This is Indaunted Life, a man's podcast.
1:22
I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
1:25
Welcome back to the forging table.
1:26
The mission of Indaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:29
forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:32
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:35
by digging into God's word, and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:37
us.
1:38
That's Ryan.
1:39
That's Eric, and we've still got Jay Reisner here at the table with us, now here's the
1:41
thing, guys.
1:42
I know for those of you listening to this and Apple Podcast Land or Spotify Land or Watch
1:46
on YouTube or whatever, you didn't know this, but we just got through having a delicious
1:50
meal.
1:51
And so we've had some meat and some rice and some protein balls, and we've had some good
1:56
delicious drinks and things like that.
1:58
And so it's these last two that we always like to get after that.
2:02
We kind of like, maybe we bring things down a little bit.
2:05
The energy isn't as high as it could be or need be, and I feel like we just need to get
2:09
pumped up.
2:10
And what it makes me think of is times whenever I have seen powerlifters before they get a
2:14
big lift.
2:15
They're wearing their suit and they've got their belt on and right before they get on
2:19
the bar, they get some smelling salts and they just get a little, they just get a little
2:24
puff real quick and get some pumped up.
2:26
And I just so happened to still have the world's strongest smelling salts in my possession.
2:33
So again, for those of you that missed out on the episodes from times gone by, I think
2:38
that was with a Dagen and Ryan Horn, and I forget who else was doing that batch.
2:43
When I got these in the mail.
2:45
The bottle was sealed.
2:47
It was inside of the packaging, which was inside of the mailer.
2:50
And so I get my knife and my truck and I go to open it.
2:52
I accidentally just puncture the packaging under the mailer and it was so pungent.
2:57
I had to roll the windows down.
2:58
It was still, it was still sealed.
3:00
The bottle was still sealed, but guys for our audience and for the overall like sanctity
3:07
of the content, I think we would be remiss if we didn't just, you know, take, take a little
3:12
bit off of this just to try to get that pump, try to get a little bit, Ryan, do you have
3:16
a question?
3:17
Is it rancid smelling because it's just eight?
3:20
It's not rancid.
3:21
I know you got a sense of stomach.
3:22
I know you do.
3:23
You see this guy dread to clean a deer, it's hilarious, but no, it's not going to be like
3:26
that.
3:27
But I will tell you, I will tell you, okay, guys, just listen, just listen.
3:30
When you keep it closed until you're ready to give it a sniff, do not put it directly
3:35
under your nose.
3:36
Don't sniff it like your sniffing bath and body works lotion and keep your eyes closed
3:41
after you open it, okay?
3:42
And the only person who gets to opt out of this is one of the elders at our church.
3:45
So Jay, if you don't want to do this, I completely understand.
3:47
I'm not going to make you do it.
3:48
No, this is not a drug to any of you guys out there and none of that type of thing.
3:52
And just so you can prove that there's nothing squirrely, I'm going to, I'm going to do
3:55
it first.
3:56
I don't like knock me out.
3:57
No, no, no, it's fine.
3:58
It's fine.
3:59
It's fine.
4:00
You're not going to throw up.
4:01
You're fine.
4:02
Okay.
4:03
Here we go.
4:04
Here we go.
4:05
Eric, am I supposed to say, I mean the brand, that is the brand.
4:23
So if you're looking for it, shout out to Juji Mufu.
4:25
Okay.
4:26
Again, keep your eyes closed.
4:27
Juji Mufu.
4:28
I'm so sorry.
4:29
Just get it.
4:30
Oh my God.
4:31
All right, we're skipping over Jay, we're letting him think about it.
4:38
All right.
4:39
But just for now, I'm just just for now again.
4:42
Keep your eyes closed.
4:43
Don't don't take a super hot on my hands.
4:45
Okay.
4:46
All right.
4:47
Just do it.
4:48
Just do it.
4:49
Golly man.
4:50
You got this.
4:51
Dude, you're going to feel amazing.
4:55
Oh, that was way too much.
5:04
Why did you do it so hard?
5:07
Ryan.
5:08
Ryan.
5:09
I can't do that.
5:10
I've never done drugs, but I feel like that's what happens when you take cocaine.
5:15
Oh my gosh.
5:16
Okay.
5:17
My eyes are...
5:18
All right.
5:19
Jay.
5:20
Jay, are you going for it?
5:21
Okay.
5:22
All right.
5:23
Just remember, close your eyes.
5:24
Just close your eyes.
5:25
Okay.
5:26
Just go.
5:27
Okay.
5:28
Jay, just don't go too.
5:29
Just don't go too deep.
5:30
Not too.
5:31
Just got to make sure you get in there a little bit.
5:34
Oh, yeah.
5:35
Yeah.
5:36
That was a very prudent approach to this.
5:37
So...
5:38
Oh my gosh.
5:39
Yeah.
5:40
Zach Todd real quick.
5:41
Okay.
5:42
Got to go get something for my nose.
5:43
You got to go to the bathroom.
5:44
Okay.
5:45
Jay, let's let Ryan out real quick.
5:46
Don't worry.
5:47
We won't start getting into the great stuff without you, but I will say the first time we
5:52
did this, I literally text the guys a few hours later.
5:55
Oh, [inaudible].
5:56
And we could still...
5:57
You could still...
5:58
You're right.
5:59
We could smell it hours later because the first time I did it, I put it right under my
6:04
nose and I took a big, deep breath, kind of like I was in like nose and a whiskey or
6:08
something like that.
6:10
It was ridiculous.
6:11
Like I couldn't believe, like I literally grabbed on to whoever was to my right, I think
6:14
it was digging and I was like, I can't, I can't even concentrate, like what just happened.
6:18
I thought I had ruined myself, but then two seconds goes by and you're fine.
6:20
So how do you guys feel?
6:22
You feel like pumped up?
6:23
Rejuvenated.
6:24
I'm a lot of clarity.
6:25
A lot of clarity.
6:26
Since COVID though, like I don't smell as well.
6:30
Oh, remember you lost your smell?
6:32
Yeah.
6:33
And I lost for like totally a loss of like six months and...
6:35
What?
6:36
Yeah.
6:37
And then still don't really have nothing smells the way it used to smell.
6:40
Six months?
6:41
Yeah.
6:42
And so that was gosh now four years ago, almost, that I've kind of just completely had a different...
6:46
Oh my goodness.
6:47
I need to go into plumbing or something like that because...
6:50
Ooh, okay, see with COVID, I got the first whatever COVID that there was and so it knocked
6:55
out my sense of taste and smell.
6:57
And did it knock out your taste for six months?
6:59
No, my taste subtly came back after maybe a month, but then smell went away for six months
7:04
and then still nothing smells or tastes the same.
7:07
Yeah.
7:08
The body aches and the dry mouth and the congestion and all that.
7:11
That was bad, but it was the can't, couldn't smell thing.
7:15
It like depressed me because I was like, during that moment, I tried a whole bunch of
7:20
foods that I normally absolutely hate in the test just to make sure I didn't have smelling
7:25
and taste.
7:26
Like I literally got a salad with onions and avocado and cucumbers and all the stuff that
7:30
I just don't normally eat or don't like at all and I just ate it and it was like there
7:34
was nothing happening.
7:35
I was so depressed because I just couldn't taste anything and maybe think of when Matt
7:38
Chandler was talking about, do you think about how great taste buds are?
7:41
Like we don't need taste buds, but God gave those to us so that we could actually enjoy
7:45
meals and things like that.
7:46
Ryan, you look terrible.
7:48
What is...
7:49
Are you okay?
7:50
I don't have no fear.
7:51
Why did you go so hard?
7:52
I know.
7:53
Dude, I gave everyone fair warning.
7:54
You just go all the way down.
7:56
No, you did not.
7:57
No, you did not.
7:58
No, you didn't.
7:59
You have video evidence.
8:00
Oh, man.
8:01
Hey, no.
8:02
Actually, guys, hang on.
8:03
Hang on.
8:04
I forgot to hit record.
8:07
Just kidding.
8:08
I'm just kidding.
8:09
I'm just kidding.
8:10
Yeah.
8:11
Y'all are going to have to do it again.
8:13
Oh, heck no.
8:14
I think I did.
8:15
That joke.
8:16
The eyes are still watering.
8:17
Yeah.
8:18
They're still red.
8:19
No, I didn't.
8:20
Well, probably after I was like, "Ah, burns!"
8:22
Why would you do that to yourself?
8:25
Why would you do that to your friends?
8:27
You're not my friend.
8:28
I'm just like, I needed...
8:29
I just need that reaction.
8:30
I'm your 3 a.m.
8:31
friend, but you know this.
8:32
No, but like, I just needed to, you know, for you guys to feel that because like it's
8:34
for the content, right?
8:35
It's for the audience, right?
8:37
Don't ever do it.
8:39
Next time you need to get those inberries.
8:41
If you try that, the little, it's like a little, almost like a little pill thing, almost
8:45
like a star burst.
8:46
You know, it's different.
8:47
But anyway, you put in your mouth, you suck on it for like three or four minutes, and
8:51
then everything tastes super duper sweet.
8:53
So you like, you get something like a lemon, and you put it in your mouth.
8:58
It tastes like the sweetest lemon you've ever tasted in your mouth.
9:01
So what, like, what is it?
9:03
It's a, it basically blocks sour in my berry.
9:07
Yeah.
9:08
It blocks sour receptors.
9:09
So anything you taste, whether it's already sweet or not sweet at all, if there's any
9:14
bit of sweetness in it, it pulls out 100%.
9:17
I love sour though.
9:18
Oh, so you take a bite of steak.
9:20
You tell me the steak will taste sweet or I don't know about that.
9:23
It's like more sour stuff.
9:24
Like, yeah, yeah.
9:25
Take like your sick.
9:26
Take your fruits and your acidic things.
9:27
Would it make me actually like coffee?
9:30
If you have to put a cream in your coffee, just don't drink it.
9:33
Oh, yeah.
9:34
Amen.
9:35
Why would anyone drink it?
9:36
It smells terrible.
9:37
It tastes even worse.
9:38
Yeah.
9:39
I know.
9:40
I've smelled smelling salts now.
9:41
Yeah.
9:42
And hurts my nose.
9:43
I can't imagine.
9:44
You just ruined my palate.
9:45
Yeah. What if you got like the COVID thing like you can't smell right for like six months?
9:49
Yeah.
9:50
I saved so much money on Cologne.
9:52
Okay.
9:53
Ryan, see, I wasn't going to bring it up, but Jay.
9:55
I had to.
9:56
No.
9:57
No, you didn't have to.
9:59
I've you wanted to.
10:00
I didn't want to.
10:01
You wanted to.
10:02
It was just the perfect set.
10:03
Jay, I think it's important for pastors and elders at our church to know exactly what type
10:06
of sinful behavior they're dealing with in their congregants.
10:09
And so one day we don't have to get into the details, but I'm taking a shower at Ryan's
10:12
house and I am looking for Q tips.
10:14
I'm not being nosy, right?
10:16
No pun intended with the smelling salts.
10:17
I'm literally looking for Q tips so that I can have hypo or out, you know, do the right
10:22
thing.
10:23
I almost said hypo out of Jen Geers.
10:24
That doesn't make any sense at all.
10:25
But so that I could, you know, take care of my ears and all the type of thing.
10:27
And I opened up a cabinet door and literally it was like I opened up the door to Narnia
10:31
and if Narnia were only a Cologne shop and there were like 40 or 50 bottles, 50 does
10:38
know, does a bottle of cologne and I can't pronounce the names.
10:44
I've never seen in these.
10:45
One of them's got like a, like a hound dog, like top to it and all that.
10:48
That's the pen haligan.
10:49
And then, okay.
10:50
Yeah.
10:51
What does that mean?
10:52
This is like something from Harry Potter.
10:54
I've never even like read the books.
10:55
I don't even know if that makes sense.
10:57
But I like, and then I'm like, okay, I make the mistake of asking him, what do these things
11:02
cost?
11:03
And I asked him on the forging table because I thought he was going to say, okay, yeah,
11:07
you're right.
11:08
You're right.
11:09
Adam said that because I'm thinking like expensive cologne, like $60, $70 a bottle.
11:13
And these bottles were like, I'm not saying it, $300, $400, $500 bottles of cologne.
11:22
Do they have bits of panther in them?
11:24
Like, I don't know.
11:26
Maybe.
11:27
Is it about the bottles?
11:28
Is it just about owning them?
11:30
Is it the smell?
11:31
The smells.
11:32
It's the smell.
11:33
So I have a smell.
11:34
Man, this is going to make me look bad again.
11:35
Sorry, Joby.
11:36
I've already been there.
11:38
I have a smell for like each season.
11:41
Wow.
11:42
So you have four colognes.
11:44
I have no.
11:45
So if there's four seasons, it could be about eight.
11:48
Oh, but sometimes I have like, right now, Oklahoma's in Falls, fall.
11:52
If you have one in Falls, we're not like when we get into fall, I'll probably wear more
11:56
of my vanilla.
11:57
Well, by the time people.
11:58
So by the time people hear this, you know, the leaves will started to fall like all that.
12:02
So, so let me just set the scene.
12:04
No, wait, wait, wait.
12:05
Let me just set the scene.
12:06
So you wake up.
12:07
Set the scene.
12:08
It's a 45 degree morning.
12:09
There's a little bit of dew on the grass.
12:10
It's a little bit foggy.
12:12
When you're just getting ready for the day and you've got your pumpkin spice latte and
12:15
your cinnamon sticks that you sniff as you do all that type of thing and you look out
12:20
and maybe there's a deer off in the distance.
12:22
You're on the back porch.
12:23
You've got your scarf on.
12:24
All that's great.
12:25
But now you got to get ready for the day.
12:26
You got to go out.
12:27
You got to, you know, make some sales.
12:28
You got to kill something so your family can eat.
12:30
What are we spritzing ourselves with, man?
12:32
It's that, it's that fall day.
12:33
So I've got two that I'm going to sprints myself for that one.
12:36
If it depends on where I'm going that day and what I'm wearing, but if it's like, I'm
12:40
wearing something really nice.
12:41
Let's say you got a casual meeting and then you got a meeting where, no, we're suit and
12:45
tie.
12:46
We got to do the damn thing.
12:47
So if it's suit and tie, I'm wearing creed ood, of course.
12:50
Yeah, of course.
12:51
That makes perfect sense.
12:52
If it's like a business meeting, I'll probably put on creed Viking.
12:56
But if it's, if it's, it's called Viking.
13:00
And if it's just like me rolling around the house that day, I'll probably wear a spice
13:03
bomb.
13:04
No, no, no.
13:05
Wait, wait.
13:06
You wear cologne at home when no one's around you.
13:08
No, I mean, I mean, if I'm like going to the store or something like that, I'm not.
13:11
That's how what you said.
13:12
You said, just roll around the house.
13:14
Oh, I'm sorry.
13:16
If I'm just doing stuff that's like domesticated stuff and I'm at home or I know I'm going
13:22
to go to the store or I have people coming over like Kyle's going to come over.
13:26
I'm going to cook for him so he can make fun of me and my cologne.
13:29
I probably wear a spice bomb and then who'll be like, Hey, what's up?
13:31
How much is that one?
13:32
I'll be like 60 bucks.
13:33
No, I think we need to go back just for you.
13:36
One of the categories of cologne is when you're at home and you're not leaving because that's
13:41
how this all started is that if I'm just kicking it around the house, we're wearing
13:46
you're wearing cologne when no one else is around.
13:49
Is that true?
13:50
No, you're going back on your previous statement in front of an elder from my church.
13:54
No, I meant to say like if I'm just doing like regular house for like I'm going to the
13:58
store or like I'm not going to anything special.
14:00
Okay.
14:01
All right.
14:02
Like you're coming over.
14:03
That's not special.
14:04
I don't think that rudely but now I'm just I have I have a cologne issue and I respect
14:09
it so much.
14:10
Thank you.
14:11
Do you?
14:12
Oh, yeah.
14:13
I mean, some guys collect, you know, bourbon, some guys collect cigars.
14:15
I collect that guy.
14:16
I mean, you collect cologne.
14:17
I collect.
14:18
Hey, cologne.
14:19
What's your thing?
14:20
Bourbon.
14:21
And like what's the other thing?
14:22
I collect records.
14:23
Oh, I didn't have vinyls and vinyls.
14:24
Yeah.
14:25
I got vinyl records.
14:26
I collect Bibles.
14:27
I have like all different types of Bibles.
14:28
What's your oldest Bible that you had?
14:30
So I have a Bible that my mom and dad gave me back in 2003 and was actually on the day
14:36
my son was born in 2003, they gave me this new living translation Bible and they go back
14:40
and I look at it and says February 19th, 2003 and what's kind of crazy is like 12 years
14:46
later, my son's born on that day.
14:47
2013?
14:48
Oh, wait, wait, they gave it to you in 2003.
14:51
They gave it to me in 2003.
14:52
Oh, I'll get it.
14:53
I get it 12 years later.
14:54
He was born in 2015.
14:55
That's cool.
14:56
That's like, I mean, I got a teen study Bible from back in the day, but I mean, I don't
15:00
have any like old, old Bibles.
15:02
Like I found somebody's like old Bible and hold on to it.
15:05
There's like they have different translations.
15:07
There's a guy in a last name's Talies, a family marriage counselor and he showed me
15:12
a Bible that he has hundreds of years old and has blood on it.
15:17
Oh, wow.
15:18
Assumed to be had been owned by someone that was martyred for the faith.
15:23
Wow.
15:24
Yeah.
15:25
Dude.
15:26
I was hoping to get like Andy Stanley's Bible because I heard it only has a New Testament.
15:33
And part and it's got scissor marks where he's cut out the parts of the New Testament.
15:37
He's unhinged it from the rest of the Bible.
15:39
And so that's right.
15:40
That makes it.
15:41
Sorry.
15:42
Let's go back to the vinyl thing.
15:43
Yeah.
15:44
So do you actually listen to vinyl records or you just collect them?
15:45
Yeah.
15:46
No, I listen to them.
15:47
I love vinyl.
15:48
I'm a big fan of the killers.
15:49
I got a lot of killers on vinyl.
15:50
I've got a I got Johnny Cash full some blues on vinyl.
15:53
My wife got me Frank Sinatra, like an old old vinyl record of Frank Sinatra that I listen
15:58
to that one.
15:59
It's the good life.
16:00
And I like to get like that, like, Depeche Mode, we were talking about Depeche Mode.
16:04
I think Eric's ringtone sounds like Depeche Mode.
16:06
What's that?
16:07
The only one I included on the Depeche Mode conversation was like, I was like, great
16:11
pull.
16:12
I started ringing.
16:13
I was like, dude, is that Depeche Mode?
16:15
He just starts laughing.
16:17
I was like, I literally thought it was like, like I got Depeche Mode over.
16:20
I made that on garage band on my phone.
16:22
You did you, bro?
16:25
Maybe I was influenced by them.
16:26
I don't know.
16:27
So like, I had enjoyed the silence for my wife and she's like, why do you have that
16:31
on there?
16:32
And I was like, to be grateful, just kidding, I didn't do that.
16:38
It would have been fun.
16:39
No, I do have a question because I've never owned a record player.
16:41
I've never owned a record.
16:43
Does it sound different?
16:45
Like some people are like super big audio files and so they'll get like fancy studio
16:49
headphones and then they'll get like a vinyl and then they'll plug in.
16:52
And they're like, no, it just sounds so much better.
16:54
I can be more in tune with the music.
16:55
I've just never experienced it.
16:56
I mean, I like when I hear it go on and I hear like, and then it starts playing.
17:03
I'm not much of an audio file to be like, to give you, to give you that, you know, I
17:07
probably know more about Cologne than I do that.
17:10
So actually, I know more about bourbon than I do Cologne.
17:12
So because this is cool.
17:13
Well, I know more about scotch and that's not because of you.
17:17
That's because the D Wayne, D Wayne, poor shout out.
17:20
Okay.
17:21
Do you think in 20 years, there'll be all these nostalgic people that use dial up internet?
17:27
It's just 50, 60, just to hear the noise.
17:31
They're going to chat with their friends.
17:33
I want to wait 20 minutes to get online and then get booted off.
17:38
Yeah.
17:39
Just for the pure.
17:40
It's just the better way.
17:41
No, I mean, I like my wife bought it for me for Christmas.
17:44
She was like, not like you already have a bourbon issue, like let's go ahead and like
17:48
add something more expensive, like vinyl.
17:50
So but, you know what, I was like, I leaned into it and kind of enjoy it.
17:54
But you're right.
17:55
It's kind of whatever you're into.
17:56
And as long as it doesn't become an idol and whatever.
17:58
But then other people we talked a couple of weeks ago, I think about when you lavish gifts
18:03
on pastors and things like that.
18:04
So one of the greatest gifts I ever got for appearing, I went and did this speaking engagement
18:09
out in New Mexico and the Staggs, so shout out to Carl Staggs, Staggs, they got me a bottle
18:16
of Papi 20 year old as a thank you for coming to chama New Mexico because I mean, they don't
18:22
get a lot of people that come through there and you know, they were just very, very thankful
18:24
that it came down.
18:25
And I mean, I knew the guy for a grand total of about three minutes before, you know, I'm
18:29
helping do a deal so he can, you know, buy a bottle of Papi 20 for himself and a bottle
18:32
of Papi 20 for me because I just casually mentioned that the best bourbon I've ever had
18:37
by a mile is Papi 20 year old.
18:39
So 23 is still really, really good.
18:41
It's a little bit over oaked, but I'd still drink it, but the 20 year old is absolutely
18:44
fantastic.
18:45
So we're all into what we're into.
18:46
And so I appreciate you elucidating a little bit further.
18:49
Your unhealthy obsession with cologne that absolutely helps out.
18:52
But guys, it will be able to smell it for a while now.
18:54
Hey, I forgot to ask, what are you wearing now?
18:57
Since you're sitting I'm wearing, I'm wearing creed.
19:00
Which one?
19:01
Creed Viking?
19:02
Is this business or is this kind of this was, he doesn't have a bow tie on.
19:05
So I don't think it's creed Viking.
19:07
It's creed.
19:08
Do you have a schedule?
19:09
No, I don't have a schedule.
19:10
Okay.
19:11
I didn't know.
19:12
I didn't know.
19:13
I can see the bottle, but I can't.
19:14
As you look, does your wife like cologne?
19:16
My wife actually freaking it like she likes to spice bomb like the cheap stuff.
19:20
Okay.
19:21
So like she doesn't get.
19:22
She wants you to wear a curve and all that English letter.
19:25
Yeah.
19:26
Yeah.
19:27
Like she's doing a curve.
19:28
That one's funny.
19:29
I've been wearing that in years.
19:30
Oh, sorry.
19:31
I didn't mean to mention some of that.
19:32
So below your standards.
19:33
Why you trying to check yourself before you wreck yourself.
19:35
You just tell us which creed it is so that I'm trying to find it.
19:39
Ryan, my son is into cologne these days and he is a hundred percent not going to hang
19:43
out with me.
19:44
He needs a mentor.
19:45
No.
19:46
He also needs a mentor.
19:47
I will.
19:48
I will.
19:49
I will.
19:50
While you're looking it up, I do want to give a quick shout out to Crossway and to Logos.
19:51
Logos Bible software.
19:52
Browning's got up on his computer right now is absolutely incredible.
19:55
And you know, as I'm going through acts, I'm using the stock commentary that is on the
19:58
Logos Bible software.
19:59
If I run into a phrase or a word that I'm a little confused by, I can look at other word
20:03
studies and commentaries, it is the best Bible software on the planet earth, but don't
20:07
use it at full price.
20:08
Use it as a discount.
20:09
Go to the show notes where you can check out that link.
20:10
And then also we have partnered with a great publisher across way to do a forging table
20:15

20:35

20:37
It's right there.
20:38
You can check it out.
20:39
And you are currently wearing creed.
20:40
I'm still looking, man.
20:41
Dude, how about that setup?
20:43
It was like the longest road to get to the same place.
20:45
For some reason you're in and it doesn't move.
20:47
Oh, yeah.
20:48
Let's blame my internet.
20:49
It's 56.
20:50
Yeah.
20:51
Yeah, there's the 56 K.
20:52
Yeah.
20:53
You know, I put you on 56 K.
20:54
I'm going to have it here in like two seconds.
20:55
Here we go.
20:56
Original Santal.
20:57
It's creed.
20:58
Yeah, that's the one I'm wearing right now.
21:00
I knew it was something with an S, but there was something in front of it.
21:03
Well, I can't smell it either because I'm still honestly, it's not my favorite.
21:06
I just wear it just because I was like, I don't smell nice and I don't wear it.
21:09
You're just you're just with your okay friends.
21:10
Yeah.
21:11
I was like, it's just jay.
21:12
It's not Mark.
21:13
Well, you just guarantee.
21:15
I take that as a compliment.
21:16
You just guarantee that Mark's not going to come on with you in the room when Mark comes
21:20
on.
21:21
Don't.
21:22
Don't.
21:23
Mark.
21:24
Don't.
21:25
I want to wear the good stuff.
21:26
And that's only between the four of us.
21:27
I'm going to wear the ood, man.
21:28
Is that the good thing?
21:29
That dude, I'm going to do.
21:30
He's going to be like, you smell tobacco-y and vanilla-y like I just want to keep coming
21:34
back to the forging.
21:35
That might be offensive to us.
21:36
This guy.
21:37
Is that like the upper echelon?
21:38
Like I got to impress us.
21:39
That's probably my most expensive.
21:40
It's ood.
21:41
Ood is that or the pin how you do the ood?
21:44
The ood when I bought it was on sale.
21:46
So I got it for like three seventy five.
21:47
It goes for five fifty.
21:48
My.
21:49
Goes for five fifty.
21:50
What do you mean?
21:51
It goes for five fifty.
21:52
It's appreciating in value.
21:53
Yeah.
21:54
Appreciate some value.
21:55
Okay.
21:56
So it does get better with age.
21:57
So 50 years from now is that is it going to smoke?
21:59
If I were to have like if I were to have a creed ood and I hold on to it for like I mean
22:04
I bought that one like maybe three years ago at like three, four hundred bucks.
22:08
Like yeah, that thing is going to go like the thing will go for five fifty now.
22:12
That's like the contents of the bottle don't change.
22:14
I don't think so.
22:15
No.
22:16
Okay.
22:17
Because that's how I think it will grind changes.
22:18
But yeah, it's not going to get better.
22:19
The smell is going to get better.
22:20
The smell will still be there.
22:21
But like yeah, I mean like you could make money off Colone if you but I wear it because
22:26
I enjoy it just like we drink it.
22:27
I think you should sling it.
22:28
I think you should become that guy where the people are meeting meeting up with you and
22:31
like back alleys and pop in the trunk.
22:33
It's like bro, I got two.
22:34
My son would sell it.
22:35
Trying to get his Viking.
22:37
Yeah.
22:38
Dude Viking is legit.
22:39
That's my daughter's favorite.
22:40
She loves that one.
22:41
How much is that one?
22:42
That one's like that was probably about three fifty.
22:44
Oh yeah.
22:45
That's more reasonable.
22:46
Yeah.
22:47
Definitely more reasonable.
22:48
It's probably four fifty now.
22:49
I think it's so embarrassed that he he agreed to come here.
22:50
He's embarrassed that he allowed to become a member of the church now he's like he was
22:58
the guy that stood in the way.
22:59
You were the baby keeper.
23:00
He could have been like you know what?
23:01
Church members should call out for you.
23:02
Yeah.
23:03
I can get it on the perfume spot for one fifty four.
23:04
You want me to perfume spot?
23:05
Is it real?
23:06
Is it legit?
23:07
I don't know.
23:08
People sell fake Colone.
23:09
Yeah, they do.
23:10
Those are fake.
23:11
Okay.
23:12
If you get ALT like ALT is like an alternative version of those so they try to mess with
23:15
the smells so you can get it like that smell for a very cheap price.
23:19
Is it ALT?
23:20
I feel a need to ask that we can get to the end of this conversation.
23:23
Is the one you just looked up ALT or is it the real thing?
23:25
Is it the real McCoy is three point three ounces?
23:28
I don't even know if that's a lot but is that a lot or is that normal is that a travel
23:32
pack?
23:33
Three ounces is usually says one hundred percent authentic yeah and it says it on the internet
23:37
which is true.
23:38
It's got to be true.
23:39
There's no way they're selling it for a hundred and fifty four dollars.
23:41
That's a waste of money.
23:42
I wouldn't buy it.
23:43
Maybe that's your profit on the fun Mar to buy all your Colones and dillards by dillards.
23:49
He's just declared it a waste of money and a waste of time that you're even on this website.
23:54
I smell good.
23:55
It's not a waste of money.
23:57
Are you sure though because I never have you ever complained about the way I smell?
24:02
I never even noticed that you smelled anything different than neutral.
24:05
You have two broken noses anyways like I have a single nose we need to broken nostrils like
24:11
you need smelling salt just to be able to smell your own dude.
24:14
You guys at some point it would probably be appropriate if we got into Acts 19 so we're
24:20
going to give it to the most serious person at the table Jay.
24:23
Please save us from all this rap scallions behavior.
24:26
We're going to get into Acts 19.
24:27
Let's go versus one through ten.
24:30
Henceforth I'm hugging you every time I see you.
24:32
Excellent.
24:33
Alright.
24:34
Inspired of the Holy Spirit.
24:35
Luke writes these words.
24:36
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth Paul passed through the upper country and
24:40
came to Ephesus and found some disciples.
24:42
They said to them did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed and they said to
24:46
him no we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit and he said into what then
24:52
were you baptized and they said into John's baptism.
24:55
Paul said John was baptized with a baptism of repentance telling the people to believe
24:59
in him who was coming after him that is in Jesus.
25:03
When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and when Paul had
25:06
laid his hands upon them the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues
25:10
and prophesying they were all they were in all about twelve men and he entered the synagogue
25:16
and continued speaking out boldly for three months reasoning and persuading them about
25:20
the kingdom of God.
25:22
But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient speaking evil of the way before
25:26
the people he withdrew from them and took away the disciples reasoning daily in the school
25:30
of Tyrannus this took place for two years so that all who lived in Asia heard the word
25:34
of the Lord both Jews and Greeks.
25:41
I don't know which section got you the most fired up but you can have the first word on
25:44
this chapter after we spent twenty four minutes talking about nothing.
25:48
I enjoyed our past twenty four minutes no it's just a it's going to continue to develop
25:53
in kind of just a wild way and I think as you transition out of this chapter into chapter
26:00
twenty and beyond you have a lot more attention given to just the experience of Paul almost
26:07
in Paul's experience in isolation so not so much church planting and establishing and
26:11
pioneering work going on as much as is just Paul's you know different trials and imprisonments
26:16
and shipwrecks and so on and so forth so in nineteen as you move through it you almost
26:21
have a condensed whole book of acts everything that's going on in the book of acts since
26:27
Pentecost sort of shows up in chapter nineteen not as necessarily an intentional summary
26:33
of the previous eighteen chapters but it is sort of a capstone of the previous eighteen
26:39
chapters in that the Holy Spirit is front and center signs and wonders a front and center
26:44
the preaching of the Gospels front and center just a fascinating start to really a fascinating
26:50
chapter one Ryan I think this tees up what I think we were talking about last week where
26:54
we were talking about they were baptized by John the baptized are those types of things
26:59
and so that they hadn't quite received the Holy Spirit so I do want to open up that conversation
27:04
but also I do have a question because I asked someone this the other day and they didn't
27:08
really give me a great answer and I didn't have a great answer either but you know Jim
27:12
any cricket let your conscience be your guide that type of thing and so before we receive
27:17
the Holy Spirit before we were given the Holy Spirit as a gift what is that guiding us
27:23
before then because I asked this guy I was like is that our conscience is there is there
27:27
something in the ethereal to our conscience or is that like Holy Spirit light that's you
27:34
know like pre Holy Spirit like all right man like let's definitely not do this because
27:40
someone be like no I had I had the Holy Spirit before I was a Christian which is not a biblical
27:44
concept because we're told that we get it there and so like I just want to open that up to
27:49
you guys because I was kind of confused as to like when I was a kid before I was a Christian
27:52
and my gut told me to do something right like what was that do we have any I I've got it
28:00
I've got to believe that some of that and and I'm just I'll just go say what I say in
28:04
the dot dot dot whatever but I think some of that's got to be nurture like if I'm brought
28:10
up in a home and they teach me right and wrong and some of that's got to be somewhere in
28:14
me from just being taught by parents that no good right and wrong so I think some of that
28:20
guides that I mean we know that the truth is in us all God puts it there we decided to
28:28
deny it or accept it right so there's that I don't know that is our Jimmy cricket whatever
28:36
you said you know that conscious it's your conscience for your guide yeah is that's that
28:41
just something we made up kind of as a I mean I don't I don't know there's a whole thing
28:46
underlying that story like Jimmy cricket JC Jesus Christ like there there's people that
28:51
have made the core Larry's to this is a not so subtle reference to the Holy Spirit that's
28:57
guiding the character in that story via Jimmy cricket like so again this could all just be
29:02
kind of hearsay or happens dance yeah so if we're fully depraved and we're running away
29:06
from God then is it possible that we still do good things because the truth is in us but
29:13
we just don't reach you know we don't naturally come to Jesus and on our own accord and yet
29:18
we we kind of just have this innate sense of what's good and what's bad I think it kind
29:22
of goes back to Paul and Romans Romans one you know like we all we all know that there's
29:27
a God and there's no excuse behind that but I think we're all built with we're all made
29:31
in his image and his you know it's God's not God's not a human being gonna have hands
29:36
and feet but we are made in his image in that we have his characteristics in some ways and
29:42
so I think that's what comes down to like you know moral law like we know what morality
29:45
is morality is built in to our hearts no matter what because we're gonna feel that you know
29:51
and so I think that it really just comes down to is that you know we have common grace so
29:57
why don't we have common morality because a lot of you know laws are built on Judeo-Christian
30:01
values but they're used in other countries that still do not believe in Christ so I think
30:06
we're kind of built with that I could be wrong on that that's just my thought I pretty much
30:10
agree with you I mean the law of God's written in our hearts taking Romans one is a reference
30:15
but the fallen man suppresses the truth of God in his ungodliness suppresses the truth
30:20
of God exchanges for a lie and that's where the poverty shows up is we run head along
30:25
the other direction even though we are made in this image and we understand we have a judge
30:31
we have higher power we have the law of God and and whether it's conscience or what you
30:37
call it moral I common morality more common morality I think yeah common grace is definitely
30:41
involved in keeping us from destroying ourselves yeah so and so and then you know so like that's
30:46
why an atheist he has to play both sides of the coin so to speak you can't you may say
30:51
call himself an atheist but then half his actions are gonna tend to suggest that he's going
30:56
by something you know the excess because if he was truly an atheist and there is no God
31:00
then there's literally no reason he should do anything good period well an atheist has
31:04
have just as much faith to believe what they believe anyway one where where do you have
31:09
your standard for where good comes from and so that's the other thing to where it's like
31:12
oh I just try to lead a good life I was like well what does good mean how do we know the
31:14
difference between good and evil like by what standard are you appealing to but also at
31:19
the beginning of this we see that Paul has come upon these disciples of John the Baptist
31:24
and we see Paul question their faith overall because he didn't see their fruit maybe he
31:30
knew just by the words they were saying that their their theology was wrong and it just
31:36
kind of reminded me that we shouldn't be afraid to question people because erica goes back
31:40
to something that we were talking about weeks ago where it was you know we we didn't see
31:45
we don't know what they think and so we have to ask questions right so we have to have
31:49
some sort of a thing that we can appeal to are we using the same language are we talking
31:53
about the same God Jay whenever you're talking about that's like hey tell me about the God
31:56
you're talking about because I may not believe in that God either I feel like that's happening
32:00
here at the beginning but again I think a lot of us modern in modern Christianity we're
32:04
we're worshiping at the altar of winsomeness and we don't want to ever be seen as coming
32:08
off as divisive and so we seem afraid to question people when it's like look dude I'm not seeing
32:13
any fruit in your life of repentance or Christianity in general could it even have just been hey
32:18
you know we we ran into this with the Paulos we basically flip flop time now we're he was
32:23
and he's where I was and so was it just kind of this coming in and being like hey we had
32:29
talked about Paulos back you know months ago whatever but so and then just kind of getting
32:33
clarification like are you guys still following this teaching of the came out of John the Baptist
32:39
versus I think you bring up a great point there what was the teaching of John the Baptist
32:43
repent and believe in God is near right right so what if these guys are going out there and
32:48
preaching repentance that the kingdom of God God is near but the kingdom of God was near
32:54
or here yeah because of Christ now Christ is still here and now you know like this is this is what
32:59
it is this is why why we do what we do and so this is what Christ fulfilled and so maybe that's a
33:04
way of him knowing like hey you guys are preaching repentance but why are you repenting and what's
33:07
your belief in now well I'm believing that the kingdom of God is is near well the kingdom of God
33:12
was here yeah and he still is and this is how he is is through the Holy Spirit right and another
33:16
thing here when we get into verse eight you know he entered the synagogue and for three months
33:20
spoke boldly reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God I've heard some there's some
33:25
corners of Christianity that are really not big on Christian apologists especially if Christian
33:30
apologists are making arguments that don't reside directly within scripture they're appealing to
33:36
reason different things like that but you know first like this you know reasoning and persuading
33:40
them how are they persuading them is not persuading them just by reading scripture back to them you
33:44
know it's it's using the things that we've talked about even think about Tim Keller I know he said
33:48
some things culturally towards the end of his life that I certainly would not cosign but his book
33:52
the reason for God is an incredible book for an atheist to read that maybe is unchurched as well
33:59
because there are very few scriptural references in that book he is appealing to reason to get
34:04
people to consider faith in a God people be like what he doesn't present the gospel it's like that's
34:09
not the point of that book this is like pre-gospel for for a lot of people because again he was in a
34:13
very secular area of New York City and he was just trying to reason with these people that like
34:18
they're so far from Jesus just getting them to believe in any type of a God of any kind a creator
34:23
God of the universe was kind of like their first step towards bringing them in on an overion you
34:27
probably have a problem with it so go ahead and tell me your problem with that approach I don't
34:31
have a problem with the approach it's just how are you are you giving the full gospel because
34:36
like I remember watching a documentary on Hillsong and what was the pastor's carolence carolence and
34:42
he started that that church in New York City and they they created it like a nightclub like are you
34:47
going there you're like waiting in line there's like you know red velvet ropes and these people
34:52
are coming in there they're becoming a part of this community and they're they're worshiping but
34:58
like none of them are changing their lives they were just looking for acceptance like if you look
35:02
all the people that we're going to talk about Hillsong and the church hurt they're outside of
35:07
the realm of what Christ would have called them to as repentance well let's actually talk about
35:11
something that you and I've talked about before that I think goes in line here that he gets us
35:15
campaign and so like the well I think it's a we can bring it up in a fair way and just kind of talk
35:21
about it as we see from from this part of scripture so you know with the the reason for God Tim Keller
35:26
would not be the person that say here's this book it's a full-throated explanation of the gospel of
35:30
Jesus Christ this is like nope this is trying to help people that are complete atheists or like
35:36
ardent agnostics which is kind of even you know an interesting thing to say and to get them to
35:41
even believe in some sort of a God the thing that you and I both equally had problems with it with
35:46
the he gets this campaign even if you take away some of their critical theory and oppressor
35:51
oppressed narrative that comes through in a lot of the advertisements yeah ethnic narcissism or
35:56
standpoint epistemology or something like that when you go to the website right so at the end of
36:01
this commercial where they show oppressor oppressed narratives through the entire thing and they're
36:05
like oh that's not even for you can Christian conservatives it's for everybody else don't even
36:09
worry about it then you go to the website and there's no gospel anywhere on the website and then you
36:16
and I both went through their process to try to find a church in our area so you have to do these
36:20
like three different you know video meetings where you watch these other videos and all types of
36:24
things and you're thinking at some point someone's got to talk about the gospel Jesus Christ and it
36:30
never happens and I've even talked to people that run churches that have supposedly met with the
36:35
he gets this campaign people and they're like don't worry if anyone in your area goes through our
36:39
process on our website we're going to lead them to your church only for me to say hey I do business
36:44
in this area sometimes can you suggest some churches to me and then they don't suggest the
36:48
church that I know gives a full throw to gospel presentation every single week that's the problem
36:53
it's not the initial commercial even though I have problems with the initial commercial it's that
36:56
you never the train never stops at a station called the gospel it goes back to Martill and you look
37:01
at you look at Paul trying to reach the Greeks on their level in Athens and but he still preaches
37:07
who God is and that God is going to be the judge or and he's he asked for repentance and if you go
37:13
to the he gets us campaign website or whatever and you go to about us there I think the thing
37:19
that stuck out for me the most was like people who are fans of Jesus and people who believe in Jesus
37:24
so you're going to be learning about Jesus from people who are fans who are not believers in Jesus
37:29
so they never really discuss the full gospel we want to I want to step further and went through
37:33
the reading plan and you don't even get a full-throated gospel message until like week six seven or eight
37:39
somewhere between there and that was just like going on the Bible app through the he gets us like
37:44
campaign on the Bible app so and how many layers down and I just kind of have issue with that like
37:50
I have an issue like the full gospel like you want to come and build a commercial like that that's
37:54
fine you know like you're trying to you're trying to make a point but when you're making that point
37:58
and they're coming back to it you're not even giving them the full gospel message and so that's
38:02
where I just kind of get a little hung up on that like I love Tim Keller Tim Keller I read a bunch
38:08
of books by Keller love Keller God rest his soul I know he's in heaven great marriage book yeah
38:13
shout out love Keller but like yeah some of the things he said I know he was his heart was really
38:17
big on the city and and reaching the people of the city and I get that but we've got to be able to be
38:24
to be able to cause division you know we got to be able to come out and say hey this isn't right we
38:31
need to call out repentance sometimes well Jay I'm curious Jay how that works itself out for faith
38:36
Bible because obviously you've got three huge fans of faith Bible Church here and you're an elder
38:40
there like how how would you look at handling something like that so if if you are ministering
38:46
as a church you know as a capital C church to an individual person that has no real understanding
38:53
of a Judeo-Christian ethic they don't have any understanding of kind of like the Trinity or how
38:59
like a creator God maybe they had a very very secular liberal upbringing something like that
39:03
like how do you approach that type of conversation because some people would say you just preach the
39:09
gospel you point them to the word and let the Holy Spirit do their thing or do you take a different
39:13
approach and I'm not saying one's better than the other I'm just wondering how does faith Bible
39:16
approach something like that just gleaning from act 17 and Paul's sermon at Mars Hill I think
39:23
we've always I don't even say the word aired but we've always tended toward a high view of God so
39:30
a God-centered view of God a high view of God a high view of God's sovereignty you start there
39:35
um you if you start in a man-centered approach like here's how this addresses your felt needs and
39:43
then you try to end up in a place that delivers a high view of God and his sovereignty and his
39:49
might and his majesty and all these different things that we know to be true about him that
39:53
feels a little bit bait and switchy yeah and hey not what I signed up for I like this when it made
39:58
me feel good about myself um so we start with a high view of God and I think confront people
40:05
in a in a winsome but anchored way with where Scripture starts so the the old Christian Smith
40:14
phrase moralistic therapeutic deism is where most churches are starting it's where a lot of gospel
40:20
presentations try to start but I think when you start there your high view of God high view of his
40:30
justice high view of the atonement all of that stuff begins to break down because you didn't you
40:36
didn't start in the right place so if we can start in the right place we're in good shape you started
40:39
with like God loves me and he needs me more than I need him and that's like because that's how I
40:44
kind of started and I was like you know like is that from the charismatic not really cares the
40:49
charismatic background was more legalism no the moralistic background that the church that we
40:53
attended here before we moved to Texas was very much like I mean their whole tagline is God is
40:57
for you and so are we and I'm like that's nice you know what I'm saying and that sounds pretty
41:02
winsome um but it's just like no man we need to be for God like if God's forming he loves me so
41:08
much and you're telling me he he his son died on the cross for my sins and why did he have to
41:13
die on the cross for my sins I'm such a good person like he loves me like why would he even do that
41:17
you know and so it's just like I I didn't even understand the gospel till I was like 33 years old
41:21
when Eric said when that taught me moralistic therapeutic deism and kind of like the context
41:26
where that can be be a little bit dangerous if you're especially if you're approaching a gospel
41:30
related conversation oh yeah I mean you're putting feelings before faith you know that's part of the
41:34
problem on that but I agree with you starting on the right the right foot with those folks otherwise
41:40
it ends up being a consumer kind of gospel where it's like what can I get out of this and then
41:44
I have to give me think back it you know I feel like conversion and discipleship are kind of like
41:49
hand-in-hand like you you can't have one without the other and unfortunately I think so many of our
41:55
churches or or what not are just trying to get people to come down and say I prayed the prayer
42:00
I'm good to go and I probably shared this before but it's like my my grandparents come to see us
42:06
out in North Carolina years ago we asked them how their journey was well I was great we did this
42:10
and this this and we went to Dollywood and my grandmother just elbows my grandfather's like
42:15
we didn't go to Dollywood we literally sat in the parking lot took a picture of the front of Dollywood
42:21
and got the sign and then we left and you know sometimes I feel like that's literally what we're
42:25
trying to do is just get people to say the prayer and then there's no expectation beyond that you
42:30
know it's like the sower of the seed like the parable of the sower it's like hey we can go and
42:35
spread this seed as much as we want you know but how how's that seed being cultivated how are we
42:41
are we doing it like my favorite quote by Spurgeon is we're not responsible for the souls that are
42:45
saved but we are responsible for the gospel that we preach and the way that we preach it and it's
42:49
just like we've got to preach the gospel the right way we've got to sow the seed the right way so
42:53
it can be cultivated the way it needs to be cultivated well yeah and I remember the first time I read
42:58
a church's annual report and in the annual report they had the number of salvations for the year
43:05
and this was this was really before I was kind of digging into the Bible I didn't even know really
43:08
about Calvinist theology and about election like as in depth or I had to reckon with that as much
43:13
as I did now but I remember looking at that kind of a scan being like how really like that is that
43:20
how many people that you know how many souls have been saved because of this ministry or is that how
43:24
many hands were raised but then I remember asking Jobe about this I was like you know how do you
43:29
count because they count you know that they'll count at their churches and all that and they have
43:32
a count they talk about in their staff meetings and they talk about it in terms of their impact
43:36
for the year and I like I just like very fervently and honestly ask them like hey like what does that
43:40
mean he goes look we can't be judging jury in terms of someone's someone's someone's salvation
43:46
so we're going to count it if someone makes it moves towards Christ so when we they do something
43:50
called beach baptism because there are churches there in Jacksonville and they do they do baptism
43:55
as as a most the most awesome way I've ever seen it it is a party on the beach and they got people
44:01
coming out into the surf and they're you know people are getting baptized and every one of the
44:05
beach goes absolutely insane I think their last beach baptism they had over a thousand people
44:09
that went out and got baptized and then you'll have maybe Theo bro types that's that's not a that's
44:13
not a dig but you'll have something that's like more like a Theo bro type like a you know they've
44:17
never seen a ministry that does it right even john McArthur's ministry for some reason and they're
44:21
just going to look at that and they're going to be like yeah but are those people really saved
44:25
some engine yeah jobe's response would be like all I know is when we ask them you know if you know
44:31
do they repent and believe and put faith in in Christ for the propitiation of their sin debt
44:36
they said affirmative they said yes they gave a thumbs up even if they couldn't say words
44:41
and we you know baptized him in the name of the father son and the holy spirit and we went on from
44:45
there but that seed was planted they planted the seed and like what I really enjoy about jobe's
44:49
church where I really love about it he's like a multi-site church but he's like a unicorn we're
44:54
discipleship is of we're disciples is it's crazy like somebody who comes to Christ and jobe's church
45:01
is going to be discipled they're not just somebody who raised a hand is a number
45:04
they are now a member of that church and they're going to be discipled if they choose to keep going
45:08
and be discipled well you say unicorn that's part of the thing that I've been very adamant
45:12
with with jobe and his staff I'm like guys jobe martin should be a household name because he's
45:18
running a big multi-site church that hockey sticks during covid and he's on on any given weekend
45:25
I'll say this and I'll keep saying it on any given weekend he is the best preacher in america
45:29
and so it's like how do I keep getting these videos popping up on my feed from
45:33
Annie Stanley or steven furtick or you know uh jolo steen or any of these other types of people
45:38
like why is any more of a household name but that's just kind of his all chucksy approach to ministry
45:43
to begin with because he's like look my job is to shepherd my sheep I get in a deer blind on
45:48
monday morning and I got to prep the sermon for that thursday and I just go god they're your sheep
45:53
I'm you've made me their shepherd what would you like to say to their sheep and he's not trying to
45:58
write books so that he can go speak at the conferences he's trying to write books to move his sheep
46:03
along the journey of sanctification a little bit further and so it's like that's how do we bottle
46:09
that up and move that along how do we bottle up what's going on at faith bible to where it's like
46:13
we have such a high view of scripture that we are going to take our time and we are going to
46:17
eat our way across these pages so that you can set your theological roots even deeper a couple
46:22
weeks ago you complained about collosians and that took us like how long I didn't complain I just
46:26
said it took us six yeah we're in exodus right now we'll be in there for a year by the way how long
46:32
are we going to be in exodus because we're moving in a snail's pace at the moment christmas is coming
46:35
up too he'll do like 10 commandments all at once I'm preaching a couple weeks I do a couple or
46:42
parts of two chapters so we'll be there through the spring I think yeah all right well Eric
46:46
keeps wanting to say something I've been trying sorry not a big deal but like I just remember like
46:50
George Whitfield I mean times that he come across the pond to come preach to settlers and what not
46:55
and back in the 1700s and I know that he would people would say you know his voice was so loud
47:02
he could preach to 25,000 people you know just an open air but he was asked one time how many people
47:08
came to faith tonight or today with your preaching he said I don't know we'll come back around about
47:14
eight months from now and see you know it was a point being like how many of these people are
47:17
it's going to stick with you know so I don't know we could talk about like Charles Finney and
47:23
big chimp revivals and all that sort of thing but and I think that's interesting like if you do
47:28
have a 150 or 200 conversions or they wrote their name on a card that said they made that that
47:34
decision like when it comes to discipleship and I'm just huge on that like when it comes down to
47:40
that are we is there an expectation that we're setting for these new believers like I don't treat
47:45
my you know I love my kids but as when they became a believer I said okay I've taught you from the
47:52
Bible all these years but now the expectation is that we're stepping into this you now are a
47:57
believer so you're stepping into this a little bit more seriously and so I want you then to
48:03
to follow more closely the things that you've been taught because that's the expectation now
48:08
and we we definitely got to get back to the text but I do I do want to ask this point because you
48:13
brought up big tent revivals and I just had a chat with a guy recently that you know I'm not
48:19
you know okay I'll just describe it generically so that we don't get any details but he just kind
48:25
of casually made a comment he's like oh and I know that my daughter saved but then he goes on to
48:29
describe she's homosexual she's in a homosexual relationship or she's just divorced from a homosexual
48:35
relationship she thinks the Bible isn't the word of God she doesn't go to church blah blah all these
48:40
different things and in this context I'm like this is a guy's daughter and I need to be careful how I
48:46
tread because I don't want to be you know meddling in someone's family but I do need to press a little
48:50
bit here kind of like how we see Paul do at the beginning of Acts 19 and I just say hey you just
48:55
kind of casually mentioned that your your daughter is a Christian like so so how do you know that
49:00
like what what makes you think that she was a Christian oh well there was a revival years back
49:04
when she was younger and you know she raised her hand went down I got baptized and blah blah
49:07
and I go okay and I use a tactic I forget who who did it first but I was like if there was a neutral
49:13
observer that was a going around and watching your daughter and collecting evidence to build a case
49:18
to try to convict her of being a Christian would they have enough evidence to convict her in court
49:23
and he just kind of froze and he's like no I don't guess they would and so that's a question of fruit
49:30
as I've talked about before no one is less sure of their salvation than somebody who listens to
49:34
John MacArthur preach about assurance of salvation because no one's fruit is sweet enough no one
49:38
could possibly be jumping over the hurdles that John MacArthur is laying out there for everybody
49:42
but in this moment I was like is it possible that your daughter got swept up in the emotion of the
49:49
revival in the music in the the the whatever the preacher was doing is yeah like is it possible
49:57
they got whipped up and their hands shot up and they just went ahead and got baptized down by the
50:02
river and we're doing it all their friends were doing it that's kind of the church camp phenomenon
50:05
and things like that literally the opposite of the emotionalism approach I feel like it's faith
50:10
Bible and so it's because like never once every now and then they'll hit a hymn during the uh
50:15
during the worship and I'm like oh that's amazing and but like Mark's never going to get you to the
50:19
point of emotionalism he's about his stoic middle of the road calm presenter of the gospel message
50:25
that that I've ever seen you're very similar guest preachers that come in there there's no
50:29
hellfire and brimstone type thing it's the opposite of emotionalism and so like I guess J.M.
50:35
curious from your perspective like some people would say there's value in the emotionalism like
50:40
God gave us music so we're going to use music you know God gave us the piano and so we're going to
50:44
start playing it when I start doing my prayer at the end but then people's again it kind of
50:48
works up their emotions but does the Holy Spirit need that I guess well I think you know the answer
50:52
to that question I do that's why I'm asking you so you have to say it no I mean people can easily
50:57
be manipulated I'm a guy that did youth ministry for 10 or 11 years I know how that could look um
51:02
and you know we get a lot of comments sometimes people are like how come there's not an altar
51:06
call right they have a different church background so they're like you know they're used to the the
51:09
appeal at the end of the service to come forward and I love the old Spurgeon story uh the the
51:15
guy who followed Spurgeon Metropolitan Tabernacle was an altar call guy and so he would do an altar
51:23
call at the end of every sermon and one of the deacons who was there during Spurgeon's time
51:27
called him on it kind of questioned him on it why you know why do you do this altar call at the end
51:33
of every message and the guy said well if the spirits at work and someone's hard I want to give
51:37
them the opportunity to to answer his call well Spurgeon didn't do an altar call but he did invite
51:43
people on Monday to come to the office for counsel and to essentially follow up on whatever it is
51:49
that was moving in their heart and during the service and so as the deacon and this new pastor
51:54
are are having this exchange in the pastors like yeah I want people in the moment to be able to
51:59
respond to the gospel if the Holy Spirit's at work in their heart I want them to to respond and the
52:03
deacons response was well in Spurgeon's day if the Holy Spirit was at work in their heart it was still
52:08
at work on Monday morning yeah yeah and so they're like an impulse by kind of like I don't let my
52:13
kids impulse by yeah I'll be like give it three days and let's see so there's an efficacy of the
52:18
Holy Spirit that we can have confidence in that if he's going to start the work he's going to finish
52:22
the work and I and I've noticed you guys you do this and mark does it too during during your sermons
52:27
is like you'll present the gospel where the gospel shows up within the scripture and it sometimes
52:32
it's in the beginning sometimes it's in the middle right most times it's not at the end and you'll
52:36
like a planned crescendo it's not a planned crescendo but every time you guys do and especially mark
52:42
he'll be like you know after the service if this is laid on your heart come up and talk to us I'll
52:46
be down front well and you know and the nice thing is awesome yeah I like that with each of our
52:51
children that got baptized and we still have one to go there's the meeting with a pastor and you
52:56
sit down and you work through kind of talk through understanding of salvation right I think I really
53:01
appreciate that so it's not just some yeah we'll just baptize you this weekend well that's that's
53:05
always been a thing and then I got to get back to driving this train because we are about an hour
53:09
in and we are not even close to being done with acts 19 but the the interesting thing about that
53:14
as well if I've as I've expressed to this table and as we've all talked about I always have a little
53:18
bit of consternation about little kids like being saved I'm like they don't know what any of these
53:23
words mean like how could they possibly be saved but then I was explained I think maybe you may have
53:27
explained it like when when before will got baptized and so how old was a woman he got baptized was he
53:32
nine how old how old could he get baptized it eight the youngest eight okay so it was his eighth
53:37
birthday he got baptized and so guys eighth birthday you kind of explained to me how the church very
53:41
soberly but very diligently kind of goes through and you know you asked ask the questions that should
53:47
elicit the answers that point to a true you know repentance because that's in my head I was like
53:52
what does an eight-year-old have to repent of other than being eight like you know they can't trust a
53:56
fart at that age but like we're gonna tell them that they can like trust with their like salvation
54:00
and all those different things and so that was maybe a little bit too far but that's okay we're
54:03
gonna leave it in we're gonna leave it in but browning we need to talk about the sons of skiva so if
54:08
you can hit 11 through 20 gosh we are so far into this episode and we have so much good stuff left
54:13
we're just gonna it's just gonna be long it's just gonna be a little longer let's go good and God was
54:17
doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that touch
54:22
his skin were carried away to the sick and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out
54:28
of them then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcist undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus
54:34
over those who had evil spirits saying I adure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims seven sons of a
54:42
Jewish high priest named skiva were doing this but the evil spirit answered them Jesus I know
54:48
and Paul I recognize but who are you and the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on him
54:55
mastered all of them and overpowered them so that they fled out of the house naked and wounded
54:59
and this became known to all the residents of Ephesus both Jews and Greeks and fear fell upon
55:06
them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled also many of those who were now believers came
55:14
confessing and divulging their practices and a number of those who had practiced magic
55:20
arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all then they counted the value
55:24
of them and found it came to 50,000 pieces of silver so the word of the Lord continued to increase
55:31
in prevail mightily I mean I've been in some fights before but I've never fled a house naked
55:35
and wounded and so yeah it looks like these guys were absolutely up against it and again I know
55:39
we have to be a little bit brief in our commentary through the rest here that's just the way the
55:43
cookie crumbled with this one but the important thing about this section is like what an absolute
55:47
burn here Jesus I know Paul I recognize but who are you who are you exactly and these guys are out
55:54
there like apparently doing this work but it did bring up a question that I jotted down here so
55:58
are we to look at this section of scripture as like look only some people are going to be equipped
56:05
to deal with the spiritual realm the dark the dark spirits those types of things or do we
56:10
all have that capability because I remember whenever I was trying to get my pornography and
56:14
masturbation habit under control you know 14 years ago when I first started down this journey I had
56:18
someone give me a book that basically was like look man you have all that it was a very charismatic
56:23
book I got downstairs I forget the name of it but it's like man you have all the power you can do
56:27
anything in Jesus' name you can fight in the spiritual realm you are equipped to do everything
56:31
you're just as equipped as anybody else blah blah blah but then I read this section of scripture
56:35
and it's just kind of like but are we all equipped in the same way like who exactly is equipped to
56:41
do that I don't believe that we just have to go to a Catholic priest if we feel like somebody's
56:45
under like demonic oppression or something like that but that's just something that came up with me
56:50
for this section I mean I look at these guys were they even believers in Christ or were they just
56:55
using his name just to be able to do their job seems like more the latter yeah and so that's why
57:00
I'm thinking like that's why we don't know you you know because we don't even see Jesus in you
57:05
you know like we do see in Paul and so basically they was just like you're you delve into witchcraft
57:09
you're you're no different than us and so he attacked them he had no fear of them because the
57:13
Lord wasn't with them yeah did you just solidify that entire section I did let's go Ryan Horne we
57:21
started with clone and we made it all the way here but guys we need to get into the right now no
57:26
one can smell yet at the moment because we did the smelling something yeah I know dude smelling
57:29
salts feel like it happened hours ago I don't know if that's like a problem I freaked out yeah well
57:34
we can put it again we can hit it again at the end of the note you're okay I'll take a jocko go
57:38
okay fair enough fair enough all right now we need to get into the the riot F assistant so
57:42
we're gonna do versus 21 through 27 so Jay how about you hit 21 through or Ryan no Jay no actually
57:51
I take it back Ryan if you can hit the riot at F says Lisa's first part 21 through 27 it's not that
57:56
many 27 okay now after these events Paul resolved in the spirit to pass through Macedonia and
58:03
acacia okay yeah okay yeah let's close there's no see and go to Jerusalem saying after I've been
58:09
there I must also see Rome and having sent into and having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers
58:15
Timothy and Arastis he himself stayed in Asia for a while about that time there arose a little
58:22
disturbance concerning the way for a man named Demetrius a silversmith who made silver shrines
58:29
of Artemis of Artemis brought no little business brought no little business to the craftsmen
58:35
these he gathered together with the work with the workmen in similar trades and said men
58:40
you know that from
58:42
this business we have our wealth and you see and hear that not only an ethicist but in almost all
58:52
of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people saying that God's
58:58
that God's made with it with hands are not gods and there is a danger not only that this trade
59:04
of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be
59:11
counted as nothing and that she may even be to pose from her magnificent her magnificence and she
59:18
and she whom all Asia and all the world worship so I thought Scott had a great commentary here
59:23
he said thus vested interests were disguised as local patriotism in this case also under the cloak
59:29
of religious zeal and so they're they're trying to say this is a religious issue but the disturbance
59:34
is not uh this is a stat as well the disturbance was not doctrinal in nature and it certainly was
59:40
an ethical in nature it was all economic but they're cloaking it they're cloaking their rage in some
59:46
form of like virtue signaling version of Christianity and so it's like do we have any modern examples
59:51
of that that anybody would like to share well I mean previously the Jews did the same thing they
59:56
tried to cloak their rage behind treason oh they're they're killing to roam yeah appealing to roam
1:00:02
that there's another king beside Caesar so yeah this is this is the same song but just a different
1:00:07
audience delivering it well Jay how about you keep us going through the end of the chapter here and
1:00:10
then we'll wrap up acts 19 so go ahead and read 28 through the end which is 41 when they heard
1:00:15
this and were filled with rage they began crying out saying great is Artemis of the Ephesians the
1:00:20
city was filled with confusion and they rushed with one accord into the theater dragging along
1:00:25
Gaius and Aristarchus Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia and when Paul wanted to go into
1:00:30
the assembly the disciples would not let him also some of the Asyarks who were friends of of his
1:00:35
sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater so then some were shouting one
1:00:40
thing and some another for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what
1:00:44
reason they had come together some of the crowd concluded it was Alexander since the Jews had put
1:00:49
him forward and having mentioned with his hand Alexander was intending to make a defense to the
1:00:53
assembly when they recognized that he was a Jew a single outcry arose from them all as they
1:00:59
from them all as they shouted for about two hours great is Artemis of the Ephesians
1:01:04
after quieting the crowd the town clerk said men of Ephesus what man is there after all who does
1:01:09
not know that the city of Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image
1:01:14
which fell down from heaven so since these are undeniable facts you ought to keep calm and to do
1:01:19
nothing rash for you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers
1:01:24
blasphemers of our goddess so then the Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint
1:01:28
against any man the courts are in session and pro councils are available let them bring charges
1:01:33
against one another but if you want anything beyond this it should be settled in the lawful
1:01:38
assembly for indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events
1:01:43
since there's no real cause for it and in this connection we'll be unable to account for this
1:01:47
disorderly gathering after saying this he dismissed the assembly so I definitely don't know how many
1:01:52
times you guys have done this during your job where something you said or did caused a riot but that
1:01:57
certainly happened here the thing that was overwhelming to me about this section is the calm voice of
1:02:02
reason coming from the town clerk whose name we don't even get this guy's like all right he didn't
1:02:07
try to match the level of crazy he didn't try to shout over the level of crazy he went the opposite
1:02:12
direction I've talked about that before sometimes when I've gotten into you know kinetic argument
1:02:17
situations with people I tend to go the opposite way to where it's like they get louder and I get
1:02:21
quieter and it's like hey I'm going to drag you towards the center here because this is getting a
1:02:25
little bit ridiculous because we're not going to having [inaudible] contests to see who can be louder
1:02:29
and so sometimes a calm voice of reason really helps in a situation like this as well but other
1:02:33
stuff in terms of the the riot that was caused here in Ephesus I like the fact that Paul wanted
1:02:38
to go out there and do something like these like those are my boys I need to go and everybody's like
1:02:42
holding them back you know and so I thought I thought that was pretty cool well and the calm
1:02:47
force of reason here is self-preserving yeah he doesn't want Rome we don't want Rome to show up
1:02:52
we don't want to get regulated we don't you know want any kind of hand of authority that's beyond
1:02:56
ourselves to come along so hey it's in our best interest for everybody to settle down and the
1:03:01
clerk kind of reminded me of I can't remember it was one of the yeah Sadducees back in Acts when they
1:03:08
were talking about about Christianity and he said hey if if this rings true then it's going to you
1:03:18
know it's gonna it's gonna expand but if like other people like other religions and these other
1:03:23
guys that came out he said if it doesn't they're gonna disperse like these others and that's basically
1:03:27
what this clerk said he's like everybody knows Artemis's power nobody's going to come out
1:03:31
against Artemis but like he used his own zeal and you know nobody nobody worshiped Artemis anymore
1:03:38
so yeah I was trying to find that because I remember that that was early that was early in Acts I
1:03:43
should have went and wrote it down but as it was so eloquently read by Pastor J it kind of hit a
1:03:49
nerve and maybe remember okay very good we'll find it we'll we'll maybe mention it on next week's
1:03:53
show but guys anything else on Acts 19 before we wrap up it is a small miracle that we made it to
1:03:59
this moment but just throwing it out there's anybody need anymore smelling salt you're not supposed
1:04:02
to do it once a day it does say that on the bottle with an exclamation point so I think they mean it
1:04:06
or it's a polite suggestion at least no no no I'm still feeling it right here three no's okay I guess
1:04:10
we'll just go ahead move on but guys we're gonna leave the Acts 19 there but come back here next week
1:04:14
