This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
0:51
I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
0:54
Guys, welcome back to the forging table, the mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men
0:57
to push back darkness with content that forges spiritual, mental, and physical resilience.
1:02
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:05
by digging into God's Word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:09
us.
1:10
That is Ryan.
1:11
That is Derek.
1:12
That is Eric.
1:13
Guys, we are digging into Galatian 6, so let's go ahead and get after it.
1:14
I have a question from the beginning, and this has been a burning question for me.
1:17
From the first time I read Galatian 6 during this whole period, because I wanted to get
1:20
y'all's feedback on it, because I read several commentaries and got some different feedback,
1:24
but the very first scripture, so Galatian 6, 1, brothers, if anyone is caught in any
1:28
transgression, you are a spiritual or you are a spiritual should sorry, wait, you who are
1:33
spiritual.
1:34
Let's just start completely over brothers.
1:36
If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in
1:40
a spirit of gentleness.
1:43
Keep watch on yourself, lest you to be tempted.
1:45
So literally in my notes, I wrote gentle how catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.
1:53
Okay.
1:54
What is honey?
1:55
Honey is...
1:56
In this context.
1:57
Like if I have a brother who is in sin, and I'm a spiritual person, and I can see that
2:03
his fruit is led to sin in his life, and he has no fruit there, how is he going to take
2:09
that from me?
2:10
If I go in there and be like, "Dude, you're a horrible Christian.
2:12
You're not doing this right.
2:14
Your wife is dealing with this, or we're dealing with that."
2:17
How is he going to take that?
2:18
If I come just bombard him, what if I come and say, "Hey man, I'm a little worried about
2:21
you."
2:23
I've been dealing with this in my life that I dealt with in the past, and I just kind
2:26
of see that coming on with you, and I'm trying to make it more personable on how can I bring
2:32
this guy back to where he needs to be.
2:35
Some guys respond really well to the first one, to the "Coming in Guns, Blaze and Type
2:39
Thing" and other people like kind of the more measured approach.
2:42
Maybe that's just me.
2:44
Maybe it's less about, if I'm going to rebuke you, it's not about me.
2:50
I'm not trying to get satisfaction out of taking you down for the glory of Christ.
2:57
This is more about me revealing to you that you're not in line with the expectations of
3:04
God's word, and then helping steer you back in the right direction.
3:09
Does that make sense?
3:10
Yes, and I think that does make sense because we're all still human.
3:14
We're all going to sin.
3:15
So if I come with a high mighty attitude and a self-righteous attitude, that's about me
3:19
wanting to call you out.
3:21
One that's not doing what God wants me to do, and two, that sets me up for failure.
3:27
Yeah, and there are many times that I've had conversations with my kids about, and I just
3:32
connect with them, they're falling, they're not doing something correct.
3:39
And I can tell them, "Hey, you're not doing this right this way," but I can also connect
3:43
with them being like, "I remember when I was your age, and I felt the same way or I did
3:48
the same thing."
3:49
So then I can identify with them.
3:54
We've identified also that they're out of bounds, and then we can start the restoration
3:57
process in a sense.
3:59
So I wonder if as well has to do with five love languages type stuff.
4:04
So let's say your love language is quality time, and your wife's love language is acts
4:08
of service.
4:09
And so you are showing her love via quality time, so you're always hanging around, you're
4:13
always asking to hang out, and all she wants is for you to do stuff for her.
4:16
And so it's like, okay, you're not feeling her love tank, you're not feeling anyone's
4:19
love tank, you're trying to love her in the way that you accept love.
4:23
So I guess when you're approaching somebody, if you're rebuking somebody, it's like, rebuke
4:26
them not in your chosen favorite style, but in the style that you think they're going
4:30
to hear.
4:31
And like of all the available styles, like maybe they love the guns blazing thing, and
4:35
they, you know, they respond well to guys getting in their face, or maybe that's going
4:38
to absolutely make them melt, and they'll never trust you ever again to a certain degree.
4:42
But again, just getting back again as I talked about on last week's episode, when you're
4:45
talking about gentleness, that is something that I significantly struggle with because
4:49
it's just not a natural thing, a natural thing in my wiring.
4:52
And so I literally wrote like, how do you do that gently?
4:56
Because there are people that would maybe perceive when I talk to one of my guy friends
5:00
and I'm like pointing out something horrible in his life, they're going to be like, Oh,
5:02
my gosh, that was really not gentle.
5:04
That was kind of mean.
5:05
And it's like, yet to you it is, but we got, we got to the end goal.
5:10
And it wasn't in the thing that you would prefer as being a third person viewer of this
5:13
entire situation, but that's what the situation required.
5:16
And thank goodness I was put in that situation, Allah, I, William Ferrell, to be able to push
5:21
back in that particular way, because you can't always push back darkness by being, you know,
5:26
a choir boy, like, but that's also not, you know, an excuse to go off half cock all the
5:30
time.
5:31
But Derek, you want to hop in on.
5:32
Okay.
5:33
Yeah.
5:34
Two two points.
5:35
One, I quickly looked up gentleness in the Greek to see if I could get a better, it just
5:37
says being gentle and mild.
5:38
So that doesn't help us at all.
5:40
So thanks, Paul.
5:42
But here's a question, could it perhaps relate to the end of last week in Galatians five,
5:48
where Galatians five 25 says, if we live by the spirit, let us also keep in step with
5:52
the spirit.
5:53
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another, and then Paul
5:59
in the next line, because he, I mean, his letters, right, correct me if I'm wrong here,
6:03
but his letters were not letter five.
6:05
And then I'll send out letter six, right?
6:08
The chapters and verses were added later to us understand it.
6:11
So if he's talking about don't provoke one another, don't envy one another.
6:15
But if somebody's caught in transgression, approach them with gentleness.
6:19
So Kyle, to your point, it could be specifically who Paul was talking to in that specific situation
6:25
saying, don't provoke one another, talk to each other in gentleness as it relates to
6:31
the rest of Galatians where he's saying, guys, this is not Jesus plus something else.
6:36
This is Jesus and Jesus alone.
6:38
So if you're, if you're fighting or if anybody heard last week, if you're quabbling about
6:43
this kind of stuff, right, then don't quibble, don't provoke, but can we maybe like have
6:49
a moratorium on the word quabble?
6:51
Yes, I miss spoke.
6:52
Or is that just going to be a thing?
6:53
Now, I guess we can take a vote right now and I don't get a vote.
6:56
So it's, so it's not even.
6:57
Are we just going to keep saying quabble?
6:58
We'll probably say quabble.
6:59
Okay.
7:00
The problem is going to be is somebody's going to start listening to this like months from
7:03
now when we're talking about somebody else, something else and y'all are going to say
7:06
that I'll be like, these guys are idiots.
7:08
They're talking about quabbling like he's one.
7:10
They'd say that long before we get to quabble.
7:11
One thing I wanted to point out though too is I think he's trying to bring you to humbleness
7:15
because like look at, look at verse four, but each one must examine his own work and then
7:20
he will have a reason, then he will have reason for boasting, but to himself alone and not
7:25
to another for each one will bear his own load.
7:29
So how I need to humble myself or I'm going to come to a different, if I'm going to come
7:33
to a brother and I'm going to call him out.
7:36
Well, yeah.
7:37
And if we go back to chapter five, you know, the fruit of the spirit, when I read that,
7:41
I read that Jesus slash God always deals with his creation as humans through the fruit of
7:51
the spirit.
7:52
That's all that he always comes at him with joy, with peace, patience.
7:55
Now, to your point earlier, it may be that at times he has to come at us a little less
8:01
gentle, but it doesn't mean that it's not powerful.
8:04
And I feel like God's word oftentimes is, you know, we hear that God's word will not return
8:09
back to him then.
8:10
So when we are coming at a brother and saying, Hey, I'm noticing this in your life.
8:14
And this is, this is where I see you kind of out of bounds.
8:17
Here's what God's word says about this.
8:20
Then then we just let God's word kind of work into that a little bit.
8:25
In our house, I work really hard on when when rules are broken.
8:31
This is not an, it can be an emotional thing, but it also, if we have a rule broken and
8:37
then this is a punishment and we just, you broke the rule and so here's the punishment.
8:42
You know, we don't need to yell and scream and yell, you know, fight over it.
8:45
It's just, this is what it is.
8:46
Well, and I'll add to that, Eric, cause that's a good point.
8:49
Mark Driscoll, long time ago, I know Kyle, but a long time ago, he had a parenting set
8:54
a series and in it, he said, Hey, part of the issues with parents is parents treat mistakes
9:00
as sin, right?
9:01
When they break a rule, they didn't necessarily sin.
9:03
It was just a mistake or if they made a mistake, here's the consequence and you move on.
9:07
Kyle, that could be the point here is he's talking about, if anybody is caught in transgression,
9:11
so he's talking about sin and so we can't treat sin as a mistake.
9:15
Sin is not a mistake.
9:16
It's definitely sin and a grievance against the Lord.
9:18
And so we have to approach it in the right way.
9:21
I think approaching in the right way makes sense and just, just to be clear for anyone,
9:23
our audience, I didn't get the little inside joke there.
9:25
Like I, I am a Driscoll guy, but like you're not allowed to be a Driscoll guy because he
9:30
has unrependent sin and he was mean and he gave a lot of people the sads and all that.
9:33
So, you know, I, I get so much value out of a guy like my Mark Driscoll and I really enjoy
9:38
a lot of stuff that he says.
9:40
And so, and it's kind of one of those things where it's like, I think he even taught this
9:42
where it's like there's certain things in culture and whatever, like that you accept,
9:45
reject or redeem.
9:47
And so there are things that if you're listening to a guy like Mark Driscoll that you can accept
9:50
or reject or redeem and it's like just, just operate accordingly.
9:53
But I think it's, it's, it's important when you're talking about gentleness here, specifically
9:58
with verse one in chapter six of you're looking for restoration.
10:03
So you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness restoration is the
10:09
point.
10:10
Okay.
10:11
So yes, they didn't mistake against you as God.
10:13
They sinned against you as God.
10:15
That is a very, there's, they're not a mistake or they're a sinner, you know, in a lot of
10:18
modern churches, you're taught that you're a mistake or, oh, you just made a mistake.
10:22
It's like, no, you, you sinned against a holy God and a just righteous punishment for that
10:27
is eternal damnation.
10:28
That's a better way of thinking about it and describing it.
10:31
But then it goes back, you know, Eric, you were reading a verse four down there, but
10:34
also verse two, bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.
10:39
And then verse three is four, if anybody thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives
10:43
himself.
10:44
And that was a wrap it up with four and five, but let each one test his own work and then
10:48
his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor for each will have
10:52
to bear his own load.
10:53
What this gets into guys, again, you know, on Daunton life, we are targeted at men and
10:57
Daunton life of a man's podcast is 90% male audience.
11:00
The women that listen are absolute lionesses, they're gangsters.
11:03
But this is a big deal for men.
11:05
We love to loan wolf it.
11:07
Okay.
11:08
And so when somebody rebukes us, kind of like what you were talking about earlier, Ryan,
11:13
it's, you know, we can very easily brush that person off because if brushing them off loses
11:20
our community that we were in, no big deal, I'm a lone wolf.
11:23
I can, I can do my own thing.
11:24
I can pull myself up by my bootstraps.
11:26
I'm a, I'm a good Western American guy, like that, that type of a thing.
11:31
But the issue that a lot of us have is we're not allowing somebody to come under the bar
11:36
and lift some of the weight off of our shoulders for us because we feel like we have something
11:40
to prove.
11:41
So it was just, as I'm talking about this, I'm thinking through, isn't that kind of the
11:44
point of Galatians where you have the Judaizers saying, yep, you know, you could just let
11:48
Christ, you know, carry all the weight of this.
11:51
But we're going to let Christ carry most of it, but we're going to add some things here
11:54
and there.
11:55
We're going to add some boxes that need to be checked or something like that.
11:57
But how that, you know, really coalesces into a normal everyday life for a lot of men
12:01
in our life is we don't, we don't want to bear one another's burns.
12:06
We don't want anyone to bear a burden with us.
12:07
Why?
12:08
Because it's my burden.
12:09
Because people in my community do these things because I don't really want to bother them
12:11
and I don't really want to, you know, mess with them and, you know, I'm really struggling
12:14
right now and I feel like I'm drowning, but, you know, I'm a man and I'm supposed to,
12:17
you know, take care of it.
12:18
And as a man, I'm, I've somehow gotten this idea that I'm supposed to have all the answers
12:22
and I'm supposed to be checking every single one of the boxes when in reality, you just
12:26
can't like, you know, there are these things I've heard before to where it's like somebody's
12:30
going to lose out.
12:32
You can't run a successful business and have a deeply intimate marriage and have wonderful
12:37
relationships with your kids and be involved in the community and be in tremendous, you
12:41
know, Ironman triathlon shape.
12:43
It's not possible.
12:44
Someone's always going to be getting the short into the stick.
12:47
The thing is, is you get to choose who's going to get the shortest in, right?
12:50
That's what you get to choose because it's very easy to keep going back to the golf course
12:54
because that's something that you can easily control and not keep seeking after the heart
12:58
of your wife.
12:59
So I know I'm, I'm opening up a lot of doors there, but again, it's the burns overall.
13:02
You've actually rebuked me on that before.
13:05
One time, our whole family was sick.
13:07
I think all the kids were sick, wife was sick, but it was our turn to bring a breakfast to
13:12
an adult Bible fellowship and I left them at home, went and grabbed breakfast and brought
13:17
it over and like, Hey guys, can't stay everybody sick and Kyle's like, why didn't you reach
13:22
out to one of us to bring breakfast?
13:25
We could have done that.
13:26
And I was like, no, no, it's my burden.
13:28
I got to do it.
13:29
And he's like, no, this is what we are.
13:30
We're your community, you know, reach out to us.
13:33
You're burdens on us, you know, and it goes back to the lone wolf, you know, and what's
13:39
funny about that had the situation been switched, I would have done the exact same thing you
13:42
had done.
13:43
And I would have brushed in.
13:44
I would have brushed you off and be like, Hey man, it was my burden and I'm a guy that
13:47
checks my own boxes and all that, but you, but you're exactly right.
13:49
Like it was, it was a time where a community could have been leaned on and, you know, it's
13:53
like, no, no, I'm going to lean on me.
13:54
Yep.
13:55
Go ahead.
13:56
Okay.
13:57
So let me, if I can jump in here, I heard a pastor talk about once Kyle to your point
14:00
of as specifically as men, we work towards the point of autonomy, right?
14:06
Autonomy is the goal in Western civilization so that we don't need anybody.
14:11
We don't rely on anybody.
14:12
And therefore nobody can speak into our lives and tell us and rebuke us when we do something
14:17
wrong because that's, that's what happens when you have the lack of community.
14:21
Oftentimes second point, oftentimes what does happen is if there is no relationship, there's
14:27
no relationship equity between the two people.
14:30
And if you're not approached right, what I've found or what I've seen is three things happen,
14:34
right?
14:35
One is resignation.
14:36
Oh man, I'm just never going to, okay, I'll, I'll never be good enough in that area.
14:39
I give up two resentment.
14:41
So the bitterness sneaks into the heart.
14:42
You have resentment towards the other person or three resistance and you resist that relationship
14:47
unlike Ryan, you're talking about, Hey, you rebuked me.
14:50
I heard that that stuck with me for years.
14:52
And now I'm going to grow in that and actually lean on my community.
14:55
So here's a question, Kyle, back to your point.
14:58
How do we, how do I reconcile verse two where it says bear one and others burdens and verse
15:04
five where it says each will have to bear his own load?
15:07
Yeah.
15:08
And I'll, I'll speak to that just having thought about that a little bit.
15:11
I mean, there are, there are what like, I need to move from one house to another.
15:16
So I need people to help me literally physically move things.
15:19
I think there are, that's a burden, right?
15:21
You don't need to do that alone.
15:22
Call your guys and have them come help you, but on the, on the flip side, there are burdens
15:27
that you alone must bear.
15:29
If you get sick, not that you won't have help, but that sickness inside of you is yours and
15:34
you are bearing that sickness, a woman that has, that's pregnant.
15:39
Nobody can carry her baby for her.
15:41
That is a burden that she must carry.
15:44
And that's really where that, that root of that word is, is centered just kind of around
15:48
this kind of idea of pregnancy.
15:49
Well, and there, there are burdens that only you can carry, which is what you just described
15:54
to where it's like, you know, for anybody that's had a pregnant wife, like, if you're
15:58
a super empathetic type of guy, I bet you've wished that you could have taken the burden
16:03
from her at different points when her backs extra sore, when she's super uncomfortable,
16:07
you know, her body's changing and shifting in so many different interesting ways, especially
16:10
with the first pregnancy.
16:11
And you want to be able to take that burden, but you simply cannot.
16:14
And you know, there was a commentary I was reading where I was talking specifically about
16:18
the load, the word load used in the Greek doesn't have a connotation of difficulty.
16:23
So it's not describing the difficulty of a task is describing whose load specifically
16:27
it is.
16:28
And so that's why I think it's important to where it's like, okay, if someone says, hey,
16:33
I'm really struggling, making ends meet and, you know, paying for all the obligations in
16:36
my home.
16:37
And also they're very overextended because they're trying to catch, you know, keep up
16:41
with the Joneses and things like that.
16:43
That is not your burden to pay their bills.
16:46
Now you can assist there are times in our life where, you know, Kelsey and I have done, done
16:51
really well and we knew people that were doing poorly and we paid some mortgage payments.
16:54
Like we were able to help people in those areas.
16:57
That was not all of our burden, but we were able to hop in when the burden was, was becoming
17:02
crushing, right?
17:03
But there are certain things like, I can't make someone else healthy, right?
17:06
Like, you know, I'm, I'm a pusher when it comes to exercise and working out and things
17:09
like that, but I can't make you want to be in shape.
17:11
I can't make you eat, right?
17:12
I can't, you make, make you go to sleep and make good decisions with your overall health.
17:17
That is not my burden to carry.
17:18
However, when somebody reaches out to you and says, Hey, I'm struggling in this area.
17:23
I need you to take some of this burden and you are specifically equipped to do that.
17:27
For the most part, the answer just has to be yes.
17:29
Now there, there are obviously certain situations and stuff like that.
17:31
And I think I've talked about on my show where I had a buddy who reached out to me two or
17:34
three times over like a decade to try to, you know, get him in shape and, you know, get
17:38
his all this stuff figured out.
17:39
And he never did it. And so the, the latest time that he asked me, I said, Hey man, go
17:43
work out and diet for six months and then come back to me and I'll help you. And so there
17:48
are certain times when you need to push people in a different way. But I think that's an
17:51
important thing for men out there overall just to think, okay, you do have burdens that
17:55
other people can take. And there's a line there where you're taking advantage of people.
18:00
But I feel like as men, we don't ask enough for, for people to kind of hop in and help
18:04
us out.
18:05
Yeah.
18:06
It's good. Yeah. So as we dig it even deeper into, into Galatian six, um, so getting into
18:14
verse seven, I got to be honest, there's some confusion here. And I think this is part of
18:17
the thing about a forging table. And for those of you listening to this, I know a lot of
18:20
you guys have already created your own forging table. And if you come to the forging table,
18:24
knowing all the answers, that is not the point, guys. So just think through that a lot because,
18:29
you know, again, I started out with verse one, gentle how, like what do you mean by gentle
18:32
when we were talking about last week, you know, are the fruits of the spirit in order
18:35
of importance? Like, you know, you know, there are questions that you need to ask.
18:38
So do not be deceived. God is not mocked for whatever one sows that will he also reap.
18:44
And so I guess for me, even after reading commentaries, I didn't really get the God is
18:49
not mocked part. And I didn't get how that attached to for whatever one sows that will
18:54
he also reap because then in verse eight, you get for the one who sows to his own flesh
18:58
will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the spirit will from the spirit
19:03
reap eternal life and let us not grow weary of doing good. And so I want to kind of say
19:07
verse nine, let us not grow weary of doing good. But the God is not mocked part. Like,
19:11
I guess I didn't get the connection to sowing and reaping somebody help, please. And thank
19:18
you.
19:19
I mean, I wonder if this goes back to Galatians five, verse 24. Now those who belong to Christ
19:26
Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. And so if we go, I mean, I don't
19:30
know if that goes where God's being mocked, but for whatever person sows, this he will
19:35
also reap. If I'm going to sow the fruits of the spirit and I'm going to sow, I'm going
19:40
to reap the fruits. But if I want to sow at my flesh once, I'm going to reap what my
19:44
flesh wants. And y'all can go back and tell you, you know, what kind of fruit my flesh
19:51
wants. You know, it's, you know, if we put that up against God's log in, my flesh is
19:56
going to lose out, you know. And so that's what I would think.
19:59
God not being mocked. That's that's pretty heavy, you know. And so I would like, is it
20:05
mocking if you're sowing not from the spirit? If you're sowing from the flesh, is that what
20:09
is mocking to God? Well, what if it's like, I'm a believer and I'm sowing to my flesh
20:15
rather than sowing to the fruit, like I'm mocking God, basically, you know, because I'm
20:20
saying, Hey, I rather I rather I rather die to my flesh than die to you. And so, you know,
20:27
I'm going to go and walk this life and pretend to be a believer. I would, I would find that
20:32
to be mocking.
20:33
I mean, you're going to get what you put into something. Yeah, you know, but it's also
20:37
what you put into it, though, too. You know, sure, sure. I was thinking, uh, um, remember
20:42
when Jacob deceived Isaac, you know, you know, yeah, so I was like, I mean, so, right, feel
20:48
my hairy arms. You know, um, what happened later was, uh, when he was working for Nate
20:53
or for Laban, he worked all those years. He was deceived, right? Yes. He got Leah instead
21:00
of Rachel. Yeah. It's a lazy eye. Yeah. It's exactly right. Basically stole his brother's
21:05
birth right with some lentils. So he got it. He kind of got it back. I guess in our modern
21:09
day, we call that karma. Well, in some respects, you also look at it. His mom was involved in
21:15
regards to him deceiving his father. And then that comes back to Eve being deceived by the
21:21
boyfriend. Yeah. To a point. Yeah. So Kyle, your question here of God is not mocked for
21:27
whatever one sows that he will also reap. Um, I have kind of a, I'm trying to figure out
21:34
a way to put this picture in my mind into words. And it's kind of like the guy or the person
21:39
who perhaps does, um, do whatever they want. And it seems like they're getting everything
21:45
they want and they're living a life like you were saying, Ryan, far away from God that
21:49
they were living in impurity and all the stuff and in Galatians five that says comes from
21:55
living of the flesh, but it feels like they're getting everything they want. And oftentimes
21:59
as believers, we look at that and we say, Oh, man, that is so not fair. That's all over
22:04
Psalms. Yeah. Right. Exactly. Exactly. And I feel like that's where no, no, no, no, he
22:09
might not be reaping at the end because when you think about reap and you think about so,
22:15
there's a lot of season in between those two, right? When you plant it and then you nurture
22:19
it and you grow it and you develop it and then in the harvest time is when you actually
22:23
reap. And so oftentimes I think when I look at somebody living that way, they're living
22:27
away from God or apart from God, they're living by the flesh. I see what's happening right
22:32
now and it looks like a big, healthy, nurturing plant or something that's going to be harvest
22:39
and be wonderful. And I actually get into this or jealous and say, man, that's, you know,
22:43
that that's challenging. Why? Why are they getting everything they want and they're walking
22:47
away from God? But it's not harvest time yet. And so I think at the end of that, they will
22:52
harvest what they sowed in impurity and walking in the flesh.
22:56
That goes back to the first one, right? Yeah.
22:59
Verse one, you know, it says, keep watch of yourself less you to be tempted. You know,
23:04
so when you're when you're seeing, gosh, he seems like he's having a lot of success with
23:08
this carnal living, you know, maybe I should try it out. You know, it's right. You know,
23:13
the time is coming. Well, then in verse, in verse nine, we're talking about seasons.
23:17
So and let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season, we will reap if we do not
23:22
give up. So, so that's, you know, a lesson in perseverance. That's a lesson in resilience,
23:26
making sure that you can do that. But the do not grow weary of doing good. There are
23:32
so many contexts which which with which that is applicable because maybe there's someone
23:36
in your life that you're constantly doing for and you're not getting anything in return.
23:42
And either you the whole time or you suddenly become aware of the inequity in that relationship.
23:46
And then you get to decide what you do with that inequity. You keep making deposits and
23:50
making the inequity wider. Do you cut it off there? Cut your losses? Do you bind to the
23:55
sunk cost fallacy of like, yeah, I've already given all this to this relationship, but you
23:58
know, I'm pot committed at this point, you know, to this relationship. So I might as well
24:01
stay here, even though this person's now starting to wear me down and bring me down to kind of
24:06
the things that they're doing. And you know, I'd love to get y'all's perspective on that
24:10
as well, because when I read when I read that, it's like, yeah, that's great. You know,
24:13
that would look good on a bumper sticker and like, you know, if we if we don't give up,
24:16
so it's like, Hey, this is our reason to not give up. But man, like there are times where
24:20
you feel like you're just putting in the reps and putting in the reps and putting in the
24:24
reps and you're not getting anywhere. All of us have experience with entrepreneurial
24:29
ventures or small businesses or things that we're doing that are dependent on us. And
24:35
you keep doing what you consider to be the right thing, the right thing, the right thing
24:38
and then it doesn't go well. So Eric, you obviously work with a lot of people that get
24:41
injured. And so it's like, imagine you're an athlete for your entire life. And you always
24:46
stretch after you work out and you always like do the right exercises and every you never
24:50
put yourself, you know, too far and you always make sure you focus on recovery and all that
24:53
and then pop something explodes, you know, bicep tendon explodes, you know, you destroy
24:57
your knee, your ankles broken or something like that. And then now you're dealing with
25:00
this person that has put so many good deposits in the right bank account. Didn't change the
25:05
outcome though. And so but that that's not the potential for something to befall you that
25:11
is bad and negative is not an excuse to never put in the reps to begin with. Because I've
25:15
talked to people before, they're like, yeah, I mean, I would work out, but I'm really concerned
25:18
about getting injured. It's like, okay, so you're you're putting a lot of concern into
25:22
something that hasn't and may never happen to you. And so you're going to make this
25:26
deleterious decision for your overall health for the entirety of your life and delete years
25:31
off the end of your life, because you're afraid of something that may never materialize.
25:35
And again, I'm kind of getting outside of the lens of scripture as we talk about this.
25:39
But I guess that's just almost like my my call to men to like, even if it doesn't seem
25:44
like it's provide providing fruit right now, go ahead and keep doing it. You know, even
25:48
if it doesn't seem like sharing the gospel with that person made an impact, you have
25:51
no idea what's going to happen. That person could accept Christ down the road and it was
25:55
a seed that you planted, and they're not going to try to seek you out and find you and tell
25:59
you, hey, you know, it all started back when you asked to pray for me at that restaurant
26:02
whenever I was a server 20 years ago. But like, that's part of the thing is like, even
26:06
if you don't know the score, you should still do good.
26:09
Yeah, I, you know, I think about it as contractual relationships and covenantal relationships.
26:17
And you know, if I, if I shop at Aldi or their meat, and because they have a great price,
26:25
then I'm, I'm basically I have kind of a loose contract that I'm going to go shop there because
26:29
I can get a good deal. But then if I find out that Costco has the same meat, that's maybe
26:36
even better quality and it's cheaper, I'm going to, I'm going to tear up that contract
26:40
with Aldi and I'm going to go shop at Costco because I can get it better quality and cheaper.
26:45
So I think we do have those types of relationships out there. But we also have covenant relationships,
26:53
you know, marriage being one of them where it reflects Jesus and God's relationship with us,
27:00
which is reflected back when Abraham and God met and they have had that covenant moment together.
27:08
And God said, basically, I will be whoever I'm supposed to be regardless of who you are.
27:15
That's covenant based relationship as opposed to I'm going to be
27:21
whoever and who I'm saying I'm going to be as long as you do your part. And if you don't,
27:26
then I'm out, you know. So I don't think we do a very good job operating in the covenant side of
27:32
things, especially with our closest relationships. And so we see marriage and divorce and all that.
27:38
But like, if we become weary, like what happens, like what happened with Abraham,
27:43
we bring up Abraham, I think that's a perfect thing to bring up is Sarah became weary
27:49
about having a baby. And what happened? Well, she let her desire to be patient.
27:54
She got impatient. And she had Hagar conceive a child with Abraham and look at all look what
28:02
we're reaping from that. You know what I'm saying? And so it's like, if we if we put our trust in
28:07
God, put our trust in and what Christ has done for us and we do not become weary and we're patient,
28:14
you know, we will reap. So yeah, I mean, and in relationship, if you just take like a
28:19
marriage relationship, it's there are times where it does seem the equity seems off. You know,
28:28
we're certain expectations are not being being met. But I have to remind myself that I don't,
28:33
I don't put my identity in my wife, I put my identity in Christ. And yes, I would love for her
28:40
to respond to me 100% of the time as Christ would through this fruit of the spirit. That's just
28:45
unreasonable. So I have to continue to go back and be like, you know what Christ always deals with me
28:52
through the fruit of the spirit. And that is who I'm identified with. So when you bring that up,
28:56
it's like my wife and I have talked to, you know, equity, it's like when it comes to the kids or
29:01
it's coming to something in the house, it's like, it's not 50 50, you know, with Christ and God,
29:07
he gives me is 100%. And that's what he wants back from me is my 100%. You know, and when it comes
29:12
to my wife and it comes, you know, I want her 100%, she wants my 100%, you know, God's not asking me
29:17
for 50%. He's asking for all of me. That's what he wants, you know. And so I think that's, that's
29:23
what we've got to look at as well, you know, it's like, are we 100% on fire? Are we 100% believing?
29:28
And, you know, and I think we could reap, I think we're going to reap benefits. We're not going to
29:34
reap worldly benefits like money, cars or, you know, prosperity or healing, but we may reap,
29:42
you know, relationships, you know, like, man, my relationship with my wife is a lot closer because
29:47
I died to self on in regards to this, you know, my relationship with my friends are a lot better
29:53
because, you know, I died to self on this. So it's just one thing that, you know, I kind of look at
29:59
so in doing good, you know, not only just, you know, to others, you know, I mean, but that's
30:04
basically what we're going to call out into verse 10, you know, well, even in the concept of good,
30:09
because all of this begs the question, what do you mean by good? Because if we're defining
30:13
our terms, you have to obviously, you know, what do you mean by love? Because we talked about that,
30:17
I think last time we were talking about, okay, some people think love is very, very different.
30:20
But in this, like doing good, where do we get our concept of good? So this goes back to another
30:25
guy we're not supposed to mention. So Rob is acrized, but he taught me this and all for all,
30:28
always remember it, your, your worldview has to answer four questions, origin, meaning morality,
30:33
destiny. So origin, where do we come from? Meaning, why are we here morality? How can we tell the
30:38
difference between good and evil destiny? Where do we go when we die? In the morality section,
30:42
again, if you say, you know, why do bad things happen to good people, you're, you're obviously
30:46
saying that there is bad in the world. How do we know things are bad? Well, we have things that are
30:50
good that we can compare it to. And how do we differentiate between the two? Well, there's a
30:54
moral law that gives us the answers to that. And having a moral law begs that there is a moral
30:58
law giver because every question about good and evil is either, like I think I described it like
31:04
it's about a person or it's for a person or something like that. So there, there has to be a moral
31:08
law giver. But guys, that's why, as I've admitted before, there have been entire sections of my
31:13
Christian life where I did not dig into the book that gives me the scaffolding for good and evil.
31:18
How do we know things are moral? This, like these Bibles help us do that. And so if you take
31:25
Galatians 6, 9, seriously, and you're like, I'm not going to grow weary of doing good. I'm going to
31:29
ask you doing what? Doing what? Good. Well, what does that mean? Okay. Because like, maybe you're
31:36
you're a jocko guy and you're, you know, good, no matter what the situation is, no matter what
31:39
the circumstances are, when or lose good, you know, I either learned you either when are you
31:42
learning. That's great. What do you mean though? And so the way that we get the meaning is through
31:48
this? Yeah, I mean, by good, I mean, is it good for me? Like someone needs some money. I give them
31:53
money. You know, a friend comes to me, he's like, I need help making my car payment. I give them
31:58
money. That's good. But let's just say he's not doing the things to make his car payment. You know,
32:02
what I'm saying? Like, it might be even better and good to not give him the money. You know what
32:07
I'm saying? And I think that's, that's the thing we have to look at. I'm good. Good isn't always the
32:11
great outcome and the nice outcome. Good is going to be the tough love outcome. Absolutely. And I
32:17
think that that that opens up a lot of doors for guys that people that are well read or maybe more
32:22
intellectual, they like to really get into the ethereal about things like good. And it's like,
32:26
how about we start with the good book? And then sure, sure, like I've got a book list on my website,
32:31
the 100 books every modern Christian man should read list, not all those come from a Christian
32:34
worldview. And there is plenty of wisdom that comes through those things. And one of my top 10
32:37
books of all time is the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. That's a book that basically teaches you
32:41
how to manipulate people. There is a tremendous amount of historical wisdom that comes from that
32:46
book. But I have a filter. The filter is the scriptures tour. You know, it's what I was talking
32:50
about earlier with accept, reject, redeem. There are things that I can just flat out,
32:54
except from that book, there are things that I have to flat out reject. And there are things
32:57
that I can redeem for the kingdom, right? And it's not like, you know, when people talk about
33:00
CRT and it's like, Oh, we're just going to use this as a lens through which we can, you know,
33:04
identify problems in the church that we can, you know, provide solutions for it's not that. It's like,
33:08
we can, we can get good from a better understanding of the good book and the good scriptures. And so,
33:14
as we wind down here on Galatians 6 and really the entirety of Galatians, the last section is kind
33:18
of the final warning had been addiction. So the entirety of this letter has been warning, warning,
33:23
warning, blinking siren. You got to be careful. You got to watch out. But then he tries to like
33:27
slam at home here at the end. And I want to want to end on verse 14 because I feel like that sums
33:31
up Galatians. I want to skip all the way to verse 17 though. From now on, let no one caused me trouble
33:36
for I bear my body, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. So this is almost Paul being like,
33:43
I'm not talking about this anymore. Okay. Like, and if you want, if you want to see my bonafides,
33:49
if you want to see, you know, my resume, if you want to see my Vita, they're all over my body,
33:54
because at this point in his ministry, and I've got the year somewhere else, but at this point
33:58
in Paul's ministry, he had been beaten up. He had been shipwrecked. He had been snake bit,
34:04
like he had been wiped. Yeah, like he, he literally had the messaging of the truth of the gospel and
34:12
the things that, that he had the fault that things that had befallen him all over his body. And so
34:17
you have all these squeaky clean people, pharasetical people or these Judaizers, that they didn't bear
34:23
the scars of the truth of the gospel. They didn't bear the scars of spreading that message along.
34:27
These are just people that lived in ancient Galatia. And you know, that's just their city. And they're
34:31
just trying to do the right thing. And oh, I guess, you know, these Judaizers say this is the right
34:35
thing. And Peter's with them. So, you know, Peter's kind of a cool guy, like he, when he hung out with
34:38
Jesus, and, but like, that's a very, very important thing to me because Paul doesn't seem to flex
34:44
a whole lot in his stories. He is constantly describing himself as the foremost of sinners,
34:49
like, hey, I used to persecute the church. I used to hate God and I used to kill Christians, right?
34:54
But this is a time where it's like, okay, I'm going to flex just a little bit. Look at my body,
34:59
you know what I mean? Well, he referenced that in chapter five as well, Kyle, you know, he said,
35:04
hey, if I am, if I am wrong on this, why am I still persecuted, right? And I think that that's
35:09
his whole point here is, look, I'm done. I'm not, I'm not going to repeat myself. You can reread
35:14
the letter over and over if you want to. I've told my, I've told my point, but I've been persecuted
35:18
enough. Now it's time. I think it's in what verse chapter four or five where he basically says,
35:26
what are you thinking? Are you kidding me? You guys are still considering this? Maybe it's the
35:32
beginning of three, right? I heard somebody actually translate that to you idiots. How can you be
35:38
this big of idiots with this whole thing? And so I think here, he's, he's closing his entire letter
35:45
to say, listen, from now on, I'm done. You guys do what you need to do. Do what you need to do.
35:51
Yeah, it's like, I've given you the, that's the beginning of, of three overlist relations.
35:56
That's exactly who has bewitched you. It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly
36:01
portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this. Did you receive the spirit by works or by law or
36:06
by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? And yeah, I mean, we get to that point where, yeah,
36:13
we just go ahead and sink there. And again, for us, we're looking at this as chunks of a letter,
36:17
right? But it was a letter. It was an intact entire letter. Like, just think about it,
36:22
what letters from Birmingham jail, like imagine reading that in sections versus reading that
36:26
in a totality, you get a whole lot of different meaning because the first people in Galatia that
36:31
read this letter, they weren't reading verse one, and then going back to the commentaries,
36:35
and then spending time hearing somebody else read it, they read the letter, you know what I mean?
36:39
And like, so you look at the entirety, the thematic, you know, the undergird of this entire letter,
36:46
it's there the entire time. Well, I think he also flexes here because, I mean, if you go back to
36:52
chapter one, he's basically defending himself on who he is as an apostle, right? You know,
36:57
and so he's like, not only did I, you know, not only did I do all this stuff, and then I was blinded,
37:03
and then I went into the desert for however long, three years, and, you know, was basically fed the
37:09
scripture by the Holy Spirit, I also bear the marks, you know, I was blinded by Christ. Like,
37:15
that's one mark. I mean, like, yeah, Christ actually blinded him, you know,
37:20
who knows if he's not dealing with the eyesight issues, because he's in Galatia, he was
37:23
injured or something, he was dealing with something. You know, it's funny about that. He didn't even
37:27
think about it. And so you just said it. Verse 11, see with what large letters I am writing to you
37:31
with my own hand, there are a lot of people that think Paul had eye issues. And so in order to see
37:36
what he was writing, he had to write in bigger letters than what was normal for the scribes at
37:39
the time. So perhaps he could have done that, or it could have been like, I really want you to,
37:43
like see this, see these large letters. I want you to get this, you know, because like, what did he
37:48
write in large letters? It was basically about, you know, the circumcision party. So, um,
37:53
brothers and sisters, oops, sorry, see with what large letters I've written to you with my own hand,
38:02
all who want to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised,
38:07
simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
38:11
And that kind of interesting to think about, like, those, um, all who want to make a good showing in
38:18
the flesh in the flesh, right? Yeah, like, hey, man, like, look at our church nowadays. You know,
38:24
what I'm saying with our modern times and the way our culture is moving, like they're wanting to
38:29
make a good showing in the flesh, you know, like, hey, we're, we're, we're okay with this. Like,
38:35
this is just who it is. You know, this is just who I am. You know, they're making a good showing in
38:39
the flesh and they're trying to compel you to come to church. You know what I'm saying? But
38:44
it's just like the Judaism trying to compel you to be circumcised. You know, it's the wrong
38:49
message. It's not grace alone. It's, you know, it's grace plus, you know, it's like, hey, have
38:55
grace, but also we're cold, totally cool with you. What did live in the flesh, you know, so he
39:00
basically enlarged letters, whether it's because he dealt with eyesight issues or he just wanted
39:04
to get it across basically wanting you to know that these people are pulling you in for fleshly
39:10
desires. Well, in the whole grace plus idea, every time you say that, I think like daily,
39:13
daily wire plus or CNN plus, but let's look at it in terms, as corny as this is going to be,
39:16
like CNN plus, it's like, look at all the money and effort they put into something that was going
39:20
to fail from the very beginning. It's like if people are going to watch those hosts for free,
39:24
why do you think they're going to pay you a monthly subscription fee to do that? It's kind of the
39:28
same thing. Like when you're doing grace plus, it's, you could you're too smart for your own good,
39:32
and you think, I know the formula that's going to work for me and it's going to work for the
39:36
marketplace. It's just not going to happen for your brother. And so it's like, why continue going
39:40
back to the same? Well, it's because we're morons. Well, you say formula. I mean, that's what they're
39:44
looking for. They're looking for a formula. Why? They want to make their churches bigger.
39:48
They want to bring in, bring everything in, you know, by a secret sensitive type of attitude,
39:53
but they're not using the real gospel. You know what I'm saying? Like they're using a false
39:58
gospel to bring these people in. And it's like, are you know, like I will not be mocked, God says,
40:03
you know, you know, are we mocking him by thinking that his true gospel of what he put in his word
40:10
about, you know, Christ dying on the cross to take on the wrath of our sins is not beautiful
40:16
enough to bring people in that I have to have these other things, like circumcision or, you know,
40:23
doing good or all this other stuff to bring people in. No, like this alone should bring
40:30
people to the table. And if you're not, if you're not, um, if you're not good with that or you don't
40:35
have faith in that, you know, I wonder, I wonder where, where that church is going or where that
40:41
church is going to look like in, in 10 years, is it going to be a church or is it going to be a club?
40:45
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, no, that's good. I was just thinking about that, that word bearing,
40:50
you know, our flip over here to Luke 14. So I would like to read a portion of that Luke 14 26
40:56
27 and 33 says, if anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and
41:02
children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple, whoever does
41:08
not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. And then I'm 33. So therefore,
41:14
anyone of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. I mean, there,
41:21
I was thinking back and I cannot remember the documentary I watched. It was a time, you know,
41:27
all back, but in parts of the world, there's high amounts of persecution and they find out
41:33
you're a Christian, they kill you. Um, there's a whole lot of underground, um, gospel spreading,
41:39
you know, but a lot of these people that are coming into these groups and they call them
41:43
whatever they call them, but they're basically like Bible studies, they're unbelievers.
41:47
When they come in, they have somebody leading this group of unbelievers and teaching them the truth
41:52
in the gospel. And over time, some of those folks start to convert. Um, and it's interesting listening
42:00
to the documentary and what they're saying, they were like, when they make that decision,
42:05
it is not some pussyfoot kind of decision. It's not like, give it a shot, you know,
42:10
they are all in knowing that the cost of that could mean that they die. Um, so they are taking
42:18
up and bearing that cross from the very get go. And I think, you know, just in American and across
42:24
the world in many areas, we just don't, we do not approach it like you bring that up. And like,
42:30
that's a beautiful thing to look at about other countries, the world countries that were Christianity
42:34
is not the Christianity here of America. You know what I'm saying? Like they're being persecuted,
42:39
like there's a church here that will, you know, if you want to make the sacrifice of tithing,
42:44
they'll let you tithe for three months. And then if you don't feel the blessings from God,
42:48
they'll give you your money back. And you've got people across the, across the, the ocean who are
42:54
being persecuted just for believing and dying. And we're worried about, Hey, are we seeing any
42:58
blessings from the $20 I put into, uh, to the plate today? You know, it's like, man, it makes you
43:04
really think like, we have it pretty good here, but we haven't died to ourselves. Yeah, absolutely.
43:11
So, okay. And so many points here I want to touch on, because I think what we're weaving is this
43:16
beautiful story of from the very beginning God had called the Israelites to stand out against
43:21
culture, right? I mean, he gave them the law so that they would look different physically and
43:26
behaviorally look different than the rest of culture. And even now here, as you look at, we're
43:32
still on verse 12 here and they are make a good showing in the flesh in order that they may not
43:39
be persecuted for the cross of Christ. And so what he's pointing out here is, Hey, look,
43:43
they don't want to be persecuted. They don't, they don't want to pay the price for actually fully
43:47
committing to your point, Eric, about, Hey, whoever denies your mother and father, meaning,
43:53
Hey, your, your Jewish heritage, your traditions, you have to completely walk away from that life
43:58
and turn towards Jesus and Christ in order to be completely brand new. And I think Ryan,
44:03
to your point of, as we come into the modern day church, Jesus still calls us to be drastically
44:09
different than the, than the culture that we're around. And as we as Christians, when we begin to
44:15
participate in the cultural values that we're called to stand against, we lose all credibility,
44:22
all credibility, right? And the Bible can't progress. The Bible is, you can't make this any
44:28
better than what it already is. And if you try to make it any better than it already is,
44:32
you're feeding some other narrative that God doesn't want you. You're exactly right. I mean,
44:36
I heard a pastor, he's a teacher, but I'd call him a pastor talk about how that right there,
44:42
standing up against cultural values. And God's word is God's word, and it doesn't change. He
44:47
changed. He used Samson as an example of Samson, standing up against culture, and then not standing
44:54
up against culture when he went to go marry and intermingle with the Philistines and that kind of
44:59
stuff. And it absolutely applies to the Galatians here saying, hey, no, you've been called to be
45:06
different and different in the sense of not be circumcised, not be circumcised and fall
45:12
under the curse of the law. You've been called to be different. The only reason people are asking
45:17
you to not take that full stance, fully die to yourself is because they don't want to be persecuted.
45:23
And look at my, I mean, and then we go back to number, verse 17 here, but hey, cause me no trouble
45:28
because I bear the marks. I've been persecuted. I've fully committed and I'm calling you to fully
45:33
commit as well. Yeah, and that's, that's when yeah, first Corinthians 11 one, he said, follow me as
45:38
I also follow, like who in the world can say that? Well, Paul, Paul can say it. Okay, yeah.
45:43
I think about somebody like Yeon Meepark, who was a refugee from North Korea, her book
45:49
that she wrote, and she's got another book that's, that's out now as well. But hearing her story
45:54
about what she had to go through, what her family had to go through for her to now be in America.
45:58
And she went to an American university. I think she went to Columbia and the things that like,
46:02
there were trigger warnings in the class. Like, so first day of class, when they should be going
46:05
over the syllabus, they're talking about trigger warnings, they're talking about, Hey, if you're
46:08
really, really stressed out and it's test day or something like that, here's this form that you
46:11
can fill out that will get you out of the out of the test. And here's where the safe spaces are on
46:15
campus and all that. And she's looking around like, I see crickets in the field to try to get a little
46:21
bit of protein. And here you guys are complaining and she of all the people that go to Columbia,
46:27
that can claim to be a victim at during that time, Yeon Meepark was one because she weighed like 85
46:32
pounds because she was malnourished for basically the first two decades of her, of her entire life.
46:37
And yet people that are feeling as if, Oh, well, I have this immutable characteristic. So I'm
46:40
part of this victim group. And so I think that's really, really important for us to understand that
46:45
because some people think, Hey, that's kind of a cocky thing for him to be saying. It's like,
46:48
no, he's showing you of how much worse things can be, but for a purpose of the glory of Christ and
46:54
his name being being renowned and being spread throughout that entire part of the world. And so
46:58
as we wrap up here, we really need to go and put a bow on all of Galatians, not just Galatians 6.
47:03
And I feel like Paul kind of does that with verse 14, but far be it from me to both except in the
47:08
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.
47:14
Again, the entire point, what we see, the major theme of the entirety of Galatians of this entire
47:20
letter is guys, grace by faith alone. Your debt was paid. The propitiation for your sin was paid
47:28
on the cross of Christ. It was paid at Calvary. And that is it. You're adding to the gumbo
47:34
and the gumbo is already done. It's finished. It's been turned into the judges. And it's already
47:38
been been judged, you know, as sufficient, you don't need to make it any sweeter. You don't need to
47:43
make it any salty or any of those things. So I just want to kind of open it up to you guys,
47:47
just your overall thoughts, because we've spent a lot of time as a group going over Galatians
47:51
over these last few months. Just give me your overall thoughts on the letter.
47:54
I mean, Galatians is the gospel. It lays it out in that we are saved by grace alone, through Christ
48:04
alone. If your gospel is not Christ crucified and Christ resurrected, then you need to relook
48:12
your gospel, relook at it, because you're not preaching the right gospel. And so I think that's
48:17
where Paul's getting at. It's just like, this is the gospel. I'm beating it in your heads. You know
48:22
it. You feel it. You've seen it. But now you're letting it fall away from you. And you're going to
48:28
instabling some other fruit. And you don't need to do that. And so I love it. I think it was a
48:36
great part that led into the Reformation with Martin Luther and just kind of opened up that,
48:42
you know what, as a person who will talk about God's sovereignty all day long is that
48:48
God did this for us, that he loved his people so much that he sent his son to die on the cross
48:56
for us so that we can be with him in eternity. I don't think there's anything more beautiful
49:00
than that. There's nothing I'm going to be able to do in my life that will ever, ever do what God
49:08
has done for me, you know, and no matter, no work I can do. And that's what he's just trying to get
49:13
at. There's nothing you're going to be able to do. You can't. It's impossible. Let God save you.
49:19
And that's what he did. Derek, final thoughts on Galatians? Yeah, I love Galatians. So I'm an
49:24
intellectual-based guy, not a feels-based guy. And so Galatians speaks to me in a way because Paul
49:30
is just one gigantic intellectual argument, right? I mean, that's the entire message of Galatians
49:35
is Jesus plus nothing equals everything. And so Ryan, I like the way that you said that. I think
49:41
Galatians is beautiful. And I forgot until you mentioned that Galatians did play a major factor
49:47
into Martin Luther, like breaking his theology and saying, "Oh, no, it is time for the Reformation."
49:53
Because how can you, you would have to completely omit the book of Galatians to miss the fact that,
49:59
no, Jesus's work, his life, death, and resurrection, his work on the cross was enough for me.
50:05
And I don't have to add anything to it. I have to believe and live, live, live through faith.
50:11
Absolutely. Yeah. And I would just add that kind of going back several weeks.
50:15
And if you're exhausted because you just feel like you keep trying and beating your head against
50:20
the wall and you can't get anywhere, you can't seem to get to that next level, so to speak,
50:26
with God, it's possible that because it's because you're working through the law. The law is there to
50:32
expose your inept ability to measure up to God's standard, but it's not what you're supposed to
50:41
live by when grace has been given to us. So accept the grace that he's been given through faith.
50:48
And just as you guys have said, and then just trust, a trust that the Holy Spirit that has been
50:54
implanted in you is all you need then to walk and to live and to live out the fruit of the Spirit.
51:03
And so for me in Galatians, I appreciate all those thoughts. I feel like in Galatians, at least
51:08
in my opinion, it's one of the most important things that Paul ever did. And one of the most
51:13
important things that Paul ever wrote, and it's both in Galatians too for me. So you have Galatians
51:17
to 11 through 14 where Paul opposes Peter to his face. He publicly rebukes him. But then perhaps,
51:23
and maybe in my opinion, I'll just going to go ahead and say this. Paul says in Galatians 2 21,
51:29
"I do not nullify the grace of God for if righteousness were through the law,
51:33
then Christ died for no purpose." That for me, I almost feel like aside from the gospels,
51:40
if you're looking at any of the epistles or any other parts in the New Testament,
51:43
if you start with Galatians 2 21 and work your theology out from there, you're probably going to
51:48
be okay. I mean, that is a very short sentence, no matter what language you write it in. But I feel
51:54
like this gives a lot of reminders to you. And guys, just overall, again, as I mentioned already,
51:59
there's a lot of people that are starting forging tables just because it's something that we're
52:02
modeling. Again, there's no professional Christians here. We all do other stuff for the most part,
52:06
like no one's got a master's in divinity, nobody's going to get their PhD, nobody works on staff at
52:11
a church or anything like that. We're just regular normal guys. Guys, we could have spent
52:15
the year on Galatians, like every episode where I say, "All right, guys, we got to cut it there."
52:21
I can feel the angst from everybody's table because you all are furiously writing notes,
52:25
and when we're talking in between these episodes, it's like, "Oh, I was going to talk about this,
52:28
and I was going to talk about that." There's always going to be more that you can share.
52:32
But guys, this is why studying the Scripture is so unbelievably important because we spent the
52:37
last six weeks going over this book. There are people that could dedicate their entire lives
52:43
to one chapter or one section of this letter, which is the better way to think about it.
52:47
I'm so thankful for all of you guys and the things that you've been able to add to this table and
52:51
certainly to what Paul put here in Galatians. But there's more to be said, but we're going to have
52:55
to leave it there. But guys, come back next Sunday because we're going to be starting a new
52:59
book of the Bible. We're going to be starting 1 Timothy. Make sure that you read 1 Timothy
53:04
1 this week so you can be prepared for the discussion next week. But guys, before we let you go,
