The small word there is finally revealed as Egypt to Jacob, where the family will grow into a nation. This shows that despite the negative experience that they will have in Egypt, God is working out his plan there.

Just as Joseph was enslaved and imprisoned in Egypt, so that God would use him effectively in bringing blessing to the world so Israel will grow into God's people in Egypt.

The other thing is this is the first time that so there were God himself calls himself God to Jacob the first time here. He's referred to himself as Yahweh, El Bethel, El Shaddai, but this is the first time that he's revealing himself really as the God of his father.

That's the first time that this is actually happening. I think the other thing is think about the act of faith that it took for Jacob to load up everybody. They didn't leave one person behind.

Nobody there to defend the land. It's a true act of faith that you are just going to completely leave and it will be ready for you when you return or when the people return.

That's the end of Genesis 46. He had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to show the way before him in Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen. Then Joseph prepared his chariot and went up to meet Israel, his father in Goshen.

And when you're gone on deployment, and then you come home, when you see your family, especially when you see these videos of people that are surprising their families, because we were part of a surprise for your kids whenever you came back from a deployment years ago, what do you say?

Absolutely. And then we see here in verses 32 through 34, you know, saying like, Hey, say your occupation is shepherd because shepherds at this time were lowly.

All right, so this is pre Jesus, but obviously even at that time when you get to David, David was a shepherd and then, you know, Jesus, you know, was the ultimate shepherd.

But so when you say this, Pharaoh had to always constantly be worried about threats to his power and threats to his throne.

But when you say like, Hey, my brothers who you are helping out in such a tremendous way and, you know, loving on them because, you know, I, you know, loved on you and your kingdom.

It's like, yeah, these people aren't coming for your power, right? Has there been a rebellion in history where I was a bunch of shepherds that got together and overthrew a king or a Pharaoh or something like that.

But like a situation like this point being, but that's why Joseph had to be sure his brothers had changed.

You know, because not only was he going to hurt like where Joseph sat again, he would hurt the lifeline of Israel.

So when he first came on the scene, his mom was his manager.

I mean, the drama of Jacob, Israel before Pharaoh, right?

Again, this is, I think we've all kind of introduced people to our bosses, right?

And somehow in our life, like I am working it out back steakhouse at 16 and my mom comes in.

I'm like, oh, I did get the proprietor over to come say hi to my mom and sister or something like that.

And so it's, but it's so much more than that, right?

And the first thing that Jacob Israel does is bless his Pharaoh.

And again, when you, every time I hear the word Pharaoh, I think of like the Exodus and things like that.

And you're thinking about this hardened, hard and just this, this incredibly brutal dictator.

But it's like, and he seems like a benevolent leader that just had so much respect for Joseph.

I think it's like when you look at the contrast between you've got Pharaoh, this stoic individual leader.

And now you've got this old dude, like, you know, who's a shepherd, who's probably dressed in rags

and probably hunched over because he's a hundred years old.

But I can only imagine Joseph just like being an awe and so proud to see his father, you know, up there.

And being the man who was just about what Jacob has done in his life.

And so, and then the fact that he, Jacob blesses Pharaoh, you know, which is probably, you know, you know,

the fact that Pharaoh takes a blessing, I think is probably something huge.

And the fact that, I mean, he's Pharaoh. I mean, people didn't even look at him, you know, as you were saying that.

I was struck by something that happened. This was after Kelsey and I got married.

We did a destination wedding. So we got married Jamaica without any friends or family there.

And then we came back and did a little, like ceremony or whatever showed the video of the wedding and did all the things, right?

Well, my dad, I believe this is all true. He was sitting at a table with Dr. Dwight Adams.

So if you don't know that name, he was the first scientist that testified in court using DNA evidence, okay?

For the priest had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and lived on the allowance that Pharaoh

So Joseph made it a statue concerning the land of Egypt and it stands to this day that

Pharaoh should have the fifth, the land of the priest alone, did not become Pharaohs.

This Israel settled in the land of Egypt and the land of Goshen and they gained possessions

in it and were fruitful and multiplied greatly.

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt 17 years.

So the days of Jacob, the years of his life were 147.

And when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called the son Joseph and said to

So that comes the conclusion of the story of Jacob, Israel.

And yeah, so there are some interesting details there about about this famine and kind of

what they were able to do really, I don't say this is a negative way to take advantage

of the situation to make sure that there was benefit for both sides, benefit for Pharaoh's

house, benefit for the kingdom and all that.

And so people wouldn't absolutely start of death, but obviously there was there was a

benefit to the Egyptian side to Pharaoh and his side.

And then we see, you know, this is a culmination of Jacob's life and we see the promise fulfilled

that, you know, Joseph would be there at the end of Jacob's time.

So quite a bit there, but let's wrap up our discussion of 46 and 47 here.

Well, I'll start with, so you kind of documenting the sequence of events of how the people were

impoverished by the famine.

So first they sold, they spent all their money buying their food, then they traded away their

livestock.

Finally, they gave up their land and then worked as tenant farmers.

Their rent for that land was 20% of the outputs paid one fifth to Pharaoh.

That's a lower than normal percent in the ancient world.

This was a progressive tax and that it was proportioned according to the income that they

produced.

Theoretically then a prosperous farmer could have rebuilt his wealth when the famine ended,

though it is not clear whether he would have been allowed to buy back the land.

That would be a question.

This turned Egypt into a state in which all the wealth was centralized in the government.

The pre shared in the centralization of wealth since they were subsidized by the government.

This was the common practice in Egypt and led to significant wealth and therefore political

power being attached to long standing priestly families.

Just bring all that up to kind of just say, fast forward, go look at Exodus and see what

a centralization of power and wealth can do according to what kind of power that can bring,

but also the oppression that it actually can bring as well.

When people start talking, again, it's like, okay, well it worked here, but they had a

benevolent Joseph who in a Pharaoh that very much trusted Joseph to carry out what he deemed

to be appropriate.

That is not the case 400 years later.

You have a very oppressive regime and again, what can they do about it?
