0:30 This is Undaunted Life, a Man's Podcast.
0:54 I'm your host Kyle Thompson, let's get into it.
0:57 Welcome back to The Forging Table.
0:58 The mission of Undaunted Life is equipping them to push back darkness with the content
1:01 that forges spiritual mental and physical resilience.
1:04 At The Forging Table, you'll see a group of regular guys forging spiritual resilience
1:07 by digging into God's Word and we're welcoming all of you to come along on that journey with
1:10 us.
1:11 Let's go out of order.
1:12 That's Horn.
1:13 That's Dagan.
1:14 That's Winkler.
1:15 Guys, we are digging into Acts 10.
1:16 And let's just get right after it.
1:17 So, Ryan, if you would not mind, let's start out with the first eight verses of Acts 10.
1:24 That's a seria, there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian
1:29 cohort, a devout man who feared God with all his household.
1:33 He gave alms generously to the people and prayed continually to God.
1:36 About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision, an angel, of God, come in and
1:42 say to him, Cornelius.
1:44 And he stared at him in terror and said, "What is it, Lord?"
1:48 And he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God."
1:53 And now, send men to Japa to bring one Simon, who is called Peter.
1:58 He is lodging with the one Simon, a Tanner, whose house is by the sea.
2:04 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and devout soldier
2:08 from among those who attended him, having related everything to them, he sent them to Japa.
2:17 So interesting thing about this, so a centurion means, you know, you're a leader of a hundred
2:20 men, but the devout part.
2:23 So development that these guys feared God, but I guess according to something we've seen
2:27 chapter 11, doesn't necessarily mean that you were saved, but I thought there was an
2:31 interesting point from the MacArthur commentary from verse two.
2:35 It said feared God was basically akin to Gentiles that had abandoned their pagan religions
2:41 and worshiped Jehovah God.
2:44 And so because again, if you're not terribly familiar with this, you know, time in Roman
2:49 culture, I mean, they just had a just an absolute panoply of different gods, they had gods for
2:53 everything.
2:54 And then they had a God for all the gods that they may have missed, right?
2:56 So, you know, you basically have all these things.
2:59 And you know, a lot of them, part of the problems with proselytizing to the Romans was, hey,
3:04 oh yeah, Jesus, let's just add them.
3:06 Let's just add them to the menu.
3:07 And you know, we'll just take it and it's like, well, no, like this is the God.
3:10 There are no false gods, but it is interesting to see that this is, you know, clearly a Gentile
3:15 man that has, you know, kind of turned from the pagan religions underneath Roman rule
3:20 and, you know, turned to Jehovah God, I thought that was interesting.
3:23 Yeah, I think one of the things whenever I was reading through this is it's interesting
3:29 that God sent an angel to Cornelius who is a Gentile who is a God-fearing man, but for
3:35 all intents and purposes, the religion that he is following is not welcoming him.
3:41 It's not welcoming him at all.
3:43 Right.
3:44 I mean, he's a Gentile and he's worshiping the God of Israel.
3:47 It doesn't work.
3:49 And so I think it's interesting.
3:53 God sends an angel to Cornelius and to tell him to go get Peter instead of saying like,
4:01 you know, well, the angel is going to tell you the good news.
4:04 You're in.
4:05 No, it's not that way.
4:06 You go get Peter.
4:08 And I think in a way, I think Cornelius needed to hear that he was clean and welcome into
4:15 the faith by someone who is Jewish, but also Peter needed to actually go to someone where
4:24 they were considered unclean and see that they would.
4:27 It doesn't matter.
4:28 Yes.
4:29 But God's made it all clean.
4:30 It's all it's all common.
4:31 You know, it was like unlawful to be in a Gentiles home.
4:34 Yep.
4:35 Like Gentiles could be in a Jewish home, but it was unlawful for a Jew to go into a Gentiles
4:39 home.
4:40 And one of the things I think was pretty crazy to look at is that God accepts his prayers.
4:45 So you're thinking of a guy that only listens to the Jewish people, his chosen people,
4:50 but God was listening to the prayers of a Gentile.
4:52 I thought he only listened to the prayers of Calvinist.
4:54 Is that not what?
4:55 No, no, no, but the Calvinist are the only ones that can know what the right like interpretation
5:01 of the prayer.
5:02 You want to start this now?
5:03 So you shut me down.
5:04 Last week.
5:05 That's okay.
5:06 You want to start this now?
5:07 Maybe.
5:08 You want to throw it down?
5:09 Not right now.
5:10 Okay.
5:11 We'll do it.
5:12 We got doing.
5:13 Hey, we got plenty of time.
5:14 How about this and you just throw a Calvinist bomb into everything?
5:16 Come on.
5:17 That's it.
5:18 Yeah.
5:19 We're going.
5:20 They can save us.
5:21 Hey, it's in the Bible.
5:22 Dave, can we let Dave and say the Bible?
5:23 So I read this first part and, you know, I admit I don't think like everybody else.
5:29 I don't think it's straight line.
5:30 I'm a little more scatter brain, but I'm reading this thinking, had Cornelius heard the conversion
5:35 story of Saul, do you think he had heard that?
5:39 Because he's a, he's a devout believer and an angel comes to him.
5:43 And if he knows the story of Saul, right, and has heard of that story, and then an angel
5:48 comes to him and is like, hey, go get Peter.
5:52 And then like wait a minute.
5:53 Seriously, that's it.
5:54 Hey, well, you know, we'd have to assume, well, first of all, do angels talk like that?
5:59 That was kind of like super seductive.
6:01 I read that in a book somewhere.
6:02 No wonder everybody has terror.
6:04 I know.
6:05 Go get Peter.
6:06 Well, get Peter.
6:07 But like, okay, is there any way that he didn't hear about the conversion?
6:12 Because again, we have to, there were years that went by from the time that he was like
6:16 chief persecutor of the Christians to now proselytizing.
6:19 I would say it would be almost an impossibility that he had heard, not her question is why
6:23 does it matter?
6:24 No, I was just curious.
6:25 It doesn't matter.
6:26 Yeah.
6:27 I'm just not saying it matters.
6:28 I'm saying I'm curious to think like you have, you know that story.
6:32 Yeah.
6:33 And then the angel comes to you and you feel like you're have like that is the moment in
6:38 your life where you're just like, you're just like, yes, Lord, what he says, he trembles
6:44 or whatever.
6:45 And he's like, what is it, Lord?
6:46 Yeah.
6:47 He's like, go, go to, go to go to a job and get Peter.
6:50 I see what you're saying.
6:51 And he's like, I was like, where did they?
6:52 And then it's like almost crickets in the background and it's like, cool.
6:56 Yeah.
6:57 Yeah.
6:58 That's my moment.
6:59 All right.
7:00 I'll go get them.
7:01 I also like the little Google maps directions.
7:02 The angels giving him here.
7:03 Yeah.
7:04 It's like he's by the sea.
7:05 He's in Java, Java, you know, some guy named Simon, he's a tanner, I think, and I was
7:13 actually laughing as I was going through this because I was going, this almost sounds
7:16 like when I asked my wife, like, where is it going to say, I feel like I'm listening
7:21 to my wife give directions to my son.
7:24 It reminds me of the directions to shoot farms, where it's like, if you pass a beehive, you
7:28 gone too far.
7:29 You pass.
7:30 You go to the other.
7:31 I got too far.
7:32 It's like, can you drop a pen?
7:35 I mean, my goodness, like you're an angel, but you're staying with Simon.
7:38 Who's a tanner?
7:39 You're a good tanner.
7:40 Right.
7:41 If you're at the bad tanner's place, you've taken a wrong turn.
7:43 But it was a city by the sea and Java means beautiful.
7:46 Yeah.
7:47 And so, and so that's where it's like, I guess like if you were to go out to that area, that
7:51 it's like pretty, pretty bad looking area around there, but then you go to Java, man,
7:55 it's the prettiest part of that area.
7:57 Now, okay, maybe that we need to kind of, we can pull together some funds and send you
8:02 there.
8:03 Because months ago now, when I asked about, hey, think of the best landscape you've ever
8:09 seen.
8:10 Think about the most beautiful thing in nature that we ever saw and we got people talking
8:12 about, you know, the Rocky Mountains in Canada and you know, Glacier National Park and you're
8:18 like, oh, no.
8:19 Like I was at this coffee shop in Italy once and I was like, no, like not in the city and
8:23 like you couldn't come up with anything.
8:25 Next time that's asked, you throw out Japa.
8:27 Just say Japa and say what it means to me to Japa.
8:30 Say it's, it's a no brainer for me.
8:31 If you look up and look up tickets to Japa, like let's see if there's a, like a sandals,
8:36 sandals, Japa, can we, can we send them there?
8:40 It will.
8:41 An all-inclusive thing.
8:42 They got an all-inclusive in Japa.
8:43 Right.
8:44 Does biking cruises take me from getting missiles to lob that mean for that?
8:47 Probably not right now, but you know, while you're looking that up, we'll, we'll keep
8:51 this train moving to one of my favorite sections of scripture here.
8:55 So, Dagan, you get to do the honors here.
8:58 We're going to get into Peter's vision.
8:59 So let's go nine through 16 unless you've already found Japa, then we will not, they
9:03 will pause.
9:04 I will.
9:05 Why don't you go ahead and read it.
9:06 All right.
9:07 Let's hit it.
9:08 All right.
9:09 Dagan, nine through 16.
9:10 Okay.
9:11 About noon the following day as they were on their journey in approaching the city, Peter
9:13 went up on the roof to pray.
9:15 He became hungry and wanted something to eat.
9:17 And while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
9:20 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet let down to the earth by its
9:25 four corners.
9:26 He contained all kinds of four footed animals as well as reptiles and birds.
9:31 Then a voice told him, get up, Peter, kill and eat surely not Lord Peter replied, I've
9:37 never eaten anything impure or unclean.
9:40 The voice spoke to him a second time.
9:42 Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.
9:46 This happened three times and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
9:50 Now for most of us, we can't remember the first time we had bacon.
9:53 What do you want to bet that Peter remembers the first time that he had bacon?
9:58 Here's the thing.
9:59 So a couple of months ago, there was about, well, here before I get there, do we have
10:01 some Japa info?
10:02 Give us the info.
10:03 So Japa is right outside Tel Aviv.
10:07 So if you guys want to send me out there, guys were taking donations, just put it in
10:14 the memo lines.
10:15 Yeah.
10:16 Horn.
10:17 What's your minmo?
10:18 Yeah.
10:19 I'm going to depart.
10:20 Hey guys.
10:21 I wouldn't sound like one of those Pentecostal pastors right now.
10:23 I'm like, all right, guys, we need this much in 90 days.
10:26 Right.
10:27 So if we can get this done by September 9th through the 16th is when I'll go out there
10:33 and it's going to cost it's loading as loading, okay, spinning wheel of death.
10:40 Yes.
10:41 Did we, and did you add in the security costs of like the armored vehicles are now, I haven't
10:45 done that yet.
10:46 I'm just getting the airfare.
10:47 Okay.
10:48 Just the airfare.
10:49 But really what's happening is Ryan is actually a super secret soldier and we're sending him
10:54 undercover to go.
10:55 Yeah.
10:56 The pasty is white hokey dumpty looking dude on his table.
11:00 There's a thing.
11:01 You have plenty of places to sticker like hair to your body and there's not like other
11:06 hair to deal with.
11:07 Yeah.
11:08 Right.
11:09 Yeah.
11:10 I mean, I can't have a beard like that.
11:11 It's still loading, man.
11:12 You're in it slow.
11:13 You know, okay.
11:14 Maybe it's your stupid device.
11:15 Okay.
11:16 Here we go.
11:17 There it is.
11:18 It's going to be round trip.
11:19 Guys.
11:20 I think we can swing that.
11:21 Send in.
11:22 What's it called?
11:23 The beautiful city or the what?
11:24 What was the name of it?
11:25 Beautiful.
11:26 Yeah.
11:27 Yeah.
11:28 Okay.
11:29 All right, guys.
11:30 32.
11:31 Get there at 535 the next day.
11:32 It's 19 hour flight.
11:33 This is what we're going to do.
11:34 We're going to do a Sarah McLachlan style commercial in the arms of an angel.
11:35 We're going to have like slow panning of just you looking really, really sad and we have
11:38 to send you to a place that's beautiful because you were not.
11:40 Is it over here?
11:41 Yeah.
11:42 Yeah.
11:43 Right there.
11:44 You just tell them you did.
11:45 The problem is that someone's going to clip that exact thing and create that.
11:47 You're like, Hey, hold just a duck face.
11:49 Yeah.
11:50 That's okay.
11:51 That's Jake Winkler.
11:52 I thought that was Blue Steel.
11:53 I thought that was Blue Steel.
11:54 All right.
11:55 So at this point, getting back to a versus nine through 16, this is a rise, kill and
12:00 eat like this, this would have been so shocking and offensive.
12:06 But at this point, we're seeing that, you know, nothing is going to get in the way of
12:10 fellowship between Gentiles and Jews, no more dietary restrictions.
12:15 In a couple of months ago, there was a buddy of mine who, a former NFL athlete, a tremendous
12:19 unbelievable athlete and he decided that he was going to go vegan.
12:23 And I was like, that's interesting.
12:24 Like kind of let me know what was his decision behind that.
12:26 And, you know, seems like he's gotten some, you know, bad advice about that meets bad
12:31 for particular reasons, but that wasn't the argument he made to me.
12:33 The argument he made to me was, well, yeah, I mean, according to the Bible, we should
12:38 be vegetarians.
12:39 And I was like, interesting.
12:40 Where does it say that?
12:41 Yeah.
12:42 The argument, essentially, I'm paraphrasing and I want to make sure I present it as accurately
12:46 as possible.
12:47 But it was like in the garden, Adam and Eve were built to not eat animals, that there
12:53 would not be bloodshed in the garden.
12:55 And so we were built from the beginning to be processors of non meat and all that, which
13:01 he can't prove that, but that was his argument.
13:04 But then I talked to Joby about it and he's like, ax 10, bro, rise, kill and eat like
13:09 you got to be kidding me that you would think at this point that, you know, you were going
13:13 to subsist on beans and like lettuce.
13:16 Does your buddy listen to Shane Claiborne?
13:18 Is that where he's getting it from?
13:19 No, I don't think he's ashamed.
13:20 Is that supposed to be like, you know, when Jesus comes back and everything gets turned
13:23 into a series.
13:24 You're like a Tom Brady fan.
13:25 He was an NFL guy.
13:26 Like, I mean, like he's trying to bring utopia here already.
13:30 Yeah.
13:31 Aganism.
13:32 Well, it's kind of one of those things.
13:33 I we didn't have as in in depth of a conversation as I would have liked to really understand
13:39 his point of view, but I mean, when you get to this, this section, there's so much here
13:43 because basically if anyone's like trying to say that you are killing animals, animals
13:48 have rights and blah, blah, blah, and you shouldn't do that, it's that they are beautiful
13:52 and they are also here to provide us subsistence, right?
13:56 And they are freaking delicious.
13:57 Hey, the everything about Christianity would look a lot different if you stopped reading
14:02 after Genesis.
14:03 Well, yeah, I mean, if we're back in the garden, okay, I get your point.
14:07 We're not in the garden.
14:08 If sin has entered this world, we eat meat and delicious, bro, like you've got to figure
14:12 that one out.
14:13 Okay.
14:14 I we got to take a short pause here, but it's it's like it has to do with this.
14:18 I need to know not want to know not I'm desirous of this information.
14:21 I need to know what everybody's favorite meat meal they've had in their lives.
14:28 So Ryan, this one should be easy.
14:30 This isn't like, Hey, what landscape did you like the most?
14:32 If you look at your entire life, okay, no, no, no, no, that's not why I said it.
14:36 But if you look at your entire life, so it could be any number of things.
14:40 But if you think about this one particular meal, this is the best meat meal of your entire
14:45 meat eating career, who's going first, I'll go first hit it.
14:50 So a wife and I for a teeny university went to Napa Valley wine country and there was
14:55 this place called press and she got it all set up and everything and it's basically
15:00 like a course meal and they do multiple courses and pair it with wine and they came to the
15:07 meat course and it was a beef cap wagyu and like it was like probably it was like three
15:14 ounces like probably three or four ounces and it was the most amazing thing I ever had
15:19 like it melted in my mouth like a Krispy Kreme donut like it was it was so good in the glass
15:25 of wine.
15:26 And so I was like, I was like in our anniversary.
15:27 I was like, we splurged a little bit, you know, I didn't buy any cologne that year.
15:31 So like, you know, how are you okay?
15:34 I was okay.
15:35 You missed in a whole year?
15:36 Oh, yeah.
15:37 I didn't buy any clothes just for this moment.
15:40 Okay.
15:41 All right.
15:42 Which made it even sweeter, which made this even sweeter.
15:44 I was like, Hey man, can I get another one?
15:46 And he's like, he's like, I don't know, man.
15:49 He's like, it's pretty expensive.
15:51 And I'm like, what are we talking about here?
15:53 Like, wait, wait, wait, the waiter said that to you?
15:55 The waiter said it to me.
15:56 I was like, it's pretty expensive.
15:57 You should have said, you don't know me, son, bring me two more.
16:00 I was like, I was like, wait, how's, like, how much was it?
16:04 Man.
16:05 No, it's going to make me look like a [inaudible].
16:06 Like, no, because what look makes you look like a [inaudible] is spinning like 500 bucks on
16:09 cologne.
16:10 That's kind of [inaudible].
16:11 Not meat.
16:12 Not meat, brother.
16:13 Okay.
16:14 In your eyes, since it's meat, I don't look like a [inaudible].
16:18 But no, so like the guy, like, it really wasn't expensive.
16:20 Like I've had some wagyu steaks, like A5 and you're spending like 250 bucks or bucks.
16:24 And he's like $90, and I was like, oh my.
16:27 It's 90 bucks.
16:28 That's not.
16:29 He's like, yeah, man.
16:30 It's 90 bucks.
16:31 And I was like, you know what?
16:32 I think I'll do it.
16:33 He's like, because you're doing it, I'm going to throw in the, the pour of wine for free.
16:36 Hey.
16:37 I was like, cool.
16:38 You know, and I was like, yeah, I was like, yeah, so I got, I got like, it was actually
16:43 bigger this time because it wasn't a part of like the menu.
16:46 So I paid 90 bucks and I probably got like six ounces worth it and worth every last minute.
16:50 Oh, man, my wife, I was like, you want to buy it?
16:52 She's like, no, I can tell you're enjoying it.
16:53 Amen.
16:54 Yeah.
16:55 No, she's like, you can have some more lentils.
16:56 She loves me that much.
16:57 So, but yeah, no, it was like a beef cap and like the beef caps, like the top of the rib
17:01 eye.
17:02 And it's just like the rib cap.
17:03 It was flavorful.
17:04 Unbelievable.
17:05 Oh, man, it was wag.
17:06 Oh, dude.
17:07 All right, guys.
17:08 Have fun trying to top that.
17:09 It was good.
17:10 Okay.
17:11 Nicely done.
17:12 Mine's, mine's nothing like that.
17:13 I mean, I've, I've had some good meals.
17:14 The one that comes to mind is just more of like the experience of like, I remember it.
17:17 Yeah.
17:18 Yeah.
17:19 And it was at Terri Blacks in Austin, Texas and their beef ribs.
17:22 Oh boy.
17:23 I mean, it's like, I mean, they're, they probably weigh four pounds and they just, you hold,
17:27 you jiggle the bone and it just dinosaur bone.
17:29 It is.
17:30 And it, it is just like it, like it makes, makes you want to cry a little bit as you're
17:34 eating it.
17:35 Just thinking like it's smoked perfectly.
17:37 It's just melting in your mouth.
17:39 But I'm crying right now because I literally did not expect you to say a beef rib.
17:43 I thought it was going to be a honey baked ham.
17:45 No.
17:46 Yeah.
17:47 Well, you know, I, I know I look like a ham guy.
17:49 Wait, wait, wait for anyone who doesn't know why in the world we spend so much time with
17:52 and so much time on this podcast debating ham versus Turkey, it's Dagan's fault.
17:57 So if you've only been here for the last few months, Dagan, well, you can tell where you're
18:01 used to work while you're in college.
18:02 Yeah.
18:03 And started all this.
18:04 Yeah.
18:05 So like around, you know, late October, they would hire like off season, Christmas season
18:09 people and a bunch of me and my college buddies drove up to Oklahoma city to go to honey baked
18:13 ham for like, you know, seasonal help.
18:17 And we would glaze ham.
18:18 Some people would do the spiral cut thing, which was, which was cool.
18:22 I wasn't senior enough to do that.
18:24 So I glazed it and ruined me, ruined me for me, the size of the moon, I would be the size
18:30 of the moon.
18:31 If I did that.
18:32 Right.
18:33 And so that started the, the greatest debate in the history of the forging table, which
18:36 is team hammer, team Turkey.
18:37 And I got to say, at this point, are we, is it, it's probably, it's pretty even, even
18:41 with Chandler screwed it over, when he was like, look, Turkey, because everybody says
18:46 Turkey, because the things are going to be like, don't think, yeah, what if it's like
18:49 October the 17th, we're like, that's what we're talking about.
18:53 But no, Peter loved him.
18:55 He served a dream about eating it.
18:57 Right.
18:58 Most people, whoever has a dream about like Thanksgiving, Turkey.
19:00 So all right.
19:01 So that's a good one, Deagan man, obviously, I don't miss a lot of meals.
19:06 I have, I know I have a whole, there's the sentimental side and then there's just quantity.
19:12 I'm going to go first, my grandpa rug had an old tasty bake grill and was a magician
19:23 with steaks.
19:25 Every year my grand, my dad, when he, it was his birthday, he would go and buy steaks
19:32 from the butcher and then he would make them on the tasty bake and had a whole process
19:36 for preparing them and ever, and I tried to learn it.
19:39 I couldn't.
19:40 I was too young.
19:41 But he had a, he would always make everybody a filet except for me.
19:47 I got a big old T-bone.
19:48 All right.
19:49 Amen.
19:50 So that was, so probably that is honestly because basically my sister wouldn't finish
19:55 her steak.
19:56 I'd get her leftovers, my grandma wouldn't finish her steak.
19:59 I'd get her leftovers.
20:00 It was kind of fantastic, but that's probably the best just for sentimental.
20:06 Okay.
20:07 Very good.
20:08 I'm going to give a shout out to the beef sponsor of undaunted life at this point, Primal
20:11 Beef guys.
20:12 I'm, I'm dead serious.
20:13 This isn't an ad I'm just saying.
20:15 Like I've tried a bunch of different samples from like some of the other meat delivery
20:19 companies and some of them are fine.
20:21 But part of the problem was is they would, they're sourcing it from different farms and
20:24 so you can get the same box two months in a row and the meat's going to be completely
20:27 different.
20:28 But, you know, primal beef, like some of the best steaks and the first brisket I ever
20:32 made was a primal beef brisket so we made that man for dude, it took me freaking years
20:38 before I was comfortable like taking on a brisket just because I was like, man, I don't
20:41 want to mess it up.
20:42 And, but when you get sent a brisket for free, it's like, all right, I'm playing with house
20:45 money right now.
20:46 So I'm putting it all on red and so that we made it happen, but did not mess it up.
20:50 It was good with my family.
20:51 My man.
20:52 Well, hey, you, you gave me a lot of good advice on that and then shout out to meet Mitch.
20:55 He'll, he'll be featured prominently here in a second.
20:58 I've got a couple of honorable mention, it's my freaking table, bro.
21:02 I bought the table.
21:03 All right.
21:04 So here are the honorable mentions.
21:05 They'll be quick.
21:06 And steak houses, so that is built for people like me because I, the majority of my calorie
21:12 consumption is meat.
21:13 And so this was like the fourth or fifth time I went.
21:15 I literally went and took a potty break and I didn't need to go pee.
21:20 I'll just say that much.
21:21 And then came back to the table and kept eating.
21:22 And so I cleared room to come back so that I could eat more red meat.
21:25 So that's one story.
21:26 Really, really enjoyed that second story.
21:28 The first deer kill of my life in my mid twenties, a wind shot, a deer it snowed that morning.
21:36 And so got a deer.
21:37 This is the first time shooting a deer, cleaning a deer.
21:39 And we literally took the back strap from that buck.
21:42 And that's what we had for lunch.
21:45 And when the guy put it on the grill, like it, the, the meat's obviously still warm.
21:49 It was like, even like, you know, kind of spazzoming a little bit.
21:51 Cause I mean, we, this, this animal had just died.
21:53 We took it off.
21:54 And that's what we had for lunch.
21:55 But great.
21:56 He's vegan, buddy.
21:57 Make that.
21:58 Yeah.
21:59 No.
22:00 He was not invited.
22:01 But my favorite meat story ever.
22:02 So I had this weird job back in 2012, I worked in the MLB fan cave.
22:06 And so they had like 22,000 people apply.
22:09 And you know, you had to be the super fan and you had to create content, you had to
22:12 watch every single game for the entire season.
22:14 And so I was one of the nine, nine people that was selected to go there.
22:17 So a bunch of players, you know, current players and all stars and legends and hall
22:21 famers and celebrities would come by and we would shoot content with them.
22:24 Well, that would usually coincide with who was in town to either play the Yankees or
22:27 the Mets.
22:28 And so the Royals are in town to play the Yankees.
22:31 And so a bunch of the Royals players at the time came by.
22:33 I remember Jeff right core came by Billy Butler came by and then George Brett came by.
22:38 Now George Brett walks in and he owns the room immediately.
22:43 We're in this big studio, a bunch of people on there and he just owns the room.
22:46 Big personality could not have been a nicer guy.
22:49 So he and I started striking up a conversation me and George Brett and we're just sitting
22:52 there chatting, chatting baseball and all that.
22:54 And then we started chatting about barbecue because obviously Kansas City Royals, you
22:56 know, he's from Kansas City, you know, Kansas City, barbecue, probably the best barbecue
23:00 of any particular place.
23:01 That's at least where I would put my, my stake in the ground.
23:04 And he goes, Hey, have y'all, y'all had any good barbecue in the city yet?
23:07 And I go, no, we, we haven't had any.
23:10 And the look on George Brett's face is like, wait, what?
23:14 True concern, like he's like, wait a minute, wait a minute.
23:18 Just so I'm clear, you've been in New York City for months and you have not found a good
23:22 barbecue spot.
23:23 I'm like, no, George Brett, I haven't found a good barbecue spot yet and he stops.
23:28 He's silent for a second, you can tell he's kind of calculating and then he goes, okay,
23:32 cool.
23:33 I'll fix that.
23:34 And I'm like, I don't know what that means, but okay, George Brett.
23:37 And so I shake his hand and he leaves and it's a great thing.
23:39 A week later, I get an email from George Brett and it's a YouTube link.
23:45 And I'm like, I think I'm getting catfish, but I'm clicking on it just in case.
23:48 So I click on it and it's him in Kansas City with a buddy named Mitch Benjamin, otherwise
23:53 known as meat, Mitch, and they are making ribs and burn ends.
23:57 They're like, man, you know, George Brett's like, man, I had such a great time at the
24:00 MLB fan cave.
24:01 You guys, because it was me and eight other cave dwellers is what they called us.
24:05 And it's like, y'all are so nice to us.
24:06 And I was just, when you told me, Kyle, that you had not had any good barbecue when you
24:11 were in, since you had been in New York, I found that to just be an absolute crime.
24:15 And so we're making up all these racks of ribs and these burnt ends.
24:18 We're sending them up to you.
24:20 So be looking out for another email with instructions.
24:22 And I am like, flabbergasted, like what?
24:26 Lo and behold, I get an email that says, this is when the ribs and burn ends are going to
24:31 be delivered.
24:33 All the barbecue sauce will be in a separate thing.
24:35 And at the time, I didn't know this, but this is meat, Mitch's barbecue sauce.
24:37 I think he's won the world championships of barbecue sauce twice with this sauce is
24:41 wamp sauce.
24:42 So shout out to meat, Mitch and the wamp sauce.
24:44 And that would have been enough, but you get a box in New York, you got these ribs.
24:48 He's got dry ass and he goes around the corner from the studio is this restaurant.
24:53 I've already contacted them, they're not open right now, but just go around to the back
24:57 door, back door, knock on the door, a guy named Vinny or whatever is going to open the door
25:00 for you.
25:01 They're going to have the oven ready to go.
25:03 They're going to warm up the ribs for you.
25:05 So just make sure you leave them in the foil and, you know, we'll take care of business.
25:08 So you guys can have Kansas City ribs sitting there in the middle of Manhattan.
25:11 Dude, I was like, like, what, what are you talking about that?
25:14 I was like, you're going to tell me the best barbecues in New York City, because I was
25:17 about to be, I was about to be like, defended, crap on that.
25:20 The answer is no.
25:21 Do you then fly it in from Kansas City fluid in from, I mean, we're talking like overnighted
25:26 in dry ice, but again, at any point, had he stopped the train of hospitality, it would
25:32 have been fine.
25:33 We would have figured out a way to warm them up.
25:34 We like rednecks, we probably would have put it in the, you know, microwave or something
25:37 like that.
25:38 But he's like, no, he went, this is a Hall of Famer.
25:42 This is a very well off man.
25:44 This is a guy that's very highly respected and a bunch of strangers like he made sure
25:48 to do this with.
25:50 I mean, I thought the story was over, but I remembered something.
25:51 So that year, the all-star game was in Kansas City.
25:55 So we go with Major League Baseball.
25:56 We're at the all-star game.
25:58 But the night before is the home run derby.
26:00 And so we're out in left field and, you know, kind of the area where a lot of the home run
26:03 balls are coming and everything like that.
26:05 And so who walks into our section?
26:07 George Brett and meet Mitch.
26:08 So I get to meet Mitch Benjamin for the first time.
26:10 It's like, oh, hugs and all that.
26:11 I can't believe you sent ribs.
26:12 They're so great, blah, blah.
26:13 And George like, hey, Kyle, great to see you again.
26:15 All right, man.
26:16 Enjoy yourself.
26:17 10 minutes later, platters of Kansas City ribs and barbecue came courtesy of meet Mitch
26:23 and George Brett.
26:24 He didn't say they were coming.
26:26 They just showed up in our section.
26:27 Man, I've been to Kansas City a couple of times and I've gone to meet Mitch as, you know,
26:32 I picked up barbecue sauce when I was there.
26:33 But I actually took some people from work.
26:35 They were like, they went to go to this other barbecue place and I was like, no, you guys
26:38 tried to meet Mitch and they're like, no, I took him over there.
26:40 And they were like, dude, how do we not know about this place?
26:43 I was like, it's good.
26:44 And you, so he opened his first restaurant there called Char Bar and then he opened up
26:48 one here recently where it's just meet Mitch.
26:50 So Char Bar's more sit down on beyonds, but you're, you know, you're getting ribs and
26:54 burn ins, but there's also some really cool, you know, drinks and appetizers.
26:57 But meet Mitch, the actual meet Mitch restaurant, that is, you know, metal tray butcher paper,
27:02 how many pounds of this you want, you know, quarter pound of this camp around that.
27:05 And so shout out if you're ever in Kansas City.
27:07 I know what you're torturing me dinner is coming.
27:09 It's not going to be.
27:10 It's not your brisket though.
27:11 It's not my brisket. Yeah, you know what, but I'm sorry, maybe I should have done this
27:16 towards the end of this episode, but no, that's, that story is unbelievable.
27:19 And I don't doubt for a, for a second that the meal that you ate in New York was like
27:25 life changing, but the story, yeah, like, oh, yeah, meat could have been terrible and
27:29 I would have been like, these are the best roots of every eating like that's an unbelievable
27:33 bread ribs, unbelievable story.
27:35 Yeah.
27:36 I mean, cause you got to think that year I met, I mean, hundreds of current players, like,
27:40 you know, but it was just such a unique thing.
27:42 There's so few things like that where you could tell that somebody actually gave a crap
27:46 because some people are like, okay, I need to turn on the charm because cameras are rolling
27:49 and these, these people are going to be in these videos and I don't want to come off
27:52 looking like a [inaudible].
27:53 The only [inaudible] we met all year was Brandon Phillips.
27:54 He's an absolutely horrible, reprehensible, terrible human being.
27:59 You know what?
28:00 I'm calling Brandon Phillips out right now.
28:01 This is what Brandon Phillips said.
28:02 I straight up told MLB.
28:03 I was like, if any of these two guys come to the studio, make sure I'm not here because
28:06 I'm going to have a problem with it.
28:07 Brandon Phillips, Nigel Morgan.
28:08 I don't want to see those guys.
28:10 One was, is because Brandon Phillips got into a little kerfuffle with Yachty Ermalina.
28:15 It ended up ending the career of Jason LaRue because there was a big fight between the
28:20 Reds and the Cardinals and Johnny Quato ended up kicking Jason LaRue in the head with his
28:24 spikes.
28:25 He got such a bad concussion.
28:26 It ended his career and it started with Brandon Phillips, but Brandon Phillips is on the dock
28:30 to come.
28:31 It's like, I'm a professional.
28:32 This is my job.
28:33 You know, I'll just, you know, whatever, but he sees that I'm wearing cardinal stuff and
28:36 then he sees that I'm wearing a Yachty Ermalina jersey, which I wore on purpose, hoping that
28:39 he would say something a little bit, but then he, yeah, you know, just kind of instigating
28:44 a little bit.
28:45 And then he goes, Oh man, I'm going to rip that jersey off and wipe my butt with it.
28:49 And I was like, okay, all right, this is like right when he walks in.
28:53 So I'm like, I can't be around this guy.
28:55 I got to be on other parts of the studio and luckily I wasn't going to be in the video
28:58 with him.
28:59 It was going to be the two female cave dwellers.
29:01 Well, Brandon Phillips proceeds to, because it was supposed to be kind of a puffed piece
29:06 thing.
29:07 And the girls are like, Hey, Brandon, you have a lot of followers on Twitter and, you know,
29:09 we're building our Twitter profiles and things like that.
29:12 You know, what do you think that we should do to, you know, kind of get the same followership
29:15 and engagement that you do.
29:16 And he goes, show them your tits.
29:18 Sorry.
29:19 Anyone who's like watching that.
29:20 This is a man's podcast.
29:21 This is yeah.
29:22 It's a man's podcast.
29:23 So he goes, show him your tits.
29:24 And he thought it was hilarious and I heard it and I literally walked over to the MLB executive.
29:29 I'm like, if he doesn't get out of here right now, I'm going to flip out.
29:32 I'm going to absolutely flip out.
29:34 I cannot believe that y'all are just letting the cameras roll after you said that to these
29:38 two girls.
29:39 So unbelievably disrespectful, get him the hell out of here.
29:42 So he was the biggest [inaudible] that we had, you know, the entire time that we met.
29:47 But when you see someone that takes extra effort to remember people other than themselves,
29:51 another example that year was a Miguel Cabrera.
29:53 So Miguel Cabrera, one of the best players of this generation.
29:57 You could put him.
29:58 He's probably in the top 50 best players of baseball ever, argument for top 25, whatever.
30:03 This was the year he hit for the triple crown case of the triple crown hadn't been done.
30:06 So for non baseball fans, that's where you have in your league, the highest batting average,
30:11 most home runs and most RBIs all in the same season.
30:13 And it hadn't happened for like, it's mental 40 years or something like that before that.
30:17 Yeah.
30:18 And so this is a year that Miguel Cabrera did it.
30:20 So Miguel Cabrera comes in early in the season and he comes and he does his video, this goofy
30:25 video that we have him do and he meets all of us.
30:26 And this is Miguel Cabrera.
30:27 Like he literally meets people all the time, you know, like he's just that guy.
30:31 Well, then fast forward to the all-star game.
30:34 We all see him at all-star press day and he comes up to us and he's like, oh, Kyle, what's
30:38 up?
30:39 Thank cave.
30:40 And I'm like, this is really weird.
30:41 Like this guy's on an absolute heater.
30:42 Well, fast forward to the World Series that year.
30:44 The Cardinals blew a three one lead in the NLCS.
30:47 So I'm pretty sad that the Giants came back here.
30:49 We are going to the World Series and I can't see my Cardinals, but the World Series that
30:52 year was a Detroit Tigers who who Miguel Cabrera played for versus the San Francisco Giants.
30:57 And so we get to the World Series and we go to media day for the World Series.
31:00 We see Miguel Cabrera.
31:01 And what does he do?
31:02 I mean, in the middle of answering a question from another person goes, oh, Kyle, fan cave,
31:07 what's up?
31:08 And I'm just like, bro, you just hit for the triple crown and this is game three of the
31:11 World Series.
31:12 Why are you talking to me?
31:14 Like so it's just like it's cool to see guys like that that don't have to go out of their
31:18 way to make you feel special, especially because it's like, I'm not a kid.
31:21 Like I don't have cancer.
31:22 Like I'm not like a, you know, someone that you have to, you know, wear an arm band and
31:26 represent it.
31:27 Hey, I'm going to hit a home run for you.
31:28 I'm just a dude doing a job and you go out of your way to make me feel special.
31:31 It's like, dude, shout out, Miguel Cabrera screw Brandon Phillips forever.
31:35 I'm not bitter.
31:36 I'm not bitter.
31:37 Y'all judge me all you want to kind of have that same story with Bob Stoops.
31:41 Okay.
31:42 Well, we're in story time of the show.
31:43 So let's talk about Bob Stoops.
31:45 Bob, my dad was doing a golf tournament with a golf event with Reggie White and Keith
31:49 Jackson.
31:50 I think it was like 17 at the time, uh, I have alopecia.
31:52 So that's why I don't have any hair.
31:54 I've been bald since I was like 14 years old.
31:56 And so, um, my job basically at this thing is just to pick up players and bring them to
32:00 this golf tournament.
32:01 And so finally get down and doing that, they get the scramble going and Bob Stoops comes
32:07 over and starts talking to me, just talk to me for like 45 minutes, ask me a lot about
32:11 myself and everything.
32:12 I was like, man, Bob Stoops is like the nicest guy I ever met.
32:15 And then I hear other people.
32:16 They'll be like, man, Bob Stoops was like not a nice guy.
32:18 And I was like, dude, I have a different experience.
32:20 This guy was really nice.
32:21 And like, the other guy popped up and he was like, yeah, like Bob Stoops will go after
32:26 each game and go sit at like, uh, at Sooners Cancer Ward with kids, the children's hospital,
32:32 the children's hospital with cancer kids and just hang out with him and like he would make
32:35 players do it.
32:36 He would do it.
32:37 No cameras.
32:38 No, no cameras.
32:39 No, nothing.
32:40 And then I thought about it.
32:41 And I was like, [inaudible].
32:42 He thought.
32:43 Oh, man.
32:44 Yeah.
32:45 I was like, uh, bro, talk to me because I look like I didn't do, I didn't sense the twist
32:49 at the end there.
32:50 I didn't sense it until like almost like 20 years later, man.
32:53 And I was like, but I heard that you might be a [inaudible], but he just thought you were
32:57 a cancer.
32:58 Yes.
32:59 Yeah.
33:00 He was dead the whole time.
33:01 He's like, oh, man, he's probably like, oh, he's going to watch this and be like that.
33:10 Dude, I'll pay share.
33:11 Yeah.
33:12 I wasted 45 minutes of my time.
33:13 No, he's not going to be like, oh, man, good for Ryan.
33:15 He's still that.
33:18 That is fantastic.
33:19 Well, guys, we do get paid by the verse.
33:20 So we probably need to get back into acts 10 here.
33:23 So I don't know who read last.
33:24 So whoever wants to pick this up, Winkler, you're getting pointed out.
33:27 So it's going to be you.
33:28 Let's hit 17 through 33.
33:30 Now, while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might
33:36 mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius having made inquiry for Simon's house stood
33:41 at the gate and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.
33:46 And while Peter was pondering the vision, the spirit said to him, behold, three men are
33:51 looking for you, rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation for I have sent them.
33:58 And Peter went down to the man and said, I am the one you are looking for.
34:02 What is the reason for your coming?
34:03 And they said Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man who is well spoken of
34:08 by the whole Jewish nation was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his
34:14 house and to hear what you have to say.
34:17 So he invited them in to be his guests.
34:20 The next day he rose and went away with them.
34:22 And some of the brothers from Japa accompanied him.
34:26 And on the following day, they entered Caesarea.
34:29 Cornelius was expecting them and called together his relatives and close friends.
34:33 When Peter entered, Cornelius met them and fell down to his feet and worshiped him.
34:38 But Peter lifted him up saying, stand up, I too am a man.
34:42 And he talked with him.
34:43 He went in and found many persons gathered.
34:46 And he said to them, you yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with
34:52 or to visit anyone of another nation.
34:55 But God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.
35:00 So when I was sent for, I came without objection.
35:03 I asked then why you sent for me.
35:06 And Cornelius said four days ago about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth
35:11 hour and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing and said, Cornelius your prayer
35:16 has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.
35:20 Send therefore to Japa and ask for Simon who is called Peter.
35:24 He is lodging in the house of Simon at Tanner by the sea.
35:28 So I sent for you at once and you have been kind enough to come.
35:31 Now therefore, we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded
35:37 by the Lord.
35:39 So a very important section there.
35:41 If we can go back to verse 23, Ryan, you mentioned this actually earlier on this episode.
35:46 So he invited them in to be his guests.
35:48 This seems like a throwaway line, but it is so, so unbelievably important because Jews
35:52 at this time did not welcome Gentiles into their home.
35:56 So just by virtue of the fact that he extended an invitation, he certainly extended way more
35:59 than that as well.
36:01 Yeah.
36:02 Great point, Kyle.
36:03 You nailed it.
36:04 Let's move on.
36:05 So all right.
36:06 I'll move on to my next point.
36:07 You freaking jerks.
36:08 Where Peter lifted him up saying stand up, I am to a man like most of us, and I would
36:15 certainly include myself in that the temptation for hero worship for people that, you know,
36:20 are like slobbering on you or like treating you like you're different.
36:25 It's got to be enticing.
36:26 And I love what what Joby has said about this before because, you know, obviously he runs
36:30 a big church.
36:31 He's written two fantastic books.
36:32 He's got a third one coming out this year.
36:35 And, you know, his profile is really exploding and expanded, but not because he's buying
36:39 ads on Instagram and not because he's, you know, trying to, you know, go speak it all
36:43 the right conferences.
36:44 So more people will take selfies with him like he's just a dude that's actually being
36:47 a pastor that just happens to be doing a really good job.
36:50 And God is, you know, showing favor to him and his ministry.
36:53 So when people come up to him and start, you know, heaping praise upon him, he's very
36:59 big about just saying, Hey, thank you so much for saying that as opposed to being like,
37:03 man, you're right.
37:04 I am awesome.
37:05 Like this is incredible.
37:06 And he tries to be like, I'm just a dude.
37:09 I'm just a dude.
37:10 I'm just a dude.
37:11 And guess what?
37:12 After he preaches on Sunday, he spends time with the family drives out to the retreat center
37:16 that they have for church of 11 22 and he wakes up in a, in a, in goes to a deer blind in
37:21 the dark on Monday morning and he sits there with his Bible app open and he says, God,
37:25 they're your sheep.
37:26 I'm just a shepherd.
37:27 What do you want to say to your sheep?
37:28 It's pretty awesome.
37:29 That's, that's humility right there.
37:31 So I've totally stolen that people are giving me compliments about the show or about something
37:35 that I've done, a speech that I've done and it's like, man, thank you so much for saying
37:38 that.
37:39 And the other thing that I try to do whenever people, you know, come up to me, because I've
37:43 even done some zoom calls here really soon, people like, dude, I'm like, starstruck to
37:46 even talk to you.
37:47 I'm like, man, you can stop with all that.
37:48 I'm going to turn my camera off so you don't, so you can't look at me just like being goofy,
37:52 but I'll ask them.
37:53 And I always say this, I try to ask six questions about the other person before I will answer
37:56 one about myself.
37:57 And so it's like, dude, how, you know, if they come to one of my speeches, like, dude, you
38:01 know, who brought you here?
38:02 Did you, did you come by yourself or were you invited?
38:04 Oh, sir.
38:05 Are you from around this area?
38:06 Okay.
38:07 Well, you know, what about the talk was even interesting for, for you to want to show up?
38:10 Do you go to this church or do you go?
38:11 You just kind of like, cause I'm showing genuine interest in them.
38:15 I have to listen to their answers so that I can formulate my next question.
38:19 But that's a good thing that Peter is showing us how to do here.
38:21 And he's modeling it.
38:22 You do that to me.
38:23 The first time I met you in ABF.
38:24 Did I?
38:25 Yeah.
38:26 You just kept asking me questions.
38:27 But I had to say moment when, you know, a couple of weeks back, we had Chandler on.
38:31 And so I got up here.
38:32 I was the first one up and Chandler was sitting, I think right where Winkler was sitting.
38:37 No, I had to sit there.
38:39 He was just sitting there, but um, he, I go, man, this is on my bucket list.
38:43 He's like, you need a new bucket list, bro.
38:46 I was like, I was like, and then this jerk like throws me under the bus later that night,
38:51 or was it my wife?
38:52 I don't know who was.
38:53 Yeah, it was me.
38:54 Yeah, it was you.
38:55 Yeah, he goes, yeah, that guy didn't like you.
38:57 Yeah.
38:58 We're all hanging out.
38:59 I'm like, Chandler, I'm like, yeah, the dude over there.
39:00 He didn't like you.
39:01 He was not a fan.
39:02 He had to be converted into being a fan.
39:04 And you were just like, Kyle, why did you say that?
39:06 Because you always get on me.
39:07 You're like, try not to fight with them the first 20 minutes you meet them.
39:10 Yeah.
39:11 I mean, that's what you did with Joby.
39:12 And it's like, God, you can't take you fricking anywhere, can I?
39:14 Well, but it can kind of feed the monster, right?
39:16 Like this guy, you know, you got Chandler sitting here and he's all humble.
39:19 And it's like, oh, no, I like you even more.
39:21 Like, right?
39:22 You're who you need to be later and actually see like, Herod using compliments for his
39:27 own political and we see what we see what happens when you do that.
39:31 Spoiler alert.
39:32 No, I'm just kidding.
39:33 So I think the one of the other things that Joby talks about is I like the, you know,
39:40 the thank you is great and all that's necessary.
39:45 Sometimes we'll have somebody.
39:46 It's like, okay, we'll hold man.
39:48 That was amazing.
39:49 The speech.
39:50 You know, that was amazing.
39:51 John is like, you know, that was not me.
39:53 That was just a Holy Spirit working through me, you know, and, and it's almost a false
39:57 humility.
39:58 Yeah.
39:59 And I also, it's weird and I would also say, I mean, I think it's, it's almost a disservice.
40:06 I mean, when people are coming up to pay you a compliment on something that you've done,
40:11 and then you're just like, you know what, while all credit does go to God, let's be
40:15 clear, for you to verbalize, well, all credit goes to God here.
40:18 I mean, it's not me at all.
40:20 It's the Holy Spirit speaking through me on the other side of that coin is this person
40:25 who just complimented you and they're going, man, when is the Holy Spirit going to do something
40:30 like that for me?
40:31 Yeah.
40:32 Yeah.
40:33 Or, or they start looking at their gifts because gifts are not a difference in their level
40:37 and important.
40:38 They're difference in their level of sexy.
40:39 And so if you have the gift of like singing or something like that, that's a sexy skill,
40:43 but then you have other people that have the gift of organization.
40:46 And so the fact that there were even chairs in that room for y'all to sit in, like during
40:50 that service, thanks somebody who's fricking organized and can like look at a building
40:55 and know exactly how many chairs need to be in a row, the logistics person, those types
40:58 of people.
40:59 And so yeah, when you, when you're up on stage that, that's what I tell people all the time,
41:02 I'm like, don't treat me any different just because I'm up on stage with the microphone
41:06 on my face wearing all black like that doesn't make me different.
41:08 That's just my job.
41:09 It's like your job is very, very important and you were put in a particular place at
41:12 a particular time to do a particular thing for the mission of God's work here on this
41:16 planet.
41:17 My job just happens to be a little bit different.
41:19 The fact that you tune into me on your phone doesn't make me more special than you.
41:22 Okay.
41:23 And like that's just a very important thing for people.
41:25 But you know, it also comes to us and Ryan, I'll get you in here just a second, but also
41:30 it's incumbent upon us to not worship other people as well, where we build these preachers
41:35 up in our minds or we build these singers up in our minds or these athletes or whatever.
41:39 And then when they're not exactly as we expect them to be, we're disappointed or that was
41:44 the thing I realized working with Major League Baseball is like, Oh, mostly these guys are
41:46 just dudes.
41:47 These are dudes with an unbelievable skill set and they make a ridiculous amount of
41:51 money to play a child's game.
41:53 But they're just dudes.
41:54 A lot of the guys would come hang out like they would play and then we would watch all
41:59 the games.
42:00 And so the West Coast games didn't start until 10 o'clock Eastern.
42:03 So guys would get done playing the Mets or the Yankees.
42:05 And then like the entire bullpen would come hang out the fan cave because it was the only
42:09 place where there wouldn't be fans where they didn't have to worry about people taking pictures
42:12 or asking for autographs because we weren't allowed to do that there.
42:15 So they would just come and chill.
42:16 We'd order pizza and you know, just kind of hang out.
42:18 And so just treat people like they are, which is just people.
42:21 They may have a unique job, but they're just people.
42:23 And that's a great point.
42:24 Cause I just want to bring up like we treat these people, we put them up on a pedestal,
42:27 but they're not going to be perfect.
42:28 Yeah.
42:29 And when they fall and when they fall, you can't let your salvation go with it.
42:33 So you've got to know that you got to be securing your salvation and who your first love is,
42:37 which is Christ.
42:38 And then these people are just there to hopefully disciple you along the way.
42:42 So for sure.
42:43 For sure.
42:44 Let's keep back 10 rolling.
42:45 So Ryan, I think you are up.
42:47 Let's do 30, 34 through 43.
42:51 Okay.
42:53 So Peter opened his mouth and said, truly, I understand that the, that God shows no partiality,
42:59 but in every nation, anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
43:04 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ,
43:09 he is Lord of all, you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from
43:15 Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed, how God anointed Jesus in the Azeroth with
43:20 the Holy Spirit and with power.
43:23 He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil for God was with
43:27 him.
43:28 And we are witnesses of all that.
43:30 He did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.
43:34 They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day
43:38 and made him to appear, not to all the people, but to those of us who had been chosen by
43:44 God's as a witness who ate and drank with him and who rose after he rose from the dead.
43:50 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is one, he is the one
43:56 appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead, to him, all the prophets bear
44:01 witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.
44:06 Okay.
44:07 So we don't, we don't have all the time in the world to really dig into this, but this
44:10 section, I'll admit was a little bit confusing for me.
44:14 So when you go back to verse 34, so Peter opened his mouth and said, truly, I understand
44:18 that God shows no partiality.
44:21 And then in the margins I wrote, except to his elect, or what about the Israelites?
44:26 But in literally later on in verse 41, not to all the people, but to us who had been chosen
44:33 by God as witnesses.
44:35 And so inherently in these comments, and even in just the narrative of the Old Testament
44:39 and up to this point, as we see in the New Testament, it seems very clearly that God
44:44 does show partiality.
44:45 So I'm not trying to be heretical and say, well, I am on Peter.
44:48 He's talking out of both sides of his mouth here, but it just was confusing to me.
44:53 So he shows no partiality, partiality is because the Jews were the chosen people.
45:00 And so if you were, if you were not a Jew, the Jews viewed you as somebody who was unclean
45:06 and that God would never touch.
45:08 And so now that he's bringing Gentiles in shows that he is, he shows no partiality.
45:14 And so when he says it, he goes, truly understand that God shows no partiality.
45:18 But in every nation, every nation, anyone who fears him and does what is right, does what
45:24 is right and is acceptable to him.
45:27 See, I take this a different, I mean, and maybe this is what you meant.
45:31 So I'm looking at it when he says he shows no partiality.
45:35 I think he's talking about his judgment.
45:37 I don't know if he's because to me, it's not like why chose Israel and then I changed
45:42 my mind and now the Gentiles are in.
45:45 To me, when they talk about not showing partiality, it's I show no partiality in my judgment.
45:50 Essentially God, God judges everyone the exact same way that his justice is universal.
45:57 Yeah, his justice, his justice is universal, but his righteousness isn't expand.
46:03 I don't understand.
46:04 So like this is truly like, so, so you talk about the elect, okay?
46:11 Really I understand that God has shows no partiality, you're talking about his judgment.
46:15 So he's going to judge sinners no matter what.
46:18 So what happened is through Christ, he, Christ is a propitiation of our sin.
46:24 So the Jews would think that Christ and the Messiah or the second coming that Isaiah talks
46:31 about is only for the Jews, but it's not true.
46:35 He's for the world, just like John 3 16, for God so loved the world, he gave his only son.
46:40 And so the world is everybody outside the Jews, Gentiles are the world.
46:46 Because the Jews viewed themselves as a chosen people is still not making any sense.
46:55 I get your point, but that it's not quite landed with with how you know Gentiles are
47:04 the world.
47:05 They're right.
47:06 They're everything outside the Jews.
47:07 So the Jews viewed, so Peter would have viewed Gentiles as unclean that God was never going
47:12 to save them.
47:13 Right.
47:14 So you're looking at this in a Calvinist lens and you shouldn't look at it in a Calvinist
47:17 lens.
47:18 You should look at it as Peter is a Jew who believes everything outside of Judaism is unclean.
47:24 But he's saying God shows no partiality, so God shows no partiality based upon Jew and
47:31 Gentile anymore.
47:32 Not anymore.
47:33 Again, I would say, I don't think it's in any more statement because I would say, does
47:37 God change?
47:38 True Christ.
47:39 God doesn't change, but the righteousness was done like so we look back at Abraham and
47:44 we look back at everybody.
47:45 They were saved by their belief.
47:47 Okay.
47:48 So now we have Christ Jesus who is now the propitiation of our sins.
47:52 So not only he didn't just die for the Jews, even though throughout the Old Testament, Messiah
47:57 was there for the Jews.
47:59 And so that's what was said to them.
48:02 And so now what he's saying now is that the Messiah is for everyone.
48:05 That's where John 3 16 comes in that for God's love the world, he gave his only son.
48:09 He gave his son for not only the Jews, but the Gentiles as well.
48:13 Yeah.
48:14 So I'm, I'm, I'm tracking with, with Ryan here, you know, I'm, I'm looking at two different
48:18 translations of 34, one saying Peter, Peter says, of a truth I perceive, which is kind
48:24 of like I'm, I'm understanding differently, right?
48:27 He's perceiving.
48:28 And then this other one says, I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism,
48:34 right?
48:35 So it's like Peter's awareness of what God's plan now is, right?
48:40 Like it's, okay, that makes sense.
48:43 Like the Messiah isn't just for the Jews.
48:45 So like if you, if you go back and look at who they're preaching to him, we'll even go
48:49 in this and other chapters, but they go and preach to the Jews.
48:53 And then you're going to see in the other chapters that while they're preaching to the
48:55 Jews, there's the Greeks that start listening and they start, God starts opening their eyes
49:00 to what they're hearing.
49:02 And so they become believers.
49:03 And so basically what God is saying here is that we always view the Gentiles as unclean.
49:08 They are no longer unclean.
49:09 I show no partiality.
49:10 It's almost kind of like he needs to justify like I'm this, like I'm a Jewish guy in Cornelius's
49:17 house and they're all going to, and I need to start this conversation by going, okay,
49:21 so here's why I'm here.
49:22 The other thing is too is now when we kind of miss this, when we went back, we didn't
49:27 go to in depth on Peter's dream.
49:30 But in Peter's dream, it's showing that Christ gets rid of, or Christ pretty much is a perpetuation
49:35 for ceremonial law.
49:37 God's moral law is still there.
49:38 The 10 commandments are still there because that is God's true nature.
49:42 That is, that is where God stands.
49:44 But the ceremonial law, which clearated uncleanliness, which the Gentiles would have been viewed
49:48 as uncleanly because they didn't follow those laws, well, they don't need to anymore because
49:52 the Jews don't need to anymore because of Christ.
49:55 And now Christ has opened up for them to have a way to the father.
49:59 So yours, would it be fair to say that you're saying the statement about God showing no
50:03 partiality stops short of election?
50:06 I mean, I don't view, to be honest, I didn't sit here and view election and want to talk
50:12 election when I was making my notes here.
50:15 But I mean, this is something we can go and talk back further, not like other times.
50:19 We've never talked about it before.
50:22 So let's peel off the band.
50:23 But I mean, like, I wasn't thinking election when I'm reading this.
50:26 But like, you know, God does chose, he chose certain people that were going to be there.
50:31 Christ chose who he was going to talk to.
50:33 So the main subject of this is now the Gentiles are being etched into the tree.
50:39 That's what the main subject is isn't like, Hey, I've elected these Gentiles.
50:43 These are the only Gentiles I'm going to elect.
50:45 Does election play a process?
50:47 In my mind, yes, it does, you know, later on, but that's not the point he's trying to make
50:50 right now.
50:51 That's why I'm asking if you think this statement stops short of the discussion of election
50:55 because obviously within now that, okay, great.
50:58 We bridge the gap between Jew and Gentile bridge gapped for forever because the propitiation
51:02 of our sin debt via Jesus on the cross, but God certainly, at least in Calvinist theology
51:07 in parlance does show partiality because he only is going to say the people he wants.
51:12 Well, he shows partiality anyways, because if whether you believe him or not, he's not
51:15 going to save you.
51:16 So if I'm going to go off of your, your thought of free will, well, he's still showing partiality
51:21 because you're using your free will not to believe in him.
51:24 And so is that really wrong?
51:25 Is he showing partiality because you choose not to believe in him?
51:28 So he's not going to let you into heaven.
51:30 You know, like you could still make a case for partiality there.
51:34 The, the case that I'm making is partiality, there's like partiality before it even comes
51:39 to my decision because a Calvinist would say, well, no, you don't decide you're, you're
51:43 either elected, you like God for new.
51:46 And that's the problem with most of the hang up with the count of theology is this.
51:49 There's a difference between foreknowledge and forcing of something.
51:52 Did God foresee and foreknow that when he sent Christ, he was going to save Gentiles?
51:57 Yes.
51:58 I believe that.
51:59 I believe it was predestined.
52:00 And that's what you want to hear.
52:01 I think that the passage and this, the specifics of this passage here has nothing to do about
52:05 predestination and everything to show how Gentiles are being etched in to God's promise.
52:11 What about verse 35?
52:14 But in every nation, anyone who fears him and does what his right is acceptable.
52:17 So every nation, so what was the Jewish people?
52:20 What were the Jews?
52:21 Were they a nation?
52:22 Yes or no?
52:24 At that time?
52:25 Yes.
52:26 No.
52:27 Jews were a nation.
52:28 Not at that time.
52:29 Yes, they were.
52:30 They were conquered by the Romans.
52:31 Well, they were conquered by the Romans, but they were still their own nation.
52:33 And so they viewed themselves as a nation.
52:35 They still lived under a theocracy.
52:36 They had the Sadducees.
52:37 They were.
52:38 They had the Pharisees.
52:39 They were a people.
52:40 But there was not a Jewish nation.
52:41 But the Jewish nation.
52:42 They may not be a nation in the fact that they had a piece of land and were a nation.
52:47 They viewed themselves as a nation and everything outside of their nation was Gentile.
52:53 And so what he's saying is, Jews are just not the, they're not the only nation anymore.
52:59 I am now opening this up to all nations.
53:02 God has nothing to do with election.
53:04 You sure?
53:06 I didn't read it and want to go into a Calvinist argument with you guys on this.
53:11 And so I was not prepared.
53:13 You're always ready.
53:14 But I try to get you when you're not prepared.
53:16 It's more fun.
53:17 You always try to give you an hour prepared and then you sit me with all the Armenian guys.
53:20 No, I don't think anybody would put their self in that cap, but you were giving you an
53:23 opportunity to learn how to calm yourself and just have a discussion with people that
53:27 just having a discussion.
53:28 Remember last time we had a discussion like this, you like powdered and ran and like
53:31 he said.
53:32 Yeah.
53:33 And then you're like, I don't want to go back.
53:34 I quit the forging table.
53:35 I almost did.
53:36 Yeah.
53:37 I don't want, I don't want to redirect.
53:38 That was me.
53:39 I don't want to redirect everybody's ire here, but I agree.
53:42 I read it the same way.
53:43 The right thing.
53:44 Oh, how dare you.
53:45 I get out of here.
53:46 It's not a cabinet.
53:47 So I quit the forging table, but I don't want to, I don't want to like bury the headline
53:52 here.
53:53 Cause when I'm reading this, I'm picturing Cornelius and his family and they're listening to Peter
53:59 recount his, you know, he's telling his story of what he witnessed.
54:04 And can you imagine like the jaws in that room just being on the ground?
54:08 Yeah.
54:09 I'm, I mean, I'm tracking with what you're saying.
54:11 I'm just, you know, you just like to give me a hard time.
54:14 I do.
54:15 It's all good.
54:16 I mean, I like to get me a word.
54:17 Hold on.
54:18 I should say I'm tracking with what you're saying now, basically it's more like as Dagan
54:21 was putting it.
54:22 It's more like Peter coming to this realization, not necessarily that he is speaking for God.
54:27 It's more of a, but he is speaking for God, but, but he's, but he's, he's, he's explaining.
54:34 Hey, I'm here.
54:35 Right.
54:36 Because, because I now realize that you were part of God's plan of why Jesus came and then
54:41 let me tell you about what happened.
54:42 But these are the first Gentile converts.
54:44 Yeah.
54:45 Like literally like he, Christ, like first Gentiles to be baptized came to, to Paul in the earlier
54:52 chapter and chapter nine and said, and he told Ananias, you're going to be my vessel
54:57 to the Gentiles.
54:58 And so now Peter is opening up the Gentiles.
55:01 My area, he's opening his mind to the Gentiles because again, I think somebody brought up
55:05 the fact that he was Jewish and he was under kind of his like own Jewish traditions and
55:09 everything.
55:10 So like, you know, he has to change his mind on a lot of things too.
55:14 And this is how God's, you know, having him repent on his partiality because beforehand,
55:20 like he said to God in the dream, Oh, I don't, I don't eat, I don't eat unclean or uncommon
55:24 things.
55:25 And if you use the Gentiles as uncommon as dirty.
55:29 And so that's where he's trying to say, Hey, if they believe in me, no matter what nation
55:34 they are, I'm here for them.
55:36 No, I get it.
55:37 All right.
55:38 Well, let's wrap up here at the very end.
55:39 I just wanted to make sure that we could get a Ryan all hopped up on adrenaline and nothing
55:44 else.
55:45 So good, good to see.
55:46 And we can always see because of the redness, just cross your chest and everything like
55:49 that.
55:50 Let's wrap up acts 10.
55:51 Let's do 44 through 48.
55:52 Are you up?
55:53 Begin? I got it.
55:56 All right.
55:57 44 through 48.
55:58 Well, Peter was still speaking these words.
55:59 The Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message, the circumcised believers who had
56:04 come with Peter were astonished that gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even
56:09 on Gentiles for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
56:13 Then Peter said, surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.
56:18 They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.
56:21 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
56:25 Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
56:28 So interesting thing about that again, you know, we added chapters and verses later to
56:31 make it more readable and more, you know, accessible and referenceable.
56:35 But I feel like this section, you know, foreshadows a little bit of chapter 11 and certainly foreshadows
56:40 Galatians two where Peter, you know, started showing favoritism to the Judaizers and, you
56:44 know, it was like, Hey, yeah, yeah, you know, Christ and all that.
56:46 But also, yeah, get circumcised and, you know, follow the law and do all those different things.
56:51 And so anything on this last section before we wrap up, I think we can talk about that
56:55 next week.
56:56 If we want to go back to this.
56:57 Yeah, we can hit that next week.
56:58 I think that'd be a good thing to talk about.
56:59 The only thing I had is, is from what I was reading, this is about 10 years after Jesus
57:03 is death.
57:04 Okay.
57:05 So 10 years after Jesus died, Peter's still holding on to this Old Testament law about,
57:10 you know, so it just really hit me like, man, God is a really patient teacher.
57:15 And we should be more like that.
57:17 Right.
57:18 I'm so impatient with people.
57:19 So impatient.
57:20 And this is Peter, right?
57:21 And like, and, and it took 10 years to go through, you know, for Peter to get to this
57:27 point where the Gentiles were part of it, right?
57:29 And we're seeing this with Peter.
57:30 And then when we get into chapter 11, we're going to see it with the Jewish Christians
57:34 of the church.
57:35 Like he's going to go back and tell him this story and watch like the reaction the first
57:39 time that you see the reaction after.
57:41 It's pretty cool.
57:42 Well, guys, that's your trailer for next week.
