This is Undaunted Life a Man's Podcast.
0:54
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:56
Let's get into it.
0:57
Welcome back to the forging table.
0:58
The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping men to push back darkness with content that
1:01
forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:04
At the forging table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:07
by digging into God's word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey
1:10
with us.
1:11
That's Adam.
1:12
That's Russell.
1:13
That's Derek.
1:14
Like how I went out of order here.
1:15
Here's the thing guys.
1:16
As I told you off here, I've been very excited for what we're about to do because I always
1:19
like to do a little bit of a cold open like hey, let's find a soft place to land even though
1:22
we do have a lot to get into today when we're going to be talking about Axe 13.
1:27
We do these in batches.
1:29
We film a bunch of these in batches like anyone who watches this on YouTube like yes, we don't
1:33
wear the same shirt for weeks in a row like we do these in batches.
1:37
When you do the first one, you need something to like really get you going.
1:40
You need something to like super focus your energy and there's a lot of ways you can do
1:44
that.
1:45
Like some people do yoga.
1:46
They hook their ponytail to a tree and then they really get after and that's how they
1:50
focus.
1:51
Other people that will like do this thing, like I've seen this in baseball will you'll
1:54
have a guy that will hold his thumb out like when he's on the on deck circle and he'll
1:57
look at the center field number like you know, four, four, 15 or something, then look at
2:02
his thumb for 15 and look at his thumb just so he can like get his long focus and short
2:06
focus.
2:07
And I mean, you guys have your stuff that you do, but I saw something and I wanted to try
2:11
it for a very, very, very long time.
2:14
And it's something that power lifters do right before they do like a really big lift.
2:19
So we're doing smelling salt.
2:22
We're doing selling salt.
2:23
Okay.
2:24
Here's the thing just so y'all can see in YouTube land.
2:27
So these are the strongest smelling salts.
2:30
These are from Juji Mufu.
2:32
Here's the problem.
2:33
So I get these about a month ago and I'm in the truck and I'm out of, I'm out of red
2:37
light.
2:38
And so I just pull my knife out.
2:39
I was just going to cut it.
2:40
Well, not only did I cut the bag that it was shipped in, I cut the bag that the salts
2:44
were in, the salts are still sealed and it still hit me so hard that I had to like roll
2:51
the windows down and like to clear out the truck and the thing is still sealed.
2:55
I've never opened it, but I accidentally punctured the bag.
2:58
So for any of you guys out there that think we're, you know, about to get high for the
3:01
first time on on Don life and man's podcast, that's not what they do, but there's apparently
3:04
something in the formula of smelling salts that does something to your central nervous
3:09
system.
3:10
And so what these power lifters will do if you haven't seen it is, you know, right before
3:13
they're about to do like a 400 kilogram deadlift or something like that.
3:17
They'll do, you know, sniff of the smell insults or whatever.
3:20
And then they'll go right to the bar and lift it and it like does something to like increase
3:23
your strength.
3:24
So guys, do we need like a trash can other different flavors, but we're not eating it.
3:29
We're not.
3:30
I've never done this.
3:31
Okay.
3:32
So all right.
3:33
Let's.
3:34
Okay.
3:35
So this is called because that's basically what happens in literally it says right here,
3:41
do not sniff, we're 100% going to be doing that.
3:44
And that's where I accidentally punctured the bag.
3:46
And I don't know if y'all can kind of whiff.
3:49
What does it say?
3:50
Do not sniff?
3:51
Well, I don't know.
3:52
Like we don't need to really read the instructions, we don't do not do not stick under other
3:56
people's noses, noses, but you can stick it under your own nose, right?
3:59
Lightly waft, 12 inches from nose and keep eyes closed during use, do not use more than
4:05
a few times a day.
4:06
All right.
4:07
Well, we'll do the eye thing.
4:08
Let's all make sure our eyes are closed.
4:09
But the wafting thing, like that's not going to happen, we're just going to stick our noses
4:12
in it because it didn't say you couldn't stick your own nose under it, right?
4:15
Okay.
4:16
You have immediately before intense exertion immediately closed, which is what we're doing,
4:20
which is exactly what we're doing.
4:21
Okay.
4:22
Warning.
4:23
Contents under pressure.
4:24
This looks like a like a military warning.
4:25
You can see like an airplane.
4:27
Contents under pressure open slowly, carefully away from body and face.
4:30
Oh, I'm ready.
4:31
Okay.
4:32
Well, Adam, you get to go first because you're the one that's always like the morning of the
4:35
forging table like, what are we doing today? All right, I just want to see like, I don't
4:39
know if there's a, there's a, oh, I feel like a bombs about to go off.
4:44
Okay.
4:45
Yeah, there's a seal.
4:46
There's a little seal.
4:47
I'll hold my breath.
4:48
Oh, no.
4:49
Got him on the table.
4:50
Okay.
4:51
Shoot.
4:52
Oh, wait.
4:53
Oh, it's on my hands.
4:54
Oh, it's all messed up.
4:55
Shoot.
4:56
No, it's not messed up.
4:57
Okay.
4:58
Oh, I caught.
4:59
Oh, you're already small.
5:00
Oh, okay.
5:01
All right.
5:02
Oh.
5:03
Oh, I thought it was going to be like in like little things you have to break open.
5:07
No, no, a giant bottle of gel.
5:10
Okay.
5:11
Adam first.
5:12
Oh, no.
5:13
Oh, oh, oh my goodness gracious tell it, tell the audience how you feel.
5:20
Oh, I just got a second.
5:22
Oh, that second one was worse than the first one.
5:25
Oh, man, just the bag.
5:26
Just the bag.
5:27
Just the bag.
5:28
I would close your eyes.
5:29
I would close your eyes.
5:30
Okay.
5:31
Derek, Derek, the pilot.
5:32
I would call you to like, you know, not fail a drug test or something.
5:36
We'll find out.
5:37
Oh, all right.
5:38
Here we go.
5:39
Remember, close your eyes.
5:40
Oh, oh, no.
5:41
Oh, no.
5:42
Oh, no.
5:43
This is one of those one times where you definitely need to see us on YouTube.
5:47
You know those, you know, those chlorine tabs, those chlorine tabs, like for a pool.
5:50
Yeah.
5:51
Imagine that.
5:52
Time's at that.
5:53
Oh, man.
5:54
Did you already go?
5:55
Okay.
5:56
I didn't.
5:57
All right.
5:58
Here we go.
5:59
I feel like you just exercised a little bit of a demon.
6:08
Okay.
6:09
How'd it go?
6:10
You okay?
6:11
You feel like it reaches up and like something climbs in.
6:15
Oh, it's still hanging in there.
6:18
All right.
6:19
Man.
6:20
Okay.
6:21
Here we go.
6:22
All right, guys.
6:23
For the sake of the gospel.
6:24
So many get a barf bag.
6:31
Yeah.
6:32
Every time.
6:33
I'll be way too hard.
6:34
Keeps it.
6:35
Oh, put that in your drink.
6:39
I went way, way, way too hard.
6:43
You put it right one inch from your nose.
6:45
Was that not what you're supposed to do?
6:47
Let's read in the morning.
6:49
No.
6:50
Okay.
6:51
Wow.
6:52
All right.
6:53
I got to go put this outside.
6:54
Right now.
6:55
Derek, you're a pilot.
6:56
Tell everyone how to land a plane in the dark real quick.
6:59
I'll be right back.
7:01
This guy is his idea.
7:04
Land a plane in the dark.
7:05
Hopefully you have lights.
7:06
Or if you don't have lights, hopefully you have NBG's or something, but.
7:10
Can you land a plane a hundred percent by instruments?
7:13
Like it's raining, lightning's going.
7:16
You can't see a dang thing and you got, you got no fuel left.
7:20
You got one approach.
7:21
You got to land instruments only.
7:23
Some airplanes are rated to do that.
7:26
Yeah.
7:27
Like a lot of airliners and they have to be at a certain airport that can handle that,
7:30
but most GPS approaches will take you on the center line of the runway all the way to
7:38
the runway, but you're not rated for that 200 feet, usually about the lowest you can
7:44
go without visually seeing the runway.
7:47
Have you seen a Cirrus Vision jet?
7:49
They're pretty sweet.
7:50
You can push a button and it will land 100 percent on its own.
7:55
Have you seen that?
7:56
I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard.
7:57
It might take your job.
7:58
No.
7:59
You're violating him right now.
8:00
Yeah.
8:01
And so A.I. is also going to keep people from doing their taxes.
8:02
That's going to take your job as well.
8:03
I was researching yesterday.
8:04
Nice.
8:05
Guys, worst case scenario just happened.
8:06
I only hit one of the intro recording buttons.
8:10
I didn't hit the second one.
8:11
So we're all going to have to do the salts again.
8:14
Just kidding.
8:15
We have been recording this whole time.
8:17
There's a zero percent chance.
8:18
I think I'm ever going to do that again.
8:20
If that's what it means to be weak, if it's between that and that, I think I hit it way
8:23
too hard.
8:24
Like you actually did it like a responsible adult.
8:27
You kind of held it about like six inches below your nose.
8:29
Well, you didn't smell anything.
8:30
And then I got closer and then bam.
8:31
Yeah.
8:32
It was like it jumped out.
8:33
I thought people were faking when they would do it like whenever they did it like the Joe
8:36
Rogan experience or something like that.
8:38
Yeah.
8:39
That's okay.
8:40
Yeah.
8:41
We're not doing that again.
8:42
I'll go to jokes.
8:43
Yeah.
8:44
Yeah.
8:45
Hey, I will just tell you from here on out.
8:46
I don't have any other ones for our batches today.
8:47
I don't have anything like that.
8:48
That's maybe a one and done for what we're going to be doing here.
8:51
But we are going to be digging into Acts 13 today.
8:53
There's quite a bit in Acts 13 for us to get to because this is the first missionary journey
8:57
that we see here.
8:58
I did want to point something out here from the beginning, a couple of shout outs.
9:02
So shout out to Crossway because I know I've talked about Crossway a whole lot on the show.
9:06
I've talked about their journals.
9:08
So if any of you guys, a lot of you guys have bought these journals.
9:12
So there's like the whole Old Testament, a whole New Testament set.
9:15
And so you've got the.
9:16
Yeah.
9:17
So Derek's got his right there.
9:18
He's got the text there on the left and then you've got the journal pages on the right.
9:20
And so for me, I can't write in a Bible.
9:22
It's like I couldn't write in a textbook.
9:23
It's just something about it.
9:24
It's just, it just bothers me.
9:25
And so I got these, but my only complaint was is that they never really sat flat.
9:29
And so I would always have to like tuck it literally up under the edge of the laptop.
9:33
You know, you may notice this as you're watching the forging table or something like that.
9:36
And so I literally sent a picture of that to a couple of my contacts at Crossway that
9:41
I have a good relationship with because they just released the exact same set, but spiral
9:45
bound.
9:46
It can literally sit flat.
9:48
And so they literally just sent me this entire set so that we can kind of keep the momentum
9:52
going with all this.
9:53
So guys, I'm telling you, I don't, I won't remember to put it in the show notes, but
9:56
just search Crossway Bible journal, spiral bound.
10:00
And you'll be able to find them like these are absolutely incredible.
10:02
Like this really has revolutionized how, how I've been able to study the Bible because
10:06
I don't feel like, again, if I mess something up, I can just cross through it.
10:10
So big deal.
10:11
You can always buy these.
10:12
You don't just have to buy the set.
10:13
You can buy the individuals as well.
10:14
And then another thing I wanted to do a shout out with, so Russell, you and I were kind
10:17
of talking before this about kind of how we read the Bible.
10:20
And anytime it's someone's first time on the forging table, it's always the same questions.
10:24
You know, how did you become Christian?
10:25
How do you like to study the Bible and how does your mind work?
10:27
But this batch of forging table episodes was the first time that I really used the log
10:33
offs software because I've messed around with the log off software, but it's a little intimidating
10:38
to me.
10:39
I'm not really, you know, the most tech, you know, advanced person there is.
10:42
But this is the first time where I had the text up on the left and I had my journal right
10:46
here in front of me and I just sat there or stood at my computer and then I had the log
10:49
offs and then I was able to bring up different commentaries.
10:52
I discovered the John Stott commentary.
10:54
So John Stott, the author of the cross of Christ and I just really, really loved it.
10:59
And so we've been partnered with Logos for a long time and it's to y'all's benefit as
11:04
well.
11:05
There is a link in the show notes where you can try the Logos Bible software at a discount.
11:08
They have a bunch of different methods for how you can do that.
11:11
And I would always encourage you like I did to you, Russ, like make sure that you take
11:15
a little class where you kind of get an idea of like, okay, this is how I like to study
11:19
the Bible.
11:20
So how can we use the log off software to go into that?
11:23
So who smelling salts, I think are officially out of my system.
11:26
Let's get into the first missionary journey, Derek, just because I know you hate reading
11:29
out loud, I'm going to make you do it a bunch today.
11:31
So you're going to get the first three verses of Acts 13.
11:34
Let's hit it.
11:35
First three, I'll start off by saying sorry, Joe, because I don't know how to pronounce
11:38
any of these awards.
11:39
Oh, I totally forgot about this one.
11:41
So do your best.
11:42
All right.
11:43
All right.
11:44
Now they're in the church at Antioch, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon, who was called
11:49
Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaean, a lifelong friend of Herod, the Tetrak, and Saul.
11:56
While they were worshiping the Lord in fasting, the Holy Spirit said, set apart for me, Barnabas
12:01
and Saul, for the work to which I have called them.
12:04
Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
12:09
So right here in the beginning, I mean, there's a whole lot in Acts 13 to get to, but nearly
12:11
they talk about fasting, praying, laying of hands, different things like that.
12:15
But what we're really going to be seeing here when we get into any of these missionary
12:19
journeys is we should expect attacks whenever we're, our job is spreading the gospel.
12:26
Like we should expect spiritual attacks, physical attacks.
12:28
And so that's certainly what we're going to be seeing as we go here through this batch
12:32
of scriptures.
12:33
The one thing I did want to mention here on those first three verses and then we can either
12:37
move forward or if y'all had something, is Antioch was kind of the first church that sent
12:41
out missionaries.
12:42
And so a lot of churches were kind of just handling and helping their local communities,
12:47
which is part of the point.
12:48
But this was kind of the first ones that like got people and like, no, no, no, we're going
12:51
to get you ready.
12:52
We're going to equip you.
12:53
And then we're going to send you out.
12:54
Anything else on these first three verses before we get into the meat of this first missionary
12:58
journey?
12:59
Yeah, hit it.
13:00
The only thing I wrote down was if I was sitting there and I was a part of this and
13:02
then the Holy Spirit says, set apart Barnabas and Saul, I would have a hard time not feeling
13:06
jealous.
13:07
Why not me?
13:08
Yeah.
13:09
What's so great about them?
13:10
Why do they get to go?
13:11
And but how do they respond, fasted, prayed, laid their hands on them and sent them on their
13:15
way?
13:16
Yeah.
13:17
I think if, well, I'll speak for me because I kind of have a little bit of a jealousy
13:20
streak and I, you know, because I'm so competitive and then, you know, I just, oh, that person
13:23
got what I want.
13:24
Like that type of thing.
13:26
But when you're, well, I'll speak for myself, y'all can speak for yourselves.
13:29
When you're really in line with the scripture and you're, you know, seeking Jesus and the
13:35
Holy Spirit is moving you in your life.
13:37
When someone else gets something, like it's helpful for you to be like, Oh, that's, that
13:41
was, they're not running the same race as me.
13:43
They got something good for their race.
13:45
Like, you know, I'm guaranteed to get good stuff from my race.
13:47
Like God's going to take care of me.
13:49
Like I'm, I'm pumped for that person.
13:51
That helps me.
13:52
But when I'm not in the word, not doing all that and something else goes, happens for somebody
13:54
else.
13:55
It's like, I'd be kind of cool if that person died.
13:56
And so like that's just kind of where my mind goes.
13:58
I mean, is that the same way for you guys?
14:00
Or if you gave them like two pounds of smelling salt and they had to stay under their nose
14:05
for like 20 minutes.
14:06
That's the thing is that was like four ounces of smelling salts too.
14:09
And like, I didn't even want to look in there, but it was almost like a little juicy a little
14:12
bit.
14:13
Like, can you imagine somebody is spreading that out over like their top of their steak,
14:16
you know, finish it off a little bit.
14:18
Don't worry.
14:19
That's not an idea.
14:20
It's not an idea for the future.
14:21
Anything else?
14:22
First three versus before we move on.
14:23
I just wrote down.
14:24
I thought it was interested in that this hair it apparently is related to Herod Agrippa,
14:27
who was the king of Judea.
14:30
So not to be confused because I always see the same names and I'm like, oh, it's got
14:33
to be same guy.
14:34
It's got to be same guy.
14:35
This doesn't make any sense, but it was not the same guy.
14:37
This guy was apparently around the Galilee area.
14:40
Yeah.
14:41
I mean, we see in this section, I mean, we see different hareids.
14:44
We see different Judas.
14:45
We see different marks and johns and like all kinds of different people.
14:48
And so it's like, all right, and I know you Jews weren't real big on a bunch of different
14:51
names, but come on.
14:52
Like, help us out a little bit.
14:53
They didn't help us out.
14:54
The Romans did a great job with that.
14:55
All right.
14:56
Let's go ahead and get into verses four through 12.
14:58
Okay.
14:59
Let me try to get this set up.
15:01
All right.
15:02
So being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went to Silesia and from there they sell to
15:07
Cyprus when they arrived at Salamis that proclaimed the word of God and proclaimed the word of
15:13
God and the synagogue is of the Jews and they had John to assist them.
15:17
And then when they when they had gone through the whole island as far as pathos, they came
15:22
upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bargeesus.
15:27
He was with the pro console, Sirgius Paulus, a man of intelligence who summoned Barnabas
15:33
and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.
15:36
But Elomist, the magician for that is the meaning of his name, was opposed to them seeking
15:41
to turn the pro council away from their faith.
15:43
But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently out and
15:48
said, you son of the devil.
15:50
You enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making
15:55
crooked the straight path of the Lord?
15:57
And now behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see
16:02
the sun for a time, immediately missed and darkness fell upon him and he went about seeking
16:07
people to lead him by the hand.
16:10
Then page turner, the pro council believed when he saw what had occurred for he was astonished
16:17
at the teaching of the Lord.
16:19
I mean, I was astonished at how much there is just in this section, and there's still
16:22
a whole lot to get to in Acts 13.
16:24
But this is the first time that we see Saul refer to as Paul, or Paul refer to as Paul.
16:29
So Paul was essentially his Roman name, and since his ministry was taking place in the
16:33
Greco-Roman world, it would make sense that he would just go by Paul at this time.
16:37
And so I guess the first thing that I wouldn't want to talk about here, or the thing that
16:40
really struck me is, you know, you have this magician, which don't think like magician
16:44
like David Copperfield or David Blaine, like this was a sorcerer, this was like an occult
16:48
leader.
16:49
This was like a satanic person, you know, using spirits and things like that.
16:53
So this was not like, you know, someone pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
16:56
But they made sure to point out that Sergio's Paulus was a man of intelligence because you
17:01
will hear atheists, especially they will argue that, oh, you know, religion is just, you know,
17:05
it's for simple minded people to have something to make them feel better, you know, as they
17:10
work their way through life and make them feel good as they're dying and that type of
17:13
a thing.
17:14
And they don't really think it think of it as a intelligent thinking man's religion.
17:18
If you've done any study in the apologetics world, which I know a lot of us have, you
17:21
realize that, you know, it's not your intelligence that that saves you necessarily.
17:26
But when you're told that you're going to have to give an apology, an apology, you know, an
17:30
explanation for the reason for your faith, that a lot of this does have to do with, with
17:34
thinking things.
17:35
And we see in a very intelligent man as, you know, described in scripture, come to faith
17:40
in Christ.
17:41
And so I thought that was an interesting thing from the beginning.
17:43
What about you guys?
17:44
I like to see parts where they're, it's obvious that the lion of Judah is present.
17:51
What does Paul do when he sees that this magician is doing these ridiculous things?
17:56
He doesn't sit there and be like, Oh man, I'm just going to sit here in my khaki pants
18:00
and my kids and just sit there and let this guy do what he does.
18:03
No, he fricking blinds them, right, you know, seemed like a pretty gangster move to me.
18:08
Well, and if you go to go back to verse 10 and said, you son of the devil, you enemy
18:14
of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked
18:19
the straight pass of the Lord?
18:21
Again, a couple of points here, one, he doesn't seem supremely concerned about seem coming
18:25
off as nice.
18:26
No, like that doesn't seem to be his primary goal.
18:28
And again, when you read the scripture like a robot and make this point all the time,
18:32
you don't really get the feeling.
18:33
You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of deceit and villainy, will you stop
18:38
making crooked the straight pass of the Lord?
18:40
No, no, that's not how you read it.
18:42
Is that how you think he said it?
18:45
Zero percent chance he said it like that, like he probably had veins popping out of
18:50
his temples and neck and like he was probably red face and he was getting after these people.
18:55
And so that doesn't mean that every time you share the gospel, every time, every time
18:58
you talk about God, you need to be literally screaming in people's faces.
19:01
I don't think there's any defense of that.
19:03
But there are times where it's like, you know, when it comes to the gospel, being nice should
19:07
not be our first goal, like it should almost be, no, we need to offend you right.
19:12
Now, with the message, not with how I present it, but with the message.
19:16
To reference Jordan Peterson a little bit, I would say Paul is not very agreeable, right?
19:20
Right.
19:21
Right.
19:22
Yeah.
19:23
His agreeableness scale is very low, which that should be okay.
19:24
If I was telling us that that's okay, we don't have to always be agreeable.
19:28
Sometimes we need to not be agreeable as in we need to blind this fool right now.
19:32
Yeah.
19:33
So sometimes we hear the phrase, you know, hate the sin, but love the sinner.
19:37
But then Terry has talked about a lot in our Sunday school class, the idea that there
19:41
are times that you truly do have a disdain for the sinner, especially in the case when
19:49
someone is causing other people to stumble.
19:52
So it's like the idea that whole phrase, hate the sin, love the sinner is a little bit different
19:56
whenever you think about your kids and a drug dealer who's doing them, you know, trying
20:01
to deal drugs at the school, like, yeah, you can hate the sin of that particular situation.
20:06
But really that person is there to, to their goal and their reason for being there is a
20:12
very evil desire.
20:13
And in that case, you don't worry about that whole phrase.
20:16
You say you get blind, you know, like, like get out of here.
20:19
You're going to do your own thing.
20:21
Um, one, one crazy thing about this and being my daughter, we, we went over this passage.
20:25
She's 13, kind of at that stage that she's surprising me in what she's taken in.
20:31
I had never noticed this before, but Paul encounters this guy and she made, she made
20:37
the connection that he does to him exactly what Jesus did to Paul.
20:42
Yeah.
20:43
Like Paul, Paul's there and he's like this guy.
20:45
He's like twisting stuff.
20:46
He's doing all this stuff.
20:47
And he goes, you know, what was really good for me?
20:50
Yeah.
20:51
When Jesus knocked me on my tail and made me blind for a little while, go take some of
20:54
that medicine and let's see how you feel afterwards.
20:56
Shout out to little used as that's great.
20:58
I was blown, whenever she said it, I just kind of pause and I was like, is that right?
21:03
Yeah.
21:04
That's right.
21:05
Oh my goodness.
21:06
That's right.
21:07
That's right.
21:08
So, uh, yeah, it was pretty, pretty good, you know, proud dad moment, but I did think
21:10
about that.
21:11
It's like Paul used what happened in his circumstance.
21:14
We don't know what happened to this guy, but, but he knew what, he knew what was good
21:18
for him.
21:19
He was like, Hey, go take, go take some of that.
21:21
Well, and bar Jesus was not passively opposed to the gospel message being spread.
21:25
He was very actively opposed to it because bar Jesus means son of the savior.
21:29
And so think about it, perhaps it would be a false prophet or a false teacher or a wolf
21:33
and sheep's clothing that, you know, it's trying to sound Christian or you have people
21:36
in culture that are like clearly atheistic and they're telling you, no, no, no, no, what
21:41
I'm doing and saying is moral.
21:43
What you're doing and saying is not moral, listen to me.
21:47
And again, those things should not be met with polite suggestions and again, it's easy
21:53
for a guy like me that's kind of naturally that way, like naturally more lion than lamb
21:58
naturally more aggressive and, you know, ready to fight.
22:01
But for those of you out there that are a little bit more calm, a little bit more reserved,
22:05
a little bit more lamb, a little bit more introverted, this is a very important thing for you because
22:08
I'll have guys, you know, ask me all the time, like, Hey man, I'm trying to be more spiritually
22:12
mentally and physically resilient.
22:13
I want to be better equipped to push back darkness.
22:16
And then they'll kind of describe to me how the gospel plays out in their daily life.
22:19
And it's like, man, it seems like you've got an extreme lack of boldness.
22:22
It's like if you actually believe this, you would think that that belief would drive you
22:26
beyond the potential awkwardness of pushing back against somebody.
22:29
And again, you don't go default aggressive, but again, this is described in just a few
22:35
verses here.
22:36
This was probably taking place over a long period of time.
22:39
And he finally got fed up and is like, no, like, that's it, we're not, we're not talking
22:42
about this anymore.
22:43
I think that that's really important and says, I don't have any times already in this chapter,
22:48
but filled with the Holy Spirit, filled with the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit said, so
22:53
it's not.
22:54
I mean, just, you know, Paul and Barnabas out there, they're going through the work of
22:58
the Holy Spirit.
22:59
These guys are the ones performing the acts, I guess, just kind of interesting to, I think
23:03
the Holy Spirit gets left out of a lot of things, even today.
23:06
Yeah.
23:07
Well, and Derek, that's actually a really good point because it wasn't like, you know, verse
23:10
nine, it wasn't like filled with anger looked at him intently knows filled with the Holy
23:15
Spirit, and it led him to do something that some people might seem or find to be icky
23:19
or rude.
23:20
Yeah.
23:21
What do you think that look was like, dude, like, how intently do you have to look at somebody
23:25
for people to write it down and be like, he looked at him real intensely.
23:29
Well, he looked at a guy and blinded him.
23:31
I mean, I don't know that I've ever done that before.
23:33
And so I did immediately think of the, you know, the guy from Sandlot, you know, at the
23:36
very end, Mr. Myrtle, who he took, you know, he took the pitch of the head and went blind
23:39
and all that.
23:40
And it was like the only one that thought about the Sandlot.
23:42
That's like the only other other than Paul.
23:44
That's the only famous person I know that, you know, went blind, but, you know, slightly
23:47
different circumstances.
23:48
Slightly.
23:49
To the blindness.
23:50
All right.
23:51
Well, that, that went over like a lead balloon.
23:52
Way to go, Kyle.
23:53
All right.
23:54
Hey, we need to keep this momentum going.
23:55
Let's do Adam.
23:56
Let's do just 13 through 15 real quick.
23:59
Now Paul and his companions put out to see from Pafas and came to Perga in Pemphalia,
24:04
but John left them and returned to Jerusalem, but going on from Perga, they arrived at
24:09
Sidon Antioch and on the Sabbath day, they went into the synagogue and sat down after
24:15
the reading of the law and the prophets, the synagogue officials sent to them saying, brethren,
24:20
if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it, Paul stood up and motioning
24:24
with his hand said, and we're going to keep you on a cliffhanger because he is going to
24:28
address these, these folks here in just a second.
24:31
So a couple of things to point out.
24:32
So when he talks about John and verse 13, this is John Mark.
24:35
This is as of the book of Mark.
24:37
So this guy did go on to ride a gospel, but for whatever reason, he quit.
24:42
Like he, some people, I've seen a lot of different things like he got sick.
24:47
He was homesick, you know, didn't really like the people who was traveling with his feet
24:51
started to hurt something like that.
24:53
But for whatever reason, the dude quit, and there's a whole lot that we can talk about
24:57
and we can maybe get into it now, but I did want to point one thing out about verse 14.
25:04
So I saw this and I'm going to read it directly.
25:06
This was from a commentary by an author named pole hill, because we see here, but they went
25:11
on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia.
25:14
And we just read that.
25:15
And we don't know what that means, but I want to read this here, Antioch lays some 100 miles
25:19
to the north across the Taurus mountain range.
25:22
The route was barren, often flooded by swollen mountain streams and notorious for its bandits,
25:28
which even the Romans had difficulty bringing under control.
25:31
Antioch was in the highlands, which was about 3,600 feet above sea level.
25:35
So this place sucks.
25:37
This place sucks a lot.
25:38
You know, when the Romans are like, we can't get these bandits under control, do you know
25:42
how bad of a bandit problem you have?
25:45
And so again, that's just one line.
25:47
And so I think for an in modernity, you know, there's kind of like this, you know, movement
25:51
for like tough guy, Christianity, some of it's like way too aggro.
25:54
There's it's all line, no lamb and all that.
25:56
And so we always have to be careful.
25:58
But these were, these were tough dudes.
26:01
I mean, they didn't just walk up a nice path whenever it was 72 degrees and sunny.
26:06
Like they got after it and sandals in mountain ranges.
26:10
You know what I mean?
26:11
And as as awesome as that is, how many of us would have been willing to sit there in
26:15
the second that they say, brethren, if any of you have any words, any words to say, Paul
26:20
immediately stands up.
26:21
This is, I wrote down, this is my hold my beer.
26:24
I'm your huckleberry right now.
26:26
Let's go.
26:27
Yeah.
26:28
I think that's absolutely true.
26:29
And for you guys, I kind of lose sight of how tough these guys are because I sometimes
26:34
will read through it like these are just like porcelain dolls that we're talking to each
26:37
other.
26:38
And I kind of forget like, no, these were really rough dudes that in order to spread these
26:42
messages over years and decades and however much like they went on foot.
26:46
They didn't have catered meals like there was not a whole lot of comfort.
26:49
Isn't he's they're in the synagogue surrounded by men.
26:53
They don't know.
26:54
How many men are in this room?
26:56
Probably a lot of probably really prominent men and they have the wherewithal to be able
27:02
to stand up and just immediately start speaking.
27:04
That's pretty cool.
27:05
I think that says a lot to I'll say saw at this point because like the people that would
27:08
have been there, even though they may not have known the other people there, people
27:13
knew who saw was like whenever we're first introduced to him, he's this young man, but
27:18
he is he is like this guy that has enough clout that he's able to go get letters from
27:22
Jerusalem to start putting these Christians away like he's not just a nobody.
27:27
People know him.
27:28
People think, hey, you know, it's like a guest pastor in a place.
27:32
Whenever you're there, there's the Moses seat, somebody was sitting in there and then at
27:35
a certain point, I think something similar happens to Jesus at one point where they get
27:39
done reading the scripture and then it's kind of open.
27:43
But in this case, they actually reach out to him and like, Hey, you're somebody.
27:47
Why don't you share with us what's going on?
27:49
Yeah, there's so much here.
27:51
And that's again, guys, whenever however you read the Bible, I'm a guy that just likes
27:55
to get it done.
27:56
Like let's just go ahead and move on.
27:57
But when you slow down a little bit and when you have really good commentaries or when you
28:01
have the log on, software, it does help you kind of slow down to really take in the different
28:05
points here.
28:06
So Derek, if you can do 16 through 25, and again, we're going to see Paul here who's
28:11
going to be catering his presentation to a Jewish audience.
28:14
I mean, the Jews, they know David, they know the law.
28:16
They know the Old Testament story, but he's getting them set up for the rest of this.
28:20
So 16 through 25.
28:22
All right.
28:23
So Paul stood up in motion with his hand said, men of Israel and you who feared God, listen,
28:29
the God of this people Israel shows our fathers and made the people great during their stay
28:33
in the land of Egypt and with uplifted arm, he held them out, held them out of it.
28:38
And for about 40 years, he put up with them in the wilderness and after destroying seven
28:43
nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them gave up gave them their land as an inheritance.
28:49
Paul this took about 450 years.
28:52
And after that, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
28:55
Then they asked for a king and God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of
29:00
Benjamin for 40 years.
29:03
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king of whom he testified
29:07
and said, I have found in David, the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do my
29:13
will of this man's offspring, God has brought up to Israel, a savior, Jesus, as he promised.
29:21
Before before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of
29:25
Israel.
29:26
And as John was finishing his course, he said, What do you suppose that I am?
29:30
I am not he, no, but behold, after me, one is coming, the sandals of hoops, feet, I am
29:35
unworthy to a saint whose feet, I'm unworthy to untie.
29:39
I was going to pause throughout, but I really think we should just kind of keep this going.
29:43
Russell, how about you pick up in verse 26 and let's read through 37, please.
29:49
Brothers and family of Abraham and those among you who fear God to us has been sent this
29:55
message of the of this salvation for those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers because
30:02
they did not recognize him or understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read
30:07
every Sabbath fulfilled them by condemning him, and though they found in him no guilt
30:12
worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
30:15
And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the
30:20
tree and laid him in a tomb, but God raised him from the dead.
30:24
And for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem,
30:29
who were now his witnesses to the people.
30:32
And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this has been fulfilled
30:37
to us, the children by raising Jesus also as also it is written in the second song.
30:44
You were my son.
30:45
Today I have begotten you as for the fact that he raised him from the dead.
30:49
No more to return to corruption as was spoken in this way.
30:53
I will give you the holy one in the holy and sure blessing of David, therefore he says
31:00
also in another Psalms, you will not let your holy one see corruption.
31:05
For David after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation fell asleep and
31:09
was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.
31:16
Let it be known to you therefore brothers that through this man, forgiveness of sin is proclaimed
31:20
to you.
31:21
Did you say go ahead and go through forty one, let's go and wrap it up and by him, everyone
31:26
who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of
31:31
Moses.
31:32
Beware therefore less what is said in the prophets should come about look you scoffers
31:37
be astonished and perish from doing your work in your days of work that you will not believe
31:42
even if one tells you of it.
31:46
Appreciate you going through all that.
31:47
So here's the thing with that entire section there.
31:50
There are simpler gospel presentations that I've heard, but if you were to tell someone
31:57
who really doesn't know anything like not terribly familiar with the Old Testament,
32:03
not terribly familiar with the law or the prophets or the or the New Testament or any
32:07
of those types of things, I feel like this segment of scripture from verse 16 through
32:12
verse 41, that is a pretty dadgum good and mega robust presentation of the gospel.
32:18
So that's the thing that struck me.
32:20
That's why I want to kind of, hey, let's stop and break it down.
32:22
But it's like, no, let's let's see what this feels like in its totality.
32:25
I mean, does it feel the same way for you guys?
32:28
Yeah, I just wrote down like a history lesson and point to the gospel and it's pointing
32:33
to Jesus the whole time as the Messiah, especially an elevator speech of what Stephen did.
32:39
Yeah.
32:40
And you know, Stephen's you start reading that one and you're like, we're still going.
32:43
We're still going.
32:44
We're still going.
32:45
There's so much detail, but you can definitely tell this is along the same lines.
32:49
He's like, I'm going to convince you that I know, I know what I'm talking about in relation
32:53
to where you sit right now.
32:56
And then I'm going to say where this goes.
32:58
And then I'm going to give you a warning to to say, don't let yourself be a part of this
33:02
crowd that in the scripture, it says that they would not hear what was to be said, which
33:06
I feel like was a, you know, obviously it took for them.
33:11
I also think we have to keep in mind, who is he speaking to?
33:13
He's speaking to Jews in the synagogue and from 16 through 22, he's just serving up what
33:20
they want here.
33:21
Yeah.
33:22
And you know, and you could imagine if you're trying to look into the room, you're just
33:24
going to see a bunch of men with their beards, not in their head.
33:28
This is great.
33:29
This is great.
33:30
23 is when everything changes, 23 verse 23 to 3.
33:35
From the descendants of this man according to promise, God has brought to Israel a savior,
33:40
Jesus.
33:41
Oops.
33:42
At that point, you would imagine that everybody in that room's like, record screech.
33:46
Wait a minute.
33:47
Wait a minute.
33:48
This is, this is now changing into something different.
33:50
And he's kind of doing a little apologetic deal there that he knows what's questioned
33:54
is about to be asked.
33:56
And so he's, he's just preemptive on, I know we're going to go with this.
33:59
So I'm just going to go ahead and clear this up, you know, with some scripture, and it's
34:04
no different what Jesus did when the Pharisees come to challenge him, you know, Saul was originally
34:09
a Pharisee.
34:10
So it's the same thing.
34:11
Making that and twisting it, doing the exact same thing.
34:13
Well, and nobody in that audience of, you know, cornpeckers at the very beginning, but
34:18
that's, that's what you mean.
34:19
That's what you say whenever people are like pecking corn when they agree with you.
34:21
Cornpeckers, right?
34:22
Do you know that?
34:23
Did you just learn that?
34:24
That's a real, that's a real thing is cornpeckers.
34:25
That sounds like the same thing.
34:27
You want a bunch of cornpeckers in your crowd is what I'm saying.
34:29
Like, you know, cause that means they're kind of falling around.
34:31
Russell, you don't seem convinced.
34:32
That's a real thing.
34:33
I kind of think this is one of those things you're trying to convince us and then you get
34:36
paid 20 bucks.
34:37
Yeah.
34:38
I mentioned cornpeckers.
34:39
I got a bingo sheet from a billionaire that's like, all right, if you can work these random
34:42
things in.
34:43
Yeah.
34:44
Yeah.
34:45
Yeah.
34:46
Cornpeckers.
34:47
All right.
34:48
There, I think that was the fifth time right there.
34:49
So I definitely got paid.
34:50
But right.
34:51
So you have all these people that are agreeing, agreeing, agreeing, and then it's like record
34:52
screech Jesus, but that also reminds me as, as we talk about that, when you hear people
34:56
that'll get up at a, you know, Grammys or get up at some thing and then they'll thank
35:00
God and it doesn't seem funny.
35:03
But the moment when someone says, I just thank you for the sacrifice that Jesus made for me
35:06
and for all humanity, it's like, he said, Jesus, like it just feels way different.
35:11
And right here, it's like, yeah, like he has brought an Israel as savior and we had him,
35:17
like his name was Jesus, right?
35:19
And like, cause it was all preparation for the coming of Christ, everyone's like, yeah,
35:22
yeah.
35:23
Christ is definitely coming.
35:24
And then it's like, yeah, he came and y'all killed him.
35:26
It gets even worse in verse 22.
35:28
For those who live in Jerusalem and the rulers, recognizing neither him nor the utterances
35:33
of the prophets, which are red, every Sabbath, he's telling them, you read this every week.
35:39
You've read it over and over and over and you guys fulfilled it by condemning him one.
35:45
So here's the thing.
35:46
And I know we bring this up a lot, but we get new audience members every week and all that.
35:50
And so we're so, so glad for the new listeners, but there's the book, Ordinary Men where it
35:54
talks about this Polish group of police officers and they go in relatively short time period
36:01
from being normal police officers, protecting and serving the populace to taking Jewish women
36:07
and children out into the middle of the woods and shooting them in the back of the head
36:11
and throwing them in mass graves, like at the behest of the third Reich.
36:15
How in the world does that happen?
36:16
And we always look back in history and we think, well, that wouldn't have been us.
36:20
Like we would have been the people that would have been helping on the Underground Railroad.
36:23
We wouldn't have been slave owners.
36:24
We wouldn't have been working on plantations like at the behest of a landowner that owned
36:28
slaves and abusing the slaves and all that, certainly not us.
36:32
I have no misgivings about who I might have been back in history.
36:36
Had I been, you know, a guy in my early twenties in the late thirties in Germany and not getting
36:40
all riled up by some political candidate that ends up killing seven million Jews.
36:44
And so like, I think that that's important for all of us to kind of be sober minded
36:47
as we approach this because it's, it's very easy for us as Christians that know the end
36:51
of the story to be like, what idiots?
36:54
Like they read this every single week and they missed it.
36:58
But I mean, does that give more credence to the argument about like, hey, it's not us
37:02
that opens up our eyes like it's God that opens up our eyes.
37:04
We see that.
37:05
And even in this chunk of acts that we're going to be going on to, it's like, it's not us
37:09
that figures it out.
37:10
It's God that opens our eyes to it.
37:11
You know what I mean?
37:12
And there's some scripture that even talks about the idea that were they even able to
37:16
understand at that time, you know, that there are things that have been revealed to us that
37:20
even angels long for and stuff, you know, just talking to the disciples, like this stuff,
37:24
their eyes and ears are closed right now and that's on purpose too.
37:29
And so it gets into that whole realm of, you know, could they have understood?
37:33
And definitely I would fall on the side of, I would probably have been on the wrong side
37:38
of a lot of this stuff for sure.
37:40
Just growing up in the church, being of that mindset, having that influence, it's a scary
37:45
thing to think about.
37:46
Well, and also you get to the point where, look, look what just happened, you know, whenever
37:51
he, whenever Jesus arrives, you know, Palm Sunday he arrives with the palm leaves and
37:55
this triumphal, triumphal entry and in less than a week, those exact same people are calling
38:01
for him to be killed, like when it should have been, you know, Barabbas, right?
38:05
That's going to be another recurring theme in just a second about just one more week.
38:09
You know, one more week, people's minds change a lot.
38:11
Yeah.
38:12
It didn't do it the way they wanted it.
38:13
I saw a meme the other day that was about a dad and said, being a dad, one of the things
38:18
I love about being a dad is being told every day how I'm wrong about everything by people
38:23
that rely on me for food shelter.
38:25
And it's like, when you transfer that to God and, you know, like how many times in the
38:31
Old Testament and New Testament, like people are just like, no, no, no, this way, this
38:35
way.
38:36
He's like, no, I got this.
38:37
Yeah.
38:38
Look at how he talked to Joe.
38:39
He's like, I'm sorry.
38:40
Were you there?
38:41
When I did any of this, like, no.
38:42
Okay.
38:43
Perhaps shut your mouth.
38:44
Like maybe that would be a good thing to do.
38:45
And then when we get to the end of that, because, you know, this whole thing that he's doing,
38:50
he's doing it brilliantly as a communicator because he's preparing them for the coming
38:54
of the Christ, which they're all familiar with.
38:55
But then he gets into the death and resurrection, resurrection of Christ, which is the actual,
38:59
you know, meat of the gospel, but then 38 through 41, this is the application, right?
39:04
This is the promise of our justification and our forgiveness, but it's only for those that
39:09
end up trusting in Jesus.
39:11
I do want to get into verse 40 there where it says, "Beware therefore, lest what is said
39:15
in the prophets should come about," and then it talks about, you know, scoffers.
39:20
This beware is a warning to people.
39:22
This isn't like a, hey, you know, keep this in mind or, hey, keep your head on and swivel.
39:26
Like, this is a straight up warning to people that are scoffers at Christianity, people that
39:32
reject the Bible, people that are heart of heart and people that are cynical.
39:38
And, you know, as we get into this discussion, there's a difference between a skeptic and
39:41
a cynic.
39:42
So a skeptic will look at a situation or philosophy and be like, hmm, I don't really know about
39:47
that.
39:48
Can you explain that to me?
39:50
Whereas a cynic is like, there's no way that's, that could possibly be true.
39:53
And I've used this example before, you know, I always tell people, you should ask someone
39:58
like, Hey, if you were wrong about that, would you want me to tell you?
40:01
Would you want to know?
40:02
I had this guy that said something that was factually inaccurate about Islam.
40:05
And I reached out to him personally and I said, Hey, you said this, this is, you know,
40:08
if you were wrong about this, would you want to know, Oh, I'm not wrong.
40:11
That guy was a cynic against the truth.
40:13
He wasn't skeptical.
40:14
Cause if he was skeptical, he would have been like, Oh, wait a minute, like, I thought this
40:18
was accurate.
40:19
That's why I shared it.
40:20
Is it not?
40:21
And so I think it's, it's helpful for us as Christians to make sure that we have a posture
40:24
of a skeptic and not a cynic because there's nothing wrong with skepticism.
40:28
It causes you to dive in and study and try to figure things out.
40:32
But man, this is a straight up be where to people that are just going to stay cynical,
40:36
scoff like it's major bad news.
40:38
Yeah.
40:39
If it's good to be skeptical, we probably wouldn't have Peter.
40:41
Sure.
40:42
I love me.
40:43
Some Peter.
40:44
Yeah.
40:45
He was skeptical.
40:46
That was the difference too in the pro council and the magician back, back a few verses back.
40:50
You know, you got one that is, he's like, Hey, I kind of need you to come and talk about
40:53
this stuff.
40:54
Cause I kind of am curious to want to know what's going on, probably pretty skeptical.
40:59
The other one was a cynic and Paul dealt with him accordingly.
41:03
When I think as we go back to that, this, this individual that was intelligent, we all
41:09
know people that are intelligent, that are not intellectually honest.
41:12
Okay.
41:13
So these are people that love their position and they love surrounding themselves with
41:17
other people that agree with that position.
41:20
And then they're just shocked and appalled when people oppose that.
41:23
He goes back to whenever the, the university presidents were before Congress talking about
41:27
anti-Semitism on campus.
41:29
And you could tell that they were just absolutely perplexed that anyone thought differently
41:34
than they did, because the, I mean, they're the president of Harvard and Columbia and MIT
41:40
and how could anyone possibly disagree with us?
41:42
We are literally smarter than you.
41:44
We got 36s on our ACTs who were like, I don't know what a, you know, a SAT scores would be,
41:49
but like, you know, we're really, we're geniuses, but this guy, this pro console was so intellectually
41:56
honest to allow himself to be challenged and including us at this table.
42:01
We've got to make sure that we're in that position as well.
42:04
So we shouldn't hide from content that is going to challenge our presuppositions.
42:08
We should allow those challenges to deepen our faith because we will find that, you know,
42:13
our faith is not wanting, but, you know, when we dig into the scripture and dig into the
42:16
evidence.
42:17
I do want to say one thing about this every time it says, and those that fear that you
42:22
who fear God, I'd seen that some, sometimes not all the time, but sometimes that is a reference
42:27
to the converted, uh, Gentiles to Judaism that had already converted to Judaism.
42:33
So they, they would say like the people of Israel, and then they would say also you who
42:38
fear God, meaning you people that aren't of our lineage, but still have come to fear
42:43
the Lord, you, you also, I have something to tell you.
42:46
And we see more of those people, uh, here in the upcoming chapters, for sure.
42:50
All right.
42:51
So I'm going to take a volunteer for this last section, volunteer gets to eat lunch first.
42:55
All right.
42:56
42 through 52.
42:57
Let's take it.
42:58
Bam.
42:59
As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken
43:03
to them.
43:04
The next Sabbath.
43:05
Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews in the God-fearing
43:09
process, process of the lights followed Paul and Barnabas who speaking to them were urging
43:14
them to continue in the grace of God.
43:17
The next Sabbath, nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord, but when the
43:21
Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things
43:26
spoken by Paul and were blaspheming.
43:29
Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, it was necessary that the word of God be spoken
43:33
to you first, since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life.
43:38
Behold, we are turning to the Gentiles for so the Lord has commanded us, I have placed
43:44
you as a light for the Gentiles that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.
43:49
When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord.
43:53
And as many had been appointed to the eternal life believed, and the word of the Lord was
43:58
being spread through the whole region, but the Jews incited the devout women of prominence
44:02
and the leading men of the city and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and
44:08
drove them out of the district, but they shook off the dust off their feet in protest against
44:12
them and went to Iconium, and the disciples were continually filled with joy and with
44:17
the Holy Spirit.
44:18
Is that an IV, that you read? New American standard. Okay, NASB. Okay. So there's a
44:25
lot that we can get in here. The one thing that I was intrigued by is kind of the mixed
44:30
bag of evangelism that you see here. So you see that somewhere intrigued by the message.
44:36
That's intriguing. Some just accepted it and we can see, you know, in 48, maybe we can
44:41
have a debate here. It says they were appointed to eternal life, and they believed some outright
44:46
rejected it, and some became enraged by it. But everyone had a reaction of some kind.
44:51
And when you're doing evangelism, you know, especially for a guy like me, like I can get,
44:56
you know, 50 five star reviews, I love this greatest show in the world. This is the best
45:01
thing ever. And then I get one slappy who's like a one star review because I don't like
45:06
metal music and this is the devil's music. And then that's the only one I think about.
45:10
That was me.
45:11
You left that. Come on. But like, that's the thing that is becoming, you know, so apparent
45:16
is like, if you're doing any type of real evangelism, like it's going to be a mixed
45:20
bag. Like you're going to get people that are, man, don't really care. Oh, that sounds
45:23
good. Okay. I accept that. I don't really like that. Or they vehemently don't like that.
45:28
And so that's important for us for all of us as we move forward in any type of evangelistic
45:32
endeavor was was the change in tone and the change in the Jews reaction, not stark and
45:38
crazy. Verse 41 was the mic drop moment where is behold, you scoffers and you would think
45:43
that they would have been offended by that. But instead, verse 42, the people kept begging
45:48
for more. They wanted more information. Please come back again. And then only two verses
45:53
later, verse 44, the next Sabbath, that's one week later, verse 40, verse 45, when the Jews
46:01
saw the crowds, they were jealous. They were filled with jealousy. And now all of a sudden
46:05
the story has completely changed. How do you go so quick from verse 42, you're begging
46:11
for more to verse 45, you're filled with jealousy. And now you're going to contradict
46:15
everything spoken. And you go back to the beginning, Paul was foreshadowing. He knew this was going
46:21
to happen. He knew it was going to happen. That's why he quoted earlier, the scripture
46:25
that says, um, a work which you will never believe though someone should describe it
46:32
to you. That was at the end of 41. He was talking to them. He knew what they were going
46:37
to do just one short week later. So I gave it to you. Now I'm on to the Gentiles entitlement.
46:43
Right. Yeah. Yeah. Cause I mean, that's, that's really what comes down to it. They, they waited
46:48
till they saw the people gathered, which the people that were gathering were not their
46:53
people. Just beyond, I mean, the whole, the whole town. Now maybe the first time this was
46:58
talked in the synagogue, it was majority their people, the Jewish people. We got some other
47:03
converts that have already been converted to Judaism. They're fine. But all of a sudden
47:07
the next week, there's people in this building I have never seen before in my life. Actually,
47:12
I've seen them at some other places and I don't think they should be here. And, and
47:16
they did not like that. They were like, hold on, as long as we have exclusive exclusivity
47:22
right over this, we're good. But when you said to all you really meant to all, no, no, no,
47:28
no, no. Yeah. And even the church will find out, you know, later on, you know, the church
47:33
ends up dealing with that same type of deal is where do we draw the line with these other
47:39
people, you know, coming in. I feel like we get that today too. Like our church is very,
47:45
I don't know, what do you call it? Traditional. Traditional. Yeah. It's not a lot of variants
47:51
in the, in the crowd. And then not necessarily our church, but just in general, like I feel
47:56
like it's easy to like, well, they don't really belong here. Right. And I'll catch myself
48:03
doing that sometimes I try not to, right? And like, you know, working in the air force
48:08
and stuff. It's like, there's no way this guy's going to kind of my church. And then
48:13
we got a guy I would have never said he's coming to our church. He's at our church. Man,
48:16
Prince of the Lord, right? Yeah. Or sometimes we're guilty of saying like, ah, it's not that
48:21
I don't want them to come to faith or, but I just think there's a place better suited
48:25
for them, you know, or better suited for this particular, um, I, you know, I'll, I'll mention
48:31
our church has a very robust prison ministry going on. And I have to admit that whenever
48:36
that first started, um, when we started having prisoners get out of prison and they were
48:43
taken up three or four rows in the sanctuary right where we're being my family sit, there
48:47
was some of this that came in that I had to sit with the Lord and say, Lord, remove this
48:52
of me. And it's to my own disgrace that I even let that in. But there is some of that
48:57
that just happens that is part of our fleshly nature that we have to, you know, sacrifice
49:02
daily and say, uh, I know where this road is going. This doesn't feel like this is
49:06
spirit led. This feels like this is a part of my flesh starting to starting to eat away
49:11
at me. When I think as well, um, I was told here recently about a guy who, whom I met
49:16
and can't really get into the details, but this guy, uh, was supposed to be in prison
49:21
for the rest of his life, like multiple life sentences. Then there's only a few things
49:24
you can do to get that, but this guy's going to be freed pretty soon. Um, and his testimony
49:33
is not only insane, but his zeal for the Lord and for evangelism and the spreading of the
49:37
gospel is the only thing that kind of supersedes his kind of crazy story. And imagine the people
49:44
that are going to have him be a part of the congregation. Cause his dude's tatted up.
49:49
He was clicked up. Like a lot of things went down before, before Christ said no moss. And
49:54
it's like, imagine someone looking at that guy and being like, he has visible tattoos.
50:00
You shouldn't be here. Like, but again, there are those traditional places. I remember
50:04
Joby telling that story about whenever he brought a stripper to his church, Sunshine,
50:08
right? So he worked at a gym and, you know, the, the, a lot of strippers would come and
50:11
go to the gym. And so he's like sharing the gospel with these strippers. And he's like,
50:15
this one named Sunshine agreed to go to church with them. Well, she shows up to church. Like
50:17
she would show up, you know, on a date with a John, maybe. And you know, the, she was
50:22
just treated horribly by these people. And to this day, Joby, don't know, it doesn't
50:27
know what happened with her. She would, she was incredibly embarrassed and destroyed by
50:31
that experience. And it's because you had a lot of people, a lot of haughty, spirited
50:35
people that are like, oh, we just, we have standards here and you just don't quite hit
50:38
those standards. But another thing, when you get into verse 45, when it talks about, you
50:41
know, the Jews saw the crowd and you know, they were, they were jealous and began to
50:44
contradict. This is what happens when you have cultural elites, which is exactly who
50:49
these people were at this time in this culture. They will the cultural elites that when they
50:53
lose control of the minds of the populace, they don't like it one solitary bit. You will
51:00
get in line and you will do this. And before anyone thinks I'm making, you know, a description
51:04
of the democratic party, I'm describing both major parties in this country to where it's
51:07
like, if you go outside this box, you were no longer in the club, you better get in line
51:13
by the time the election comes around, you better get in line by the time, you know,
51:16
we need you to support a candidate or campaign or knock doors or donate or something like
51:20
that. We see that with our cultural elites. Wait a minute, you don't think a little girl
51:25
can choose their gender. You're a bigot. Why? I'm a cultural elite and I have a fancy degree
51:29
on my wall. And I think that that's something that happened here. You have people that are
51:33
impressional, impressionable or maybe some low IQ individuals that were totally okay
51:37
with us. Give me more, give me more, give me more. Right up until the moment the cultural
51:41
elites were like, Nope, we're not doing this. And if you go against what we say, you're
51:45
wrong. Right. We see that all over the place. It also says something about that that area
51:49
because of what was happening, like that there were people that were ready for the harvest
51:54
and the idea that there were obviously a lot of Gentiles that felt like there was some
51:59
truth happening over at the synagogue, but felt like that there was no way for them to
52:04
ever be able to partake in what was going on there. So the first time that there's somebody
52:08
there saying, Hey, we're opening this up. This is for you guys too. They hear that and they
52:13
show up immediately again back to like the work of the Holy Spirit was was doing stuff
52:19
prior to this. And then Paul comes in and he says the words and the spirit was like,
52:23
Yep, that's all I needed you to do. Yeah. Very good guys, anything else on acts 13 before
52:30
we close it out? Does anybody want to do the smelling salts just one more time as we leave
52:35
or is that like a scene through? Yeah, yeah, you know, I literally think it's maybe partially
52:40
in this microphone here in the squishy thing because when I sniff close to it, I'm getting
52:44
more of it. So we're gonna need a new microphone. These aren't expensive, are they? No, wait,
52:50
I have several just laying around so we can just switch those out. But no, no takers on the second.
52:55
No, no, but I did want to say one thing. Go ahead. Go back to 13. Yeah, just something that leads
53:01
us into next week, how the disciples, you know, Paul in this situation, Barnabas, how they felt
53:06
about kind of being shunned by by the Jewish people is when they when they shook the dust off their
53:12
feet, that was something that Jewish people did when they left Gentile areas. So they didn't want
53:19
to carry the dust from going to a Gentile area back to where they were. And so they would kick
53:25
the dust off because they didn't even want the unclean dust. And here you have not only a complete
53:31
reversal where things are going, you have the complete dichotomy switch where it's saying,
53:37
not only do I not agree with you, but you are now on the bad side of us at this point.
53:43
Yep, that'll certainly get us going into Acts 14, which guys make sure you are read through Acts 14.
53:49
