This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
0:24
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:26
Let's get into it.
0:27
All right.
0:28
Welcome to everybody listening to this right now.
0:29
Kyle Thompson, the host of Undaunted Life, a man's podcast and that guy over there, that's
0:32
Shelby Martin, the senior pastor of Church of 1122.
0:36
Now this is our normal digs in terms of when you and I talk because you and I have done
0:40
some stuff with your podcast feed.
0:42
You obviously come on my podcast feed once a month.
0:45
But we're doing this episode today because we got a special announcement.
0:48
We've been sitting on this idea and we've been sitting on this project for most of 2024.
0:53
But guys, if you're listening to this on time, this is coming out the very, very end
0:57
of 2024, because we have an announcement for the very beginning of 2025.
1:02
And that is that we were launching a podcast, right?
1:04
So, uh, Jobe Martin and I, we were launching a brand new podcast called The Daily Blade.
1:10
And so we'll get into kind of the specifics of what that's going to look like and kind
1:15
of where the name came from.
1:16
But Jobe, let me just tee you up to talk about it from the beginning because I'm pretty
1:20
sure I was trying to figure out like how this idea even came about.
1:23
But it's kind of like the last three or four ideas that you and I have had.
1:27
We just start kicking around ideas randomly, either like if we're hanging out in person
1:31
or via text message.
1:32
And then one of us says, yeah, we just got to do that.
1:35
So can you like remember where exactly this idea started?
1:39
Well, uh, some of the conversations that we've had, we both have obviously have a heart
1:44
to disciple men, um, regardless of how we phrase it, whether we equip men to push back
1:49
darkness or we help men deepen their relationship with Jesus.
1:53
And that is always rooted in God's word.
1:56
And um, I know on, on your podcast, you know, it's often topical and you are, whether it's
2:03
interviewing the latest author or talking about the latest political events.
2:08
It's always comes back to having a biblical worldview.
2:11
And then every single week of my life, I open the Bible and just teach the Bible.
2:16
Um, and so what men need, I think the, I think the conversation
2:19
began to get some traction.
2:21
When I was doing the stand firm series, the spiritual warfare series, um, in the fall.
2:26
And um, you know, it talks very specifically about the sort of spirit, which is the word
2:32
of God and that we have been equipped to fight off the enemy and his evil schemes.
2:37
And so I think, and you think what men need is men need to know the word.
2:43
And I also think God has put men in this work on this planet like me and you to help
2:48
all the other men in this world better know his word.
2:51
And so that's essentially all we are going to do is help people sharpen the sort of the
2:57
spirit, uh, that they are memorizing that they are learning and they're studying in very,
3:02
very small bite size segments, um, especially in the lives of busy men.
3:07
Uh, cause if you're really standing up and acting like a man, then you got a lot of people
3:13
to take care of.
3:14
You got a lot on your plate and I get all that.
3:16
And I'm not trying to diminish the importance of spending time with the Lord, but this is
3:21
a supplement to that that you could pop this on and in five to seven minutes, you're going
3:27
to hear the word.
3:28
You're going to hear the word explained.
3:29
You're going to hear the word applied.
3:31
And I don't know about you, but there's never been like one quiet time or one Bible study
3:36
that I've done necessarily that like changed everything because I did a nine hour study
3:41
on Romans chapter three.
3:43
But what has helped me is just those small deposits over a long period of time begin to
3:47
have that cumulative effect that I've just constantly tried to ingest the word of God.
3:53
And so that's what we're going to be offering.
3:55
Well, and so you're, I tried to describe your ministry to guys.
3:58
And so I described the size of your church and I describe your, your style and kind of
4:02
your all chucks, see Southern draw and all that kind of stuff, but everything you do is
4:06
kind of through the lens of manhood.
4:08
And I really don't like using the, the phraseology men's ministry anymore because every time I
4:11
say that people, people hear what I'm not saying, what I don't mean, which is, Oh, you
4:15
mean guys sitting around a circle like talking about their feelings and all that.
4:19
It's like, well, that happens, but I'm talking about a lot of other stuff.
4:22
And so that's why I started talking about man friendly churches and different things
4:25
like that.
4:26
But the truth is, is that a lot of men are well meaning that they, they, they want to
4:30
exercise and they want to take their wife and each of their kids out on very special
4:34
dates.
4:35
They want to do these rites of passes.
4:36
You want to do all that stuff, but they can't ever get any momentum going.
4:39
And so that's the thing with the daily blade.
4:41
I mean, we're talking, you know, three, three to seven minutes ishes what, what each day
4:45
is going to be.
4:46
And if you listen to it at two times speed, like I do, you're just going to burn right
4:48
through it.
4:49
But what you and I have kind of talked about over these last few months is like, okay,
4:53
we want to leave guys with, if you like the Greg Kocalism, we want to put rocks and guys
4:57
shoes.
4:58
And so because we're going to be taking it back to the scripture.
5:00
So sort of the spirit, the daily blade, get it, get it guys.
5:03
That's what it's called.
5:04
But we want to be able to give guys things that they chew on, right?
5:07
That aren't just like, Oh, here's some life lessons with a few little verses sprinkled
5:10
over it.
5:11
And what you and I kind of realize, because I think we started talking, I was, because
5:15
I asked you, I was like, Hey, are there any like daily devotional guided prayer things
5:20
that you do?
5:21
And what we both kind of came up with is a lot of people have tried to do that for men.
5:25
But the way it ends up sounding is it's over produced.
5:29
There's, there's, you could tell it's transcribed.
5:32
There's music playing in the background and it's supposed to be ambient noise, but it's
5:36
just kind of, it's like almost like putting you in this, like, flah, la, la, la, trance
5:41
state.
5:42
And it's like that's not where guys are.
5:43
Like if you're only your way to the job site, or if you're on the way to, to the, you know,
5:47
to work and it's not really the greatest situation or a fit your drive home and you got a bunch
5:50
of responsibilities.
5:51
Once that garage door opens, we want these guys to be getting stuff that's coming from
5:55
a masculine perspective, not made by dudes and hoping men will just kind of deal with
6:00
the rest.
6:01
You know what I mean?
6:02
Yeah.
6:03
And I wouldn't even use what we're going to do.
6:04
I wouldn't use the phrase devotional, um, I don't even know what that means, but, uh,
6:10
I get it.
6:11
It's a lot of heart and a lot of feeling and a lot of thought and what that's not what
6:13
we're doing.
6:14
The way I haven't even told you this, the way I'm thinking about this is I'm obviously,
6:19
you know this.
6:20
I'm a raging Georgia Bulldog fan and one of my favorite things to do is listen to a Kirby
6:24
smart halftime speech and, um, yeah, Kirby has obviously not read, uh, Ephesians four,
6:31
let no unwholesome communication proceed out of your mouth, but what he does, if you
6:35
listen to his speeches, as he speaks life into those dudes, he paints a very clear target
6:41
on the wall, he encourages him to go do it.
6:43
That's kind of what he does.
6:44
So imagine anybody that's going to tune in, whether it's me or you, it's, it's like we
6:51
are in the locker room.
6:53
We got a very short amount of time.
6:55
We've got a job to be done.
6:56
We've got an enemy on the other side of the field and here's our marching orders.
7:00
This is what God's word said.
7:02
So when I preach, it's different, man, because I preach for almost an hour.
7:05
So there's an introduction.
7:07
There's illustrations.
7:09
There's often a lot of humor and, you know, I want everybody to kind of, kind of suck
7:13
them in.
7:14
I'm assuming when you clicked play on your phone that you're in, you want to hear what
7:20
we're going to do.
7:21
And so there's really none of that.
7:23
It's very much, uh, in God's locker room, this is the halftime speech for you to march
7:30
into your day into your week into what God has called you to.
7:34
And it's all just going to be rooted in what does God's words say?
7:39
So what does that mean?
7:40
Now what am I supposed to do about it?
7:42
That's it.
7:43
Well, and ultimately I guess the other thing that you and I had as a goal is we wanted to
7:47
meet guys where they're at and guys are doing the audio thing because there are some great
7:51
ministries and great groups out there that'll send out an email every day.
7:54
We're here, some devotional material and for some of you guys, you love that.
7:58
And so if that's working for you, man, by all means, keep doing that.
8:02
But we know the data and the statistics and obviously you got people on your neck of the
8:06
woods are looking at metrics and what if we do this and what if we tweak that and it's
8:09
all gospel related gospel center stuff.
8:11
But for us, it's like, okay, guys are listening to podcasts and audio books.
8:16
It'd be cool if they had for lack of a better phrase, you know, devotional content, content
8:20
that like kind of takes them back practically to the scripture.
8:23
And like we just saw there's a dearth of that type of content for the guys that are into
8:27
you and me because there is a Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson type of a guy, right?
8:32
Because like if you're listening to my show because, you know, you know, I've talked about
8:35
this a lot.
8:36
A lot of times people come up to you at your church.
8:38
It's because they heard you here because of me and like I'm doing a bunch.
8:41
I did a bunch of interviews for Dominion, some other programs that we've got going on.
8:44
And it's like it's working back and forth and like I introduce guys to you and they're
8:48
like, where's this guy been?
8:49
You'll introduce guys to me and it's like, where's this guy been?
8:52
But there's kind of that type of a guy that the Christian bookstores are not looking to
8:58
get after that the Christian radio stations are not putting on music that speaks to or
9:02
sings to a guy like that.
9:04
And that's really what we're trying to do with this.
9:06
And the thing is, is because we're doing it out of an abundance of our authenticity.
9:10
Not like, Hey, we're trying to be this ideal version of what a masculine machismo man
9:15
isn't.
9:16
So we're doing, you know, a daily short form podcast that's to that type of a vein.
9:20
But at the same time, those guys that maybe walk into a lot of churches in America and
9:25
don't feel comfortable.
9:26
They feel out of place.
9:27
They've never been the guy at the men's ministry event.
9:29
That was the first one to pipe up.
9:30
Those are a lot of the guys that we're going after, but at the same time, this is going
9:34
to be consumed by men of all stripes and persuasions.
9:37
A lot of ladies are going to be listening to this as well with their husbands or brothers
9:42
or dads in the car.
9:44
So we're not making it for everybody, but it's going to be applicable across the board.
9:48
At least that's the way I'm looking at them.
9:50
So Kyle, I would just say this to everybody listening, man, we don't have to do this.
9:55
Like we don't have time for this neither one of us.
9:57
Yeah.
9:58
Right.
9:59
Yeah.
10:00
But the reason that we're doing this is because we have been commanded to make disciples that
10:04
make disciples that make disciples that make disciples.
10:06
Yep.
10:07
And, and so, I mean, we haven't thought about this at all from like a consumer standpoint.
10:13
Like, is there a market and who are we trying to, there's none of that.
10:17
We should just, how can we go wrong if we put our hearts into just trying to open up God's
10:23
word and make it available to anybody who wants to listen.
10:26
You know, it's very similar to the way the deep in podcast started.
10:30
People were like, why are you doing that?
10:31
I was like, cause I want to help people deepen their relationship with Jesus.
10:33
They're like, well, what if a lot of people don't listen?
10:35
I don't care.
10:37
I like talking about the Bible with my friends.
10:38
Yeah.
10:39
What about if people do listen?
10:40
Yeah.
10:41
Yeah.
10:42
Yeah.
10:43
What if what if 10 or 12 do that?
10:44
It's totally worth my time.
10:45
Yeah, this is not some kind of flash in the pan thing, the heart, my heart's desire is
10:49
just that people will engage with God's word.
10:52
You can trust what the prophet Isaiah says, the God's word will never return void.
10:57
It will always accomplish what God intends it to accomplish.
11:01
And so we believe God will be glorified, men will be encouraged.
11:04
You are right.
11:05
There will be a lot of very, very, very smart women that are listening in to men's conversations
11:12
that they may be able to love their husbands and sons and brothers better.
11:15
So yeah.
11:16
Joby, that's one of the best compliments I get because I get these emails, maybe a few
11:21
times a month or DMS, it'll be from a lady listener of my show.
11:24
And I mean, my audience is 90, 95% male, right?
11:27
So fairly aggro over here, but these ladies will be like, they will start out their email
11:31
with, I know I'm not supposed to be listening to your show, but so it's almost like the best
11:36
kept secret.
11:37
And I'm always corrected.
11:38
I'm like, no, no, no, you can listen.
11:39
And I just don't have you in mind when I'm creating the content, but you're exactly right.
11:43
These ladies are like, okay, what would my husband want to listen to?
11:47
And they know their husband pretty darn well, you know, inside and out.
11:50
And they hear your preaching or they hear how I approach a lot of cultural topics or
11:54
political topics or even forging table discussion go, Hey, those guys kind of sound like my
11:58
husband and his buddies, but they're always talking about football or cars or something
12:02
like that.
12:03
They're not ever talking about the Bible.
12:04
I wonder if it's because they've never seen it modeled before.
12:07
And that's, that was the whole reason behind the forging table selfishly.
12:09
I wanted to dig into the scripture more myself.
12:12
And I just wanted to model what, Hey, what would it look like if people with no Bible
12:15
or theology degree sat around a table and made mistakes, but ultimately just dug into
12:19
the scripture and came together and talked about it.
12:22
And so this is almost like a downstream of what you've done with deep and what I've done
12:26
with the forging table.
12:27
Yeah.
12:28
And I think, uh, I think it'll be very shareable.
12:31
Right.
12:32
Like, you know, if you've heard one two weeks ago and you've got a friend walking through
12:36
loss or whatever, then this person will be able to just be like, Hey, let me just, it's
12:40
it's five minutes, man, five minutes on loss or five minutes on pain or five minutes
12:44
on fear.
12:45
What, you know, I think it'll be very shareable also.
12:48
This is something I've shared with you and it made you cry a little bit, which I love
12:52
that we, we didn't have in mind at all, but you know, there's a bunch of single moms out
12:57
there like Chloe here in Jacksonville and she's, she puts on the forging table and she puts
13:03
on deep and when her and her son are riding around as just so she can have a man's voice
13:09
in the life of her boy.
13:11
And so I think also there can be a lot of mamas on the way to school with their sons
13:16
in the car and they could, they could get the daily blade every single morning.
13:21
And that's what we're shooting for.
13:23
And guys, this is not just just to the people listening to this right now and all the different
13:27
platforms.
13:28
This isn't a like, Hey, we're going to try this for a few weeks to see how it goes.
13:32
This is just something that Joe B and I are going to do now.
13:34
It's kind of the same thing.
13:35
I told the forging table guys, because we were like, ah, you know, let's figure out
13:39
if that that's going to be a good thing for my cadence and before we even recorded the
13:42
first episode, which I think was Galatians one, I was like, no, we're just going to do
13:45
this now.
13:46
This is just what we do now.
13:47
This is just part of our normal rhythm.
13:48
If we stop doing everything else, this is something that will continue.
13:51
And so for us, we want it to be imminently shareable and this is going to be the easiest
13:56
thing in the world for you guys because this is going to be coming out Monday through Friday
14:00
every single week, we'll give you all a break on Saturday and Sunday, but how the normal
14:04
cadence will go is it'll be Joe beyond one week Monday through Friday and then me Monday
14:08
through Friday, the next week and then you and then me, there might be a couple of times
14:12
where you were I double up based on the content that we're going into and, and, and, and we
14:16
can't give you all any names, but let's just say we got a list of some pretty cool people
14:21
that are already excited about potentially jumping in on this.
14:24
So we're going to prove the concept.
14:25
We're going to do it ourselves.
14:26
We're going to do the legwork.
14:28
But we've got some pretty high profile dudes that are already ready to jump in on this
14:32
and create 25 minutes worth of content to go out to a wide audience and to echo something
14:37
that you said earlier, because there's always the questions, right?
14:41
Because you know, you have an incredibly successful church.
14:43
It's growing into being one of the biggest churches in America.
14:47
And it's still got very, very solid deep theological roots, which is incredibly rare.
14:51
We have the number one podcast for Christian men in the world.
14:54
And so you might be thinking, okay, what's the angle?
14:56
What's the thing here?
14:57
Let me just tell you all right from the beginning because this is episode one, because if we
15:00
delete this because we end up going a different direction, there will always be a gap in the
15:04
numbering of our show.
15:06
We are not getting sponsors for this show.
15:08
You will never hear an ad on this show.
15:11
This show is literally free and will be free forever.
15:14
And we're doing everything that we got to do on our end money wise to make sure it goes
15:19
up on Spotify and Apple because it's going to be audio only.
15:21
So guys know YouTube, no rumble, but we're going to do everything we can to make sure
15:25
it's got a website.
15:27
It's got SEO that's driving it to try to get it in the ears of even more people.
15:31
And all that is at a cost to your ministry and my ministry in terms of time.
15:36
But again, as we've said, the benefit, the cost benefit ratio is so high if guys are
15:41
actually going to take this and apply it.
15:43
Yeah, man, we're just calling to make disciples.
15:46
That's it.
15:47
It's all we want to do.
15:48
And we trust that what needs to happen in the life of honestly, almost every man I know
15:53
is they need to be better equipped in the scriptures.
15:57
And again, there's a lot of men.
15:59
This is just a supplement, you know, be involved in the church.
16:03
You need to be in a Bible preaching church, you should be taking notes when your pastor
16:06
is preaching.
16:07
Amen.
16:08
This is not going to be John Piper desiring God verse by verse that those things are incredible.
16:18
It's way more like classroom oriented, you know, this is not going to be like a Tim Keller
16:23
kind of devotional.
16:25
That's way more kind of a theoretical philosophical.
16:29
It's not going to be necessarily like a John MacArthur take.
16:33
That's way more, I would say theological.
16:35
I think locker room, man.
16:37
This what the Bible says.
16:38
It's what it means.
16:39
It's what you got to do.
16:40
Let's go.
16:41
And I'm encouraged by it.
16:43
I mean, I get to spend a lot of time on the word by the grace of God.
16:46
The people here at 11 22 pay my pay me every two weeks to just sit in the woods, right
16:51
sermons and preach so much.
16:52
I love so much.
16:54
But this is great, man.
16:55
I've been very encouraged to even look at it like to take a passage of scripture, which
17:01
I would normally preach for 55 minutes on.
17:03
Yep.
17:04
And say, all right, man, five minutes.
17:06
What does this say?
17:09
Just to the guy driving to work today or dropping his kids off at school.
17:12
So I'm very excited and I can sense the Lord in it already because how could he not be
17:19
in it?
17:20
I mean, Jesus has abide me all about it in you and I feel like the disciples are kind
17:24
of look at him sideways because they're like, what do you mean?
17:26
And then he follows us up, abide in my word and I will abide in you.
17:31
And so that's what we're going to be doing.
17:32
We're just going to be like leaning into his word.
17:34
It'd be great.
17:35
Yep.
17:36
That's what we're going to be doing.
17:37
And I just got to tell you guys, I get excited just looking at our shared note because, you
17:40
know, you'll, you'll put some ideas down.
17:41
And I'll put some ideas down and we kind of see the cadence of, okay, this is where you're
17:45
going.
17:46
This is where you're going to focus.
17:47
Cause we're not necessarily flowing.
17:48
Okay.
17:49
I'm going to go off with what Joby just said last week.
17:50
We're kind of doing our own thing.
17:52
So you guys, if you started episode, I don't know when you're here in this.
17:56
If you're starting at episode 45 or at episode four, you can hop in whenever you want.
18:00
But again, guys, it's going to be on Apple podcasts and on Spotify.
18:03
And the very first episode is being released on January 1st of 2025.
18:08
So all of you new year, new me people, all you big podcast people, go ahead and hit the
18:13
subscribe button or the edition button or on whatever audio platform you're listening
18:17
to this.
18:18
And here's the last thing that I'll say, and Jobe, I'll let you have the last word.
18:21
Do not keep this a secret.
18:24
Guys have this weird thing where we'll find like a band or a random, you know, tool or
18:29
some jiu-jitsu move and for whatever reason, we think there's only so many pieces of the
18:34
pie.
18:35
So we can't just share all the stuff that we think is awesome.
18:37
This is the easiest thing in the world.
18:39
All these apps, they need people listening to it, right?
18:41
So they make sharing it via text message, email, carrier, pigeon.
18:45
They make it all super, duper easy.
18:47
So if you found this, if you're, you know, in my audience or if you're a church of 1122
18:52
or something like that, or if you're just a random person that found it, because Apple
18:54
podcast told you you might like it, share this around with the guys that you think will
18:59
consume it.
19:00
That's my last word on it.
19:01
Jobe, what do you got?
19:02
Two words.
19:03
One.
19:04
Here's what's good too.
19:05
If, if, if I'm not on one day and it's a dud, it's only five minutes, man.
19:08
You'll be fine.
19:09
Try again tomorrow.
19:10
Secondly, and very seriously, you have an enemy and the only thing he wants to do is
19:17
kill, steal and destroy.
19:19
And the primary weapon, the primary weapon to take ground against him is the sword of
19:26
the spirit.
19:27
And so one of the best things you could do for your country, your community, your family,
19:33
your church, your own salvation, the salvation of your children for your marriage is the
19:39
sharpened that blade every single day and be ready to fight.
19:43
We're here to help.
19:44
Let's go.
