Let's be honest, most men drift. We wake up, we scroll, we work, and then we just rinse and repeat. And we know we're softer than we should be. That's why I built the 31-day resilience reset. This is not a devotional, it is a field manual for men ready to stop drifting and start fighting back. So, for 31 days, you'll train your spirit, mind, and body with scripture, prayer, and daily challenges that forge real resilience. Go to www.undaunted.life/31days to download this resource for free. That's undaunted.life/31days. Start your reset today. This is Undaunted Life, a man's podcast. I'm your host, Kyle Thompson. Let's get into it. Joby Martin. >> Yes, sir. >> why I'm moving my hands together like this real fast? >> I have no idea. >> It's not because I'm trying to create fire, it's because I hope you had your Wheaties today, buddy, and drank a big old thing of coffee. Cuz you know what we're doing today, Joby? You want to guess? You want to know what we're doing? >> What are we doing? >> We are not only breaking, we are shattering the record for the most questions asked and answered on a single episode of Ask a Pastor ever. >> [clears throat] >> And so, I don't know, are you texting Gretchen to let her know what's going on? >> I was over in my Bible app so I can have a reference. >> going to need that. Not even going to need that. >> These are all lightning round questions, a bunch of different categories. We're not going to go for follow-ups unless I deem it necessary or if we go at the end, and we're going to put you in a lot of really uncomfortable positions. Are you ready and excited? >> I hope so. >> Okay, let's start let's start simple. It's this or that, so you only get to pick one. You don't get a third option, okay? Here we go. I don't know about you. We have to do this or that. >> exams that ask you the stupid questions like would you rather kick a baby or stab a puppy? You're like, uh >> Well, it's it's going to be like do you kill baby Hitler with a hammer or do you kill him with a hatchet? It's going to be like something like that. No, okay. So, this or that. You have to watch The View every day for a year or you have to watch every WNBA game for one team for the whole season. >> WNBA >> Okay, that was actually pretty easy. The view thing seemed pretty terrible. Here we go. The lovely 5% or Miss Gretchen Martin. She has to have a voice transplant. But there's only two options for voices that she could get. Either Joy Behar or Fran Drescher. >> Fran Drescher >> I picked the same one. Okay, this is very [laughter] good. Would you rather go blind or go deaf? >> deaf >> Okay, would you rather drown or burn alive? >> drown >> Oh God, brutal. Would you rather have to cut off a finger or cut off a toe? >> toe >> You're And you're the one cutting it off. Would you rather get punched in the liver by peak Francis Ngannou or kicked in the leg by peak Mirko Cro Cop? >> liver >> Oh, really? >> Yeah, I just feel like it'll heal itself. Your leg will just be broken. >> It also might explode. Okay, would you rather be struck by lightning lightning or bitten by a rattlesnake? >> uh rattlesnake >> Okay, trapped in a car sinking into water or trapped in a burning building? >> car water >> Oh, no, you Oh. >> I feel like burning >> Get out of the car, you're still in the freaking water. That's terrible. >> Uh all right, would you rather be deserted on a desert island or deserted in the middle of the Australian Outback? >> Outback >> All right, you're unarmed here. Would you rather fight a guy that has a sword or a guy that has an axe? >> axe >> You have to fight either a grizzly bear or a mountain lion. >> mountain lion >> Eaten alive by a great white shark or by a grizzly bear? >> A great white. I think they'd get it done quicker. >> Yeah, probably. Would you rather be waterboarded or Chinese water tortured? >> Water tortured. >> Okay. Uh JP or Reagan? >> Reagan. >> [laughter] >> Well, yeah, that was too quick. That was way too fast. JP actually listens to this, but at least we know how you actually feel. Okay. Now, we're going to we're going to uh like you know, take the foot off the gas just a little bit, but we're going to have dinner. Okay, but you can only pick one of these two people that can come to dinner with you. Johnny Cash or Elvis? >> Johnny Cash. >> Theodore Roosevelt or Ronald Reagan? >> Ronald Reagan. >> William Wallace or King Leonidas, the actual real-life people, not who they were playing in the films. >> William Wallace. >> Muhammad or Karl Marx? >> Oof. Muhammad. >> Ooh, good one. George Washington or Abraham Lincoln? >> Washington. >> Barack Obama or Joe Biden? >> Oh, gosh. It depends on whether or not I want to have a conversation or not. >> [laughter] >> If I want to be left alone, I can just eat with Biden. I'll pick Biden. >> All right. Kamala Harris or Nathan Apfel? >> Oh. Uh Nathan. >> Okay, very good. All right, now I need pet peeves. These are Jobie Martin's pet peeves in these different categories. What is your pet peeve when it comes to drivers? >> Uh too slow in the left lane. >> Amen to that. Pet peeves with people at the gym. >> Um the people that set up their little cameras and expect you to work out around them. >> Yeah, and rack your weights, people. Also, pet peeves with preachers. >> Uh people that don't use the Bible. >> Yeah, that's kind of a bad one. Pet peeves with your employees. >> Uh complaining. >> Pet peeves with your children? >> Same. >> [laughter] >> Pet peeves with your wife? >> Same. >> That is the trifecta. Boom, we nailed it. All right, now we're going to go to some Bible theology stuff. We're going to get us some some favorites or some different things here. >> Okay. >> What is your personal favorite book of the Old Testament? >> Oh my gosh. Um >> I mean, you already picked to your favorite kid. This should be easy. >> Man, lately it's been Proverbs. Okay. >> Proverbs. Favorite New Testament book? >> Um I'm teaching through Matthew right now, so right now it's Matthew. >> [clears throat] >> And you're crushing it right now, you and the rest of the club whenever you took like a 6-week vacation for no reason. All right, what is your favorite single verse? >> In the whole Bible? >> Whole Bible, you get one. >> Uh 2 Corinthians 5:21 is the whole gospel, you know. And God made him who was without sin to be sin for us that we would be made the righteousness of God. >> Praise be. All right, favorite hymn? >> Um How great thou art. >> Favorite modern worship song? >> Bro, brand new song called Seven Days. I think that's what it's called. >> Seven Days by who? >> Uh >> We'll look it up. >> I just downloaded it. Bro, it's a discipleship song. I read the lyrics in the in my sermon this week. >> not by Mary J. Blige, is it? Because that's She has a song called >> the Lord Studio. May the Lord Studio. You're going to love it, bro. It's like the whole thing is like you want him to be your savior, but not your lord. That's kind of the whole thing. One of it is like you don't know God by crying out to him on the floor. You know God by walking with God. That's a line. It's kind of like a sing-rap kind of I don't know, but it's not necessarily my genre, but dude, the lyrics. Why when you when you listen to it, put the lyrics up so you can see it cuz sometimes she goes so fast I can't compute. >> All right, we'll check it out. Uh Calvin or Wesley? >> Calvin. >> Most misunderstood verse in the Bible? >> Um oh gosh, I could get Philippians 4:13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. >> Wait, that doesn't apply to bench press? Come on, I thought that was uh for high school football players. >> Touchdowns, all the things. >> All right, who's your favorite prophet? >> Uh, [clears throat] I'm going to go Elijah. >> Who's your favorite apostle besides Paul? >> Peter, cuz I just resonate with him cuz I open my mouth all the time. >> All right, which one besides Peter? >> Um, you know, there's a Thomas never gets credit for when Jesus is like, "I'm going to go to Jerusalem and get killed." And he's like, "I'm in." >> Let's go. I I want to die with you. >> He's like, "Brave Thomas." >> nickname. >> I know. >> All right, [clears throat] which apostle would have been the best social media account to follow? >> Um, John would have had the most material cuz he likes John likes him some John, so maybe him. >> Favorite miracle performed by Jesus? >> [clears throat] >> Uh, other than the resurrection? >> He didn't perform that, he just participated. >> Okay, technicality. >> Yeah. >> Um, man, the water to wine one gets me just cuz there's so many implications there about he didn't say clean up the outside of the jars as a picture of the gospel. And then one of my favorite lines in regards to discipleship is at is when Mary tells the servants do whatever he tells you to do. >> Very good. Favorite miracle of God not involving [clears throat] Jesus. >> Uh, man. How about when Elisha brings the boy the Shunammite woman's boy back? I think it's a foreshadowing of the cross. Like he covers him. It gets kind of weird, he lays on him like >> he puts his face on his face. >> Yeah, I'm glad it's in the Old Testament cuz if we had to do that today, I wouldn't be doing hospital visits. I ain't I mean, I love you, but I ain't not to lay up on you in the bed. >> You might have to unhitch. Shout out Andy Stanley. All right, what is your favorite parable of Jesus? >> Uh prodigal son. >> What is the Bible event you would want to go back to and witness with your own eyes other than the resurrection? >> Uh Elijah calling down fire against 850 prophets. >> I want to hear his trash talk beforehand. I just want to be like, "NO, NO, NO, maybe your your god's taking a dump. Let's try harder." All right, what is the most underrated Bible character? >> Mhm. Um >> [clears throat and cough] >> How about Jonathan, the armor-bearer of David. >> Okay, very good. Most overrated Bible character? >> S- Probably Samson. He gets taught in kids' books like he's a hero, and he sucks until he doesn't for 1 second. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, there is that. All right, you can't say Jesus on these next few. The Bible character you'd most want to go on a hunt with. >> Um oh, that's good. Uh probably David. I mean, we could hunt from a long ways off. He's good with a slingshot. >> All right, Bible character you'd most want to have dinner with. >> Um man, Lazarus. I want to hear like, all right, what happened, dude? What was it like from your perspective? >> Where were you? Where were you for a few days? Uh Bible character you'd most want to get in a fistfight with. Well, that's good. >> Uh Pontius Pilate. >> Hey guys, real quick. I know a lot of you train for very specific things. All right, if you could kick one pair of animals off of Noah's Ark, which animals are going? >> Cats. >> Get out of here, kitties. All right, what's one hill that Christians are willing to die on that Jesus would say is not important? >> Mhm, that's good. Uh, personal rights. >> Say more. >> Uh, Jesus talks more about like taking responsibility than we do like personal rights, you know? I mean, I'm for them, obviously. I fight for them. But, like he never started a political party to stand up against Rome about what he was allowed and not allowed to say and do. He just did what the father told him to do and then endured the consequences. >> All right, very good. Favorite non-Bible Christian book. Not written by Joe Beer or Charles Martin. >> Mere Christianity. >> Of course. Big one. Uh, what's your favorite book that you've written? >> Stand Firm in Your Faith, Man. >> All right, now we're going to get into some favorites, so we're going to bring the speed up again. Favorite food? >> Sue gosh, steak. >> Favorite dessert? >> Gretchen makes a peanut butter pie with chocolate chips in it. >> And somehow I've been in Jacksonville about 11y billion times. I love peanut butter and chocolate. She's supposedly a fiber center, but there's no evidence to prove that right now, is there? >> I'll get her to make one. I'll get her to make one for uh, saturated. >> Let's go. Who's your favorite person? >> My favorite person? >> Yeah. >> In the world? >> In the world. >> Alive right now? Other than my family? >> No, doesn't have to be. >> Uh, my wife is my favorite person. >> Okay, now other than your family. >> Lars Peterson. >> And I will tell you Gretchen will probably be my favorite person while I'm eating that pie, so give her that shout out. What's your favorite sport to watch? >> College football. >> Favorite sport to play? >> Uh, is hunt Is hunting a sport? Or no? >> No, there's no defense. They don't know they're playing, remember? >> Um I guess golf. I mean, there's very few sports you can actually play. >> Come on. Like that's not a sport. >> Oh man, you're you're your own defense. That's That's why it's such a mind screw. >> Your whole life, what would your favorite sport to play? >> Uh wrestle. Well, it's probably football is probably my favorite to play, but wrestling was what I was best at. >> All right, favorite season. No, hunting is not one of the four seasons. >> The fall. >> Favorite song? >> Mm, ever? Sweet Child o' Mine, Guns N' Roses. >> Okay. Uh little foreshadowing as to what's going to happen later on this podcast. Uh what is the your favorite employee at Church of 11:22? >> Oh, wow, that's hard. Uh April Cruise. She takes care of our whole life. >> All right, what's your favorite Enneagram type? Trick question. The Enneagram is satanic, and no one should refer to it ever. Moving right along. Now, we're going to get into our least favorites. Least favorite food? >> Uh oh gosh. Um Least favorite? Liver liver? >> Okay. Least favorite dessert? Mint chocolate chip ice cream. Okay, let's go to the next one. Uh >> Yeah, that's a good one. Although, Gretchen, she she triggered me. She texted me individually and was like, "I love mint chocolate chip ice cream." I was like, "Who is >> podcast. >> Who's this woman? Who's this random woman talking to me? Why is she talking to me? What's your least favorite dessert if you had to pick one? >> Man, I don't know. Uh it's I uh pound cake. Like, with the fruit in it, you know, like the Christmas fruity pound cake thing. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, I feel you on that. Okay, who's your least favorite person? >> In the world? >> In the world. >> Um right now probably like I don't know, man. Mondami or something like that. One of these >> go with James Talarico. He's the worst. Uh okay. Least favorite sport to watch. Uh gosh. It's so hard. Women's golf. Ooh. No comment. Uh least favorite sport to play. That you've played, assuming. That's I don't know, man. Any kind of like track and field, any kind of running. >> [laughter] >> Like for no purpose. >> Yeah, the the purpose is to be fast. All right. All right, least favorite season. I don't really have one. I don't know. The dead of hot summer. Like in here, you know, it's 100°. Yeah. Least favorite song. Oh my gosh. No idea. Um I kissed a girl and I liked it, sung by a girl. >> [laughter] >> Okay, yeah, that that one will do it. Least favorite employee of Church of the 11:22. Oh, man. Uh no comment. I don't know. Yeah, I'll let you out of that one. Okay, now we need lessons here. We're go We're talking wisdom here. What's the biggest mistake you've made in ministry? Over prompt like I what I thought was encouraging to people uh they received received [clears throat] it as a promise. >> [cough] >> And so when it did not come to fruition the way they thought it would then they felt let down and lied to. Like if I were to say to you, man, you're doing such a great job. I could see us doing this forever together. And what they heard was, "Ooh, I'm going to be the next campus pastor of the next campus." Mhm. [clears throat] Got to be careful with that. >> Biggest mistake Biggest mistake you've made in governing your own home. >> Wow. Um If I've ever made a decision or when I've made decisions without consulting my wife. When I just decide this is what, you know, this is kind of punishment for the kids or whatever and us not being on the same page. >> Biggest mistake in parenting? >> Uh connecting praise to performance instead of to their person. >> Best leadership lesson that you've ever learned? >> It's John 2:5. Just do whatever he tells you to do. And the best leader is the clearest person with the most courage. Not the smartest, not the best strategy. Whoever's clearest first, you're the leader. >> Best leadership or best ministry advice you've ever received? >> Um if you are in ministry, the people do not exist so that you can do ministry. You exist to serve the people. >> Amen. Worst sermon you've ever given? >> Oh, the list is probably very, very long. >> There's one that's got to stick out. >> Um I Well, in my early days, like many, many people, I would just preach somebody else's sermon, you know, like I would I would just kind of have a Franken sermon of three or four different people cuz I wasn't I didn't I didn't have the confidence just in the word that I have today. >> All right. Something you're embarrassed that you believed 10 years ago. >> [clears throat] >> Uh that the government could be trusted. >> Woof. That's a onion we can peel back. But now we need to move on to some more wisdom. What's the number one piece of advice you would give a new husband? >> Uh >> [snorts] >> find an old man with a happy wife and a worn-out Bible and learn everything you can from him. >> What's the number one piece of advice for a new father? >> Enjoy every moment. It goes so fast. Don't Don't get enamored with like, I can't wait until. >> [clears throat] >> A little bit uh more pointed. Number one piece of advice to a father of a son. >> Uh read stand firm and act like men and grow them into that. >> Number one piece of advice to a father of a daughter. >> Uh that pray Psalm 139 14 over her every single day and do everything you can do to help her see how valuable she is in Christ and in your eyes. So and so that she would know she she should be treated as valuable. >> Number one piece of advice to a new Christian. >> Uh it would be to study your Bible with other Christians. >> Number one piece of advice to someone that claims to have church hurt. >> Uh be specific and real about that. Like who at the church actually hurt you and don't give up on the bride of Christ because of uh incident that you had. >> Number one piece of advice you would give someone that's depressed. >> Mhm. Bring it to the Lord and seek get like good biblical counseling. >> Number one piece of advice to someone that is suicidal. >> Tell somebody. Say it out loud. Tell somebody. Shine light on that thing. >> Tell everybody and we will help you. All right. Now, you're going to finish the sentence. I will start it, you will finish it. Christians really need to stop >> sinning. >> [laughter] >> That's the easiest one in the world. All right. My number one wish for America is >> that we would come back to Christ. >> Every pastor just wants to hear someone else say >> God has used you to change my life. That's so much different than that was a good sermon. >> If I could delete one book from the collective memory of humanity, it would be >> uh everything Karl Marx wrote. >> The church in America needs to >> repent. >> Heaven is going to surprise us because >> it'll exceed anything you could ever imagine. >> Preachers should start being more bold about >> whatever the Bible says. >> The thing I'm most worried about in the future is Mhm. >> complacency. >> One question that every man should ask himself is >> Do I have what it takes? >> Every man listening to this right now should immediately >> Um seek the Lord and do whatever he tells you to do. >> That's the wrong answer. They need to immediately finish this episode, Joby. I mean, come on. And then they can get on to the next things. But let's let's the first things be first, okay? All right. Now let's get into a couple of random ones and then we're going to do something fun. Do you have any irrational fears? >> No. I'm not [clears throat] a very fearful person. Not that I can think of. >> there Is there like an animal you're scared of? A particular food? A medicine? >> say when um I don't love heights. Like I don't mind tree stands and stuff like that. It doesn't bother me at all if I'm like latched in. When I went skydiving, I was I've never been so scared. Like just straight like a I mean, just scared. Like what are you doing? This is the worst thing I've ever done. >> Do you have any hidden talents? >> Oh, no. I'm not very talented. >> Liar. Give me your hidden talents. Tell me. Tell everyone. I'll turn my mic off. Tell me. Come on. >> I don't know what my hidden talents are. I can I can >> country music? >> I can do a a mean karaoke, yeah. >> All right. Any guilty pleasures? >> Uh there's some protein ice cream now that Gretchen found and I eat a bucket every every night. >> Uh I'm going to need that as a side dish to my peanut butter chocolate pie. >> a perfect little combo. >> Telling you, man. So you're getting jacked while you're getting fat at the same time. Why not? All right. What is the last thing that made you cry? >> Uh, oh man. Last [clears throat] night in line after church praying for this young lady who's been struggling with infertility for the last 4 years. That one gets me, man. >> brutal. >> Cuz even like the desires of her heart are so good, you know? And I get it theologically, but I don't like I'm like, come on, Lord. I know you're good and perfect and all of that, but come on. This girl just wants to have a baby and raise it in church and make a little disciple, you know? So that one got my heart a little bit. >> Yeah, me too. Um, I remember being at men's [clears throat] conference, we got a little receiving line for like 40 dudes up front and there's a long guy one of and one guy came up to me and just told me his story about what was going on there and I I had to turn around and take a break. I had to like catch my breath. This is one of those things. What's the last thing you Googled? >> Last thing I Googled? >> Yeah. >> Um, uh Alexander Kuyper, is that his name? Alexander Kuyper's uh sovereign >> Abraham Kuyper. That's why I had to Google it cuz I couldn't remember his name. Uh >> All right. >> sovereign theology, sovereign sphere theology. >> Hey guys, real quick, I just wanted to remind you that we have an official Undaunted Life store. You can go to shop.undaunted.life or check it out in the show notes. Guys, we're always going to have hats and shirts and a bunch of other awesome stuff. Go there, support us, wear the mission. Who you got? >> Johnny Cash. >> On the other side, number two Waylon Jennings versus number three Willie Nelson. >> Uh, Waylon Jennings for my dad. >> Johnny Cash versus Waylon Jennings. >> Johnny Cash. >> Okay, now [clears throat] we're going to do superheroes.
