0:50 This is Undaunted Life A Man's Podcast.
0:53 I'm your host Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it.
0:56 Welcome back to the Forging Table.
0:59 The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:02 forges spiritual, mental and physical resilience.
1:05 At the Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:08 by digging into God's Word.
1:09 And we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with us.
1:12 That's Russ, that's Sam, that's Matt.
1:13 Guys, we're a little delirious.
1:14 It's a little bit late.
1:15 You guys don't know that because you're probably listening to this first thing on Sunday morning.
1:18 But this is the last one of this batch.
1:20 Do we got the energy?
1:21 Do we got the energy to make it through?
1:22 Absolutely.
1:23 We're going to make this exciting.
1:24 Ready.
1:25 Well, let's ride right into the scripture here.
1:27 So Sam, if you would, you've done such a good job over these last few weeks reading the scripture.
1:32 You've already got it figured out how you can talk into the mic and also read.
1:35 So let's keep that momentum going versus one through nine.
1:38 My English teacher is going to be so happy.
1:40 Are you going to send this?
1:42 Extra reading I had to do all through school.
1:44 What am I reading?
1:46 One through nine, Acts 24.
1:48 But remember, you're still having some struggles there.
1:50 So one through nine.
1:52 Paul, before Felix set, Caesarea.
1:55 And after five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with some elders and a spokesman.
2:00 One, Tertullius.
2:02 They laid before the governor of their case against Paul.
2:05 And when he had been summoned, Tertullius began to accuse him, saying,
2:09 "Since through you, we enjoy much peace.
2:13 And since by your foresight, most excellent Felix,
2:16 reforms are being made for this nation.
2:19 In every way and everywhere, we accept this with all gratitude.
2:23 But to detain you no further, I beg you and your kindness to hear us briefly.
2:29 For we have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews
2:34 throughout the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes."
2:38 He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him.
2:42 We examining him by, excuse me, by examining him yourself,
2:47 you will be able to find out from him about everything of which we accuse him.
2:52 The Jews also joined in the charge affirming that all these things were true.
2:57 So let's talk a little bit about Felix.
2:58 So apparently did a little dive into the history of Felix.
3:02 This was like a bad dude.
3:03 This was not a good dude.
3:04 He was a vile dude.
3:05 He had a penchant for being pretty cruel.
3:08 This guy was actually born a slave.
3:10 He was the son of Antonio Minor, who was the daughter of Mark Antony.
3:14 So that was interesting.
3:15 And he likely received his freedom from Emperor Claudius.
3:20 This guy was the governor of Judea from AD 52 to either AD 59 or AD 60,
3:24 depending upon which history you're reading.
3:26 But he was just overall not held in high regard.
3:29 So this was a guy that was kind of outside of polite society a little bit.
3:35 Part of that probably had to be the fact that he was slave-born.
3:37 And there were some finagling behind the scenes to get him
3:41 basically freed from slavery and things like that.
3:45 And then more finagling to get him into this position where he could rule.
3:51 But the interesting thing about all this is there was actually a very short time period
3:56 to prepare their case and to travel.
3:59 Because again, it was a 60 mile trip.
4:00 And the Jews did not have a whole lot of time to hire their spokesperson
4:05 and get their arguments together and travel.
4:07 And you can kind of see that a little bit because they have some charges.
4:12 But it made it felt like a political rally almost where they're saying things with no backing whatsoever.
4:18 But let's just dig into this first section here.
4:21 Can I say something like this?
4:22 It's a Tacitus, I had a note that Tacitus wrote in one of his histories
4:26 that he described Felix as a master of cruelty and lust who exercised the powers of a king
4:33 with the spirit of a slave.
4:34 So that is Tacitus' description of Felix in one of his histories.
4:38 You know, I believe that's a proverb that says something about like,
4:43 it's one of those that says there's three things that are not right.
4:47 Four that are abominable.
4:49 And one of them was the, you know, a barren woman and all this stuff.
4:54 And then one was a slave become king or something like that.
4:57 Because of that, we discussed in a Bible study.
5:00 It wasn't the slave factor.
5:01 It was the mentality, the cruelty mentality.
5:04 Yeah, he kept that slave mentality.
5:06 Yeah, that within, when in power, he was warning against.
5:10 That's weird.
5:11 I've never heard that.
5:12 When this is a slave culture and there was this obvious, this high-bornness, right?
5:17 So if you were born into high society, like you, you were meant to be there,
5:21 like they thought that the gods put you in that position or something like that,
5:25 the multitude of little G gods that they had there in Rome.
5:28 And then I thought that MacArthur commentary did a good job of kind of breaking down
5:32 the charges that we see in verses five through seven.
5:34 So they charged Paul with sedition.
5:36 So that's essentially rebellion before Rome, which would be a violation of Roman law.
5:41 The second is sectarianism, which is heresy, which would be a violation of Jewish law.
5:46 And the third is sacrilege, which would be blasphemy, which would be a violation of God's law.
5:50 The thing is, is all the charges were specious.
5:53 And you can kind of tell by their argument because they say, it's like, again, this is a court of law,
5:58 right? Where they're essentially at right now.
5:59 So think about the courtroom scenario, like you can't handle it.
6:02 Or think of whatever the scenario is. And they're like, this guy's a plague.
6:06 Like he's really there. That's not a legal term.
6:09 Like that they made no legal argument.
6:11 There's like, he's kind of annoying.
6:13 Like I just don't really like him.
6:14 And it's just like, y'all came 60 miles to do that.
6:18 And then you came 60 miles and mean girl, this guy.
6:20 Yeah, they didn't swear on the Bible to tell the truth.
6:23 I can tell you that, but it's interesting.
6:25 Lawyery, you know, like everybody like, they're terrible.
6:29 Well, this lawyer comes up and says like the exact opposite about Felix.
6:33 Like how great you are.
6:35 And then Paul, like the best dude in the room.
6:37 They're like the worst over there.
6:40 He got like both of them mixed, you know?
6:42 And you wonder if that played into Felix's like discernment.
6:49 They're like, yeah, anybody thinks I'm a good dude, let me hear what you've got to say.
6:55 This guy knows what I like to hear.
7:00 He's obviously blowing a lot of, you know, blowing a lot of smoke towards Felix and all
7:04 that.
7:05 But then when you get to Paul's defense, which is his third defense of himself, of the six
7:09 that he's going to eventually give recorded in scripture here, you know, he basically doesn't
7:14 do any of that.
7:15 He's not really going for the flattery part.
7:16 But again, if you've got nothing, you've got to just try.
7:19 You've got to like, okay, maybe using the word plague or whatever the word was that they
7:23 use at the time.
7:24 That really was going to land with Felix somehow like, oh, this dude's a plague.
7:29 Oh, yeah.
7:30 The plague.
7:31 That's a terrible word.
7:32 Like we don't like plagues.
7:33 And it was just like, it's just so funny because this is the best y'all got.
7:36 Like you literally decided to do this.
7:38 You all cost yourself money to do this, but maybe they're just seeing it as like a Hail
7:42 Mary.
7:43 Like, you know, maybe these charges will stick and we'll get what we want.
7:45 Well, and it's interesting that they got somebody because weren't they the ones that
7:48 brought the charges before, it was the high priest talking to, to Ananias and now they're
7:55 they're like, well, we better get a lawyer, somebody else had to do this better than us.
7:58 And it doesn't look like he does that great.
8:00 Right.
8:01 No, this looks like this looks like it was an attorney that was given to them like this.
8:05 It's like, oh, you can't afford an attorney.
8:07 It's like, well, this is the one we found.
8:09 We just cleaned them up and put us put them in a suit.
8:11 So it is what it is.
8:13 I do like how in Paul's rebuttal, he does, he's still wise, but he doesn't say anything
8:19 untrue.
8:20 So he doesn't give him flattery.
8:21 That's untrue.
8:22 But what he is, he is linking back to is that he knows that there is some wisdom that
8:27 this guy knows these people like he references that knowing that for many years you have
8:33 been judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense basically saying like, I know that
8:38 you know the background of these guys, and so I'm going to rest in the confidence that
8:42 I'm not going to flatter you and say you've been great all these years.
8:45 But at least I know who you are and I know where your decisions come from.
8:50 And I know that you know these guys.
8:51 Well, Russell, let's go ahead and get into his response.
8:53 So go ahead and read 10 through 21.
8:56 All right, 10 and when the governor had nodded to him to speak, Paul replied, knowing that
9:03 for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense.
9:08 You can verify that it is not more than 12 days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.
9:14 And they did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd either in the temple
9:19 or in the synagogues or in the city.
9:22 Neither can they prove to you that what they now bring up against me, but this I confess
9:27 to you that according to the way which they have called a sect, I worship the God of our
9:33 fathers, believing everything laid down by the law and written in the prophets, having
9:38 a hope in God, which these men themselves accept that there will be a resurrection of
9:43 both the just and the unjust.
9:46 So I so I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
9:52 Now after several years, I came to bring alms to my nation and present the offering.
9:57 While I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple without any crowd or tumult
10:02 but here before you and to make an accusation.
10:09 But some of the Jews from Asia, they ought to be here before you to make an accusation.
10:15 Should they have anything against me or else let these men themselves say what wrong doing
10:19 they have found when I stood before the council other than this one thing that I cried out
10:24 while standing among them.
10:26 It is with respect to the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you this
10:30 day.
10:31 And that's the key.
10:33 That's the sticking point right there at the end is that he believes in the resurrection.
10:37 And so we've got all this where he doesn't systematically defeat the charges of sedition,
10:43 sectarianism and sacrilege, you know, as directly as you might think, but he does leave
10:50 the main thing to be the main thing, which is let's just be real Felix, like the reason
10:54 I'm here is because I believe in the resurrection, like that's the reason that I'm here, which
10:59 I mean, that's the sticking point for all of humanity, for all of eternity, right?
11:06 So I struggle with, but was that why he was there?
11:13 Because going back before this is just kind of a weird deal that he does here is he says
11:17 it was because of the resurrection, which I think I think this may allude to the fact
11:20 that Paul was more worried about trying to find his end to share the gospel than he was
11:26 about trying to defend himself because really the reason they got mad, it wasn't at the
11:32 word of the resurrection.
11:34 It was at the word of the Gentiles that had really set them off.
11:38 So understand that he is maybe attacking their arguments, but it is strange that it was very
11:44 specific about the idea that the acceptance of the Gentiles is what really triggered them.
11:51 But here he is bringing up the resurrection almost as if he is baiting them to ask him
11:56 about resurrection.
11:57 I don't know.
11:58 Yeah, that was the Pharisees Sadducees was about the resurrection part, right?
12:03 That's what kind of set them off.
12:04 And I was wondering the same thing.
12:06 That's why he said that or I think you're right, though.
12:09 I think a couple of times he was almost out and then he brings it back to like, here's
12:13 why I'm here.
12:14 Yeah, because there were some Pharisees already believed in the resurrection.
12:18 So again, it's almost like he's using this deal to gather the Pharisees on his side.
12:23 But here it doesn't seem like that was his goal as much to just bring up resurrection.
12:29 Yeah, it almost seems like God knew that 2000 years later we would be reading this and would
12:36 have to ourselves come and face that reality that it all comes down to.
12:44 Do you believe in the resurrection of Christ for yourself and for like the final judgment?
12:52 It's not just not just that Christ resurrected.
12:54 It's that there will be a final resurrection and a final judgment because he says the resurrection
13:01 of the just and the unjust, which kind of alludes to the day of final judgment where
13:08 everybody, regardless of your standing, whether you're in Christ or not in Christ, there will
13:13 be a final judgment and we will all be resurrected to the seat and the throne of God to hear
13:19 whether we're going to spend eternity with him or we're going to be cast into the fire.
13:25 And I think that resonates with me because I think we all have to reckon with that.
13:32 And in God's sovereignty, like this letter has been like saved and passed down and put
13:39 in this Bible so we can read this and know I've got to come to groups with this too.
13:44 And I've got to put myself on trial and know, okay, do I believe that?
13:49 Do I believe in the resurrection of Christ and how that impacts my eternity?
13:53 So that's kind of where my head went and some of that so nailed it.
13:59 I'm trying to think when it says it is with respect to the resurrection of the dead.
14:04 Are you all saying like do we think he's talking about Jesus or when, you know, at the end
14:12 of time when the dead are resurrected or just the concept of resurrection to begin with?
14:19 Does that make sense?
14:20 I'd say that again.
14:22 Do we know what Paul is referring to?
14:24 Is he referring to the resurrection of Jesus or the resurrection of the dead at the end
14:29 of time, right?
14:31 Or just the concept of resurrection because like the Sadducees didn't believe in resurrection
14:35 or angels or any of that stuff, right?
14:38 And so I'm just wondering what specifically he's referring to.
14:43 Well, I think he says like he says in there, where is it, he talks about the resurrection
14:48 of the just and the unjust, which to me, and I think to them would speak to the final judgment,
14:56 the final resurrection, here it is, which these men themselves accept that there will
15:02 be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.
15:07 And that I think to me says, I'm talking about the end times when there will be the
15:14 final judgment, maybe I'm wrong.
15:18 Well, the only thing that makes me think that it is specifically about Christ, which I still
15:24 have problems with relating why he brought that up versus the Gentiles, but the thing
15:29 that makes me think specifically about Christ doesn't happen until 22.
15:33 So I don't want to jump ahead, I've already done that once, jump ahead into 22.
15:38 But it says that Felix having rather accurate knowledge of the way put them off the way
15:44 capitalized.
15:45 And so he references the way in kind of this code language, you almost wonder if he didn't,
15:50 if he knew somehow that Felix's wife and Felix knew about the way and he because Felix sure
15:57 does think that he's talking about the way being the Christians, the people that believe
16:01 in Christ resurrection.
16:03 So it makes me think that he is pointing to Christ.
16:05 So reading from the stock commentary on the Logos Bible app, by the way, if you don't
16:09 want the Logos Bible app, get a discount.
16:11 Where would you go?
16:12 Yeah, discount.
16:13 Why wouldn't that guys?
16:14 Why would you pay for free?
16:15 But yeah, people are always wondering how can I get that?
16:16 How can I get that?
16:17 Where do you find that at?
16:18 In the show notes, Sam.
16:19 Show notes.
16:20 So go to the show notes of this episode.
16:21 So Oh, you're listening to this on the Apple podcast.
16:24 You know what?
16:25 Go to the show notes.
16:26 It's a hyperlink.
16:27 You know what it'll take you?
16:28 My website.
16:29 You know what's on the website in the show notes, a link to Logos where you can get it at a discount.
16:33 Can I, can I, to the undaunted life there also?
16:37 Yeah.
16:38 You can also donate to undaunted life because we are a donation based ministry.
16:40 I don't know if you've heard me talk about that before, but if you want to see us, you
16:43 know, equipment around the globe to push back darkness, we need guys, just like the guys
16:46 at this table and the guys listening to this are watching this right now, top on board
16:49 and be a donor.
16:50 I don't know if anybody's ever heard of before.
16:51 We're going to need that donation because this table is getting out of me.
16:54 Yes.
16:55 Sam is going after it.
16:56 There is an indentation on your side of the table and it wasn't there when you got here.
16:59 Yeah.
17:00 I'm reading inside of this right now, it's just a couple of sentences.
17:03 It says, and this is the stock commentary.
17:06 The fact is that the Pharisees had declared him Paul innocent of any crime.
17:11 So we see that in chapter 23, verse nine, only the Sadducees thought him guilty and
17:16 that only of a theological belief concerning the resurrection of the dead.
17:21 So that doesn't seem to be as specific as the resurrection of Jesus.
17:27 That's in just this one commentary.
17:30 I can look at another.
17:31 You know why?
17:32 Because the Logos Bible software is endless.
17:33 And so I'm just going to go to Bible library and I'm just going to type in acts and we're
17:38 just going to go to another guy.
17:39 So they're saying that the accusing party here was now just made up of Sadducees.
17:45 Right.
17:46 And the only sticking point that they have is the theological belief in a resurrection
17:56 in the resurrection of the dead, not a specific resurrection of a particular Nazarene.
18:01 I just don't relate that to the Gentile thing and where it was supposed to.
18:05 I whistled in that.
18:06 That was very loud in the headphones.
18:09 I know.
18:10 I wasn't going to say anything.
18:11 But since you're specific about the Gentiles, so that was what they got mad about back then.
18:17 But I think when he first got pulled in, it was because they thought he was the head of
18:20 the assassins, right?
18:21 The Egyptian.
18:22 Right.
18:23 Like, wow, they had him like, hey, by the way, this guy, all right.
18:28 This is another commentary.
18:29 I forgot the name, so I'm just going to read it.
18:32 Here it is again.
18:33 Somehow preachers in the acts get to the resurrection before they finish.
18:37 Paul claimed to be a good Jew practicing Jewish customs and expecting the Jewish hope of resurrection.
18:43 What possible crime could Rome find with that?
18:46 Here we have the key verse in our chapter and the unifying message of acts.
18:54 All that I do think he's trying to, Paul was always about preaching the gospel.
19:00 He's trying to find a way to preach together.
19:03 Or setting it up.
19:04 I don't know.
19:05 Matt, you feel like you look like you've got thoughts.
19:08 No, I'm just trying to think through this.
19:10 These are really good points to bring up.
19:11 I think there's definitely an implication there.
19:14 I'm not sure.
19:15 I'm not sure what the implication to me is just resurrection, and specifically what happens
19:22 at the end.
19:23 I only say that because he references the just and the unjust, so he's clearly trying to
19:28 talk about resurrection in general.
19:31 That could have been aimed at the king who's a slave and now a king.
19:35 My argument for what mine is.
19:37 He's seen both sides of justice.
19:38 What I think is that it's just what the Bible says.
19:42 All right, we need to talk about that.
19:46 This happens to be a guy that we know and love.
19:48 Joby Martin, he loves to say that quote, but Joby, if you're listening to this right now
19:52 and know that you are, because you listen to all the episodes.
19:55 If that were true, if we just do what the Bible says, because the Bible says what it
19:58 says, there would not be any denominations except for one, because we would just read
20:03 the Bible.
20:04 We would know exactly what the words mean, and then we would also in turn know exactly
20:07 what to do with that.
20:08 So we would have not only correct orthodoxy, but orthopraxie, but because there are a million
20:13 different denominations, I guess it says what it says, but not everyone knows exactly what
20:18 it says and how to apply that.
20:20 Is that fair?
20:21 That's fair.
20:22 Yeah.
20:23 I do want to point out it wasn't low, it was about the belt.
20:26 Okay.
20:27 Come on.
20:28 I'll take it.
20:29 Rest says play.
20:30 Play.
20:31 What are you saying, Sam?
20:33 Paul talks about himself again, and I'm trying to find it here.
20:37 I went lost it.
20:39 Okay, here's another commentary.
20:46 The only specific point came out that came out at the Sanhedrin hearing.
20:51 This is verse 21, and it was a doctrinal point that half of the Sanhedrin agreed with,
20:57 the resurrection of the dead.
20:59 So it looks like it's just the concept overall of the resurrection of the dead, not specifically
21:06 that Paul is claiming with the gospel that the resurrection of Jesus.
21:11 So here, this is another point that I think logically, where Paul's going, like you have
21:18 to believe that the resurrection in general is possible.
21:21 If you don't believe that resurrection in general is possible, talking, going to your
21:25 point, Sam, of Paul setting it up, if you don't believe that resurrection is possible
21:30 in general, there's no way you would ever get to the belief that Christ then resurrected
21:37 himself or was resurrected on the third day as our savior.
21:42 So he's got to set up the belief and I'm just trying to go on this trail here.
21:46 He's got to set up the belief and make the point that resurrection in general is possible
21:52 in a thing that happens to then say, and our hope is in the resurrection, which now you
21:58 know, and I've made the point that it's real is in the resurrection.
22:03 Our hope is in the resurrection of Christ.
22:05 Oh, no, maybe that's maybe I'm wrong.
22:08 Sorry, Joby.
22:09 Just a preeminent.
22:10 Sorry, Joby.
22:11 Well, I mean, I don't think it does.
22:12 I think it does make you think that there were probably more Pharisee converts to Christianity
22:18 than Sadducees.
22:19 Yes.
22:20 They had less of a hurdle to jump over to say that, well, we do believe in resurrection.
22:25 So at least that part is not the obstacle for us to believe that someone was raised from
22:30 the dead.
22:31 Yeah.
22:32 It's kind of like whenever you hear about converts in Africa, like they just culturally
22:37 already believe in the supernatural and they believe in miracles and all that.
22:41 So I was like, Oh, yeah, cool.
22:42 Yeah.
22:43 Miracles.
22:44 Yeah.
22:45 So which, which guy did these miracles?
22:46 And so it's like, whereas here in our kind of Western scientific, you know, post Christian
22:50 society, it's like really the red sea parted.
22:53 We're very much the world is just stuff.
22:56 Yeah.
22:57 And that's not the case.
22:58 Yeah.
22:59 World isn't just stuff.
23:00 But this is a great thing to come out of.
23:02 This is what Bible study and looking and researching and like, this is what it looks like live.
23:07 Like we're trying to figure this out.
23:09 And we don't have it all figured out.
23:11 So we're trying to process through that and navigate it.
23:13 Yeah.
23:14 Well, here's a slightly different perspective on the exact same thing.
23:18 I just keep digging.
23:19 Where'd you find that?
23:20 So this is on the Lagos Bible software.
23:21 If I don't know if you've heard of Lagos, but Lagos, they have the most powerful Bible
23:25 software on planet Earth.
23:27 And you know, it's available to everyone in our audience, but at a discount, what do
23:30 they call it?
23:31 Logos.
23:32 Logos?
23:33 Does that mean like the logos, Lagos?
23:35 Yeah.
23:36 It was literally forgotten.
23:37 It was a joke.
23:38 Did I miss it?
23:39 Logos is the word and that's what John calls Jesus wisdom, wisdom, reason, truth, truth.
23:48 Yeah.
23:49 Yeah.
23:50 Interesting story while you're looking that up.
23:51 So in...
23:52 Already got it.
23:53 Already got it.
23:54 Gets your story.
23:55 In oriental courts, the king would hear, he would have people come in and he would hear
24:00 cases or he would hear questions and they would bring these things to him and he would
24:04 make decisions.
24:05 He would make judgments as the king.
24:07 And when he got tired, they would close the curtain.
24:11 So nobody could be near him.
24:14 He'd close the curtain.
24:15 He'd retire to his bedroom, but then he'd have, like his number two or somebody, take
24:19 his place.
24:20 He'd take off the medallion with the seal of the king, put it on this guy that steps
24:24 in his place.
24:25 This guy literally comes out representing the king.
24:29 What he said was the king's word to disobey him was to die.
24:34 So he'd make these judgments because the king's like, "Okay, I can't do this anymore.
24:37 I don't want to do this.
24:38 You're going to go to my place."
24:39 The curtain would open.
24:40 He'd be there.
24:41 He would be seen and treated by everyone in the room as the king.
24:45 You know what they call them?
24:47 The logos.
24:48 The logos.
24:49 It's in place of the king.
24:52 And so that's like...
24:54 Reference probably too, as if the word of the king.
24:58 Right.
24:59 Right.
25:00 He is the word of the king.
25:01 And so that is a very instrumental in people at that time understanding who Jesus was.
25:08 He was the word of the king.
25:10 He was in place of the king.
25:11 He was the king.
25:13 So I don't know.
25:14 I just always find that a very interesting thing different.
25:16 You've seen me.
25:17 No, me.
25:18 Yeah.
25:19 That's cool.
25:20 That imputed righteousness.
25:21 Right.
25:22 That's kind of what you have in that moment.
25:23 So, here's another perspective.
25:24 On verse 21, Paul had a wonderful ability to bring up the resurrection of Jesus in all
25:31 sorts of contexts.
25:32 The resurrection...
25:33 Keep going.
25:34 Yes.
25:35 I would if you'd shut your mouth.
25:36 The resurrection...
25:37 The resurrection is indeed a central doctrine to the Christian faith that shows the sufficiency
25:42 of Christ's death, the supremacy of his lordship, and the inevitable return as Judge, capital
25:47 J.
25:48 We do well to follow Paul's example of funneling conversations to this life-changing world
25:53 altering event.
25:55 So what you're saying is everybody at this table is right.
25:57 If you read enough commentaries.
25:58 Yeah.
25:59 Yeah, you'll get there eventually.
26:01 So start with what you want the desired outcome to be and then just go find someone that agrees
26:06 with it.
26:08 Boom.
26:09 Yeah.
26:10 That's like a great way to operate.
26:11 That sounds like a great way to approach.
26:12 Or do you guys do a Bible study and listen to everybody's point of view and they're
26:17 realize even somebody that has a different one actually has some backing, you know, because
26:22 it did open my eyes a little bit of what you were saying, like, makes sense.
26:25 Or Paul is brilliant and he's doing both.
26:29 He's playing chess.
26:30 Yeah.
26:31 Yeah.
26:32 Out there.
26:33 And those guys are like...
26:34 Everybody else is playing tic-tac-toe.
26:35 Yeah.
26:36 They're not even playing...
26:37 Cheggers.
26:38 They're playing tic-tac-toe.
26:39 All right.
26:40 I don't know that we've actually sufficiently gone through that section.
26:41 You know, we could probably dig a little deeper.
26:42 Anybody else got something on a 10 through 21?
26:46 Going once.
26:47 Nice.
26:48 Let's close it out.
26:51 We will take a volunteer's tribute to read the remainder of this chapter, so that's 22
26:55 through 27.
26:56 I'll do it.
26:57 I feel like I've missed a few.
26:59 I haven't read in all of them, so I'll go.
27:03 22 through 27.
27:05 But Felix, have you...
27:09 We can tell we're towards the end.
27:13 Oh, man.
27:14 Here we go.
27:15 Okay.
27:16 He's having a rather accurate knowledge of the way.
27:18 Put them off saying, "When Lisius the Tribune comes down, I will decide your case."
27:23 Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody, but have some
27:28 liberty and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs.
27:32 After some days, Felix came with his wife, Jerusalem, who was Jewish, and he sent for
27:37 Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
27:41 And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix
27:45 was alarmed and said, "Go away for the present.
27:48 When I get an opportunity, I will summon you."
27:51 At the same time, he hoped that money would be given him by Paul, so he went for him often
27:56 and conversed with him.
27:58 When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus and desiring to do the Jews
28:05 a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.
28:08 So that kind of sucks.
28:09 And so we have like a two-year thing, like in one sentence, we've got like two years
28:13 of the story that gets lost.
28:16 The interesting thing about this, it talks about Festus here.
28:19 Festus was known as a great leader.
28:20 And so he was known as somebody that was better than the leader before him, which was Felix
28:24 and better than the leader after him.
28:25 Pretty low bar, though.
28:26 Yeah.
28:27 I mean, apparently, Felix was just an absolute train wreck of a human being, but there was
28:31 an interesting thing about this.
28:32 And we talked about this.
28:33 I think it was last week, but this was in the MacArthur commentary.
28:37 Felix had brutally suppressed a riot in Caesarea, and that infuriated the Jews who managed to
28:42 complain to Rome and have him replaced.
28:44 So just think about that.
28:45 The Jews got together and complained in such a compelling way that Felix had been too heavy
28:51 handed to put that down this rebellion.
28:53 So let's go back to it.
28:54 Emperor Nero recalled him to Rome.
28:56 This is Felix where he would be, where he would have faced severe punishment if his influential
29:01 brother, palace, that's P-A-L-L-A-S, P-A-S, had not interceded for him.
29:07 And so Felix was just an absolute screw up.
29:10 If not for his brother, he probably would have faced some incredibly serious and brutal
29:15 retribution from Nero.
29:17 But that's basically what happened there at the end, but not for nothing.
29:20 He was responsible for making sure Paul stayed in prison because it's like, okay, yeah, sorry,
29:26 Jews, you know, I was a little heavy handed back in the day, y'all got me removed from
29:29 my office.
29:30 But as a favor to you guys, just to try to smooth it over, we'll just leave him in prison
29:34 for two years.
29:35 No biggie.
29:36 So I think there's a lot, a lot here in this, um, as he reasoned about righteousness and
29:44 self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed.
29:49 Like I, there's, there's something in that, and I love the idea that so he sent him away,
29:54 but then he keeps him for two years and it doesn't say he kept him and he didn't talk
29:59 to him.
30:00 He, for two years, I mean, this tells me that maybe Paul's motive, if it was to bring up
30:06 the resurrection, that his motive succeeded and that he got him to a point of curiosity.
30:13 And then he reasoned with him, almost apologetic style, like he reasoned with him about the
30:17 things that he knew he was interested in and maybe lacking in righteousness, self-control
30:24 and coming judgment.
30:25 Those are all things that it sounds like whenever we read about Felix sounds like those were
30:29 things that were not in his will house that he was bringing up and he was saying, let
30:34 me tell you about this Jesus and how it should affect what your flaws are.
30:39 That's, that's kind of where I was going with that too.
30:40 Like there was a little bit of conviction within Felix and he like he sends him away.
30:46 That made me think of that quote by saying a guston that says, people love truth when
30:50 it enlightens them, but hate truth when it accuses them.
30:53 And so that, I mean, you can clearly see, or there is implication that he was feeling
30:57 accused and there was some conviction in his heart.
30:59 So he's like, Oh gosh, I got to get out of here.
31:01 Because that doesn't feel good because I'm being kind of called to the mat there.
31:04 So that's a good lesson in apologetics too, is that we have to be okay with the idea
31:10 that some of the things that we are going to say are going to alarm people, hopefully
31:14 enough for them to be alarmed enough to want to understand it better so that they can understand
31:22 where they fall on that line.
31:24 And a lot of times like this is another good thing to, to say about apologetics is we see
31:28 here that it takes time.
31:32 I don't think anybody could argue that Paul is not doing apologetics here whenever he
31:35 starts spending this two years with him reasoning and righteousness and self control and then
31:41 coming judgment and then starts talking about more and more stuff.
31:44 It takes a lot of time.
31:47 And we obviously know that some of the self control stuff probably didn't take.
31:51 And he probably wasn't done with, with what Paul had planned to do with him by the time
31:56 that what you said happened and his heavy hand comes down, Paul is probably, yep, I've
32:01 been working with him on that.
32:03 That's interesting.
32:04 I just lost my train of thought, Oh, to your point about truth, like, yes, truth can offend,
32:12 but we should always be ready to tell the truth because it's not on us and we can, we
32:19 can be so burdened by wanting to skate around the truth to not offend somebody.
32:23 So our quote unquote witnesses not hurt, but it's, it's not us who is going to bring someone
32:30 to Christ or to help or to finally get them to understand.
32:34 But we may be part of the process.
32:36 I think Greg Cokel says, most of us are not harvesters.
32:40 We are gardeners and we tend to the garden.
32:43 We can water the plants, but we're not going to harvest.
32:46 That's God's the harvester.
32:48 He's going to, he's going to take it when it's ready.
32:50 And I think sometimes we can flip those and think, Oh, gosh, I shouldn't say that because
32:54 I want him to come to Christ so bad that I just, I should, maybe I shouldn't say that,
32:59 but we should, we shouldn't be a dick about it, but we should just tell the truth.
33:05 Makes me think of the parable of the sewer and that there are weeds grown around some
33:09 people.
33:10 And sometimes our job is not to worry about their growth, but to worry about clearing some
33:15 of those choking weeds away, you know, helping them be able to breathe to grow to maturity
33:20 and things like that.
33:22 And probably the same thing in our own lives, but a good point.
33:26 And Felix put him away for two years, right?
33:29 He's, it's on his conscious, he's thinking about it and said a deal and with it.
33:33 It's like, I'll take care of that another day.
33:36 One Felix can be pretty patient because it seems like he's, he's trying to get money.
33:40 He's trying to think that, Hey, there's going to be payday for some, you know, for this
33:44 at some point, but he runs out of, you know, runway before he can get off the ground.
33:48 I think I heard it said that when that he probably had an idea of how much money Paul
33:55 actually brought to pay at the, at the temple, right?
34:00 Cause that's what he went and he paid for those guys.
34:03 And so there was probably a misconception by Felix as well that maybe Paul or his associates
34:08 and friends, it behooved Felix to let his friends come because it was building up this
34:13 GoFundMe type thing to be like, all right, let's get Paul out of, Paul out of jail.
34:18 Yeah.
34:19 And it doesn't seem like it played out that way.
34:21 Acts 21, 17, when he had counted Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly because they
34:25 had cheddar.
34:26 And so they, they brought a lot of money.
34:28 And so it's like, yeah, I would receive you gladly as well.
34:30 Cause that's exactly what we needed at that moment.
34:32 All about Gentile money.
34:33 That's right.
34:34 We don't like, we don't like the Gentiles, but we like their money.
34:37 That's right.
34:38 It all spins the same.
34:39 Interesting, like, one of the things that sticks out to me is he had a rather accurate
34:45 knowledge of the way, like in some of the commentary, I think in, in, uh, mine and Sam's
34:50 Bible says that probably because of his wife, who was Jewish, um, and so he had some knowledge
34:56 there of, of what was going on with them.
34:59 But that's, that's interesting that he was in a position, had the knowledge, um, to do
35:05 what he did.
35:06 Like, I don't think there's a lot of other people that probably knew, you know, a lot
35:11 about this new thing that was happening.
35:14 Um, so an interesting thing about Driscilla is like, I saw this, that she was a teenager
35:21 at the time that she was married, that she was actually wooed away by Felix from, from
35:25 her previous husband, but he was responsible for her divorce.
35:28 Yeah.
35:29 And then so Driscilla was the youngest daughter of hair to grip of the first and that's the
35:32 hair that killed James and X 12. And so there's a lot of that's kind of connections here
35:37 with all this. And so we don't know to what extent, uh, she gave Felix an understanding
35:42 of the way, but you can see that there was enough understanding to where there was an
35:46 impact there. But yeah, I think, I mean, I'm Russ, I'm with you that I think verse 25
35:50 is that key verse where you're talking about, he's talking to him or righteousness, self
35:54 control and the coming judgment.
35:56 If he had just stopped after righteousness and self control, you're just annoying. It's
36:00 like you're, you're, you're pecking out the edges of my personality. And maybe that I
36:03 don't like that. But hey, because you are that way, there's a coming judgment. It's not
36:08 just for you, Felix, just for everybody. And so I'm reminded of different times when I've
36:13 seen, um, conservative commentators or, you know, pro life advocates or something like
36:19 that, whenever they're talking to people and then they, they say something that the person
36:25 on the other side finds just to be anathema, like they couldn't believe it. So I'll use
36:29 an extreme example. So when you see a pro life, like there's a thing called abolitionists
36:33 rising, they basically take the signs, they go out on, you know, sidewalks and different,
36:37 you know, public places and they try to engage people in a discussion about, uh, the issue
36:40 of life. And you know, these people automatically, they're, they're just getting hectic and frantic
36:46 and manic. And they're just like, so if my little sister who's 14 were raped, you're
36:51 saying that she should carry her rapist baby.
36:55 And eventually the person says, I do not think that the baby should get the death penalty
36:59 for something that their father did. And these people are like, Oh, I can't believe
37:03 you would say something so evil because to them, it sounds evil. It sounds like that's
37:08 the evil thing. It's like no, actually it's evil to give an innocent bystander the death
37:13 penalty for something that they had nothing to do with, right? Name, name another scenario
37:17 where that would be okay. Just one y'all wait. Yeah. I mean, I'd tell people all the time,
37:21 like if my dad decided to knock over a liquor store in law in Oklahoma and on his way out
37:27 the door, shoot the clerk in the head. If I get the death penalty for that, that's, that's
37:32 a people would be like, yeah, of course that's ridiculous. You would say that was just right.
37:36 Right. But in this scenario, it's like we're putting a value judgment on certain humans
37:41 and saying, no, I value this person and their autonomy above the other person. And then there's
37:45 a million other arguments within the pro life circle. Again, they think that the baby is
37:49 somehow, you know, the same thing as the mother not a separate entity that is inside of the
37:54 other entity or something like that. But it just reminds me of something like this to
37:57 where he just, you know, Felix pushes Paul way. It's like, nope, nope, nope. Nope. I don't
38:01 want to hear that. I don't want to hear about this coming judgment. I don't want to hear
38:06 any of that because if I have to hear about it, I have to reckon with it. Yeah. And that's
38:10 the thing I think I talked about a couple of weeks ago about intellectual honesty. There's
38:13 such a dearth of intellectual honesty because people don't want their positions to be challenged.
38:18 But people, especially people that tend to be more conservative politically or Christians
38:23 or things like that, these are people that want to know the truth. Okay. There's this
38:27 assumption that it's the Christians that are the ones plugging their ears and sitting
38:31 in the corner like, no, I don't want my position challenged. It's like, that's not the Christians
38:34 that I know. The Christians that I know are digging into apology apologetics. They are
38:38 hearing arguments from ardent, you know, atheists and you know, militant agnostics and things
38:44 like that because they want to know, is my philosophy sound? Is my entire worldview based
38:50 on faith, which is essentially nothing when it comes to the world of proof. Right? And
38:55 so that's, that's what we see as another example here of a unrighteous evil man. The moment
39:01 he is presented with something that, you know, crescendos with his judgment, he's like, no,
39:05 I don't want any part of this. Yeah. And I think we should be leery of that in our own
39:11 lives to know and pray that we have the discernment to see if that is us because it doesn't matter.
39:19 We all have blind spots. And so if someone is speaking truth to us and I'm saying this
39:24 to myself more than, more than anybody else is we should be able to hear that and have
39:30 an open mind to that and be able to take some reflection and go, okay, is that me? And at
39:37 the same time, like be praying for those people who don't and the people in your life who
39:42 are like Felix because there's more of those people out there than not that their heart
39:48 would be open, their mind would be open to the truth because at the end of the day, we're
39:56 all going to see God. And there's only two options on the table. There's no, there's
40:03 no gray area. There's no, all right, B plus is good. It's either you're either all in
40:08 or you're all out. And we should be praying for people to be opened and know Christ just
40:16 as we do. I would, I would like to make, you know, to go cut off of that is to make the
40:22 argument that we are all Felix, kind of we are all Felix. And, and there are times that
40:29 we all should be Felix in the sense of we should be in the word. And I'm sure this has
40:35 happened to y'all have, have everybody probably has one right now that you, you've read a
40:41 verse and it alarms you. There's something about it that just sticks with you and you
40:45 don't deal with it right then, you got to put it away. And it seems like it just keeps
40:50 on coming up and it keeps on coming up. And, and two years down the road, you find yourself
40:56 going back to that verse and being like, man, what is it that alarms me about this? What
41:00 is it that sits so uneasy with me about this? And you go back and you have conversations
41:06 with that verse and things like that. So there's part of that that Felix is going through
41:11 that almost feel like is healthy. Like a healthy example of to be alarmed by something, but
41:17 don't get too distant, don't get too distant from those things that alarm you. Yeah, allow
41:22 those things that alarm you from the word to stay close to you while you digest what
41:28 that means to the gospel is a double edged sword. It shouldn't and should cut, but it
41:32 should also bring hope. And for me, I think it's Galatians. I think it's Galatians where
41:38 Paul talks about the man and somebody correct me if I'm wrong, the man who doesn't provide
41:44 for his family is worse than an unbeliever. Man, I think about that a lot as a leader
41:49 of a family and that haunts me. And not that I like, I don't feel like I'm not, but like,
41:54 I just think about that so much like, man, if I'm ever in a place where I'm not providing
42:00 for my family, like I'm Paul would say I'm worse than an unbeliever.
42:04 That's first Timothy five, eight. And whenever I've been at the worst parts of my career,
42:08 it's killing it on low go straight. Yeah. That was just Google going. But the, I knew
42:15 we did it on the forging table. I knew we talked about on the forging table. So I knew
42:18 it was one of those. Well, and the thing about it is at the worst parts of my career, right?
42:24 And I've had some really low lows in my career, especially in sales where things just aren't
42:28 going your way and things aren't breaking your way. And I read that scripture and I'm like,
42:32 yeah, crap, crap. I'm going to hell because I can't close the deal, right? In the level
42:38 of like pressure you put on yourself or if you're in a job that's just not fulfilling
42:42 and that it's not leading to, you know, betterment for your family. But the scariest scripture
42:46 for me of all the scriptures is Matthew 7 21. Not everyone who says to me, the Lord Lord
42:51 will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my father who isn't
42:55 heaven. And I'm like, shoot, shoot. Like, am I, am I that one? Am I the one that's like
43:01 talking about him on the podcast? Oh, now on the airwaves. And then I'm like, but Jesus,
43:05 I did it, you know, 700 episodes in your name. It's like, nope, get out of my presence.
43:09 I didn't know you. I think it's Martin Lloyd Jones. Oh, I can Google it here. So you just
43:15 get close and then says, and I think there's other verses where there's some similar commentary.
43:20 The person who's most worried that they are the person who Jesus will say, I never knew
43:26 you is probably not in danger. It's the guy who's like, I'm good. I agree. That's the one.
43:31 That's the person who's probably in danger of being said that or Jesus saying that to
43:36 them. If you're worried about it, probably a pretty good start. Yes. Well, I'm worried
43:41 about it. So according to Martin Lloyd Jones, that's a good sign. It's a good sign. While
43:44 we're on the subject matter and while I've got Google at my fingertips, is there another
43:49 scripture that is absolutely terrifying to you or should I ask Chad GPT? I think the all
43:54 the ones about like your house and the curse follows you for generations. I think that's
43:58 huge. And me and my house, I would love to do a deep dive on that sometime. Just how
44:04 much it affects the good things you do, the bad things you do, how that affects your house
44:09 and the Old Testament talks a lot about like if you believe your whole house goes to heaven
44:14 or your whole house is saved and I don't know. I need to just do some deep diving on it, but
44:20 I think it's part of that. Like I'm a little scared of it too. Like what all does that
44:24 mean? What kind of control and power do I have here? Yeah, I think talking about our
44:32 kids and our family salvation, I think is really scary specifically from like the dominion
44:39 that we've been given as heads of families and the judgment that we will see in greater
44:47 magnitude as the leader of a family. Just as pastors are held to a higher standard,
44:53 we are held to a higher standard as leaders of family. And so I think there is a daunting aspect
44:57 of if my kids aren't saved, like to a certain extent, that's on me. And so to your point,
45:07 yeah, that's a pretty scary thing to think about. No, man, it just means there weren't elect.
45:12 No big deal. That's also true. It's just what it says. It just says it.
45:17 So the two that affect me are the one that I shared last week about the blood of Christ not
45:24 being able to be shed twice for that. That was one that used to affect me more. But it all I would
45:33 lie if I said that it doesn't bring me to complete broken in contriteness before the Lord.
45:38 And I think that's where that should bring me. It puts me in a good perspective of where I stand
45:46 with the Lord and that everything is about grace. The other one for anybody that does any preaching
45:51 or teaching is the verse that talks about that many people should not teach or should not preach.
45:59 It's James too, right? Yeah. James also.
46:01 Yeah. That they will be judged more harshly. And so that one every time, you know, even doing
46:07 podcasts like this or doing anything just is one to, it's another kind of one of those
46:13 Paul scriptures, like if you're Felix and that's Paul to be alarmed by, keep close to you,
46:19 have conversations about that scripture with yourself to remind yourself, again, there is a
46:26 coming judgment. There's an uneasiness with that for a reason that I probably need to keep
46:32 front of mind. I agree with that. I think, again, back to the double edged sword part,
46:37 there's an old Shane and Shane song. I don't, I think it's Shane and Shane. I think they're
46:41 the ones that wrote it. Oklahoma. It's, it's. You just get close. You just get close.
46:46 Get close. So it's talking about like the devil, like preaching the word to him.
46:52 Embracing accusation? Yeah. That's what it's called. I don't know if that's changed.
46:55 It's, it's their song that they wrote. So he's talking. Yeah, I just had that one right ago.
47:00 The devil is preaching, like preaching scripture over him. And he's talking about like how I am
47:06 not worthy and I am just a sinner and he goes through this whole and he's speaking truth. He's
47:12 speaking scripture and it's truth, but it's only half truth in the, the, the chorus is talking about
47:16 what he's got in the, he's forgotten the refrain that Jesus saves. And so we should view scripture
47:22 in light of coming judgment and that should terrify us. But then on the flip side,
47:27 Jesus finishes it out and Jesus saves us and we're, if we're in Christ, we're, we're all good.
47:34 Let me actually read it. I think it's worth reading this here. So again, it sounds cooler when
47:38 Shane and Shane is harmonizing it, but this is embracing accusation by Shane and Shane. And I
47:41 think it's off of the pages album. That's correct. The father of lies coming to steal, kill and
47:47 destroy all my hopes of being good enough. I hear him saying, cursed are the ones who can't abide.
47:53 He's right. Hallelujah. He's right. The devil is preaching the song of the redeemed that I am
47:58 cursed and gone astray. I cannot gain salvation embracing accusation. Could the father of lies be
48:05 telling the truth of God to me tonight? If the penalty of sin is death, then death is mine.
48:10 I hear him saying, cursed are the ones who can't abide. He's right. Hallelujah. He's right. The
48:16 devil is preaching the song of the redeemed that I am cursed and gone astray. I cannot gain salvation.
48:21 Oh, the devil singing over me an age old song that I am cursed and gone astray, astray, singing the
48:27 first verse so conveniently over me, he's forgotten the refrain. Jesus saves. He redeemed us from the
48:33 curse of the law. And that's basically, it just keeps repeating that he's redeemed us from the
48:38 curse of the law. And so, but the thing is, is when you listen to it, which I would highly recommend
48:43 embracing accusation by Shane, Shane, check it out on YouTube or Apple music or Spotify or whatever,
48:47 it's a buildup. It is a slow burn until you get to the, but he's forgotten the refrain.
48:54 Jesus saves to where it's like, yeah, yeah, you're right. You're right. The accusation
48:58 is correct. It's correct. It's correct. But you've forgotten the refrain. Jesus saves.
49:03 You forgot the mic drop, absolutely drops coming. Russ, I'm going to go back to your
49:07 thing. I can't quite find the scripture that you're talking about about the blood of Jesus twice.
49:11 Help me with Google terms, because I'm not even getting closer. I'm just going to say words that
49:17 you know what I'm talking about. I'm pretty sure it's in James. That's where I wish. Hey,
49:22 you just need to have Terry on any time I'm here, because I'm really half of a
49:27 functional podcaster. I want to see if Sam can get it before Kyle.
49:32 Oh, okay. So hurry up. Give me some, give me some to Google here.
49:35 It's about just type in verse about not being able to be saved a second time.
49:41 Oh, come on. That's going to make it hard.
49:48 And then look for a verse in possibly James. Matt, can you like wrap or something so there's not
50:01 dead air? All those years of Bible drills is not helping me right now.
50:05 I wasn't going to say it to your point about like what the Shane and Shane song says about
50:09 the use of like the scripture that condemns him without the salvation piece. It reminds me of when
50:16 Satan tempts Jesus and the use of scripture out of context without the full picture of what that
50:25 is. I think a better and not to try to dog on Shane and Shane. They're my favorite band of all time.
50:31 Reach out to Kyle if you want to send me some air up on swag. I'd be happy to take some.
50:38 I think a better way to put it was he's left out on purpose to refrain that Jesus saves.
50:44 Because that's intentional. I think like Satan knows scripture like he knows the word better
50:50 than we do probably. And I think he's intentional with that. And it's very easy for us to to fall
50:56 into that. Oh gosh, I am terrible. I am awful. I am depraved. That's something that scares me.
51:01 The fact that he knows the scripture better than me. Yeah, he's still fighting. He's not
51:08 omniscient or omnipresent or any other types of things. But dude, he's got what I someone said.
51:13 It's like, dude, he's got your game film. Like he knows everything is going to take to get you.
51:17 I mean, we were talking about screw table letters a week or two ago.
51:19 Hebrews six, six. Close. Yeah, not even. And who have fallen away to be brought back to repentance to
51:27 lose. They are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting themselves to public disgrace.
51:34 So really got to start in Hebrew six, five, which do it live. It takes a little time to get to Hebrew
51:46 six, five. That'd be us there. Okay. You man. Yeah, we got a support for it is impossible in the case
51:55 of those who have once been enlightened to have tasted the heavenly gift and have shared in the
52:01 Holy Spirit and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come.
52:06 And then have fallen away to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucified once again,
52:11 since they are crucifying once again, the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.
52:17 Is that saying the same thing? We're like God will bring home a Christian that gets too far from him.
52:25 Yeah, so for me it was a scary verse because I felt there were points in my walk with Christ
52:32 that I felt like that there was a gap there. You know, I don't know. Look at how big this section is
52:39 for four through eight. Yeah, there's a lot there and there's a whole bunch that's crazy.
52:43 Would everyone listening just please pause for a second while we're eating?
52:46 We got to sound smart. It's not going well.
52:51 This is what a real Bible study looks like. You're not the only one that's we don't know.
52:56 You got a skip button if you want it. So for me that that was why you're reading. That was the
53:01 that was one of the verses along with the other one about being careful about teachers and preachers
53:06 and that you'll be judged. That was one that just makes me make me have a little not uncertainty.
53:14 Like I said before I've gotten past that but it was one that I keep near because I actually like
53:19 the position it puts me in to the full surrendering of that the only thing I will be saying is every
53:26 time they bring up every time a judgment and accusation comes up I will just look to him and
53:33 I'll say Jesus like the man on the middle cross if it starts with but I like you're in the wrong
53:39 state of mind you're in the wrong. But he what he say. Do you want to just read that section?
53:44 Is it worth it? It's it starts again like oh boy. That's a lot. That's what took me so long.
53:50 When you're looking at a study Bible a good clue on the importance of a topic is that page
53:56 division like how little scriptural scripture to Bible commentary on this this specific section
54:02 it's like a third of the page of scripture and then the bottom two thirds is all commentary
54:06 and it's all those verses that rest is read. So you know it's important.
54:11 There's a lot of this is this is one that I don't think that you could say
54:14 well that's just what the word said because there is a lot of commentary on this.
54:19 Yes, bam, bam, bam. You saying Joey's wrong? Huh? You all ready to throw me under the bus?
54:25 What I'm saying is I don't think Joey would say that phrase about something with this verse.
54:32 There's a lot a lot to the meaning of it. There's a lot to unpack there for sure but I think you
54:37 still probably come back to it is what it says. It's probably worth the Google.
54:41 Yeah. It says what it says if you already know what it means like that's the problem.
54:45 That's the difference. You have a theology degree and so it's like yeah you've already
54:49 read all the commentary should Jack Wagon like I haven't like I don't know what it means.
54:53 Hey can anybody reference the movie reference that I just did? What?
54:56 Probably worth the Google. Now I hope I'm the first one to reference Lego Batman on this podcast
55:04 which I think is one of the most brilliantly written comedies. That is a great actually I
55:09 watched that on Russ's recommendation. Did you love it? That's one of our favorite moves.
55:14 I've probably seen that movie 20 times. That movie is incredible. Every time you watch it,
55:18 every time you listen to it, you find something new and I listen to it. I'm a huge fan of Michael
55:23 Jackson the free Willie soundtrack and there's a no it's not free Willie. It's a man in the mirror
55:28 but man in the mirror in there like I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan music music only.
55:34 Not extracurricular. Yeah. That was the movie that we had in the DVD player in the car when we first
55:39 got a video of DVD in the backseat. So I listened to that movie 20 times before I ever saw it and
55:47 I would just play it just listen to the jokes. Oh I'll just play it and just listen like whenever
55:51 I first we first played it Tiffany wasn't paying attention and I had to stop it. I was like we're
55:56 starting this up. You got to listen from the very first line where this is going. I loved it.
56:00 So good. We're going to go back. We've had we've had Lego Batman talked about in this batch.
56:05 We've had some Tropic Thunder. We've talked about scriptures that actually terrify us.
56:10 Is there anything else because we didn't even bring up any scriptures that have direct references
56:13 to hell and here's another reference. What are you most terrified of? Snake clowns.
56:19 Snake clowns. That's your reference from the movie.
56:21 So good. Remember that? I do. There we go. Well I can't think of a better place to leave it than
56:27 that. So guys no no you definitely didn't but now you got a lot of people that are at least like
56:32 Lego Batman curious. Please please go watch Lego Batman and reach your Bible.
56:37 Yeah I was gonna say forget the Bible forget digging into scriptures and you know definitely
56:41 you know send people on a wild goose chase and get them not even anywhere close to the
56:45 reference that you were making. I'm not sure what that was about. We landed the plane. Yeah
56:49 eventually we landed with Lego Batman but that's okay. So one quick question is that like that was
56:54 like a movie that was like a theaters or that's like a YouTube thing. It movie movie for sure.
56:59 It was in theaters kind of I don't know if theaters might be a broad term but it was after the actual
57:05 Lego movie they started coming out with it. Everything is awesome and the Lego Batman not to be confused
57:10 with the Lego movie Lego Batman. Lego Batman is in the Lego movie and then they're like oh let's spin
57:18 off. Well who's the guy that plays it it's the same guy from Arrested Development. It's Joe will it's
57:24 Will Arnett. Will Arnett. Yeah it's great. Shout out to Will Arnett. Well guys this has been
57:29 absolutely enthralling especially here at the very end but I guess we can leave Acts 24 there
57:34 because that's certainly where we kept our commentary was on Acts 24 but guys if you want to come back
57:39 here next week there'll be a whole new batch of people. So if you hated this one we're gonna try
57:42 our best next week. So come back here next week read through Acts 25 that is Acts 25 but again
