Joby has said about the Lord and how he saw God's lavish love through his dad, even though he wasn't

saved until later in life. My father claimed not only salvation, but ministry for his entire life,

40 plus years. He is a narcissist, a predator, and a liar that manipulated, conditioned,

and abused our entire family and others the entire time. This has caused damage in all of our

relationships with the Lord ourselves and others. And now that he blew up his ministry and the whole

truth has come out, most of us have seen or are seeing counselors to deal with the effects of his

actions. So Joby, there's three questions here. I'm just going to kind of ask them all together,

not assuming you're going to be able to remember all of them, but I think it kind of gloms onto a

similar answer. So if you'll follow me with that first question, can a narcissist really have

salvation since everything in their life revolves around themselves? Second question, what are some

go to scriptures you like that help fight these false views that God is anything other than a

good father, right? Because his father was a heavy handed disciplinarian, just waiting to crush people

for failure, right? And third question is this, I don't throw in a lot at you, but what are some

practical ways I can show this type of love to my son. He's only five years old. So generational

sin patterns can be broken. First and foremost, I think the first time I ever heard somebody say

this was Louis Giglio said that God is not a reflection of your earthly father. He is the

perfection of what it means to be father. So whether your dad was a good dad or a horrible dad,

that impacts who God, the father is zero impacts your experience with a relationship with the father.

But the good news is, is you have a perfect heavenly father that wants to perfectly love you. And so

Luke 15 would be a place that I go over and over and over again. Honestly, if you just go to like

Jesus calls God father. And I mean, first of all, man, I hate it for you. It's a it's an attack

of the enemy to take one of the primary relationships that we are to have, which is with our dads. And

then the enemy gets in there and corrupts things. And so I hate it for you, but that's why Jesus

came to die for sinners like me and you and your dad. And so can you be a narcissist and be a

Christian? Absolutely. Because when Christ died on the cross for our sin, that was any and all sin

past, present and future. And so it is very selfish to be self absorbed, but it is not an

unforgivable sin for anybody that would surrender their life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

And then a part of, I mean, John Eldridge talks a lot about this and both you and I are pretty

big fans of that guy. You know, we make, we're all scarred up by our dads and we, we make promises.

And so just be the kind of dad to your boys that you always dream that your dad would be to you.

And just know, here's a hard thing to understand is no matter how purehearted you are and no matter

how hard you try to love your kids, you're going to, you are a deformed image of God also. And some

of that is going to be reflected. And so, you know, one of the things that I try to do in leading

my family is to be the lead apologizer and the lead repentor. You know, and so when I screw up,

I try to be the first one to say, Hey, that was on me. Because I want my both of my children to see

that in me. Yeah, I would say that's true. Also, I mean, this literally happened last night. So,

James and Elijah, they both brush her teeth at the same time. They're right there. They're always

screwing around. They're having a good time. But again, it's like, all right, let's brush our teeth.

We got to get on with this. And James decides he wants to rip the toothbrush out of his mouth and

just sprayed the mirror with toothpaste and spit nonsense. And I grabbed him and I disciplined him

in that moment. I told him to go and get his PJs on and all that. And of course, he's crying. He's

five years old. He can't control his emotions. Well, I was putting Eli to bed and mom was in

there with James and they lay down in bed and they kind of talk about their day and then I'll come

in there and lay down and talk to him about his day. Well, she's telling him dad hates me, dad thinks

I'm the worst kid ever like those those types of things. Now, the the level of punishment I gave

him was appropriate. It wasn't like out of this world angry. But as a child, he just couldn't see

himself as being loved by his father until I came into the room five minutes later and I came and

gave him a big hug and oh my gosh, he just he grabbed me and hugged me as hard as he could

because he's like, Oh, my dad does love me. And my dad does accept me. And so that's kind of the

line where you have to be a disciplinarian because they're a child. They're basically a chimp that you

have to, you know, kind of guide them and nurture them and then, you know, raise them in the nurture

and admonition of the Lord. At the same time, you have to show them the same level, if not more so

of love so that they know that you're not just disciplining them because you want them to be a

good rule follower. You know what I mean? Yeah, 100% and same thing. Even even this week,

it's funny. JP and I went with my dad, his granddad on a fish and ship to Canada. I had one of the

best weeks ever. I saw the best version of my son I've ever seen, which is pretty cool. It's with a

bunch of grown men and he's 19 and outfished everybody and out hustled everybody and outworked

everybody and participated in all the conversations. And it was cool. I was like, dude, I'm so proud

of you. And he just says to me, thanks for raising me to be a man. There's no greater compliment.

There was 100 times when he was in middle school in high school that we were just bump heads like

crazy. And then even yesterday when we got home, I had to fuss at him for not doing something.

And then, you know, it's also nice because Gretchen's there and she's like, Hey, let me tell you what

was going on in his life right now that he was a little down. And so just giving you a heads up.

And so in that, even though technically I was right and what I was fussing at him about,

I didn't know the context of his day and just shot him at text and was like, Hey, dude, when

you get home, let's chat. Heard you're having kind of a tough day. I'm sorry about that. I love you.

You know, as opposed to like jockeying to be like, well, I am right because these things are true.

Um, and especially if you do this thing right, then your 19, 20 year old son will still want to

hang out with you and go on fishing trips with you. And you, you enter into a totally different

version of your relationship. And so a big part of parenting is your parenting towards

emancipation for your kid where they willfully choose to have a relationship with you.

Which that's the ultimate goal. I mean, we've talked about this. I forget who said it first,

but they're like, you know, you work so hard and you're away from your family, their entire

childhood. So you can have that lake house and that nice boat and that whatever. And there you are,

you got adult children, you got grandchildren, you're sitting on the dock by yourself because

nobody wants to come over and ride on the boat with you. And I just, I remember the thing you

talked about whenever you pulled up at the retreat center and JP had parked his car right in the

middle of everywhere. And he just got home from college. And here you go laying into him. It

wasn't, Hey, son, how you doing? Hey, great to see you. It was, what are you doing park in there?

And he was literally picking flowers for Gretchen, for your bride, for his mama. And you know, he,

he kind of told you, told you off a little bit like that. And you to your credit, you immediately go,

Oh my gosh, I'm a colossal idiot. And you know, you're like, Hey, let's reset, let's, let's redo it.

But yeah, that's the thing that I would even tell the mamas listening out there. You might be a

mama of that, you know, maybe you're, you're married to a guy that's kind of sawed off like

Joby or like myself. And you're thinking, gosh, I would, I'm tired of the apologies. I'm tired of

the asking for forgiveness. I just want him to be different. Ladies, I'm telling you a lot of these

lot more roadway in front of them. So give them grace, ladies, like we're all not just works in

Well, one, I would give you a verse to memorize if you're a parent, especially of Loodles, man,

Philippians one six, I'm confident of this that he who began a good work in them will bring it to

completion on the day of Christ Jesus. So I would hesitate to do a full scale evaluation of how

you're doing as a parent when your kids seven, giving that's right. That's right. All right,

like overcoming difficulties to accomplish something great? Will there be tasks to do for God that

will cause us to push ourselves to new limits? Or is everything going to be easy and successful

overcoming the odds with grit? Will that be lost in the perfection of heaven?

Yes, there will be tasks because what we know now, just burn up basically, John sees a new

heaven and a new earth that includes like cities and places. And I do think that we go back to some

of the original cultural mandate to subdue and cultivate, but without the corruption of sin,

thorns, thistles, those kinds of things. So work was given to us before the fall,

and it was a part of God's original intent. And so I think it's I think the new heavens and earth

are going to be a lot more like what we experience here, except minus sin and any of its corruption.

of that church, then I don't understand then what you should do is just pray for that church.

And you should fill the gap with trust and you should assume the best thing about that church.

And maybe they run on a really, really tight budget and the volunteer situation is, you know,

they worked their volunteers really, really hard and it was a gift to their volunteers

to be able to have one week where they could do church in a different way. So I would just be

very careful externally about judging the motives behind why any church does what they do.

And the further, you know, when you, you don't have a lot of information, it's really,

it's really easy to think you're an expert and what other churches should and shouldn't do.

There are times when, like, we have a Thursday night, 722 service and we do not have a service

on Thanksgiving Day. So what's the difference? You know, so I would just, and a part of that is just,

you know, when it's also nice for our staff to be able to eat Thanksgiving dinner with their

family. So I'd be really careful about judging the motives behind why a church did that.

apostle Paul and all that. Well, we'll send you to those places. We'll send you to the theater

where God shows you all the times he saved your life when you thought he was just being mean to you.
