So we've been following Jacob and Isaac and Esau and a bunch of stuff going on. Rebecca,

Jacob's sending being sent to Laban. So we're in Genesis 28. Read the first nine verses, please.

First nine. Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him. You must not take a wife

from the Canaanite women, arise, go to pattern around to the house of Bethel, your mother's father,

and take as your wife from there, one of the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to pattern around to take a wife from there. And

that as he blessed him, he directed him. You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women.

And that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to pattern Ram. So when Esau saw

that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac, his father Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife

beside the wives he had. Malal, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebulath.

Just say it with confidence. I think it worked out okay. But here what we see is that Esau is

taking a wife from the family that God had rejected. So he's trying to stick it to his brother,

but he's also trying to please his father at the same time. So guys, this is one of those

times where you're reading in the Bible. This is a long period of time. There's so many actions,

and this is like a couple of paragraphs in the narrative of scripture. But there really is a lot

here. I mean, going back to verse four, that you may take possession of the land, the implications
11:40
that it would be taken by force. And so there's a forceful conquest that we are seeing directed

here. So as we kick off Genesis 28, go and give your thoughts. I like how if you see when Isaac

sends Jacob off, he blesses him again, sends out the blessing. So now the blessing is meant for

Jacob. And they send him to to Laban to find a wife, you know, just as Abraham sent, oh man, his

can't remember the guy's name. But he sent him to go find Rebecca, or he found Rebecca,

and she watered his camels. And we're going to see the same thing happen here with Jacob.

But the other thing that you brought up about Esau, he further annoyed his parents by marrying

an Ishmaelite. And the narrative, it just basically says that, you know, he thought maybe he could,

he would marry within the family, but saw the displeasure of his parents
12:39
about the foreign wives. So then he went to Ishmael and married other pagan wives in order to further
12:45
annoy his father. So like, I don't even know if that furtherly annoys Isaac or maybe even annoys

God. And so, you know, I think that's where could come from that. I just had a, it's a Chuck Smith

commentary. And I just read about it was kind of coming out of 27, eight and 27 and into 28,

talking about the bitterness that, that Esau had here. And it just, it says, no, notice the

bitterness. This was the Hebrews warning about lest any root of bitterness in a profane person,

Esau, he became very embittered over this, a root of bitterness defiling him. Now,

this hatred of Esau's descendants for Israel continued. Esau became the father of the Edomites,

and there was a great hostility toward the history of the Edomites against the Israelites.

Many times in the Edomites sought to invade the land of Israel, when the Israelites were coming

out of Egypt and needed to pass through the land of the Edomites, the king of Edom met them

with the armies and prohibited their passage. But it's just like that bitterness and that he carries

on in that resentment to despise his parents here and to despise his brother, that seed is planted

for years and years to come. And so just that root of bitterness in our lives and in his life.

So true. The name I was remember is Eleazar of Damascus, that's right. That's who Abraham sent

for Isaac to go find a wife. And so now they're basically sending him back, they're sending Jacob

back to find the same wife. So, okay, feathers. Yeah, crazy. Definitely interesting here.

Let's keep this going Genesis 28. Let's get into Jacob's dream. So Howard, if you can read about

Jacob's dream, that is verses 10 through 22. Yeah, so just finish out Genesis 28, 10 through 22,

finishing verse or chapter 28. I feel like there's going to be hard names coming up for me next.

and he came to a certain place and stayed there that night because the sun had set.

Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and laid down in that place to

sleep. And he dreamed and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth and the top of it

reached to the heavens and behold, the angels were ascending and descending on it and behold,

the Lord stood above it and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham, your father and the God of Isaac,

the land on which you lie, I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like

head and set it up on a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called the name of the place,

Bethel, but the name of the city was loves at the first at first. Then Jacob made a vow saying,

if God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, I will give and will give me bread

to eat and clothe me to where so that I can come again to my father's house in peace. Then the

Lord shall be my God. And this stone, which I have set up on the pillar shall be God's house.

And all that you give me, I will give to a full 10th to you. So we see some interesting things

here and some interesting parallels. Verse 12, we, and he dreamed and behold, there was a ladder

set up on the earth and the top of it reached to heaven and behold the angels of God were ascending

and descending on it. This points to someone point this out in a commentary that it points to Christ

eventually connecting heaven and earth, right? So the transfer of basically travel back and forth

between heaven and earth. There's an echo of the tower of Babel in a story like this as well,

with the, you know, the ladder to the heavens and things like that. So some interesting stuff

He felt like Jacob was seeing it like a commerce between heaven and earth and that he gets

blessed by the Lord and everything he does a hundredfold and that Jesus becomes the grace

angle the take. I got from Moody was representing the ladder and the angels was representing the

activity of angels on Jacob's behalf. Likely the ascending angels represent those of the land of

Israel who had protected Jacob while he was in the land and the descending angels represent those

who operate outside the land and will protect Jacob in his travels. The Lord who was standing

above the ladder affirmed to Isaac all three provisions of the promise of the Abrahamic covenant,

the land, the descendants, and who will be like the dust of the earth and the families of the

earth through his descendants. So when I looked at this and I was thinking about it, like you always

see when God like reiterates his covenant and he always reiterates his covenant in like really
18:51
tough times. Isaac, we saw it reiterated when he had to leave during the famine. Abraham,

we saw it multiple times when they had to leave for a famine and they were getting older and didn't

have offspring. And then now we're seeing Jacob being basically pushed out of his home,

everything that he knows, and he's on a journey to go find an uncle that he's probably never met

before. And you know, I mean, how many of us have been outside and had to put our head on a rock to
19:19
fall asleep, you know? So like, you know, like, I don't know, I feel pretty destitute and be like,

man, this is, this is, this is nuts. I can't believe this is happening. And then this is just God

providing ease and that anxiety that he might be dealing with, you know, being pushed away from his

home. And like you said, I mean, he was probably a mama's boy, you know? So, so yeah, so, you know,

it's great seeing that picturesque that we know even like, even Jacob was protected with the

ascending angels and the descending angels and just us being living vessels of God, how we're

protected. So I thought it was pretty cool imagery. Well, one thing, you know, speaking of imagery,

going back to verse 13, the faith life study Bible pointed this out, you know, says, you know,

there's an anthropomorphic description implying that God sees Yahweh in the form of a man in his

dream. So anthropomorphism is where you give a nonhuman entity human characteristics. Okay, so

Lion King, they give it kind of like, you know, bigger eyes and more expressive facial features,

you're anthropomorphizing it so that, you know, it's more human like. And so you can't think of

God Yahweh as like a man. And this is obviously pre Jesus where, you know, Jesus was God in a

bod. And so I just thought that that was interesting in his dream. He's getting to see the Lord

in this way, seeing angels kind of in this way of going up and down and how they kind of have,

characteristics that will allow you to basically understand them better. So like, you know, God

gives us marriage as, you know, so that we could even understand just a modicum of Jesus' sacrifice

for his bride, the church. So like, as a man, you're trying to understand Ephesians five, like,

how do I operate in this way? Loving sacrificially. And that does that mean I just give my life over

one time. And it's like, well, no, you give it over like every second of every day, like you lay

your life down for your bride. And so I thought that was interesting just looking at it from like,

he was given a dream that he could surmise a meaning to right? It wasn't to amorphous, if you will.

Other thoughts on Genesis 28? I just was going to say 15 and 16. It says, I find it interesting

that God has just should told him I will go wherever you go, I will go. But then he says,

surely the Lord is in this place. And I don't think he quite understood one of the commentaries

that I was reading. They kept pointing back to the theology of who God is. And it's like,

he didn't quite understand the omnipresence of God. He's in all places. You know, he's like,

oh, this is where he is. And this is where he'll be versus, well, he just said, I'm going to go

with you wherever you go. So didn't fully understand that. So Moody commentary actually goes over that.

It goes from this point forward until his return from patter or ram. Jacob never calls God way

his God, but always identifies him as God of Abraham or Isaac. This suggests that Jacob had not

yet come to saving faith in the Lord, showing that God's choices do not depend on human understanding

or merit. Didn't you, I think you maybe mentioned that last week on the verse or chapter 27 when

he said, your God, yeah, yeah, you're God. Yeah, he never talked. He said, you're God giving the

blessing. So, and that's the thing is like, now we see, you know, God kind of presents himself

to, to Jacob and Jacob sees it. Now he creates an offering and God, and I believe this is when

God be, yeah, he says, then the Lord shall be my God. So now he's like taking God. So God even offers

him everything and being the line, even before he ever even became an actual believer in God.

And along those same lines, and I'm curious what you guys think.

Jacob made a vow saying, if God will be with me and keep me, and is that if, is he still, is it

conditional or, or is he understanding like if God's in control, like it's, it's going to happen.

statement? Yeah, to me, I was, I was reading several things they talked about that. It was just like,

you know, we try to twist things and be like, well, God, if you do this, then I'll do this.

Right. That's not what it seems. Yeah, it doesn't really seem like that because we're talking about

verse 20. And then Jacob made a vow, if God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go

and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear so that I come again to my father's house and

peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone, which I have set up for a pillar shall be

God's house. And if all that you give me, I will give a full tent to you. It's, it's almost just like,

it feels to me almost like, of course, like, of course, if God do this, like, of course, I can,

right? Yeah. But that's the way it feels to me, you know, which I know is dangerous. You don't

say that. This is how I feel like the scripture is it either means what it means or it doesn't.

But that's what I thought until he pointed that out. And yeah, the comment, several of the

commentaries I read talked about that that that's him again, trying to say, well, if you do this,

then God is in this place. And I'm going over there. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know either.

It's like the thing you got to look at is like, man, where would I be if I was like in the middle

of the desert and all of a sudden I see like a ladder to heaven and angels and God presenting

You know, I know we talk about Calvinism and different things and the elect and different

things like that. But whenever it talks throughout scripture of faith being a gift, like it, you

know, the scales being taken off of their eyes, when you see like the Red Sea parted, like, you know,

when you're going through Exodus, when you see the pillar of fire, when you see, you know,

the manna from heaven, and then you still don't believe there were people that watched Jesus ascend,

you know, Iron Man as way into the heavens and people were like, yeah, I don't really know.

I don't know if that was the son of God or not. And so it's just like, man, like some people just

won't see it. It's either they refuse to see it or they're not allowed to see it or both,

The stone on the walls mouth was large. And when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds

daughters. The name of the older was Leia, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

Leia's eyes were weak, but Rachel's were beautiful in form and appearance. Jacob loved Rachel.

And he said, I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel. Laban said,

of difficult experiences to discipline him. This shows that our disobedience won't derail God's plan

for our lives, but it will greatly affect how we end up experiencing it. One might spend 20 years

working for someone like Laban while God's teaching us a few things. Yes. I really like that. And it

same happened to his mom. She did the whole plan and everything worked out, except that

she never got seen again. Yeah. Yeah. She was trying to manipulate this so that that she would have

them right or have him and never saw him again. So yeah, I'm still getting like weeks as in the

week like we're divided. Well, the one thing was one week. So like, yeah, it sounds like he's

like finished this week with her. And then I'll give you Rachel and then he worked another seven

turn out badly for both both himself and his daughters. Over time, God will judge manipulators

then married Rachel immediately after that week, not after the seven additional years.

died multiple times, but God has something in store for you. And that's what we have to remember,

even through, through tough times when things feel all jacked up, because our uncle made us

marry a girl. We didn't want to marry that God has a plan for everything. And God's plan is being

fulfilled through this because the lion of Judah comes through the lion of Judah, you know. And so,

you know, that through Levi's deceit, we have a savior because God used what was bad for good.

And we'll see that with his with Joseph as well. And he even goes back to, you know, Leah was hated

and got opened up her womb, right? And Rachel was the preferred one, but she was barren. But

Whenever I'm looking at a particular scripture, like if I'm trying to make a point and I take a

verse later. And so it's like, you wouldn't, you know, take one line out of the show and be like,

like Sam has pointed out, you know, like all these people we think they're stupid. But who knows if

we would have done this? I can look and see, man, if I've done this, that God is still faithful,

no matter what. We see a picture of his grace, right? Yeah, over and over. We saw that with Abraham

and every doubt, all we see is grace and patience, grace and patience. And so that's when I, you know,

that's what we need to draw from the scripture. We need to draw what we're seeing from them and

seeing what God does through them. So, and he shows grace and patience for Leah. I mean,

and I think it's funny we look at here what the Lord saw Leah was hated. Now, do we think that

that, uh, Abraham, excuse me, Jacob hated Leah. He's like, no, I hate you. You know, like,

in them, when we talk about Esau, I love Esau, I hated, but Jacob, I loved they were just decreased

in value. Their value wasn't there. Like with Esau, he's not the chosen one. In Jacob's eyes,

Rachel was a chosen one. That's who he wanted. So we see the decrease in value for Leah and God

saw that as well. And that's why he opened her womb and says, Hey, my plan is going to go through

you. My lineage that will live on the Lion of Judah is going to come from you. Very good. I love
