This is Undaunted Life Man's Podcast, I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
0:57
Welcome back to the forging table.
0:58
The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping into pushback darkness with content that
1:01
forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:04
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:07
by digging into God's word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey
1:10
with us.
1:11
We got the OG crew in the house today, that's Matt, that's Eric, that's Ryan, but before
1:15
we get into Matthew 11, there was about to be a knockdown drag out debate, I think that
1:21
was going to happen at this table.
1:22
So I went in and hit the record button, starting to get into the cooler months of the year,
1:25
things like that.
1:27
So, the question is, are you still a man if you wear a scarf?
1:32
Because here we are in Oklahoma, we don't live in, there's no frozen tundra around here,
1:35
and I just got to tell you, I've never been a scarf guy, my wife wanted me to be a scarf
1:39
and peacoat guy and I was just like, I never wanted something wrapped around my neck and
1:45
I've never thought to myself, oh my neck is so cold, I need my Adam's lap all to have
1:49
some cashmere on it.
1:50
So like, what's everyone's opinions on because, you know, Ryan said maybe the most offensive
1:55
thing he could have said to Eric, which was Eric, you look like a guy that would wear
1:58
a scarf and you seem like you took some offense to that.
2:01
So where are we on scarves?
2:02
I have zero scarves in my, in my closet.
2:05
Are they all in your wife's closet?
2:07
Let me just go over there and get them.
2:10
I have zero use of scarves regardless.
2:13
I think scarves are manly.
2:15
I like to wear the ones that like the guys and like the Navy seals and stuff would wear
2:19
when they're out in the desert, and they just look really, oh, VA, I'm just a word.
2:24
You just run around and then just like sometimes, I mean, not, not anymore.
2:29
I mean, back when, when I was, you know, single and probably not the best role model, I used
2:36
to think they were really cool.
2:38
But how would you wear them?
2:39
Would you wear them with?
2:40
So I wear them wrapped around my neck with like a really cool shirt and a long sleeve shirt
2:45
like in the fall.
2:46
And then sometimes I wore a bolo hat with a, you know, I, you know what?
2:49
Now when I think about it, somebody should have given me a pumpkin spice latte.
2:53
You were a complete [inaudible] back in the day.
2:55
I was.
2:56
That's not a [inaudible].
2:57
I really was.
2:58
I drove a BMW and I had myself born and you talked about yourself in the third person.
3:03
I did.
3:04
I did.
3:05
And that's why there's Jesus and that's why we need Jesus.
3:08
That would be a good segue.
3:09
But the problem is is Matt's being very quiet about this whole scarves thing.
3:12
I've just been waiting.
3:13
Just been waiting to talk.
3:14
No.
3:15
So what's up, scarf guy?
3:16
I have scars.
3:17
I've worn scars.
3:18
I don't prefer them, but I will say this.
3:20
Spurgeon wore scars.
3:21
He did.
3:22
And I don't think anyone here would debate that Spurgeon wasn't a man.
3:27
So I think it's just okay.
3:29
That's it.
3:30
What?
3:31
It was all right.
3:32
Just a matter of progress.
3:33
There are 10 different ways of doing scarves, wearing scarves.
3:36
I'm just sitting here like parrying.
3:37
We're going to talk about scarves and masculinity.
3:41
I think next time you should ask Vodie and Owen about that and maybe okay.
3:47
We can see that.
3:48
But now I'm super curious about this 10 different ways to do a scarf.
3:51
Is there a way to go through these quickly?
3:53
Because we're so far down this rabbit hole now.
3:54
This has done.
3:55
I keep going.
3:56
I keep going.
3:57
Yeah, right.
3:58
All right.
3:59
The first one is the drape.
4:01
Just drape it over.
4:03
So basically.
4:04
Yeah.
4:05
That's like decaf coffee.
4:06
Yeah.
4:07
The ones around, we go around.
4:08
Yeah.
4:09
Okay.
4:10
That's pulled tight.
4:11
That's better.
4:12
Might die.
4:13
You've got the overhand where you come around in the winter and then over.
4:15
You've got the reverse drape, which is back behind you.
4:20
That's how I work.
4:21
I work reverse.
4:22
That's not, that's not, that's not.
4:23
No way.
4:24
That's not backwards.
4:25
So I would wear it and then I would wear it back like that and look like that.
4:28
That's not.
4:29
No, dude.
4:30
I got pictures.
4:31
I don't want to see pictures.
4:32
I got.
4:33
Yeah.
4:34
No, let's keep going.
4:35
Let's keep going.
4:36
All right.
4:37
Let's keep going.
4:38
You got the Parisian knot.
4:39
Yes.
4:40
Sounds humanely, but fake knot.
4:41
You've got a fake knot.
4:42
That's definitely not masculine.
4:43
Okay.
4:44
Okay.
4:45
Yeah.
4:46
Reverse drape.
4:47
Talk.
4:48
And now that we're talking about it.
4:50
Talking under.
4:51
You've got the reverse drape cross two more, the four in hand.
4:56
Oh my goodness.
4:57
That's like level five on difficulty.
5:00
And the last one looks like to be the twice around.
5:03
That's definitely when you guys.
5:04
Okay.
5:05
So guys, just so we're listening this because I can literally see Ryan's fingers furiously
5:08
moving.
5:09
I think he has pictures of himself in each one of those different 10 categories.
5:14
So we will post that on our Instagram, hopefully sometime here soon.
5:19
Now this is literally going to be the world's worst transition, but let's go back to the
5:22
gospel of Matthew.
5:23
Is that is that going to be okay?
5:24
Since we're talking about all this nonsense, like a scarf, the gospel can wrap us in.
5:28
Oh my.
5:29
Yes.
5:30
Beautiful segue.
5:31
What's around or twice?
5:32
You already had a mustache.
5:33
You didn't have to try to make the smoothest transition possible.
5:36
Well, hey, mustache, how about you read Matthew 11 versus one through six.
5:39
You got it.
5:41
When Jesus had finished instructing his 12 disciples, he went on from there to teach
5:45
and preach in their cities.
5:47
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples
5:52
and said to him, are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another?
5:57
And Jesus answered them, go and tell John what you hear and see the blind received their
6:02
sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf here and the dead are raised
6:08
up and the poor have good news preached to them and blessed is the one who is not offended
6:13
by me.
6:14
Okay.
6:15
So this is where we really start to see true opposition to Jesus' ministry of it's really
6:21
the first time we see in Matthew where it's not just like, okay, this is weird.
6:24
I don't exactly know what's going on.
6:26
This is like true opposition.
6:28
But what I want to ask you guys, because I kind of know where I land on this, but obviously
6:33
it's well known this part where John is, are you the one who is to come or shall we look
6:37
for another?
6:38
And based on your personality, you will read into those words, tonality, right?
6:44
And so it's like, is he like, are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another?
6:48
Or is it more exasperation, desperation, like, Hey, man, man, maybe I made a mistake here.
6:54
Are you the one to come or is there another?
6:56
Like, I couldn't really surmise it from the different commentaries I read.
7:01
Like where do you guys land on that?
7:02
Because it's like, is it misunderstanding, exasperation, sarcasm?
7:05
I think you can look at some of the context of John's situation.
7:08
He's in prison.
7:10
He is in a desperate state.
7:12
I think he staked his life on the fact that Jesus is the coming Messiah, the savior of
7:18
his people.
7:20
And I also, you also have to look at like, what was the Jewish context of the Messiah?
7:25
And so I think John who boldly proclaimed that one who's greater than me is coming to
7:30
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire, like the Axis laid at the root of the tree.
7:36
Like he was bold, but I think he was, he was also like other Jewish people looking for
7:41
something that was not, I think, I think it was confusion.
7:46
Like, I think he was like, he thought the Messiah was going to come and bring judgment.
7:50
I mean, we're talking about bringing judgment by fire.
7:52
So it's kind of confusing when he's healing all these people and, you know, the lame and
7:57
the sick, which doesn't make sense in their culture.
7:59
Because if you're lame and you're sick, it's due to sin.
8:02
So I think them coming back in Christ coming back and just healing and not bringing judgment
8:07
cost some confusion.
8:09
But when it comes down to it, he did the acts in front of John's disciples and went back
8:14
to John and knew that John was going to automatically believe it.
8:17
Yeah.
8:18
And the prophecy that you're, you were just alluding to is from Isaiah 42, it says to open
8:22
the eyes that are blind to bring out prisoners from the dungeon from the prison who sit in
8:27
the darkness.
8:28
And I think, you know, one of the things he could see is our hear about was that people
8:33
were being healed, people were going from being blind to being able to see, but he was
8:37
like, wait a second, but I'm still, I'm still in the dungeon.
8:40
When do I get freed?
8:42
You know, so I think maybe there was some, well, when does that happen?
8:44
Well, you could almost see in the way he talks to the Pharisees in the beginning of Matthew
8:49
in the beginning of Jesus's ministry where John is, is rebuking these guys.
8:54
And then he literally ends up in prison for abuking Herod and you can almost sense this
8:59
like he's here and I'm going to get more bold because you're about to go down.
9:03
Not Ryan.
9:04
I'm pointing at Ryan, but like the Pharisees are about to like your, the judgment is coming
9:09
for you and it's going to be swift.
9:11
And then it didn't come the way he thought it would come.
9:14
And I think that kind of caused some confusion like you're saying, right?
9:16
When I don't get the sense that John needed to be emboldened to say what he needed to
9:21
say or proclaim, what he needed to proclaim because we'll, we'll get more into the, the
9:25
plight of John here, you know, later in some, some future episodes.
9:29
But I get the sense that Jesus knows, well, obviously Jesus knows John's heart in this
9:34
exact moment because he gives him, I don't even know if you can call it a rebuke, but
9:39
his response is the mildest of rebuke.
9:43
Like it is just so mild to where it's like, Hey, go and tell him that all these things
9:47
are happening and the cool thing about, you know, go tell John that the blind received
9:52
their sight and the lame walk.
9:54
That's Isaiah 29, 35.
9:56
And then we got lepers or cleanse in the deaf here.
9:59
That's Isaiah 29 and 35 and 53 that lepers or cleanse or sorry, I just read that.
10:05
The poor will have the good news.
10:07
Preach them.
10:08
That's Isaiah 61.
10:09
I mean, he's basically preaching scripture to John to be almost be like, bro, I know.
10:14
Yeah, I know what it seems like right now.
10:17
But the things that have been foretold, the thing that you are foretelling and pointing
10:22
the way to they're happening.
10:25
So it's like, it's almost just like, Hey, just relax.
10:27
Just a little bit.
10:28
Well, this is also part of Matthew's case.
10:30
Like, if anybody has question of what Matthew's favorite book of the Old Testament was, clearly
10:35
it's Isaiah, he quotes Isaiah a ton and he's laying out his case for Jews who were also
10:40
probably in similar thought processes to John there.
10:44
We have a Messiah that's supposed to come, but we, he's not coming the way we thought
10:50
he was coming.
10:51
And so Matthew is, he is literally laying out his case for the king to be on his throne.
10:57
And this is why it's because he's fulfilling these prophecies.
11:00
I think John was just jumping ahead.
11:03
John, I think when we look at the Messiah, when they thought the Messiah was coming to
11:07
bring judgment, he is he's going to come back and do that in revelation.
11:11
But right now he's setting it up.
11:13
He's giving the ultimate sacrifice so that you have a way to be before God.
11:19
And so we must set that up before you can come and pass judgment.
11:24
Right.
11:25
Well, I want to keep this going.
11:26
But just real quick, I did want to point something out to you guys.
11:28
We've talked about this before.
11:29
We get a lot of feedback about having your own forging table.
11:32
Like, Hey, what do we do?
11:33
I want to start this.
11:34
Like, what do I need to do?
11:35
And what do I need to make happen?
11:36
So as I've talked about on previous episodes, crossway has teamed up with us to create a
11:41
forging table starter said, if you're watching this right now, you will see the stack of
11:45
books right there to my right.
11:47
But this, you know, between our team here and the crossway team, it's like, okay, if
11:50
you're going to start a forging table, here are the things that you need.
11:52
So you need a great Bible.
11:53
So there's the ESV men's study Bible there.
11:56
You need some journaling materials.
11:58
And so that's the book of Romans, scripture journal edition.
12:01
So it's the combination of this crossway scripture journal and that Bible that's in front
12:05
of Eric right now, the ESV study Bible.
12:07
But then also there's a devotional that's new morning mercies by Paul David trip.
12:11
There's an explanation of the different types of themes of writing within the Bible.
12:16
So that's the beauty and power of biblical exposition by Douglas O'Donnell.
12:20
And then just how are you going to operate as a man in this world as a father as a shepherd.
12:24
So there's the book, Family Shepherds by the great Vody Bopam, I said, Bob, like Vody
12:30
soccer, Bob, there's our first sorry, Jobe of the day.
12:33
But just a three step process for you guys to get that set.
12:35
So if you go to crossway.org, this is not a paid commercial, but I'm just doing this
12:39
for y'all's benefit crossway.org, create a free crossway plus account.
12:43
So make sure you register the account as well.
12:45
Put all five of those books in your cart.
12:47
The books will be in the show notes.
12:49
And then when you go to check out, use the promo code BSSP 50 and you will get 50% off
12:55
of all those books at checkout.
12:57
You will not find a better deal on the internet.
12:59
You cannot piecemeal a better deal together.
13:00
So it's BSSP 50.
13:02
That's Bravo Sierra Sierra, Papa, five zero again, all that will be in the show notes.
13:07
So let's go right back in because again, we get some more hints as to how Jesus is taking
13:12
these words from John.
13:13
So Eric, if you could read seven through 11, please.
13:19
As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John.
13:23
What did you go out to the wilderness to see a reed shaken by the wind?
13:27
What then did you go out to see a man dressed in soft clothing, clothing like a scarf?
13:33
Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in King's houses.
13:38
What then did you go out to see a prophet?
13:40
Yes, I tell you and more than a prophet.
13:43
This is he of whom it is written, behold, I send my messenger before your face will prepare
13:49
your way before you said to 11.
13:52
Yes, please.
13:53
Truly, I say to you among those born of women, there has arisen no one greater than John the
13:59
Baptist yet.
14:00
The one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
14:04
So again, we get Jesus providing a defense of John's ministry here.
14:10
So I think that kind of answers the question that I posed at the beginning for all of us
14:13
to consider is what what was Jesus's response to this?
14:16
What was John's heart?
14:17
There would have been a significant rebuke again, even at this point in the gospels, Jesus
14:21
has rebuked and he's rebuked plenty.
14:24
And so you could assume that he would still rebuke John and he just doesn't.
14:28
He again, I said mild rebuke possibly, but then provides an immediate defense of his
14:32
ministry.
14:33
He says, Hey, he is the one that was foretold in Malachi three one that, you know, he is
14:37
the guy that's going to prepare the way.
14:39
But verse 11, but that's where I really want to focus in on.
14:42
So truly, I say to you, among those born of women, there has arisen no one greater than
14:46
John the Baptist.
14:47
No better compliment is possible for any human being in the history of existence than that.
14:53
But then Jesus flips it.
14:54
Okay, yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
15:00
So considering the gravity of a compliment like that, he makes the point that you can
15:08
be the greatest person born of woman.
15:10
But if you don't have me, you are nothing.
15:14
You could be the worst person in the history of the globe.
15:17
But if you have me, you have it all and I feel like, I feel like this is a great message
15:25
for people who are checking most of the boxes in their life, right?
15:29
So the people that have a lot of money, they've succeeded in their careers.
15:33
They graduated top of their class in school.
15:35
They were the best athlete.
15:36
They were all state.
15:37
They've married the perfect woman who never fights.
15:39
The kids constantly just do what they tell them to do in life just seems to work out for
15:43
that person.
15:44
But they're not a Christian.
15:45
They're not a believer in Christ.
15:46
It's like, hey man, you're going to get your treasures here, but you're going to be sorely
15:52
mistaken when it comes to what happens afterwards.
15:56
So I feel like this is a great way to talk to people and a great way to show people like,
16:00
hey, just living a good life and having things break your way all the time doesn't work
16:04
in the afterlife.
16:05
What do y'all think?
16:07
Yeah, I mean, I see that a lot in his defense of John and the fact that out of all the
16:13
prophets, I think he points out Old Testament prophets, John's the only prophet that actually
16:17
gets to lay his eyes on the Messiah.
16:20
So what he is coming out and he's talking about, he's talking about Messiah, the Messiah,
16:25
Jesus, and he gets to lay his eyes on him.
16:26
He gets to meet him.
16:27
He gets to baptize him, you know, so that's an awesome thing.
16:30
So it makes us look at what are our treasures?
16:32
I mean, John was a guy who lived in the forest, ate locusts and honey and washed sheep skins
16:38
in not nice scarves, so in he was able to see Christ.
16:42
And so I think that's the thing that we need to look at is what we're, and we're going
16:46
to talk about this in earlier and later parables and later chapters, but like, where is our
16:50
treasure?
16:51
Where does our treasure lie?
16:52
Is it lie in our house?
16:53
Is it lie in our cars?
16:54
Is it lie in certain things and social circles?
16:57
Or does it lie in the one and only true Christ Jesus?
17:00
Yeah.
17:01
And I was just thinking, you know, if we go just to verse or two before that one, it's
17:05
talking about, you know, would you come to see a reed shaken by the wind?
17:08
I mean, I was just thinking to like, I feel like people, even our culture today are looking
17:12
for the next big thing.
17:14
What's the fad, the trend, the style, the thought, you know, is who's the person out
17:18
there that's kind of acting like the chameleon to kind of steer us this way or that way?
17:24
Or then it goes on and says the person in self, self clothing, a noble, you know, someone
17:30
showy, rich, famous that we look at and maybe even pompous, but no, they went out to see
17:36
this prophet.
17:37
So they were seeking revelation and certainly they found it in him.
17:42
And I agree exactly with what you were saying.
17:44
That's great.
17:45
I think it's kind of an allusion to the family, the adoption into the family.
17:51
Like the guy Kyle is describing in Christ, I have more in common than a little kid in
17:59
the Sahara who also is in Christ than I do with that guy because we're in the same family.
18:06
And to to that point, like John got to see the foreshadowing of Christ's atonement.
18:13
We get to experience the sonship that comes with being heirs of his kingdom through the
18:19
adoption into the family.
18:21
And man, what good news to all of us.
18:25
Beautiful news.
18:26
I think it's great considering just the context of this because again, John, the great John
18:32
the Baptist is questioning, right?
18:35
And so for us, we're not John the Baptist, like we weren't given that access to Christ
18:41
and we weren't given the job to baptize him and we didn't prepare the way for him.
18:46
And so guys, whenever you question, just remember John, like related to Jesus, the guy, the
18:55
man here, he is even having major problems, getting his head space around what is happening.
19:01
And why is that?
19:03
His circumstances.
19:04
It's because he is allowing his circumstances to dictate his feelings on God.
19:08
I've used this mild example before, but I had a good buddy of mine lose his job.
19:11
This was years ago and he started questioning whether or not God existed.
19:15
And this is a purported Christian.
19:17
He and I actually, you know, made our public declarations of our faith in Christ on the
19:21
exact same day in high school.
19:24
And then here we are in our 20s and he's having like a mild bump in the road in his career.
19:29
And the creator of the universe doesn't maybe exist anymore.
19:32
And it's like you're being just absolutely enslaved by your circumstances.
19:37
That happens to everybody.
19:38
Yeah, and I wrote down here, I just doubt is to be expected, but persisting in it is not
19:44
necessarily correct, you know, because God's word is truth.
19:49
And so if we seek it, we should find our answers.
19:51
I really like what Burke Parsons says about like emotions and doubt, because like doubt
19:58
can come out of our emotional response to an outward stimulus, right?
20:04
Like losing your job.
20:06
And he says, our emotions can be liars.
20:09
We should always be preaching the truth to our emotions.
20:12
Not that emotions aren't healthy and good, but those emotions are a lot of times not
20:19
the truth.
20:20
And if we're constantly preaching the truth to our emotions, we can get a look over a
20:25
lot of that.
20:26
Oh my gosh, I just lost my job.
20:28
Like I'm doubting God now.
20:30
I think when you look at it though, too, is like, where do we, where do we put our faith?
20:34
Do we put our faith into the material things or what we think God should be doing?
20:39
It brings up Toby Mac who lost his son, like two or three years ago and just watching his
20:44
journey through everything like, you know, Toby's always been kind of a biblical guy.
20:49
And so he said, you know, I don't know if he went through doubts, but he said he stopped
20:52
reading this Bible, you know, he's going through a tough time, just lost his first born son.
20:57
But then he was like, man, I just had to put my faith in God in this situation.
21:01
God doesn't promise me that everything in my life is going to go well, I'm going to
21:05
have the money.
21:06
I'm going to have the cars like sadness and suffering is going to come.
21:10
And it's like, where do we put our faith in that sadness and suffering?
21:13
Do we put it in ourselves and our circumstances?
21:15
Do we blame God for it?
21:17
Or do we ask God to be there with us?
21:19
And God is always going to be there with you.
21:21
You've got it.
21:22
You've got to see it.
21:23
Well, I think you even said it.
21:24
It's what we expect God to do.
21:27
God is our cosmic genie.
21:28
And look, God, look at all the boxes I've been checking lately.
21:31
And it's just like, because we are humans that are built on a reward system.
21:36
So if you do these things with your body long enough, these parts, your body will get stronger
21:40
or better or more healthy.
21:42
If you eat these foods, as opposed to those foods, you do have a reward coming, which
21:46
is typically you will feel better or you will be in better health.
21:49
If you do these things in school, you will get these grades.
21:51
If you do these things at work, you will get these promotions or these raises.
21:54
But it's whenever the rug gets pulled out from under us to where all of a sudden we're
21:58
looking around.
21:59
So let's use health as an example.
22:00
You've been working out every day and you've been eating kale and, you know, grass-fed
22:04
beef and all that.
22:05
Oop.
22:06
And then you get cancer.
22:07
Or you get in a car accident.
22:08
And now, you know, you're paralyzed.
22:09
And it's like, man, all those squats didn't really help me keep my spine intact.
22:13
And now it's like, now you have this attack of identity because of the things you've been
22:17
doing, because they were tied to, you know, I guess, overwrought expectations.
22:22
There is like this dichotomy, right, though, like Proverbs talks about a lot of practical
22:27
things if this, then this, if you do this, then this, if you avoid this, then this.
22:34
So God has laid out some moral laws and some consequences or rewards for doing those things.
22:43
But then like you're, but what you're describing though is sometimes that just doesn't play
22:46
out the way we want it to because we live in a fallen world.
22:50
That's right.
22:51
Even if we go ahead, you nailed the head, we live in a fallen world.
22:54
It's like, look at Job.
22:55
Job did all the right things.
22:56
You know, he was blameless, but things still happen because we live in a fallen world.
23:00
Look at Paul, look at any disciple.
23:03
They did all the right things.
23:04
And how did their lives end?
23:06
Pretty bad.
23:07
Yeah.
23:08
So our focus should be to abide in Christ to live with him so many times we live for
23:14
him or we do things with the expectation of reward.
23:17
We do this and we get that back and I, and I, and I agree with you like in Proverbs and
23:21
I'm sure you would agree with me as well that it just because it says that doesn't mean
23:25
it's 100% accurate all time, right?
23:27
Yeah.
23:28
100%.
23:29
So there's some people that do things with the expectation to get something back and
23:30
there, there are other people that live in fear and so they all do things and like obey
23:36
God because they don't want something bad to happen to them.
23:39
Right.
23:40
Both of those are wrong.
23:41
Yeah.
23:42
And she's misguided expectations misguided, I guess goals or the direction out of where
23:46
you're going.
23:47
Browning, I'm actually going to have you read 12 through 18 because the next section after
23:51
that has words that are hard to pronounce.
23:52
I want to make sure Ryan gets those because currently there's a one, currently there's
23:57
a one sorry, Joby at the table and it's on my head.
24:00
So I need, I need to be in second place here.
24:02
Well, if you will read 12 through 18 12 through 18 got it from the days of John the Baptist
24:09
until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence and the violent take it by force
24:15
for all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
24:20
And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
24:25
He who has ears to hear let him hear, but to what shall I compare this generation?
24:30
It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates.
24:35
We played the flute for you and you did not dance.
24:38
We sang a dirge and you did not mourn for John came neither eating nor drinking.
24:43
And they say he has a demon and 19 sorry, the son of man came eating and drinking and
24:50
they say, look at him, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
24:56
Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.
24:59
So I'm really excited to talk about 18 and 19, but let's go back to 17.
25:04
So the ESV study Bible, which is right there in front of you, Eric, they had an interesting
25:08
note on on this that I'd never really considered before, which was the people reject the gospel
25:14
and they rejected the gospel in this moment because Jesus and John didn't fit their preconceived
25:19
notions and expectations.
25:21
Right?
25:22
That's that's the summary of that note from the ESV study Bible.
25:25
And like we've talked about it a lot, but it bears repeating that what the Jews thought
25:30
was coming was a conquering warrior in their mindset, which was general military overthrowing
25:39
the Romans, you know, kind of that type of a deal, and then they get the this dirty guy
25:44
that lives out in the woods and eats locusts and honey.
25:46
And then you have this Jesus guy who's comes from a crappy city, has a crappy job.
25:51
His family has no name or really weight in the community.
25:55
We see from scripture, he wasn't an attractive guy.
25:58
So this guy wasn't, you know, tall, dark and handsome.
26:00
He was probably just dark and like those are the things that we get about Jesus.
26:05
And it's like because they didn't see, and that's how when we've talked about how did
26:09
the Pharisees and Sadducees miss it, the people that knew the scriptures the most, how did
26:13
they miss that Jesus was fulfilling all these prophecies?
26:16
It's because they just didn't fit their notions.
26:18
And that's that's a hard thing to get to.
26:20
Yeah, I have a quote from this section from Spurgeon surprise talking about violence in
26:27
the kingdom and how it's it's not easy to walk the Christian life.
26:35
And this quote, this quote was very convicting for me, and I'll I'd like to read it to you
26:39
guys too.
26:41
Frequent complaints are made and surprise expressed by individuals who have never found
26:44
a blessing, rest upon anything they have attempted to do in the service of God.
26:49
I have been a Sunday school teacher for years, says one, and I have never seen any of my
26:53
girls or boys converted.
26:54
No, and the reason most likely is you have never been violent about it.
26:59
You have never been compelled by the divine spirit to make up your mind that converted
27:03
they should be and no stone should be left unturned until they were.
27:07
You have never been brought up or brought by the spirit to such a passion that you have
27:12
said, I cannot live unless God bless me.
27:15
I cannot exist unless I see some of these children saved than falling on your knees in agony
27:20
of prayer and putting forth afterwards your trust with the same intensity towards heaven,
27:26
you would never have been disappointed for the violent take it by force.
27:30
And Spurgeon is rough, he can really be rough.
27:34
He doesn't pull punches, but I think to me that just says like, sometimes we think it
27:39
should be easy.
27:40
Sometimes we think like, okay, I read the Bible to my kid, he's going to he's going
27:44
to be saved.
27:45
Or I'm a Christian, so my kids are Christians, it's just not how it works.
27:49
There's work that has to be done back to Nehemiah, like there's work that must be done for the
27:54
kingdom.
27:55
Yeah, and there's there's no, there's nothing that I can say to any of my children to change
28:00
their heart.
28:01
It just does not happen.
28:02
Now I can coerce them, I can threaten them into obedience, but am I going to change their
28:09
heart?
28:10
I'm not the Holy Spirit does that.
28:12
Jesus does that.
28:14
So we have lots of little tiny conversations, not big lectures and threats in our house
28:21
for that reason.
28:22
Can I actually ask a question on that?
28:23
So let's just say that one of your kids was, you know, had been getting in trouble or something
28:29
like that.
28:30
And some, some things were not really going the way that you and your wife would want.
28:33
So how, I guess, do you influence the process of pointing them towards Christ, pointing them
28:42
towards the, the truth of scripture?
28:45
If indeed what you just said is true, which is like, Hey, I can't do this for them.
28:49
I can't make them listen to me that type of thing.
28:51
Like, how do you lovingly nudge or upwards of kicking them in the rear ends to push them
28:57
towards that end?
28:58
Does that make sense?
28:59
Yeah, of course.
29:00
So you have to come back to scripture, you know, so, you know, Paul David trip, I don't
29:04
know all his little steps or whatever you can't remember him, but, you know, it's a lot of
29:07
it's about revealing their heart to them.
29:09
So you just walk them down a path to reveal their heart to them, you know, asking questions
29:14
like, well, what was your, what were you thinking?
29:16
Like, what was your motivation in this moment?
29:19
And then what was the result of this?
29:23
You're getting them to answer those questions.
29:24
And then putting scripture alongside of that, as opposed to, well, I said so, you shouldn't
29:32
do that.
29:33
You know, it's not has nothing to do with me as everything to do with the truth.
29:35
So in a very short, concise way, that's, that's how I handle that.
29:39
Okay.
29:40
Cause that's, you know, I've got a three year old and one year old.
29:42
So we're just doing great when they don't crap themselves, you know, kind of a situation.
29:46
And so it's like, you know, I haven't had to deal with that much because they're so everything.
29:50
So rudimentary still.
29:51
Yeah, yeah, and, and, and I think clear expectations have to be set.
29:55
I mean, there are, it's not like we don't punish.
29:57
I mean, we, of course, we'll punish, um, but expectations for, um, different offenses
30:02
should need to be laid out.
30:04
And we've probably talked about that before, but so it becomes more black and white rather
30:08
than having to be emotional, um, in the moment, we can have those discussions and then enact
30:13
some sort of punishment that needs to, if it needs to be enacted.
30:16
So.
30:17
Okay.
30:18
Very good.
30:19
I'm glad you were able to go into a little bit more detail there.
30:20
But the reason why I really like versus 18 and 19 is because they're not really talked about
30:26
in this context very much and perhaps you'll have a different opinion, but I've obviously
30:31
gotten into discussions and debates with people that think outright Christians drinking alcohol
30:36
at all is sinful.
30:38
So there's kind of like three categories.
30:39
There's people that think it's sinful, no matter what, you should never do it.
30:42
There's people that are like, yeah, it doesn't matter.
30:43
It's no big deal.
30:44
And then there's people that are like, well, you know, it's okay, but I'm not going to do
30:48
it.
30:49
Like I'm choosing not to do it.
30:50
But does this 18 and 19 not just write out proof that Jesus drank alcohol?
30:57
Because the context here is for John came neither eating nor drinking and they said he
31:00
has a demon.
31:01
The son of man came eating and drinking and they said, look at him, a glutton and a drunkard.
31:07
Just the use of the word drunkard there would point back to the word drinking and say that
31:11
they weren't talking about water or Shasta or anything like that.
31:15
And so I think that whenever you see Jesus at these wedding celebrations, when you see
31:21
him, you know, just comporting himself in the community as any normal, you know, Jew would
31:25
at that time.
31:26
And then this scripture here would show that, yeah, Jesus drank alcohol, which I think would
31:30
be appalling to admit for a lot of, you know, Southern Baptist or church Christ folks or,
31:37
you know, whatever the denomination that's just like, Oh, this would never ever happen
31:40
in a million years.
31:41
It was grape juice.
31:42
It was great.
31:43
There we go, fermented grape juice.
31:46
I look at this and look at the Pharisees and Sadducees and what they're doing right now.
31:51
They're like condemning John for a simplistic lifestyle and then saying that he's got a
31:56
demon in them because he's so simple, but then they want to say Christ who's going out there
32:01
among the crowds eating and drinking is excessive, you know, and so they can't, they're trying
32:06
to find a way to demonize the ministry, which kind of goes back to the beginning of this
32:10
verse and 12 and through 13 where talk of man waging violence on the Lord's truth.
32:18
And that's the thing.
32:19
They're trying to take the message of God's truth that Christ is bringing and they're
32:23
trying to manipulate it and say that these two guys are simple or excessive.
32:27
So yeah, Jesus drink alcohol.
32:28
Jesus, I'm sure he drank wine, but I'm pretty sure almost a hundred percent sure he never
32:34
got drunk.
32:35
Almost 100% sure.
32:36
I am 100% sure.
32:37
There it is.
32:38
Jesus never got drunk, people are going to key in on that.
32:41
So I just did you decide.
32:42
I know.
32:43
There's a sound by you.
32:44
Cue the comments.
32:45
Ryan.
32:46
Jesus 100% never got drunk.
32:47
Tighten down that double.
32:48
They've made up their mind, right?
32:50
Like they're nitpicking at this point.
32:51
Like they're they're finding fault because they want to find fault.
32:55
So because John was sure they're going to call him out for that and Jesus was drinking
32:59
and hanging out with people.
33:00
They're going to call him out for that.
33:01
So they've they've made up their mind in a sense.
33:03
They're going to nitpick whatever.
33:04
But one thing I like to point out too is like look how the people who look how look
33:09
how the Pharisees and Sadducees are using this and Jesus is what they call excessive
33:13
lifestyle with people outside of what the Jewish Pharisees and Sadducees would think
33:18
would be good people.
33:19
So he's hanging out with prostitutes, probably tax collectors and he's ministering to them.
33:25
Look at what we're doing nowadays with that.
33:27
I just heard a guy talk about, you know, Christianity and Jesus are going to die because what Jesus
33:33
did is he went and hung out with the prostitutes.
33:35
He went and hung out with the tax collectors.
33:37
And even with the the prostitute, he said he who casts the first stone, you know, he's
33:42
calling those people out, but they always never follow up with go and send no more.
33:47
And so we see the Pharisees and Sadducees using this to manipulate their thinking.
33:52
We're seeing that today in modern church on how we want to they want to manipulate the
33:57
culture and manipulate the church within the culture.
34:00
So it's kind of funny seeing the characteristics of this and it's still happening today.
34:05
Let me go back to your your question about specifically about drinking and I'll kind
34:09
of give a personal note on this.
34:11
So when the craft beer stuff started kind of happening in our in our area, I want, you
34:17
know, I've got to kind of had a couple friends that were like kind of getting into that.
34:21
And so we would try different beers together and kind of get into this habit of and not
34:25
it wasn't every day, but I would come home and have a beer and and most of those beers
34:29
were not two point five percent alcohol, you know, it was it was more than that.
34:34
I got convicted after I read a read a book by Watchman knee that has section on that.
34:40
And honestly, when I read that section about drinking, it was just a story.
34:46
I was I was like, that's kind of stupid.
34:48
But then as I was working on some of the things I do, I'm necessarily on the side, I was realizing
34:55
that I was sitting here with a beer trying to be focused on what I need to do.
35:00
And I didn't feel like I was 100% there.
35:03
I felt like if I was doing God's work and wanting to do it well, that I could not be
35:07
impaired, not even the least bit, not 10%, not 1%, whatever.
35:11
And so I felt convicted that I needed to let that go.
35:13
That was on a just on a personal level.
35:17
And I and I guess you guys were kind of eluding this earlier, but I don't get the impression
35:21
that the alcohol that was drunk in this day was anywhere near the level or intensity that
35:27
is produced today.
35:30
So I do think it probably would have taken a lot of glasses of that wine cups of wine
35:34
to get someone drunk.
35:35
So when and we know that people did have that much because of drunkenness talked about so
35:40
much throughout scripture, when people say that, and I know you're not doing this, but
35:44
I have heard people say that before as like, that's their slam dunk argument.
35:48
Well, that alcohol back then had this much percentage alcohol and you're drinking whiskey
35:52
that has like 55% alcohol and all those types of things.
35:56
It's like, okay, that means we need to be more careful of the lines between sobriety and
36:01
drunkenness and modernity because the alcohol that we would consume that we would buy from
36:06
liquor store or grocery store is going to be more dangerous.
36:10
And so it's the same thing like with any other sin that you could pick, like they didn't
36:17
have pornography back in this day, where they didn't have smartphones.
36:20
They didn't have, you know, watches where people could literally watch porn or look at
36:23
pornographic stuff on them at all times.
36:26
So that just means we need to be more careful, right?
36:29
Because the sins are the same, the tactics are different, right, or the means by which
36:33
the tactics are carried out are very, very different.
36:36
And I want to be very careful here because obviously people might be like, Oh, well,
36:38
Carl St. Jesus drink.
36:40
So everyone needs a drink.
36:42
Obviously not.
36:43
I don't think anybody at this table would say that because everyone has a predisposition
36:46
to a sin.
36:48
So as I've talked about before, my predisposition is to acting out sexually.
36:51
So you know, having to get a handle on looking at porn and masturbating and, you know, checking
36:56
out women, that's the fight that I have to constantly fight.
36:59
I've never had a chemical like bend or I've never been like, Oh man, I can't really stop
37:04
gambling, but everyone has their own.
37:06
So if you have that chemical bend, I'm thinking of a few guys I know right now, they're doing
37:11
what they need to to make sure that that is never a problem for them and their families
37:14
ever again.
37:15
There's the attention there, right?
37:16
Like there's these tensions in the Bible.
37:18
There's the legalism versus the anti-nomianism where it's like, okay, you can't drink it
37:22
all because you're, you're a sinner if you drink or well, Jesus drank.
37:28
So everything's fine.
37:30
Anything, whether good or bad can become an idol.
37:35
Yep.
37:36
And I think that's the important thing to take away is like some people might have not have
37:40
a problem with, with drinking, but as Paul says, and I don't know which letter it is.
37:45
Sorry, Joby.
37:47
He talks about like, if that's going to cause somebody else to stumble, you should probably
37:52
just not do that around them.
37:54
And at which point, so with that, there's the practical side of, okay, should we not
37:59
ever eat around fat people?
38:00
And so it's just like, you could, you could take that to like extreme degrees because
38:04
it's like, okay, well, you're allowing them to feed their gluttonous desires.
38:08
It's like, no, no, I was just eating my own food, like it's just being smart.
38:12
Like I've had a couple of fellow employees that I work with that are recovering alcoholics
38:16
and we'll drink and, but when I go out with them one on one, I'll ask them, Hey, is this
38:21
a problem for you?
38:22
Yeah.
38:23
And if it's a problem for them and it's going to make them stumble, I'm going to have a
38:26
glass of water or a nice tea.
38:28
I'm not going to have that whiskey, you know, because I don't want to cause them to stumble.
38:32
I want to be there and to cheer them on.
38:34
So it's just, it's just like with anything, like with drinking or whatever, just be smart.
38:39
The creator of the universe gave us common sense.
38:42
Yeah.
38:43
We have common sense.
38:44
And he also gave us alcohol as a social lubricant as, as something to see his greatness because
38:48
we have taste buds that can perceive those things and enjoy those things.
38:53
It's a convenient grace.
38:54
Is that what that would be called?
38:55
I don't know.
38:56
I gotta walk around with it.
38:57
Whatever.
38:58
I'm hanging out with you.
38:59
One thing I want to say about this, like when you say seeing God's glory in this stuff,
39:03
got to watch out for the mysticism.
39:05
You see God's glory when you drink whiskey because you're getting the flavors.
39:09
You're getting something that's, that's, you know, tasteful.
39:13
Some people will tell you doing mushrooms will bring you, you know, God's glory or bring
39:18
you like to another step with God.
39:20
Got to watch that stuff.
39:21
I don't see any defense from scripture of doing magic mushrooms, but I've heard people
39:28
say I've gotten so close to God by doing mushrooms.
39:30
Speaking of, speaking of mushrooms, Jesus right here, guys, not is not the fun guy that
39:35
everybody like always wants to talk about him, he's getting some, he's getting pretty
39:39
heated here.
39:40
Don't do that.
39:41
Don't do magic mushrooms.
39:42
Well, guys, we've made it all the way here to this exact moment.
39:45
Ryan, this is your time to shine.
39:47
I need you to read 20 through 24.
39:50
There are hard things to pronounce here.
39:52
Some of them, I'm not even sure how they're pronounced.
39:53
So, but everybody get ready with your sorry, Joby buzzers.
39:57
Ready?
39:58
Set.
39:59
Go.
40:00
Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works have been done because
40:03
he did not repent.
40:05
Whoa to you, core is in.
40:08
We'll take it.
40:09
Whoa to you.
40:10
Bethsaida.
40:11
Ooh, nailed it.
40:12
Or if the mighty works done in you had been done in tear.
40:16
Or.
40:17
No, no, no, nope, nope, I've looked that up and it is pronounced T.A.I. dash.
40:23
You are.
40:24
Let's have some, let's have some reverence for the word of God.
40:26
Let him, let him go.
40:27
All the way higher.
40:28
Okay.
40:29
Tear, tire, you could use it depends on, you know, how you, yeah.
40:34
This is my day.
40:35
I just got a scarf.
40:36
Keep going.
40:37
Keep going.
40:38
I hate you guys.
40:39
But I love you.
40:40
At the same time.
40:41
Um.
40:42
All right.
40:43
Twin truce.
40:44
So for if the mighty works done in you, oh, okay, mighty works done in you had been done
40:49
in tear, tire or say, sorry, I couldn't help it.
40:55
Or Satan, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
41:00
But I tell you, it will be more bearable.
41:03
The day of judgment for tire and Satan than for you and you, Capernaum, will be exalted
41:11
to heaven.
41:12
You will be brought down to Hades.
41:13
Keep going.
41:14
They're 24.
41:15
I know.
41:16
For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until
41:21
this day, but I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land
41:25
of Sodom than for you.
41:28
So I got to tell you, as I was reading through this, because obviously everyone knows Sodom
41:31
and Gomorrah.
41:32
Those were hard, man.
41:33
I put you.
41:34
I put you on skates on ice.
41:35
It's how it goes.
41:37
Um, it immediately made me think of the forthcoming judgment for major cities around
41:43
the globe.
41:45
Like that's what this immediately made me think of because we don't, we don't really
41:48
know what it was like to be in, you know, Capernaum or, you know, Sodom and Gomorrah.
41:52
We don't really know any of that.
41:54
But we do have an idea of, you know, New York City, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Paris,
41:59
Amsterdam, Shanghai, Pyongyang, Tehran, Moscow, cartoon, Mexico City, Kabul, Ottawa, Palestine.
42:07
Like there are plenty of places around the globe, some that I've seen with my own eyes
42:10
and seen the depravity in those, those cities, those cities are not outside of the purview
42:15
of God's judgment.
42:17
And that was just something that just really smacked me inside the head when I read this
42:20
for the first time this week.
42:22
I was thinking about just some, someone could walk around with cancer and not know it, right?
42:28
And they don't know it until they have a scan and the doctor says, you've got cancer.
42:34
And, and so when they receive that information, they have a response, they should have a response.
42:41
Nobody that I know of would just ignore that and just go on with their life.
42:46
And so when I was reading this, I was like, well, each of these cities have had opportunities,
42:51
each of us around the globe today have had opportunities to hear the word of God.
42:59
There must be a response to that.
43:02
And so it's almost like the level of truth delivered to you results in a potential greater
43:10
punishment if you disobey or ignore that.
43:12
That's how I read that.
43:13
What are your thoughts?
43:14
Well, I, the key word that sticks out to me in this passage is repent and Jesus calling
43:20
for repentance.
43:21
Which was his default sermon, like he went and proclaimed the kingdom of heaven, because
43:26
the kingdom of heaven is here and not repenting and Jesus specifically calling cities and people
43:35
out for not repenting should give us pause and should convict us to look inward.
43:43
Like Browning is saying, like, if somebody calls something out at me, I should take a
43:49
moment to really think about that.
43:52
And if I don't and I don't repent, what is, what are the consequences for that?
43:56
I think it's crazy that you bring up repentance because that's exactly what I got from this
43:59
is Jesus denounced the cities for being unrepentant.
44:03
And then he basically backhanded them because he brings in Tyre and Satan who are Gentile
44:10
cities.
44:11
So Gentiles to the Jews are like, they're already going to hell.
44:15
Like there's nothing that's ever going to save them, you know?
44:18
So he's like backhanded them with that saying, they'll believe, why won't you believe?
44:23
And it's right here in front of you.
44:24
I love this because it's not this blonde haired, like flowing locks, Jesus that everybody likes
44:29
to talk about.
44:30
Walking through a hand in peanuts to the homeless, you know, it's just like, no, he's denouncing
44:34
he's denouncing the unrepentant.
44:36
And I think that's like, like, if we look at it, like he's going to these cities and he's
44:40
saying repent and believe, like, believe, like he's not changing his message.
44:45
He's like, well, I want to get more people, so I'm going to go start changing my message
44:48
as I go to these other cities.
44:49
No, his message is the same.
44:52
And it takes people to believe they're either going to believe or they're not on the steps
44:56
to get to him and to accept that are always the same.
44:59
Yeah.
45:00
Like it's believe in her pet.
45:01
You know, that like it's the same steps regardless of the circumstances.
45:04
But also, I mean, so this goes back to, you know, verse 11 and 12 where it's like, you
45:08
know, you could be the greatest man born of woman, but if you don't have me, you have
45:11
nothing, and then at the very end, he's basically saying that it is worse for Capernaum because
45:18
they've rejected the son of God than it was for the highest example of complete debauchery
45:24
we've ever seen, Sodom, right?
45:27
Like there's not a city like what.
45:29
So for Amsterdam to be considered in the same thing, the entire city of Amsterdam would need
45:33
to be the red light district, then it would be sort of like Sodom.
45:37
Okay.
45:38
So basically he's saying like you could have a city that's somewhere between where you
45:44
are and Sodom, and it still doesn't matter.
45:47
It is worse for the city of Capernaum to have rejected me.
45:50
And it's just like, that doesn't sound very nice because they know.
45:54
And that's the thing.
45:55
Like we had an argument via text back and forth over a music group playing with another music
46:01
group that we know that pretend to be crit, like you don't have to be cagey.
46:05
All right, if Shane and Shane playing with Bethel, you know, here's the thing.
46:10
Shane and Shane should know, they know what the truth is.
46:14
They know what the gospel is and they, they, and they should know that Bethel is twisting
46:20
that gospel.
46:22
There's a difference in playing with somebody that you know can twist the gospel and playing
46:26
with somebody you know that's like a Sodom who doesn't even know what they're, they don't
46:30
even know anything about Christ, they don't even know anything about the gospel.
46:33
But to hit your wagon to somebody who does and who twists it on purpose, like that's
46:37
where you have to kind of take the step back and say, Hey, am I going to perfect shine
46:41
a light on this?
46:42
Or am I just going to go ahead and just let it happen?
46:44
Let me actually take a step back.
46:45
So if some people in the audience have no idea what we're even talking about, but months
46:48
and months and months ago, it was announced that there was going to be a kind of Christian,
46:52
you know, one day festival at Red Rocks in Colorado.
46:56
And you know, announced was, you know, Shane and Shane, Phil Wickham, I can't really remember
47:00
anybody else, and then it was the two people that used to or still lead worship at Bethel.
47:05
And so where you were and where a lot of, you know, people that are on your side, words
47:09
like Shane and Shane should never have even signed on to do that event, knowing that they're
47:13
going to be on the same stage as somebody that doesn't believe what they believe theologically.
47:17
And so where I came from, and we're, we're not going to, you know, pull off the scab on
47:21
on the debate here.
47:22
But where I came from is like, this is a one day festival.
47:25
Like they could have been booked before these other people were booked, sharing the stage
47:29
with somebody doesn't mean that you co-sign every message that they could possibly give.
47:33
And I also said that if Shane and Shane were invited to go play a show with ghost, slayer,
47:39
behemoth, and guar in the most satanic bands on the planet and they were asked to open
47:44
up for them, I would say absolutely 100% every single time you get the invitation to it.
47:48
I would agree with you.
47:49
You wouldn't agree with me.
47:50
I would agree.
47:51
You would agree.
47:52
So, but, but to your point, like it's, we'll actually make your point.
47:55
My point is, my point is, is like guar, those bands that you brought up are like sawed them.
48:01
So trying to go in there and trying to portray the message of the gospel makes sense.
48:06
But hitching yourself to Capernaum who knows the truth, but chooses not to be the light
48:12
of it or chooses to twist it, you've got, you've got to make some better decisions there.
48:17
You've got to, we've got to think of this as more of a Hey, we're brothers and sisters.
48:22
It's like, not necessarily, you know, where there's a true gospel and some are twisting
48:28
it and some are not.
48:29
Are they truly brothers and sisters?
48:30
And I think if this were a Bethel event put on by Bethel and they invited chain and chain,
48:35
there would have probably been something different as opposed to, you know, that, but, but again,
48:40
it's go ahead.
48:41
There's some gray area, I think, and I, you know, I can see both sides of that argument.
48:46
Like no one knows Shane and Shane's heart, but them and God.
48:49
Yeah.
48:50
But one can't say hitch.
48:53
Oh, you can play the on hitch when I work, can't say that.
48:57
Um, you know, my case, you lost your point.
49:01
Did you lose an entire point?
49:02
Can I use an unconditional, unconditional love for Shane and Shane?
49:06
We still listen to them on Sundays.
49:07
You can't do so.
49:08
No, I remember what I was going to say.
49:09
So in my, in my commentary, I'm using the MacArthur, um, uh, Bible study Bible commentary.
49:16
It says that Jesus had chosen like they, Capernaum received a harsher like rebuke because Jesus
49:23
had chosen that as his headquarters.
49:25
So they should know better and they should know and they, there should be a response and
49:30
they are seeing all these great deeds that he is doing in the city.
49:34
And what, what a stark point to make that if Sodom and Gomorrah had seen the works that
49:40
he had done or that had been done in Capernaum that Sodom and Gomorrah would still be here.
49:47
Man, if that, if that doesn't give you shivers living in Capernaum or now, like, man, I don't
49:53
know what, what to tell you.
49:56
Well, those were strong, uh, cities with a lot of money flowing through it and a lot
49:59
of, you know, a lot of populace and, you know, then that's where it ends up for them.
50:04
And you know, we're even at this point now where it's hard to even determine where they
50:07
were on the map because they were so, you know, completely wiped out.
50:10
Matt, let's hit this last section here.
50:12
So let's wrap up Matthew 11 with 25 through 30 got it.
50:18
At that time, Jesus declared, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you
50:22
have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little
50:26
children.
50:27
Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
50:30
All things have been handed over to me by my father and no one knows the son except the
50:35
father and no one knows the father except the son and anyone to whom the son chooses
50:39
to reveal him.
50:41
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
50:46
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, or I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will
50:51
find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
50:57
Don't worry, Theo bros.
50:58
We'll get back to verse 27, but, um, I want to talk about, um, 28 and 29.
51:04
I mean, obviously, verse 28, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will
51:07
give you rest.
51:08
Is there a better comfort verse in the Bible?
51:11
I mean, I just, as I read that, it's like that, that is just, I can't imagine a single
51:17
verse in context that speaks in the same way that that one does.
51:21
It is just, it is overwhelming and it's in its comfort because again, they're talking
51:26
about the yoke, which by the way, here's for anyone that thinks like I'm a smart guy.
51:30
I was, uh, somewhere around this year, years old where I saw where it was my yoke is easy.
51:36
I used to talk.
51:37
I used to think they were talking about yolk, like egg yolk, right?
51:40
And don't be unequally yoked, right?
51:43
And it's yoke.
51:44
Anyway, so right.
51:46
So slightly embarrassing.
51:47
All right.
51:48
That, that's what happens when you try to read too fast and your brain doesn't work that
51:51
right.
51:52
No, that, that's like so bad.
51:53
I'm going to have to call him personally after we're done recording just to apologize
51:57
for that.
51:58
I mean, I come back.
51:59
It may be just you three on the next episode, but that's the thing is, you know, his, the
52:04
law, which was, you know, that was a common metaphor.
52:07
Yoke was a common metaphor for the law and inside of the context of Judaism.
52:11
And it was whenever the, it became like slavery, like the, the law became slavery because of
52:16
how the, the elites, the, the religious leads that day treated it.
52:20
So y'all's thoughts on, on versus 28, 29, 30.
52:24
I've read a book by John Eldridge called get your life back, I can't remember when that
52:29
came out, but I really enjoyed that book just because it was so different than other things
52:35
I've read by him.
52:36
And he had something called, that he called the one minute pause and if you download the
52:39
app, it's got one, three, five, 10, whatever 15 minute pauses, but it was just this opportunity
52:45
to be able to slow down and, you know, he, he takes you through this whole kind of, you
52:49
just have to get rid of it, not getting rid of thoughts, don't get me wrong, but taking,
52:56
taking and laying down your anxieties before, for God.
52:58
And every time I've done that, it's been so good, just to quiet my soul just for that
53:04
minute or three minutes or five minutes, whatever.
53:07
But I remember he, he, he coached you through, he says, I give everything and everyone to
53:11
you, Jesus, I want to be in union with you alone.
53:15
The way I'm just interpreting this is, there's just, this is this idea that I need to exchange
53:22
the rule of man for being ruled by the Messiah, because I know that the end that there's hope
53:27
and deliverance.
53:28
I need to exchange working for the man for living for the man, because in that there's
53:36
satisfaction and, and then personally just because, and I'm sure we're all the same in
53:42
different levels in a different times, there's just so much going on in life, that it's so
53:46
easy to be distracted and pulled away from what's most important, and those anxieties
53:51
can start to pile up on us.
53:53
And when they do, they can, it starts to feel like a heavy yolk and it's not the heavy yolk
53:59
of Christ.
54:00
Christ is gentle and lonely, it's totally different.
54:03
So anyways, I'm not trying to plug that book, but it was a very, very good book that really
54:08
gave me a new perspective on how to rest in him.
54:10
John Eldridge is good, he understands a lot of that stuff, so I'd love to read that,
54:14
that's a good recommendation.
54:16
Obviously to me, this is, this isn't my thought either, this is talking about justification,
54:21
right?
54:22
We are justified, so there's nothing that we do to receive justification, but I'm reminded
54:27
of a story that my Sunday school teacher was talking through, when talking about justification
54:33
and how we can view justification by the works, and he told this story of this Greek, this
54:42
Greek myth, this, this person called Cefarian, and he was his punishment, and I don't remember
54:49
what he, what he did to receive punishment, but that's not the point.
54:52
The point is that he was punished, and his punishment was rolling this heavy boulder up
54:56
to the top of a hill, and then just when he was about to reach to the top of the hill,
55:01
the day would be over, and he'd almost get there, and the boulder would roll down to the
55:06
bottom of the hill, and he'd have to start all over.
55:09
And his point, my Sunday school teacher's point was that is what legalism and trying
55:14
to justify ourselves can be like, we feel like we almost get there, and then the boulder
55:20
falls down, and that's really hard, and it's really stressful, and we can put, we can put
55:24
a very heavy, unsustainable burden on ourselves, and Jesus is saying it's not hard.
55:32
Like, justification is yours, you need only me, and we should be preaching that to ourselves
55:39
constantly, because we live in a society where, like, check in the box, like, do this, do
55:44
this, do this, these things reward you, and these things are going to get you, and there
55:50
are religions that teach that, there are sections inside of Christianity that teach that, and
55:56
so, yeah, to back to Kyle's point, what great news and comforting news that is.
56:02
And I hear you on the, I see grace in this, but then it's also like, I see the legalistic
56:07
point in how, if we look at the Pharisees and Sadducees back in this day, I mean, there
56:12
was laws that were set in place, but they were adding to it.
56:15
They were making that yoke harder and harder and harder, and they're actually kind of building
56:18
it towards themselves, but a quote by Spurgeon really stuck out to me.
56:22
Sorry.
56:23
This is a Spurgeon.
56:24
I mean, don't apologize.
56:25
I don't think you ever have to apologize for quoting Spurgeon.
56:28
So if we were to bear no burdens, but his burdens and do no service, but his service, then we
56:34
shall find that his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
56:37
May God and the Holy Ghost lead us into that kind of life, and then indeed shall we truly
56:42
be happy.
56:43
So we're talking about legalism here and I feel like this can get this verse can move
56:49
in our modern day culture down a different path.
56:52
And so that's where it comes down to my burdens are Christ burden.
56:56
My service is Christ service.
56:57
And so Christ still upheld the law.
57:00
He didn't hitch, unhitch it.
57:03
He upheld it.
57:04
You can say unhitch.
57:05
You just can't say hitched.
57:06
Yeah.
57:07
So he didn't hitch it.
57:08
He held it and he did it perfectly.
57:11
And so we have grace through him, but he also gave us a design of service and what we should
57:16
do and what we should not do and we need to follow that.
57:19
And that's where we're going to find true happiness is following his way.
57:23
So we're kind of rounding to a close here.
57:26
So I want to, I want to be fair to the text, but you know, we will have to kind of leave
57:29
it there at some point, but I was reading the MacArthur commentary, which do you know
57:34
if the MacArthur commentary is the same as it is in the study Bible or is it similar?
57:38
I think a lot of the things are similar.
57:40
I think the commentary that you have is a lot is a lot deeper and a lot more notes than
57:44
this.
57:45
Okay.
57:46
So that this reminded me of another of another Spurgeon quote where he was basically talking
57:49
about how do you, you'll probably have that memorize you dorks, but it's just like, you
57:53
know, where it's like, okay, there's that tension or that dissonance or that dichotomy
57:57
between, you know, God's sovereignty and election and also your free will and what you're required
58:03
to do.
58:06
I love that.
58:07
That's my favorite quote.
58:08
So someone may actually need to bring that up.
58:10
Maybe we'll close with that.
58:11
So Matt, you got it.
58:12
But it was basically verse 27, where it talks about, you know, to anyone who the son chooses
58:17
to reveal him.
58:18
That's where election people are like, yeah, they're, they're all like, you know, super
58:21
excited.
58:22
They turn into an eggplant.
58:23
And then yeah, versus 28 and 29, which that's the call for, you know, the free offer to
58:28
all.
58:29
So versus 20, 29, or yeah, 28 and 29 is like, that's where it's like, that's your dichotomy
58:35
there to where it's like, there's the election, the sovereignty side of it.
58:38
But it's like verse 27.
58:39
And somehow that also, you know, coincides with the free offer that you have to accept
58:44
that we see in verses 28 and 29.
58:47
And so it's, doesn't make any sense.
58:49
It doesn't, you know, check the, the intellectual boxes that it should, but Browning hop in.
58:53
Ah, give it just a thought, you know, we see all these and it'll continue on.
58:58
So this maybe is just another layer.
59:01
But we see that Jesus is healing those who have faith, but he then appears to not heal
59:07
people that don't have faith and we'll, we'll see it again in several chapters with Peter,
59:13
walking on the water and whatnot.
59:14
So I'm curious on that as well.
59:17
Go.
59:18
We're going to get into parables and parables, either people are going to understand them.
59:22
God's going to give them insight or they're not going to get insight to hear the message.
59:26
So that's thing that we're going to have to look at, but we'll also get into the unforgivable
59:30
sin and coming up to as well.
59:33
And that's me as a Calvinist as a kind of made me think things through and try to think
59:39
things in a different light.
59:40
So I'm trying to understand that as we go along.
59:42
But I mean, I hear you on, on where you're coming from.
59:45
So I think when we dive deeper, we'll be able to do it.
59:48
Well, Matt, let's wrap up with that quote from Spurgeon.
59:51
So the spurge says that God predestines and that man is responsible are two things that
59:56
few can see.
59:57
They are believed to be inconsistent and contradictory, but they are not.
1:00:00
It is just the fault of our weak judgment.
1:00:03
Two truths cannot be contradictory to each other.
1:00:06
If then I find taught in one place that everything is foreordained, that is true.
1:00:10
And if I find in another place that man is responsible for all his actions, that is true.
1:00:15
And it is my folly that leads me to imagine that two truths can never contradict each other.
1:00:21
These two truths I do not believe can ever be wielded into one upon any human anvil.
1:00:26
But one, they shall be in eternity, they are two lines that are so nearly parallel that
1:00:31
the mind that shall pursue them farthest will never discover that they converge, but they
1:00:35
do converge and they will meet somewhere in eternity close to the throne of God.
1:00:40
When's all truth?
1:00:41
Doth spring.
1:00:42
And there's more to be said, but we're going to have to leave it there.
1:00:44
But come back here next Sunday where we are going to dig into Matthew 12.
1:00:47
So make sure you're red up through there.
1:00:49
So you're prepared for next week.
1:00:51
But before we let you go, we are going to do a quick resilience boost.

All that is here in the show notes.
1:01:07
And then also I've got a link to our donation page guys, we can't do the forging table.
1:01:11
We can't do any of the stuff that you guys have grown to love in order to help equipment
