This is Undaunted Life Man's Podcast.
1:21
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
1:23
Let's get into it.
1:25
Welcome back to the Forging Table.
1:26
The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:29
forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience.
1:32
At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys foraging spiritual resilience
1:35
by digging into God's Word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:38
us.
1:39
That's Derek.
1:40
That's Eric.
1:41
That's Robert.
1:42
And here's the thing on this one.
1:43
I normally try to do some funnies and try to make, you know, have a little bit of levity
1:45
here at the beginning, but there is way too much ground to cover.
1:48
You guys already knew that if you're read up through Matthew 26, so we're just going
1:51
to launch right in today.
1:52
So Robert, if you will do Matthew 26, read verses one through five, please.
1:56
When Jesus had finished all these things, saying he said to his disciples, you know
2:00
that after two days, the Passover is coming and the Son of Man will be delivered up to
2:05
be crucified in the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace
2:09
of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus
2:14
by stealth and kill him.
2:16
But they said not during the feast, lest there be a uproar among the people.
2:21
So real quick, just a quick note on Caiaphas that I read in the John MacArthur commentary
2:24
that he served in his role from about 18 AD to 36 AD.
2:30
And so his long tenure in that position, which apparently had a decent amount of turnover
2:35
implies that he had very close ties, bull to Rome and to Herod.
2:38
So I thought that was an interesting historical point.
2:40
But the one thing I wanted to point out here and again, we got a lot of ground to cover.
2:43
So we can't chill here very long.
2:45
Verse two, you know, you know that after two days, the Passover is coming and the Son
2:48
of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.
2:51
He tells him this again.
2:52
This is the fourth time we see in Matthew that he has predicted his death and his and
2:58
crucifixion.
2:59
And yet the apostles were still in shock.
3:02
The disciples were still in shock when it happened again.
3:05
I don't want to hover over the apostles and be like, well, if I was back then I wouldn't
3:09
be so stupid because I would have been probably dumber.
3:11
I am literally Peter in most areas of life and I don't mean that in a good way.
3:16
But like they missed it.
3:18
I just don't understand how they missed it.
3:20
In retrospect, hearing all the stories, I mean, how many times have we've read through the
3:23
gospels and you're like, how in the world did you not know what was happening?
3:28
I mean, it just it amazes me sometimes.
3:31
But just like it.
3:32
I mean, if I was there, I'm sure I would have been just as oblivious and going, well,
3:35
that's another parable.
3:36
Right.
3:37
Exactly.
3:38
You know, it's a.
3:39
Maybe we should ask him to explain that one.
3:40
Yeah.
3:41
Remember the last time.
3:42
Literally.
3:43
I'm going to die.
3:44
And raise from the deck.
3:45
That's it.
3:46
I that actually is a pretty decent explanation because I've tried to put myself in their shoes.
3:52
And if it's like, I don't know if someone was like, Hey, I'm going to go punch that
3:55
dude across the street in the face.
3:57
And then a couple weeks later, dad, that dude across the street, I'm going to smoke
4:00
him right in the face.
4:01
And then you do that two more times and then you watch your buddy walk across the street
4:04
and smoke that dude in the face.
4:05
And if you react with, Oh my gosh, I can't believe he did that.
4:10
It's like you can't believe it.
4:12
You would have to suspend belief to believe that your friend would do what he said he was
4:16
going to do.
4:17
And I guess the other thing that makes this hard for me is crucifixion was was the worst,
4:23
the worst possible death, the worst possible humiliation, the only dignity that they afforded
4:29
to Jews was that they wouldn't crucify them completely naked.
4:33
They would allow them to cover their private parts.
4:36
And so it's like, man, so if someone said crucifixion back in that day and they said
4:40
that's going to happen to me, that wouldn't be just like a passing statement.
4:43
I mean, think about it though, if you were a disciple at that time, how many times did
4:48
you feel stupid around Jesus?
4:50
I mean, how many times was he talking and you didn't have any idea what he was talking
4:54
about?
4:55
And then later on, you were like, Oh, yeah, I was the stupid one that said, I wanted to
4:59
be the greatest and I got reamed for it.
5:01
Yeah.
5:02
To the point that I probably would have been not not completely silenced, but I probably
5:06
wouldn't ask as many stupid questions.
5:08
That's good.
5:09
That's really funny.
5:10
That's a good point as well.
5:11
Not to the chosen, but there are several scenes in the chosen where they have Jesus saying
5:15
this thing and he's saying it and there's a little bit of music in the background and
5:18
then the music stops.
5:19
Camera goes to the disciples and it's a bunch of blank stares and they just kind of start
5:23
looking at each other and I'm like, yes, yes, that's exactly how it was because they had
5:28
no clue.
5:29
But again, if you read the Bibles, if there is no personality, any of that in there, you're
5:33
going to miss all that entirely.
5:34
But we got to move on here.
5:35
So let's get to the story of Jesus being anointed at Bethany.
5:39
So Eric, if you will read six through 13, please, sure.
5:43
Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him
5:47
with an alabaster flask of inexpensive ointment and poured it.
5:52
She poured it on his head and as he reclined at the table, and when the disciples saw it,
5:56
they were indignant saying why this waste for this could have been sold for a large sum
6:01
and given to the poor.
6:02
But Jesus aware of this said to them, why do you trouble the woman?
6:06
For she has done a beautiful thing to me.
6:08
For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me in pouring this
6:13
ointment on my body.
6:14
She has done it to prepare me for burial.
6:17
Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she
6:22
has done will also be told in memory of her.
6:26
So this is Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus.
6:30
This is a similar act that we see described in Luke seven, but the timing applies that
6:34
this was a different occasion that he got this.
6:37
And I read a bunch of different commentaries about this to where some people will essentially
6:41
know when I read thought that she did this on purpose to anoint his body for burial,
6:47
that she didn't do that knowingly.
6:48
She didn't knowingly get that ointment and think, I'm going to go ahead and get him ready
6:51
because he's going to stinketh after they put him in the tomb.
6:54
Like I don't think that they they thought that, but she just did it.
6:58
There was something in here in her the Holy Spirit, perhaps I was kind of pushing her and moving
7:01
her to do that.
7:02
There's some fulfillment of prophecy in there, but I mean, what she did is she broke, you
7:07
know, a jar of ointment that was a year's salary, essentially.
7:12
So guys think about whatever your salary is or whatever the generic salary average salary
7:16
is.
7:17
And you know, country like America, that's what she did to to anoint him.
7:21
And a few ways we can talk about this, but I'll just kind of go with go off the fly here.
7:28
I would have been right there with the apostles being like, what is this dumb woman doing?
7:32
Like she she obviously didn't buy that because she just broke it like it was nothing.
7:37
But it's just like the posture of the apostles.
7:40
That was like a disappointed laugh.
7:41
Like that would be a laugh that you would give your son when he said something so ratchet
7:44
and stupid air.
7:45
Oh, I know I disappoint you, dad.
7:48
But like that's that's the thing that I again, I don't ever want to put myself above and hover
7:53
above the apostles because I feel like I would have been that person as well because these
7:56
guys were in a business mindset because, you know, people lose sight that their ministry
8:00
costs money like they had to pay for places to stay sometimes had to pay for food a lot
8:04
of times and they raised money and did business deals to keep their ministry going for three
8:08
years.
8:09
And so this is almost a continuation of that mindset and they missed the whole point of
8:13
what happened here.
8:14
Yeah, and it looks like in in John 12, Judas was the one that was the most indignant and
8:21
it makes me wonder if that was kind of like the straw that broke the candles back kind
8:24
of thing.
8:25
That's a good point.
8:26
Like, look, that that's it can't this is I can't, this is too much to lavish, right?
8:32
You know that we're doing here, this is this we were on a shoestring budget.
8:35
That could have carried us for how many months with how many people a year maybe that could
8:40
have got us and you just wasted that by putting it on your feet.
8:43
I didn't realize that women were that that perfume around their neck on the Sabbath.
8:47
So that would have been something she potentially was wearing.
8:51
Maybe she wasn't.
8:52
But that was something that I think that was traditional and she may have even just done
8:55
it on a whim where she was just over so overcome by the presence of Jesus, which haven't we
9:00
all kind of been there at least at some point in our lives where we were just so overcome
9:03
by the presence of Jesus that we did things that, you know, when we were more sober minded,
9:08
I guess you could say where we maybe potentially wouldn't do something like that.
9:12
But that's obviously very important.
9:13
One quick thing before we move on to verse 14, I wanted to point out again that stack of
9:17
lovely books there at the end of the table.
9:18
We have partnered with Crossway for those of you that want to start your own forging table.
9:22
So that is the forging table starter set.
9:24
It's got a men's Bible.
9:25
It's got a scripture journal there, the book of Romans.
9:28
It's got a devotional.
9:29
It's got a book about the different types of writing in the Bible and then also a great
9:32
book for men that want to be family shepherds.
9:34
There's a three step process.
9:35
It's here in the show notes about how you can get that at 50% off.
9:38
So go to the show notes.
9:39
If you want to get that set of books, that amazing set of books for 50% off.
9:43
But now we need to get into a furtherance of the story of Judas as you were just talking
9:47
about Eric.
9:48
If you can read verses 14 through 16 as we get into this betrayal, then one of the 12
9:55
whose name was Judas, a scariot went to the chief priest and said, what will you give
9:59
me if I deliver him over to you?
10:01
And they paid him 30 pieces of silver.
10:04
And from that moment, he sought an opportunity to betray him.
10:07
I have several questions here.
10:08
We can't camp on all of them for too long.
10:11
But here's my first question about this very, very short section of scripture.
10:15
Is did Judas willingly do this or was he predestined to?
10:18
Cool.
10:19
Man.
10:20
Yeah, because I wrote that down on my notes and immediately went, I need to scratch that
10:24
out.
10:25
I don't want to, I don't want to deal with that one.
10:26
But no, let's deal with it.
10:27
Let's.
10:28
Well, here, here, there are several theories as to what, what he was doing and why, what
10:32
his motive was.
10:33
And the one that I thought was interesting is maybe he wanted to force Jesus into the
10:36
conquering Messiah.
10:38
He, he, he, he, he, maybe, I'm sure they all were looking, of course, for the conquering
10:43
Messiah.
10:44
He was just not, it was not getting to that point quick enough for him.
10:48
And so if, I wonder if not, if he wasn't trying to force the issue on that, in essence, he
10:55
wanted to force God into his will, rather than to put himself into God's will.
11:00
Or in that same vein, if they wanted, if he wanted to remove him because they saw how
11:05
many people were following, you know, they wanted a militant Messiah, that's who they
11:11
were praying for.
11:12
You know, and when they found out for sure, he is not the militant Messiah and everybody
11:18
is believing that he is the Messiah.
11:21
And so I need to remove him so that they aren't swayed and yet another fraction doctrine.
11:28
And our people divided even more.
11:30
And if I remove him, then it'll allow for when the militant Messiah does come, we can
11:35
be more unified.
11:36
Yeah.
11:37
And I'm going to answer your question with the best information that I have.
11:41
I would just think of him as Pharaoh, and I feel like God hardened his heart at that
11:46
moment to do the thing that he had planned for him to do.
11:49
So yeah, I would, again, that gets into that great Charles, Charles Spurgeon quill, which
11:55
has been read on this podcast several times about that, that tension between free will
12:01
and God sovereignty.
12:03
And you know, I think if someone says he willingly did it, it's like, yes, or he was predestined
12:08
to do it.
12:09
And it's like, yes, also.
12:10
It almost feels like one of those things.
12:11
And I think you kind of brought that up.
12:13
One thing that I did find interesting, and I had never heard this before, 30 pieces of
12:17
silver is the same penalty from the Old Testament when an ox gourd a servant to death, the penalty
12:23
that was paid.
12:24
That's excess 2132.
12:25
The penalty paid was 30 pieces of silver.
12:28
I thought that that was interesting.
12:29
But then also that was roughly the same price as a slave would have cost during that time
12:34
period.
12:35
So I thought that was very interesting because he almost like knowingly became a slave to
12:40
his personal desires, to who he thought Jesus might have been to the Sanhedrin, like he
12:45
became a slave in that moment.
12:47
Last question on this section that I just want to kind of throw out to the table is did Jesus
12:51
or did Judas rather ever believe in Jesus?
12:56
Did he ever actually believe in Jesus?
12:58
Did he lose his faith?
13:00
This gets into that.
13:01
Hey, are you once saved?
13:02
Can an elect lose his salvation?
13:06
Can someone believe in Jesus and then fall away?
13:09
Can they deconstruct?
13:10
Can they just become an apostate?
13:12
Is that even possible?
13:14
Did Judas ever actually believe in Jesus?
13:18
Great question.
13:19
Hard for me to know.
13:20
Go ahead, Derek.
13:21
I find it hard to believe that Judas would have left everything in order to follow Jesus
13:32
unless he himself at the moment felt it, that he was worthy of following and then seeing
13:37
the miracles that were done reaffirming through his eyes how many miracles that we don't know
13:44
about, just the ones that were listed that we do.
13:48
How could he have not in some way?
13:50
Yeah.
13:51
I mean, I'm just sitting here trying to write like who, where was he in the order of the
13:54
number of disciples that were called was he 10th, 11th, 12th?
13:59
He potentially go, well, man, there's a following kind of ruin here.
14:04
Maybe there's an opportunity here.
14:05
If he's going to be the Messiah, the Concrete King, maybe I can get in his court, make some
14:10
money.
14:11
I literally wrote down opportunist whenever before you got to saying that because I'm sensitive
14:16
to your argument, Robert, but in my head, I think to myself like he proves himself to
14:21
be an opportunist.
14:22
He proves himself to think that perhaps the chips are down and he's like, dude, I can
14:27
feel the pressure of Rome and the Sanhedrin crushing down on us right now.
14:33
I got to get my gold parachute or silver parachute as it were.
14:37
And maybe this is my time and it's like, hey, you know, I love Jesus.
14:42
I love these other disciples and all that, but it's probably a better chance that they're
14:47
just going to kill them and that he's not going to overtake Rome because maybe he just
14:50
did an evaluation, like a coach's evaluation, like we do not have the personnel to win this
14:54
football game now.
14:55
Like we're just, we're down by too much and we don't have enough talent on the bench.
14:59
Like it's, what was it?
15:01
I don't know if it's John Calparia, Pat Riley, which where it's like, hey, look, look at
15:04
the doors of the locker room.
15:05
There's not another team coming in here.
15:07
That's going to save you guys.
15:08
It's just y'all.
15:09
And so maybe he was just doing an evaluation thinking to himself like, this is it.
15:13
Like I got to get out now.
15:14
Yep.
15:15
Yeah.
15:16
Hard to know.
15:17
But that that seems plausible.
15:18
It really does.
15:19
Yeah.
15:20
All right.
15:21
Next section here.
15:22
Let's keep this moving.
15:23
Passover with the disciples.
15:24
Robert 17 through 25.
15:27
Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus saying, where will
15:30
you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?
15:34
He said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him, the teacher says, my time
15:38
is at hand.
15:39
I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.
15:43
And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and they prepared the Passover.
15:47
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the 12.
15:50
And as they were eating, he said, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.
15:54
And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him, one after another, is it I, Lord?
16:01
He answered, he who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me.
16:06
The son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the son of man
16:11
is betrayed.
16:13
It would have been better for that man if he had not yet been born.
16:17
Judas who had betrayed him answered, is it I, Rabbi?
16:21
He said to him, you have said so.
16:24
Just an unbelievably dramatic moment.
16:29
Again, I encourage you guys stop reading the Bible.
16:33
Like these are robots.
16:34
Stop reading it like a robot yourself.
16:37
Is it I, Rabbi?
16:38
He said to him, you have said so and moving on with your life.
16:41
No, can you imagine the drama like, so if you read verse 21 again, that's, and, you know,
16:46
truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.
16:49
Can you imagine the pit in Judas's stomach?
16:53
Because in that exact moment, he knew it was him.
16:57
They're like, he wasn't thinking to himself, Oh, I wonder who could it be like everyone
17:01
else was wondering, and I bet you he was playing along.
17:05
I bet you was like, Oh gosh, what a shocking statement to have heard for the first time
17:09
ever.
17:10
Like the pit, because I don't know about you guys.
17:14
Maybe I'll have the same, you know, ginger, you know, inner consciousness me where you
17:17
just get nervous about, you know, I saw, I literally saw the principle of my kid's school
17:22
in my Sunday school class today, and I immediately thought, what did my son do?
17:26
He's three.
17:27
He's three years old.
17:28
He didn't try to set the place on fire, but that's immediately where my head went.
17:30
Like, she can't be here because she wants to worship Christ and be in our group.
17:34
It's because my son's in trouble.
17:36
So I just, I remember this, these feelings of dread and doom and having those several
17:41
times in my life.
17:43
And I feel like I could combine all of those together and put them into one emotion and
17:46
it wouldn't have been anything close to a Judas felt in that moment since I'm possible.
17:50
Yeah.
17:51
You know, about 20 years ago, for about 10 years.
17:57
So from 10 to 20 years ago, we were in Southeast Kansas.
18:01
We've been here in Oklahoma City about 10 years.
18:03
And when I was there, I played Jesus in a cantata play that was done about once every
18:11
two years.
18:12
So it was like five times over 10 years, I played Jesus.
18:17
And I mean, so it was very well known production in that area.
18:20
It was a massive undertaking.
18:22
We practiced for like five months to prepare.
18:25
I mean, I would say the majority of the local communities in the cities that were 15 miles
18:31
away and whatnot, they all came.
18:33
Did you grow your hair out real long?
18:34
And long long long long.
18:35
It was Fro, man.
18:36
I'm telling you.
18:37
We had pictures.
18:38
It was the, it was the turn the head and your hair follows.
18:40
It was kind of one of those man.
18:42
It was flowing, flowing locks.
18:44
But beard was just, I mean, it was banging, but it was way down there.
18:48
Because I would grow it out for an entire year, which is the reason why I've always
18:51
just kept it sense.
18:52
You know, my kids just got used to it.
18:54
And so I always had to grow it out for the next play.
18:55
It took so long to be able to get everything where it needed to be.
18:57
Anyways, as soon as I start moving into this portion, the betrayal leading into the garden,
19:03
leading into the torture, the crucifixion, man, it just takes me back.
19:08
It takes me back to what would be the equivalent of five months, five times, all of those times
19:13
of trying to just do the best I could to show the strength of Jesus, the resolve of Jesus,
19:21
the emotion that he went through during that time, but doing it for so many years of embodying
19:27
that.
19:28
So anyways, it's kind of off the tail end, but that's just where my mind is right now.
19:30
Well, there's so much heightened emotion here because this is the night before the crucifixion.
19:33
Yeah.
19:34
You lose that when you read, like a lot of people read where they read once and then they pick
19:38
it up in a day or two or a week or two or a month or two or a decade or two.
19:42
Like you kind of lose the fact that no, no, no, in a few hours, things are going to start
19:47
falling apart for Jesus in terms of his personal safety.
19:49
Yeah.
19:50
Yeah.
19:51
And this is the second time I meant to mention earlier, but this is just as good earlier
19:55
when we were reading and the priest, the high priest was like, Hey, let's not kill him during
19:59
the feast.
20:00
That might be an uproar.
20:02
And then down here when Jesus says, Yeah, you said so, this is, it's, it's you.
20:08
We see that Jesus is 100% in control of this entire situation because they don't want to
20:14
kill him on that day, but he gets killed on that day because that's why he wanted it.
20:18
He knew who was going to betray him before you betrayed him and he was going to call him
20:22
out for it.
20:24
And I think it continues on.
20:25
I mean, as we, when he says, Peter, Hey, you're going to deny me.
20:29
It happens.
20:30
You know, he was in complete and utter control when he says, it's my time.
20:34
The time is near.
20:35
Let's do it.
20:36
It's because he knew.
20:38
So I mean, just the sovereignty of the moment, there was nothing that was ever out.
20:44
That was chaotic on Jesus and he was never got off guard.
20:47
It was all happening exactly the way it was planned out and the way it was supposed to
20:51
be.
20:52
Yeah.
20:53
I never noticed this before reading prior, but it's like this clandestine like spot.
20:58
He's got this Passover going to and reading the note.
21:04
Uh, he find it again.
21:09
Sorry.
21:10
Uh, evidently he made these arrangements clandestinely in order to prevent his premature burial
21:15
or betrayal by Judas.
21:17
So yeah, like you said, he's in control of everything.
21:19
He's got it down at the minute, the second because of Judas, how's it going to happen?
21:23
Yeah.
21:24
He knew it was going to happen there.
21:25
He'd do it there instead of the garden and he had to have that moment, you know, and look
21:28
at what happened during the Passover feast, right?
21:31
You know, I mean, literally every month that our church were still today and how many churches
21:35
around the globe are every Sunday still going through that exact same representation of what
21:41
he did and the significance of those moments.
21:43
Absolutely.
21:44
Eric, if you will hit the institution of the Lord's Supper that is 26 through 29 right
21:49
on.
21:50
Now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread and after blessing it broke it and gave it to
21:55
the disciples and said, take eat.
21:58
This is my body.
21:59
And he took a cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying drink, drink of
22:04
it.
22:05
All of you for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness
22:10
of sins.
22:11
I tell you, I will not drink it again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink
22:17
it new with you in my father's kingdom.
22:20
So we could have obviously spent the entire time on any of these sections.
22:24
There's so many more sections left to go.
22:26
This is the final sacrifice, this is the fulfillment of Old Testament law and prophecy.
22:33
But one thing I didn't want to point out here is because, you know, Catholic doctrine and
22:36
history, you know, their history shows that, you know, this is, I forget what the name of
22:40
the, what it is, but it's where this actually did turn into Jesus's body whenever you were
22:45
taking it and those types of things.
22:47
There's not even a hint of that here in the text, which again gives credence to when people
22:53
make the point that Catholic belief is scripture plus church history, plus church fathers, plus
22:59
a bunch of other stuff, whereas Protestantism essentially is just what does the text say.
23:04
And there's nothing here that says that the, you know, it transmutes or whatever into an
23:08
actual flesh.
23:09
So Derek, if you will hit verse 30 through 35 and when they had sung a hymn, they went
23:16
out to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus said to them, you will all fall away because of
23:21
me this night, for it is written, I will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will
23:25
be scattered.
23:26
But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.
23:31
Peter answered him, though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.
23:36
Jesus said to him, truly I say to you this very night, before the rooster crows you will
23:40
deny me three times.
23:43
Peter said to him, even if I must die, even even if I must die with you, I will not deny
23:49
you and all the disciples said the same.
23:52
My first note I wrote on the section is, you know, Peter is cock sure, but he is cowardly.
23:57
And I mean, he was so sure of himself, like if you could have asked him a million times
24:02
he would have answered in the affirmative that, no, I'm not going to do this.
24:04
There's no way.
24:05
And then he just does.
24:06
And it just makes you wonder what changed in Peter's heart.
24:09
Yeah.
24:10
Yeah.
24:11
I mean, how, how in the world would that have happened?
24:13
I mean, I think this one is the hardest one for me to think of is, you know, for Jesus
24:17
hours earlier to say, you will all betray me.
24:21
And none of them would have ever even imagined doing hours earlier, you know, this isn't
24:26
weeks or day, see her, you know, this is just a few hours that they had to wait.
24:30
And then every one of them systematically do, you know, yeah, it's crazy.
24:35
You know, I got right on the gate on 30 says, and when they had sung a hymn, they went out
24:40
to the Mount of Olives that if I was Jesus about to be arrested and crucified, I don't
24:48
know that singing would be on my radar screen.
24:52
And yet there was something very powerful about this.
24:54
Apparently it was tradition to sing Psalms 1 16 through 118 and call the hell out.
25:00
And I won't read it because it doesn't matter.
25:02
But if you were to go look, look at what at chapter 116 verses 3 and 4, 8 and 9, 13 through
25:11
15, 117 verses 1 and then 118, 13, 14, 17, 3, 18, 22, 23 and 27, 28, it's all prophetic.
25:20
It's all speaking to the coming Christ and his crucifixion.
25:25
Pretty amazing.
25:26
But you know, I can see why they would have sung it, but that's that to me was amazing.
25:30
But yeah, I agree with you.
25:33
What like what in the world happened?
25:35
I mean, you see down lower where he he tries to tries to do something cutting off somebody's
25:41
ear, but spoiler alert, geez, I think I think what happened here maybe isn't as much a change
25:49
of heart as it was just revealing of who he really was in that moment.
25:53
Because we all know that guy, that guy that's definitely going to do the thing.
25:56
Oh, I got I got this squared away.
25:58
It's going to just doesn't happen.
25:59
Right.
26:00
Or man, if anybody came over here, I mean, you probably see this in the military, Derek,
26:03
but it's just like, gosh, if I get the chance, and I've heard a lot of, you know, guys in
26:07
the Marine Corps and all that, the dudes in boot camp that just can't wait to get their
26:11
rifle and get over there and freaking kill those terrorists and blah, blah, those are
26:14
the guys [inaudible] their pants on the bottom of the tank because they can't like they can't
26:17
deal with, you know, the bullets flying and, you know, just it reveals who they are as opposed
26:20
to changes them into something different.
26:22
Yeah.
26:23
And Jesus hadn't said it yet, but this is clearly a another representation of the spirit being
26:27
willing, but the flesh being weak, you know, I mean, you could say all you want that man
26:32
in the moment.
26:33
What are you going to do?
26:34
Well, let's go to the garden.
26:35
Who read last?
26:36
I did.
26:37
Robert, if you would hit the garden of Gethsemane, that is 36 through 46, then Jesus went with
26:42
them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, sit here while I go
26:47
over there and pray and taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be
26:52
sorrowful and troubled.
26:53
Then he said to them, my soul is very sorrowful.
26:57
According to death, remain here and watch with me.
27:01
And going a little further, he fell on his face and he prayed saying, my father, if it
27:05
is possible, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.
27:11
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, so you could
27:15
not watch with me just one hour.
27:18
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.
27:22
This spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
27:25
Again, for the second time he went away and prayed, my father, if this cannot pass, unless
27:30
I drink it, your will be done.
27:32
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy.
27:37
So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words
27:41
again, then he came to his disciples and said to them, sleep and take your rest later on.
27:47
See the hour is at hand and the son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
27:52
Rise, let us be going, see my betrayer is at hand.
27:57
So the word guess so many means the crushing or oil press, there's a lot of different things,
28:02
but what do you consider what's happening here?
28:05
Think about the pressure that Jesus had to have felt because he was fully man, right?
28:09
Fully God and fully man, something that's hard for us to wrap our minds around.
28:13
But he was feeling the pressure of this moment because there's no way he couldn't have Eric,
28:17
suddenly he was aware of all this, but he was still checking like, hey, is this what has
28:24
to happen?
28:25
Like God, does this, you know, father, is this what has to happen?
28:29
And you could tell by the end there, like he calmly accepts his decision and the father's
28:34
will.
28:35
But again, it's kind of hard to say he was in consternation because he is God, he's part
28:40
of the triune, but like again, he's still experiencing this as a man would and as evidenced by the
28:45
fact that he experienced the pain of what was to fall him very soon.
28:50
Yeah, Jeremiah 2515 talks about drink that Jesus is going to drink the cup of God's fury.
28:58
I didn't, I never put that those, the passage of Matthew together with that before.
29:04
But I just wrote down that Jesus was more concerned with God's judgment than he was with death.
29:10
Like he could reckon with death, but he didn't particularly want to have to take on God's
29:15
judgment and his fury yet he was willing.
29:18
And what is he weighing?
29:19
You know, I mean, when you look at what was on the scale, he, I think he knew the true
29:23
measure that he was going to have to suffer.
29:25
I think he truly knew exactly the extent he was going to be beat, the crucifixion, what
29:32
all was entailed for him.
29:33
But then on the other hand, he knew that not only was it God's fury that was there, but
29:38
it was the redemption of all mankind as his sacrifice would allow from now on all of us
29:46
to have direct communion with the father.
29:48
I mean, that's, you know, to weigh one suffering over, you know, the scale and where he was.
29:56
I mean, that's just, I can't imagine it's powerful.
29:58
Well, and we can see that the cross was one in the garden because he prayed, he asked for
30:05
the cup if it could be removed to be removed, it was not going to be.
30:09
And so he, he pre-decided and he's like, okay, this, it's, it's done.
30:13
This is what we're doing.
30:14
I'm going forward with this.
30:15
So there was no in the moment as he's about to get nailed or to the cross.
30:19
We're like, whoa, wait, wait, no, it was just, this is, this is how it is.
30:22
And not to be lost here is the, the actions of the disciples here.
30:26
Exactly.
30:27
Right.
30:28
I mean, my, oh, go ahead.
30:29
If you got something to say on that, but it's just like, you know, Peter, James and John,
30:32
it's like good.
30:33
Good Lord.
30:34
I was just kind of stuck out to me is like, he comes back, they're asleep.
30:38
Okay.
30:39
And he goes back, come back again, sleeping again.
30:41
And it's like, these are like, what you talk about, your foxhole guys, I think probably
30:45
he's selected these three to go back there with him.
30:48
And he's going through this extremely, you know, difficult time.
30:52
Maybe he's coming out to talk to these guys to like give him some encouragement or something.
30:55
But yeah, they're asleep or maybe he needed them.
30:58
Well, all you did need him.
30:59
He's like, I just need y'all to stand by and pray for me.
31:01
Why go up there and freaking suffer?
31:03
Yeah.
31:04
Yeah.
31:05
Not that I mean, like we said earlier, obviously I'd probably be doing the same thing these
31:08
guys are doing.
31:09
I'm tired.
31:10
I'm falling asleep.
31:11
But it's hard to.
31:12
It reminds me of Job whenever his friends came and you know, and Job, I'm sure Job
31:15
at first was like, oh, my friends are going to come console me, you know, and then they
31:19
just betrayed him with their words of like, well, what would you do, man?
31:22
Well, that's your problem.
31:23
Again, there's a lot of emotion in those words and there's got to be emotion here in verse
31:26
40.
31:27
So, so you could not watch with me one hour.
31:30
Oh, come on, guys, you can watch with me one hour.
31:32
Is that how you think he said it?
31:34
Is that how you think you guys said it?
31:35
It's like, could you guys not watch with for one hour for one hour?
31:39
I want you guys to just be there for me in prayer, right?
31:43
And again, we don't know that because we don't have the tone of what's happening here, but
31:48
contextually, it wouldn't make sense that he would just be casually like, Oh, gosh,
31:51
I can't believe you guys didn't do that.
31:52
It's very, very disappointing.
31:53
If I was, if I had an anger issue, I swear I'd run you guys out of here with a whip or
31:57
something like that.
31:59
So let's keep this going.
32:00
We're going to get to the actual betrayal and arrest of Jesus now.
32:02
So Eric, you have the horrible honors of reading this terrible account.
32:05
So 47 through 56.
32:09
While he was still speaking, Judas came one of the 12 and with him, a great crowd with
32:13
swords and clubs from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
32:18
Now the betrayer had given them a sign saying the one I will kiss is the man sees him and
32:23
he came up to Jesus at once and said, greetings Rabbi and he kissed them.
32:28
And Jesus said to him, friend, do what you came to do.
32:33
Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him and behold, one of those who
32:38
were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew the sword and struck a servant of the
32:42
high priest and cut off his ear.
32:44
Then Jesus said to him, put your sword back in its place.
32:47
For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
32:50
You think I cannot appeal to my father and he will at once send more than 12 legions
32:55
of angels, but how then should the scripture be fulfilled that it must be so.
33:01
At that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, have you come out against a robber with swords
33:05
and clubs to capture me day after day?
33:08
I sat in the temple teaching you did not seize me, but all this has taken place for the scriptures
33:14
of the prophets might be fulfilled.
33:17
Then all the disciples left him and fled.
33:19
There's a lot here.
33:20
Verse 47, whenever Matthew describes Judas, he doesn't just say Judas, he says Judas
33:26
came one of the 12.
33:28
So this really underscores treachery.
33:30
That's how the ESV study Bible puts it is just a really underscores his treachery.
33:35
The Greek word used whenever Jesus said friend in verse 50 implies that Judas is now considered
33:42
as an acquaintance, not a close personal connection anymore.
33:46
So I thought that that was an interesting note.
33:48
I forget which commentary said that.
33:50
Yes.
33:51
So the Greek word there is just, you know, hey, person, hey, buddy, like, you know, come
33:55
and do what what you've come here to do.
33:58
But I wanted to park on verse 52 there for a second, you know, when Jesus repudiates Peter
34:02
for cutting off Malchus's ear, you know, put your sword back in its place for all who take
34:06
up the sword will perish by the sword.
34:08
There are a lot of morons.
34:09
I think this is a repudiation of self-defense.
34:12
Obviously it's not.
34:13
This is Jesus saying to Peter, you are in the way, get out of the way, like my father's
34:21
will needs to be done.
34:22
You are currently in the way.
34:23
Can you please stop it?
34:24
But the ESV study Bible had a really interesting note here and it's that true disciples of
34:29
Jesus do not seek to advance or impose God's will on others through violent means paging
34:36
Islam.
34:37
But that's an interesting note here to where it's like, Hey, we're not going to do what
34:41
needs to happen here by forcing it upon people.
34:44
We're not going to give them the option of paying a tax, you know, being killed or having
34:48
something, you know, taken off of them, right?
34:50
Like those aren't the options, right?
34:52
Or I guess the other option would be conversion.
34:54
It's just like, no, this is not the will of the father to force people to do this.
34:58
And so I thought that that was an interesting note from that commentary.
35:01
It makes me wonder if Peter, when he said, I'll never betray you, I'm going into the
35:06
battle with you.
35:07
Yeah.
35:08
But that moment is like, Oh, okay, this is it.
35:11
This is when the conquer comes out.
35:14
And I'm grabbing my sword.
35:15
I'm going to be the first guy.
35:16
Let's go.
35:17
And then now that's not how we're doing it.
35:19
And I think I wonder if his spirit spirit was crushed in that moment where he was like,
35:23
Oh crap, this is not what I thought.
35:27
What is what is this leads to his denial to wear this entire time for three years.
35:33
He's like, Jesus is going, he's he's going to be a conquering general.
35:38
And then in this exact moment, he's ready to go into battle and the general says, no,
35:44
it's not going to be this way.
35:46
Exactly.
35:47
And perhaps he is just absolutely flummox because imagine thinking somebody was one thing for
35:51
three years and in an instant, they show you, no, that's not it.
35:54
That's not me.
35:55
Like the amount of jaded that he had to have been that may, perhaps that leads to the fact
36:00
that he was close enough to be able to see Jesus here just in a moment, but far enough
36:05
way to be like, I don't know what to think anymore.
36:07
Yeah.
36:08
That guy.
36:09
Yeah.
36:10
Yeah.
36:11
And he handled his business.
36:12
I mean, he was the only one that pulled a sword, right?
36:13
It was him and Jesus, everybody else pulled back against how many soldiers that was there.
36:17
I mean, yeah.
36:19
And then for Jesus to sit there and telling rebuke him in the middle of battle, I mean,
36:24
you wouldn't expect that.
36:25
You can't imagine the shaking.
36:26
Yeah.
36:27
I mean, there's, there's great redemption.
36:28
You know, see Peter cut off the ear with a sword, but later on, through just being redeemed,
36:34
he's able to pierce hearts with the gospel.
36:36
Yeah.
36:37
I mean, there is a good ending to the story, but in that moment, that's a very low point.
36:41
There typically is a good ending for those that are called by the, by God.
36:44
So next guy up, if you'll hit 57 through 68, then those who had seized Jesus, led him
36:52
to Kaiaphas, the high priest for the scribes and the elders were gathered and Peter was
36:57
following him in a distance.
36:58
As far as the courtyard of the high priest and going inside, he sat with the guards to
37:02
see the end.
37:03
Now, the chief priest and the kelp hole counsel were seeking false testimony against Jesus,
37:09
but they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came
37:14
forward.
37:15
At last, two came forward and said, this man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God
37:21
and to rebuild it in three days.
37:23
And the high priest stood up and said, have you no answer to make?
37:28
What is it that these men testify against you, but Jesus remained silent, and the high
37:33
priest said to him, I adore you, the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son
37:38
of God.
37:39
Jesus said to him, you have said so, but I tell you, from now on, you will see the son
37:44
of man seated on the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.
37:49
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, he is uttered, uttered blasphemy.
37:53
What further witness do you need?
37:56
You have now heard this blasphemy.
37:58
What is your judgment?
37:59
They answered, he deserves death, then they spit in his face and stuck him, struck him.
38:06
And some slapped him saying, prophesied to us Christ, who is it that struck you?
38:11
So this all occurred under cover of darkness, which was not to be permitted, but it was
38:15
done anyway.
38:17
I really want to focus in initially here on verses 63 and 64, because people will read
38:23
verse.
38:24
They read these two verses and say, see, Jesus was given a chance to say he was, you know,
38:28
the son of God that he was divine, and he didn't do it.
38:32
But it's a complete misread of these two scriptures because the way they read it is they read
38:36
verse 64 this way, Jesus said to him, you have said so, but that's not it.
38:42
This is a direct confirmation.
38:44
We see this in how language is structured in the original Aramaic with which it would
38:47
have been spoken in the Greek and Hebrew and Latin that it would have been, you know, written
38:53
down on in the first century.
38:55
But the thing is here is him being silent to a degree is a fulfillment of prophecy.
39:01
So as we see in Isaiah 53 seven, I'm, I'm meant to bring that up.
39:04
I'll bring it up here in a second just to read it.
39:07
They wanted Jesus to admit out loud that he had done these things so that they could charge
39:11
him with insurrection.
39:12
And so he stayed silent.
39:13
Are you going to look that up for me?
39:14
That's, yeah, when he is led like, like a land with a slaughter.
39:17
Yeah.
39:18
Cap his mouth silent.
39:19
Yeah, kept his mouth silent.
39:20
And the other thing is that's implied here, and I had never heard anyone talk about this
39:23
before.
39:24
But silence implies that he thinks if he had spoken up that he would have been acquitted
39:29
because again, they're, you know, this will eventually go before the people.
39:32
They weren't going to be able to execute him in complete secrecy.
39:35
They could do this part in secret, but it's like if he spoke up in his own defense, like
39:39
especially considering the timing that these guys didn't even want this to be happening
39:43
while there was all the crowds, I think they were making a calculation here and that he
39:47
was also, he's filling prophecy, but making the calculation that I can't fulfill my father's
39:51
will if I get acquitted because the time is now right.
39:54
I mean, and there are so many illegalities if that's like where there's so many.
39:58
Eligales.
39:59
Eligales.
40:00
He was close.
40:01
I went to school.
40:03
That happened in that.
40:04
I mean, if this had happened in our courts, you know, you would think it'd just be thrown
40:07
out.
40:08
It's like, doesn't, doesn't count.
40:09
But Jesus, you know, in that time, they didn't have lawyers.
40:11
There weren't like prosecution lawyers and offense lawyers.
40:14
It was just literally witnesses coming to either testify on your behalf or against you.
40:21
And it looked like they found two and I think the legal way to do this for the judge was
40:27
that those two could not have any collaboration with one another.
40:30
They had to be heard completely separate, which apparently didn't happen here.
40:33
But you're right.
40:34
Jesus could have called witnesses.
40:35
I mean, how many witnesses did he have that he had?
40:37
I mean, people did he heal thousands?
40:38
Yes.
40:39
Right there in the city.
40:40
Right.
40:41
That he could have called and he did not for the exact reason that it was his time.
40:45
He knew what had needed to happen.
40:46
Yeah.
40:47
He needed to be undercover of darkness in order for hidden God's will to be done.
40:50
And for his to drink the cup that had to be done.
40:53
So any other way would have, you know, would have not have thought about God's will in
40:56
it.
40:57
So.
40:58
And now we get to see Peter act out in his jaded nature nature.
41:02
So let's close it out.
41:03
Whoever's up next, 69 through the end of chapter 26, that's first 75.
41:08
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard and a servant girl came up to him and said,
41:12
you also were with the Jesus, the Galilean, but he denied it before the mall saying, I
41:17
do not know what you mean, and when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl
41:21
saw him and she said to the bystanders, this man was with Jesus of Nazareth.
41:27
And again, he denied it with an oath.
41:29
I do not know the man.
41:31
After a little while, the bystanders came up and said to Peter, certainly you two are
41:35
one of them for your accent betrays you and he began to invoke a curse on himself and
41:41
to swear, I do not know the man and immediately the rooster crowed.
41:45
And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus before the rooster crows.
41:49
You will deny me three times and he went out and wept bitterly.
41:53
I mean, I can't even really put myself into that position of feeling like he felt with,
42:00
but with Peter disavowing Jesus, I'm actually looking at it here in Luke.
42:04
Luke records that Peter disowning Jesus.
42:09
That's Luke, what is it, sorry, Luke 22 versus 54 through 62.
42:16
But it basically says that Luke or it says that Peter and Jesus made eye contact and
42:21
that's depicted in the Passion of the Christ.
42:24
And it is just like there's no corollary.
42:28
I don't think like I can't think of a single thing or moment in my life that could have
42:33
something even close to that because I guess I don't have some people are just portrayers
42:40
by nature.
42:41
They're just very hard to depend on and it's just, you know, they just betray people all
42:45
the time.
42:46
They're just wretched.
42:47
But this is one of those moments where it's like, I can't really get down with that.
42:51
Now, this has been interesting to have this conversation to where she where Peter's mindset
42:55
is that where he was thinking Jesus or who he was thinking Jesus was for three years.
42:59
Because again, obviously everybody missed the thread, they missed all the signs of nope,
43:04
this isn't going to be a military coup, nope, it's not going to be a military coup.
43:07
It's going to be a spiritual one.
43:09
So it's like, you got to have to give Peter a break here, but he denies him.
43:13
But then after that third denial, he makes eye contact with Jesus and are they right
43:19
next to each other?
43:20
Are they close enough to where they could have like whispered something to each other?
43:23
Are they, you know, separated by 50 yards, but they could still see each other make eye
43:27
contact and know what's being communicated in that moment, it's just like, what an overwhelming
43:31
scene.
43:32
Yeah.
43:33
Yeah.
43:34
And I don't, you know, that is this rock bottom?
43:36
Does he is hitting rock bottom at that moment?
43:38
So he goes out and webs bitterly, is that because in that moment, he's like, what have
43:44
I done?
43:45
He truly is a son of God.
43:47
And I just, he just, you know, that, that what he said just came to fruition.
43:52
Yeah.
43:53
I don't, I don't know.
43:54
But I mean, if he did hit rock bottom, he stayed there.
43:56
He stayed there until the resurrection, you know, I mean, everything that he saw after
44:01
that, the disparity, you know, that everyone beginning to disband or in almost about to
44:06
disband between the crucifixion and the resurrection, you know, they're meeting like, what do
44:10
we do now?
44:11
You know, I can't imagine the disparity that he was in in that moment.
44:14
Yeah.
44:15
And I mean, guys, we are marching our way towards the end here, but they're good and give us
44:19
your thoughts there.
44:20
Uh, kind of on the same subject, uh, listen to a John MacArthur sermon recently.
44:27
And it was about the tail.
44:28
It's called the tale of two disciples and it kind of goes into Peter and Judas and how
44:33
both were, uh, personally selected by Jesus to be disciples, uh, they're taught by Jesus,
44:39
saw his power, saw his miracles, both denied him, one, uh, you can see wept bitterly after
44:47
he denies him, and then one goes out, uh, betrays him and then commit suicide eventually.
44:52
Um, and then it kind of goes into Peter and how he's redeemed through the whole thing.
44:59
And, uh, like his name is praised.
45:02
He's like a super great, uh, uh, saint in the faith and Judas, like you won't even
45:08
don't even name your dog, Judas, like it's a name, like you're not, that's not to be spoken
45:12
basically.
45:13
It's just kind of an interesting, uh, take on it.
45:15
Yeah, it is. Yeah, can you imagine naming a kid, Judas, like, like there's not even,
45:19
I don't even know, like culturally, it probably goes across different languages, like whatever
45:23
that name is meant to even correlate with if it even sounds like Judas, like you can't
45:27
even name a kid pubis or something like that.
45:29
It's like not that we can't do it too close, but, um, I will say as we wrap up our discussion
45:35
to Matthew 26, make sure you guys are read through Matthew 27.
45:40
Okay.
45:41
'Cause next week we're going to blow your mind because we got a very, very special guest
45:46
that is going to be with us here at the forging table.
45:49
You hush around here, I'm not telling anybody, but if you've listened all the way here to
45:53
the end of Matthew 26, you're, you're going to get a little bit of a treat here because
45:57
for the closing two chapters of Matthew, Matthew 27 and 28, I'm not going to tell you, I'm
46:02
not going to tell you.
46:03
I'm not going to do, I was going to have to sing about it.
46:04
I'm not going to do it.
46:05
I'm not going to do it.
46:06
I will not be peer pressured guys.
46:09
But you do, if you are behind it, let's say you're chilling out, Matthew 11, you get caught
46:13
up this week because it'll be worth it because we got a very, very special guest that is
46:18
flying in flying it, doesn't that sound fancy with it's not going to say that's not going
46:24
to say that you're coming from tools is coming from a lot in Oklahoma.
46:29
Only people in Oklahoma will know how ratchet of a suggestion that is shout out to my hometown.
46:34
But guys, all kidding aside, very, very special guests coming in to be a part of what we have
46:39
going on here.
46:40
It is somebody that has been following what we've been doing is sold out to the mission
46:44
of Undaunted Life, loves the forging table and we are so, so happy to have this person
46:49
come here to help us do the last two weeks of Matthew and then we'll go on from there.
46:54
But we're going to have to leave it there for today.
46:56
Make sure you're read through Matthew 27 for next week so you're ready to go.
47:01
But before we let you go, we are going to do a quick resilience boost at Undaunted Life.
47:04
Our mission is equipping men to push back darkness with content that forges spiritual
47:08
mental and physical resilience.
47:09
Don't forget about the cross way.
47:10
The forging table starter set, you can check that all out here.
47:14
All the explanations and instructions are all here in the show notes.
47:16
You can check that out.
47:17
But also our donation page, guys, if you don't know if you've just been wondering this whole
47:21
time, how is it that they pull these things off?
47:23
How is it that they have electricity to the studio?
47:26
How is it that Kyle was able to fix that light a couple of weeks ago and not have to
47:29
go into debt?
47:30
It's because we have donors.
47:31
It's because we have guys just like you that are sold out to our mission.
47:34
You want to be equipped to be able to push back darkness and you want us to be able to
47:36
do the same with men around the globe.
47:38
The only way we're currently able to do that is because we have donors hopping in on a
47:41
monthly basis to hook us up with coins so that we can turn that into, I don't know,
47:45
what will we turn that into?
47:46
Just amazingly positive things that can be used for the Kingdom, guys.
47:50
How positive?
47:51
More than encouraging.
47:52
Positive encouraging.
47:53
I can't do it.
47:54
I just can't bring myself to do it.
47:56
