This is the third year I think we've been doing, third, fourth year been doing this special uh co- episode with the Deep Podcast and Undone Life. That's Kyle Thompson. And uh man, we're coming into an amazing week. These are going to release uh every morning of saturated. So, it's a really awesome resource to just even go deeper and saturate us in the >> in the spirit of God and the word of God. Um Pastor Robbie, thank you for the word today and for being here. It's your first time here. Is that right? >> Yeah, it is. Yeah. >> Uh Pastor Joby, why don't you intro Pastor Robbie a little bit? Tell us how you met and uh what made you want to invite him here? So, uh, I I think some of your sermons started popping up like in my algorithm and I first was just looking at your arms and I was like, "All right, this is my guy, you know, and uh then I started cuz you preach hard, man. You preach hard in the paint." And I was actually at an event with Chandler and I was like, "Do you know this Robbie Gallity guy? Like, is he legit?" uh because you know how can you tell from like a half a sermon here or there or whatever. And he was like, "Oh, we go way back." Started telling me stories. And then I reached out. I was like, "Dude, we need to get to know each other." And so in the last year, >> we I'm I'm we've got all kind of stuff scheduled to do together. Yeah. >> That's great, man. >> Yeah. And he he the spirit through him ruined me tonight. So look forward to not talking about that. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So about that, Joy. Let's let's deepen, right? We got to go deeper on that. >> Hopefully. >> Uh >> that's part of why I love Saturated, man. Typically when we sit down at the deepen table, >> um or every month when I'm on Undaunted Life, you know, I'm I'm producing things, answers, or you know, we're talking about the sermon I just preached. But so one of my favorite things about saturated, I know it's a ton of work for all the people that work here, >> but finally for me for four of the five days, I get to just sit and receive >> and so I did tonight. >> Awesome. >> Yeah. >> Wow. Col, anything you'd say to your audience about saturated? >> Yeah. Ultimately, I try to describe it to people and like, you know, I know I struggle with words like I don't talk very much. I kind of keep my opinions to myself and so I try to like give them like an idea of what they're going to experience cuz like when I was just walking around like talking to people before tonight, people that had not heard you preach before, people that had never been to church 11:22 and then you try to use English words to describe what's about to happen and then you just kind of give up at some point because it's just like I can't cuz if you just look at the, you know, order of events, it's like all right, you know, hype video, gal comes out, says words, another hype video, music, hype video again, guy preaches, more music and then everybody leaves. It's like, oh, so it's church. It's like, no, it's not. It's not like that at all. It's like, in the best way that I found to describe it is it's like the spirit of God is hovering in the room and it's heavy enough to where you can like grab fistfuls of it and like put it in your pocket, like take it home with you >> because it's just unlike it's it's one of those mountaintop things where maybe you experienced it at church camp, maybe you experienced it, you know, on a random Easter like at your home church or whatever. And it's just like it's that every night, but it's not manufactured because chord changes can make you like, you know, get emotional. Like chord progressions can make you get emotional like and you've got your applause lines and everything that you say. You know how to get a laugh. You know how to get, you know, the dramatic whatever. That's not what it is. It's not manufactured. It's just it's just real and sitting here. >> Yeah. So, if you're listening to this and you did not hear the message, stop it right now. Go hear it. It's amazing. Um, we talked about really the Apostle Peter and Matthew 26. And so start just by talking about why do you resonate with the Apostle Peter? I've heard you say it, Pastor Doby. You said it tonight. Why do you resonate with him? >> Yeah, you're asking me why I resonate with him. Wow. Probably a lot of ways I resonate with Peter. You know, I jokingly say Peter had a footshaped mouth. So, uh, self-appointed leader. And, um, you know, Peter is a guy. There's a lot of parallels to Peter and today in the sense of you have to be careful. Peter teaches us the dangers of trying to seek a platform because the very thing he sought was for all eyes to be on him. But the byproduct of that was all eyes were on him. >> And a lot of guys I see today, especially younger guys, and I was there. I mean, I was like, man, I want to, you know, change the world for Christ and make sure everybody sees me doing it, you know. And I talked about some of the pride and arrogance the Lord broke me of uh in that journey. But uh the challenge is the very edifice that you're building to reach the world. You got to be careful because it could crumble down. It it's tmon's noose. I mean literally the very thing you're calling for. So you have to be careful. And you know I studied guys years ago when I was going through this move of God in my own life, but I I thought what is the reason these mega leaders are falling? Because we see this all the time. It's our heroes in the faith. guys on the shelves in our bookshelf and uh why are they falling? And I don't know all the reasons, but I I'll give you a couple of them. Could it be that they're the fanfare of the world got in the way of faithfulness toward God? >> Could it be their charisma outpaced their character? >> I mean, I know character is a big deal to the Lord. Uh could it be um their giftedness got in the way of their godliness? And so, uh anyway, I think that's what happened to Peter. You know, I talked about in the sermon how Peter was telling Jesus all these great things he was going to do for God, but he was not good at listening. And >> you know, the Lord convicted me, if you want to keep getting your agenda into heaven, keep talking. >> But if you want to hear and go, listen, God's plan is way better than our plan. And man, I'm telling you, when I started to bend my ear, and again, I don't have a I hadn't graduated. You never graduate. You know, the Bibles, you grow deeper and and and longer through the word, but uh but I am on the journey. And I and I I know better today than I did, you know, five, six years ago how to hear from the Lord. And it's scary because how many pastors we know don't hear from God. >> And when you don't hear from God, when you when you don't hear from God, you fear man. When you hear from God, you don't fear anybody. >> Wow. >> And that's what I learned through that that season. Robbie, I'm curious for you because it should have occurred to me before then, but my senior pastor Mark Hitchcock, you know, DTS guy, like very just right right down the fairway like he doesn't, you know, do any of the big bombastic stuff, but he just kind of casually mentioned on an interview on my show earlier this year, he's like, "Do you understand how many pastors aren't even Christians?" Like how many people that >> for some sort of personal motivation or or like kind of misbegotten aim to fulfill something that's missing in their own lives, they have the the word pastor on their, you know, business card. It's on their LinkedIn, but they don't even have a relationship with Christ. And it's not even necessarily a wolf and sheep's clothing thing. And then I think about Joby. What's the s the verse that you look at before you come out? Like in terms of like where you get your applaudits from, like your applause from >> Galatians 11:0. >> Am I now seeking the approval of man or of God? For I seek the if I seek the approval of man, I cannot be a servant of Christ. It's the only verse I have on my desk. >> Wow. >> Yeah. That's convicting one. >> Yeah. What happens a lot of times, dude, uh I mean, I've been in the game long enough to see this. What happens is you get a lot of guys and they're just not cool and then they go to youth group and they win at youth group. I'm telling you they do. >> They win at youth group. Everybody likes them. They get the applause of man and because a great youth group is trying to be welcoming and all of that and then they realize especially if they got any kind of intelligence and a little bit of leadership chops and some care and they're getting the attention of girls they could never get anywhere else and then and they just never graduate from that and they find their identity in just grownup youth group. So they go to seminary and they get the applause because they can regurgitate back to the professor everything that he told them and you know often marry out of their league uh to some godly woman looking for a godly man you know. >> Yeah. >> And and in fact most of these guys don't have that overt sin that you were talking about that real public you know they learned in youth group I don't drink smoke or chew and go with girls who do. And so they're you know >> on paper they're winners. Yeah. You just don't know the Lord. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Like really know him. >> And they don't teach you in seminary honestly how to hear from God. >> I mean you you think of um even even saying that you know when I tell people hey when was the last time you heard the voice of God some guys write particularly guys first of all guys push we talked about this. You said this line. I have not stopped thinking about this when I was on the podcast with you but we talked about how most men say hear from God. if I sit long enough, I'm gonna go in my head and all this junk and negativity. And that's true. I mean, obviously, there is that there. But Bla1 Pascal said the greatest line about this. He said, "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly and alone by himself." >> Think about that. All of humanity's because what happens is when you sit quietly, you're faced with your own mortality. You're faced with the fact that you're not God and he is and you're not. And guys have a hard time with that. But what what silence does is it allows you to sit down and binge your ear to hear the voice of God. One of my mentors, I don't know if you remember this guy, Manley Beasley. Do you remember Manly Beasley? I know the name. >> You ever heard the name? Yeah. So, Ron Dunn, Manly Beasley, Peter Lord, and Jack Taylor. These were like the four horsemen of the Baptist convention years ago. These are guys who were spiritfilled in a you know, predominantly uh Baptist world. But anyway, Manly Beasley called the man of faith. He was written more wrote more in faith, lived it out. I befriended when I went to uh preach at a church in in um Arkansas Cross Church. Nick uh Taylor uh Nick Floyd is the pastor. He we were walking through and I had listened through the revival when I'd sit with the Lord for a silence. I'd sit for an hour and a half, two hours and then if I had time left over, I'd listen to like a podcast of like Manley Beasley, Ron Dunn. And so Manley was like a mentor to me. I've never met him. He passed. And so I'm walking through and most people don't know Manly Beasley. I'm walking through the church and Nick just happened to say, "Hey, there's Jonathan Beasley." And I was like like as in manly he's like do you ever heard of Manley beat? I'm like I've been listening to this guy for six months and this was in the middle of the revival. So I went over and started introduced myself and Jonathan and I became friends and uh he he gave me one of the greatest gifts. It's in my office. When you come you could see it. It's his dad's Bible. >> Wow. >> The Bible's important. I'll tell you why. It's just such an amazing gift. Uh he said I'll tell you a story about my dad. He said my dad always used to do two things. I remember number one is this. My dad would always come to me and say, "What do you believe in God for right now that if God doesn't step in, it won't happen?" >> And I'd ask you, if you're listening, what do you believe? Because I think most of the time we insult a big God with small prayers, we can do oursel, right? >> God's like, "Why you even you can do that?" >> Yeah. >> You know, if you if your vision that's what I love about your church, u Pastor Joby, is the fact that you're putting a big vision where if people aren't just like jolted like Long Hollow, we're about to unveil ours soon. If people aren't jolted, if you can do that, we wouldn't, you know, we wouldn't, why would we need God? But the second thing he did was this. He said, "My dad regularly would take his Bible, would take a water jug, and he would tell his wife Martha," he'd say, "Hey, I'm going to the woods." And she would always say, he said, "I remember this. It's clear as grown-up yesterday." He said, and we would say, "Dad, when are you going to be back?" And he said, "I'll be back when I get a word from God." >> And dad would be gone days sometimes. And I thought, man, how many people, how many pastors, forget, forget, you know, pastors, how many Christians are going to the woods with a water jug and a Bible, not their Twitter feed, not their ex account, not, you know, Instagram, not books, the Bible and a water jug and saying, "Hey, I'm not going to I'm not coming back to hear word from God." And I think that's the problem today. We have a lot of people listening to every other voice but God. >> Hey guys, real quick. I know a lot of you train for very specific things. Like I mean you were killing it. I love it. Uh, I love the things like, um, you know, every great revival starts with this generation and the and the way that we as believers are going to win. It's not the courthouse. It's not even the classroom. You know, it's in your prayer closet. You know, I'm like, "Yeah, let's go." And the silence and solitude thing. I almost leaned over to Gretchen and said, "That's what I do when I hunt all the time." So, totally. >> I write my sermons in the woods during deer season. I try to get in there. I try to get in the woods a couple times a week. And my favorite is not when I'm writing a sermon, but I just sit with the Lord for hours, >> no problem. And what you said is very important. It is like a muscle. Like if you if you go out tomorrow and you're like, "Well, Pastor Gity said he does an hour and a half. I'm going to do an hour and a half." It ain't going to go good for you, bro. No way. >> It's like if you have not been to the gym since the, you know, Obama administration and now you're going to go try to get in shape tomorrow, you're not going to be able to get off the toilet the next day. So it won't go good. So you got to build that thing up. Build that thing up. Okay. So I'm good. I'm amening your stuff on baptism. I'm like, let's go. Okay. And then when you get on your knees and say, "Every great move of God starts with us not moving." I'm like, "Yeah, let's go." I'm I'm into that. I I I feel like I have great clarity from the Lord on the direction of our church and what we're doing next and what we're teaching through right now. I you know, it's one of those amen kind of sermons for me. And then you said, "Dads, your family needs you in in the garden." From Matthew 26, Jesus saying, "Can't you just pray?" >> Mhm. >> And I thought my parenting style is primarily just telling them, "If you will just do what I tell you to do, everything will go better." >> Yeah. >> And I think I was the first one to the altar >> to just go, >> I'm listening. Wow. >> Yeah. >> I'm listening. >> What What do you think is the root cause of us wanting to fill the space in prayer with our words? >> I think um one we're so well I mean the enemy I tell people the enemy doesn't make you mad or bad. He just keeps you busy. So if he can keep us busy, you know, we don't have we we don't we won't slow down and hear the Lord. And the cool thing about silence and solitude, listening, bending your ear to the voice of God, it's still free. >> I love what you said to the accent of the Holy Spirit. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's a line the Lord gave me when I sit with him. I I I think >> that's real, man. >> Yeah. Okay. Because the Holy Spirit speaks with a dialect that, you know, it's like because people, this why I came up with that because people always say, "How do you know it's your voice and not the Lord's?" Well, at first you don't really, you know, you're trying to discern, is that me or the Lord? And then at the end of the day, I tell people normally the Lord, if it's easy, if it's simple, if you could do it, it's probably not God. If it's hard, if it requires change, if it makes you step out of your comfort zone, it's probably the Lord normally, right? That's kind of a simple way to think of. But there was a study done uh I was researching for this uh book I I just had come out and I was researching found out that there was a study done not long ago where they put men and women in a room for silence to see how long they could sit inside. You read this in the book. It it's fascinating this and and I laugh at that but I was like that used to be me. You put them in the room and they basically said you could sit in the room and see how long you go with total silence. And then uh they saw how long people went, but then they came back and said, "All right, we're going to put a buzzer in the room and we're going to connect you to a shocker, like a like a high voltage police shocker. We're going to shock you, but we're not going to shock you. We're going to give you the choice to shock yourself. And if you get bored, you could shock yourself." And what they found out was people couldn't wait five, six minutes because they get bored. So to keep from being in silence, they would rather shock and induce themselves with pain. >> Oh my gosh. >> Than sit in silence. Okay, now we laugh at that and I was like, "That's crazy." But then I was like, "Wow, when's the last time I went to an airport and didn't pick up a phone? >> When was the last time I went to a stopped at a red light and then look at a text?" I mean, it's like we live in this incessant world of noise and and we wonder, you know, that's my prayer. Just what if we could get a generation of Christians back to hearing from God? And I think the first step is people listening would say, I don't think God speaks that way. Why have we been taugh about this? I was thinking about this the other day. the entire book of Acts, okay, the first century church up until the third uh uh 300 AD period, three three centuries, they didn't have a Bible, they didn't have anything written down. 15 years, we didn't even have a Bible in our own language, in our own vernacular before Martin Luther and the Reformation and Tendale and Wikliffe. How do you follow the Lord? They literally prayed, the Holy Spirit led them, and they obeyed. That's the church. Okay. So, what how have we gotten today where if it ain't in the word of God? I mean, and listen, everything you hear from God has to be connected to the word. So don't hear I'm not preaching heresy here, but the reality is when was the last time you even attempted to try to hear from God. >> Say, "God, speak to me on this." Um, and so I think if we can get a generation of believers back to, hey, I'm going to go to God first. What could God do to revive the country, revive our churches, right? Our families, >> and a part of the way, you know, is it always lines up with the word of God. I mean, I'm not going to share all the junk because it involves my kids. But I was, again, man, I I uh in regards to the leadership of this church, I feel so desperate. I pray all the time. I'm like, Lord, they're your sheep. They're not my sheep. Especially when I'm preparing sermons. What do you want to say to your people through me in this passage this week? That's how I start every week. And he answers. Well, at the altar, it was I was I was like, "All right, Dad, father, as a parent, I'm listening." And the first thought that popped in my mind is not my natural inclination. >> Yeah. >> And I thought, >> okay, >> cuz cuz I want to cuz the reality is if everybody would just do what I say, your life would be better. That is a fact. Cuz I'm just going to tell you what this says okay? And then I was like, okay, I remember thinking and I thought, I got to talk to Gretchen about this. And then the next thing that happened is a chapter from first Corinthians just starts rolling through my head to define >> what I think God just told me in regards to my parenting. >> And none of the things in that chapter is my natural inclination, >> right? >> And I didn't even speak on that first I speak on Matthew 26. >> Well, Robbie, you kind of gave it away a little bit when because even when you were talking about that, why do we choose noise? Because noise is attached to chaos. And I remember I think it was Jordan Peterson was saying something about this, but it's like even if you lived in utopia, you would immediately start breaking things just so you could be familiar again with the chaos of the world before, right? So you you don't want utopia. You don't want Eden. People really don't want that. >> But there was there was almost a throwaway line um towards the middle of your talk where it's basically like no one wants to go to the garden because no one recognizes that you're going. >> Oh yeah, >> right. Because >> because how many posts have you seen where it's like am I prayer closet duck face? Like no one's doing that. Like that's not really like a thing or maybe it's not on y'all's feed, it's not online. No, >> but that's the thing that most people are not they're not even bragging about that like, oh yeah, pray for 45 minutes straight today. But part of it is because they're actually fearful that if they were to do that, and I'll I'll just be honest and throw myself right out there. The reason why you and I have connected on this so much and that you're going to help me on this is because I'm terrified of what the Holy Spirit's going to tell me >> cuz you know what? >> It's a good point >> because I know what the accent of the Holy Spirit sounds like, right? And the thing is is like if I hear a quote that's from Robbie Galdy, right, or from Vinky or from Joby and I'm like, "Oh, that they didn't say that. That doesn't sound like them at all." Like I know exactly what the accent sounds like, but I just don't always like what he says. Right. And so I think there's a lot of men that are stuck there that if they're being honest, they don't want the silence because the silence is going to push them towards discomfort and they just prefer chaos. >> But you are right. What what begins to happen, man? It's almost like if you've uh if you've been eating junk food and you decide to eat clean, at first you're like, "This is terrible." >> You know what I mean? That Big Mac tastes so good. >> But then what begins to happen is your pallet begins to change >> and real food tastes real good. >> Come on. >> And you can taste the artificial stuff and you can taste all the junk and you're like >> this your your pallet begins to change. One of the things you were talking about is you your pallet changed. You began to yearn for that hour, hour and a half on your back porch in the presence of God. That's some taste and see that the Lord is good. >> Not just what he does for me, but man, just to be with I mean >> um >> I tell people at Long there's there's two Robbies, you know, there's pre-ports Robbie and post-portchro Robbie. And so, uh, I dedicated the book to my church. And the line I said, if you look at the dedication, it says, "To the people of Long Hollow, thanks for being patient with me. After the revival, you got a new pastor and I received a new church and none of us had to leave." >> Oh, praise God. >> Because what happened was and and and you know this with with the church of 11:22. I mean, one and I said this in the sermon, once you touch the hem of the garment, just just get a you know, just a short grab or just touch it, >> you're never the same. Amen. >> And I think most I mean that's why I was telling Candy, my wife and Jeremy who was with me when we were at the end of the sermon and they said, "Man, that was you know it was amazing. People were into it." I said, "I tell you why that was what it was." Dennis what saturates about. The secret to saturate is people are coming anticipatory. >> Correct. >> To encounter God. >> Yeah. And let's be honest, most pastor, I mean, let's be honest, if you're a leader, pastor, or teacher, you don't even go to your own sermons or your own services anticipating God to do anything. >> That's good. >> I I when when the revival was happening, we felt like the floor was filled with spiritual kerosene. And every Sunday morning, I was waiting for the Holy Spirit to drop the match. >> Every Sunday morning. >> And honestly, I've gotten away a little bit of that. And we're coming back because I was telling you this Sunday I'm going back to my church and we're going to relive uh it's been five years since uh the move of God started and we're going to relive it as a church and I'm going to show some things and we're going to do a panel and stuff. But we were convicted. We did it with our staff two days ago and it was emotional and everybody's crying and we just the presence of God were there was awesome. And I looked at my staff and I said, "Why don't we do this every week?" >> Mhm. >> Like you get one life, you get one shot at this thing and you know that's why I think just cyborg that's what I think the tears are in heaven because there's no tears in heaven. Why would there be even Revelation 21? Why are there Why is he wiping away tears from heaven and it can't be sin and you know all that's gone. I think the tears, this is my thought. I think the tears in heaven are when we finally see Jesus face to face and our faith becomes sight. We're going to realize at that moment we should have done and could have done more for him. >> And when you get to heaven, you know, he's going to say, "Come on in." But you're going to wish you could have done more for Christ. And so here's a line I teach my kids and I teach a lot of people this. In life, you can only say two things about everything in life. Everything. I wish I had or I'm glad I did. Everything. And I don't want to be the person saying the first. >> I said the first about a lot of things, but I don't want to do that when it comes to CR. I want to leave it all in the field. I want to see Jesus. And I want to say, man, I did it all I could for you while I was here. >> Well, Robbie, the photo negative of that is what RC Sproul said about weeping and nashing of teeth. He said, "Some are weeping because they're like, oh man, I missed it. I I said no, I rejected this." The nashing of teeth is that they're so angry at God that he would give them what they wanted the whole time, which was for them to be their own God. Right? That's the nashing of teeth. It's the exact photo negative of what you just said, what the tears in heaven will be. >> I've never made the connection of Jesus's words to Peter, >> pray, watch, and pray that you won't fall into temptation. And Jesus having in his mind the temptation to betray me. Mhm. >> And so you you tied those together and you said the failure in prayer, the fail failure in the garden was directly tied to the failure in the courtyard. >> Yes. >> So you just talked about pre- porch and post porch. Robbie, how how does the prayerlessness lead to failure or and vice versa? >> Well, I mean it's kind of like navigating in a car without GPS. You would never nowadays. Why would you, you know, you Teslas now you get in, it's full. What's funny about Tesla, just full disclosure, I went and drove a Tesla. I made the mistake. Just >> they make one you can fit in. >> Well, bro, listen. This is this is crazy. So, I'm I'm saying this publicly and people are hearing this. Okay. So, I've been looking at Teslas for I'm like a iPhone gadget fanat. I love all that, you know, and I'm a car guy. My dad uh grew up with a dad who had a body shop. >> Oh, yeah. >> So, I grew up, you know, pulling moldings and taking off bumpers and wiping bondo and painting. So, I grew up with all this. I've always been a car guy. But, uh I've looked at Teslas for years and I'm thought I can't fit in. Well, they got a new model, the Model Y L out. Believe it or not, I've got a Dodge Ram right now, which people, my family thinks I'm crazy. So, if you're from my church, don't email me. I get it. But the the like, why would you get it? I measure it. The front cab of the new Tesla Y Lunch is bigger than my Dodge Ram. I'm not You don't believe me? Go look it up yourself. So, so anyway, I made the mistake. Okay, I made the mistake. Our buddy, uh, you know, our buddy Theo, he he's got one. He's got he's got Cybertruck. But, so he was telling me about Tesla. I was like, "All right, I'll go." Don't ever do this. Don't ever do this. Cuz there's two types of Tesla people in the world. Again, if you listen, some of the Tesla people here are like, "Amen." There's those who make fun of Teslas, like I used to for years, and then there's those who test drive them and buy them. There's no there's only two people. Okay. Okay. But here's my point. This is a hot take on a on a fresh. We could do what we want with it, but and I haven't figured this out yet, but here's the deal. I get in the car and the guy says, "I'm going to let you drive the car." So, you have to schedule your drive. And I could have test drove it at a hotel parking lot with nobody there. Like literally the car would have showed up. I drive it with my phone and leave and go. But but I decided to go to the dealership in Franklin, Tennessee. I get to the parking lot. Jo is crazy. He says, "You want me to summon the car?" I was like, "Okay." He pulls out his app and he summons the car. This thing backs out corner of the lot, drives and picks us up at the front door. But it gets even better. So we get in the car and he said, it gets crazy. Watch this. He get we get in the car and he says, "Hey, I'm going to I'm going to show you how full cuz that's the only reason I want to get it. I realize, full confession, I am the worst driver. My wife's like, "We should have told you that." But I'm literally texting and sometimes watching YouTube drive. But anyway, I mean, I'm just going to So, this is a this is a safe this is a this is a life, you know, >> it's for the rest of us. >> Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> So, this is everybody else to save lives. >> Okay. But I'm getting somewhere. But watch this. So, I get in this car and he says, he said, "I'm going to show you full self-driving." And so he literally puts in some restaurant, you know, a mile away. This thing takes off and it is bonkers. I'm telling you, this thing pulls out. And he's just sitting there talking to us the whole time. And the whole time I'm like, "Dude, you need to grab the like this is insane. Like it's merging. It's pulling out. It's stopping at red light. Guy gets over. It gets over. And we get to the thing and he's like, "All right, you want to drive it back?" So I drove back full self-driving. Here's what I realized. More people who are Tesla owners, Tesla owners, trust a full self-driving car than they trust the father. M bro, come on. >> That's what trust is. >> Trust is not I get in the car, set full self-driving. God, you take the wheel and then grab the wheel. No, no, no. He never touched it one time. He didn't even care. He was like, and I was like, wow, this dude has more trust in this car, this hit me when I was sitting there >> than most Christians do in the father. And by the way, not only does the father Tesla, you can go from either, you know, uh, you know, a eighth of a mile to a half a mile and you can see the people and you can like make the screen where it only sees a little bit or it sees more. God sees the whole thing >> all the time. >> He see for God. I love this line. Somebody told me this years ago. God knows our future better than we know our own past >> and we still don't trust him. So I think that's part of it. If you realize, man, I have an unfair advantage as a Christian that I have access to the commander-in-chief who sees all cuz he's got a vantage point from the beginning of time, eternity, future, and the present simultaneously. And once you figure this, I mean, it's a cheat code. And I tell you, I mean, I pastor long hollow m strength. I'll never go back. I'll never go back. I told our church, if you don't let me press into God and, you know, talk about the Holy Spirit, I'll go somewhere else and pastor because I've done that. I've done the intellectual degrees, you know, the I've done that. But now this is a whole it's a whole lot more satisfying >> and it's a whole lot more exciting to see God work this way. >> When you mentioned um man that this one clip has come up on deepen built for more unded life. It's come up so many times for like the last year. It was when Theo Vaughn kind of broke down on his podcast. It was basically like questioning can I give my life to God like >> Yeah. And so he's like >> can I do that? What he's essentially saying is like, okay, can I give the wheel over to somebody else? Like, can I deny? Because it's not like, oh, can I get rid of my bad habits? Can I get rid of my bad relationships? >> Yeah. When Jesus asked, do you want to be healed? And he and Theo, >> right? >> I told him last time I was with him, I was like, that's the best sermon on prayer I've ever heard. And in his really humble way, he's like, I man, I am not a preacher. I'm like, I'm just telling you, I'm a professional. Will you trust me? >> Mhm. >> Right. Like, if I told a joke, I would trust you to evaluate it. So let me cuz it was so honest. And he he says, "Do I do I want to be healed?" That's it. Do I trust God for what he has for me? Do I trust that what he has for me is better than I want? Because most of us think what we want is better than what God has for us. >> Oh, that's good. That's good. >> Yeah. The enemy loves the long game. >> So he'll get you prayerless and you can't see three steps, four days, a month later >> of what test is going to come your way. And if and if he gets you prayerless here, >> he knows you're going to be off your game there. And I mean, who knows what it's going to cost you. >> What I'm thinking about, Vinky, >> is I kn when we planted the church, this thing just took off like a spiritfilled rocket ship. I knew I didn't have what it takes to lead this thing. >> So sometimes you can be really prayerful in one area, but I mean, just confession time as I evaluate my parenting I think I've been just parenting in my own power. I mean, I love my kids. I read Bible verses over them. I pray over them. You know what I mean? >> But honestly, I know how to do all those things. >> I know how to do all those things. >> Yeah. >> I know what the Bible says. I've been 20 years old. I've been 17 years old. You know what I mean? >> And so, that's what killed me, man, >> is when you said, "Dads, your family needs you in the garden. wives, >> your husband and your kids need need you in the garden. Bosses, >> your employees need you in the garden. I think that's how we have to think about it because I think because you have a tendency to think like, you know, like prayer equals church equals like you kind of compartmentalize it into just kind of your church world, your your spiritual life. >> Yeah. >> As opposed to just your whole life. >> Like God, I'm listening. Do you have anything to say to me about >> fill in the blank? >> That's good. I never thought about that. Yeah. >> And just listen. >> That's good. Yeah. >> Well, Robbie, you said in the the sermon and I don't think people really understand the drama, the moment in different films and TV shows have tried to capture it, but in the moment that Peter denied Jesus for the third time and then they locked eyes, right? I think we've all had that moment where we locked eyes with somebody and you knew what was being communicated between the two of you and it wasn't words. It was just you knew what was going down in that moment. I don't think there's been a more poignant >> uh look in in human history. And you said I mean that Peter failed in the courtyard because he was sleeping in the garden because he couldn't stay awake for I mean yeah I don't I ran out of stars uh to put next to it. U but it was like for for all of us and but again it's let's speak to the audience like we have a lot of men in our audience. I have a 95% male audience. Shout out to the 5 percentersenters. But like we have so many moments where we can take advantage of the time with the Lord. We make time for everything that's important to us, but we just flat out won't do it. And so, I mean, your new book certainly goes into that quite, you know, explicitly and in detail of how you did it. >> Yeah. >> Because you were the guy that was like, if it's going to be done right, it's going to be done by me, right? And and hey, and if someone's got to burn the midnight oil, it's going to be me times two. And like you had to like kill that in you. You didn't like play nice with it. You didn't play nice with pride whenever the Holy Spirit convicted you of it. You killed it. >> Yeah. >> And so, I mean, what would be your message to men that are trying to do that themselves? >> Yeah. I think um so my background um I was raised um when I was 19 years old, I got in a network marketing business. Uh kind of like Amway, but it was ACN. Excel was kind of phone service. So, I say at 19, I got caught up into this personal growth, positive thinking. So saw Tony Robbins twice, Zig Ziggler, Les Brown, Omar Peru, and and the and the business, I didn't know the Lord back then, blew up within two years. We had um 20 something people in our downline. We my father put up the money and he had a body shop, so I had all his contacts and I had the ADHD and energy. And so we were like like broke all the records and I was speaking at a 1920 never knowing the Lord was going to use that years later. But I say all that to say my motto back then was if it's meant to be, it's up to me. >> I mean, that's that's how I lived. >> So when I got saved, I come to Christ, which I'm not saying you you should be lazy and, you know, slothful, but I came to Christ and I'm like, man, if anybody's going to change, I'm going to do it. My own strength, you know, God and me, look what we got going. We got a good thing going here, you know. >> And so I had a mentor named Tim Laflur. He took a chance on me. I was a Christian for a year and he took me to Gloria, New Mexico. >> Uh remember the Christian camp? Okay. I'll tell you a little sidebar story here. So I met so I met Gloria New Mexico and and I had an opportunity to do centric kid on the east coast where I'd preach five days a week and I would travel to like eight to 10 cities and I was you know I knew it was called a ministry plat was discipling me and I wanted to preach and I just started seminary and uh so I was going to run this centric kid or I had the opportunity to go spend a summer with a guy named Tim Laflur who was the BCM director at Nickel State small school middle of nowhere >> but a lot of the guys at Edgewater Baptist church where David was and Jim Shadex was discipling me. They had been personally discipled by Tim. Tim had discipled at that time, you know, 50 different people. And so I was praying about it and they said, "A summer with Tim Leafur will change your life." And so I prayed about it and it's crazy. I was I gave up the, you know, five times a week, eight weeks, 10 weeks to go spend the summer with Tim. So Tim Tim brings me to Gloria, New Mexico. And I'm the camp pastor for the summer. There's about 150 students, men and women, and they would go serve the camp. So the chuck wagon and uh they would do the cafeteria and the ropes course and the library and the mail room and then every Sunday they'd hear me preach and then I would disciple them and you know we'd go out in Santa Fe and share the gospel. Well I'm there I'm a new Christian. I'm only a Christian a year. I mean I'm I'm I got saved and in the boat too and now this is summer of04 so a little over a year and I remember come they were coming in and so I got to hear like TWW Hunt and Richard Blackabe and Henry Blackabe and David Platt was there. Well, this guy came in. I never even heard of this guy. His name was Matt Chandler. And I'm like, Matt Chandler? I'm only a Christian a year. And I just remember this dude speaking like I had never heard anybody speak in my life. I tell I joke about I still remember the exact story of him talking about a mom who wouldn't discipline her child at the airport. It was some funny story. You've probably heard him tell the story. So anyway, I go up to him after the service. Well, I hung with Matt and Lauren. His daughter was still in a stroller. That's how long ago this was. Wow. >> So I've known Matt Ch before he was Matt Chandler. I mean, he was just planning the village, I think. But anyway, >> he was here two days ago. >> Yeah. Oh, yeah. No, I missed him. I I was telling uh Garrett, I wish I was, but um so I've known Matt 20 years. I mean, I just knew him back then. But anyway, so Tim uh first disciplehip group, Tim says to me this question changed everything. He said, "I'm going ask you a question." He said, "Uh, what is more important to God, the worker or the work? The work you do or the person you are?" And I sat back on my chair. I was like, "Of course it's the the work. what are you talking about? It's what I do for the Lord. And he said, "No, >> it's who you are." And he said, "Robbie, on your best day, you can't please God in your own strength." He said, "Uh, the Bible says filthy rags to the Lord." He said, "But if you allow the Lord to work in you to work through you, you'll change the world." And he said, uh, in your own strength own strength, it's impossible to please the Lord. But if you allow the Lord to work in you, you begin to grow close to the Lord. Well, I sat back in the chair, I didn't have a category for that. I'm like, what do you mean I can't do anything to please the Lord? And it changed my life. And then I found this Jerry Bridges quote years later, which kind of is the same way. Jerry Bridges said, "On your worst day, you're never beyond the reach of the grace of God." And somebody needs to hear this probably today. On your worst day, you're never beyond the reach of the grace of God, but on your best day, you and I are still desperately in need of the grace of God. >> Amen. >> On our best day. That's good. >> And so, it's from grace to grace. And so I had to learn that that, you know, if that's the way God works, God is the engine. God is the horsepower that drives my Christian life. And you know, I mean, you can say there's a lot of things, but when I step in, God steps back. >> Yeah. >> So many pastors, you know, God, the Holy Spirit's outside. He's like, "Hey, you got it, boss. When you need me, we'll be out here." And they don't even realize it till it's till it's too late. And like you said, not only is not only we pray for God to be here, but God's here. >> And when God shows up, bro. >> Yeah. >> Changes everything. >> Yeah. Well, uh, sadly we don't go quite as long on these. Um, but can we just end with a couple really practical? Let's say somebody's like, I want to start like give them the three. They're going to read your book. Okay. But what what are two or three things like, hey, I want to start making myself more available. You I love the line you said, God misses your company, you know? So, >> uh, how does somebody start? >> Yeah. Um, so I talk about this in the book extensively, but I'll just tell you some quick things I do. Telling somebody to go sit with the Lord in silence and solitude is not helpful because what do you do? I mean, it's like telling somebody, "Go to the gym and work out." It's like, what? They don't know what to do. That's why people at the gym, they're constantly on their phones or walking around looking at weights. You need somebody to coach you, right? I mean, that's what it is, right? >> Gym field videos of them doing it run fast. >> Oh my gosh. Oh my god. Okay. So what you need is you need so the line I use is to have to create a sacred space. There's nothing sacred about my space. My porch was for a season. Then I have a shed I go into now. U but to create a sacred space you need a specific time and place. Okay. Nothing special about the place but Jesus regularly in the morning early met with the Lord. And I believe by the way just cyber on Jesus but I believe and and Jesus said this. He said, "I don't know what to the father tells me what to do and I don't even say anything without the father telling me and leading me." So how did he do that? So the sovereign son gave up his divine prerogative. Philippians 2, not the equality with God a thing to be. He gave up his ability to know it and he depended upon the father and he did that to show us what it's like to trust God and obedience. Okay? So if that's the case, watch this. I believe every morning Jesus got up early and God the Father downloaded his daily agenda to the hard drive of his heart. Think about this. Every morning he gets up. All right, today you're going to do this, this, and this. And Jesus like, I got it. And he obeys the father. Okay, so if that's the case, and he did it for G. And by the way, if anybody didn't need to do that, it was Jesus. >> Yeah. And yet if Jesus gets up every morning to spend time with the father as the sovereign son of God who's the eternal, how much more do we as mere mortals need to do the same. Okay. So all that said, that's my setup. Okay. So two things and I'll give them to you quickly. Number one is this. You need to find a place where you're separated. For me it was the porch. You can do and I like being in nature like you. You could do it early in the morning on the um hunting in a deer stand or a duck blind. But you can do that. You got to get alone. No distraction. No phone. not a notebook. I mean, you could do that later, but this is total time. And I would set an alarm. Start with five minutes. If you don't think five minutes is long, try it. I remember the first time I did, I thought I had sat forever and man, I thought it was morning and it was like a minute and 37 seconds. I'm like, what? I'm telling you, try it. You think it's crazy. It's crazy how deafening >> silence. And by the way, God's first language was silence. >> How do I say that? because out of nothing God gave everything when he spoke it. He spoke the world into being out of silence. Okay. So, uh the first thing is you need a specific place. Second thing is you need a practice. Okay. I always do Psalm 46:10. This is something I learned and I I take it in reverse and then I start with be still and know that I'm God and then I work down in reverse. And then once you sit inside, this is the kicker. You have to have a phrase or a word or a scripture to help you come back into the presence of God. So what the goal the difference between uh new age you know um eastern meditation and biblical meditation is new age eastern mysticism is you quiet the ripples of the soul so you can look within and get real quiet so the goal is like Zen Buddhism quiet for a long >> empty the mind >> yeah empty the mind that's not what we're doing here biblical meditation is active mental activity not passive mental uh you know passive um activity of the mind so what I'm doing is anytime the mind wanders and it will and the goal is not try to get 10 minutes up to 20 minutes of total silence. That's not the goal. I still I've been doing this for six years now almost and I still can go 30 seconds sometimes. I mean, I go sometimes a minute or two, but that's not the goal. The goal is for you to come back into the present. The goal is for you to be present in the presence of God. That's the goal. And it's and it's antithetical. When I say that to us as like driven men, we're like that means you're going to have to tell yourself for months. You got to get past saying I'm doing nothing here. This a waste. I'm telling you, I did that for I still did that at times. Am I doing real? No. What you're doing is you're just present in the presence of God. So my word during the revival was Romans 8:16 which was abba father. You know when the spirit cries aba father my ch I changed it after the revival and I got it tattooed on my wrist be still because I'm kind of dumb and I need to be reminded be still. So that's what I'm again the words mean. My wife Candi's words a little long. She would say less of me more of you. I think it's long she says it's not. So that's between her and the lord. Anyway it doesn't matter. The point is when your mind wanders, which it will, you come back to be in the presence of God. So, well, I'll do it for you. We we this is how I do every time I take a couple deep breaths and I just exhale anxiety and fear and depression and stress and what's tomorrow. And I just try to be present with the Lord. And then I'll do in my mind, be still and know I'm God. And then I'll pause and and you could get creative. Sometimes I'll think about the last word, you know, God. What does it mean to be God? Or sometimes just do it. Be still and know I am. Be still and know. Be still. Be >> No, you can feel if you're with us, you can feel the RPM slow down. I mean, you could just feel things slow down. >> And so I'll do that and then I'll start sitting in silence. And my alarm set 5 minutes. Now the moment you think did I lock the back door which you will think this what time am I waking up tomorrow whom I meet whatever and by the way if you're a pastor preacher you'll get the best sermon ideas you've ever had in your life I promise you resist the temptation to to go I I liken your thoughts like uh ships you're sitting on a seashore here in Jacksonville we're sitting on a seashore and you see these boats go by those boats are your thoughts in your mind it's the best illustration that's helped me the temptation is going to be to swim out get in the boat of the thought man I wonder what that you know did I Lock the back door. What is the key? What time is the door? Did I lock the door? The front lock. Once you realize you're in the boat, you repeat your phrase, be still, and get out the boat and come back to the shore. Don't get mad. Don't get upset with yourself. So thoughts are like boats. You got to let them go by. If they're important, and if the if the sermon idea is good, God, Holy Spirit promised to bring it back if he needs to. And then I just every time the mind wanders. Now, here's the thing. At the end of this, Pete Scazero, who's a friend, said he brought in um Father Miner, who was a guy in a monastery, to come lead his staff. They went from zero to 20 minutes. Don't try this at home. Not for the faint of heart. 0 to 20 minutes, they have this uh time with the staff and his whole staff goes through this 20-minute silence meditation time. Okay? At the end of it, and they were doing a special word, you know, whatever word they want. And at the end of it, one lady raised her hand. She said, "Father men of God, blew it. I messed the whole thing up." And he said, "What do you mean, sister?" And she said, "In 20 minutes, my mind wandered a hundred times." And he said, "Sister, oh no." He said, "What a gift. God has given you a 100 opportunities to come back to him." >> That's the goal. >> Think about this. Think about if you just have a forget 20 minutes, five minutes a day. Every time I preach now, bro, every time I get in the word, every time I pray, anything, I always do be still in the know of God and I sit in five, you know, 5 10 minutes. anytime I do something and boys here's what I tell people it's like the tuning fork to tune my ear to the accent or the voice of God that's all this silence does is tuning my ear and then think of it as an operating system then in the book I talk about how to do the examine which is how to do consolations and desolations I talk about how to do the prayer of difference where you're hearing from the Lord your bra so there's think of silence as the operating system and then you adding these apps on but you have to start with with silence so >> hopefully that's helpful Yeah. Yeah. Well, Pastor Joy, why don't you end with any closing comments and then maybe Pastor Robbie, you'd pray for us. But what you got? >> Yeah, man. Uh, I think of John chapter 10, very famous verse, right? That the thief comes only to come. He only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The only thing he wants to do in your life is steal, kill, and destroy. >> And you call it distraction, but the enemy calls it death and destruction. M >> and right on the heels of that, Jesus says, "But I've come that you may have life and have it abundantly." And then he says, "I'm the good shepherd. >> My sheep hear my voice. >> The voice of a stranger they will not listen to." >> Yeah. >> So what hangs in the balance here is not anxiety or not anxiety. It's not peace or not peace. It's not even my way or God's way. hangs in the balance according to Jesus in John 10 is life >> or death. >> Yeah. >> So if you think that's worth it, >> then you may want to tune in to the voice of the good shepherd. >> Mhm. >> So that you can follow him and do what you say. Cuz every time you hear his voice and do what it say it says, >> then you're always taking steps towards the abundant life. >> Mhm. And every t single time you ignore his voice or don't hear his voice >> or you follow the voice of the stranger. >> Yeah. >> It's going to death. >> And what I've never thought about this till just not so good. What if after death the only people that get to be with Jesus for eternity are the ones who can discern his voice among the 10,000 and >> you know I don't know. I'm just saying it. If Jesus says the ones who follow me know my voice, hear my voice and know my voice and follow me. >> And so it's not just oh everybody knows Jesus. Middle Tennessee Jack everybody of course you know Jesus. The question is does Jesus know you? And the better question is do you know how to discern the voice of Jesus when he calls. >> And that's why disciplehip and you know equipping the saints and growing in your faith is so important. such as a check my box waiting for the spiritual scanner to come in the sky to you know get the barcode in my wrist so I can go to heaven one no you got to grow training today Dallas Willard said for raining tomorrow and so >> Amen thank you so much Pastor Robbie for sharing that with us and I'd love for you to close us in prayer >> yeah I'd love to y thank you for stillness in silence. When Elijah wanted to to to die, he said he said, "Everybody's against me. Um there's no one left but me and and I don't even want to live." He says it twice in First Kings 19:10 and verse 14. Um and and you come to him and you ask him this question, "Where are you, Elijah? How did you how did you get here? You say it twice. You say it before, you reveal yourself in a voice and you say it after. How did you get here? And I think that's the question all of us need to ask ourselves. How did we get here? How do we get off track? How did we wander from the Lord? How have we done ministry for Jesus without ever having intimacy with Jesus? And then you say, "Hey, I'm going to show you. I'm going to show you the prescription for anxiety and depression and weariness and burnout." And it's not go do more, try harder. It's, "Hey, wait and hear from me." And and you show up not in a not in an earthquake, not in wind, not in fire, not uh in anything extraordinary. Not we would think a supernatural firework show for the God of heaven. But no, you decide to >> come in the still small voice. And >> the Hebrew word there is whisper. And I wonder God if if the tone and volume of your voice in a whisper is hard for us to hear because of the influx of noise and the volume of distraction and the voices in our life and the subcommittee in our head that we can't keep quiet. And so help us God to encounter silence. And and I say encounter because it is an encounter. >> It's not for the faint of heart. It's not for those who are going to try it and go move on. It's almost like God, you give extra grace for those who make time for you because you can trust them and you're like, "Yeah, well, yeah, let's let's share something with Robbie or Joby or Kyle. Just let's tell them something." Candy, yeah, of course. And Gretchen, yeah, of course. So, I just pray God for all of us that as we open our ears to hear from you, you will speak to us. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for the good shepherd. Thank you for always speaking. Give us ears to hear, eyes to see. We love you, Lord. We ask it in your name.
