0:02 - This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
0:21 I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:23 Let's get into it.
0:24 Our guys today got a special guest on the podcast.
0:26 His name is Kevin Sorbo.
0:27 So he is an actor and he's best known for his role
0:29 as Hercules in the TV series Hercules,
0:32 the legendary journeys and as Captain Dylan Hunt
0:34 in Andromeda and he's also starred in movies
0:36 like God's Not Dead and Let There Be Light
0:38 and What If and a bunch of other stuff.
0:39 But guys, this was such a fun conversation
0:41 because we were talking off air.
0:42 We didn't really have a whole lot of time today.
0:44 So we're definitely gonna have him back on in the future
0:45 to talk about some more stuff,
0:46 but we kind of had limited time to get this in.
0:48 But we started with a lot of politics
0:50 'cause if you don't know, he is an outspoken Christian
0:52 conservative and that has had a tremendous impact
0:55 impact negatively on his career.
0:57 And we talked about that in the show,
0:58 but he's talked a lot about the stuff
1:00 that's currently going on in our country.
1:01 So that's where we started.
1:02 We talked about with the DOJ and the FBI
1:04 apparently targeting former President Trump
1:07 and other Americans and things like that.
1:09 We talked about what's going on in culture
1:11 and we kind of bounced around a lot.
1:12 We did talk about his acting career
1:14 'cause obviously we needed to talk about Hercules
1:16 and some of the movies he's been in.
1:18 And we talked about how a lot of the Christian films
1:21 that we see produced today are so much better
1:22 than Christian films back in the day
1:24 and how it's kind of turning the overall narrative
1:26 in terms of Christian filmmaking.
1:28 We talked about truth.
1:29 We talked about narrative.
1:30 We talked about some near misses he had in his career early on
1:33 that he thought at the time were the worst days of his life,
1:35 but it only opened the door later,
1:37 got at something else planned for him in his career.
1:40 We talked about some stuff he's got coming up.
1:42 He's got a Western that he's gonna be filming
1:44 in my home state here of Oklahoma.
1:45 And he may or may not have invited me
1:47 to be a bad guy on the show and kill me off early on.
1:50 And I'm fine with that.
1:50 I'm gonna have to grow my beard out
1:52 and let it get a little bit more nasty,
1:53 but we can certainly make that happen.
1:54 But guys, we talked about so much,
1:56 but there was an interesting question I asked him
1:57 at the very, very end.
1:58 And it was if he could only leave one piece of art
2:01 that he's ever made, right?
2:02 So one character in a movie or one character
2:05 in a TV series or something like that.
2:07 If he could leave one thing for humanity,
2:09 what would it be and why?
2:10 And I think his answer is gonna be very, very interesting
2:12 to you.
2:13 All right, but before we go any further,
2:15 I've got to remind you guys about one of my favorite sponsors
2:18 ever in the history of this podcast.
2:19 And that is Casey cattle company.
2:21 So you guys know I'm very, very typical
2:23 and that I like to eat meat.
2:24 I love eating beef and especially if it's beef
2:26 that someone else cooks for me.
2:28 But if I have to be the one to cook it,
2:29 I want it to be a high quality piece of steak,
2:31 a high quality piece of beef.
2:33 And that is exactly what Casey cattle company specializes in.
2:36 And guys, I've told you this before,
2:37 there are a lot of meat delivery,
2:38 subscription services out there,
2:40 but only one of them is US military veteran owned,
2:42 US military veteran operated.
2:44 And all of their beef, chicken and pork products
2:46 are produced here in the good old United States.
2:48 And that's Kansas City cattle company,
2:49 Casey cattle company.
2:50 And they specialize in Wagyu beef.
2:52 So I had heard of Wagyu before,
2:53 but it wasn't until they sent me this care package
2:55 full of it that I got to experience it for myself,
2:57 a Wagyu beef.
2:58 It's a breed of cattle known for its mutations
3:00 that allow for a whole bunch more marbling inside of the meat.
3:03 And that is what makes it good.
3:04 So here recently, I used one of their,
3:07 I cooks up some of their Wagyu skirt steak.
3:09 And so I don't really do a whole lot with skirt steak,
3:12 but I marinated this up and I made tacos with it.
3:15 And so you put some lime on there and, you know,
3:17 use whatever marinade you want.
3:18 There's a lot of great marinades.
3:19 They even sell rub, you know,
3:21 Casey cattle company does.
3:22 They have a steak rub that you could put on there,
3:23 but it's great for tacos, great for a lot of stuff guys.
3:25 They sell everything from Wagyu steaks,
3:27 Wagyu rose, Pashirase chicken, Pashirase Berkshire pork,
3:31 Wagyu bacon, cheeseburger, bratwurst, and, and,
3:34 the now world famous Wagyu gourmet hot dogs,
3:36 Food and Wine magazine named them the best hot dog
3:38 in the world.
3:39 And I can attest to it, they are incredible.
3:41 They even called it a tube steak,
3:42 which I think is hilarious because it literally tastes
3:44 like a steak on a bun.
3:45 You guys have got to try out their products.
3:47 So go to kcattlecompany.com.
3:49 That's kcattlecompany.com.
3:51 Use the promo code Kyle to get 15% off of your order.
3:54 Again, that promo code is just my first name, Kyle.
3:56 That's kyle for 15% off of your order at kcattlecompany.com.
4:02 All right, guys, I've kept Kevin Sorbo from you long enough.
4:04 So without further ado, let's get into it.
4:07 Kevin Sorbo, welcome to Undaunted Life of Man's podcast.
4:10 Hey, it's good to be here.
4:11 Good to see you, man.
4:12 I'm so happy to see you.
4:13 You know, we actually met a while ago.
4:15 We talked about it off there,
4:16 but we got to share a table
4:18 at a very awesome folds of honor event up there in Tulsa.
4:20 So we'll make sure that we can make that happen again
4:23 here in the near future.
4:24 Now we don't have all the time in the world today.
4:25 And as I told you all fair,
4:27 everyone asks you all the same questions, right?
4:29 So they want to talk about how you got into acting.
4:31 Was it cold growing up in Minnesota?
4:33 You know, what was it like in your big break in television?
4:35 And, you know, if we have some time, we'll get to all that.
4:38 But we were talking a little bit off air
4:39 that we feel like potentially we're at an inflection point
4:43 in our country.
4:44 So obviously as of the recording of this two days ago,
4:46 the FBI raided Donald Trump's personal residence
4:49 in Mar-a-Lago.
4:50 We saw last Sunday what the US Senate did
4:54 in terms of voting to add all these new IRS agents,
4:57 even though they can't really find time
4:59 to add new agents for the border or anything like that.
5:02 It feels like we're an inflection point for conservatism.
5:04 And so for you, obviously I could start with generically,
5:07 you know, why does conservatism jive with you?
5:10 But let's talk a little bit about kind of where we're at
5:12 in the country.
5:13 And look at you.
5:13 - There's me golf with Trump right there, buddy.
5:15 - Right. So if you're just listening to this,
5:17 he showed me a picture of him at a golf tournament
5:19 with Trump.
5:19 Now, is that after a hole in one or something?
5:21 'Cause you look really happy.
5:23 - You know what, no, he got a hole in one there
5:26 about a couple months after this was taken.
5:28 And then I got one and he sent me the video.
5:31 And I got one three weeks later, my eighth one,
5:33 I sent him the video.
5:34 - Okay, there you go.
5:35 Well, let's get into it.
5:36 - I trumped Trump.
5:37 - Yeah, that's right.
5:38 So let's talk about that.
5:39 Let's talk about what's going on with Trump.
5:41 Let's talk about kind of the targeting of conservatism.
5:43 Go.
5:44 - Oh yeah, they're gonna come up to you.
5:45 They're gonna come up to me.
5:45 I mean, 87,000, we're talking billions of dollars
5:48 of taxpayer money going to bring more of these bows those in.
5:51 The IRS does nothing to make America a better country.
5:55 It does nothing.
5:57 Their job is to be paid by us to come after us.
6:00 And it's just insane.
6:01 I've always wanted to abolish the IRS
6:03 'cause I think it's absolutely insane and ridiculous.
6:05 But the battle is on, it's unbelievable to me of the FBI.
6:10 I mean, everything must be being paid off.
6:13 So much money to do this.
6:15 It's just shocking to me how corrupt the FBI is.
6:17 They were all certainly part of January 6th.
6:19 This is not some weird theory going on out there.
6:24 It's so crazy to think that Hillary Clinton
6:28 burns 33,000 emails when she was ordered
6:31 to turn those emails over.
6:33 And nothing happens to her.
6:34 Nothing happens to her.
6:36 It's this is a first in the country.
6:39 But when even when Trump was president,
6:42 every single day the press went after him.
6:44 No presidents had to put up with that.
6:45 Every single day they went after that guy.
6:48 And I don't know, it's sad to see
6:51 where the country's going right now.
6:52 It's not getting, the only place that's getting better at
6:57 is that COVID woke a lot of people up.
7:00 I saw that the government loves using fear as a weapon
7:03 and fear is an amazing weapon.
7:04 'Cause I fly a lot and I still see, you know,
7:06 90% of the people on planes right now don't wear a mask.
7:10 It shows the majority of people
7:11 are sick of this stupid mask mandate
7:12 'cause masks do squat.
7:14 They do absolutely nothing.
7:15 And, but you still got these people,
7:17 it's easier to pick up the liberals now
7:18 in airplanes, that's for sure.
7:20 But these people are wearing, I was on a plane yesterday,
7:22 a guy had a mask on and a shield.
7:24 And I'm going, you've got to freaking be kidding me.
7:26 I mean, if this, it looks like maybe 25 years old,
7:29 this guy, so I thought, okay,
7:30 maybe he's got preexisting conditions or something.
7:32 But I don't know, we live in strange times right now.
7:36 We got a battle on our hands
7:37 and we got to keep fighting it from all sides.
7:38 And people are starting to wake up, but don't be afraid.
7:40 I figured we can't wake up, you know, the sheep are the sheep.
7:43 I'm here to wake up the lions like you.
7:45 You know, you're already fighting to fight them.
7:47 We need more lions like you.
7:49 LinkedIn is pretty great at a lot of things,
7:51 like helping you tap into the latest trends
7:53 and insights in your field.
7:55 We cannot stop your co-worker from tapping her pencil.
7:58 LinkedIn can help you find new jobs
8:00 that align with your career goals.
8:02 We cannot help you find the source
8:04 of that weird smell in the office fridge.
8:07 Yeah.
8:07 And while we can't stop your co-workers
8:09 from bringing their hobbies into the office,
8:12 LinkedIn can help you bring your career to the next level.
8:16 LinkedIn is the network that works for you.
8:19 Well, I appreciate that.
8:20 The thing that's interesting about it is,
8:22 yet a tweet I believe was from yesterday,
8:23 it says the government is the enemy of the people.
8:26 Now, in 2019, that would have been considered
8:29 to be a fairly extreme statement,
8:30 especially coming from somebody that's all on the right.
8:32 You know, we're in this third straight year
8:34 of tremendous growth in our economy.
8:37 You know, everybody was really happy
8:38 with what was going on in their bank accounts and at work.
8:40 And they could have done without some of the mean tweets,
8:42 but aside from that, if you can get over that,
8:44 your life is pretty good.
8:46 And then 2020 hit and then we've been in this kind of milieu
8:48 of these last couple of years.
8:49 I'm not really even understanding who we are,
8:52 but it does feel that way to a degree
8:54 that the government is the enemy of the people,
8:56 but it's one thing to have an enemy that is docile
8:58 and not attacking you.
8:59 And it's another thing when the enemy is coming after you
9:02 and 87,000 IRS agents, like that's bigger
9:06 than the stadium that the OU Sooners play in here
9:08 in my home state.
9:09 That is more agents than you can fit people
9:12 in an enormous college football stadium.
9:14 So for you and kind of what you've seen
9:16 and kind of growing up in conservatism
9:19 and kind of seeing the different factions of that,
9:21 whether it be Reagan or George W or, you know, Donald Trump,
9:25 how does that feel to you, to look at your government
9:27 and be like, man, I just, I don't know if I can trust
9:29 anything that you're saying to me.
9:31 - Well, you know, I'm not going to say it word for word,
9:33 but one of my favorite quotes from Ronald Reagan was
9:35 the greatest words to fear are high.
9:37 I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
9:39 - Sure.
9:39 - I mean, you have to have that back in the early 80s.
9:43 It has only just gotten worse right now.
9:45 It starts with a public education system as well.
9:47 It's, you know, as early as pre-kindergarten, you know,
9:50 what they've been doing in our schools.
9:51 I never had that when I was going to school.
9:53 When I was going to school, teachers taught
9:55 what they were supposed to teach.
9:56 It was as simple as that.
9:57 They didn't tell me to vote.
9:58 They didn't tell me to believe in God
9:59 or not believe in God.
10:00 There was nothing like that.
10:01 They taught their math and biology and science
10:03 and that's just the way it was.
10:04 Why all these teachers now through this indoctrination
10:07 has been going on certainly over the last 30 years.
10:10 That's all they want to talk about right now.
10:12 And it's just, it's just, it's sad to me,
10:14 but we have it, we do have a fight in our hands.
10:16 I think one of the blessings of COVID,
10:19 not only waking people up overall with the government's team,
10:21 but waking up with the school system's doing.
10:23 And now we have 2 million more kids being homeschooled,
10:25 which is great.
10:26 We're homeschool advocates.
10:27 My wife speaks across the country on it.
10:29 Please go to sorbostudios.com, sorbostudios.com
10:32 and check that out.
10:33 And I fight my way against Hollywood.
10:35 You know, they're putting out movies
10:36 that create divisiveness and anger
10:38 and hate and violence and sex.
10:40 I'm trying to do movies that made me fall in love
10:42 and want to be an actor in the first place.
10:43 Movies that have a good message
10:45 about hope and redemption and love and faith and laughter
10:47 and forgiveness and all those things
10:49 that is certainly missing in today's movies
10:52 and television shows that Hollywood wants to put out there.
10:54 They would never do a Hercules today.
10:56 Right.
10:57 When I shot that series from 1993 to 2000,
11:00 I didn't write their series.
11:02 It was Universal Studios, the people that are hired there.
11:05 And they actually put in moral messages.
11:07 You wouldn't see them today shows.
11:09 They would make Hercules a whole different thing
11:10 that maybe make him a transgender, I don't know,
11:13 but they would change the whole thing with them now.
11:15 And you're like, oh, what is going on with the world?
11:16 They were pushing this kind of stuff.
11:18 I don't get it.
11:19 And I don't harbor the anger and hatred
11:21 that the left has.
11:21 I really don't.
11:22 To me, let's have a conversation.
11:24 But all they got is anger.
11:26 And you can't even have a civil conversation with these people
11:28 'cause all they want to see is who's gonna yell louder
11:30 than the person next to them.
11:31 And it's just, it's immature, it's ignorance, it's uneducated.
11:36 And it's just, it's childish.
11:37 It's like a bunch of seven and eighth graders
11:39 in junior high school mad about something.
11:41 And it's just, you know, how do we get past this?
11:44 We just have to keep fighting.
11:45 Otherwise, we're gonna lose this country.
11:47 - Well, Kevin, let's talk a little bit more about the fighting
11:49 because the thing that would be indicative,
11:51 and I'm painting with a broad brush here
11:52 in terms of conservatives,
11:53 even specifically Christian conservatives,
11:55 and today we're always really, really, really nice.
11:57 You could push them in, push them in, push them in,
11:58 push them in.
11:59 And finally, when their back was against the wall,
12:00 they'd be like, "Hey, now I need you to back up, see."
12:02 Because you're making me uncomfortable, see?
12:03 But now I'm seeing that conservatives
12:05 are going a little bit more on the offense,
12:07 certainly with what was happening
12:08 with Critical Race Theory in the schools,
12:10 with LGBTQ stuff in the schools,
12:11 taking their kids out of the schools,
12:13 even in entertainment.
12:14 You see entertainment like the Top Gun movie
12:16 doing incredibly, incredibly well
12:17 with a very pro-America kind of generically moral message.
12:21 But even like, as a parent now,
12:22 I've got a two-year-old in a five-month-old, Kevin,
12:24 I'm always concerned about what my kids are gonna watch.
12:26 So we love Bluey, the cartoon.
12:28 That's the cartoon dogs from Australia.
12:30 But the third season of it just came out today
12:32 and I'm like, "I really hope there's no rainbow flags.
12:35 "I hope there's no pride parade.
12:36 "I hope there's not a transgender dog
12:37 "that's gonna be in there."
12:38 And I can't just set my kid down
12:40 in front of the television for 30 minutes
12:42 and let them watch something.
12:43 I've got to be so on top of everything.
12:45 Do you feel like it's gonna eventually whip back
12:47 where everything is gonna kind of settle down
12:49 and become a little bit more relaxed?
12:51 Or have we kind of gone past the point in no return?
12:53 - No, I think we certainly reach a tipping point,
12:55 but I think even the CEO of Netflix,
12:58 instead of doing some employees,
12:59 "Hey, look, get past the wokeness.
13:01 "This is insane what we're doing."
13:02 He says, "If you're gonna be playing
13:05 "this woken card all the time,
13:06 "then you're more than welcome to leave the company."
13:08 'Cause he saw what happened.
13:09 There is a backlash right now.
13:10 I'm sure that they've lost 500 million
13:13 to a billion dollars over the last year,
13:15 a year and a half, 'cause a lot of people have left.
13:18 I've heard up to two million subscribers.
13:20 Well, my gosh, that's what, 40 million dollars a month,
13:23 at least.
13:24 So they realize, I honestly don't care
13:29 what people's lifestyles are.
13:30 It's just that you don't have to have
13:31 in every single TV show or every single movie
13:35 that we have to represent less than 3% of the population.
13:38 Transgender world is less than what?
13:40 0.025% it's fine.
13:43 Live your life and do the things you're doing.
13:44 I'm not backlashing against it.
13:46 I'm in Hollywood for a crime not loud, you know?
13:48 For the most part, they pretty much kicked me out,
13:49 but I'm still in the business making movies.
13:52 I've worked with the gay population for 35 years.
13:55 I've never had a problem with him.
13:57 You won't find one that came out and said
13:59 he was horrible to me.
14:00 He's homophobic, hardly homophobic.
14:03 I let people live their lives the way they want.
14:05 What I get tired of is when you keep pushing
14:07 and pushing and pushing and say,
14:09 you gotta do this kind of do that.
14:10 I said, you know what, I don't have to do anything.
14:12 Just, well, you live for your life, I'll live mine.
14:14 I'm not here to bash you, I'm not here to change you,
14:17 but I'm just tired of what they're doing
14:19 in terms of every single movie.
14:21 Every single television show is like,
14:23 guys, come on, it doesn't have to be the message
14:26 in everything that's out there.
14:28 You want equal representation?
14:30 Then if you only represent 3% of the population,
14:33 maybe you should only be in 3% of the television shows
14:34 and movies, not 95% of it.
14:37 Struggling with weight loss?

15:05 - Right, whenever I talk to people,
15:08 I'm like, I talk to these people that are,
15:09 they're steaming mad about all this stuff
15:11 that their kids are watching and blah, blah and all these things,
15:13 but they're still subscribing to Netflix
15:15 where the movie cuties is still on there,
15:17 where it has little girls stripping
15:18 through the sexual predation pleasure of grown men.
15:22 They still have Disney Plus,
15:24 they still have all these things and it's like, guys,
15:26 do you realize that you're aiding this?
15:28 Like you're literally giving money to your enemy
15:31 and even in the best way that I could possibly describe it
15:33 is you're handing money to people that hate you.
15:35 And I don't know about you, if people hate me, that's fine.
15:38 But I'm probably not gonna fund their hate.
15:40 That's not really something that I'm going to do.
15:42 But let's talk a little bit about what you brought up
15:44 in terms of being a conservative,
15:45 being a Republican, being a Christian in Hollywood.
15:48 Now, you've been doing your own thing for a while
15:50 and obviously you've had a long career in Hollywood,
15:52 but talk to me a little bit about that
15:53 because you've even just mentioned,
15:54 they've kind of pushed you out as much as they can,
15:56 pushing you out without being undeniable, but go for it.
15:59 - Yeah, they booted me up.
16:00 My agent manager said we can't work it anymore
16:03 because you're a conservative and a Christian.
16:05 It's probably worse being a Christian in Hollywood
16:06 for some reason.
16:07 I don't get it, it's like being a double leper
16:08 having both those Cs attached to your name.
16:12 I love the business, I love the industry.
16:13 Hollywood owes me nothing, you know.
16:14 I had a great career of Hercules seven years,
16:16 five years in Andromeda, did a bunch of movies up until 2012.
16:20 I actually done more since then when I went on my own
16:22 and I just got into the independent world,
16:24 fortunate to keep raising enough money to make a movie
16:28 or get called in to do a movie.
16:30 They're all low budget movies,
16:31 but they're good movies with a good message.
16:33 Not every movie I've done I'm proud of,
16:34 not every movie I've done, I've done over 70 movies.
16:36 There's a dozen that absolutely suck
16:38 and I'm embarrassed that I've been down,
16:40 but for the most part, movies I've done
16:43 have been good family movies
16:44 and I'm gonna keep doing those things.
16:46 Like I said, to get booted out, it was sad to me.
16:52 To sit there, like I said earlier,
16:53 I don't harbor that anger and hate that Hollywood does
16:56 or that the left has towards people like me and you.
16:59 I don't understand why it gets this bigger
17:01 and bigger great divide that's going on,
17:03 but that's perpetuated by Hollywood.
17:05 I mean, late grade Andrew Bright part said,
17:08 politics comes down from culture
17:10 Andrew was the dear friend of my wife and I.
17:12 I think that's kind of fishy about his death as well,
17:14 that's another thing.
17:15 I think that's one of the things I posted on Twitter
17:17 I said, does anybody have any more conspiracy theories
17:19 'cause mine keep coming true.
17:21 Which they did, but Facebook took me down
17:25 about a year and a half for posting the truth.
17:27 Zuckerberg, the wussy that he is, doesn't like the truth,
17:30 he hates the truth, they wanna redefine what truth is
17:34 and it's unfortunate, I was posting nothing but facts
17:37 and they said, this is misinformation.
17:39 I go, no, this is 10,000 doctors saying masks
17:42 are useless for instance, I'm not saying it,
17:45 I'm saying, what do you think?
17:47 But I'm on the side of the doctor
17:48 because masks are useless, it's not gonna stop anything.
17:51 Look at Biden, he said what, he said all 47 jabs
17:54 and wears double masks and he said COVID four times.
17:57 COVID's here to stay but I think to segue again,
18:00 I think Fauci and Gates should be in prison
18:01 for what they've done, this stuff was all planned.
18:03 It was all done on purpose and it's incredibly sad
18:06 what these people have done.
18:08 But we do have a battle on our hands
18:10 and I'm gonna keep fighting with good movies
18:12 and the biggest thing is trying to raise money for them,
18:14 I do movies in the three to four million range.
18:16 So they pull in teeth to do the movies that I do.
18:19 That's three, four million dollars,
18:20 that's catering budget in Pirates of the Caribbean
18:22 and the Avengers, those are the three hundred million dollar
18:24 movies and then they have a hundred million dollars
18:26 to promote it, we gotta rely on word of mouth.
18:28 But I'm lucky enough to keep going,
18:30 I actually shot two movies in your home state.
18:32 One is called Girl of Leaves and Miracles
18:34 with Maris Corvino and Peter Coyote,
18:36 wonderful family movie.
18:37 I just finished the Reagan movie of Dennis Quaid,
18:39 there was shot in Guthrie, Oklahoma, right?
18:41 No, that one's coming out probably in February, March
18:43 and next year I've played his past tournament movie.
18:46 So we're staying busy,
18:47 I got a Western we're hoping to shoot in your state as well.
18:50 So maybe we'll give you to come on the set.
18:51 But-
18:52 - Hey, if you need a red bearded extra, I know a guy.
18:55 - I think we can work it out, I think we can work it out.
18:57 - Okay, that sounds good to me.
18:59 - We'll make you a bad guy,
19:00 we'll kill you off early in the movie.
19:01 - Hey, that's fine, I'm totally cool.
19:03 I make a better bad guy than a good guy.
19:04 But yeah, you were filming that about 20 minutes away
19:06 from my house, the one that you did with Dennis Quaid.
19:09 Now, you said a cuss word
19:10 and I don't know if you knew that, Kevin.
19:13 You said the word truth about two minutes ago.
19:16 Now, we seem to be in a post-truth culture now.
19:19 You can extrapolate that-
19:19 - A five letter cuss word.
19:20 - Right, exactly, it's a big time cuss word.
19:23 But it's like, if you look at it in certain ways, again,
19:26 most people don't know what post-modernism is,
19:28 but that's where we basically get this cultural relativism.
19:30 Where your truth is your truth, my truth is my truth.
19:33 Your morality is your morality, mine is mine.
19:35 There's not a cosmic morality or any way to differentiate
19:39 between good and evil or any of those types of things.
19:42 How does that feel for someone like you
19:44 that is a family man, a businessman trying to create art
19:47 and we'll get more into kind of Christian
19:48 and moral art and those types of things,
19:50 when true statements are seen as anathema
19:53 or something that you can't possibly utter in polite company?
19:56 - Well, the truth hurts, right?
19:57 People hate hearing the truth, they'd rather be lied to.
20:00 I'm not a perfect person.
20:01 I've done a lot of bad things in my life
20:03 and I'll be regret.
20:04 And I'll probably continue to do stupid things
20:06 that I'm gonna regret.
20:07 But I'm not out here to preach to people.
20:10 I'm not here to just try to do movies
20:11 that have a more positive thing,
20:12 but it's so weird.
20:13 We're trying to redefine everything right now
20:15 or change the names.
20:16 I look at these people and look and say,
20:17 well, let's tear down these statues.
20:19 Let's get rid of them out rushing.
20:21 Let's do, I mean, it's absolutely crazy to me
20:24 that people think America's the only country
20:27 that has that bad history.
20:28 Every country is good and bad history.
20:30 And the whole idea about remembering history
20:33 is so it doesn't repeat itself.
20:34 And now we're gonna repeat it
20:35 because people wanna get rid of it.
20:36 They're not teaching in properly in schools anymore.
20:38 They don't even teach kids
20:39 about the American Revolution or the Civil War.
20:41 They're just getting rid of it.
20:43 And this is reality.
20:46 We got people out there thinking that the Holocaust was fake.
20:48 Even though you've got video footage,
20:51 you've got all this, you know, the knowledge there
20:53 that's right there in front of you.
20:54 But this whole thing about your truth
20:57 is your truth, my truth, the truth is the truth.
20:59 Right is right, left is left.
21:00 Two plus two is four.
21:02 Quick change in the definition of all these words right now.
21:04 There are things that are normal
21:06 and things that are abnormal.
21:07 That's why it's not normal to run
21:10 around killing people all the time.
21:11 That's not a good thing to do, okay?
21:13 But we're sitting there making it look like now.
21:15 We don't even put these guys in prison.
21:17 There was a guy in New York City
21:19 who's been arrested over a hundred times
21:20 and they keep releasing.
21:21 He keeps committing crimes.
21:23 What do we have to do?
21:25 I mean, these mayors of these liberal cities,
21:27 I look at that crazy mayor in Chicago,
21:29 how does she stay in power?
21:31 A city that has as strict as gun laws,
21:33 as strict as gun laws in America
21:35 has the most shootings for over 4,000 shootings a year
21:39 over the last five years.
21:40 And I know this thing 'cause I've got a documentary
21:43 that's called Bleeding Blue.
21:44 Now, in the last, I saw a statistic,
21:47 it was 4,100 shootings in 2018, 41, just in Chicago.
21:52 That's why it does in the day.
21:53 Every single day that many say,
21:55 how many involved the police?
21:57 Very few.
21:58 0.2%.
22:00 Yeah.
22:01 So 99.8% are mostly black on black killings.
22:06 But it's mostly civilian on civilian.
22:08 Over 99%.
22:09 What gets the news?
22:11 That one less than 1% that the cops are involved with.
22:14 It's unbelievable.
22:15 And this is how they twist and turn things.
22:17 They were interviewing some women,
22:19 young women in Minneapolis rhyme from during the rise,
22:22 because that's my home state's turning
22:23 into California of this politics.
22:25 And they asked them,
22:26 how many black people do you think are killed by cops a day?
22:29 A day.
22:30 And they said thousands.
22:32 Yeah.
22:32 Thousands.
22:34 Don't you think that'd be on the news?
22:35 Are these people,
22:36 are they just that angry about that, you know,
22:39 in that same year,
22:40 I just mentioned how many black people are killed by cops?
22:44 10 in the entire country, 10 in 2018.
22:46 How many cops were killed?
22:47 80.
22:48 80.
22:50 Where's the uproar with that?
22:52 It's just, you know, they know what buttons
22:54 to push with people.
22:55 I think there's just a lot of uneducated people out there.
22:58 They're ignorant people that don't want to look at the reality
23:01 and don't want to look to the truth.
23:02 And they are back to truth again.
23:04 Well, Kevin, it's it's bite sized narratives versus truth.
23:08 The truth is too hard to absorb,
23:10 but it's we kind of have an easy proof here.
23:12 You can know something's not an epidemic, right?
23:14 So there's not an epidemic of police officers shooting
23:17 and killing unarmed black civilians that are sitting there,
23:20 just reading their Bible or eating a sandwich on a park bench.
23:22 And the reason is,
23:23 is because every time one of these instances comes up,
23:25 you know the person's name.
23:26 Like, because if something's a real epidemic,
23:28 most people can't name a hundred people
23:30 that died in the Holocaust,
23:31 because there were six million people that's too much information
23:35 for our brains to take in.
23:36 It's so much easier to play into a narrative
23:38 as opposed to truth.
23:39 And that's why I tell guys all the time again,
23:40 on Donald's life,
23:41 we're here to equipment to push back darkness.
23:43 How do you push back darkness with truth?
23:45 But you also have to have four to two.
23:46 You also have to have resilience.
23:47 And you also have to have the willingness to do that.
23:50 And so part of what you've mentioned several times here, Kevin,
23:52 is the way that you're pushing back
23:54 is by making these wholesome movies.
23:56 And that's that shouldn't be a bad word
23:57 when you're describing movies in terms of wholesome.
23:59 But again, you know this to be the case.
24:01 And it's been talked about ad nauseum at this point.
24:03 Christian filmmaking kind of has a negative rap
24:06 because a lot of the Christian films
24:08 that were made in the 90s and 2000s
24:09 were hot steaming piles of garbage.
24:12 And so you have these people that are like,
24:13 I'm not going to watch that Christian film.
24:15 It's going to be corny, it's going to be that.
24:17 Now they miss out on that,
24:18 but then they run to the entertainment that has the budget,
24:21 that has the A-list actors,
24:23 but also has the sex,
24:24 has the gratuitous murders,
24:25 has all the negative things and woke stuff inside of it.
24:28 So talk to me a little bit about that,
24:29 about the perception of Christian filmmaking
24:32 and the work that you do.
24:33 - Well, I think that Christian filmmaking
24:35 has improved greatly over the last 12, 14 years.
24:37 There's no questions, better stories.
24:39 Because equipment now,
24:41 from sound to cameras, whatever,
24:44 is so much cheaper and so much better
24:47 than it was 30 years ago,
24:49 that these movies, I look at my movie "Guys Not Dead",
24:51 a little $2 million budget made $140 million worldwide.
24:55 "Let the Be Light" movie I directed did very well.
24:58 A soul surf movie I did with Dennis Quaid,
25:00 did very, very well in the life of Bethany Hamilton.
25:02 So more and more of these movies that are coming out,
25:05 I can only imagine, Cindy Bond's company,
25:07 that's great work, "The Kendrick Brothers",
25:10 do wonderful movies as well.
25:11 Rich Puluso and Sony Affirm do want,
25:13 I mean, there's a lot of people out there
25:15 doing quality work right now.
25:17 And I think the biggest thing is,
25:20 since there's a smaller pocket of us,
25:22 we need to get together and support each other films.
25:25 I mean, we all have different audiences that follow us
25:26 and similar audience that follow us.
25:28 I say different, just maybe I have fans
25:30 because of Hercules that wanna watch my movies,
25:32 but maybe I haven't watched an Erwin Brothers film, you know?
25:36 And we need to band together
25:38 so we can harvest as many people as we can
25:40 to watch our movies and spread the word better.
25:42 And I'm hoping one day that will happen.
25:44 But it's sad what people that they don't wanna take a chance.
25:49 Here's the thing, and I get this from, you know,
25:53 ages and agnostics, I've talked to them all
25:55 and I've got friends in that in those categories as well.
25:57 We're still friends.
25:58 We don't hate each other for different points of view.
26:00 And they say, well, the trouble with the perception
26:03 of Christians that they all think
26:04 there's so much better than everybody else.
26:06 And I'm not gonna disagree with that.
26:07 But it only takes a handful of people to do that.
26:09 I think most Christians, I don't know, are really good people.
26:12 And they don't have a better than now attitude.
26:13 But the ones that have a lot of power
26:15 can have that perception.
26:18 And that's the problem.
26:19 We need to fight back on that
26:21 because Christians, you know,
26:24 we need to be the most forgiving out there
26:25 and sometimes they can be the least forgiving.
26:27 And we need to work on that.
26:28 And I know that.
26:29 I don't need to because I know I'm gonna screw up,
26:31 just as bad as anybody else out there.
26:34 But at least I'm aware of it.
26:35 I'm trying to get people to get involved in these movies.
26:37 I don't wanna always have a Christian message.
26:40 I wanna have movies just have good values in there.
26:41 You know, I wanna do movies like "Blindside."
26:44 You know, what a great movie.
26:45 That people that maybe didn't have a faith
26:47 of any kind of message was still in the movie.
26:50 But they looked at it as a really good sports movie,
26:52 but the message was still in there.
26:53 It's still snuck up on them in a positive way,
26:55 not a negative way.
26:56 So I wanna keep doing more and more movies like that.
26:59 And I have those.
27:00 I have them ready to go.
27:00 We've got three movies done in the can.
27:02 I've got two documentaries that are wonderful documentaries,
27:04 very educational.
27:06 And they'll all be out over the next six to eight months.
27:09 - Well, I'm in in terms of your idea about,
27:11 hey, us kind of pulling our resources together
27:13 to make sure people are aware of this
27:14 that people can watch the films.
27:16 But also, I think one thing that you talked about
27:18 in terms of Christians, you know,
27:19 having issues and people having issues with Christians
27:21 is people don't like Christians to a degree
27:23 because they have standards
27:25 and they don't wanna live by standards.
27:26 But it's when Christians make an idol of those standards
27:29 and they make an idol of their ability
27:32 to check all the boxes and follow all the rules.
27:35 That's whenever it gets very problematic for a lot of folks.
27:37 But I do wanna kind of go back in reverse
27:39 and talk a little bit about early in your acting career
27:41 because I think there was a lesson
27:43 that would be good for our audience
27:44 to know really for anybody to know,
27:46 is that from my understanding anyway,
27:48 you can correct the record if I've got it wrong,
27:50 you had some near misses early in your career
27:53 that I'm sure were wildly disappointing.
27:55 So as I understand it, you lost out to Dean Kane
27:57 for the role of Superman and, you know,
27:59 Lois and Clark, the new Adventures of Superman,
28:01 which made Dean Kane an international superstar.
28:04 But you also lost out, and I didn't know this too,
28:06 David deCovany for the role of Fox Mulder and X-Files
28:09 as far as I understand it.
28:10 But you did eventually get your big break
28:12 as Hercules in the television show.
28:13 And, you know, you did a little Hercules type step before that.
28:16 But talk to me a little bit about that.
28:17 You know, one, make sure I've gotten all my facts straight.
28:20 But also, there's a big time lesson in there
28:22 that you could have just hit the reset button
28:24 on your entire life the first time you got the call
28:26 that said, hey, you didn't get the gig,
28:28 but you stuck with it, and here you are
28:29 with this incredibly long and illustrious career
28:32 in Hollywood.
28:33 - Well, I am a 13 year overnight success.
28:36 - Okay, see, there you go.
28:38 - There's a lot of work in it.
28:40 I mean, it's a very competitive business, obviously,
28:42 even on both sides of the camera.
28:43 I mean, it's, I love it if I hear somebody say,
28:46 "Well, I didn't really want to be an actor."
28:48 I sort of fell into it.
28:48 That's BS.
28:51 - This career, making movies and TV,
28:54 no matter what side of the camera on,
28:56 you want to be in that business, more than any other one.
28:58 I understand all the businesses for other people.
29:00 I didn't want to do that,
29:01 but I had to find a way to make money.
29:03 No, these are careers that people want they go after.
29:07 And it is highly competitive.
29:08 I mean, I moved out of LA.
29:10 I didn't know anybody.
29:11 You know, I went out there a little time,
29:12 I grew up in the little town of Minnesota,
29:13 about 7,000 people, west of Minneapolis,
29:16 and I loaded up my beautiful car and just moved out there.
29:19 And I just said, all right, let's give this a shot, you know.
29:21 And I've done a lot of commercials already.
29:23 Minneapolis, St. Paul was,
29:25 people don't realize they're headquarters
29:27 for a lot of big companies like Best Buy, Target, 3M,
29:30 Honeywell, Pillsbury, General Mills.
29:31 So I did a lot of commercials.
29:33 So I had that all-important screen actors' guilt card,
29:35 that side card that you might have.
29:36 - That's right.
29:37 - You'd be a champ to have an audition.
29:39 So that wasn't a problem for me to get a commercial agent.
29:42 But I will tell you, I was one of the fortunate ones.
29:43 I never had to work on a job in Hollywood.
29:46 I never read a bar of ten or weight tables
29:47 and be a bouncer to any of that stuff.
29:49 I worked very well commercially.
29:51 So I was very fortunate to just keep working
29:54 and keep getting a paycheck
29:55 and keep being able to pay my rent and my car loan and all that stuff
30:00 and take the classes I wanted to take and acting
30:02 and also, you know, get on auditions when I had auditions.
30:06 So I was very lucky that way.
30:07 And I was very lucky to meet a guy
30:09 that owns three apartment buildings.
30:10 So I got a rent control apartment
30:11 right in the Santa Monica Venice border.
30:13 Gold's gym is blocks away.
30:14 It was my second home.
30:16 The beach was right there.
30:17 I mean, as a guy in his 20s, this was awesome for me.
30:20 But yeah, I mean, I did come close.
30:22 Under the company thing, I got times like last five, six guys.
30:25 But on the other one, I did a screen test with Terry Hacks
30:28 for for Lois and Clark Dean Kane,
30:30 was the other thing that's been a friend for years.
30:31 I've been on Dean for over 30 years.
30:33 Great guy.
30:34 In fact, he and I just shot him to be together recently.
30:36 - There you go, see.
30:37 - And we bought, you know, a lot of times
30:39 with these autograph shows, these comic-ons,
30:40 we signed next to each other and go out and have dinner
30:43 and he's just a class act.
30:45 And so I initially got the role.
30:49 And when I did the last meeting with the,
30:51 with all powers that be there at Warner Brothers lot.
30:54 And then the next day, they changed their mind.
30:55 Well, Dean, so you go from the highs to highs,
30:57 the lowest lows in less than 24 hours.
31:00 It's a brutal business.
31:01 Three months later, I got hurt quickly.
31:03 So I was joked to Dean, I go, I go, well, let's see.
31:06 My show in seven years became the most watched TV show
31:09 in the world with Hercules.
31:10 And you're sure I got canceled after three seasons?
31:12 I'm okay, what happened?
31:15 But, you know, Dean works all the time.
31:17 I mean, the guy works constantly.
31:18 And I have a movie right now.
31:20 I'm trying to raise money for that.
31:21 I'm gonna direct with Dean and I in it.
31:23 That's a wonderful, wonderful independent movie.
31:26 So we'll see if we can raise the money to get that.
31:28 But yeah, I put my time in the bust of my butt, you know?
31:31 As a friend said to me, good dear friend of mine
31:33 from Minnesota, I've known for every service.
31:35 You go, "Serves, remember, it's called show business,
31:37 not show show."
31:38 And I always remember that.
31:39 You know, I was a double major marketing,
31:41 advertising in college and business major.
31:43 And I marketed and advertised myself.
31:46 I was my own product and you aren't.
31:48 That's what you are in Hollywood.
31:49 So I had a lot of nose, a lot of doors slammed my face.
31:53 Everything in Hollywood is about, you're too young,
31:55 you're too old, you're too tall, too short.
31:56 It's always something, it's almost rejection.
31:59 And, you know, you've got to just tough it out.
32:01 And I just, I bug my agents all the time
32:04 'cause I would apply for the breakdown service
32:08 and get me faxes back and that they sent to me.
32:10 "Hey, I'm ready for this roll, get me in there."
32:12 I remember my agent said to him one time,
32:14 he goes, "Kevin, I've got a hundred other clients."
32:15 I said, "I'll give a crap about your other clients."
32:17 You think they care about me?
32:19 And give me a chance to be rejected.
32:21 That was my mantra.
32:22 At least let me get in the door.
32:24 And I logged a lot of miles
32:26 and this crappy six-lane freeways of LA
32:30 on the 405 and 101, you know,
32:32 spending an hour and a half going 16 miles.
32:34 Stuck and stuff.
32:36 But I loved it.
32:38 I would never go back there to live.
32:40 I left four years ago.
32:41 I live in the beautiful city of Florida.
32:42 We left one of the worst governors in the country
32:44 with Newsome, the Santos,
32:46 who's the biggest rock star in our country right now.
32:49 And this state's been great for me.
32:51 I love being here.
32:53 - Well, I'm glad to hear that.
32:54 And I love hearing that story about,
32:55 "Hey, just give me in the door
32:56 'cause a lot of people just want things to happen again.
32:58 I'm a millennial."
32:59 Well, go ahead.
33:00 - I gotta say real quick,
33:01 this is the biggest thing I try to tell people.
33:03 I do a lot of speaking events.
33:04 And I say even with the troubling thing
33:06 with so many people, they're afraid of failure
33:09 and maybe they're afraid of success at the same time.
33:12 But they fail once and that's it for them.
33:14 They just give up and they give up on life.
33:17 And then I think they become bitter
33:19 and they become angry as the years roll along
33:21 'cause I saw it happen in the Hollywood.
33:22 I saw guys when I was in my 20s
33:24 and then I got Hercules in my early 30s.
33:26 But I saw guys just go off the deep end.
33:29 One of the drugs, one of those alcohol
33:31 or just a mood change in that.
33:34 I had a buddy commit suicide
33:35 because it didn't turn out for his career.
33:37 They wanted to turn out.
33:38 It's a very evil town, it really is.
33:40 But at the same time, I love the creative business.
33:43 I do, I love it.
33:44 People say, "Oh, why do you end there?
33:45 "If it's such so many jerks in there?"
33:47 I love being on the set.
33:48 I love the process of working with people,
33:50 creating something of nothing.
33:51 Working with talented writers, camera people,
33:54 hair and makeup people, whatever it may be,
33:55 visual effects guys.
33:57 So I still have a love for him.
33:58 I'm still a kid when I'm on the set and I still enjoy it.
34:01 I'm grateful that Hercules by season three,
34:03 they started letting me direct in some of them
34:04 'cause that led on me now,
34:05 directing what I'm doing on these movies.
34:07 So it's been a God sending a lot of ways for me
34:12 because I love doing it.
34:14 But boy, it's tough and it beats you up
34:16 and you gotta be able to stick it out
34:18 because too many people give up,
34:19 not only in my business, it's just in life.
34:21 And they wanna blame God or blame a God
34:23 they don't believe in or blame a family, friends, the world.
34:26 And I tell people, cue the Michael Jackson song,
34:28 it's the man in the mirror, look in the mirror,
34:30 that's what the problem is.
34:31 And we need people to really gut it out
34:34 and stop blaming the rest of the world
34:36 or the problems that they have created on their own
34:38 and say, you know what, I gotta get going
34:40 and I gotta do something about this life
34:42 'cause too many people just give up
34:44 and they become miserable SOBs
34:46 that you're seeing played out right now
34:48 in the Antifa world.
34:49 Again, if I did a documentary on Antifa,
34:52 individual interviews with all of them,
34:54 if they would let me without trying to kill me,
34:56 I don't hate them,
34:57 but yet they're gonna hate you and me just, you know,
35:00 Antifa stands for what, anti-fascist, they are fascists.
35:03 They mustn't know that, if they don't know that,
35:05 then they need to be educated for it.
35:07 But I would love the interview, seriously,
35:08 and I don't mean that in a negative way.
35:10 I'd love to say, okay, I bet there's a common thread here,
35:12 it's a common denominator of what's going on
35:14 in each of their lives, I know there is.
35:16 And that becomes, it's like a gang, right?
35:18 That's what people join gangs,
35:20 to make up for the loss of fathers
35:21 'cause 80% of black kids in this country
35:24 have raised a lot of father.
35:26 So you gotta see the link there,
35:27 it's proven that in that link,
35:29 there's more violence, there's gang members,
35:31 there's drugs, there's alcohol, there's abuse,
35:35 there's prison, I mean, it's right there,
35:36 I don't make this stuff up, it's reality.
35:38 But once again, don't send the truth.
35:40 Oh, that's truth, don't talk about it.
35:43 - Yeah, it's-
35:43 - We need to talk about it.
35:45 - Well, and also something that you're talking about,
35:47 there's just talking about the resistance that you meet
35:49 in Hollywood, a lot of it has to do
35:50 with discipline over motivation.
35:52 You know, I wasn't motivated to get into my home gym
35:54 this morning and put a bunch of weight on the bar
35:55 and squat down to the floor and then get back up,
35:57 but it's what discipline required of me.
35:59 So I had pre-decided that I am a guy that lifts weight,
36:02 so there's someone I'm gonna do.
36:03 It might be, I'm a guy that reads the Bible
36:05 or I'm a guy that goes for a run,
36:06 I'm a guy that does a hard thing.
36:07 Now, we could talk about a million more things,
36:09 but we will the next time you come on the show,
36:11 but I know you got some stuff going on today.
36:12 So this is the last question I got for you for the day.
36:14 So you've done a lot of things on film
36:16 for the last, you know, multiple decades.
36:19 But if you could only leave one thing to the world,
36:22 one of your works as an actor, so that could be a film,
36:25 it could be an entire television series,
36:27 but one thing in your entire career
36:30 and the rest of your career is wiped out,
36:31 what are you leaving for humanity?
36:33 - I did a movie called "What If?"
36:36 I've done over, I've set 73 movies,
36:39 "What If" is certainly in my top three,
36:41 "What If" is written by the same guys that God's not dead.
36:43 In my book, it's a much better book,
36:45 same, a much better movie, same guys wrote "God's not dead,"
36:49 so I'm taking nothing weight from them there,
36:50 but the writers even said they agree with me
36:52 'cause they've heard me say this before
36:53 that I think "What If" is a better movie.
36:55 It was directed by Dallas Jenkins,
36:56 who's now doing "Chosen," which is highly successful.
36:59 - Right.
37:00 - Dallas is the son of Jerry Jenkins,
37:01 Jerry Jenkins wrote the left behind books.
37:05 I just finished directing the next left behind movie,
37:07 "Rise of the Antichrist,"
37:08 that'll probably be out around Christmas for January.
37:11 "What If" is an amazing movie
37:13 because all of us have that "What If" moment in our life,
37:16 and it might be more than one string of stages of your life,
37:19 but you also go, "What If I Did This?"
37:20 "What If I Had Done That?"
37:21 Instead of, you know, it's like,
37:23 there's a song by what's their name,
37:26 from WOW, who passed away, you know what I'm talking about?
37:30 So it's my name, George Michael.
37:31 - There you go.
37:32 - There's a song called "A Different Corner,"
37:35 or something, and it's an opportunity cost.
37:37 I taught in an economic stage that teaches
37:40 that you might go right,
37:41 and maybe you should have gone left that day.
37:43 'Cause, you know, you've left so many different opportunities
37:46 in your life, and we do this every single day.
37:48 When we're driving a car,
37:49 when maybe if we've gone left there with a car accident,
37:51 maybe we went straight and there wasn't one.
37:54 Maybe we went right, and something amazing happened.
37:56 There's so many things that are,
37:58 there's so many more opportunities costs out there
38:00 for each action that we do.
38:02 I mean, I could be working out right now,
38:04 so I'm talking to you,
38:05 but I worked out already this morning myself.
38:06 I'm an old dude, I'm still working out every day.
38:08 So, but as you know, somebody wants to work out.
38:13 A lot of people, they give up too quick on that.
38:15 You can pass that second or third week of working out,
38:17 trust me, it will become a positive drug for you.
38:20 And as you know, we have a huge obesity problem on this.
38:22 I love, I saw Bill Marpo something recently,
38:25 which I was really impressed with.
38:26 And I mean, I've done his show many times
38:28 back in the past is politically incorrect.
38:31 And I love seeing this guy who's a liberal,
38:33 who's left wing coming out more and more now.
38:35 So I don't think somebody, at least someone down the middle,
38:38 but he's posting live truth now.
38:39 And he's [inaudible] off people on the left.
38:41 I'm going, guys, once again, he's just telling the truth.
38:44 What is wrong with the truth?
38:45 But I mean, I'm hoping if anything's left behind
38:47 of all my work, I hope people see what if.
38:50 It's amazing, amazing movie.
38:52 And it's got such a wonderful message in there.
