08
But I was just like that we didn't have and I'm not just picking on my group like this.
18:12
You could go to any Sunday school in America and have it have it be that way where we're
18:17
so put together when we walk in the door and our kids look like they're not insane.
18:22
And we look like we love each other, but then we walk into that room and it's just fake
18:26
because unless we are in that one Sunday school in America that has 25 couples that are all
18:33
crushing it, like just super duper in love romantically all the different agape is like
18:38
every kind of love there is.
18:40
And so I wonder if this confession part I know where we're kind of getting out of Matthew
18:44
three I do want to come back, but I just want to kind of bring that up as like just kind
18:47
of a real moment and like almost a wake up call for everybody to where it's like if you
18:51
confess your sins to one another, that would be the people that are like in that Sunday
18:56
school type of environment.
18:58
And like anyway, I don't even have a point I don't even have a question there aside from
19:03
like just bringing that to everyone's attention, including ours here at the table.
19:08
I was going to say I think to me this I mean those signs of repentance, it's confession
19:13
of sin.
19:14
It's prayers of remorse and it's abandonment of the sin, but I put confession of sin first.
19:19
I mean, how can I actually turn away from it if I'm not even willing to confess it?
19:23
And there's so many sins that we commit not just with our spouse, but also just the, you
19:28
know, so many like what we would, I mean, Jerry Bridge is called them respectable sins.
19:33
You know, those things that we got so comfortable doing over time, you know, I'm a I'm a sinful
19:41
overeater, I eat way too much food.
19:44
That is a sin.
19:45
It is, I'm gorging myself that is sinful.
19:48
How often if I confess that, how often am I actually taking accountability for that?
19:53
But to that point, I think if I'm ever going to actually have a true heart change and turn
19:58
away from things, I need to confess those sins and they need to be I mean, my wife hears
20:04
my sins, my accountability group hears my sins.
20:08
And the only reason that I would not want to do that to me is just I'm sending one more
20:14
time because I've got pride in the way of actually confessing that sin.
20:18
Pride is always the thing that sets us towards that trajectory.
20:22
Kyle, from what you're coming from in regards to, you know, you know, us doing that in a
20:28
prayer request or something like that, I think we we got to look at community.
20:32
I mean, we have a community group.
20:34
Maybe that's something that we should feel open to do.
20:37
I know my wife would kill me if I was like, I'll put like, hey, you know, pray for Rachel
20:43
and I, I would go through a tough time or something like that.
20:45
But there's people in our group, you're one of them, you know, that I would come to if
20:49
I'm having a really tough time and like, I would have a community of guys that I trust
20:54
that I would get around and talk to rather than go and talk to a therapist first, you
20:57
know, I think having that is important, you know, hearing from the guys that you trust
21:02
and and agree with not necessarily agree with you on everything, but you know, are following,
21:08
you know, following the, a biblical pattern of what fatherhood and what being a husband's
21:13
about.
21:14
So I'd like to see us get more open on that.
21:17
I don't know.
21:18
We're such a large group.
21:19
I there's there's going to be some awkwardy some some awkwardness to it, but I mean, getting
21:25
there might be a beautiful thing.
21:27
So I guess it's obviously I agree with you.
21:31
You're going to go to the people in the group that you trust people that aren't going to
21:35
take advantage of the things that you're confessing to them.
21:39
But even people that are not close to you, just just imagining, I guess, in my head,
21:43
like if there was a couple in there that was literally on the ropes and then all of a sudden
21:48
there's 25 couples that are now going to advocate for you in your marriage that are
21:54
maybe before the marriage is, you know, not enough time, like, away from the kids.
21:59
And now you have 25 couples that are maybe like, Hey, I'm not going to ask you, I'm telling
22:03
you, bring your kids over Thursday night, drop them off.
22:05
Y'all are going on a date or like now you have at least a percentage of those couples
22:10
that are now praying for you and that are kind of checking in on you and so I can see
22:15
it both ways where you want there to be that community there, but then so that's more like
22:20
the sniper rifle approach, but like the shotgun approach is like, Hey, we're just getting
22:24
a bunch of people that are just going to randomly love on these people because that's way better
22:29
than Oh, yeah, you know, we're getting a divorce and there's nothing y'all can do about it
22:32
now because then you're going to have 25 couples that are like, I would have done something
22:36
I wish, you know, we would have paid for this, we would have done that, you know, that type
22:39
of thing.
22:40
You have to know though, we had it, we went to a church, Rachel and I and it was really
22:45
built on marriage, but it was just a facade.
22:47
And then we come to find out we had like four people in our church, four couples get a divorce.
22:52
And Rachel and I, you know, we had our we had our problems went to a weekend to remember
22:56
which was a great thing.
22:57
And it's just like, man, if I would have known those people, I wasn't super close to some
23:00
of them, but I knew them, I was like, I would have paid the 600 bucks to send them pay for
23:06
their date and hotel just for them to get the idea of marriage that we learned from
23:10
this to hopefully save their marriage.
23:13
Like I've sent relatives to this thing when they're going through tough times and and
23:18
I think it's but we have to know, like if you don't know, then you don't, you can't do
23:22
anything.
23:23
So that goes back to your point, Winkler, where it's like, do you like when people use
23:26
your last name?
23:27
It just appeared.
23:28
Okay.
23:29
As long as it's not captain weekend, okay, I don't know why that's gross.
23:36
Okay, we're, I can't edit that out either because once I hit the record button, it stays
23:40
in.
23:41
But anyway, just wanted to kind of say a family program.
23:43
I'm sorry.
23:44
No, it's not.
23:45
It's a man's podcast.
23:46
Like we've already broken so many barriers on this.
23:48
All right.
23:49
So that was our detour.
23:50
I'm going to come back.
23:51
Um, so to the point you were making earlier Winkler about, you know, this guy, obviously
23:55
a wild man, he's got these crazy garments, his hair is all over the place, just a disheveled
23:59
wild dude, dude, the locus and the honey.
24:02
But then verse seven reading from the ESV, but when he saw many of the Pharisees and
24:07
Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, you brood of vipers who warned you
24:12
to flee from the wrath to come bear fruit and keeping with repentance and do not presume
24:17
and say to yourselves, we have Abraham as our father for I tell you, God is able from
24:21
these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
24:24
Even now the acts is laid to the roots of the tree.
24:27
The tree there for that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
24:31
Okay.
24:32
So rough dude, and it says rough things.
24:35
That was a straight up diss.
24:37
Right.
24:38
I mean, that was a diss track that was a, that was a like a couple thousand year old diss
24:40
track.
24:41
Yeah.
24:42
The thing about it is, and we see other places, you know, when we talk about, you know, the
24:46
light wash tombs and how the Pharisees and Sadducees were very, and almost goes back
24:52
to what you just said, Ryan, about the church that is the marriage church.
24:55
To me, it makes perfect sense that four, four marriages failed because you can't have a
25:00
failing marriage at the marriage church.
25:01
Yeah.
25:02
Right.
25:03
Imagine not liking the worship song at the worship church.
25:05
Yeah.
25:06
Right.
25:07
You know, it's like that's, that doesn't make sense.
25:08
We're the worship church.
25:09
We got to be handsy.
25:10
We, you know, not handsy, like in the Bill Hybels kind of a way, but like hands in like
25:13
the hands up.
25:14
The raise the roof way.
25:15
All right.
25:16
The raise the roof way.
25:17
Um, but like, like, just imagine in this particular setup, like he's telling the batches is calling
25:23
them right out.
25:25
And I got to tell you, it's going to seem like a shock to all of you.
25:28
I am so sick and tired of Christians that are not saying the thing that needs to be said,
25:33
because they're afraid it's going to come off as harsh.
25:35
Now, there is a line where you're being needlessly harsh.
25:40
I think this was in Luke 11 where it's, um, you know, Jesus was talking about what, you
25:44
know, don't basically, don't call people you fools.
25:46
Like don't call people names that it's like needless harshness, but Jesus used the same
25:51
type of language that John the Baptist use here at several points during his ministry.
25:56
He had people in his own hometown that tried to kill him for words that he said, right?
26:00
Like they, they walked him out to a cliff pretty much.
26:03
And he just said, not play.
26:04
And he just walked right in between him and, you know, went on living.
26:08
But I guess for me, this isn't like licensed to me to talk like a jerk, but at the same
26:13
time, it's like when the occasion calls for it and you're, you're almost needlessly too
26:18
nice.
26:19
I don't think that's right either.
26:20
I think the every time I read, uh, what Jesus is saying it, typically he likes to start
26:27
off by saying, I am telling you the truth.
26:30
And I feel like we just kind of gloss over that.
26:32
But like imagine if you added some emphasis to what he's saying, I am telling you the
26:36
truth.
26:38
I am.
26:39
I think Jesus was just was harsh.
26:41
Yeah.
26:42
I mean, you, you have to be, if you're telling people the truth, when they've been living
26:45
out of life, how can you do anything but be truthful and they are not going to want to
26:49
hear it?
26:50
The truth can be harsh.
26:52
It's tough to hear.
26:54
So I completely agree with you, Kyle.
26:56
I don't know why we would be so soft.
26:57
So it's funny.
26:58
I'm reminded of a bill bird joke.
26:59
Yeah.
27:00
Sorry, guys.
27:01
I want to go.
27:02
He was funny.
27:03
And he was talking about, I won't say the joke, but he was talking about how if something
27:06
is red monotone, it's not going to seem the same as it happened in real life.
27:10
So imagine if, you know, we, because when we read the Bible, we're like, you brood of vipers,
27:15
who warned you to flee from the rat to come bear fruit and keeping with repentance.
27:19
Like that's not how he said it, right?
27:22
And the first time that kind of blew up for me was reading a beautiful outlaw by John Eldridge,
27:26
because he was trying to bring out the personality of Jesus.
27:29
Because like we read the scriptures and we just read it like Jesus was, you know, this
27:32
holy robot.
27:33
And it's like, no, like, again, imagine the tone you would have to use for somebody to
27:39
want to hit, they hate you so much, not just because of the contents of your words, but
27:43
how you said them.
27:44
I think that's important to keep in mind.
27:47
Just to make you talk, Derek, I'm going to make you read versus 11 and 12.
27:51
So ready set.
27:52
Talk again.
27:53
11, I baptized you with water from repentance, but he who was coming after me is mightier
27:58
than I who sandals I'm not worthy to carry.
28:00
He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire.
28:03
His win-win fork is in his hands and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat
28:07
into the barn, but the chaffy will burn with unquenchable fire from the ESV.
28:12
Yeah.
28:13
So he is everybody is V right now.
28:14
Okay.
28:15
It's V and as be.
28:16
All right.
28:17
That's how I roll.
28:18
Overachiever.
28:19
So again, even as you read it, if I'd read it out loud, when Claire read it, if Ryan read
28:24
it, we would all read it that same way.
28:26
I would have read it that way.
28:27
What are you?
28:28
Okay.
28:29
Don't get out of here.
28:30
Like you almost made me throw the Bible.
28:31
Come on, Ryan, but like the level of fire that he probably said that with is fairly
28:37
substantive, but the one thing I want to point out before we get to the actual baptism of
28:41
Jesus is John the Baptist, wild man, unkempt, you know, saying these crazy things.
28:49
Very humble as well because we can see that when he's talking about the one that is to
28:55
come who will be Jesus, who sandals I'm not worthy to carry.
28:59
And I don't get the sense that that's very false humility because everybody knows that
29:04
guy that is desperately trying to seem humble, but isn't like he is a type of guy that will
29:09
say something like, yeah, I'm like the most humble person.
29:12
I know.
29:13
Like that's the, that's the thing they will like constantly be patting themselves on the
29:15
back when it comes to their own humility.
29:18
But even in the middle of dropping this gauntlet, this diss track, like he is so humble because
29:25
he knows you get the sense he knows he's important.
29:28
He knows he's the trailblazer, but he knows the person that's coming after him.
29:32
Like dude, people aren't going to remember my name because I can't even carry this dude's
29:36
sandals.
29:37
He believes what he's saying.
29:38
He believes what he believes, you know, this isn't like, hey, I'm just going to talk
29:42
about this, you know, like, I kind of think this is going to happen.
29:46
No, he actually, that's why he says it with fervent fire.
29:50
I think it's, it's great when you look at this as it is a straight up diss track to the
29:55
Pharisees and Sadducees because when he says flee from the wrath to come, like they thought
30:00
in their minds that only non-Jews were going to take on the wrath of God.
30:05
So all Jews weren't going to take on wrath.
30:07
And then he goes on even further to talk about, you know, cut down the, cut down and
30:12
thrown into fire.
30:13
He's saying judgment is here.
30:16
Judgment is coming and that judgment is coming through Christ and which he goes into about
30:19
baptism.
30:20
So there's three types of baptism.
30:22
There's water, which is repentance and purification and cleansing.
30:26
Holy spirit, baptism.
30:27
All believers in Christ are spirit or receive the Holy spirit during baptism and then fire
30:33
throughout the context and meaning of judgment.
30:36
So at some point, you know, at the, and when everything's said and done, we're going to
30:40
come down to a final judgment where you'll be thrown into the lake of fire if you don't
30:44
believe.
30:45
And so he's just showing all of this right now and, and just really he's preaching to
30:51
these people, but he's preaching to the Pharisees and Sadducees right now.
30:55
So I think it's a, if you kind of look at the context of everything, it's, it's pretty,
30:59
pretty amazing.
31:00
What he's doing is pretty ballsy.
31:03
What he's doing right now.
31:04
I mean, that's like us like walking into, I don't know, like some church that we know
31:09
is portraying a false gospel and just going in there and just saying, well, where are
31:14
we going with this?
31:15
Yeah.
31:16
And calling those leaders out.
31:17
It's surprising to me that even there is a camera where it was, it's like a day's journey
31:22
from Jerusalem out to where he's baptizing these guys.
31:25
There had to be, you know, some, I don't know, spies excitement out there.
31:31
And they're like, what are we missing out on?
31:34
So Sadducees, a kind of deniers of the supernatural kind of political opportunists, like, let's
31:41
get out there and it's not compromise.
31:44
Help me out here.
31:47
They're trying, I know exactly what you're trying to say and it's lost me as well.
31:51
Like they're basically trying to needle at it, like kind of cut out the foundations of
31:55
this movement.
31:56
Yeah.
31:57
Yeah.
31:58
How can we capitalize on this?
31:59
Right.
32:00
Right.
32:01
It's a, I mean, they're their leader.
32:02
I mean, both the Sadducees and the Pharisees that were both there.
32:03
I mean, they're, they were the leadership at the time.
32:07
And if you have somebody who's challenging your authority as a leader, what you're going
32:13
to do is you're going to either try and ingratiate yourselves with them to make them part of your
32:18
movement.
32:19
So they're coming out to see, like, what is John saying?
32:22
What's he doing?
32:23
He's got this big following.
32:24
How can we make sure that these followers don't go with him or can, so can we incorporate
32:29
him into our message or can we find, can we find fault in this prophetic figure?
32:37
And as you said, needle at him, tear it apart, say this is, you know, heresy and, and then
32:44
essentially separate the crowd from him.
32:47
Well, you can use them either way because you can either use them as a, you know, something
32:52
to attack or if they're, you could use him, like, as you were kind of saying, like, maybe
32:57
he's good at getting crowds and you suck at getting crowds.
32:59
So let's use Jesus.
33:00
He's going to get more crowds so we can serve our purposes.
33:03
And so either way, because you have to get the sense that because it's kind of weird
33:07
if we think about it.
33:08
Why?
33:09
Because again, all it says is that, but when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees
33:14
coming to his baptism, that's all we get in terms of a setup.
33:17
And then he screams, you brood of vipers.
33:20
It's like, dang, John, like, chill out.
33:22
What is wrong with you?
33:23
Because he knows they're coming with false presences.
33:25
Right.
33:26
Right.
33:27
So you have to know that he knew that that was coming and he's just like, nah, you're
33:29
not going to do that here.
33:30
I even like the fact that he calls them vipers.
33:32
I mean, an animal that is known for a subtle approach and then it's going to attack hard.
33:39
But also, I mean, draws back to the original serpent.
33:44
Right.
33:45
Yeah.
33:46
I mean, they're filling lights.
33:47
I mean, if we look at the Pharisees during this time, I mean, they're adding to the law.
33:49
They're making it more unattainable than it already is.
33:52
But then they're acting like they're attaining it, you know, so he just calls them out on
33:56
every level.
33:57
But you talked about the humility of John when he talks about, I'm not even able to
34:01
hold this guy's sandals.
34:03
Well, and he keeps the humility going.
34:05
So Winkler, if you can actually read 13 through 17, that wraps up Matthew three.
34:09
Sure.
34:10
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.
34:16
John would have prevented him saying, I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me?
34:23
But Jesus answered him, let it be so now for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.
34:30
Then he consented and when Jesus was baptized immediately, he went up from the water and
34:34
behold, the heavens were open to him and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove
34:39
and coming to rest on him.
34:41
Behold, a voice from heaven said, this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased.
34:47
So Ryan, this just continue your point here because we have back in verse 11, the humility
34:52
that he's not worthy to carry his sandals.
34:54
But then we get verse 14 where he's basically telling Jesus like, look, man, like this is
34:59
really awkward.
35:00
I'm almost like, dude, I'm not doing this.
35:02
Yeah.
35:03
Like I'm not going to baptize you.
35:04
What are you talking about?
35:05
Well, he's humbling himself.
35:06
Like, what, you should be baptizing me.
35:09
Have you ever had a moment like that where somebody like asked you to do something and
35:12
you're like, no, like I needed, I was like thinking through this because I was trying
35:16
again, I'm not, if the Bible's not about us, but I was just trying to think in my own life,
35:20
like whenever I humbled myself before someone, but it was so awkward because it was so clear
35:25
that the roles needed to be reversed.
35:27
I couldn't like think of one, but it's just almost like, look, man, you need to be the
35:31
one doing this.
35:32
Like this, this doesn't make any sense.
35:34
I wish I, I wish I could think of something like that.
35:35
That's why it's table.
35:36
There's four of us.
35:37
Literally every time I'm asked to be on the podcast.
35:38
Hey.
35:39
There we go.
35:40
Very humbled.
35:41
Were you going to say the same thing?
35:43
Yeah.
35:44
I mean, part of the training we went through, I get to follow some like guys, top gun instructors
35:49
and stuff like that.
35:50
And you go through and they're like, all right, I'm a student today.
35:52
They're playing this dumb, like little student and you're trying to like present yourself.
35:56
And you're like, I'm the dumb student.
35:57
This sucks.
35:58
Yeah.
35:59
You're trying to present yourself confident in this guy.
36:00
You know, you know, this guy over here is like done everything and he's like, awesome at
36:05
everything.
36:06
You're trying to teach him to do.
36:07
So it's super awkward and it's super uncomfortable because you're like, I'm not doing this right.
36:11
I know this guy knows what he's doing, but so what did you learn from that experience
36:16
though?
36:17
Because that's a great example.
36:19
I mean, I mean, most of those guys are super humble, begin with, that's how they got where
36:24
they are.
36:25
And he's there.
36:26
He wants, he wants to teach me basically.
36:29
So I mean, I guess I'm trying to learn humility from those guys that, I don't know the words
36:35
to say that either.
36:37
You know, I'm starting to absorb that ability to where it's like actually literally yours.
36:43
Yeah, you don't realize you're actually in a class for humility at that point, right?
36:47
Right.
36:48
Well, so I guess I even thought of one like because I've been asked to do like some jujitsu
36:53
teaching when there are higher belts in the room and it's like, no, I'm not, I'm not doing
36:58
that.
36:59
And they're just like, yeah, yeah, you are like, let's see how you do it.
37:01
And yeah, you're nervous because you're like, if I say something dumb, they're not going
37:06
to call me out in front of everybody because I would be embarrassing that like, but you
37:09
almost want them to.
37:11
But then it's like you, you elevate yourself to a new level naturally because of who's
37:17
watching, right?
37:18
So if you're teaching a kid's class in jujitsu, it's like, dude, you could use made up words
37:22
and like tell them all the wrong things.
37:24
They're dumb.
37:25
They're kids.
37:26
But when you're teaching other adults and you want them to, to get better and you want
37:29
them to, to continue to evolve in their game, it's kind of the same thing.
37:32
But it's weird, Winkler, that you, you were talking kind of about the podcast because the
37:37
guy that introduced you to us in this table is Matt Grassmeyer, who's one of my oldest
37:41
friends and he's, but he says the same thing when he talks to me about, about this show.
37:45
He's just like, I'm, cause from my perspective, I'm like, I'm so glad he keeps saying yes.
37:50
And then he's like, I'm so glad Kyle keeps asking me and I've heard you say the same
37:54
thing.
37:55
Ryan.
37:56
And I've heard other guys say that.
37:57
It's just, it's weird to me.
37:58
To hear that.
37:59
Yeah.
38:00
Yeah.
38:01
No, I mean, it's definitely the way I feel.
38:02
I mean, I did it the first time and I was going, well, that'll probably be the last time
38:07
that happens.
38:08
We were desperate.
38:09
That's what you're about.
38:10
I don't know.
38:11
It's fair.
38:12
I agree.
38:13
I mean, I feel that way when it comes to this, I'm like, who am I?
38:14
I mean, I don't know the scriptures that well.
38:16
I mean, I just, I like to read, I like to dive into who God is and I like to learn.
38:22
I mean, I'm not really passionate about learning certain new things all the time.
38:26
I mean, but I'm passionate about scripture.
38:28
I'm passionate about knowing the God I serve and I just think it's being able to do something
38:34
like this is, you know, we're not, we're not Jobe Martin's here, you know, we're not
38:38
Paul washers.
38:39
We're just a bunch of dudes just reading Matthew and just talking to each other about
38:45
it.
38:46
But Ryan, that that's actually the point because from the beginning, I was like, what, what
38:50
would it look like if for laymen that aren't professional Christians got around the table
38:55
and just made mistakes, but we're just fervently digging into the scriptures, because here's
39:01
my hope.
39:02
And I've said this before.
39:04
I was like, you should always look at who you were five years ago and be somewhat embarrassed.
39:09
Right?
39:10
Wait, I thought that I dressed that way.
39:12
Like I voted for that person.
39:14
Like whatever the thing is, it's like, but if you look back on who you were five years
39:18
ago and think, yeah, all good.
39:21
It's like, how much improving have you done over the last half, half, since it's three,
39:26
half decade?
39:27
Like how much improvement has actually gone on?
39:28
Could you look back on your old self and you're like, yeah, that dude is killing it.
39:31
That dude's crushing.
39:32
I wish I could go back.
39:33
I never want to look at who I was five years ago and think I want to go back to where that
39:37
guy was that level of maturity, that level of understanding.
39:41
And that's what birthed the forging table because I was like, I think that I took a
39:46
guess, right? and then I confirmed it through some of you guys and then has since been even
39:50
further confirmed.
39:51
I got the sense that there are a lot of guys not reading the Bible because they thought
39:55
if I don't have time to study it, then I don't even need to read it or I go to church and
39:58
my pastor can read it for me, right?
40:00
And he would never lie.
40:02
And you know, who am I to, you know, fact check the pastor, right?
40:05
And I was just like, there are guys given a lot of time to to fancy sports and Netflix
40:10
and video games and reading other books and even other types of education, but they're
40:14
not digging into the scripture.
40:15
And if you don't come to the scripture with humility, like that's going to be a problem
40:21
as well.
40:22
And so like if you come to the scripture thinking, I already know this, but here we go, Matthew
40:26
three, bro, like, as I've read Matthew three before, but whenever I was reading it last
40:31
week and this week, it's like, okay, like the last time I read this, I didn't have this
40:37
depth of understanding.
40:38
Well, I mean, it's the same thing I go and my thing when I'm trying to do this is I'll
40:42
read it first, make the notes I want to make and then I'll go back and look at the commentary,
40:47
you know, of people that I trust to be like, am I on the right track is the Holy Spirit?
40:52
You know, I'm not trying to fact check the Holy Spirit, but I just want to make sure
40:55
I'm not putting my own, you know, I sogetical view into what the scripture is and you said
41:01
something that don't or who might have fact check the pastor fact check your pastor, right?
41:07
I will.
41:08
I will tell you that don't don't unloveingly do it and try to be on them all the time.
41:12
But in today's modern age of, of, of church, you should know what the Bible says.
41:18
You should, you should be able to read it.
41:20
So you not only are you fact checking your pastor, but you know what's being said is,
41:24
is the right biblical thing.
41:27
That's actually a favor to your pastor.
41:29
Yeah.
41:30
Because if your pastor knows that there are men, I'm specifically speaking to the men
41:35
now that are reading the scripture along with him and, you know, trying to expos it and
41:40
execute it and they're digging in, that's going to make sure that you keep your standard
41:44
tie as well.
41:45
Because they're like, these guys are going to check me if I've done something wrong.
41:47
I remember for me, and I know I've talked about live church and Craig Rochael in here
41:50
a lot.
41:51
I remember the first time when I thought that then the kind of the foundations of my, you
41:56
know, membership there, even though they don't have membership began to crumble is because
41:59
Craig said something in church and I was like, wait, that's not what that means.
42:02
Like, it was one of those things for a guy that wasn't really studying the Bible.
42:05
He said something that was so egregiously wrong that I was like, wait a minute.
42:09
And then I started thinking like, what else in that sermon was wrong?
42:13
Was just kind of made up for the sake of his TED talk, you know, and then it was like,
42:17
what about the last year?
42:18
What about the last 10 years that I've been here?
42:19
Have I just been like this idiot, just like accepting all this because I just assumed
42:24
well, he went to seminary.
42:25
So who am I to challenge?
42:27
We actually had that same issue, like our pastor was preaching stuff and I was like,
42:32
this doesn't make sense.
42:33
Like, biblically, it doesn't make sense.
42:35
And remember talking to my wife about it, she's like, he's our pastor.
42:37
We need to submit.
42:38
And I'm like, will you once you say that to me?
42:40
I'm like, what?
42:41
I don't submit to nobody but God, you know.
42:44
And so I just throw your wife under the bus in front of the entire audience.
42:49
She's show show.
42:50
She listened to the show.
42:51
This isn't our testimony.
42:52
No, she doesn't listen to the show.
42:54
Good thing.
42:55
She'd never become a back homie.
42:56
Oh, yeah.
42:57
Well, it's called for giving it over.
42:59
So didn't we talk about this back in Nehemiah when I quoted Nehemiah and got in trouble?
43:02
Nope.
43:03
Never talked about it.
43:04
I never happened.
43:05
No, but I mean, we had to start looking at scripture and she agreed, you know, like,
43:10
oh, I see where you're coming from.
43:12
And so, you know, you can go and talk to the pastor about it and your pastor is either
43:17
going to dig into that scripture with you.
43:19
And that's the sign of a good pastor trying to teach you and trying to shepherd you.
43:23
The sign of a bad pastor is the one that tells you, you know what, if you don't agree
43:26
with that, that's on you, then maybe this isn't the place for you or that's the time
43:29
to run.
43:30
Derek, I think one of the things that you mentioned, like when you talked about like how you learn
43:35
the best and kind of reading and listening at the same time, that's something I think
43:42
I struggled with the first time I went through the Bible because I read it and I just read
43:46
it the whole way through and I was like, you know, I'll do that.
43:49
And I'm not digging into it.
43:51
I'm just reading it, cover to cover.
43:54
And I look back at that year and it's like, did you really read it?
43:59
Like I don't think that you really got much out of it.
44:01
I think so much, I mean, I say this, I think I said it up last time I was here.
44:06
The Bible was an intimidating book.
44:08
There's so much to it.
44:10
There's so many.
44:12
There's so much to read.
44:14
There's a ton of volume here.
44:15
It's printed on really thin pages in columns in tiny font.
44:20
There it just seems so intimidating to get into it until you actually start looking and
44:25
going, all right, let me chop this up.
44:27
Let me focus and let me look at these chapter by chapter and try and link things in.
44:32
When I think the other thing is, well, like I thought about this the other day, I had
44:36
this thought of, okay, how did I get to where I am today, interjects or the shape that you're
44:42
in?
44:43
It certainly wasn't all at once.
44:45
It was like one day and then the next day and then you did it again the next day and then
44:49
you took a day off and then you hit it again and then you hit it again.
44:52
And then you look back and it's decades of dedication to the same thing.
44:56
Like can you imagine if flight school was an hour long?
44:58
Right.
44:59
You know what I mean?
45:00
Like that would kind of be obnoxious.
45:01
So it's like, you know, planes would literally be flying and falling out of the sky and hitting
45:05
little old ladies walking their dogs.
45:07
But before we put a bow on Matthew three, I didn't want to bring up one more thing that
45:11
was subtle and I don't know if anyone else caught it or if I'm just dumb and I should
45:14
have caught this the first time I read it.
45:16
But I have heard a lot of debates specifically between Muslims and Christians where and even
45:23
Christians and Christians were like, hey, the Trinity, the word Trinity doesn't even
45:26
show up in the New Testament.
45:28
Trinity is not like a thing.
45:30
Like y'all are making this up.
45:31
You're trying to make father some Holy Spirit a thing.
45:33
But if we go to verses 16 and 17, okay?
45:36
So when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water and behold, the heavens
45:41
were opened him and he saw the spirit of God.
45:44
That's a Holy Spirit descending like a dove and coming to rest on him and behold a voice
45:49
from heaven said, this is my who speaking and my that's the father, beloved son, their
45:56
son with whom I am well pleased.
45:59
So in a couple of scriptures, you have father, son, Holy Spirit.
46:02
Now is the word Trinity here?
46:04
No.
46:05
But that's the same thing like when Carl Lynch back in the day said, you know what?
46:08
Jesus never even used the word homosexuality.
46:11
So I'm not going to talk about it from the pulpit.
46:13
It's like dummy, he did use the Galilean ancient Aramaic word for Porneo, which is how it was
46:19
written down in the Greek, which is all sexual immorality, which would have included homosexuality.
46:24
You don't.
46:25
And so I think that that's an important thing that that's not even necessarily the point
46:30
of this chunk of scripture here.
46:32
It's to show that Jesus really even humbled himself to be baptized by a sinner, right?
46:38
But I mean, even right there, you have the Trinity, which I thought that was important.
46:42
100% agree.
46:43
I mean, if you look at it, you know, if we go back to John and John baptizing him and him
46:47
being humbled enough to ask, you know, John to baptize him, John doesn't want to do it.
46:51
Why?
46:52
Because he knows he knows he's sinless.
46:53
He doesn't need to be baptized.
46:55
He doesn't need to repent.
46:56
He is who we need to repent to.
46:58
And so I agree 100% that that has to do with the Trinity.
47:01
I mean, you have Christ, the sinless sacrifice right there, and then you have the dove, which
47:07
is the Holy Spirit, and then you have God actually speaking to the people there at that
47:14
time.
47:15
It's totally the Trinity.
47:16
You don't need to call it anything but the Trinity.
47:18
Well, and I want to the dove is to call back to Noah.
47:23
Yeah.
47:24
I mean, it's a call back to Noah.
47:25
You're going, okay, Holy Spirit's descending on him like a dove, a dove that signified
47:32
the end of God's judgment at the end of Noah.
47:37
I love it.
47:38
Sorry.
47:39
Just have to link that up.
47:40
I was like, that's just beautiful.
47:41
You know what's interesting about that?
47:42
This, I don't want to go on too much of a tangent here at the very, very end, but Satan
47:46
is obviously the father of lies, and he's the great deceiver, and we'll see that certainly
47:50
when we get into Matthew four.
47:53
But I never noticed this until recently, but do y'all know how many colors there are
47:57
in the rainbow?
47:58
Seven.
47:59
Seven.
48:00
Roy G. Biv.
48:01
So red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo, violet, wait, I left a green.
48:07
Okay.
48:08
So Roy G. Biv.
48:09
Anyway, you got it.
48:10
So do you know how many stripes there are on the pride flag?
48:12
Six.
48:13
Six.
48:14
But when you look at the pride flag, it looks like a normal rainbow, but it's not there
48:17
are six colors instead of seven.
48:20
So I don't know if there's a corollary for the dove.
48:22
Like what is, what is Satan's dove in this particular setup?
48:26
Because when I see a rainbow now, I'll see a rainbow in church and be like, I'm at an
48:32
apostate church.
48:33
And I'm like, no, no, it's actually at the end of the rainbow is like a boat with a
48:37
bunch of animals in it.
48:38
We're in a kid's section that's teaching the Bible literally.
48:42
And but now it's like that that symbol has been co-opted, but it hasn't because it's
48:46
not actually the symbol.
48:48
And so you have to think about like in our everyday life, like what is that dove that,
48:53
you know, Satan is potentially using because the dove should symbolize part of the promise,
48:57
you know, from Noah, the dove should should symbolize the Holy Spirit coming down.
49:01
Like anyway, that's just something to kind of think through and think about that.
49:05
And we'll certainly get more into this into Matthew four next week, but Satan will use
49:09
everything at his disposal, including scripture to try and mess you up and get you off the
49:15
track towards God.
49:16
But guys will have to leave it there.
49:17
But come back here next Sunday where we will actually dig into Matthew four and not just
49:21
set it up the whole time.
49:22
But Derek Edwards, you made it made it.
49:23
That is your first recording.
49:24
Congratulations.
49:25
How awkward was it?
49:26
Was it terrible?
49:27
It was great.
49:28
Okay.
49:29
We got through.
49:30
Matthew four.
49:31
So you can be prepared for next week.
