0:18 This is Undaunted Life of Man's podcast.
0:21 I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:22 Let's get into it.
0:23 Our guys today, I got a very special guest on the podcast.
0:26 He is the one and only Phil Robertson.
0:28 So he is a professional hunter, business man, and a reality TV star.
0:32 He is the patriarch of the great American family, the Robertson's.
0:36 He's the founder of the great company, Duck Commander.
0:38 He was featured prominently on one of the biggest reality TV shows ever,
0:41 and that was Duck Dynasty.
0:43 Also, he's the author of several best-selling books, including Happy, Happy, Happy,
0:47 Unfiltered.
0:47 That's with a Ph.I.L. in the middle, The Theft of America Soul, and Jesus Politics.
0:52 And today we're going to see you spending really a lot of our time
0:54 focused on a new book that is out right now called Uncancelled,
0:58 Finding Meaning and Peace in a Culture of Accusations, Shame, and Condemnation.
1:03 So it's his brand new book.
1:04 I was so happy to get an advanced copy of it and to read it before we did the interview.
1:08 It's out.
1:09 If you're listening to this right now, it is out this week.
1:11 It is good to go.
1:12 You're able to take it in.
1:13 The thing with his books, his books are very simple.
1:16 They get to the point.
1:17 They're quick and easy reads, but he's getting into a very, very pertinent topic
1:22 to our modern time, and that's cancel culture.
1:24 That's what the entire book is about.
1:26 And as you can imagine in this interview, and if you've watched any interviews with Phil
1:29 or listened to his podcast, this didn't go in any way, shape or form,
1:33 the way that I thought it would, but then in a way it did.
1:36 Because I prepared all these questions.
1:37 I wanted to talk about all these different topics, but I'm like,
1:39 I know Phil's just going to go and talk about whatever he wants to talk about.
1:42 And I was ready for it.
1:43 So we were going to spend some time talking about Duck Dynasty, the show.
1:46 We didn't talk about the show basically at all.
1:48 We didn't get into, you know, why the show came about and all those different things.
1:51 We did get into his early life, we got into, you know, how he used to play college football,
1:55 you know, what made him kind of get into duck hunting and, you know,
1:58 professionally and making duck calls and those types of things.
2:01 But we spent a ton of time talking about our modern culture.
2:03 And to be honest with you guys, it was like living inside of Phil's head
2:06 as he was giving a sermon.
2:08 That's what this podcast was about.
2:10 But towards the end, I asked him a question that was basically a continuation
2:14 of the appearance that I made on his show, the Unashamed Podcast last summer,
2:18 because we spent most of that time talking about masculinity and manhood within the
2:22 church and those types of things.
2:23 But I was able to ask him a question that was kind of in that vein.
2:26 I really loved his answer to that.
2:27 But guys, one of the best times that I've had on interview,
2:30 because I just got to shut my mouth and watch this guy do his thing.
2:34 He had the Bible sitting right there on his chair.
2:36 If you're not watching the video of it, the Bible sitting right there on the chair.
2:38 We did the interview basically right there in his living room.
2:41 He's sitting in his chair that he normally sits in, you know,
2:43 from the show or any of the times that you've seen him.
2:45 And we just chatted and he's opening up the Bible and he's just flipping to this
2:48 story and flipping to that story and quoting scripture off the top of his head.
2:52 It was such a fun conversation.
2:53 I was really, really glad to be a part of it.
2:55 I feel very, very lucky to have been a part of it.
2:57 I'm glad I can help bring that to you guys as well.
2:59 But I'm not going to keep him from you any longer.
3:01 So without further ado, let's get into it.
3:04 Phil Robertson, welcome to Undaunted Life of Man's podcast.
3:07 Hey, good to be here, man.
3:10 I'm glad to see you again.
3:11 It's good to reconnect.
3:12 And there are a lot of places that I can start this interview with you.
3:15 But we got a lot of ground to cover.
3:16 We're going to hit a lot of different subjects.
3:17 But just to give the audience a little bit of an idea,
3:20 you were born and raised in Vivian, Louisiana.
3:22 So describe for us what it was like growing up in rural northern Louisiana as a kid.
3:27 Log cabin, one man built it with a crosscut sauna axe.
3:34 No bathtub, no running water out of the sink.
3:39 The refrigerator was literally an ash box.
3:44 You go get a block of ice in town.
3:46 Put that block of ice in there where you kept your milk, your cheese.
3:49 So basically we lived, ate a lot of ducks and squirrels.
3:57 Life was good.
3:59 We'd plant a little garden every year and have some potatoes in front of the house.
4:05 But life was good.
4:08 It was a very simple life.
4:09 Well, so talk to me a little bit about that because some people will hear you describe that.
4:13 And they're like, oh my gosh, you were living in Squalor.
4:15 I bet you were depressed.
4:16 I bet you were just downtrodden the entire time.
4:18 But that wasn't what it was like for you.
4:20 Oh, not at all.
4:21 We were perfectly happy.
4:23 We were poor.
4:25 But no one ever said, I never heard anyone say, boy, we are really poor.
4:30 No one ever said that.
4:32 We were doing fine.
4:34 We had plenty of, uh, raised our own beat, killed our own hogs,
4:39 had a smokehouse where you smoked the meat.
4:42 So I was raised and, uh, if you had pulled up there in your vehicle and looked around,
4:47 you would have thought in the 1950s, when I was a boy, I was born in '46,
4:54 you would think it was 1850.
4:57 It was, it was just like, except for an old beat-up forward car,
5:01 it was just like the 1800s.
5:04 My dad was old school.
5:06 So it was like living in the 1800s.
5:08 It's sort of the 1900s.
5:10 Yeah. And I think that's interesting for a lot of people.
5:12 You hear some people that'll go on and do mission work,
5:14 you know, in Africa or other places around the world.
5:16 And a lot of these people don't have a lot of things.
5:18 And yet they're incredibly happy and satisfied.
5:20 Because we don't understand, like you don't need a whole bunch of tech.
5:23 You don't need a whole bunch of, you know, frilly things to make your life nice.
5:26 It's comfortable for a lot of people.
5:28 But the cool thing about you as well is obviously you grew up as an outdoorsman,
5:31 and we'll get more into that here in just a second.
5:33 We also grew up an athlete.
5:34 So a lot of people may not know this about you,
5:36 but you actually got a scholarship to go play football at Louisiana Tech
5:39 in the late 1960s.
5:41 And famously, you were the starting quarterback
5:43 over some guy that no one's ever heard of named Terry Bradshaw.
5:46 So that was kind of a cool feather you got in your cap.
5:49 So, but my understanding, Phil, is that it was your love of duck hunting
5:52 that kept you from really pursuing pro football after college.
5:56 Is that right?
5:57 That is correct.
5:58 I sat Bradshaw down one day, and I said, Bradshaw,
6:03 I said, you want to go play pro ball, play football.
6:07 And I understand that.
6:09 I said, unfortunately, I'm first string and your second string.
6:13 I said, you haven't beaten me out yet.
6:16 I said, well, I don't want to play pro ball.
6:18 I said, I want to go to the woods and live a life in the woods.
6:25 And I said, so I have one more year to play, but here's what I'm going to do.
6:29 I'm going to step out and you're going to step up.
6:32 And I said, good luck to you, but I'll be gone.
6:36 I won't play next year.
6:37 And he said, are you serious?
6:39 I said, yes, I am.
6:40 I heard him not too long ago, a few years, a couple, two or three years ago.
6:45 He made a comment and he said, I'll tell you one thing about that guy.
6:49 He said, he had a quicker release than I did.
6:51 So, Bradshaw had me a little bit on distance.
6:55 I could take a step and throw a football about 65 yards,
6:59 which is fine to go to the pros.
7:02 Bradshaw probably another five to 10 yards.
7:05 He had a gun of an arm.
7:08 I was a little quicker on the release, but 40 years after I told him that,
7:14 you go play pro ball, I'm walking along in the airport in Los Angeles.
7:18 Someone grabbed me from behind, I looked around.
7:22 It was old Bradshaw.
7:23 I said, Bradshaw, you did well, man.
7:26 Super bowls.
7:27 I said, you did great.
7:28 He said, you did pretty good yourself in the woods.
7:32 Making duck holes and duck holes.
7:34 So, we both congratulated each other and rocked on.
7:38 It's a great story, but it's true.
7:40 Yeah, I think you both made out and made the right career choices,
7:43 but I really think that that springboard's nicely into the early 70s,
7:47 into the early 70s, because in 1972, you left your career as a coach.
7:51 You were doing a little bit of coaching.
7:52 You were doing a little bit of schooling there,
7:54 and you wanted to pursue a career with duck hunting, okay?
7:57 But specifically with making duck calls.
7:59 So, you founded Duck Commander, the company in the next year in 1973.
8:04 So, take us through the early days, because I think you kind of got into this,
8:08 because you were really dissatisfied with a lot of the duck calls that were on the market.
8:12 You made a comment, I think I remember where you're like,
8:14 yeah, these duck calls would win a duck call competition,
8:17 but they're not going to call ducks properly.
8:19 So, take us through why you really want to shake up the duck call market.
8:23 What I thought about is this, as a young boy living in the woods,
8:28 I was very familiar, and I became very interested.
8:33 I was into what birds sound like.
8:37 And I thought, I said, you know, these people build these duck calls.
8:43 I said, you know, they're doing their Arkansas high ball,
8:46 and I said, I've never even heard a mallard duck do that.
8:49 A duck can't even do that.
8:50 So, I started, and what I did was, I not only built a mallard call,
8:57 which is about all they had, I built a gap wall call, I built a teal call,
9:03 I built a pin tail call, a witching call, you see what I'm saying?
9:08 In other words, I built the whole gamut, a wood duck, I built a wood duck call.
9:13 So, I just didn't build a mallard duck call, and go to some contest,
9:18 I built a variety of duck calls that sound like most of the ducks on these flyways.
9:24 And as it turned out, the first year sales, by the way,
9:27 $8,000 and I said, Miss Kay, we are rolling.
9:33 She said, we're going to starve to death.
9:36 I said, no, we're not going to starve to death, honey.
9:38 Wait until next year.
9:39 It was about 13,000 the second year, the unlike 22,000,
9:44 the in 38,000, and then 60,000.
9:49 In about year six or seven, we finally hit the $100,000 mark and say,
9:54 I said, we are really rolling now.
9:56 What I didn't realize is about 2014, and I started about,
10:02 after about 30 years, I looked up one day and someone called,
10:06 they said, come sign your 1 millionth duck call we've sold this year.
10:15 So I went up there to the factory and I signed the duck call.
10:20 And we sold that year 1.2 million.
10:22 That's when Duck Dynasty was there.
10:24 And I said, where are all these duck calls going?
10:27 They said, I'm selling more duck calls than they had duck hunters.
10:30 And someone said, it's the women where most of the money always is.
10:34 It's the women who are buying it for their children, for their salons or dollars.
10:39 And I thought, well, why do you know?
10:41 So it just, it was like this at it.
10:46 And now we probably sell 200,000 duck calls a year.
10:50 So it's still going, but it seems like a long way off now.
10:56 But all I do now is, is I fear God and I do what's right.
11:00 I share Jesus with Jesus with people and I duck hunt.
11:05 That's my schedule.

12:02 That's where we're going to go.
12:06 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:12 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:15 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:19 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:23 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:26 We're going to go ahead and do a little bit of the work we're going to do.
12:29 Jesus said no more and he snatched you out of it. Go any direction you want to with that.
12:33 I started out as a young man. I was trained very well. My mom and dad both were very godly people.
12:43 As they say, all have sinned and falls short of the glory of God.
12:49 The apostle Paul told the Romans and the wages of sin is death.
12:55 I began to sin and became a victim and I was ensnared by the evil one.
13:02 He's got me by the throat. Now I'm getting drunk, getting high,
13:10 getting laid, not necessarily in that order, but that was pretty well the events I was
13:16 a behavior I was participating in. At 28, so from about 18 to 28, Miss Kay and I, she was with me.
13:25 She left high school and went with me to lose an attack. I just kept getting worse and worse
13:31 and worse and worse until by the time I was 28, one day I looked around. I had run Miss Kay off,
13:38 run the kids off, so I thought I'm like a dog chasing his tail and my little woman, Miss Kay said,
13:47 "Don't you go talk to Bill Smith?" He's a preacher and just listen to what he has to say.
13:54 So I did and when he shared Jesus and the good news, God becoming flesh 2022 years ago. He said,
14:03 "By the way, we all count time by Jesus Christ." He's that big. Out of all the humanity who ever
14:11 lived, our calendar is based on just one of them, Jesus Christ. He died on a cross when I saw that
14:19 and to remove all my sin, I had many. So I thought, "You may need to be wiped clean." He said, "Wipe clean."
14:27 And after he died was raised from the dead, the resurrection, there's life beyond planet earth.
14:35 Immortality is riding on the death barrel and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
14:41 All he requires is you love him and you love your neighbor. I said, "I think I can do that."
14:49 The old preacher said, "Trust God and try. You'll make some mistakes. Just remember.
14:56 All your past sins have been removed. None of your future sins are counted against you
15:03 because Jesus got us out from under the written code. And that's why I wrote the book, uncensored.
15:11 Because when I saw Jesus canceled the written code, I'm like, "Whoo!" And he brought us under a
15:20 system called grace. It's a free gift. And when I saw that, I said, "Man, no wonder I would try
15:27 to do good. I couldn't do good." It's like the apostle Paul in Romans 7. This is this. Here's the
15:34 old apostle Paul and this is a doozy. What's this? Watch his logic. Let's see right here.
15:44 Here's the apostle Paul and it's a doozy of a letter. Watch this. We know that the law is
15:55 spiritual. Nothing wrong with the Ten Commandments. The children obey your father and mother. Don't
16:02 murder. Don't commit adultery. Don't steal. Don't lie. Don't cove it. I'm like, "Yeah, that would work."
16:08 Unfortunately, the apostle Paul is going to remind us that we didn't keep it. We can't keep it.
16:16 Not one. Jesus shows up, he keeps it, and then gets us out from under it. You're like, "Whoo,
16:25 watch. We know that the law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual." That's where I was at 28.
16:34 Soul is a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. What I want to do, I do not do,
16:42 but what I hate to do. If I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. Nothing wrong
16:50 with the code, but there's a whole lot wrong with me. Well, look, we're all right. As it is,
16:55 it's no longer I myself who do it. It's sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me that is
17:03 in my sinful nature. That's why when you come to Jesus, your sinful nature is cut away. It's taken
17:12 away. You're like, "Whoo, let's see. I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out."
17:20 That's the way I was until I was 28. For what I do is not the good I want to do. No, the evil I do
17:28 not want to do. This I keep on doing. That's an explanation of what you currently see in America,
17:36 because there's a mighty throng of individuals who are operating like I used to, but watch. Now,
17:44 if I do what I do not want to do, it's no longer I who do it. It's sin living in me that does it.
17:50 The evil one. So I find this law at work. What I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
17:58 For in my inner being, I delighting God's law, but I see another law at work in the
18:03 members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, making me a prisoner of the law of sin
18:12 at work within my members. What a wretched man I am. Who will rescue me from this body of death?
18:24 Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. You're like, that's what happened to me at 28.
18:30 And now looking back at it, I always give them the sinful part of my past up front,
18:36 because the cancel culture is going to find out about what you did probably anyway. And they look
18:44 for mistakes you make, and they are unforgiving to the core of their being, because they do the same
18:52 things, yet they cancel others for doing what they all do. So the wrath of God will be pouring
19:02 out on them. By the way, Romans chapter two, if you want to just get a little update on why I wrote
19:09 this book, you have no excuse, you pass judgment on someone else. Or if whatever points you judge
19:19 the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
19:28 So it's just the cancel culture is a group of sinners that's looking up sins of others,
19:36 and they will never forgive you. Remember Jesus when he died, he said, you know what?
19:45 Forgive them, Father. They don't know what they're doing. So Jesus keeps the law. Look what they did
19:52 to him. 100% flawlessly perfect. Never violated the law. By the way, he wrote it. He wrote it,
20:03 and then kept it, and then got us out from under it and put us under grace. What a wonderful thing
20:10 Jesus did for us. So now I have life and immortality, and the horrors are gone and the drunkenness is
20:17 gone. I haven't said a cuss word probably in 50 years. Someone says, can you ever clean your mouth
20:24 up? I said, Oh, those are the easy ones. Yeah, that's an easy one for sure. And the thing that's
20:29 incredible about your story, Phil, and we'll certainly get more into the book here in just a second.
20:33 Whenever I got to spend time with you at your home and in your studio last year, when you had me
20:37 on unashamed, the thing that kept coming to mind is that you, sir, and your family, y'all are
20:43 marinated in the gospel, marinated in the scripture. And one thing about you, and you've said this before,
20:49 is there's a difference between studying the Bible so that you can memorize it, which is not a bad
20:54 thing versus reading it so much that it just comes out of you, which this wasn't exactly the plan,
20:59 but I think this segues nicely into the new book, which again, thank you so much for sending me an
21:03 advanced copy of this. It's uncanceled finding and peace in a culture of accusation, shame,
21:08 and condemnation. Oh, yeah, go ahead. Hop back in. Well, I would just go to remind the people who
21:13 are listening. You want to hear something that's wild. Listen, this right here. You folks who are
21:19 listening. Am I dreaming? Or is this true? Let's see. Here's the apostle Paul. By the way,
21:28 blasphemer, the apostle Paul, murderer, a copy, persecutor. He was arresting people, throw them
21:36 in prison. And Jesus said, I think I'm going to pay him a little visit, a personal visit. So
21:43 he struck him down on a road going into Damascus. And he, who are you? He said, I'm the one you're
21:49 persecuting. I got a job for you. He didn't even argue with Jesus. He told Timothy, what's this?
21:57 Mark this. Meaning what I'm fixing to say, you might ought to take note of this very carefully.
22:05 Mark this. There will be terrible times in the last days. Hebrews 1 says, God worked through the
22:13 prophets many times and various ways in the past. But now he's spoken to us by his son. He reminds
22:21 us that we now have entered the era of the last days. And people better look out too.
22:29 There will be terrible times in the last days. Let's see if this is familiar. And let's see if the
22:36 United States of America, a lot of people inside it, are guilty of this charge. People will be lovers
22:45 of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents.
22:57 Just look at all our sons and daughters in the streets. And now they're polluting,
23:02 shooting, spray paint, f-view on buildings. You're like, what in the world? Young people.
23:10 They disobey their parents. They are ungrateful. You would think they would appreciate
23:18 a free culture. But they just, they're unhappy. They're belligerent. They're going around
23:30 finding people and blaming them, getting them fired. They are unholy. They're without without
23:38 love. You say without love. What people don't realize is that we're living in some trying times
23:46 because we've lost the ability or renounced the truth that God said, love me and love your
23:59 neighbor. Those are the two greatest commands in the Bible. The Apostle Paul is telling Timothy
24:06 these people in the last days what it's going to look like. You say, good night. The more you
24:12 read in that list, the more it looks like we are sure enough in the last days. Well, what you're
24:17 going to see is people without love. Check this next one. Unforgiving. They look up and they try
24:25 to get somebody fired or they want people to, and they, you know, they're trying to ruin their life
24:33 over and over and you see it growing. Unforgiving. They came to Jesus. Peter said, Lord, how many
24:42 times should we forgive someone who sins against us? Seven. In America, you probably won't even get
24:50 three strikes. You'll probably call out on strike number one. You're like, why are they so quick to
24:56 condemn? They are unforgiving. They don't know God. Therefore, he gives him over to a depraved man.
25:06 What we're seeing swirling all around us is depravity. Watch. They're unforgiving.
25:12 They're slanderous without self-control. Just the drugs. I mean, you're looking out of New York.
25:23 What? What? What? These inner cities. I'm just saying, even out here in the country, we see the
25:30 same things you see in the cities. We're like, come on. Without self-control, they're brutal,
25:37 not lovers of the good. They're treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure. Everything
25:46 now, you have to have women jumping up and down with their boobs, flopping, or you can't sell it.
25:51 And I'm looking at it. I'm like, all I want to do is watch a ball game for crying out loud,
25:57 and they put all this stuff in it. Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
26:03 having a form of God in this, but denying its power. So when you look at it, you say, man,
26:09 that's suck at Timothy chapter three. There'll be terrible times in the last days. I see them
26:16 coming, don't you? Absolutely, Phil. And I mean, that's one of the great reasons why you did write
26:20 this book and canceled. And it kind of goes back to what you said earlier about, you know, in modern
26:25 modernity, we get one strike, right? So you're right in the throes of Duck Dynasty. And back in
26:30 December 18th of 2013, your network that broadcasted your show A&E announced that you were being
26:36 suspended for the show from the show because of a GQ article that came out. In that interview,
26:41 you paraphrase scripture, 1 Corinthians 6, 9 and 10, talking about don't be deceived, neither
26:46 adulterers, no idolaters, male prostitutes, homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards,
26:51 the slanderers, the swindlers, they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's
26:55 not right. And of course, those comments didn't go over well because you made other comments about
26:59 you questioning homosexual impulses, you know, rightfully condemning the lifestyle. And A&E
27:04 suspended you 48 hours, 48 hours later, you're welcome back because of the uproar from your fans.
27:09 And that was a really trying time for you. You mentioned in the book, it lost you what you called,
27:13 you know, a cool $10 million, which we don't necessarily need to get into that. But I do want
27:17 to key into something there because Phil, that was your show. You were quoting scripture and it
27:23 costs you, right? And you were doing this interview, you were doing it trying to be well-meaning and
27:29 upfront and honest with somebody. And your words were kind of taken out of context and context was
27:33 added. But the interesting thing that you bring up in your book, and this is from very, very earlier
27:38 in your in your book, it was in chapter one, you say cancel culture may be effective at forcing
27:42 people into submission, but it does nothing to persuade. And I thought that was very critical
27:48 to understanding what happened to you when you were kicked off your own show, because who was
27:52 persuaded to change their mindset on homosexuality because of that situation? Was anybody? You know,
27:58 everyone, it just kind of muddied the waters. But I want you to talk a little bit more about that
28:02 situation with the GQ article that came out and how cancel culture is basically doing nothing to
28:07 make things better. It's just making people more angry. Yeah, exactly. In other words, what
28:14 I didn't realize is when he asked me the question, he had just come from Jason. And he, what the
28:21 question he asked Jason before he got to me, well, you know, I'm seated over here in this same chair.
28:27 Jason was seated at the end of that couch there in Jeptha, that other boy, man, was seated next to
28:34 him. I think Willie and Si were over here. Well, I didn't even know who the guy was. And I never
28:40 heard of the magazine. I asked him, I said, what is GQ stand for? And when he walked in the door,
28:46 they said this is so and so with GQ magazine, I said, what's GQ stand for? Because I really
28:52 didn't know. And he said, Oh, you know what it is. I said, I have no idea what it is. So what he said,
29:00 it stands for gentlemen's quarterly. I said, evidently, I'm not running with the gentleman
29:05 that you are. But I didn't know what kind of magazine it was. The question he asked Jason was,
29:10 listen, first question out of his mouth. He said, do you actually Jason believe that we
29:18 that you didn't have sex with your girlfriend before you married her? You're trying to get us
29:27 to believe that? Jay said, I don't care whether you believe it or not. That's what happened. I
29:33 waited till we married. He said, but I don't care if you believe it or not. He moved to Jeptha and
29:39 Jeptha said he asked him, now I don't know this is going on before he gets to me. He asked Jeptha,
29:46 he said, let's see, how did he word that? He said, oh yeah, he said, when did you start your
29:54 sexual sins? How were you? And Jeptha just looked at him and said, he just kind of gave him a,
30:03 no, I'm not answering. Well, then it gets to me, do you believe homosexual behaviors are sin?
30:10 I just thought I'd give him first Corinthians 6, 9, and 10 off the top of my head like you did.
30:16 I just gave him the text because I thought, if he wants to argue about that, you know,
30:21 argue to God about it. This is what the apostle Paul wrote to the church at Carran, you know,
30:26 don't be deceived. And that all of the goes with it. So 10 sins are listed there. One of them is
30:32 homosexual behavior. I figured that ought to do it. But what I didn't know was it was all a setup.
30:38 So once they twisted it around, I kept watching the news thinking, I wonder if someone's finally
30:46 going to figure out it's a Bible verse. It took three weeks. The news media and the cancel culture,
30:53 wherever they are, it took them three weeks for someone to say, he just quoted the Bible verse
30:58 that talks about that particular sin. And what they all left out was is the final part of that.
31:06 And that with these sins were what some of you were, you were like this, but you've been watched,
31:15 you've been sanctified, you've been justified. So the apostle Paul was letting him know, look,
31:21 you can come out of these sexual sins and this, you know, slanderous swindlers, you can, that all
31:29 that can be wiped away. And you can be sanctified and setified and justified. So if they left that,
31:36 they conveniently left that little part out about Jesus can solve their problems. So to this day,
31:43 but one of the reasons I did write the book, I just wanted to look and see what we have here,
31:49 my man, is a loss of love for God and our fellow man. Check this out. First John chapter three,
32:03 dear friends, let us love one another. Remember, Jesus said, greatest commands in the Bible,
32:10 look God and love your neighbor. Dear friends, let us love one another. For love comes from God.
32:18 Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God
32:31 because God is love. What the cancel culture do not understand. I sincerely love them. I'm trying
32:43 to get them to come to Jesus so their sins can be removed and they can be raised from the dead
32:51 for crying out loud. Right. I don't hate anybody on this earth. I love them. You say, well,
32:57 did you ever come back and get on television and try to answer all that crap they were throwing
33:04 out there? I said, no, you said, what about the people who fired you, A&E indefinite hiatus?
33:11 They told me they said, well, it actually wasn't firing you. We would just put you on a temporary
33:20 hole. I said, yeah, tell me about it. I said, y'all ever get an irate phone call from me? They said,
33:26 no. I said, did I ever say anything negative about you at any time during these proceedings
33:33 when all this stuff is going on TV? I said, well, did I raise cane? He said, you never said a word.
33:39 But cause what it is, whoever does not love does not know God because God is love. So I'm trying
33:52 to get the cancel culture to stop going around ruining people's lives and go to their brothers
34:01 and sisters, their fellow members of the human race with kindness and goodness and joy. Joy,
34:08 love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. I'm wanting
34:16 them to be that way instead of the way they currently are, because the evil one, it'd be the only one
34:24 that can make a hater out of you. You know, as long as chapter two, they're called, a lot of them
34:29 were called, they're puzzle filed. The only place in the battle that's about chapter one,
34:34 about verse 28 and following. They are God haters. And that's the sad part in how the is.
34:43 When I think the thing is, feel that you brought it that was interesting is you talk about love,
34:46 but in our modern culture, love supposedly means letting people do whatever they feel like doing.
34:53 So a good buddy of mine, I had him on my show and he's somewhere between atheists and agnostic.
34:58 And finally, he wasn't rude about it, but he said, Kyle, why the F do you care if I believe in God
35:03 or not? And I didn't know he was going to say that to me. So I was kind of caught off guard.
35:07 And the only thing I could think to respond, Phil, was because I love you, brother,
35:11 because I want you to have what I have, because if we get to the end of our lives and we're just
35:16 worm food and the lights get turned out, then it's no big deal. Like you were right. Guess what?
35:20 We're both worm food. We don't exist anymore. But if there is everlasting life, and if Jesus is
35:25 our way to that salvation, I want you to have that. But that's not the world we live in right now.
35:30 The world we live in right now is this is who I am. You have to accept me for who I am,
35:34 or you're a hater and you're a bigot. And that's exactly what cancel culture does.
35:38 But Phil, one thing that I really liked that you did in your book, which I was not expecting,
35:43 because you did dip your toe a little bit into the political arena by making some appearances
35:47 with Donald Trump and all that stuff happening around 2016 time period. But you have this quote
35:53 from uncanceled that I thought was great. And it was this, what those who call for deprogramming me
35:58 don't realize about me is that I put zero hope in Donald Trump. I liked a lot of his policies,
36:03 but Trump didn't die for me. He wasn't raised from the dead for me. I've met him several times
36:08 and I found him to be a pretty nice guy in person. But one thing I know is that I could vote for him
36:12 a thousand times and still be lost in my sins. He's just a man. Instead, all of my hope is in Jesus
36:19 and he alone is capable of reprogramming me. That was my favorite quote from the entire book. And
36:23 the reason was is because we all get wrapped around the axle with politics. Politics is not
36:30 local anymore. It's federal and we got to get our guy into the White House so that he can put
36:34 our favorite people in Supreme Court and so that all these other things can happen in our state
36:38 houses and blah, blah, blah on and on. But people are forgetting the fact that they are at the
36:42 praised sinful human being. And if Trump had won in 2020, they're still a depraved sinful human
36:49 being regardless of what they wanted to happen. But I guess why did you decide to kind of go ahead and
36:54 you know, almost attack the worship that we've created around our political figures?
37:00 Well, I've watched it unfold and when he lost, I said, you know what? I'm just
37:08 I'm tired of seeing the way this thing goes. Listen to this. This is Romans 13. Verse 8,
37:19 "Let no debt remain outstanding." Hey, you may accept the continuing debt to love one another.
37:30 The reason I wrote the book was to let the people know who tried to cancel me. I love you folks.
37:40 I dearly do. The commandments, whoever for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law.
37:51 Just think about that. The commandments do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal,
37:58 do not covet, and whatever other commandment there may be are summed up in this one rule.
38:06 Love your neighbor as yourself. And here's the key. Verse 10, and I live by this because we all should.
38:16 Therefore, love does no harm to its neighbor. Love does no harm. The cancel culture, that's all
38:29 they do is harm and they get after it. We got you. I'm saying, why don't we try our best to love
38:37 one another and I don't think you're going to be able to do it without faith in Jesus Christ.
38:42 And I'll just present the case to one after the other. This one is in book form. I'm just trying
38:48 to get them to at least investigate Jesus of Nazareth. But it's like pulling teeth. But it's
38:59 been rough all the way since Jesus was here. Look what they did to him. Look what they did to all
39:04 the apostles, but John, they killed them, they slaughtered them. So it's bad now. But during
39:12 the days of the Roman Empire, I'm sorry to say it was probably worse. But we're getting there.
39:18 Yeah, it was definitely worse. There's a there's a great book that's on our book list on our website
39:22 where it really details the first 1000 years of Christian history. It's called tried by fire. And
39:27 it's like, you are not being pulled apart by two separate animals. You're not being dragged down
39:32 stone steps until you're bludgeoned to death. So I think things are they're bad, but they're not
39:37 quite that bad. But one of the things Phil that I think you said, it's like pulling tea trying to
39:41 get these people to love one another and to see Jesus and I completely understand that and see that.
39:46 Part of it is because truth. And I mean, capital T truth is being attacked in our modern culture.
39:52 And you actually brought this up in the book where you point out that the Cambridge dictionary
39:55 actually has an alternate definition of truth, which would be one of the easiest things in the
39:59 world to define. But now it's defined as a factor principle that is thought to be true
40:03 by most people. It's so thought to be true by most people suddenly make something a statement of truth.
40:10 But we live in this postmodern culture where you're not allowed to say something is true.
40:14 Because if you say something is true, that means it's exclusive. And it's if it's exclusive,
40:18 then we can't have true equity, right? We can't have all these buzzword things.
40:22 But from your perspective, is that the thing that's the most damning about our modern society? Is that
40:27 truth in and of itself is being undermined? You are correct. Listen to this. If you hold to my
40:36 teaching, Jesus said this to the Jews. They've gathered around him. If you hold to my teaching,
40:42 you're really my disciples. Just do what I say. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
40:50 set you free. What's their answer? They answered, we're Abraham's descendants. We've never been
40:57 slaves of anyone, which was a lie. How can you say that we shall be set free? Jesus replied,
41:04 I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave has no permanent place in
41:13 the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
41:21 I know you're Abraham's children, descendants, yet you're ready to kill me because you have no room
41:28 for my word. You're like, boy, that was written 2,000 right at it 2,000 years ago. You're like,
41:37 wait a minute. And you do what you've heard from your father. I'm telling you what I have seen
41:45 in the father's presence, and you do what your father. You say, evidently, we have two fathers
41:49 here. Well, 2,000 years later, let's see. If you were Abraham's children, you would do the things
41:57 Abraham did. As it is, you're determined to kill me. That's twice. He said that a man who has told
42:04 you the truth that I heard from God, Abraham did not do such things. You're doing the things your
42:11 own father does. That's twice. He said, I have my father and you have a different father. Watch.
42:19 We're not illegitimate children. They protested. The only father we have is God himself. Jesus said
42:25 to him, if God were your father, you would love me. I came from God and now I'm here. I've not come
42:34 on my own, but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? And it's muddled 2,000 years later
42:42 too, because you're unable to hear what I say. Here's why they don't see the truth. You belong
42:50 to your father, the devil. Now we've got them identified, their father, and you want to carry
42:57 out your father's desire. He was a murderer all the way back to Cain and Abel. He was a murderer
43:05 from the beginning. Check this out. Not holding to the truth. He was a murderer not holding to the
43:15 truth, but there's no truth in him. That's where all this is coming from, the source. When he lies,
43:23 he speaks his native language for he is a liar and the father of lies. You're like Jesus is putting
43:33 the blame on the evil one. Yeah, because I tell you the truth, that's about four times he's mentioned.
43:40 You don't believe me. What's this? Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? He said, where have I
43:48 gone? Where have I sinned? They're all sitting there listening to him. He said, that's how you
43:52 can know where the truth is. Jesus never made a mistake. He is the truth. And you reject him,
44:00 you will never find it forevermore. You will never find it because the source of truth is Jesus'
44:07 cracks. So it's not like something like rocket science. He just tell him, if I'm telling the truth,
44:16 why don't you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear
44:24 is that you do not belong to God. So let's face it, unless you belong to God, there's not going to be
44:31 any truth, and there's certainly not going to be any love. I would just think that I want them just
44:37 to stop a minute and say, think about what y'all are doing and the way you're doing it. I mean,
44:44 have you at least investigated the one you count time by? Jesus at least just looked into it and
44:52 see what he said. You got Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, they all told the same story. Someone
44:59 said, well, why would God be so redundant and repeat himself? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, why does
45:08 he have him given the same message, the same person, what was said and what happened? Why would he do
45:15 it four times? So they can't miss it. Right. You can't miss it. But Phil, you brought up something
45:22 that's incredibly key and it's investigating the truth of Jesus because whenever I talk to friends
45:27 of mine that are that are honest seekers, you know, they get hung up on dinosaurs and they get hung
45:32 up on Jonah in the well and they get hung up on Noah's Ark, they get hung up on these things.
45:36 And all those things are important. Those things deserve investigation too. But I'm like, let's
45:40 save ourselves some time here. And let's go to the person of Jesus because there's no more
45:45 certifiable fact from antiquity than Jesus and Middle Eastern Jewish man was condemned by his own
45:50 people. The Jews was handed over to the Romans was killed on a Roman cross. The Romans were
45:56 batting 1000 for crucifixion. Nobody accidentally made it out alive. But you need to investigate
46:01 whether or not you can believe that he rose on the third day. That is the thing that you need
46:06 to base the entirety of your life off of. And then we can work out from there. You know what I mean?
46:10 Yeah, it's one thing for someone to say something and possibly you won't believe it. But look,
46:17 you get about the middle of Matthew in chapter 16. From that time on, Jesus began to explain to
46:24 his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders,
46:31 chief priests and teachers of the law, that he must be killed. And on the third day be raised
46:39 to life. You turn a page. That's Matthew chapter 16 in the middle of it. He hasn't said that up to
46:47 now. So he brings it up. I turn one page. The son of man is going to be betrayed into the hands of
46:54 me and they will kill him. And on the third day he'll be raised to life. And the disciples were
47:01 filled with grief. You turn another page. Now I'm looking at Matthew chapter 20. We're going up
47:09 to Jerusalem and the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law.
47:15 This is the third time they were, I've said this, I've read this, they will condemn him to death,
47:21 we'll turn him over to the Gentiles, the Romans, to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the
47:27 third day he'll be raised to life. So he begins to tell them in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
47:34 this is what I'm going to do. It's one thing where somebody comes along and says, hey,
47:38 let me just tell you something. We're going up to Jerusalem and I'm fixing to die. They're going
47:45 kill me. And in three days I'll be raised from the dead. It's one thing to say something like that.
47:51 But when someone says it repeatedly and then does it, you better listen to him. Don't mess with him.
48:00 Anyone that can predict their own death and follow through with it, like that's a pretty
48:04 good thing that you should probably base the rest of your life on as we do with time. And Phil,
48:09 one thing I wanted to make sure I got into with you is kind of a continuation of my time that I spent
48:14 with you and Al down there in Louisiana on Unashamed. We talked about manhood and masculinity and
48:19 specifically how that seems like it's a dichotomy from the godliness of the church. It seems like
48:24 the manly men are off doing one thing and the godly men are inside the church doing their thing.
48:28 That's a dichotomy of a lot of people. And actually, again, in uncancelled, you sort of address that.
48:33 So I'm going to read this quote here and then get you to give me a little bit more context on it.
48:36 But this is from later on in the book, you say, you may have contemplated a question such as,
48:41 what would I do if I were dragged before a federal court where the judge and jury were Christ haters
48:45 and I was required to answer for my faith in Jesus? And then you go on to kind of describe,
48:50 you know, if you're just culturally Christian, you won't stand up for Christ. But then you say this,
48:53 to you, he was just a fair haired man with long hair, like the Jesus depicted in the paintings of
48:59 the Renaissance. Your savior is just a lamp heading nice guy. And I will tell you, that is one of the
49:05 main reasons that's there's a reason why there's a lion over my shoulder right now is because when
49:10 people look at the Lamb of God and Lion of Judah, they ignore one completely and barely describe the
49:15 other. And so they talk about the Lamb of God, but no one really likes to talk about the Lion of
49:19 Judah. They don't like to talk about the Jesus that comes back in Revelation with a tattoo in his leg
49:24 and his robe dipped in blood and a sword in his mouth. And they don't want to talk about the fact
49:28 that he cleared out the temple, not once, but there's evidence that he cleared it out twice,
49:32 a very violent premeditated act. But for your, from your perspective, you're considered by many,
49:37 many to be a very manly guy, very typically manly, you like to hunt, you know, you're in to meet,
49:41 you're into all those different things that a lot of guys are into four wheel drive trucks and mud
49:45 in the whole nine yards of football. But why is there such a seeming dichotomy between manly men
49:51 and godly men? The power of the evil one, the power of the evil one works in and through human
50:00 beings. Check this out. Here's a good thing to remember. Because of your stubbornness and your
50:11 unrepentant part, you're storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath,
50:16 when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God will give to each person according to what he
50:23 has done. For those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, he'll give
50:32 eternal life. For those who are self seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,
50:39 there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who
50:45 does evil first for the Jew, then for the Gentile, but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does
50:51 good. First for the Jew, then for the Gentile, God, there's no not show favoritism. Manhood is
50:58 flying away. And if you're talking to a human being, and I've done it right here in this living
51:06 room multiple times, and they're confused about they don't even know whether they're a male or
51:15 female. And I talked to one guy, we converted him, and he said, you know, I was a woman for three
51:24 years, and I said, I doubt it. But tell me your story. So he said, I said, why did you ever really
51:35 say I'm blowing smoke here, I'm lying my head off and claiming I'm a female.
51:44 He showed me a picture of himself when he was a female for three years claiming to be, I said,
51:50 why did you do that? You start looking like a woman. He said, because I had this voice in my head,
51:58 it said, you're really a woman. You're really a woman. You're really a woman. He said, Satan
52:05 was whispering that in my ear. And he said, but I knew better. I said, so how did you get out of it?
52:14 He said, I said, by the way, if it's worth anything to you, you look better as a woman than you do a
52:21 man, dude. I said, but you're a man and get nothing another get up. And I said, you know, they gave
52:27 the medicine where he'd had the boobs, the whole thing. But he said, feel I was just listening to
52:34 Satan whispering my ear for that entire time. He said, I knew I was a man, born a man. He said,
52:40 I was just telling a lie and I knew it. So when he finally got out monday, we support him and I was
52:46 so he's doing well. And I love him for doing that for making the change. He had about 25, 26,
52:54 he come out of all that stuff. Now he helps the kingdom by doing the work of the kingdom. So
53:03 he's a good dude. That's an incredible story. And Phil, to be honest with you, I didn't plan to
53:08 ask you about it, but you just kind of made me think about it. Every time you talk seemingly,
53:12 whether it's any episode of unashamed or when you talk in person, you always have some sort of an
53:16 anecdote like the one you just gave me about somebody that you and your family helped,
53:21 you know, preach the gospel to and get them saved. You have countless stories of people
53:26 driving up to your it's gated now, but driving up to your property and, you know,
53:31 basically coming into the house. They just coming. They keep coming. And you take them down to the
53:37 Washita River and you baptize them right then and there or you baptize them wherever there's a body
53:42 of water or a bathtub. And Phil, I just got to say, it's a challenge to a guy like me that's so bold
53:48 and so, you know, big in the things that I say and talk about that I have to make sure that the
53:52 gospel's still at the center of those things, because you're having a true impact for the kingdom.
53:58 Just by living your life, you're not an evangelist by trade. You're not paid
54:02 to be a professional Christian because you work at a church or something like that.
54:06 You're just a dude, but talk to me a little bit about that. Is it not kind of crazy to you that,
54:11 you know, however many times a year, dozens of times, if not hundreds of times, you're putting
54:15 your hands on somebody and dumping them under the water and, you know, as a symbol of them,
54:19 you know, having their sins washed away. What an incredible life that you're leading in that way.
54:24 Yeah, well, Jesus said it and it's simple but profound. When in Matthew, he said,
54:33 all authority, this is after his resurrection. He said, all authority in heaven and on earth
54:40 has been given to me. I just died and stayed dead for three days and I'm back. I'm paraphrasing it.
54:46 I'm back alive. They couldn't kill me and get away with it. I'm still here. Therefore,
54:53 I mean, if you want to talk about authority, I said, man, he'd just beat death for me.
54:57 Therefore, we're going to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
55:03 Son and Holy Spirit. And I will be with you to the end of the age. It's simple. It's direct.
55:10 This is what you do. Therefore, for all the ones to go to the church buildings every week,
55:18 if all you ever get is a couple of hours one day a week and someone else is doing the talking
55:26 and you're just seated on a pew. If that's all you get, you need to get up, get up and on Monday
55:36 and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and Friday and Saturday before I come back up here to this
55:43 structure and go in and sit on the pew, I need to be actively involved in making disciples
55:51 in some form. Because if you don't, this thing can overwhelm us because we're not offering our
55:59 bodies as sacrifices, which is your spiritual act of worship. Offer your bodies that Romans 12
56:09 check us out, which that was a great question you had. Therefore, I urge your brothers in
56:15 due of God's mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.
56:23 This is all the time 24/7, which is your spiritual worship. Do not conform any longer
56:31 to the pattern of this world. Don't run with them. Be separate. Be transformed by the renewing of
56:40 your mind. Our work for the for the kingdom starts in here and we act upon it and check this out.
56:48 You say, so there's a love problem. Watch what the Apostle Paul says in this chapter, Romans 12.
56:55 Offer your bodies to live in sacrifice. Love must be sincere. Hate what is able, cling to what's good.
57:03 Be devoted to one another and brotherly love. This is all the time. Honor one another about
57:09 yourselves, above yourselves, all the time. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual
57:17 fervor what you were explaining to the audience. You say, you seem to be at this
57:23 Monday, Tuesday morning to you. I'll just go up there and say a few words, free of charge.
57:31 I'll just go up there and give them a lesson. I will say that we converted some law enforcement
57:37 people who were working as my bodyguards and they heard the gospel, so I've baptized them.
57:42 And one of them came up to me when we first started over there, where we are,
57:46 little place next to the college over there. And he said, Robinson, I don't want to hurt your
57:51 feelings. He said, but we've arrested about two thirds of the congregation at one time or another.
57:56 I said, hey, that was a good word, man. We're trying to do some trying to help y'all out a little bit.
58:02 See if your spiritual fervor be joyful and hope, patient and affliction. Just look at what this
58:09 is covered. This is all the time. Faithful in prayer, share with God's people who are in need.
58:14 What is practice hospitality? If you start adding up and think you're if you begin to add it up on
58:23 how much it's costing it to practice hospitality, you won't do it. It's expensive, but you're doing
58:31 it for others. Bless those who persecute you all the time. Bless and do not curse. Rejoice
58:39 for those who rejoice. More and for those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Just think about
58:45 the cancel culture. Even seeing a group of individuals that all they want to do is live in harmony with
58:54 you. Tell them, come on. Don't be proud. Be willing to associate with people of low position. You're
59:02 like, boy, we need to put that in practice all the time. Don't be conceited. Don't repay
59:09 anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it's possible,
59:18 as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Don't take revenge, dear friends.
59:26 Leave room for God's wrath. Just love them. Cut them some slack. Let it go. That's why the cancel
59:33 culture needs to understand. I love them. I don't hate them. It would be great if they could hear
59:39 those words and actually apply them. Last question of the day, because I know you have some duck
59:44 hunting you got to get taken care of here in just a second. But last question, if you look back on
59:48 your life, even now, because you talk about a lot, you're in your mid 70s. You know that for you,
59:53 you don't have as much time as maybe your sons or grandkids do or those types of things. You've
59:57 said it a bunch. There's a lot of things that you could be known for. You could be known for starting
1:00:01 duck commander. You could be known for being a professional hunter. You could be known
1:00:05 for being a college quarterback. You could be known for being a New York Times best-selling
1:00:09 author. You can be known for a lot of things. And I think I have a pretty good idea of what
1:00:12 you're going to say. But when your time here on this planet is done, Phil, what do you want Phil
1:00:17 Robertson to be known for? Jesus number one. Jesus number one. That's all I would hope
1:00:26 that they would say. Well, the old guy finally gone, you know, the old duck hunter, you know,
1:00:31 what, what's that written on his tombstone? It just says Jesus number one.
1:00:36 Absolutely. Hey, that is a great message for all of us, regardless of the work we're doing,
1:00:42 regardless of the life we're trying to build for ourselves or for our families. If you don't have
1:00:47 Jesus, you are absolutely completely lost. But Phil, I really appreciate your time today. But
1:00:51 that is all for me. Is there anything else you want to get off your chest? Nope. That's a pretty
1:00:55 well covered. All right, Phil Robertson. Thank you for coming on Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
