This is Undaunted Life a Man's Podcast. I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it.
0:57
This is two weeks in a row. Land in, leave it in. Get off of my timer. We stop the timer like
1:09
that. Now watch just with the lightest touch. We're going to reset it to zero. And guess what?
1:13
This is how the timer starts. You just go like that. You have to touch. You just touch this thing.
1:20
This is like a thing now. Like your cologne. Like there's like a thing now in this universe. That's
1:25
the forging table. And wrestling. I never have to touch the timer. Okay, I don't. They do it over
1:32
there. By the way, speaking of wrestling and like boxing timers, those are some of the most
1:36
difficult things on the planet earth to get to work correctly. So guys out there that have like
1:40
jujitsu gyms and all that, you know, that I have to do the intro. I still have to do the intro guys.
1:44
Is that gonna be okay? Now there were 30 seconds in according to the timer because I was able to fix
1:48
it. Goodness gracious. Welcome back to the forging table. The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping
1:54
men to push back darkness with content that forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:59
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience by
2:02
digging into God's word. And we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with us.
2:05
That's how that's Sam. But Ryan, right from the beginning here. OG Ryan.
2:09
If you're going to be a friend of people, right? If you got guys that are in your foxhole or your
2:15
mat toaters, mat carriers or your king's table or whatever you're chosen, you know, thing is
2:19
you're your band of brothers. Sometimes you got to do some investigative work, right?
2:24
Sometimes there are things just come up. There are things that you notice and you're like,
2:28
I just can't let that slide because we might be uncovering an area that needs some adjustment.
2:33
So I think there are some Dick Tracy detective work that needs to be going down right about now.
2:38
Yeah. I was like sniffing out some prosperity gospel and like totally like solid and Howard's
2:44
Bible. I was like, dude, you got cash monies in your Bible. Howard. He's like, he's like, I got your
2:48
Bible. This is an intervention. Got the Bible right here, baby. So we've got, you know,
2:54
it looks well worn. We've got some sticky tabs. There's a dollar bill. There's cash in there.
2:59
And it's a Nehemiah and then looks like there's like a 10 or a five. They're all ones. They're all
3:04
ones. Yeah. What's that one? Psalms. Psalms. More Psalms. Proverbs. Okay, wisdom in there.
3:14
Wisdom. So Howard, we've learned a lot about you here on the Forging Table. You're from Indiana.
3:19
Do you think Indy 500 is exciting? You've never been to a grocery store since you've been married?
3:23
You know, just little things here and there. But money in the Bible. You got to tell us
3:30
something. What's going on here? Have you been listening to Joel's podcast again? Yeah.
3:33
Me and Joel go way back. Yeah. No, no, I did hear a story a long time ago.
3:39
Guy at a prayer breakfast. National prayer breakfast said his mom paid him to memorize as many
3:46
scripture passages as he could. And so he's like, I found all the shortest ones I could to memorize
3:50
those first. So I keep, I keep some cash in there. And once while just to just to remember, like,
3:56
there's value in here. And so I use them, you know, as you're doing through studies and stuff,
4:01
you just kind of move it around. But it's just a good reminder that there's value in this. And so
4:06
that's just okay. And you're only out three dollars that someone steals your Bible. That's
4:10
exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Do you ever give it to people? They were like, here, son, here's the dollar.
4:15
Do you ever do something like that? Never had to give it. Oh, yeah. Like I had time to pay
4:19
the kids to memorize verses, but it's not like a regular cadence. I make my kid do it. I don't even
4:24
pay him. They have to do it first. They do it for a long time. Yes. I have that kid going for
4:29
the Timothy award. It's I was like, there's no, I got there's no if fans or butts kid.
4:34
Like you're going to get the Timothy. You got to explain what all this is. You don't know why
4:37
y'all are connected. You know what? I'll let you because you're an unwanted teacher, aren't you?
4:40
I'm going to let you explain the Timothy award. Oh boy. I don't know if I know what the Timothy
4:46
award is. I keep kids in line. He's a handler. He fights the kids. That's right. So there's three
4:52
books or four books. There's three or four. There's three or four books and TNT. Which what's that
5:00
Sam for? It's dino. It's called TNT. It's like a testimony and something, but they're in TNT. So
5:10
Will's in TNT now. And so to get the Timothy award, you have this book and you have to memorize a
5:15
verse every week and then you have to memorize a verse you already memorized before. It's like
5:18
kind of a different version. Yeah. And then then you have four other verses or four or five other
5:24
verses that you have to memorize. And if they memorize all those verses, which is like, I don't
5:29
even know how many verses, but every week. Yeah, it's four books full of verses. They get the Timothy
5:34
award when they graduate. Awanas. And so one thing I always notice is that at the end of the program
5:41
or into the year, end of the program. So he's in his second year of TNT. So he's got like two more
5:47
years. So yeah, at the end of the program, you can receive the Timothy award and like we go to the
5:53
Oana's graduations every year. And I always see more girls and boys that win the Timothy award.
6:00
And it just kind of was like, for me, it was like, man, like, and I get it. Women, my wife reads more
6:06
books than I do. She actually gets on me because she's like, you don't read anything ever. I was
6:11
like, I read my Bible and I read like, you know, theology stuff. And she's like, yeah, but you don't
6:15
read for fun. And I was like, there's nothing I want to read for fun. There's nothing. And then
6:20
she was like, and then and then I'll try to stay fit here, man. Just keep going. You're good here.
6:31
So, so she actually got, she's like, what are you into? I was like, thrillers. And so she bought,
6:38
she like, she had me look up thriller books and I got, I got one and I finished it in like three
6:43
days. Nice. You know, I was like, I listened to it and read it at the same time. Like, it just
6:47
helps me, like, understand the book better. And but there's a second one sitting on my nightstand.
6:52
I haven't touched it ever since I got sick a couple of weeks ago. I was just like, I don't want to
6:56
read. It's too much work. And I've got this. I got to read. So I would rather read the Bible. But,
7:02
but, but no, like, that's the thing. There's no boys with the Timothy award. Like, I think like,
7:08
I think last year, there was like five boys and there was like 10 girls. And so I get it.
7:13
Girls read more and they're better at that. But it's just like, man, I was like, I want to make
7:17
sure my son is going to be one of those guys up there. There's, there's no, there's no if stands
7:22
or butts. He has to do it. Now, you know, I'm, I'm Michael Malli. I was like, no, if stands or butts,
7:26
these kids got good. And he's good at it. You know, yeah. Now that you've said help,
7:30
you've said it to the forging table. Okay, you've said it to all the undone lifers out there. So
7:34
you're going to have to keep us like, keep us in like he'll be informed. I don't know if the forging
7:41
table is still here when he graduates. I might just drop him by. If you, if you, you try to do that,
7:47
what's going on? If you guys still here in two years,
7:51
go leave if this isn't still here in two year, like I've told everybody before, I would stop
7:55
doing everything else before I would stop the forging table. So I would stop doing solo episodes,
8:00
solo episodes, and I would stop doing interviews. And so now it's like, okay, daily blade, the forging
8:05
table, those two things are just going to have to happen. As long as you know, everything's still
8:09
screwed on straight up here. As long as I'm still here, I guess. So yeah, it all hinges on you. The
8:13
forging table or that Joby loved. We all know that, don't we? Well, guys, today we're going to be
8:18
getting into Genesis 27. And so to start us out, Ryan, how about you go ahead and read the first
8:25
13 verses of Genesis 27? Okay. When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see,
8:32
he called Esau his older son and said to him, my son, and he answered, here I am. He said,
8:38
behold, I am old. I do not know the day of my death. Death. Now then take your weapon
8:44
and quiver and bow and go out to the field and hunt game for me and prepare for me a delicious
8:50
food such as I love and bring it to me so that I may eat and my soul may bless you before I die.
8:56
Now Rebecca was listening when Isaac spoke to his son, Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt
9:02
for game and bring it, Rebecca said to her son, Jacob, I heard your father speak to your brother,
9:06
Esau, bring me game and prepare for me a delicious food that I might eat it and bless you before the
9:13
Lord before bless you before the Lord before I die. Now therefore my son obey my voice as I command
9:20
you, go to the flock and bring me two good young goats so that I might prepare delicious food for
9:25
your father such as he loves and you shall bring it to your father to eat so that he may bless you
9:32
before he dies. But Jacob said to Rebecca, his mother, behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man
9:37
and I am a smooth man just like me. Just go and just read the Bible. Perhaps my father
9:44
finished it. Perhaps my father will fill me and shall be mocking him and bring a curse upon myself
9:52
and not a blessing. His mother said to him, let your curse be on my son. Only obey my voice and go
9:59
bring them to me. Just so everybody knows who's not watching the, what's happening, mock YouTube.
10:05
Kyle has been rubbing my smooth head since you couldn't take it seriously. I'm sorry, I just saw
10:12
it and they totally just dawned on me. Is this like the fecal from last week, like you just couldn't
10:16
make your way past it? I was just like, oh man, I'm totally like smooth like Jacob, this freaking
10:21
guy. And you're hairy like Esau. I don't know what. And you'll see red hair. I don't know what
10:25
Joby says in you. That'd be a lot of service. Because I look more like Jacob, you're like Esau.
10:29
I guess so. Jacob, he loved Esau. He hated, please, Kyle. You smell more like game and he smells.
10:36
You think I'm an idiot redhead or whatever you said last time in the same thing? You probably
10:41
think some dumb good grief. I don't know why we're even here right now. You know, when we talked about
10:45
the pictures that we all painted that one time. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that little date. And my wife
10:50
painted the one of me, which I look like was actually fantastic. It was a good thing. Yeah, I seeded
10:54
really good. But it, but it honestly, I think I was wearing this shirt too. Yeah. Yeah. That looks
10:57
familiar. It actually looked like my mug shot. We set it up. My dad goes to be like a mug shot.
11:05
And I was like, wait, do you have a mug shot? No, I don't have a mug shot. Okay. I was like,
11:09
because, you know, with their, I thought that's what I was like the same. Because now there's a good
11:14
story immediately. We were going to be putting that on a t-shirt. Like I was just trying to happen.
11:18
Was going to be the Ryan horn t-shirt with, and it would just say the forging fable that Joby
11:22
loved himself, which is all like seven of them. But yeah, we'll do it. Well, you know, this is a
11:27
great way to kick off our discussion of Genesis 27. Now, it's going to be like a kind of a hard
11:32
left turn here. But at the very beginning, he knows he's going to die. Okay. But he's gathering,
11:38
you know, his sons around him, like he's getting ready for death. We get a hint that Isaac is a
11:44
sensual man, meaning like he's very sense oriented because yeah, he's blind. And so he's kind of like
11:50
more into his senses. He wants food. So he wants kind of like that. The mouth pleasure, you know,
11:55
that's going to be coming from from getting this food that he likes. And he's preparing you. We see
11:59
in verse five, he's preparing to give us final blessing. But also we see in this, Isaac is not
12:05
really giving spiritual leadership here from the very beginning, like he's trying to pass on his
12:09
blessing. And then it kind of like starts to devolve from there. But it did, it brought up for me,
12:16
you know, I want to discuss this with you guys. I can't remember who said I hate when I can't
12:20
give credit to somebody. But somebody brought up this thought experiment before like, if
12:24
because some people don't get to choose when they die, obviously get in a car accident or you have
12:27
some sort of sudden, you know, episode, medical episode of some kind. But there are other people
12:31
that know, Hey, the end is not okay. This is, you know, I don't have much longer here on this earth.
12:36
And so people can start to gather around you and you can start like kind of saying your goodbyes
12:41
while you're still, you know, they're in those types of things. Like, what would you say
12:48
to your progenies, like specifically to your children? Because, you know, if your spouse is
12:53
there, obviously you say, you know, say, I love you. And you know, you mean so much to me and all
12:56
that kind of stuff. But like specifically to your kids, because again, he's transferring a blessing
13:01
here. But like, what would you say? And I don't have like a great answer to that. But I guess I
13:09
know what I would want my children, my boys to say about me, if that were to happen and those types
13:14
of things. But it's almost like you're, Hey, huddle up, we got one last play, like this is a one last
13:21
thing I get to say to you. And I just don't know, I don't know if you guys have thought about that,
13:24
there's certain, you know, thought experiments and books out there that they make you write your
13:27
eudology, they make you write, you know, what you'd want to say on your epitaph, you know, what would
13:31
you want your last words to be if you got to choose it and all of that. But have you all like thought
13:35
about that ever or does anything like immediately come to mind? So I don't hear away. I always go
13:41
back to Paul's words, fight the good fight and finish the race. And that's like what I want my
13:45
kids to do. I want them to see that I fought the good fight. And I finished the race as a as a
13:50
Christian man, even though I didn't do it perfectly and I never will, nobody will ever do it perfectly.
13:54
Only one man did that. But I want them to see that I fought to be who I am and to be the man of God
14:02
that I want to be. And I want them to do the same thing. I want them to fight for that to be the
14:07
men of God and the woman of God that that God wants them to be. And so I would I love those words
14:13
from from Paul, fight the good fight. I fought the good fight and I finished the race. And I think
14:17
that's just the way that I'd I'd want to be remembered. How about you guys? I mean, last week, we kind
14:23
of talked about your dad and kind of his his legacy with with a lot of people. So we kind of know what
14:28
people would likely say about your dad, but like, you know, for you to your son, like what would you
14:35
have you thought about what you would say? Much the same. And I always did the thought experiment,
14:41
like, what are they going to say at my funeral? Yeah, what would I want to be said at my funeral?
14:47
And much the same thing, though, just like trust God, trust your family, take care of your mom
14:52
and trust in God everything else. Yeah, it'll work out. God will take care of you.
15:00
I think that above all else would be mine. And then I don't know after that, something about
15:06
short jokes, go with them. Don't fight. It's gonna happen. Don't call redheads ugly. Yeah,
15:13
nice with your words. Okay, let's skip off of you. How are you save us here? Go for it.
15:19
We had a good friend that passed away at our at my office recently, and he had about a
15:24
month to spend luck with his family. And so it's amazing how quickly your focus shifts
15:29
when it's whether it's two weeks or whether it's a month. I mean, that was so fast in a month.
15:36
And to think like, you need to spend that time that last month or as many moments as you can. And
15:40
he was trying to come into the office for a couple of days and like, get the heck out of here. Like,
15:44
you need to be going and spending time with them. But I think that really resonated for me at that
15:49
time. And so it's just, I think a lot like Ryan said, it's like, I would just tell them to keep
15:54
their eyes fixed on him, right? There's so many things that can distract our visions in this world.
15:58
But I, you know, I go back to Hebrews 12, which is one of my favorites, but you know, keep running
16:04
that race. Keep our eyes fixed on him. And so that's the thing that we have to keep pointing them in
16:11
that right direction. And there's times they're going to get off and in different phases of life.
16:17
But we just have to keep coming back to him and pointing them in the right direction because he's
16:21
going to guide them through that. And so that's, I think that's probably where I would steer them.
16:25
Yeah, Ryan, this is a derivative of what you said, but I hope I get the story right. But
16:29
the executive pastor, excuse me, of Church of 1122, John and Jacksonville is a guy named Pastor Brit.
16:36
And so Pastor Brit's father was also a pastor. And I think this is how it went down. But Pastor
16:42
Brit's father passed away. And I think Joby was there for the passing or was there afterwards or
16:48
something like that. And then this guy passes away. And then Joby has this major revelation
16:56
of his purpose on this plan. I think he called his wife Gretchen. And he basically said, I figured
17:02
out how to be the best pastor in America. Or he said something like that. Again, I hope I'm not
17:04
butchering the story. And Gretchen's like, what in the world are you talking about? He's just like,
17:09
I just have to finish well. He's like, this man finished well. And I was talking to a young man.
17:16
Yeah, I was actually talking to a guy that I'm coaching in the Dominion program. So that's like
17:21
the little coaching program that I do with guys. So you can check it out undaunted at life slash
17:26
Dominion. But I was talking to a guy and he knows an older guy who is a Christian. And he was like,
17:32
man, this guy's just not finishing well. Like he's kind of turned off like he's not really on fire
17:37
for the Lord. He's not really like investing in anybody else or any of those types of things.
17:41
What are some easy things that I can do to get him back in the game? I just looked at him like,
17:46
there isn't anything you can't make him care. You can't make him finish well. Like you can
17:54
encourage him. But the number of older fellows out there that a younger fellow like one of us at
18:00
this table would love to to talk to and to gain wisdom from. Like for those of you guys that are
18:07
maybe your careers over with, but you're not your what your life is not over with yet. Man,
18:12
there are people that you can pour into that you have wisdom to give them. But you just think,
18:17
Oh, my life is just going to be here in front of this television or at this pond with this,
18:20
you know, same, you know, same fishing pole and lure. It's just like, man, there's there's so much
18:25
more to give. And, you know, I've heard Jobe say this before, like, if you worked in the world
18:30
trade centers, how would you have evangelized on nine 10? Right? If you knew nine 11 was coming,
18:35
right? And you knew what was going to go down? How would you comport yourself if you were transported
18:39
back to waking up the morning of nine 10 and you're on your way to work? And so it's like, how would
18:44
you be different if you realize that this was not not yeah, not the end for sure. And that's
18:50
Oh, go ahead. I was just going to say, I mean, I think that is a lie that a lot of people that
18:54
you're talking about, Kyle, whether it's you're just getting ready to come into retirement or after
18:59
I've had a lot of conversations with a lot of men that their their fathers and their grandfathers
19:04
have just disengaged. And it's just like they have so much to give. And it's like, I used to listen
19:09
to a podcast years ago, I was a family life today podcast. And there were two men on there. And when
19:14
you would hear them speak about the the circumstances that they went through in their life. And with
19:20
their families, you just there's so much hope and so much encouragement that comes from that. And
19:25
and they're speaking truth. They're speaking God's word. And there's nothing that that that fills
19:30
like that does. And so it just it motivates and drives. So I think that's one thing that, you know,
19:35
I want to I think about often when I was in high school, I was like, I was a horrible person.
19:43
Like if if I died in high school, I probably think my family would be the only people to show up to
19:48
my funeral if I'm lucky. And that's one thing that makes me think about how you finish well is
19:54
I want somebody from high school to hear and see me now and think, wow, what a totally changed
20:02
person. Look what God did in his life when he put God first because I didn't put God first in high
20:06
school. I put myself first. College did the same thing, you know, probably until I was in my mid
20:13
20s, early 30s, is when I finally let go and let the Holy Spirit just not only reside in me, but
20:20
move in me. I just stole that from Pastor Mark from today sermon. So just thought I'd shout that out.
20:25
But that's the thing that I think we need to think about that I think about with my kids is like,
20:29
hey, I can teach them them. I can teach them this stuff now. But don't get down if you if you if you
20:36
have that hard time in life where you're you are a jerk, you know, but finish well, let God change
20:42
you and finish well. And also let God guide you. As we see in this early part of Genesis 26,
20:48
Rebecca knew that the blessing was intended for Jacob, the younger brother, but she decided
20:53
to take matters into her own hands. You know, they're in verse 13. His mother said to him,
20:58
let your curse be on me, my son, only obey my voice and go bring them to me. And I thought about
21:05
Edipis Rex and the Edible Mother, it's kind of this all consuming mother where, you know, there's such an
21:12
abdicated leadership spiritually coming from your father that your mom says something like this and
21:18
you just go right along with it. And Rebecca, she just, you know, again, took matters in her own hands
21:22
here. Well, that's the thing. Isaac knew. Yeah, they both knew. And Isaac was abdicating his
21:28
responsibility. I don't know if it was on purpose, or he just forgot because he's old,
21:33
or maybe he favored Esau. Oh, I think that's 100% favor. I think he favored Esau. He lived another 40
21:38
years. Yeah. Well, no, yeah, he lived to see Joe's, he lived to see Jacob's kids. Like he, you know,
21:43
he was trying to push this himself. And so he abdicated responsibility, didn't listen to what God
21:49
had prophesied through his wife. And then his wife, rather than trusting in God and what God's
21:55
plan was, she decided to be deceitful to make sure that the plan went through. So I was reading one of
22:00
MacArthur's commentaries on this. And he said, I'll just read what he says, obey my voice. This
22:06
phrase shows up repeatedly in the book of Genesis frequently with negative implications. Adam listened
22:12
to the voice of his wife and ate the forbidden fruit. Later, he heard the voice of the Lord in
22:16
the garden and hid himself. Abraham, he did the voice of Sarai and produced a son through Hagar
22:23
against the Lord's will. Here we find Rebecca giving ungodly advice to her son and Jacob eating
22:30
her words. So just repeatedly through our Genesis, we see this. And the note I put down there,
22:36
that these men take these words that they had heard and test them against the promises of God.
22:41
Or did they just take them and like, nope, nope, that sounds good.
22:44
They wanted to make it happen. And I think what's crazy is we see all the sin. Look at all the sin
22:49
going down in this moment right now. And God's still glorified in the end. And he still blesses,
22:55
you know, and that's the crazy thing to think about. Because I think about my sin. I'm like,
22:58
oh man, I'm going to be down on myself. And God, the God wants nothing to do with me. But no,
23:03
he'll use my rags to clean, you know, windows, you know, and so to open things up. And so I just
23:11
think it's like a beautiful thing to see through all this sin. God's plan still goes through and
23:16
God's still able to do what he needs to do. So you think and, you know, he had been prof,
23:22
or it was prophesied that the younger would serve, or the older would serve the younger.
23:27
So in this, did Isaac, by doing this, trying to go through with this, you know, is he going
23:33
against God's will here? I think he's abutated his role, for sure. He's not listening to God
23:39
due to the favor of one son. But, you know, I mean, reading about Jacob, I mean, the dude was a
23:45
sly guy, you know, I mean, it's kind of like, it's kind of like, hey, you got the son who's like,
23:51
the football star. And like, he's the man, he's like the Kyle of like, you know, just masculinity.
23:59
And like, the son that you really want to hear, like, you're like, oh, man, this is, this is the
24:06
son, this is the best one. He's redheaded, hairy. And then he's got this bald, sly guy who all
24:12
the kids in high school hate, and is sneaky and conniving, but can cook really well. You know what
24:19
I'm saying? So, but he's too many vegetables and stinks all the time. It was too. So yeah, and like,
24:26
is anointed with these beautiful smells, you know what I'm saying? But that's the thing is like,
24:30
I don't think, you know, Isaac really liked Jacob, you know, but that's the thing we have to look
24:34
at too with Rebecca is Rebecca's trying to make this go through because she knows about the prophecy,
24:38
but she she's lacking faith, like Isaac lacked faith when he was with within the Philistines,
24:45
where he he lied to get to be safe. And she's trying she's lying here and being deceitful here,
24:50
because she won, I think she probably favors Jacob a little bit more as well. But also because
24:56
she knows what God's promises. It's almost a trust, but verify type thing. Like these people are like,
25:00
yeah, trust the Lord, but I'm gonna go ahead and just make sure I'm gonna go ahead and like,
25:04
change things up and do things, excuse me, completely out of God's will in order to send it in a
25:09
particular direction. Sam, if you wouldn't mind reading, go ahead Sam reads, but we forgot about
25:16
in Genesis 26, 23, when Esau was 40 years old, he took Judith, the daughter of the Mary the Hittite
25:21
to be his wife and Basement, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and they made a life and made life
25:27
bitter for Isaac and Rebecca. So he married pagan women as well. And so that's another thing that
25:33
probably drove a wedge between him and his mother is that he was married to pagan women, as we'll
25:38
see in other chapters that when Jacob goes to find a wife, what's done there. But I think that's
25:45
the thing that kind of led towards the whole, you know, Esau wasn't going to be there because
25:50
his offspring was going to be pagan offering. All right, Sam read 14 through 29.
25:56
So he went took them and brought them to his mother and his mother prepared delicious food
26:02
such as his father loved. Then Rebecca took the best garments of Esau, her older son,
26:08
which were with her in the house and put them on Jacob, her younger son. And the skins of the young
26:12
goat, she put on his hands and the smooth part of his neck. And and she put the delicious foods in
26:18
the bread, which she had prepared into the hand of her son, Jacob. So he went into his father and
26:24
said, my father, he said, here I am. Who are you, my son? Jacob said to his father, I am Esau,
26:30
your firstborn. I've done as you told me. Now sit up, eat my game that your soul may be blessed.
26:36
But Isaac said to his son, how is this that you have found it so quickly, my son? He answered,
26:41
because the Lord your God granted me success. Then Isaac said to Jacob, please come near,
26:48
that I may fill you, my son to know whether you are really my son, Esau or not. So Jacob went near
26:54
to Isaac, his father who felt him and said, the voices, Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands
26:59
of Esau. And he did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like his brother, Esau's hands.
27:06
So he blessed him. He said, are you really my son, Esau? He answered, I am. Then he said,
27:12
bring it near to me that I may eat of my son's game and bless you. So he brought it near to
27:17
home and ate and he brought him wine and he drank. Then his father, Isaac said to him,
27:21
come near, kiss me, my son. So he came near and kissed him. And Isaac smelled of his garments
27:27
and blessed him and said, am I still going? Yeah, they're 29. They're 29. See the smell of my son
27:34
is the smell of the field that the Lord has blessed. May God give you of the do of heaven
27:39
and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let people serve you in nations,
27:44
bow down to you, be Lord over your brothers and may your mother's sons bow down to you,
27:50
cursed be everyone who curses you and blessed be everyone who blesses you.
27:55
So as we see here, we have Isaac depending on his failing senses. He's really relying on
28:03
the senses here. And you can tell that he's not sure of what's happening here. It's like, okay,
28:09
this is the hands of Esau, but it feels like or the voice of Esau, but it feels like Jacob.
28:15
And you know, there's, there's issues here, but he's going off of the senses and his senses,
28:19
as we've seen here, like they're, they're gone, but he's just relying almost on carnality to try
28:25
to get through this situation. And it's just not working out well. I just wonder what kind of bloody
28:29
mess Jacob looked like because like, you know, they didn't have time to tan the hides after they
28:36
just cut the goats up and he put it on himself. But I think it, one thing that it looks, we have
28:42
to look at too is he is, Isaac's blind. And so he has to rely on those other senses because he
28:46
cannot see. And so, you know, he smells and he smells of the field because of dude, you know,
28:52
Jake was wearing goats. And I think he also had some of Esau's clothes that were left over at that
28:56
house. And all he in through his ears, all he can do is hear Jacob's voice, but through touch
29:03
and smell, he smells Esau and feels Esau. So, and then the food. And then you look at the food
29:09
that was prepared, you know, I want to know how well of a cook Rebecca is to make venison,
29:16
make goat taste like venison, you know, because he's expecting wild game. And that's where he comes
29:21
back and says, how did you find something so quickly? You know, and she took two young goats and
29:26
made some food with it. So, yeah, it was interesting that she tells, like, listen to my voice. And
29:32
that's where they almost fail was the voice part. I thought that was kind of interesting in there.
29:38
I just thought I think it's interesting. We talked about it earlier, but he lived another,
29:42
was it 20 or 40 years? 43 years. Okay. So he lives another 43 years and a couple of the
29:48
commentaries I was reading, it was like, he just kind of wanted, hey, son, go, go get me this game.
29:53
So I can kind of do my thing and kind of pass this this on. I'd like to have some really good
29:58
game and feel satisfied, right? And so they kind of put this off as at least the commentary I was
30:04
reading is like, I don't think that he was really that close to dying. He just, he wanted to be
30:09
satisfied. He wanted to kind of get this passed off and give it over to him. And so, you know,
30:15
which is how he lost the first birthright. Yeah. Well, he's also a queen meal. He's blind,
30:21
you know, like if I was blind, it's not like I'm going to go out there and be doing a lot of
30:25
things. Like I probably just want to retire now and, and, you know, pass, pass the buck on.
30:31
I thought something that really stood out to me was because the Lord your God granted me success
30:36
when he asked him, when he asked him, how did you find the game so quickly? He said,
30:42
because the Lord your God granted me success. Like, is that taking God's name in vain?
30:48
Of course. Yeah. That's where I was just like, man, even, even through like, we, we know that all
30:53
these parties are guilty. Esau's guilty of stupidity. Isaac's guilty of, of abdicating his role,
31:02
Rebecca's guilty for lying. And now we have, uh, Jacob guilty for going along with it. And then
31:10
also using the Lord's name in vain to show, you know, to, to steal this, to take this birthright,
31:16
basically. And so that to me was just like, ah, man, it was like a gut punch when I read that.
31:20
I was just like, dude, it's totally using God in his life. So I thought it was interesting. Oh,
31:26
sorry. No, you're good. I thought it was interesting. And Rebecca said, let, let the guilt be on me.
31:30
Yeah. He was happy to do it. He's like, my mom's taking this. Yes. Yeah. The problem is it's like,
31:36
that's not how it works. No. Right. Like there's, so they're, the commentary was reading. It's like,
31:40
their theology really here hasn't been to on point. Right. And the consequences that go on later.
31:46
Yeah. You're just like, man, you totally deserve this in every way. And, and he throws that line in
31:52
there. Uh, be Lord over your brothers and your mother's sons. Yeah. Cause he's got a couple of
31:59
lives, got a bunch of kids with different lives, but hey, like just moms, sons, you're definitely
32:04
Lord over them. Yeah. It's a tremendous, uh, thing that we see here. I think you guys are,
32:11
or onto something there with, again, him using the Lord's name in vain. Um, we see that a lot
32:16
in modern ministries where people, I got a vision from the Lord. And if you give me a thousand dollars
32:22
right now, 50 people in this room, give me a thousand dollars, you will receive the seven blessings,
32:26
blah, blah, blah. Basically everyone that's around Donald Trump, all the spiritual advisors he has,
32:30
or people like this, shout out to Dr. Paula White. Is she a doctor? She's not even a pastor. Who cares?
32:34
But like you have these people that they will, they will say that God bless us. God told me to do
32:38
this. God gave me a revelation. God gave me a vision. And it's going to lead to your
32:42
downing benefit. And so people think using the Lord's name in vain is saying gd. It's like, well,
32:48
no, that that's using the Lord's name in vain. You're using it for vain glory in your own personal
32:52
glory. Um, let's go ahead and read the rest of Genesis 27 here. Go ahead. Go ahead.
32:56
Can we go over the actual lease? Yeah. Yeah. Like we should go over the actual blessing.
33:00
Yeah. Cause in the next section, we get to the, the other one. Yeah. And so in this blessing,
33:04
you see Isaac give prosperity. So may God give you the do of heaven and the fatness of the earth
33:11
and plenty of grain and wine. So he's like praying prosperity over his lineage and over, you know,
33:18
who's to come? And then he puts in seniority. And this is like, when we read this next thing,
33:23
we're going to see what happens in regards to seniority. So he's going, like you said,
33:27
Lord over your brothers and your mother's sons bow down to you and blessed everyone who blesses you.
33:32
And so basically in this, he's in, in this blessing, he's blessing him with hopes of prosperity. So
33:38
he's passing on that covenant that God has had with Abraham and him down to his next son,
33:43
which is now Jacob. And then he's also saying that now he will Lord over his brother because
33:49
the blessing has been given to him for seniority. He also puts the curse on him.
33:54
Curse would be everyone who curses you. And now the one he's trying to raise up curses his brother
34:00
here in a little bit. Yep. It's pretty crazy. It's great. Jake showed me a coke.
34:07
All right. So we read in 30. Yeah, let's get into this last section. So Howard,
34:13
how about you go and hit this last section here? So go and start with verse 30 and go
34:17
through the end of the chapter. Okay. And as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob,
34:21
when Jacob was scarcely gone out of the presence of Isaac, his father, Esau, his brother came in
34:27
from his hunting. He he also prepared delicious food and brought it in for his father. And he said
34:34
to his father, excuse me, let my father arise and eat of his son, the game that you may bless me.
34:41
His father Isaac said to him, who are you? He answered, I am your son, your firstborn Esau.
34:47
Then Isaac trembled very violently and violently and said, who was who was it then that hunted
34:53
game and brought it to me. And I ate it all before you came. And I have blessed him. Yes. And he
35:01
shall be blessed. As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out, cried out with him
35:08
in an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, bless me, even me also, oh, my father.
35:15
But he said, your brother came deceitfully and he has taken away your blessing. Esau said, is he not
35:23
is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has cheated me these two times. He took away my birthright
35:29
and beheld now he has taken away my blessing. Then he said, have you not reserved a blessing for me?
35:35
Isaac answered and said to Esau, behold, I have made him Lord over you and all his brothers. And I
35:42
have given him for him for servants and grain and wine. And I have sustained him. What then can I do
35:49
for you, my son, Esau said to his father, have you, but one blessing, my father, bless me, even me
35:58
also on my father, and Esau lifted up his voice and wept. Then Isaac, then Isaac, his father answered
36:05
and said to him, behold, away from away from the fatness of the earth, shall you your dwelling be
36:12
and away from the do of heavens, heaven on high, by your sword, you shall live and you shall serve
36:19
your brother. But when you grow restless, you shall break his yoke and from your neck. Now Esau
36:26
hated Jacob because of his because of this blessing with which his father had blessed him. And Esau
36:32
said to himself, the days of mourning for your father are approaching. Then I will kill my brother
36:37
Jacob. But the words of Esau, but the words of Esau, her older son, were so told to Rebecca. So
36:45
she sent and called Jacob to her, called Jacob, her younger son and said to him, behold, your brother
36:52
Esau confronts, comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. Now therefore, my son obey
36:58
my voice, arise, flee you to laban, my brother in heron, and stay with him a while until your brother's
37:04
fury turns away, until your brother's anger turns away from you. And he forgets what you have done
37:10
to him, then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be, why should I be,
37:17
be refed of you both in one day? Then Rachel, or then Rebecca said to Isaac, I loathe my life
37:23
because of the hit tight women. If Jacob marries one of the hit tight women, like these, one of the
37:29
women of the land, what would what good will my life be? So David Brown and his commentary had an
37:35
interesting thing about verse 45. It refers to the law of goalism. That's where the nearest of kin
37:41
would be obliged to avenge the death of Jacob. So that's where she's talking about, I don't want to
37:46
lose both of my sons at the same time. But ultimately she does. Jacob ultimately goes away for 20 years.
37:52
We see that later on in Genesis 31, he's away for 20 years. Rebecca never sees him again.
37:56
And so it's just kind of one of those downstream consequences of a decision. But to get back into
38:01
this section, you can see that Isaac is torn. Isaac is torn here because he he understands
38:07
what's happened. He understands that he's been deceived. He wants to give a blessing, but he also
38:12
knows where the blessing is supposed to go. But he also wants to provide for the older son.
38:16
And I remember thinking to myself, why couldn't he just? Oh, whoopsie Daisy. I'm just going to give
38:20
the blessing to their son. And it's like, that's just not how this works. Like at that time, it's like
38:24
there was one blessing that could be given to one person and it couldn't be undone once it was given.
38:29
And so that's why, I mean, we see it there in the text, you know, he saw cried out and exceedingly
38:33
great and bitter cry. He wept. I mean, this is apoplexy. Like he is, he is absolutely up against it. And
38:39
it's, it's a horrible situation for him. But it's, and this isn't the way God wanted it to be done.
38:45
But it's the way God wanted it to be. That makes sense. Well, go ahead.
38:50
Well, it's just, it's crazy to me that what you're saying, like, why don't you just say it again?
38:56
Like the words mean so much. But at the same time, she's lying to him and it don't mean as much.
39:01
Like there's the trickery going on that seems to be okay. But anything set out loud is,
39:07
is fact, yeah, law. And it's kind of, well, I think it's just the consequence to Esau's flippant
39:14
like behavior in regards to his birth right and who he was. I think he was just so high on himself
39:21
that, you know, he gave away his birth right for some lentil soup, basically a salad. And then,
39:27
and then when the blessing comes around, when the blessing comes around,
39:31
you know, he's expecting it, you know, like he feels like he deserves it. And it's just like,
39:37
you don't, you know, it's not, it's not even set aside for you. Now these,
39:41
these, Rebecca and Jacob did in a very deceitful way, but that blessing was meant for Jacob
39:46
because that's what God's plan was. So it's just, it just goes to show that, you know what,
39:52
I could do every deceitful thing. And if God's plan is for me to be over here and I'm doing
39:58
deceitful things to get over there, I'm still going to get over there. But who knows what the
40:02
consequences are going to be. So I think it's something that we need to look at. But I thought
40:07
something that was pretty crazy to think about was Isaac, remember, or when Esau answers him,
40:14
says, I'm your son, your firstborn Esau, then Isaac trembled very violently and said,
40:20
who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me? And I ate it all before you came. And like,
40:26
I think at that point, either he remembers the, the, um, the oracle of, of, of Jacob,
40:34
so, um, taking over prophecy of Jacob, um, either he remembers it or he's like, man, you know, like,
40:42
I try to, I try to do something and I, and I, you know, I, I've been told by God, like, this is,
40:48
this is on me as well. And so he trembles violently. He's like, oh, man. And so I think of that moment,
40:53
like these two, you got a father and a son, this dude's breaking down his blessings gone,
40:57
his brother is Lord over him now. I'm just trying to move. He hasn't been made about this,
41:02
right? Like this brother. Yeah. And then you've got a father who's like, man,
41:06
I really wanted this for my son, you know, and he's like, and you know what, I, I couldn't make
41:11
it happen. I think that's that piece. It's like you see, he, he really wanted to give that to him.
41:17
And Rebecca wanted him to have that, you know, one of the commentaries was talking about, you know,
41:22
how that favoritism, right? And what they wanted and neither of them got either of what they wanted
41:27
by showing that favoritism. But the one thing I was reading about on this was it talks about,
41:32
you know, when, when Esau gave up his birthright, it talks about for us, you know, some practical
41:40
application is a lot of times sin is crouching in our door at a weak moment, right? And so for him,
41:47
if he had time to sit there and think about the consequences of giving away his birthright for
41:51
the soup, he probably wouldn't have made that decision, right? But he was cold, tired, hungry,
41:55
like, and it's in those times in our life, when we make those decisions, it like, oh, gosh, yeah,
42:00
probably shouldn't have done that, right? And God already knew he was going to do that anyway.
42:04
It's got his God knew Esau and Esau's heart. And I don't know if I said that this this round or
42:09
if it was last week, but Jacob, I loved and Esau hated. It's not that God hated Esau as a person.
42:17
It's just that he chose Jacob over him. And that was his plan. It's just like how we have to realize
42:23
that, you know, we're going to read about the Ishmaelites and the Edomites who are a part of Esau.
42:28
But God still chose Israel over everything else. And so that's what we have to realize when we
42:37
discuss this is this was God's plan. He knew Esau was going to do that. He may have even said
42:42
he saw up to do that just so he saw, you know, maybe would get the hint that, you know what,
42:47
like, maybe I'm not the chosen one. But Esau seemed like he was the captain of the football team and
42:53
expected everything to come his way. So I was one thing I was thinking through about this,
42:57
and I heard a pastor talk about it years ago, but, you know, we want to sit here again. And I think
43:02
I said this maybe last week when we were talking about this, so easy to judge the decisions they
43:07
make. But I heard a judge, I heard a pastor, you know, preach on this exact passage. And one of the
43:12
things he said, he's like, for for men, we exchange when we look at pornography, we exchange the beauty
43:20
of what our marriage with our wife could be that covenant marriage when we decide we're going to
43:26
take time and go look at a screen. We're exchanging that beautiful gift that he's given us for 30 seconds
43:33
of, you know, of enjoyment. Right. And so that's, that's just for that part of it. You know,
43:41
what else do we sacrifice or what else do we give away 30 seconds of what is it our phone? Like,
43:47
we have the blessing of our family of our kids, our friends, right? But yeah, we give that away for
43:53
15 minutes on the phone looking at her an hour on the phone with Instagram, right? Like, no,
43:57
those things that we're exchanging and that that one really hit home with me when, when that pastor
44:01
talked about that, like what we're exchanging. Yep. So no, I agree. I was trying to find
44:08
someone Genesis 27, but I did not find it. Anything else on Genesis 27 before we wrap?
44:13
Um, I think Isaac has Jacob go to laban to find a wife. So he's not unequally yoked.
44:21
So if we look at Esau, Esau married pagan women, um, Hittites and another one,
44:27
and then we're going to see in the next chapter, he actually marries an Ishmaelite. And so, um,
44:33
as you can see in the earlier chapters, the, uh, pagan wives have brought, um, kind of disdain
44:40
upon, uh, Isaac and Rebecca. And so, and then Esau even realizes it and then goes and marries
44:46
an Ishmaelite, but they're, they know what they have now in front of them that Jacob's been blessed
44:51
and he's carrying the blessing. And so they want him to find a wife who's not unequally yoked.
44:55
Yeah. I think both chapters end with who they married. Um, I also think it's funny that
45:02
Rebecca, uh, everything falls apart, all our plans. And her first thought is like, let's send
45:08
him to laban. That guy's, he, he won't make mistakes with his plans. He's the smartest guy.
45:14
I think his mom like set him up again. Yeah. Right. This guy, he'll know how to fix my problem.
45:20
You shouldn't know exactly just how deceitful Rebecca is. You're like, man, laban. He's a good
45:24
dude. Yeah. Yeah. That's some judgment issues for sure. Uh, anything else on Genesis 27?
