Joey Martin, I'm a little offended by you because uh I was you know, being vulnerable with you, right? Because that's what you preach, you know, if you're going to be a man, you got to be vulnerable at the right times and all that. And so, I sent you a picture of my surgically repaired arm in comparison [clears throat] to my wife's current arm. My wife's arm was a little bigger than my left arm right now, and you said, "Oh, I didn't realize the boys had two moms." >> That's not exactly what I said. >> You said something like that. You were like, "Happy Pride Month, Kyle. You're basically in a lesbian marriage." It was something like that. Maybe maybe not. But like, this is what I'm normally dealing with. >> Yeah, that's good. >> one. Look at the other one. >> as good. >> I'm And I'm flexing the left bicep right now. >> At least you're out of the bionic arm thing. >> Yeah, as of an hour ago. I mean, you guys are listening to this in the future, but yeah, as of an hour ago, I'm cleared from that. So, a long way to build back up, but we got business to attend to. And the first question's always from me. So, Joey, I know this would never happen in a million years because everyone everyone across the board is a huge fan of Church of 1122, huge fan of Joby Martin. No one ever questions your motives or your actions and nobody would ever Nobody would ever, Joby, go forward with an accusation without having like a baseline understanding of what they're even claiming. And nobody would ever, ever potentially storm a service, a Church of 1122 service, you know, with microphones and cameras to try to get, I don't know, let's just think of a scenario. Maybe they're trying to shoot a second season of a show where they try to make pastors and ministries look bad. They would never do that. But for the Church of 1122ers listening out there and for all the other pastors that have churches that are worried about having their churches stormed by nefarious actors regardless of their motivations, what is the Church of 1122's plan if y'all do have a service that gets interrupted? >> Uh we don't let anybody come into the service with things like video cameras and stuff and this is really based on part of the role [clears throat] of the elder in 1 Corinthians and the elders are responsible for orderly worship. It's the last thing we want to do is take any distraction away from why we gathered, which is to make much of Jesus in worship and word. Anybody can come and attend and again, as long as they're not a disruptor, anybody could come and attend, but um you [clears throat] know, we don't let anybody come in with with cameras and microphones and all that on a Sunday morning to especially with the intention to disrupt. And uh we take that very, very seriously. And so at our church, we have uh you know, we have a security team that we call Nehemiah that we would love to get to the heart of those folks really quickly and be able to pray for them because obviously something is going on in their heart and uh and then if it escalated beyond that, then we have the appropriate law enforcement, like Romans 13 instructs us to to do what they do. >> Well, I think for a lot of guys listening this, maybe your church doesn't have like a solidified security team of some kind. A lot of churches don't even have uh plainclothes or uniformed officers uh in their sanctuaries or anywhere around that. Obviously, I would I would think that that's something you should do, but for some churches the budget's not really there. So, for the lean forward guys that are listening to this, the guys that are comfortable with using their bodies and other tools in order to potentially push back darkness, you have to stand ready to do those things. But, for the church, it makes sense to make sure that there is some sort of some sort of protocol in place because someone may have some tactical experience and may be concealed carrying. They may not know how to handle themselves and may they may go off half-cocked and then, you know, it becomes an issue for the church. It becomes a liability for the other people that are attending, the other congregants. And so, as a church, it's good to kind of have some top-down control there. So, next question here, this is from Zach from the Forging Table. Do you think that listening to the Bible is just as powerful as reading it? For thousands of years, the only way people were able to consume the Bible was somebody was them reading it or somebody reading it to them. Now, we put so much emphasis on reading it's because we have it physically in front of us. Do you think there's a difference in how helpful it can impact us? And so, he's referring back in times whenever the Bible would be read out loud because not everyone was literate. Obviously, before the invention of Gutenberg's printing press, you know, we didn't even have the ubiquity of the printed word. But, now you have people that are like, "Oh, I don't have time to read the Bible." So, they're listening to it on their drive or at the gym. You know, it's not the same as studying. It's not the same as opening it. But, what are your thoughts on listening versus reading? >> Yeah, I would uh I would caution him from falling into the tyranny of the or. And if you are a Bible-believing Christian, you should be doing all of the above. Um part of the reason you should study it is uh you know, we tend to remember things that we read and see with our eyes longer than what we hear. Uh part of the benefit of hearing it is uh sometimes this happens to me like we're teaching through the book of Matthew right now. There's all these things I'm seeing because I've got to teach huge chunks of it in order to be able to get it all in in a year, you know? And I didn't even realize like this miracle is a response to this question that Jesus asked over there. And so sometimes you can lose a lot of the context if you're just doing a couple verses at a time. I also [clears throat] think it'd be important to read your Bible with a notebook next to it so you can take notes, you can journal, etc. So I would just try to incorporate all of those things. And too many times we let like what we're most comfortable with be the lead foot on how we study the Bible. I think it's very, very healthy discipline to lean into some of the things that you're least comfortable with. Um just to kind of exercise that part of your faith. So if you if it's easy as for you to listen, you should add some sit down with a Bible and a journal. And if you don't like to journal, which I hate journaling, you should do some of that just to exercise that that spiritual discipline. >> Well, I also think something that's important is arrive to the text with some level of expectancy, right? That God is that this is the living word of God that it is going to speak to you cuz I remember, you know, by the time people are listening to this you're going to hear an episode that I did on the podcast about the the movie and the book The Road. You're going to hear a daily blade full of those things. I was 5 minutes into rewatching the movie for the first time in 20 years or something like that. I don't even know if it's 20 years old, 15 years. And within the first 5 minutes I was like, "Oh, there's something here. There's there's automatically some heavenly father and some earthly father parallels here." And so I just took out my notes to my phone. Some people like voice memos and you know, doing that kind of thing. Go into the text and you're reading in the text with some some sort of expectancy. And also look at what we're modeling on the forging table right now as we dig through Romans. You know, we like to have fun. We like to, you know, play some games and you know, mess around with each other a little bit. But we're going to be digging into phrases within a single verse, right? And if you're not spending time in the text reading it over and over, listening to it, absorbing it somehow, you're You're out going to miss stuff. And the Holy Spirit's going to be revealing stuff to you anyway, but if you don't go to the text to reckon with what the text says, what do you expect the Holy Spirit to do? Right? Something whenever I'm doing coaching stuff, it's like this is a pen, not a, you know, magic wand. >> I agree. Uh it goes back to the parable of the sower. So, before Jesus began to teach in parables, he taught a parable on parables. And uh [clears throat] the way you read the Bible would be very applicable to that sermon, right? A sower sows the seed, and there's the condition of the soil, not the delivery of the seed, that makes the difference. And so, I'm all for like playing Bible, you know, listening to the Bible while you're driving in your car, but you got to admit that's a pretty distracted way to listen to it, especially if you're driving in traffic and that kind of thing. So, um and and and there's no way good soil is just randomly good. If you've ever planted a food plot or planted a garden or anything, then you've got to do some things to the soil so it is prepared for the seed to be able to do what it is supposed to do. And so, I would highly encourage, like when I was talking about you recently, I think it was on on the Daily Blade, and that incredible experience you had with your little boy on Easter Sunday singing How Great Thou Art, if you go back and listen to your testimony on that Sunday, you did a lot of work going into it. Like you and Kelsey talked about I think we're going to bring the boy in. You were listening to Phil Wickham on the way. Like there was a lot of tilling up of the soil of your heart, and it just hits different when we do our part. >> Yeah, it's different whenever you're preparing yourself to be entertained, depending on your church's style, whenever you're preparing yourself to learn, which again, if you go to a church that exposes the word, learning's going to happen, but also letting the Holy Spirit have some room to do some work. So, the next question is from anonymous. So, guys, you don't always have to give me your name if you give me a question, but I thought that this was a a spectacular question. One of the main struggle One of my main struggles is lust. So, in order to be more Christ-like, I avoid places where I may become tempted. So, I work [clears throat] out at home, so I'm not tempted to check out the women at the gym who are typically not leaving much to the imagination to begin with. I don't go to public pools or to the beach. I stay away from movies and shows with sex scenes. However, I attended church with a lot of beautiful women and men who have been and Sorry, let me read it exactly. I attended church with a lot of beautiful women and some women who have been augmented to be more beautiful than what's natural. If you know what I mean. So, as I look back on my week, the place where I find the most sexual temptation is the same place that I'm called to be a member of. How do I deal with this? >> Yeah, I mean, you know, the Bible does talk about modesty, but since you're asking about Not you, but since the question asker is asking about themselves, um I would try to You do your best to sit on the front row, to guard your eyes, all of those kind of things. But, the only things you've talked about there are just the uh mortification of the sin and not the vivification of your your walk with Jesus. And so, it's not enough to just just have your eyes dodge what you shouldn't look at. You've also got to fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. I- If you apply to a whole bunch of the things that we just talked about, then cuz there is a big difference, bro, between just noticing that a girl is very pretty. There's no sin in just having the human ability for you to see somebody and be like, "Tho- That's the kind of physique I am attracted to." Lust begins to happen when you begin to commodify that person. When you begin to treat them not as an image bearer of God that Christ died on the cross for, but you think, "How can I use that for my own gain?" And so, don't linger there for sure. But, the fact that you noticed that there are pretty people at your church, if it's sending you into a death spiral every time, it actually says it probably says more about your lack of depth in your own relationship with Jesus than it does about what he or what the girl is wearing. And so, I would pay very close attention to that. Pray more before you go to church. Read the scriptures more before you go to church. Make sure that that the glance doesn't turn into a stare that turns into a conversation, those kind of things. But, the the best way the best way uh to have a healthy garden is not just pull the weeds. You need to do that, but you've also got to feed the garden. And our relationship with the Lord is like that. Make sure you're feeding that relationship. >> Hey guys, real quick. You've probably heard the phrase ignorance is bliss, right? I heard a great story uh back in the day. Uh there was uh church where, you know, there's a raised stage where the the you know, worship band is playing or whatever, and one of the gals that was singing backup, or at least that's what they pretend when they have the microphone, even though it's probably turned off, she was wearing a very, very short skirt. And one of the pastor's wives noticed what this gal was wearing, and pulled her aside after she got off stage, and just had a modesty conversation because, you know, the girl probably looks good in the skirt. She probably felt good in the skirt. She probably liked it, picked it out, was like, "Oh, this is great." And then when she wore it to church, or if you're a gal that goes to church with a plunging neckline shirt or dress or something like that, for some of the older women to be able to, you know, speak [clears throat] into that and be like, "Look, the your brothers are in this church, right? Your your brothers in Christ are in this church. A lot of them have a sexual temptation, a lust temptation, and you're not doing them any favors." And also for the male elders of the church to be able to have that conversation in a healthy way as well, where the woman doesn't feel like castigated, where she doesn't end up feeling like sunshine that you've talked about a lot of times. But at the same time, it's like, "Look, if a guy's like super [clears throat] jacked and tan and all that, you wouldn't want him walking around in, you know, in a shirt that would be super revealing if there are women that have a lust issue." But obviously, as we understand just male biology, the man is more attracted to things through the eye as opposed to women. So, I think there's a role for that there as well. >> Yeah, and it takes a real secure woman to have that kind of conversation with a sort of gentleness, that gentle correction, you know? Because what happens a lot of times is there's a lot of jealousy, and the reason some of the women don't like when those girls wear that is cuz that woman can't pull it off, right? And so, you're absolutely right. We've had those conversations, and one of the things, you might think I'm funny, but you know, you've been to 11:22, it's freezing cold in our worship center. It's cuz we live at the beach, man. And it's just like the movies, everybody knows if you come to 11:22, it's going to be cold, you should probably wear a hoodie. And a part of it is is just so people are prepared, and I mean, you know, nobody gets cold at the movies cuz they wear a jacket, and people just know we're going to dress We're going to put on some extra clothes when we come to 11:22. And I don't I'm not trying to be a legalist about it, man. You're really trying to thread that needle of encouraging those girls that have it have it checked the modesty sanctification box yet, also understanding changing cultures. And honestly, the beach culture's different than other cultures. Um but but still, the truth of the Bible is is will always be true, and that that modesty is something that both men and Christian women need to pursue. >> All right. Next question. This one's for me. So, why do so many Christians seem to want to cling to this life when we're supposed to be so excited about eternal life and the eternal life that we have to look forward to? You have so many Christians uh that are trying to extend their life. They're they're literally scared to death of death. Um you know, whether they're they're sick now or could become sick later, one of those things. It's It's almost like to a non I'm think trying to think as a non-believer. It's like, "Wait a minute. Don't y'all get eternal life with streets of gold and, you know, waterfalls of honey and all these you great fat babies flying around, you know, playing harps and all that? Doesn't that sound awesome? Why are you trying to cling to this mortal coil?" >> Yeah, I do think uh part of it is we don't spend enough time talking about heaven and yearning for and longing for heaven. Um I do think there's just kind of the normal human experience of the fear of the unknown. And though I am assured of my salvation, um it's not being dead that I'm afraid of. It's the getting dead part, you know? And I just had a long conversation with with Pastor Britt here on our staff and we we were just kind of talking about future hopes and goals and all that kind of stuff. And I want to be around for a long time, but most of it has to do with just I want to play with grandbabies and pour into not just my kids, but multiple generations and those sorts of things. And so, um I agree with you, but one of the things I will say is man, I I had the opportunity to be a part of Bob Tebow's funeral couple weeks ago, Tim Tebow's dad. And uh man, anytime I get around a an older saint that can I mean, they know that they are single-digit months away probably from going to be with the Lord, you see this this yearning just to be with him, especially as their bodies are fading man. And it is um so that guy's discipled me uh years in the questions that he would ask and really with his life taking the gospel, especially to the Philippines. But, without knowing it, he's also he's also discipled me in showing me how a godly man passes away with a yearning for eternity. It's pretty incredible. >> [snorts] >> All right, next question here. This is from Winkler, Jake Winkler at the largest ball fortune tables. When God blesses people in the Old Testament, was that a form of the prosperity gospel? Did their faith equal material abundance? >> Um >> [clears throat] >> well, no. I mean Sometimes it manifests itself that way, but the blessing is you you have a covenant with him. And that's where people have to be rooted first and foremost. He was also forming a people. And I mean, the reality is is if you follow after Jesus in America right now, your life probably will get better. I say this all the time. It's just a preaching thing. You know, we don't follow Jesus cuz he makes life better. We follow him because he is better than life. However, when you align yourself with the way the creator created us to live, when we live in God's world God's way, things tend to go better. Like if you're at work and you don't lie and you don't cheat and you're not sleeping with other people in your office and you work hard as unto the Lord, well, blessings flow from that and it's not just some kind of supernatural like blessing dust God sprinkles on you. It's more like you're you're living in alignment with the way God created us to live in his world and there's blessing. The real key it really just comes down to your heart, man. It comes down to what are you chasing? I'm blessed like crazy, man. I mean, I've got a wife that loves me and two healthy kids that are walking with the Lord. And and I have enough money to pay all my bills and still sponsor compassion kids and help other people out. So, I have more than enough. But, if I was chasing that stuff, that's where the idolatry comes, and though you could be materially blessed, you will be cursed. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And so, there is a hint of what Well, where the prosperity gospel guys get it wrong is this. Is that the Bible fundamen- fundamentally from beginning to end teaches that Christ is preeminent. The heresy of the prosperity gospel is not that God doesn't want to prosper you. He does. It's just not with containing Cadillacs. And the true heresy in the prosperity gospel is that I am preeminent. And if I sowed this seed in, then I've tricked like I've I painted God into a corner, and now he owes me 60, 90, or 100-fold. And so, he is responding to me. The gospel is the exact opposite. The gospel is, "No, no, no. He goes first. He loves first, and I respond to him." And he is more than enough. >> Well, yeah, certainly. I do want to go back something that you said. Wait, are you telling me that you individually sponsor Compassion kids? Cuz I Wait, I thought that the church as a whole did that, and then you just hid it in the budget somewhere. Wait a minute. This is breaking news. >> Yeah, my own family right now sponsors nine Compassion kids. So, we write a check or whatever, you know, it comes out of our account. It goes directly to Compassion and not through the Church of 1122. And as we're recording this on a Thursday, this is Compassion weekend for us. So, we're praying that another four or five thousand kids will get sponsored. And then, all of those people that sponsor kids, it'll put us well over 30,000 um as a church. And yeah, so it's direct to Compassion International. It does not flow through the church. >> That's so weird. I am flabbergasted and flummoxed. I thought everything I heard on the internet was true. All right, let's go to a donor. Justin, thank you so much for being a donor. Do you think God will one day reveal to us the could-have-been outcomes if we had acted on the prompting of the Holy Spirit? For example, you don't take the opportunity to share the gospel with a stranger next to you on the plane, so God uses someone else to reach that person, so on and so forth. >> Only if it's in a way that glorifies God. You know, I I mean, I do have this sense. I don't have a Bible verse for it. But, you know, there's a lot of us that are kind of hoping and praying when we get there. I mean, there you know, 1 Corinthians hints at it like now we see through a glass dimly, then we will see clearly, then we will know fully. And there's a lot of us that have talked about the real reward in heaven would be to get there and look over your shoulder and see family members and friends and even generations of people that were there and how God used you. So, only in such a way that that God would be glorified. I don't think that what God's going to do is Well, I know we're not going to get up there and be condemned for the wrongdoing and the missteps. But, I do think that we are going to see the fullness of Romans 8:28 of how he worked in all situations for the good of those that love him and called according to his purpose. >> I think it would be I I I I can't remember the verse, but it's somewhere in the Bible where it talked about how hey, there's going to be like this fear thing in heaven kind of like what they have in Vegas and you can go in there like, you know, cosmic DVR and you can be like hey, I zigged on this decision. What would have happened if I zagged? I think that's going to be one of the benefits. I think it was in Ezekiel somewhere. Can you remember the Can you remember the passage? >> Yeah, maybe like second opinions. I think is what you're looking for. >> Uh yeah, it's it's either first or second. All right, we're going to end with a scenario here because you know, I never like to catch you flat-footed at the end of a podcast. So, we're going to run you through some scenarios uh in some of these future podcasts. So, here's a scenario for you. There's a lifeboat and the lifeboat can only hold 10 people. >> Okay. >> There are currently 11 people aboard and if nobody is removed, the boat will eventually sink and everyone will die before help arrives. >> Okay. >> Do you throw someone overboard and if so, how do we choose which one goes? >> I go. Can I be the one that goes overboard? >> Uh this is It's my scenario, it's your answer. >> Yeah, yeah, I would go. I would volunteer me. >> Well, that's a pretty good answer. I don't even have a joke to follow up with that, which now you caught me flat-footed cuz normally I get to do some sort of an outro joke. >> Uh >> You got one? >> a dad joke for you. >> Bro, we have been Okay, guys, wait. Time pause. Hold up. Wait a minute, guys. I have been hinting to Joby. All right, you keep thinking. You got to make sure it cuz the delivery's got to be perfect, okay? Cuz I've been hoping for a dad joke. >> go. I got to tell you a little bit of context, man. I'm Grayson and I are riding around in the car somewhere and she listens to all these dudes. She she loves all your shows. She's part of the the Beastly 5%ers out there. Is that what it is? Yeah, yeah, man. And so she's like, "You need some dad jokes." And so she just started reading me a bunch in the car. This is the only one I can remember. So my dear friend Tony comes up to me. My man Tony. Known him forever. And Tony says to me, "Whatever you do, don't say my name backwards." And I said, "Why not?" >> [sighs] >> Uh all right, you know what? We'll take it. We'll accept it. It is officially It is officially a dad joke. Well, Joby, I appreciate the time every time. And hey, now we can do Ask a Pastor. I can put you in these scenarios. I can ask you all these questions. And then we'll just see how my arm grows over time. But I'm thinking about retiring from violence and from working out at all. I think I'm just going to stay here with this, you know, flabby deflated arm with all these tattoos. What do you think? Look at this thing. >> I think that's a terrible idea. The good news is, trust me on this one, muscle memory is real. You will gain it back so much faster than it took you to build it to begin with. So you might just have to do some like old school Arnold workouts like I do. Like a lot of curls and bench press and stuff like that. >> Yeah, we're going to take it back to the '80s. Let's ignore the legs, fellows. Just let's get those triceps and biceps popping. Let's just go. You know that's how it is. I walk around your Globo Gym. Ain't nobody squatting. >> Oh, everybody's squatting in there, man. >> Yeah, we'll see. >> thigh fest in there. >> Oh, hey, before we leave since we just have a few minutes cuz we we sped up, you did something you don't normally do. I wasn't planning on asking you about this, but uh it was this week uh that we're recording this, you did a selfie video from from the truck, and I was like, all right, this ain't normal, so I thought somebody died or something got set on fire, but you had a tremendous story uh from your gym, so give it to us. >> Spirit of God made me do it, man. I never do those sit in the truck and tell her about what I think about stuff. And so, but I felt like the Lord told me to do it, and kind of to your previous question, I want to be obedient anytime I sense the spirit of God's telling me to do something. I've been training at this gym next door uh for 20-plus years because when I moved here in '03, it's cuz Dexter Jackson worked out there. He was Mr. Olympia in '08. He's been one of my one mores forever. I've known him forever. And when he walks in the gym, he's the goat. He's got more first-place wins in professional bodybuilding than anybody ever, all right? Well, he was awarded the uh Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award. This would be like the highest honor you could get in the bodybuilding world. And so, he gets up to receive the award and he starts talking about Jesus and about his faith in Christ, and I was like, dude, that's cool. But then what made it better is the following weekend, he's got his phone out and he's recording worship at his church. He didn't go to this church. He goes to Celebration Church, and my friend Pastor Tim Timberlake is the pastor there. So, when I saw that, the next day when I saw Dexter in the gym, I was just encouraging. I was like, bro, way to go. You have no idea the influence you have because you're you. I mean, everybody here wants your attention, and so I was just encouraging him. And and he kind of knew the pastor a little bit, and so I I called Tim Timberlake, and I was like, Pastor Tim, Dexter Jackson's at your church. The Lord is all over him. You need to get on it. And he was like, I'm on it right now. Maybe a month later, I'm just kind of scrolling social, and And Dexter Jackson in the tub getting baptized, declaring Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior. >> And so to bring it full circle, I'm in the gym this week and Dexter comes walking up, which is totally normal to say hey, especially the past few weeks. We're talking about the Bible and sermons and all this stuff. And he brings this young lady. I don't know. She's 25, 30, 35. It all looks the same to me. She says, "Pastor, this girl needs to get baptized. You can take it from here." And just walks away. >> [laughter] >> And I thought, "Bro, here's a guy I prayed for for 20 years." And a part of what I said on that little video and I'm just thankful that I'm on team Jesus. It ain't team Kyle. It ain't team Joby. It's not 11:22. It's not Celebration Church. It's not about Tim Timberlake. [clears throat] It's not even about Dexter Jackson. It's all about team Jesus. And I just wanted to I wanted everybody to hear and see how God used my prayers, Timberlake's preaching, Dexter sharing his faith in the gym, and we're all just on the same team. And especially with all of the hate out there from Christians, just I mean dividing over the dumbest things. I thought it'd be a good idea for people to see what it looks like when churches and brothers and sisters just stack hands and all are on team Jesus. >> Amen. No better way to end this.
