Shop.undaunted.life. This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast. I'm your host, Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it. >> All right, welcome to Saturated Night Three, Kyle Thompson. Pastor Jubby Martin. Now, is it redundant to say JPluda? >> Probably. >> Okay. Couple of tall Jonathan's here hanging out. >> Uh, thank you, brother. Yeah, the height on that end of the table is very lopsided. Us normal humans over here. We're going to talk about the Nephilim. Is that what we're talking about tonight? Is that why we're You two are here. >> Not tonight. >> Okay. >> What do you think of that custom? >> And I just want to say thank you for that. And uh I don't know what shipping on that is, but >> it's yours. It'll never be needed again. >> Some freight freight down to drive it to you in their truck. I bet >> they custom made a uh a podium. I was like, "Wow, that's the only right size podium I've ever had in my entire life." >> Well, church leader summit, they Matt Chandler goes out there with like one of those like band camp little stands and I'm like, Matt, you have to get down on one knee like to like adjust your pages. It's like, what are you doing? >> It's his thing. >> Yeah. >> Well, uh, this is your first time here. >> It is. And, uh, you it all makes sense. That's what I would just say. It's like I I was in I walked in that room, man. I like I fell apart first of all before I went up there. So I don't know. I mean I just I was like the presence of the Holy Spirit in the worship singing before I went and I I I thought I mean legitimately was like okay Lord I don't know what to do. What do you want me to do? Cuz I I was ugly snot crying and I couldn't couldn't get it together. So uh it all makes sense. That that's that's the word I would say there is I mean the renowned you know throughout the country of this place and what God is doing through these people and this leadership and I walked in tonight I just thought oh I was sitting there I was singing I was like I looked around I said oh it all makes sense. So thank you guys. >> Thank you for encouraging our folks. >> Well it's easy to tell the truth. >> Some of our they don't know man. They just get safe been at. They're like what we do every every September on a Friday night. >> Yeah. It's just like when your kids are experiencing something really incredible, you just want to look at them and say, "Hey, this ain't normal. Just know that this ain't normal." >> And that's what I thought for your people tonight. I was like, "Gosh, I hope they know this isn't normal." >> And uh, praise God. >> I'm going to ask what might sound like a dumb question. >> Ask anything. >> Okay. Uh, >> 67. >> Can you say more about what does it mean to be allin? >> I think I know what you mean for the unbeliever. Hey, get in the game. >> Yeah. for the belie. So maybe both of you want the believer and the unbeliever. What does that mean? Be to be allin. >> Yeah. I think the greatest evil in in the world is the the dead church, the the churchianity, the the churchgoer. I think the I think maybe CS Lewis said this, the the hooker on the corner is closer to the kingdom of God than the man in the second row of the pew >> uh who's been in church his whole entire life. And he's trying to appease God through his good actions. And so in in a verse, you know, or two, Romans 12:1 and2, in view of God's mercy, present your body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship, not conforming any longer to the patterns of this world, but being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you'll be able to test and prove what God's will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will. We just take that first part, no longer uh following or conforming to the patterns of this world. I think there's a lot of Christians and I've I've slip into this trap. I understand the temptation all too well that want to be conformed to the patterns of this world and um and and he's saying, "Hey, I want I want you to present your body as a living sacrifice, as it's been well said, the problem with living sacrifices is they crawl off the altar." And so to go all in with Jesus is just to say, I mean, it's just like what someone happens when they enlist in the service. Mhm. >> I mean, my buddy, he he went to Buds and became a SEAL. And in a in a moment, you know, I mean, he gets through Buds. They they determine where he lives. They determine what he wears. How he talks. He's using a jargon that he didn't even have before. How he talks changes. The mission in front of him changes. The people he's doing life with changes. >> And and in some ways, it's a more beautiful picture of what it means to go allin with Jesus than today church membership. Like at church we're like, "Oh, will you please come and hold a, you know, stand at the door for 30 minutes before the service? Like, will you please will you please, you know, will you come?" And and Jesus is like, "Come and die." He had these huge asks of people like we talked about tonight. Sell everything you have. Give it to the poor and follow me. One guy's like, "Hey, my dad just died." He's like, "This is Jesus." He's like, "Compassionate. Hold the lamb. Throw up the deuce. Sign Jesus." He's like, "Hey, let the dead bury the dead." Yeah, >> you know, foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head. Follow me. That's a big ask. >> Like, can I not go to my father's funeral first? He's like, "No, man. I didn't like I'm I'm saying follow me right now." >> Delayed obedience is disobedience. I think those there in the scripture, we see what it means to go all in. >> Pastor Joby, how would you describe that that thing that happens that the in versus out for somebody post believing in Jesus? I love the way you said it, JP. Some of you got one foot in the world and one foot in the word. >> Yeah. >> And it's the most miserable human on the planet. You can't even actually enjoy >> the the fleeting glimpses of the world because you always feel conviction. >> Yeah. >> And then you can't fully enjoy the presence of Jesus cuz all you have is conviction. >> Yeah. >> It's just a miserable way to live, man. >> And you have an illustration of the >> Yeah. Because we live on the water here, right, in Jacksonville, man. So everybody knows this. You ever you ever you're docking a boat and you try to get out too slow? >> You can't stay there long. >> Yeah. >> It's going to split you in half or you going to fall in. >> Yeah. >> And I I tell our people all the time, man, you you just got to like get >> I I think it's I think it's a like 168 times in the New Testament. Only three times are we called Christians. And I think it's 168 we're called in Christ. >> So what JP's talking about is this is what it means to be in Christ. >> Yeah. Not just I'm going to believe him so that I get to go to heaven one day. >> Yeah. >> You just can't find that in the New Testament. You cannot >> separate Lord and Savior. And Lord just means I'm turning over the reigns. >> Yeah. >> I do what you say. >> Yeah. >> I I'm not the boss of me anymore. >> And And I love the way you said it, man. >> That illustration you gave about about the photo safari thing for free and the other guy invited you. Yeah. And you're like, "Why didn't y'all?" And you were the only guy that went. >> Yeah. >> They just didn't know what they were missing out on, man. They didn't know. >> I 100%. I I thought you're going the other way with it. Like, oh, we slept. It was No, we didn't even have a tent. Like, that's where I thought you were going. >> Yeah. >> A lion ate, my friend. >> Right. >> Well, that's kind of what we think, man. We like the like the whatifs get us. >> Yeah. >> So, >> yeah. >> Why not lean into the like why not? Kyle, do you think that, you know, rewind the tape a few years, Kyle's view of Christians is what he's talking like the dead church Christian? Like, you're like, "Dude, that's freaking lame, right? That's kind of like where you come from." >> I just don't So, I'm I'm pretty binary in my thinking, pretty binary in how I talk, how I categorize things, and I just have like this natural like aversion to squishy middle like nuance. It's my least favorite word in like in the English lexicon. I hate it >> because it's like either just be about it or just don't like because there there's there's no squishy middle. And so >> unfortunately some people are going to listen uh not listen to your talk before they listen to this just cuz they they like deepen or they like my show or whatever. If you wouldn't mind just flying over the Kennedy questions one time because I have a followup to that because I can just feel someone in my audience with the question I'm going to ask you. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, the Kennedy D. James Kennedy evangelism explosion in the 60s. I assume he came up with these questions. In fact, I've seen a documentary where his his wife said as much, but it's it's between 1 and 10. Uh 10 being certain, one being not so sure. If you died today, how certain are you that you would go to heaven? So, just if if you're hearing that for the first time, I'd encourage you just to pick a number. Don't go 0.5. Just, you know, one you probably wouldn't. 10, you're certain you would. Five, it's a coin toss. like where are you at in that? And the second question is if you stood before God and he said why should I let you in? What would you say? And so these these have been everywhere recently because someone just asked our our vice president these questions and that was that was the headlines of the news. But >> so we live in a post-truth culture and at the same time a post-enlightenment culture. >> But people that are like slaves to the enlightenment want to point to an evidentiary basis for truth. So, it's like, okay, have fun squaring that circle for the rest of the week. >> Mhm. >> But my question is, I feel like I know quite a few people that could very accurately and in a theologically correct manner answer question number two. >> Mhm. >> Right. Because I Yeah. >> Because he >> Jesus. Yeah. >> Yeah. Because Jesus. And they would say it however they say it. >> Right. >> Question one's a little bit >> It's a little bit more than prickly. >> Yeah. >> Because question one tells you both questions tell you who you're dealing with and who you're talking to. Gives you an idea of where you need to go. Yeah, >> but I mean JP, I feel like I know dudes that are would answer the question two like Spurgeon would and on question one they'd say I'm a nine just because like how can we know? No. >> Yeah. >> You know what I mean? >> Yeah. Yeah. 100%. >> Or or anything. And like I mean I had a a guy who, you know, has a Christian platform recently said, "Dude, I'm a one." Cuz like in humility, like I'm a one. Like it's it's up to God. Like I'm not God. >> Yeah. And I would just say like do we like where do we hear about like somebody will say well I believe in Jesus. Um I say where why you know and they're not going to go well because the writings of Josephus Flavius or Tacitus or Ply the Younger. They're going to go because Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and and this guy Paul and and really Isaiah and you know these people talked about Jesus even in and you know Genesis 3:15 we see this narrative. Oh. Oh because of the Bible. So you believe the Bible is true. Like if somebody says, "Well, I don't believe the Bible's true." I said, "Well, then why would you ever believe Jesus?" Because the Bible is the source of where we get this idea of Jesus. Yes, there's other external sources. But ultimately, you believe in Jesus because of a collection of 66 books written over 1500 uh 1500 years by 40 different authors on three continents and three languages. Okay. So, the Bible Okay. So, do we believe the Bible's true? If we believe the Bible's true and we take it as word, well, 1 John 5 11-13 says, "And this is God's testimony. God has given us eternal life and this life is in his son. Whoever has the son has life. Whoever does not have the son does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the son of God. Verse 13 now so that you may know that you have eternal life. So right there in the scripture black and white it says we can be confident. So does this mean that we never doubt that we don't have these these moments of of uh a lack of faith? It means that we can hold fast to the promise of God that we can go Romans 8, there's neither height nor depth nor nor any principalities or anything in all of creation that's going to separate us from the love of God because Ephesians we've been sealed by the Holy Spirit. So if God keeps his promises, then the most humble position that you can be in is I'm a 10 only because of God, only because of what he did for me. Um that's all I all I can boast in. Paul says, "His grace is sufficient." Which I love that. His grace, what is grace? I like the acrostic God's riches at Christ's expense. G r a c. God's riches at Christ's expense. >> So, us getting a gift that we could never deserve. His grace is sufficient. It's enough. His power is made perfect in my weakness. And so, all you know, if you doubt, I'd say doubt your doubts. Like, my doubts push me closer to my need for a savior. It's like I I I doubt me, but I don't doubt him. >> Yeah. >> You know, and so >> that's where I'm like, okay, the scripture says we can be a 10. The same scripture that answered the second question >> answers the first question. >> I like that. >> Well, and as you were saying that, I was thinking of 2 Corinthians 10:5. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. And the second part's the hammer. It's like, and we take captive >> every thought and make it accountable with Christ. That's an it's an active, not not a passive thing. we take captive >> every thought and make it accountable to Christ. And there's applications of that verse for all kinds of things, addictions, you know, agreements that we've made, all that kind of stuff. >> I just wonder even how in light of what Paul's writing in second Corinthians, how that applies to question one to the person that >> for whatever reason that it's almost like they have an incomplete view of Christ. Cuz when when people >> say, "Yeah, I don't really believe in God. I don't believe in Jesus." I was like, "Hey, could you would you mind describing them to me because I may not believe in that God either." Yeah. >> Right. And so because if what they describe is not an accurate depiction of, you know, any part of the Godhead or the triune nature of God, then it's like, "Hey, I don't believe in that God either. So, can I tell you about the real one? Can I tell you about Yahweh?" Right? >> And so, I just >> there were a lot of questions for me after you said what you said because it's true. And I just, man, I just I'm brokenhearted with some of the conversations I have with men that just they want to get there and there's just something blocking them. Well, let's define the terms real quick. In presence, so heaven, we're talking about heaven and hell. So, I I believe that that every soul will be in one of these two places for eternity. Heaven or hell. I believe that comes down to what you did with Jesus Christ. What you believed about Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. Not might be saved, could be saved, should be saved, would be saved, but will be saved. It says, okay, so I believe heaven is the presence of God. Like the greatest thing about heaven is that God's there. The worst thing about hell, what's so terrible about hell is that there's nothing of God there except his wrath. There's nothing good there. There's no some people are like, "Hell, we're going to party and you know, drug sacks and rocking." No, man. No, no, no. There's nothing that will bring you any enjoyment whatsoever in hell. It's only suffering, weeping, and nashing of teeth is described. And so the only thing that we can do in hell, the only to-do item, the only list to check off is suffer for your sins forever. You might say, "Pay for your sins forever." That's all you can do in hell is pay for your sins forever. What I believe happened on the cross is Jesus paid for our sins. And so, you know, a loving God says, "Listen, I don't want you to have to pay for your sins, so I'll pay for your sins. All I need you to do is trust in the payment that I paid for your sins." So it is as you said binary like a lot of nuance is not needed here. Do you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and do you believe he raised from the dead? Because if you do, you now have become a child of God. You can't be mostly Christian. You know, you can't be somewhat Christian. You can't be kind of Christian. It is totally binary. And you are not a Christian because you checked the box and it said, "Hey, what's your religion?" and you said, "Oh, well, because I'm American and my parents went to church, I'm Christian." No. What makes you Christian is the Holy Spirit lives inside of you because you've trusted in God's provision for us through Jesus Christ. >> Yeah, Pastor Joby, I know a little bit of your testimony because you've shared it. And what is it about a young Christian who's struggling through this is we're talking about assurance, you know, like you like there's some compulsion sometimes to keep going back. I just better make sure. I mean, I prayed the prayer as a teenager a hundred times, you know. So, what what is it? Is that is that person not there yet? Or is there a natural like in the infancy of faith? >> Is there a natural doubt? >> Sometimes it's really bad preaching >> and a lot of times it's just biblical illiteracy. >> Oh yeah. >> And you put those two things together and if you've got biblical illiteracy, you don't know it's not good preaching. >> Yeah. you know, and there's a bunch of insecure evangelists >> trying to get all the people to raise their hands, >> you know, and they'll take like the wheat and tears to a place that Jesus never intended it to be or something like that, you know. >> And so, anybody that does that, it can often be a worksbased righteousness, you know? >> Yeah. >> I mean, even you made a comment as people were coming forward tonight, you were like, "Listen, man." Some of you, you're like, "Well, I got saved years ago. I ain't here to argue with you." >> Yeah. M >> just make sure you know you're saved right now. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> You know. >> Mhm. >> I love the assurance of salvation. One of my favorite uh two verses. Ephesians 1:13 and 14. In him you also when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him. I teach this all the time. That word believed is puo. It doesn't believe it doesn't mean believe that. It means believe in. >> I think that's a southern trap right there bro. >> Right. from Texas to Florida. There's a bunch of people that can regurgitate what they believe happened, >> but they have not yet trusted in Christ. >> Yeah. >> That I believe when he said to Telstai, paid in full, that counted for me. All right. >> And then look what happens next. We were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. And this is what the spirit does. >> Who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the pra praise of his glory. This is a guarantee. Yeah. >> Well, I'm I'm actually glad you brought that up because I I was intending to. So, this is perfect. So, you and I have talked a lot about we share a deep respect for Jordan Peterson, the the work that he's done. And depending upon who you talk to, they think he's saved, they think he's not saved. But then whenever you talk to him, one of his least favorite and most often asked questions is, "Do you believe in God?" And then he'll get in, he'll go into a 17-minute explanation about what do you mean by mean and what do you mean by belief? And like it's great, but like he's a great dude. of is is >> but yeah right and so but he had a couple of very interesting things that happened in the last last couple years before he's been out with his sickness and I've been praying like crazy for him and you know I want him to be back in the public square mixing it up he got somebody it was um that Alex guy is a atheist guy who does all these debates and everything >> and he said look Jordan let's simplify this if there were a camera pointed at the mouth of Joseph of Arythea's tomb and you saw Jesus put in there and here you are right now today and you had a monitor that was showing what was going on. What would what would happen? And Jordan Peterson paused for a moment. He said, "Well, I I believe that we would see Jesus the Nazarene get up and walk out of that tomb." Now obviously this Alex Alex Okonnell I don't know this Alex guy didn't ask him and so have you placed your faith in that and so he he has a deeper level of respect and understanding of the script scriptures than almost every Christian I know right >> right sad >> so he knows that Jesus died and rose from the dead but the puo part is the part that he is at the very least not publicly proclaimed as a reality for his life and so Again, I worry especially for the Southerner, right? The person I'm a Christian cuz I was born in Texas and I vote Republican. And it's just like that's great and all, but and but they can tell you all these things about Jesus, >> right? >> And our mutual buddy Matt Chandler's eldest daughter grew up in Matt Chandler's house. She could break apart your debate in Latin. You know what I mean? Like she she could just bust you to pieces. >> She had never pushed duoed until relatively five minutes ago, right? And now she's on fire. And like >> and I know there's nothing I can do JP, right? I feel the burden, Joey. I feel the burden to to try to get someone like you're there and then just whoop, you know, push them over the line, but it's just >> you what what do you stand and do in that moment? >> Well, I I love that story. I mean, this this is this is my story. I mean, I was I was raised in church. I went to church school. This is this is the part I didn't share. I got the religion award out of nine years. That was a real thing. >> Wow. >> They had a religion award. At the end of the year, one person in the class would get the religion award. And kindergarten through seventh grade, I got it. And Brandon Arasco beat me the eighth grade year somehow. >> And and so there I am with with, you know, nine or eight religion awards. And Baptist, you I went to altter calls, all the things. I I'm going to multiple churches. I went to the church. I went to Gloretta Center, all the things. And you know, Dawson McAllister, you know, if you know what that is. And here I am confronted as a young adult with this question between 1 and 10. And I'm like, I'm a seven. And they said, why? And I said, because I've tried hard and I've done good things. I'm addicted to pornography. You know, I'm I'm sleeping with my girlfriend. I'm getting drunk every I'm I'm partying every opportunity I can. If there's drugs there, I'll do them. I don't care. And I'm sitting there telling somebody um because I'm a pretty good person and I've done good things. And I'm like I don't like I learned that somewhere like somehow in church somewhere in church along the way I learned that if I just do good this is eastern philos this is karma I'm spitting out you know I'm like hey if I just do good things you know maybe I'll come back as something better than this. And uh and that's why I love this story. Jesus, it shows up in uh Matthew 19, Mark 10, Luke 18. Jesus has this conversation with a guy that everybody esteems as a spiritual giant. Everyone there is like this guy is the guy. And he says, you know, good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus like be perfect. He goes, good news I am. And Jesus, well, there's one thing you lack, Mr. Perfect Man. sell everything you have, give it to the poor and follow me >> and then you'll have treasure in heaven. And Jesus, he's brilliant because he just goes right after the idols. I mean, just like the woman at the well, he's like, "You're right when you have no say you have no husband cuz you've had five and the man you're with now is not." >> And he just he knows your idol. And this man, he's he knows this man >> thinks that he's going to get to heaven by being a good person. >> And and he leaves sad. >> And like that is all the Southerners and churchgoers. And so like I feel like my whole ministry is evangelizing Christians. I'm saying in air quotes if you're listening, you know, people who have been in church their whole life. And and for me, for me to become a Christian, I had to I had to be confronted with the reality that I wasn't one. And that's how I became one. And that's a big a big wall to climb over. >> And I'm not I don't know who's a Christian. I mean, I can't see someone's heart. I mean, if I, you know, examine their life, maybe, you know, you know, a tree by its fruit, but by a driveby and an introduction in a in a town that I don't live in, I don't know who's a Christian. And so, I don't know where that cognitive dissent, you know, or or ascent, I should say, to where you're like, okay, I really believe upon this. >> Um, I trust in it and oh, I just answered wrongly. I was you put me in a corner. I wasn't thinking clearly. I I don't I'm not here to argue with you, but but I can tell you for me, I I had to come to a place where I'm like, you know what? I'm not a Christian >> and I'm ready to become one. >> Yeah. >> And that change and what happened is my life my whole life changed. And prior to that, I was just going around saying, I'm a Christian and living like a pagan because I was a pagan. >> Hey guys, real quick. I know a lot of you train for very specific things. So in the in the time we're in, I'm curious because Joby and I did a discussion that'll come out on my show next month. You know, you he spent a lot of time digging into different es esqueological categories and groups and okay, this is would people plant their flag here? this is what they mean and this is what they mean and you know you know I know a lot of people I go to church you know Dr. from Mark Hitchcock. A lot of end times stuff, not prediction of dates and I broke down the code, but just like explaining what times we're living in. I think you would be hardressed to say that considering what we're seeing now, you know, war in Persia and Gog and Magog coming through and the the, you know, the spread of Islam, different things. It seems like the the don't wait thing, again, if you haven't listened to JP's talk, go back and listen to it. The don't wait thing >> seems more intense than I think people can realize because we all know it could be any hour. It could be any second. It could be in the next two seconds. But I don't feel like JP the the the person that's been a Christian for a long time that's gotten really comfortable with their standing and what they've accomplished >> understands how desperately they need to put the message out there of don't wait. >> And these are people that haven't spent a lot of time thinking about this theology. Well, I can't save them anyway, so why do I need to preach it? And like, no, no, they haven't even thought about it that deeply. They just get to a place where they're like, "Yeah, I bet someone will tell them." And I just, man, I'm terrified for those people. >> Yeah. Yeah. Say probably not a believer. I I don't know how you can like go to the grocery store and and co-exist with people. And this this is where there's so I mean, we could go there's a lot of places we go here. I mean, people care about sea turtles and and whales and, you know, uh puppies at the pound and and kittens on the on the street, and yet you're in a grocery store and you legitimately believe, hey, a lot of people, most of the people in this room that occupy the space that I'm in, they're going to be eternally separated from God and suffer forever and ever and ever in the worst kind of way, worst than rape, worst than than torture, worse than anything imaginable. And I know I'm opening the door and say, "Well, how could a loving God do this?" Like, he didn't. He provided a way so they didn't have to. Like, that's the thing. That's you you got to stop with that argument because a loving God said, "I do not want that." And yet, if you run from me, you're not going to like what you run to >> cuz you're going to you're going to get not me. And where God is not, it's like like darkness is the absent of light. Cold is the absent of heat. Hell is the absent of God. Evil is the absence of of God, a good God, right? And so we if you run to that, you're only getting what you asked for, you know, and and so I don't know how we could be in the grocery store, know that people are going there and and not share, you know, and not have a heart to be like, I've we've got to share the gospel. So, I don't I don't think there's a lot of Christians who are pretending to be Christians who are actively sharing their faith in love. Maybe they're like trying to win arguments and stuff, but actively sharing their faith in love. That's probably a pretty good litmus test of what they actually believe. And I don't think likewise there's a lot of Christians who are actually Christians who never share their faith. >> And and so again, I'm not trying to make Christianity worksbased. I'm saying the works are the evidence of the belief. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. That's a You want to pray a prayer God wants to answer? >> Yeah. >> Pray this one. Lord, who do you want me to talk to? >> Yeah. >> So, um around here, uh we have every single person at our church, staff, everybody, elders, everybody identify their one more. This language we use is Acts 11:24 says he was a good man full of the Holy Spirit and faith and a great number of people brought to the Lord >> in the kingdom of God. A great number is not how many people come to saturated. A great number is just one more. >> Just one more. >> Cuz he's the kind of shepherd that leaves 99 for the one. Right. >> Yeah. >> So, I'm doing high school camp a couple years ago and my son's there serving and I do a big one more talk. All these high schoolers come up and write down their one more's name on this board. And then my son comes to me and like, "Dad, I know you lead people to Jesus all the time, but who's your one more?" And I was like, "I've been kind of slack, bro. When I was coaching you, I I mean, I baptized all your buddies, all your buddies friends. Like, we were on it. But then I just kind of taken my off the prize, you know what I mean? I mean, I I would I would no problem on a plane prompting the Holy Spirit, which is easy, dude. I just bring my Bible with me because I got to write a sermon, and I just put the thing out and I people always look at it. I'm like, you don't, you know, it's it's a conversation. It's not hard to have anyway. >> So, I was like, here's my prayer. All right, Lord. I got to get around some more lost people. Not random lost people, but some people I'm going to have relationships with. So, I quit going to my gym where nobody talked to me cuz it was like this kind of fru, you know, it was super bougie. Everybody's like a CEO or something. So, everybody respects your time. >> And I train at the big meat hand gym just right across the street. I'm like the fourth biggest chick in there, dude. I mean, it's just all pro bodybuilders. It's awesome. >> We baptized eight people out of that gym this year. >> Yeah. Let's go. >> Yeah. >> And I walk in there and I'm like, "All right, Lord. What? Do you want me to pray for somebody? You want me to talk to somebody? >> Yeah. >> And then I also don't try to hide. I I just wear all my Jesus clothes because I know some people are like, I think I may have seen that guy on YouTube. Is that him? >> Yeah. >> Well, I got on like a, you know, 11:22 hat or a Jesus loves you shirt or whatever. >> And it's as simple as this, man. I'm in there the other day >> and I'm finishing up kind of in a hurry. I'm getting my stuff together and I'm just telling you, God wants to answer this prayer. And I just had I'd walked almost out and I came back in. I was like, I'm supposed to talk to somebody. Lord, who is it? Yeah. >> And then his dad I know walks over and he's like, "Hey man, how you been?" I give him a hug >> and he's like, "Man, my son's in town for Princeton and uh >> uh I'm trying to get him to go to church with me." And I was like, "Where's he? There he is." >> Yeah. >> Where's Point him to me and then I just go, "Bro, that is a prayer." Yeah. >> And here's what's going to happen, Christian. >> This helps me in my mind. >> Yeah. One day we give an account for every word, right? Yeah. One day you'll stand before the king. >> Yeah. >> And let's just say you you share your faith with somebody at Walmart >> and God's like, "Man, that wasn't me. I didn't tell you to do that." Yeah. >> You're cool. >> Yeah. >> He ain't going to be mad at you. >> Right. >> But what I do not want to have happen is I don't want the Lord to be like, "You knew." Yeah. You knew that I was telling you to just lean over and be like, "How you doing?" >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Can I share something on the on the tail end of that? So, I I think there's probably some people listening, watching that are like, "Yeah, cuz you guys you're pastors and you you got the verses and you're you're extroverts or you're outgoing and and maybe someone recognize you. You see a Bible and you got the layup." It's my daughter, she's 17 introvert you know, she's just she's she's different. I mean, she's she's academic, she's smart, uh she's got a lot of her mom's skills. And I mean this girl, she's leaving the Y this week. This is this week. It's just like I mean it's just like the stories from this girl. She's a Muslim in her in her class, in her study class, and she's just been working on him. And she was supposed to be transferred. She was going to play a sport. And then she ended up not playing the sport because she didn't want to have to transfer from that class because of the ministry opportunity in front of her. I'm like, I'm just like, who what's 17 year olds making that choice? Right. Text. And then and she she she goes to the Y. She's leaving the Y and she felt the Holy Spirit say, "Hey, I want you to share with this person behind the counter." Disobedient. She like she's in the car. She's like, "Oh gosh, God. I know I'm I didn't listen to you." You know, and she's just like, "If you if you, you know, slow me, maybe you'll slow me down at the crosswalk and I'll I'll go back." Well, sure enough, this girl darts in front of her at the crosswalk. And so she's like, "All right." Right. So, she's legally parks, goes back inside, and says, "Hey, I this is awkward. I know I already left. I just just felt like I need to come back and just ask you, is there anything that I I can pray for you for?" And the girl's like, "Uh, I mean, yeah, I guess you can pray." And she goes, "Well, do you have a faith?" She goes, "I'm actually," it's interesting, you know, I've actually been exploring faith. I I' I've been kind of thinking what what do I want to be? and a a friend had invited me to church, but I haven't gone yet, but I kind of been interested in, you know, seems like a lot of people here are Christian. And she's like, "Do you know what that means?" She's like, "I have no idea." She just walks her through the gospel, prays with her right there. You know, the girl, and I'm just like, so Finley takes away all of our excuses because it's not her wiring. It's not, you know, she's not the whatever you want to say, the ENTP, anyagram 7, whatever the thing is, the otter, you know, or the golden retriever. No, I mean, she she is the other extreme on all of those spectrums, but she just she knows the word and she's like, I can't deny what I see in the scripture, so I want to walk in obedience. And I will tell you that girl, that 17year-old young woman has has a higher hit rate than any of us. I mean, we're in HB and I can't find her and she's praying with somebody to trust in Christ in the aisle just because I think there's like a it doesn't because it doesn't come naturally. It's not a personality. There's a real grace is sufficient, power is made perfect in weakness. If dependence is the goal, weakness is the advantage. When she goes into those conversations, she's just like, "God, I am desperate for you to give me the words here. I can't do this by my own strength." And like the Lord saves more people do that young woman than anyone I know. Well, JP, the word you used was, you said it several times, you're either being obedient or disobedient. Yeah. >> There's no nuance in that. It's like you're either being obedient to the call or not. >> And I think some people feel like when they walk out and get in the car that they burn the opportunity and they can't undo it. >> And man, same thing. I'm I'm in Louisiana speaking at an event. I'm in the gas station. I need to go get something. And I heard it's clear as day, you need to talk to this gal behind behind the counter. And it was like, well, I God, I I just can't, you know, I got this schedule. I got, you know, I got people. I got places I got to go. I'm the guy that says you can never be late. I go out to my car and I'm literally one boot in the truck. I'm like, and then I go back inside. >> And even if it's not a salvation, a gospel conversation. It could be a ministry opportunity cuz I go back in and I'm like, "Hey, I know this is awkward. I just left. I'm coming right back in here." I felt this overwhelming sense that I was supposed to come back in here and ask you how I can be praying for you. Not if I can pray for you. That's yes. No, it's how. It's the assumptive close of yes. Well, in between the cash register and the computer screen or whatever, she pulls out this little devotional, right? But she can't make sense of it. And I didn't give this girl the time of day or the attention when I was paying. >> Yeah. >> But now I can notice things about her. >> Yeah. >> She's got some bruises on her neck. >> Yeah. >> She She's got some evidence of some other things that are going on in her life that's written on her arms and on her face. >> Yeah. >> I didn't see it whenever I was in my self-important narcissistic. I got to go be somewhere on time so I can be the on time guy. Yeah. >> And then whenever I slowed down and said yes, Lord, it was just like, >> well, here we go. You know what I mean? And we just were disobedient more than we realize. >> She's the Ethiopian unic. >> Yeah. No doubt. >> If I could paraphrase your message, it's what in the world could keep somebody from the kingdom. And it was those three things. You know, you think too high of yourself, you think too much of the world, you think too little of God's kingdom. And the thing that I mooded really hard to it, the one line when you said, "If you think your bad deeds will keep you out, >> yeah, >> then you think your good deed is going to get you in." I mean, it's it's work. It's still works based. >> But on this idea of obeying God, I think we miss out on the joy. >> Like the third point is when you don't think enough of the heaven of the kingdom of heaven, >> essentially the joy is unbelievable. It's going to be unbelievable. And the same is true of walking in obedience to God. Like we think, "Oh, it's going to be so weird and awkward." Uh, but actually it's the best thing that happened to you all week, you know? What is that about? >> Yeah. Think about Mark, too. And nobody ever talks about this. Imagine the day the four guys that toted the guy in and dug a hole in the roof when they're walking home. >> Yeah. >> They're like, "This is our best day ever." >> Right. >> You know. >> Oh, yeah. I mean, yeah. you know, having having a good marriage, you know, and I mean, I don't anything you say is worldly here, and I it's not I don't want to make it sound boastful, but I will say this. I've I've tasted the world, >> you know. I've I've woke up hugging the toilet in the strip club, >> you know. Uh I I mean, I I had the world and and it and it wasn't like it wasn't fun. I mean, I laughed and fun. and we're chasing the next thing. There was just always a hangover. There was always a pregnancy scare. I mean, there was always a, you know, you I woke up in jail. I mean, there was always that there was a consequence. Oh, man. There was a I was I was in a green room once and this there's a young woman there and she's been just I mean, she has just faithfully followed Jesus her whole life. I mean, you know that that person, I'm sure. I mean, she just never sipped alcohol. Never I mean, she just straight and narrow, man. She She was like, "This is the the life." I don't I don't even want to like dabble in those things, you know? Not that that that would be sin, but she's just I'm just right here. Straight and narrow. Never kissed a boy till she met her husband. I mean, they dated short-lived, kissed at the altar. I mean, that's this girl, right? >> And so I said, and I knew she would be ready for this question. We were there. Everybody circled up. And I said, "Why?" I said, "Why, you know, why is your life better than mine?" I was like, "Here's the deal. We both get heaven in the end. You know, I've I've been to Vegas. I've been in the clubs you've only heard about. I've tried the drugs you've you've, you know, read about. Uh I mean, I've I've got the memories. I've had the fun. You know, all the things. And yet now you work for somebody who works for me. And we both get heaven. It's like, why, you know, why why is your life better than mine?" And she didn't hesitate, bro. didn't stop like didn't even have to think about. She goes, "Oh, that's easy. I've had more fun and I have less scars." >> That's what she said. She said, "I've had more fun and I have less scars." And I just would tell you she's right. >> Amen. >> Like she's right. I mean, I I can't have a spiritual embodime. >> And and um and she had the kind of fun that was pure like milk coming out her nose, you know, stomach hurts the next day. She laughed so hard with no hangover, no pregnancy scare, no no risk of breaking the law, no no ex wanting to hunt you down. Like none of that was there. She's had more fun. She has less scars. I'm like, she's right. >> Mhm. Yeah. That's just exposes the lie. Like the video before you went up there and it was just like it's telling you all these making all these promises. You say it often, Pastor Joby. It's lies. They can't give you those three things. They can't give you what they're promising you. >> Yeah. and John 10, man. I mean, the only thing the enemy wants to do, steal, kill destroy. >> Mhm. >> So, you think it's fun? And I'm not saying you don't have a good time. I've done all the things you're talking about except the drugs part, but I've done all the other things. And >> it it is, bro, it's a lure. That's what it is. I like to bass fish a lot >> and you use a lure, and every lure has a hook. >> Yeah. >> And he doesn't care how he gets you. This is the thing, man. He's got three major lures. Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life. And dude, if the pride of life thing doesn't work, he'll clip that thing off and he'll throw out the lust of the eyes. And if if that ain't your >> flavor of sin. >> Mhm. >> Then he he'll try to lust of the flesh. >> And here's what's crazy, man. And it might be cocaine or it might be cookies. Yeah. >> It don't matter. >> Yeah. It don't matter. >> Cuz the dangerous one right now is the person that'll listen to this and I don't I didn't go to strip clubs. >> Mhm. >> I didn't do any of that stuff. Yeah. >> Yeah, man. >> That's just the pride of life with a choir robe on, bro. >> That's the second the guy in the second pew. >> Yeah. >> Before we before we wrap up, Pastor Joey, we talk to the person who's thinking, "All right, I got to get out there and just every person I meet and I just going to there's not I'm not going to pass a single person and they're just thinking they're putting that weight on their shoulders." John 2:5. Why is that the mo the most important message? >> Whatever he tells you to do, he told us all to go and make disciples wherever we wherever we are as we are on the go. make disciples. You start praying hard. >> Yeah. >> And you start saying, "God, I'm going to pray. I I I'm asking you to give me the opportunity to do what you have commanded us to do." >> And now, Lord, and especially if you're kind of new to this and Lord, I'm not good at understanding >> where my opportunity is. >> So, could you make it so clear to me this is these are prayers that God wants to answer. Yeah. >> I remember one time back in the Blockbuster days, remember the glory days? >> Yeah. And bro, I'm and I must look lost because I have people witness to me. This is 1122. And I'm walking in the store and all I can think about is the movie I want to get for me. I'm a youth pastor in that town. I'm trying to get me a movie to take it home to watch to watch with Gretchen. And this guy comes up and he starts striking up a conversation and I was like, "Ah, this is a Christian. I'm just going to kind of see how he does. I'm kind of I'm not going to like I wasn't a jerk about it, but I just let him go through his spiel, man. And and the and as I was leaving, the difference was that dude walked into that Blockbuster thinking about the kingdom and I just walked in thinking about me. That was the fundamental difference. >> Let's go. >> Cuz here's what you don't know. >> What you don't know, Kyle, is what that girl at the counter has been praying in moments of desperation and she don't even know who prayed who to pray to. >> And she's crying out, "God, if you're really there, >> yeah. If you if you hear this prayer, >> can you show yourself to me? And God goes, I hear you, Kyle. >> Yeah. >> Go. Yeah. >> That's the that and and then you got to know, man, you know, a little theology helps. Salvation is the Lord's, man. >> Yes. That's right. >> You can't talk anybody into heaven. >> That's a fact. >> I If you do this a little bit, you can become really sensitive to somebody that is receptive and somebody that's not at all. >> And I'm not I don't have to force conversations. I remember I was on a plane one time and uh it was just evident and man this this really young really pretty girl sticks to me and I'm like uh it's like my least favorite thing especially if she wants to talk and she was coming out of Amsterdam >> and she had been doing some shady stuff. I get my Bible out and I'm and she's she leans over she said you really believe that and I was like all right it's on. >> So we get into this conversation bro and she's she's I I'm just like God loves you. God created you. >> Like I didn't even start with sin. I started with creation. Like >> you were on purpose for God, you know, and >> and you like all the things that you would see as evidence that she's really leaning in. And then she's like, "Well, hold on one second. But what about the dinosaurs?" >> Yeah. >> And what about gay people? >> Yeah. >> And what about what about the guy that's on the island by himself? Yeah. >> And I'm like, "All right, time out. Are you gay?" She's like, "No." I'm like, "Okay." And you're not on an island? No. Are you a paleontologist? >> That's what I was going to say. No. >> So, let's can we let's just >> cuz a lot of times, man, you know, people are just trying to divert. >> And so, this is why Jesus >> That's right. smoke screens >> is the master teacher. It's exactly what you said. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Cuz I when when I would read the woman at the well. >> Yeah. >> And she was like, "Can I get some of this water?" >> Yeah. >> And then Jesus is like, "Yeah, go get your husband." Dude, if you're if you're coaching Jesus and evangelism, >> you're like, "Don't do that." >> You're like, "Hold on, man. No, no, no, no, no, no. right now is when when the keys play and you're like, "All right, every head bowed, every eye, >> close the deal, bro." He's like, "I ain't trying to close deals." >> Go bridge illustration. >> I want it all. >> Yeah. >> I think uh I didn't realize this. We're teaching through Matthew. So, when I was teaching on the rich young ruler, Jesus is the rich young ruler. >> Yeah. >> He was rich. >> Oh, yeah. >> He's on the throne. >> He's ruler. Yeah. >> He's young. He's 30 years old when he's standing there. >> And he rules all of heaven and earth. And what did he do? sold everything >> to come and purchase us for his father. >> He's the real I don't know if I said that, but he's the real rich young ruler. >> That's right. The one thing that you said that like smacked me in the face. >> If this guy isn't Mark, we don't have to get into that. But um but I I love some like biblically informed conjecture. I love I think that's you know that's black belt jiu-jitsu Bible nerd stuff right there. But >> if this guy walks away forever you I've never I've never heard anybody say this in my life. >> Guess what now? He ain't rich >> and he ain't young and ain't ruling anything. >> That's right. Wow. >> I want to thank you again JP for this and would you please just any final encouragements? I mean you ended with that powerful don't wait. Any final encouragement for us those listening watching and then close us in prayer? >> Just you could let me off easy not you want to mark not asking the mark question. >> I'm okay if we want to go into OT a little bit. They can wait. Do you want to do you want to do a quick fly over because I again >> Yeah. Give give the few uh the >> connect the dots. >> There's a few theories out there, right? And so some some say Bartholomew. But what's interesting on a deep dive on this is just like for 1,800 years of church history and the reason why Richard Wormbbrand said that so confidently is he's just like hey it's believed that um and so his words so the three observations Richard Wormbbrand in in print who was the uh leader of the voice of the martyrs um since has passed away I think 2001 he believed that and and taught that the rich young ruler was Mark, the gospel writer Mark. And he says Mark uses the Greek word euthos, which in our language means immediately. Mark uses it more than all the gospel writers combined. Um only in Mark does Jesus look Mark adds the detail. Jesus looked at him and loved him, had compassion on him. And only in Mark, and this is the the real fly flyer here, only in Mark is there this there's a naked man when Jesus is arrested. It's crazy. Only in the Gospel of Mark. And you're like, you know, you probably read it and you really, we should ask like, wait, who is this guy? This streaker. When Jesus is arrested, he's there with just a linen garment. And they take off the linen garment. So, there's just this man running away with no clothes on. And we I I would say I believe I got there that that is the rich young ruler that he left uh in disobedience and then realized sold everything he had, gave it away and then came back to follow Jesus and all he had left to his name was this linen garment. And uh and so Mark is saying what God asked you to do must be done immediately. So he repeats this word Euthos immediately immediately immediately. Um, and you know, that's that's an interesting I was I would clearly put that in the the the opinion category. The scripture doesn't say that black and white. I you know, I don't want to break fellowship with anybody says, "Hey, I think it's part of or I think the guy never came back." I I mean, for sure the the the text does not say, but it's an interesting tradition. >> That's awesome. Pray for >> Yeah. Yeah. I'd love to. Father, thank you for this for this resource that in it is embedded the greatest story that has ever been told, that has ever been heard. It's the only story >> that can allow someone by the power of your Holy Spirit to go from death to eternal life. And so I pray that you would multiply that in in the hearts of every ears that hear these words right now. that you would unleash the hounds of heaven and that you would just save everyone that's listening, that they would be secure, they would be children of God, and then that they would leave and go out and and it's not that Jesus is this bouncer standing there checking off who's been naughty and nice. It's that he's at the mouth of a bunker saying, "Come in here. The bomb is about to go off. Come in here. Safety is in here." And he with his arm stretched out on the cross, he's saying, "Come one. Come all. I died for you. I've raised from the dead. Salvation is found in no other name. >> For every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. And I I pray that this would be uh the the opportunity of the friends and the family and the neighbors and and the children of those who are listening that they would go and be emboldened that it it just as my my dear friend preaches and says and leads with it takes courage and clarity that we would go out with courage and clarity proclaiming the name of Jesus. Bless these friends and pour out grace and favor over everyone listening right now. And it's in the name of Jesus. Amen. >> Amen. Thank you everyone for listening to this episode.
