This is Undaunted Life a Man's Podcast.
0:23
I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it.
0:27
Welcome back to the Forging Table.
0:28
The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping
0:29
then to push back darkness with content that forges
0:31
spiritual mental and physical resilience.
0:33
At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys
0:35
foraging resilience by digging in spiritual resilience.
0:38
If you're wondering which one, by digging into God's word
0:40
and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey
0:41
with us out of order, we're going mad,
0:42
we're going winkler, we're going browning.
0:44
I don't have anything funny at the beginning.
0:45
Does anybody have anything funny?
0:46
'Cause I kind of forgot.
0:48
'Cause I just say a bunch of pizza.
0:49
And that's all I can think about is how that's going to be
0:51
settling over the next 30 to 45 minutes.
0:53
I mean, I think it is funny that people think LeBron James
0:56
is the greatest basketball player of all time.
0:57
I know that we are talking about athletes, you know?
1:01
- Does anyone at this table think that LeBron James
1:03
is the best basketball player ever?
1:04
- Oh, absolutely not.
1:05
No, I mean, there's certain things that should be debated
1:07
that should be what's going on.
1:08
- Is there confidence that if I said name
1:10
the greatest basketball player of all time
1:13
in three, two, one, Michael Jordan?
1:15
Okay, just wanted to make sure
1:16
that we were all in the same place.
1:18
The debate actually does become second.
1:21
Who's the second best player of all time?
1:23
- Oh.
1:24
- 'Cause you got people that automatically go LeBron.
1:26
You got Wilt, you got Bill Russell people.
1:28
You got Larry Bird people.
1:29
- I'm Magic Johnson.
1:31
- Magic Johnson.
1:32
The Kobe one is interesting 'cause someone made a good point.
1:34
They're like, what is how many MVPs this Kobe had?
1:36
I think he only had one.
1:37
And so it's like he was only the best player in the league
1:41
once, like in his entire career.
1:44
And I was like, that's actually a pretty compelling point.
1:45
- He won a lot of rings with Shaq.
1:48
- Right, he won three with Shaq and two with Powell.
1:50
- Who would you say, Jake?
1:51
Was it a second?
1:52
- Magic Johnson.
1:53
That's a good pick.
1:54
What about you here?
1:55
- Wilt.
1:56
- I always say it, the reason I always put magic is number two.
2:00
He got more championships in bird.
2:02
Otherwise I'd have birded it to.
2:03
- Bird.
2:04
- But the reason I say that magic over bird is he's got more rings
2:08
and those two were slagging it out all through the eighties
2:11
and Magic probably would have won more rings
2:14
had it never won, not been for AIDS.
2:17
But number two, he also had this guy that he ran into
2:19
called named Michael Jordan who also kind of knocked him out
2:23
as well because Michael's first championship
2:27
was against the Lakers.
2:29
- What a great time in basketball history.
2:31
- Oh my gosh.
2:32
- Bad boy Pistons.
2:34
- Bad boy Pistons.
2:35
- Oh yeah.
2:36
- They had two years of just dominating
2:38
and then got really [inaudible] with the Bulls.
2:41
- Yeah, yeah.
2:42
I could see Magic Johnson.
2:43
Wilt's a good one too.
2:44
I don't know.
2:45
- So a lot of people will say Bill Russell
2:46
but the problem is there were eight teams I think
2:48
in the NBA when Bill Russell was winning championships
2:50
and so it's not saying that he's not great.
2:52
It's just like, well, you're playing the same eight teams.
2:54
Kind of like all the Yankees championships.
2:56
It's like they won the majority of their championships.
2:58
- Don't hate the player hate the game, stop it.
3:00
- Stop it.
3:01
There was like how many World Series of the Yankees win
3:03
where the playoffs were the World Series?
3:05
So as long as you won the pin it,
3:07
you got to go straight to the World Series.
3:09
Like so, and now all of a sudden they can't win
3:11
a World Series in decades.
3:12
It's like like Notre Dame.
3:14
They're like, we have the best teams ever.
3:16
He's like, man, you didn't play anybody.
3:18
- You beat Army five to two.
3:21
- In football, somehow.
3:23
- I don't know, I don't know.
3:25
- Okay, all right, life's the one
3:27
that you got to put the second on the goat list.
3:30
All right, who's the second goat?
3:32
So we've got Magic Johnson, Will Chamberlain.
3:35
- Oh man.
3:36
- I would probably say I'd probably have to go with Will.
3:40
- You'd have Wilt over Kareem?
3:41
Kareem never gets the play, man,
3:44
but Kareem actually played for a long time.
3:46
- Kareem got plenty of play apparently, so.
3:50
- No, Will got plenty of play.
3:51
- Will does well, okay, haven't he?
3:53
- Will does well, yeah, the will to the guy.
3:54
- Kareem played for like 25 years,
3:57
one several rings with Magic,
4:00
but then also like until LeBron recently passed him
4:03
was the all-time point scorer, leader.
4:06
I mean, maybe they actually did change the rules.
4:11
They outlawed the dunk because Kareem
4:14
was just dunking over everybody.
4:17
- Well, I mean, Kareem had six NBA championships,
4:20
Wilt only two.
4:22
He played 20 seasons versus 14 for Wilt, playoffs played.
4:26
He played an 18 playoffs versus 13 for Wilt.
4:30
All-Star games, 19, man.
4:32
- And I'm saying all this, Kareem's still not my number two
4:34
because Kareem still also played in that timeframe
4:37
where there just wasn't a lot of teams
4:40
and there wasn't a lot of competition.
4:41
- Yeah, a lot of centers were five foot two white guys.
4:45
- I would have been a center in the 1970s.
4:47
- You'd have dominated it.
4:49
- So as much as I don't like-
4:51
- They've gotten out of breath from that half court.
4:53
- [inaudible]-a-pee, [inaudible]-a-pee, mare-vitch.
4:55
That was unbelievable.
4:56
- As much as I don't like them,
4:57
I would probably have to put LeBron number two
5:00
on the goat list with all of his foibles,
5:03
with the complaining and the going from team to team
5:05
and the flopping and like all this kind of stuff.
5:08
- Of each book that he has.
5:09
- Yeah, I wanted it.
5:10
- Reading one page of like 70 different books.
5:12
- Just because-
5:14
- You should have him on the forging table.
5:15
I'm sure he would be riveting.
5:17
- Yeah, I bet.
5:18
- Read the first three sentences of each chapter.
5:20
- Because it's like, yes, he's won.
5:23
Like I don't want to put him there, but it's just like,
5:26
he's not, he's not a killer, right?
5:29
So Bird was a killer, like Kobe was a killer.
5:33
LeBron's not a killer, but he was great.
5:35
- I can't put him there because he's lost more finals
5:37
than he's won.
5:38
- Also true.
5:39
'Cause the only one you can give him a pass for
5:41
was when he was like 14 years old
5:42
and they went up against the Spurs, right?
5:44
And so like the Eastern Conference was basically
5:46
a U tournament and then they got there
5:49
and then he, you know, they got swept by the Spurs.
5:52
But the rest of them, like they were a Chris Bosch rebound
5:55
and a Ray Allen like prayer three
5:58
from losing three of four in Miami.
6:01
- Yes, I mean, they put together like the, like the,
6:04
I mean-
6:05
- They got the Avengers out there in there.
6:06
- Super duper team out in Miami because, you know,
6:09
you can say the first,
6:10
this first Celtic squad with Garnet Allen and Pierce
6:15
was like the original super team,
6:16
but that was all done through trades and everything else.
6:19
This was just three guys deciding to sign at the same time
6:22
whenever they expanded the cap.
6:24
I can get real cap nerdy, I won't.
6:26
But they all just decided to join the same squad
6:29
and then they lost to the Mavs.
6:32
- Mavs first year.
6:33
- They beat the Thunder.
6:34
- The Thunder who were probably a year or two too early.
6:37
- Yeah.
6:38
- And then they beat the Spurs.
6:39
- They beat the Spurs.
6:40
- And they got destroyed by the Spurs.
6:41
- That's right.
6:42
- The Spurs win that they had, they were this close to nine.
6:47
And for those listening, my fingers are really close together.
6:50
- Yeah, game six.
6:51
- But they were, yeah, game six.
6:52
I mean, they were like literally a Chris Bosch rebound
6:55
and a Ray Allen three from losing that one.
6:58
- Lost in all this is Durgnavisky
7:00
when they won the Mavs won the championship.
7:02
The route that the Mavs went through to win that championship.
7:05
So they obviously beat, you know, the big three heat
7:09
in the conference finals.
7:10
They beat the James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Katie Thunder.
7:13
This round before that, they had swept Kobe
7:15
and pals Lakers coming off of a championship.
7:18
And in the first round, they beat like the Trailblazers.
7:20
And that was like Brandon Roy in the Marcus Aldrich.
7:22
- Yeah.
7:23
- And like pre knee problems, Brandon Roy was really good.
7:25
- Dirk, the 2011 Dirk run was insane.
7:30
I mean, 'cause it was literally.
7:34
- Maybe the greatest run in the history of the playoffs.
7:35
- Yes, I mean, yeah.
7:37
And I say that as someone who despises the Mavs,
7:39
but Dirk's run in 2011,
7:42
'cause who was the second best player on that team?
7:45
- Sean Marion.
7:46
- Yeah, or Jason Terry.
7:48
- Tyson Chandler.
7:49
- Yeah.
7:50
- I mean, we're not exactly talking about.
7:52
- Not complete game changers.
7:53
- No, there's no pippin' on that team.
7:55
- They're all role players, they're all role players.
7:57
- She did bury a lot of people.
7:59
And just as Dirk buried people,
8:02
we're going to talk about the burial of Sarah.
8:06
- Wow.
8:06
- So I would love to get into that.
8:08
I was waiting for the transition.
8:09
This entire time, I've been Matt.
8:11
Come on, transition, transition.
8:12
I was about to do a hard transition,
8:13
like a speaking of AIDS, Sarah.
8:16
(laughing)
8:17
It's Magic Johnson joke.
8:18
It's Magic Johnson joke, guys.
8:20
So Matt, since you had the beautiful
8:22
velvety transition, how about you keep it going?
8:24
You're going to read all of chapter 23.
8:26
- Before I go, I'm changing my pick to Magic Johnson.
8:29
I'm with Jake now.
8:30
I think he makes a good argument.
8:31
That's a good thing.
8:32
- I think Kareem is a pretty decent argument.
8:34
The problem is the competition, the level of competition.
8:37
Like there, well, here's the thing.
8:40
Sorry, sorry.
8:41
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
8:42
- Second way's done.
8:43
- You get, you're building a basketball team?
8:46
- I just derailed because I apologize.
8:47
- No, it's fine.
8:48
It's fine.
8:49
You're building a basketball team.
8:51
And this team has to win one game to save your life, okay?
8:56
- In what era?
8:57
- No, like, we don't have to worry about era.
9:00
Everything else is different.
9:01
Like Mr. Newmont.
9:02
- Right, okay.
9:02
Yeah, Captain Gray area over there.
9:05
So you got to pick one guy, one guy.
9:08
Yeah, don't even hit the timer now at this point.
9:10
You're fired like Zach Todd's fired.
9:11
Okay.
9:13
You have to pick one center to be on your team.
9:17
You're picking a starting lineup
9:18
and this starting lineup has got to win a game
9:20
to save your life.
9:21
'Cause I know who I'm picking.
9:23
He has not been named yet.
9:25
- Yeah, I know who I would pick
9:26
and he's not been named either.
9:27
- Three, two, one, Shaquille O'Neal.
9:28
Exactly.
9:30
No one's taking will ain't nobody taking Kareem.
9:32
No one's taking Bill Russell.
9:33
We're taking the DC.
9:34
- DC, yeah, you're taking Prime Shack, AKA Shazam.
9:37
AKA M Diesel.
9:38
- Hey, the big cactus.
9:40
- Yeah, the big share.
9:42
- AKA Shaq Fu.
9:43
- Yeah, Shaq Fu.
9:45
- He had a lot of names.
9:46
Not unlike our God who went by a lot of names.
9:49
And so let's get into that.
9:51
- Okay, Matt.
9:51
All right, we've done this.
9:53
We've done this on us.
9:54
You got us, you know, off on the tangent.
9:55
Now we're back here.
9:56
So here we go.
9:57
- All of Genesis 23.
9:58
- All of Genesis 23.
9:58
Okay, here we go.
9:59
Sarah lived 127 years.
10:04
These are the years of the life of Sarah.
10:06
And Sarah died at Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron,
10:11
in the land of Canaan.
10:12
And Abraham went into mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
10:16
And Abraham rose up from before his dead
10:18
and said to the Hittites,
10:20
"I am a sojourner and a foreigner among you.
10:22
"Give me property among you for a burying place,
10:25
"that I may bury my dead out of my sight."
10:29
The Hittites answered Abraham,
10:31
"Hear us, my Lord, you are a prince of God,
10:33
"among us, bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs.
10:37
"None of us will withhold from the tomb,
10:40
"his tomb to hinder you from burying your dead."
10:43
Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites,
10:46
the people of the land.
10:47
And he said to them, "If you are willing,
10:48
"that I should bury my dead out of my sight,
10:50
"hear me and entreat me for Hebron the son of Zohar,
10:55
"that He may give me the cave of Macpella,
11:02
"which He owns.
11:03
"It is at the end of His field for the full price,
11:06
"let Him give it to me in your presence
11:08
"as property for a burying place."
11:10
Now, Ephron was sitting among the Hittites,
11:12
and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham
11:13
in the hearing of the Hittites.
11:15
"Of all who went in at the gate of His city,
11:18
"know, my Lord, hear me.
11:20
"I give you the field, and I give you the cave
11:22
"that is in it.
11:23
"In the sight of the sons of my people,
11:25
"I give it to you, bury your dead."
11:27
Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,
11:30
and he said to Ephron, "In the hearing of the people
11:33
"of the land, but if you will, hear me.
11:36
"I give the price of the field, except it from me,
11:40
"that I may bury my dead there."
11:42
Ephron answered Abraham, "My Lord, listen to me,
11:47
"a piece of land worth 400 shekels of silver.
11:51
"What is that between you and me?
11:53
"Bury your dead."
11:54
Abraham listened to Ephron,
11:55
and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver
11:58
that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites,
12:01
400 shekels of silver,
12:03
according to the weights current among the merchants.
12:06
So the field of Ephron in Macpella,
12:09
which was to the east of Mamre, Mamre,
12:14
the field with the cave that was in it,
12:16
and all the trees that were in the field,
12:18
throughout its whole area was made over to Abraham
12:21
as a possession in the presence of the Hittites,
12:23
before all who went into the gate of His city
12:26
after this, into the city, sorry.
12:29
I didn't see the period there.
12:30
After this, Abraham buried Sarah, his wife,
12:32
in the cave of the field of Macpella, west of Mamre,
12:36
that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan,
12:40
the field in the cave that is in it
12:43
were made over to Abraham as property
12:45
for a bearing place of the Hittites.
12:47
- Thanks, Matt. - Or by the Hittites.
12:48
- Thanks, Matt.
12:49
So Sarah, only gal in the Bible,
12:52
to have her age, death, and burial mentioned.
12:56
So that's either significant or non-significant.
12:59
I happen to believe that it's significant,
13:01
that we only get that level.
13:02
It's probably because the New Testament writers,
13:04
we're all members of the patriarchy,
13:06
and so at least that's what I've been reliably informed
13:09
by purple haired nose ringed morons on college campuses.
13:12
But yeah, let's talk about Sarah's death and burial
13:14
and anything that you guys wanna hit on chapter 23?
13:17
- Well, I mean, the significance of Sarah
13:21
bringing Isaac into the world, the child of promise.
13:24
I mean, I think there is some reverence here
13:27
that's being paid to her in that she,
13:30
like the mentioning of her age and her death,
13:34
and the stuff that Abraham goes through
13:38
to get a burial place for her.
13:41
I don't think we should miss that.
13:43
- Yeah, and she's mentioned at least two more times
13:47
in the Bible.
13:48
Here's one, first Peter is three, five, six,
13:51
says for this is how the holy women who hoped in God
13:55
used to adorn themselves by submitting themselves
13:57
to their own husbands as Sarah obeyed Abraham,
14:00
calling him Lord, and you are her children,
14:03
if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
14:06
So compare that to Mary.
14:10
I don't think she's mentioned anywhere else.
14:14
So there's a lot of weight put on Sarah.
14:17
I think she's mentioned again in Hebrews 11,
14:20
Hall of Faith.
14:21
- Yeah, that's the second time you mentioned the Hall of Faith.
14:24
Can you actually bring up the Hall of Faith
14:25
and so we can actually have those names while we do that?
14:29
But anything else on that?
14:30
- Yeah, I actually, ironically,
14:33
the accountant got really focused in on the 400 checkles.
14:35
- Nerd.
14:37
- Silver.
14:37
So just to kind of give some context here,
14:42
that's the equivalent of about seven
14:44
and a quarter pounds of silver.
14:45
You can compare that to some of the other land purchases
14:48
noted in the Bible, Omri bought the side of Samaria
14:51
for 6,000 checkles and first kings.
14:54
David bought the side of the temple
14:55
for 600 gold checkles and first chronicles.
14:58
The threshing floor itself fetched 50 checkles.
15:03
That's from second Samuel.
15:04
Jeremiah bought property at a greatly deflated price
15:07
of 17 checkles.
15:09
So Abraham's price here is more than likely
15:13
pretty exorbitant for what he was purchasing.
15:17
Which is interesting because you have Ephron
15:19
who's like, just take the land.
15:21
He just wants to give it as a gift
15:23
and Abraham's like, no, I'm gonna buy it from you.
15:26
And why would he do that?
15:29
You know, you would think, you know,
15:30
don't look a gift horse in the mouth, right?
15:32
He's just gonna give you the land
15:33
and yet you're gonna give him this exorbitant price
15:35
to purchase this land.
15:37
And if you kind of go back to like,
15:38
well, where does Abraham even get this funding?
15:41
Is that some of the Abimalek funding that he got
15:45
in restitution for Sarah itself?
15:48
So you kind of see that coming full circle
15:50
and that Sarah's death and her resting place
15:52
essentially could almost be looked at
15:54
as it's being financed by the indiscretion
15:56
that was made by Abraham with Abimalek.
16:00
But then turns around and makes sure he purchases this land
16:03
so that any future heirs of Ephron
16:07
could not come back and say, yeah, I want that back.
16:11
It's like, nope, ownership has been transferred.
16:14
It was sold, yeah.
16:15
Yeah, yeah.
16:16
Well, I mean, it had been promised to him, right?
16:20
But then he also purchased that, right?
16:23
And even if he bought it at a discount,
16:26
they could come back and be like, no, it wasn't enough.
16:28
Well, I was looking at that too.
16:29
Kind of as to the, like, what's culturally
16:32
how did this thing go down?
16:34
'Cause it was interesting how it was spelled out there.
16:36
The guy, you know, he's like, I'd like to have this land.
16:38
Abraham's like, I'd like to have this land.
16:39
And he's like, I will give it to you.
16:41
What I understand is that culturally,
16:43
that is how you were supposed to start negotiation.
16:48
The person that had the land was supposed to say,
16:50
I'll give it to you.
16:51
He's not really gonna give it to you.
16:53
That's just culturally how you do it.
16:55
And then you come back and he says, no, no,
16:58
I wanna buy it from you.
16:59
And then he says, okay.
17:01
And then he names a price.
17:02
And typically the price is high.
17:04
It's like a starting price that's exorbitant high
17:07
and then you negotiate from there.
17:09
But Abraham was like, all right.
17:11
Done.
17:12
I'm in.
17:13
Yeah.
17:14
So I think one of the other interesting points here
17:15
to talk about is also the fact that how much,
17:20
okay, so think about 400 shekels, okay.
17:23
A laborer at this time,
17:25
because I wanna go back to the point
17:26
that this is an exorbitant price.
17:27
And Abraham's basically just securing all future claims
17:31
to this potential land from Ephron's descendants.
17:34
Back then a laborer would make on average 10 shekels a year.
17:41
So it would literally take him a lifetime
17:45
to be able to purchase that.
17:47
Assuming that you live long enough,
17:50
because it's 10 shekels a year,
17:51
but it's also those 10 shekels
17:53
you gotta also pay for other things.
17:56
So how long is it gonna take you to save up 400
17:59
to purchase that?
18:00
And again, going back to, well,
18:03
how did Abraham get that much?
18:05
And again, just this, it just--
18:07
He sold drugs.
18:09
Well, I just think it's--
18:10
Don't tell me you didn't think it.
18:12
Well, I mean, in a sense, he almost,
18:15
he kind of sold his wife, I mean, in a sense.
18:18
I mean, gave her to Abimaleg, it's my sister.
18:21
And then he was like, here's a thousand shekels,
18:23
like, sorry about that, please forgive me.
18:26
I mean, it's hard not to fathom
18:28
that at least some of these 400 shekels
18:30
were obtained through that initial indiscretion.
18:34
Right, right.
18:35
Anything else on Genesis 23, before we move on?
18:41
Is that a yes, or is that like a, you got gas, or?
18:44
Yeah, I may have a little bit of both.
18:46
Wow.
18:47
Well, no, I like the idea.
18:52
Here's what I wrote down.
18:53
I said, Jesus has rights, has all rights
18:55
because he created all things.
18:57
And then I put down, but he also has possession
19:00
because he purchased it with blood.
19:02
So like we've been twice owned or twice owned by Christ,
19:06
both once through creation and then once
19:08
because he purchased us through his blood.
19:11
So for trying to tie in a little bit
19:13
to this purchase of the land,
19:14
that's one thing we look back at,
19:16
because Abraham received this land through promise,
19:21
but he also purchased the land and has a deed on it.
19:27
Yeah, when you mentioned this is still around.
19:32
Yeah, earlier, yeah.
19:33
So where it's in Hebron, the West Bank,
19:36
there's a big building around it now.
19:39
Of course, the cave, and that's where all the patriarchs
19:41
are buried.
19:42
So Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, I don't know.
19:47
Sarah, Sarah, yes, of course.
19:50
Yeah, and I may be wrong.
19:53
I mean, there's more of those two I could pull it up,
19:56
but I don't remember.
19:58
Yeah, this gets mentioned quite a few times,
20:00
even in just in Genesis,
20:02
'cause Jacob asks Joseph to swear to take him back
20:06
when he dies, and then I think Joseph,
20:08
I'm pretty sure Joseph requests to be taken back there
20:13
when he dies.
20:14
So it's obviously a significant place and still still so.
20:19
And then you say it's the second holiest.
20:22
I believe so.
20:24
I mean, I could be wrong.
20:24
Some people say it's the second holiest site.
20:26
Okay, very good.
20:28
Well, we're gonna go ahead and get into Genesis 24.
20:30
Now, Genesis 24 is rather lengthy,
20:33
and so I thought it would be unfair
20:34
to have one of you lovely gentlemen read it.
20:36
So this is what we're gonna do.
20:38
We're gonna switch off every paragraph,
20:39
and we're gonna go, and we're gonna start clockwise.
20:42
I'll start us off, and then we'll go Jake,
20:44
and then we'll go Matt.
20:45
Most of the paragraphs are roughly the same,
20:47
some are rather short, and so I'm reading ESV,
20:50
Jake is ESV, Matt, ESV, Eric, same.
20:54
Very good.
20:55
All right, guys, well, let's go ahead and get in.
20:56
We're gonna talk about Isaac and Rebecca.
20:57
Genesis 24, starting in verse one.
21:00
Now, Abraham was old, well-advanced in years,
21:02
and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
21:04
Abraham said to his servant,
21:05
the oldest of his household,
21:06
who had charged all that he had,
21:08
put your hand under my thigh,
21:09
that I may make you swear by the Lord,
21:11
the God of heaven and the God of earth,
21:13
that you will not take a wife for my son,
21:15
from my daughters of the Canaanites,
21:17
among whom I dwell,
21:18
but will go to my country and to my kindred
21:20
and take a wife for my son, Isaac.
21:22
The servant said to him,
21:24
perhaps a woman may not be willing to follow me
21:26
to this land.
21:27
Must I then take your son back to the land
21:29
from which you came?
21:30
Abraham said to him,
21:31
see to it that you do not take my son back there.
21:34
The Lord, the God of heaven,
21:35
who took me from my father's house
21:37
and from the land of my kindred,
21:38
and who spoke to me and swore to me
21:40
to your offspring, I will give this land,
21:42
he will send his angel before you,
21:44
and you shall take a wife for my son from there.
21:47
But if the woman is not willing to follow you,
21:49
then you will be free from this oath of mine.
21:52
Only you must not take my son back there.
21:54
So the servant put his hand under the thigh
21:56
of Abraham's master and swore to him
21:58
concerning this matter.
21:59
Then the servant took 10 of his master's camels
22:02
and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts
22:04
from his master.
22:05
And he arose and he went to Mesopotamia
22:07
to the city of Nahor.
22:09
And he made the camels kneel down outside the city
22:11
by the well of water at the time of evening,
22:13
the time when women go out to draw water.
22:16
And he said, oh Lord God of my master Abraham,
22:18
please grant me success today
22:20
and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.
22:24
Behold, I am standing by the spring of water
22:26
and the daughters of the men of the city
22:28
are coming out to draw water.
22:30
Let the young woman to whom I shall say,
22:32
please let down your jar that I may drink
22:35
and who shall say drink and I will water your camels,
22:38
let her be the one whom you have appointed
22:41
for your servant Isaac.
22:42
By this, I shall know that you have shown steadfast love
22:46
to my master.
22:47
- Before he'd finished speaking,
22:50
ahold, Rebecca, who was born to Matthew Al,
22:54
the son of Milka, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother,
22:57
came out with her water jar on her shoulder.
23:00
The young woman was very attractive in appearance,
23:03
a maiden whom no man had known.
23:05
She went down to the spring and filled her jar
23:07
and came up.
23:08
Then the servant ran to meet her and said,
23:10
please give me a little water to drink from your jar.
23:13
She said, drink my Lord.
23:14
And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand
23:16
and gave him a drink.
23:17
When she had finished giving him a drink,
23:19
she said, I will draw water for your camels also
23:22
until they have finished drinking.
23:24
So she quickly emptied her jar and into the trough
23:28
and ran again to the well to draw water.
23:30
And she drew for all his camels.
23:32
The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord
23:35
had prospered his journey or not.
23:37
- When the camels had finished drinking,
23:39
the man took a gold ring,
23:41
weighing a half-shekel and two bracelets for her arms weighing,
23:44
10 gold shekels and said,
23:46
please tell me whose daughter you are.
23:48
Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?
23:51
She said to him, I am the daughter of Matthew Al,
23:53
the son of Milka, whom she bored in a whore.
23:56
She said, she added, we have plenty of both straw and fodder
24:02
and room to spend the night.
24:04
The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord and said,
24:06
blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,
24:10
who has not forsaken his steadfast love
24:13
and his faithfulness toward my master.
24:16
As for me, the Lord has led me in the way
24:20
to the house of my master's kinsmen.
24:22
Then the young woman ran and told her mother's household
24:25
about these things.
24:26
- Rebecca had a brother whose name was Laban.
24:28
Laban ran out toward the man to the spring.
24:31
As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets
24:33
on his sister's arms and heard the words
24:34
of Rebecca, his sister, thus the man spoke to me,
24:37
he went to the man and behold,
24:39
he was standing by the camels at the spring.
24:41
He said, come in, oh blessed of the Lord,
24:43
why do you stand outside?
24:45
For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.
24:47
So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels
24:50
and gave straw and fodder to the camels
24:51
and there was water to wash his feet
24:53
and the feet of the men who were with him.
24:55
Then food was set before him to eat.
24:57
But he said, I will not eat until I have said
24:59
what I have to say, he said, speak on.
25:01
- So he said, I am Abraham's servant.
25:04
The Lord has greatly blessed my master
25:06
and he has become great.
25:08
He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold,
25:11
male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys.
25:14
And Sarah, my master's wife bore a son to my master
25:17
when she was old and to him he has given all that he has.
25:21
My master made me swear saying,
25:23
you shall not take a wife for my son
25:26
from the daughters of the Canaanites
25:28
and whose land I dwell.
25:30
But you shall go to my father's house and to my clan
25:32
and take a wife for my son.
25:34
I said to my master, perhaps the woman will not follow me.
25:37
But he said to me, the Lord for whom I have walked
25:42
will send his angel with you and prosper your way.
25:45
You shall take a wife for my son, from my clan
25:47
and from my father's house.
25:49
Then you will be free from my oath.
25:52
When you come to my clan and if they will not give her to you,
25:55
you will be free from my oath.
25:56
- I came today to the spring and said,
25:59
oh Lord, the God of my master Abraham,
26:02
if now you are prospering the way that I go,
26:05
behold, I am standing by the spring of water.
26:07
Let the virgin who comes out to draw water
26:09
to whom I shall say, please give me a little water
26:12
from your jar to drink and who will say to me drink
26:15
and I'll draw for your camels also.
26:18
Let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed
26:20
for my master's son.
26:22
- Before I'd finished speaking in my heart,
26:25
behold, Rebecca came out with her water jar on her shoulder
26:28
and she went down to the spring and drew water.
26:31
I said to her, please let me drink.
26:33
She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said,
26:36
drink and I will give your camels, camels drink also.
26:40
So I drank and she gave the camels drink also.
26:44
Then I asked her, whose daughter are you?
26:46
She said, the daughter of Bethwell, Nehor's son,
26:49
whom milk aboard to him.
26:50
So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arm
26:54
that I bow my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord,
26:57
the God of my master Abraham,
26:59
who had led me to the right way to take the daughter
27:02
of my master's kinsmen for his son.
27:04
Now then, if you're going to show steadfast love
27:08
and faithfulness to my master, tell me,
27:10
if not, tell me, that I might turn to the right hand
27:14
or to the left.
27:15
Then Laban and Bethwell answered and said,
27:17
the thing has come from the Lord.
27:19
We cannot speak to you bad or good.
27:21
Behold, Rebecca is before you, take her and go
27:23
and let her be the wife of your master's son,
27:26
as the Lord had spoken.
27:28
- When Abraham's servant heard their words,
27:30
he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord.
27:33
And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold
27:37
and garments and gave them to Rebecca.
27:40
He also gave to her brother and to her mother,
27:42
costly ornaments.
27:43
And he and the men who are with him ate and drank
27:46
and they spent the night there.
27:47
When they arose in the morning, he said,
27:49
send me away to my master.
27:51
Her brother and her mother said, let the young women remain
27:54
with us a while, at least 10 days after that she may go.
27:58
But he said to them, do not delay me,
27:59
since the Lord has prospered my way,
28:01
send me away, then I may go to my master.
28:04
They said, let us call the young woman and ask her.
28:07
And they called Rebecca and said to her,
28:09
will you go with this man?
28:11
She said, I will go.
28:13
So they sent away Rebecca, their sister and her nurse
28:17
and Abraham's servant and his men.
28:19
And they blessed Rebecca and said to her,
28:21
our sister, may you become thousands of 10,000s.
28:25
And may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him.
28:28
- Then Rebecca and her young women arose
28:33
and rode off, erode on the camels and followed the man.
28:36
Thus the servant took Rebecca and went his way.
28:40
Now Isaac had returned from Bierhala, Roy,
28:43
and was dwelling in the neck ab.
28:46
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening.
28:51
And he lifted up his eyes and saw and behold,
28:53
there were camels coming.
28:55
And Rebecca lifted up her eyes.
28:57
And when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel
29:00
and said to the servant, who is that man
29:03
walking the field to meet us?
29:05
The servant said, it is my master.
29:07
So she took her veil and covered herself.
29:10
And the servant told Isaac all the things he had done.
29:13
Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah,
29:17
his mother, and took Rebecca.
29:18
And she became his wife and he loved her.
29:21
So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
29:24
- Okay, very good.
29:26
Well, first time for everything.
29:27
That's first time we did a team reading
29:28
of a very, very long chapter.
29:30
So gotta be honest, I was a little bit concerned
29:33
about this chapter, but Jake and I actually talked about it
29:35
in Sunday school 'cause it's not called ABF.
29:37
It's not called adult bible fellowship
29:39
because that would be stupid.
29:40
So in our Sunday school class this morning,
29:42
we were talking about Genesis 24.
29:44
And you had a very interesting kind of thought experiment
29:46
as a pertain to the scriptures, so go ahead.
29:48
- Yeah, so I think it's kind of interesting here.
29:51
One of the first things the servant does
29:53
is he's asking for a sign from God.
29:55
Okay, and I think all of us could probably point to a time
29:58
in our lives where we go, you pray and you're just,
30:01
if you will just show me a sign.
30:03
If you will just show me a sign.
30:04
And honestly, I think we would have a very, very difficult
30:07
time pointing that out, which would mean obviously
30:12
this person you would think would have a difficult time
30:15
pointing out like, well, okay, I asked her for a drink
30:19
and then she offered to water the camels.
30:20
Okay, but you need to understand how,
30:23
like what task he's asking.
30:27
Because a camel that has gone a few days without water
30:30
can drink as much as 25 gallons of water.
30:33
Ancient jars used for drawing water
30:35
usually held no more than three gallons.
30:38
In other words, the offer, what he's asking here,
30:42
would have involved perhaps 80 to 100 drawings from the well.
30:46
So it would have been like what she's doing in hours.
30:51
Yeah, keep in mind, keep in mind.
30:53
This is not something where she's like,
30:54
he's asking for a drink and then he says,
30:56
oh, and water my camels, she's offered.
30:58
She's offered to water the camels.
31:01
And so this is such a clear sign because there's no way
31:05
that anyone would offer to water to do 80 to 100 drawings
31:09
from a well over hours at a time.
31:12
No one else would offer that except for someone
31:15
who has been placed there by God to do so.
31:19
So it was such an obvious sign.
31:21
And I think that there's, I'm gonna point out
31:25
to another interesting like historical sign.
31:28
In 1429, the prince who was later to be crowned Charles
31:31
the seventh of France was told that a teenage girl
31:34
have reportedly received messages from saints
31:37
urging her to support his kingship
31:39
and drive the English out of France.
31:41
After he agreed to give her an audience,
31:43
he decided to conduct a test.
31:45
He had someone else sit on his throne
31:47
while he himself stood among the courtiers in attendance.
31:50
He thought if the girl were receiving supernatural guidance,
31:53
she would immediately detect the imposter
31:55
and pick him out in a crowd, though they had never met.
32:00
He was impressed when the girl walked into the throne room
32:02
and after only a minute of indecision turned away
32:05
from the throne, strode up to him and bowed before him.
32:08
He took this as a divine sign
32:09
that the girl Joan of Arc had been chosen by God
32:13
to liberate France, okay?
32:15
Now, you don't have to really know the story,
32:18
I think most of us know the story of Joan of Arc
32:20
and what happened there.
32:21
The English were driven out of France.
32:23
She met a pretty dreadful end.
32:27
And she did have some initial success
32:30
and the dolphin was crowned the king
32:33
in the wake of her success, but it was short-lived.
32:36
And so to him, he's looking for this same type of sign, right?
32:41
Was she truly divinely inspired?
32:44
If she is, then she would know to find me in the crowd.
32:47
But it's so hard to kind of point to say,
32:51
okay, here's this thing I think I can point to that.
32:54
This is a clear sign from God that this is what I'm supposed to do.
32:58
I think it's a lot easier to see the fingerprints of God
33:01
after you've been through stuff.
33:03
So you can, so, you know, and I say the fingerprints
33:06
because those are left behind.
33:08
You know, it's stuff that's happened.
33:10
You could see his hands in it.
33:11
It's like, you know what?
33:12
I went through this scenario and then later on,
33:15
I can actually look back on that and go,
33:18
there's no way I would have gotten through that without God.
33:20
So I can see his fingerprints all over that.
33:23
So I think that, I think it's interesting here
33:26
because he's asking for such an outlandish sign.
33:30
And I think that would be kind of an interesting experiment
33:33
for all of us to do.
33:34
It's like, when you pray and you are asking for these signs,
33:37
how outlandish are you,
33:38
'cause things outside the scope of what God can do,
33:41
how outlandish are you being?
33:42
Anyways, so that's, I mean,
33:47
I think there's probably a discussion around like, you know,
33:50
signs and I have some stories about some personal stuff
33:54
that if we have time, I could share, but.
33:57
- It seems like, you know,
33:59
there's to be caution thrown to the wind here on signs,
34:04
'cause some people will take that too far.
34:08
They'll be seeing images in the clouds
34:12
and then be like, well, that's clearly a sign
34:13
and I should go do this thing.
34:15
You know what I mean?
34:16
- Right.
34:17
- Yeah.
34:18
- So I do think there's some short,
34:19
I think there's some shortfalls for folks on that, right?
34:24
- Well, you can kind of look at it if you,
34:27
I mean, it's almost like Oracle type thinking, okay?
34:30
Like, I consult the Oracle and they say,
34:32
here's the sign I'm seeing
34:34
and this is what you're supposed to go do
34:36
that kind of puts God on a corner, right?
34:38
It's like, I'm trying to decide this one thing.
34:41
The alternative would be to kind of leave matters open-ended
34:45
and to simply look for God's hand in circumstances
34:48
as he sovereignly works them out, okay?
34:50
So again, I'm not saying that there won't be any signs
34:55
from God, but I think that they're so hard to see
34:58
and can be, I think, so unclear
35:02
that I think until you actually go through things
35:06
and I wanna talk about the open-ended state,
35:07
when until you go through those instances
35:10
and you can kind of see how God's in his sovereignty
35:14
has worked through those instances
35:16
and you can see his fingerprints all over what happened.
35:20
I think that's whenever it makes things a little clearer.
35:23
That whole footprints in this hand,
35:28
there was two sets of footprints and then I only see one.
35:31
Yeah, that's 'cause I was carrying you.
35:33
- I remember being a really immature believer
35:37
that was struggling with just the omnipresence of God
35:41
and this is gonna sound so silly.
35:43
Now, I've got to know that we've got to follow up on it,
35:44
and then I'm driving and I have had these hiccups
35:48
for like 45 minutes, it's super annoying.
35:50
And I just remember going, you know what, God?
35:52
I know you literally can do anything.
35:54
Can you take away my hiccups for me right now?
35:55
And literally they stopped immediately.
35:57
(laughing)
35:59
Could I point that, you know, is that a miracle?
36:01
I don't know, not necessarily that, but I mean,
36:04
they went away and I was like, cool, that was awesome.
36:08
But I also didn't take that and go,
36:10
maybe I should do that next time I have hiccups
36:12
and people in the car and be like, check this out.
36:14
Go and take away my hiccups.
36:14
You know, I didn't take it like that.
36:16
Now, later on I was having an issue with some anger
36:20
and literally to the point where I felt like I could feel
36:24
the presence of demons, like literally oppressing me.
36:28
And I do remember like very fervently praying one night.
36:33
I was just like, I can't do this anymore.
36:34
This is it, I can't do this, it's overwhelming
36:37
and I asked for that to be removed.
36:39
And then I went to sleep and I remember waking up
36:41
and feeling like a weight of a thousand pounds
36:46
had been just taken off of me.
36:49
And it was obvious in that moment
36:52
that God had done something miraculous in my life
36:55
and not really show me a sign as much as just answer prayer.
36:58
So I don't know where I was going with that other than
37:01
just those were my two basic, like very immature experience
37:04
and then maybe a little bit more mature experience with God.
37:07
- Yeah, faith is built in the rear view mirror.
37:09
I think that's why it's important to write out our prayers
37:11
and then write how, come back to those and write
37:15
how God has answered those prayers
37:17
'cause then we can go back and look
37:19
at how those have unfolded.
37:22
And those can be our kind of modern day standing stones.
37:26
Yeah, I think those are all really cool examples.
37:31
- I think Matt, there's a,
37:33
so there's difference between what you're describing
37:35
which is what Jack said, which is fingerprints.
37:37
So you can't connect with the dots looking forward.
37:39
You can only connect the dots looking backwards.
37:41
But then there's also the idea of being expectant for signs.
37:45
Like I'm expecting God to show me something.
37:48
And what I mentioned this morning,
37:49
Jake is kind of what Jobius said it's about.
37:51
At certain points you have to pray guests go.
37:54
So I was on a couple of coaching calls
37:56
with some guys in our Dominion program here recently.
37:58
And we were talking about,
38:00
I was trying to explain to them the concept of being
38:01
over the X 'cause some of these guys
38:03
are in different places in their career.
38:05
And the concept of being over the X
38:07
is like if you're in a military plane
38:09
and you're dropping a payload,
38:10
let's just say it's a bomb over an enemy place.
38:12
There's an X to where that means
38:14
you're exactly where you're supposed to be.
38:16
If you're a click or two away from that spot,
38:18
the payload's not gonna go where it needs to go.
38:20
But when you're over the X,
38:21
you're exactly where God has you exactly where he should be.
38:25
And I remember a few years ago,
38:28
there was a guy that was basically trying to get me
38:30
to come to work for him.
38:31
And I was like, bro, I'm over the X
38:32
when it comes on dawn in life.
38:34
This is before we became the number one show from in,
38:36
the Christian men and this was before dominion
38:38
and before any of that.
38:39
I was like, no, I'm over the X.
38:40
I'm exactly where I need to be.
38:41
And I can tell it wasn't exactly landing
38:43
with them no pun intended.
38:44
But what I basically said is like,
38:46
have you ever tried to navigate a trail
38:47
with a crappy flashlight?
38:50
And like, even if you haven't,
38:51
you can at least understand what that looks like.
38:52
So you got this crappy flashlight.
38:53
Maybe it's going dead or it's just a bad flashlight.
38:56
And so when you point it down the trail,
38:58
you can tell it's a trail, you could surmise.
39:02
Okay, I think it's gonna bend to the left up here.
39:04
Okay, that's a bush or a bear, not quite sure.
39:06
Like you're looking out in the distance.
39:08
But if you point it at your feet,
39:11
you can take the very next step with full confidence, right?
39:14
And so that's one of the things I tell people with God
39:17
is it's like, what is it?
39:18
Was it a tozer or somebody where it's like,
39:21
it's obedience in the same direction, right?
39:23
Over time, yeah, it's something like that.
39:26
So you're going in the same direction,
39:27
but it's like, the word is a lamp unto our feet,
39:29
but we want it to be a floodlight.
39:31
We want to be able to see the entire pathway
39:32
as we go forward.
39:33
So that's my personal concern.
39:35
And we talked about a little bit this morning
39:37
about waiting for signs.
39:39
And the sign is always from people,
39:41
it's never about what's right next step.
39:43
They always want a sign about what the end of the trail
39:46
looks like.
39:46
It's like, bro, you got a crappy flashlight.
39:48
Just like the end of the trail,
39:50
you'll get there when you get there kind of thing.
39:51
- Little wins in the right direction.
39:53
- Right.
39:54
- I mean, that's it.
39:55
I mean, and I do like the, I mean,
39:57
I think if you're looking for signs
40:00
in terms of long-term direction,
40:03
I don't, you're not going to get those.
40:05
I'm sorry, I mean, I think the signs, again,
40:10
I think if you were going to, I'll share one story.
40:13
So when my mom passed away,
40:17
I remember just being out, it was rainy.
40:20
And I was just by myself and was praying
40:22
and just was just, I went two weeks after she passed.
40:27
I was just an unbearable grief.
40:29
And I remember just saying, like,
40:31
I just want to know that she's with you
40:34
because faith was not something
40:37
that was super promoted in our home
40:40
and was just so like, I just,
40:42
I was like, I know she believed,
40:44
but I don't know, I don't know that she really believed.
40:49
And so I was just like, God, I just want to know,
40:51
like just give me some sort of sign,
40:54
like just that she's with you, that she's okay.
40:57
And like right around that time, a cricket,
41:02
a cricket just came up and started chirping in the rain.
41:09
I don't know if you guys know this, but they don't do that.
41:12
And so I don't know if that was a sign.
41:15
I've taken it as such, and I think a lot of times,
41:18
but I think a lot of times maybe that we just have
41:21
these things that it could have been a sign
41:24
and maybe I'm just clinging to it.
41:25
I don't know, but I've decided that it's like,
41:28
no, this is something that was meaningful
41:30
to me in that moment, that it's like,
41:32
if this is true, if that really was a sign from God,
41:35
that my mom's there with him and happier
41:39
than I can ever possibly fathom, I'm gonna take it.
41:43
- Right.
41:44
- I'm gonna take it.
41:45
If it's not true, then fine, I'll find out later.
41:47
- Sure.
41:48
- Well, I think, to tell us earlier point,
41:50
I think we can become paralyzed with the weight of signs
41:54
and we can pray for signs.
41:56
And most of the time when that happens,
41:57
I would say that we're paralyzed
42:00
because we're praying in generalities
42:02
or in like the long-term outlook of our life.
42:06
And so we are looking for this,
42:08
like if I'm looking at a career change
42:12
or I'm looking at the college to go to
42:14
or whatever, the girl I'm gonna marry,
42:16
it's like we want the finished product.
42:20
And so I think we can get paralyzed.
42:22
And I think, what did you say earlier, pray?
42:24
- Pray gesco.
42:25
- Pray gesco, yeah.
42:26
And I think looking back to Nehemiah,
42:29
what a perfect example of that book is of pray.
42:32
I mean, he prayed, he knew, and then he went.
42:34
Like he was the epitome of, I know this is God,
42:39
I know God is in the work,
42:40
but I also know that God expects me to be a part of the work.
42:45
And so we shouldn't get paralyzed and stop.
42:49
And because if you're not moving forward,
42:51
like you're moving backwards and you're,
42:56
I think you're in danger of being in sin
42:59
by not acting at all because you're paralyzed
43:02
looking for this grandiose vision or sign from God.
43:05
And I think God sometimes like, take a step.
43:08
- Yeah, that whole thing of,
43:11
there's the old, I guess it's a joke.
43:13
I don't really know if that would be the right way
43:15
to praise it, but the guy standing on the roof
43:18
and the, with the flood waters rising.
43:20
And the, he's standing on the roof and they send a car through
43:25
and they said, hey, there's a big storm coming,
43:28
where's it gonna flood, gotta evacuate you,
43:30
let's get you out of here.
43:31
He's like, nope, God's gonna save me.
43:33
Water start rising, boat comes by.
43:35
Hey, get on the boat, you gotta get out of here.
43:39
Nope, God's gonna save me.
43:41
He's gonna, he's gonna save me.
43:43
Water's rise even further to the point
43:45
that boats can't even come get him
43:46
and a helicopter comes by and he's like, all right,
43:47
we gotta get you out of here.
43:48
We're evacuating and he's like, nope, God's gonna save me.
43:52
Water's rise up even further, develop him, he drowns,
43:56
he dies, he goes to heaven, gets in front of God
43:59
and he says, why didn't you save me?
44:02
I asked you, you guys, I sent a car, I sent a boat,
44:04
I sent a helicopter.
44:06
(laughing)
44:08
It's like, what are you looking for?
44:09
- You gotta do something.
44:11
- That's right.
44:11
- Well guys, as we wrap up our discussion of Genesis 23 and 24,
44:16
to put a bow on this whole basketball thing.
44:19
(laughing)
44:21
Now we can't spend a whole lot of time on this
44:22
'cause we gotta get out of here
44:23
and there's been a couple of weird little edit things
44:25
on this episode already.
44:27
You've gotta give me your starting five
44:30
and your sixth man, okay?
44:34
This is the team that they gotta win a game.
44:37
It doesn't matter who the other team is, right?
44:39
So don't get into the, well, this team's bitter defense
44:41
in the blah, blah, blah system.
44:42
Nope, nope.
44:43
Same head coach, same stadium, same crowd, all that.
44:45
A starting five and a sixth man,
44:47
you gotta, they've gotta win this game for you to survive.
44:50
Do y'all want me to go first or last?
44:52
'Cause I already know mine.
44:53
I wrote it down.
44:54
- I already know mine.
44:54
- I don't wanna influence it.
44:55
I don't wanna influence it.
44:56
You said you already know yours?
44:57
- I already know mine.
44:58
- Okay, so you go ahead and give me yours.
44:59
Browning's working on his and Matt, we'll see.
45:01
So give me your starting five, start with the one.
45:03
- Okay, one would be magic.
45:05
- Okay.
45:06
- Two would be Jordan.
45:08
Three, I would actually have Kobe play the three
45:11
'cause he could.
45:13
Four would be bird, playing power forward.
45:15
Five would be Shaq.
45:17
- And who's your sixth man?
45:18
- And my sixth man, mainly because I, honestly,
45:23
it would probably be LeBron.
45:29
- You said it, you already said it, all right.
45:31
Let's go Matt, give us your starting five.
45:34
Matt, a fantastic basketball player.
45:35
I'm sure you've thought about this before.
45:37
Start with the one.
45:38
This team's gotta win or you die.
45:41
- Okay, so I think I would go Magic Johnson number one,
45:46
one of the greatest point cards of all time,
45:47
if not the greatest.
45:49
Michael Jordan number two,
45:50
the greatest basketball player of all time.
45:52
I would go Larry Bird at number three.
45:54
I would go, oh man, I'd probably go
45:59
Kareem at the four and Shaq at the five.
46:04
- Twin towers.
46:06
- Like you gotta, yeah, you have to deal with the Twin towers.
46:10
- And if you double anybody on that team.
46:13
- Problem, and who's your sixth man?
46:15
- Sixth man, oh goodness.
46:17
- It's another center.
46:18
(laughing)
46:19
- No, I would probably go,
46:22
I'm a homer here, so I'll go with Isaiah Thomas
46:27
as a sixth man.
46:28
- That's not bad.
46:29
- Okay, all right, Browning.
46:31
- All right, I got Jordan one, Bird two,
46:34
Kareem, then Magic, then Shaq.
46:37
- Wait, so your Jordan's playing point guard?
46:39
- No, no, I just, I just put five people.
46:43
- No, no, no, no, no, who's your point guard?
46:46
- Magic.
46:46
- Okay, your shooting guard.
46:48
- Jordan.
46:50
- Small Ford.
46:51
- Bird.
46:52
- Power Ford.
46:53
- Kareem.
46:55
- Center.
46:55
- Shaq.
46:57
- Sixth man.
46:58
- Durant.
46:58
- Durant.
46:59
- Oh.
47:00
- Yeah.
47:01
- Oh.
47:02
- Cupcakes.
47:03
- Gross.
47:03
- You can't be the cupcakes with them.
47:06
- Where is our starting five the same?
47:08
- No, I have no idea.
47:09
- It actually was.
47:10
- Oh, wait, was it?
47:10
- Yeah.
47:11
- It sounded the same way.
47:12
- Well, I got good news for you.
47:13
All three of you are wrong.
47:14
You're all going to die because my team
47:16
is going to beat all those teams, okay?
47:18
- Oh, is it, is it the monsters?
47:19
(laughing)
47:21
- The monsters.
47:22
All right, so you got to think we got,
47:24
we got a new game here.
47:25
- That's funny.
47:26
- And so on a lot of y'all's teams,
47:28
a lot of size, a lot of ball hogging,
47:30
not a whole lot shooting.
47:31
Steph at the one.
47:32
- I mean, that's a good pick.
47:34
- MJ at the two.
47:35
So I think MJ is on everybody's team at the two.
47:38
I'm taking Bird at the three.
47:40
And I'm shocked that none of y'all
47:43
picked the big fundamental.
47:45
Timmy Duncan, the best power for ever.
47:47
- I actually thought about that.
47:49
- Ever, at the four, ever, at the four.
47:53
Shaq at the five.
47:54
Shaq are starting at the center forever.
47:56
- Yeah, that's consistent.
47:57
- And my first guy off the bench,
47:58
give me the mamba.
47:59
Give me Kobe coming off the bench
48:02
as a Thomas can go cry in the corner.
48:04
- Well, okay.
48:04
- All that now.
48:05
- My team with destroyals.
48:06
- No.
48:07
(laughing)
48:08
- All of those are good teams.
48:10
I gotta have some shooting.
48:11
- Gotta have some scoring.
48:12
- So what do you do though?
48:14
Because really it comes down to the differences.
48:17
Is does Isaiah Thomas beat Kobe in a one-on-one situation?
48:20
'Cause a lot of those guys are the same.
48:22
The answer is no to that, right?
48:23
Obviously.
48:24
- My issue with both of your teams.
48:26
Kareem and Shaq play by the basket.
48:29
And you are taking away your best player's strength,
48:32
which is getting to the basket.
48:34
Michael Jordan is going to get to the basket.
48:37
That's his biggest strength.
48:38
And you got two lane cloggers.
48:39
- So if I put Durant in there
48:42
and then bring Kareem off the bench,
48:43
you okay with that?
48:45
If you're just--
48:46
- You can put Durant at four.
48:47
- That would work.
48:48
- That would work.
48:49
- But then Timmy Duncan on my team
48:50
is just gonna eat Kevin Durant up from that little elbow.
48:53
Hit him with that big fundamental.
48:55
I'm telling y'all.
48:55
- Okay.
48:56
- Don't Tim Duncan love?
48:57
- Okay, let me--
48:58
- That's not for him ever.
48:59
- I would put him at the five.
49:00
- I wanna redo.
49:00
(laughing)
49:01
I want Chazi Billups.
49:03
I want Meta World Peace.
49:04
(laughing)
49:05
- Meta World Peace.
49:06
(laughing)
49:08
- Rashid, that's right.
49:09
- Rashid, that'd be a big fight.
49:10
- I want Jermaine O'Neal.
49:12
I want Ben Wallace.
49:15
- Yeah.
49:16
- And I want Rashid Wallace.
49:18
- You want the 19?
49:19
- You want the 2001 Pistons.
49:21
- Yeah, this team--
49:22
(laughing)
49:23
I don't know where wins did not play for the Pistons.
49:24
- This team wouldn't beat the Suns on a Tuesday.
49:27
But okay, yeah, hopefully your life's in line.
49:28
- Bunch, no.
49:29
- You just fight your Pistons.
49:30
- Yeah, we're on our test was on the Pacers
49:32
whenever that went down.
49:33
- My life's on the line, like yes,
49:35
that's probably not the team I'm going to pick.
49:36
But speaking of your life being on the line,
49:38
if you have not put your faith
49:42
in the Lord our Savior, Jesus Christ,
49:45
your life is on the line.
49:47
- And it doesn't matter who you put out.
49:49
- And it does not matter who you put out for.
49:51
But if you are in Christ,
49:53
you have salvation in the Lord on the day of judgment.
49:55
- I'm pretty sure that Matt just picked Jesus
49:57
as his point guard.
49:58
- Bam, Jesus sat the one, Jesus sat the one.
50:02
That was actually the answer.
50:03
