This is on Daunted Life, a man's podcast.
0:50
I'm your host Kyle Thompson.
0:52
Let's get into it.
0:53
And today we've got part two of our interview with the great and wonderful Taya Kyle.
0:57
So guys, if you have not listened to the last episode, you want to make sure that you go
1:01
and do that because in this episode, we expand on a lot of the things that we talked about
1:06
in the last episode.
1:08
She kind of has more time to get into some detail.
1:11
She even told some stories that she's never told before, which was incredible for me sitting
1:14
here.
1:15
I mean, she kept almost like asking me permission like, hey, do you mind if I talk about this
1:18
a little bit more?
1:19
Do you mind if I go a little bit further in detail and I'm sitting here in my studio like,
1:22
yes, yes, like talk as much as you want.
1:24
Say all the stories that you need to say.
1:26
It was such an interesting conversation.
1:28
For those of you who don't know who Taya Kyle is, maybe you missed the last episode.
1:31
She's an author and a speaker and she is also the widow of Chris Kyle and you should know
1:35
that name because he is the most prolific sniper in United States military history.
1:39
He is the subject matter of the American Sniper movie and he wrote the book, American Sniper.
1:43
Taya runs the Chris Kai or the Taya and Chris Kyle Foundation.
1:47
She has two books that have been released and they've done really well.
1:51
He's released a men's and women's jewelry line, which we talked about on this episode.
1:54
But guys, I just got to tell you, if you thought some of the interesting points of last episode
1:59
were important and noteworthy with this episode, I think it goes much, much deeper because
2:06
obviously we spend more time.
2:07
You can see how long this interview goes in comparison to last week's episode.
2:11
But I was just astonished at the amount of depth that we were able to get on some of
2:15
these answers and guys, I'm struck again by the answers that you would expect to get
2:21
from a gold star wife, from a widow of a, you know, celebrated military hero and just
2:27
to hear her honesty and her realness and her rawness in her answers.
2:32
These have been two of my favorite episodes that I've done because I felt like she wasn't
2:37
trying to put a message out there for anybody in the way I mean that is like, she wasn't
2:43
trying to put up a front like, oh, you know, people are around, so I guess I'll act this
2:46
way.
2:47
I'll say this thing.
2:48
No, she was real.
2:49
She was raw.
2:50
And when you do interview, sometimes, sometimes you can sense that the person's holding back
2:53
a little bit and sometimes they have to.
2:55
You can't exactly say exactly what you want to say in all situations.
2:59
You don't exactly know the host.
3:00
You don't exactly know the audience.
3:01
So you just go with things that are safe.
3:03
I didn't feel like Taya really did that.
3:05
And I appreciated that to an extreme degree.
3:08
So without further ado, let's get into it.
3:12
Taya Kyle, welcome back to Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
3:16
Thank you for having me.
3:17
I am so excited about this year, the first person to do a two part interview and for
3:21
good reason because we did our first interview and it was obvious that there was more that
3:25
needed to be said and I'm sure our audience would really appreciate it.
3:28
So we appreciate you making some more time for us.
3:30
Oh, of course.
3:31
It kind of makes me smile and laugh anyway because there was a time when Chris was with
3:35
one of our dear friends, Bill Waburn, who's a sheriff out in Tarrant County and he answered
3:39
the phone and he said, yes.
3:41
Okay.
3:42
Love you by kind of thing, right?
3:44
But it took a while.
3:45
And so when he hung up the phone, he said to our friend, Bill, he said, my wife, she's
3:49
got a lot of words.
3:51
So you've experienced that first hand, though.
3:54
I have experienced it, but this is a good thing because we like words because this is
3:57
a podcast.
3:58
We need words.
3:59
Otherwise, it's just dead air and none of us get to have fun.
4:02
But if we go back to our first conversation, we kind of had to just rush past it because
4:07
we needed to talk about some other things, but you did make mention of how things obviously
4:13
got harder after Chris passed and it wasn't just because Chris passed.
4:18
You didn't really have a lot of time to mourn your husband and you had to be a mom and you
4:24
had to kind of help with business.
4:26
There was a lot of things that you had to deal with, but then there was everything else.
4:29
There was a lawsuit from a former pro wrestler.
4:32
There was people questioning Chris's stories and questioning his record and all these different
4:39
things.
4:40
So I just wanted to kind of give you a little bit of latitude here to kind of describe what
4:44
the weeks and years, even after Chris passed, what was that like for you and how were you
4:49
able to kind of work your way through that and feel free to get as detailed as you want.
4:53
Okay.
4:54
Yeah.
4:55
You know, it's an interesting thing to look back on it now.
4:56
It almost feels like a different life in some ways, but not.
5:01
So I think it's like a lot of things you look back on.
5:03
I still have the emotion that I can pull up.
5:06
And when I look at the details of it, I think, wow, I have my heart breaks for that woman,
5:14
me, right?
5:15
But when I look back, I go, whoa, right?
5:17
Like I feel bad for that version of myself that like I think we could all do that, the
5:22
younger version of ourselves.
5:24
And, you know, for me, it was, I had some friends who smoked cigarettes, right?
5:31
And so I, and I had done it before, but there was something that, when I look back, I see
5:37
myself chain smoking in the backyard hiding from the kids.
5:42
And as I went through grief and a couple of years of it didn't make me feel good.
5:47
I didn't like it, but I realized that my throat and my chest kind of close up as a response
5:53
to massive stress.
5:56
And so for me, it was a way of like just forcing myself to, you know, breathe in, breathe out
6:01
kind of thing.
6:02
And I didn't realize that at the time, but I also think it was a distraction from whatever
6:08
I was doing.
6:09
It forced me to go outside.
6:10
And it was something I do with my hands and, you know, just just a lot of things and so
6:16
low on sleep.
6:17
So I'm sure the nicotine, you know, helped me stay awake.
6:21
There was just all of that stuff, but that's not my personality on a normal time.
6:26
I, you know, some people have that personality where if they eat, they're going to eat a
6:29
ton.
6:30
If they drink, they're going to drink a ton.
6:31
You know, it's just not usually me.
6:33
So for me, that was noteworthy.
6:36
And there, and the other thing was just crying, not trying to cry, crying, not trying not
6:42
to cry actually.
6:43
But the tears would come, of course, every day at certain points while I was in the middle
6:47
of other things running around or I would pause for a second, but it was without me letting
6:52
it happen.
6:53
And the times when I would think, okay, I have a minute here.
6:57
I could just let them come.
6:59
I wouldn't because I would start to, like I could feel myself starting to throw up.
7:04
And so it was, the pain was almost so intense that I was going to throw up.
7:09
And so I got some anti-nausea medication from a friend of mine because I would start dry
7:13
heaving and stuff like that.
7:16
So there were those things because, as you said, it was grief and it was my kid's grief.
7:22
There were business issues with my husband's business that were not right.
7:28
He was upset about it.
7:29
He found out a couple of weeks before he died.
7:32
He was [inaudible].
7:33
And so I was trying to fight that battle.
7:35
You're right.
7:36
The former wrestler had a lawsuit against my husband.
7:39
He kept it going against the kids and me.
7:42
Those things were immediate and pressing.
7:44
The rough draft to the movie was turned in the day before he was killed.
7:48
And they wanted to ramp up the timing on that and make sure to get it right.
7:52
So there were just tons of hours working with the screenwriter.
7:56
A lot of times, you know, 11 and 12 at night, he was on the west coast and his wife, bless
8:01
her heart, was very sweet to let us do that.
8:03
So I spent the time working with the screenwriter.
8:08
And then we had, Chris was working on another book called American Gun and I wanted to finish
8:15
that for him.
8:17
And then we had the memorial edition of American Sniper that year as well.
8:22
So trying to do all of those things while in shock, you know, some of it, I suppose the
8:29
adrenaline was helpful, that adrenaline can come from shock.
8:35
The kids being my first priority meant a lot of the work was done in spurts and at night
8:43
after they went to sleep, but, you know, they didn't want to sleep alone either.
8:48
And so I would lay down with them in our bed and wait until they fell asleep and then
8:53
I would oftentimes get up and go back to work.
9:00
But when they would wake up and find me not there, they would come in and they'd be sad.
9:03
You know, mama, you left and I'm sorry, you know, I just had to do this or that.
9:08
So when I would get back in bed and fall asleep, both of them were traumatized because they
9:12
were very close to their dad and they would have fitful dreams and sleep.
9:17
And so they would basically be sort of their limbs would be flailing and I got punched almost
9:25
every night in the face, in the chest, you know, while they're in their sleep, not a
9:29
full on punch, right?
9:30
But their their arm is coming over and it lands on you with some force as they're kind
9:35
of adjusting and, you know, it just, it was just so much at once.
9:42
And the kindness of people, there were letters pouring in and, you know, flowers and notes.
9:49
And so I asked somebody to help me.
9:53
We made some cards that would say what I thought and felt with a picture of the family and
9:59
a thank you.
10:00
And then somebody else would address envelopes and get back because I was so at the same
10:05
time, just grateful for all of that love and thoughtfulness that went into that.
10:11
And I didn't want to not respond, but there was no way, as I told you, with everything
10:14
else that that I could.
10:17
And one of the business lawsuit, we had taken out a loan much like you would a mortgage
10:22
from one of those guys.
10:24
And so that ended up being a little bit of a pawn in the chess game of the lawsuit.
10:31
And there were things that were not right about it.
10:35
I mean, just in addition to the business going not right, there was a lot of, there were
10:43
a lot of shenanigans for us, you know, for lack of a better word and the house was a little
10:48
bit of that.
10:49
And so with all of that and not knowing how it all would go, spending a lot of money
10:55
on lawyers, the book was still selling, but we wanted to start a foundation with the money
11:01
from the book.
11:04
So I was starting that and fighting these other battles and thinking I might not be
11:08
able to stay in my house and wondering how we would make it.
11:12
And so I had, you know, bills and money and things sort of like piling up because I just,
11:20
the details were the harder part to take care of.
11:23
So I would have friends come in and just stop by and think, what can I do for a little
11:26
bit?
11:27
And I would say, here's my credit card, pay for this, you know, could you do this, that
11:31
one of the people who I didn't know very well, long story short, but you're a target.
11:36
When you're that raw, you are a target for sociopaths, for con men, right, for people
11:45
to really take advantage of you.
11:46
And that wasn't a situation I had been in before that I know of.
11:51
So somebody took advantage of that and, you know, we ended up pressing charges.
11:58
And then there were these, let's just, without knowing how much I can or shouldn't say, right,
12:07
but there were things that were, they would make movies out of.
12:13
If I would, you know, I kept going, this cannot be real life where people are that crooked
12:18
and that motivated to not be seen that way because all of a sudden Chris is beloved.
12:27
So their motivation to cover it up is heightened because now they wouldn't just be doing something
12:33
wrong to somebody in the community or a guy who died.
12:37
Now it would be like career ending for them, right?
12:41
So I think the level of those things, along with the love and support and kindness of
12:47
people, it was, it was like everything was just on high volume.
12:52
And yeah, my son had a way of dealing with it more like mine, he would just play all
13:00
the time and it was video games of nobody was there, but it was, can I have friends
13:04
over?
13:05
Can I do this?
13:06
Can I do that?
13:07
And my daughter got pretty sick and she was letting herself feel.
13:13
So that was an interesting dynamic because she also at that young age, and we didn't
13:17
figure this out until years later, but there was something in her that she was protecting
13:22
my son who's a little bit older.
13:24
He's a year and a half older and they've always been super tight.
13:28
So she felt protective of him because she could see he wasn't dealing with it.
13:32
And he felt protective of me in the way that one is when I cry, it hurts, it hurts, like
13:41
he feels pain.
13:43
And so he also didn't want to cry in front of me as much because he didn't want to cause
13:49
me pain and he's, you know, nine, eight and a half.
13:55
So we had these like really deep moving, just heart wrenching gut wrenching conversations
14:01
of, you know, it's okay to cry in these times because we raised our kids to be tough too,
14:06
right?
14:07
And so it was one of those things where if this happened to you, your dad would be crying
14:12
too.
14:13
Like sometimes we have to cry and it just, it was just a mess.
14:18
You know, but like I said, there were so many beautiful or not, but and they both exist.
14:24
It was a mess and it was beautiful and it was just so much to try to make a sense of it.
14:32
It was just survival, I guess, in a lot of ways.
14:35
Well, and the word that keeps coming to mind for me, Taya is resilience and we'll get more
14:39
into kind of why that word's important to you a little bit later in this interview.
14:43
But that's what we talk about all the time on this podcast is cultivating spiritual, mental
14:47
and physical resilience.
14:49
And sometimes you can do that on your own.
14:51
You know, you could take the easy trail or you could go on the hard trail.
14:53
That's a way that you can do it.
14:54
And other times, you know, life just hands you something or evil or Satan hands you something.
15:00
And it's like, okay, it's either survivor don't.
15:03
And I guess the question I have, and I think I may have even mentioned this on the last
15:07
episode, you talked about Chris's murder, you talked about, you know, kind of your feelings
15:14
towards him, but then you also spoke a little bit about how the initial idea was that he
15:19
was just a troubled vet with PTSD, almost like he couldn't help himself to do something
15:24
so evil.
15:25
But whenever, but that's not really the way that ended up.
15:29
You know, you mentioned that that wasn't really who this guy was.
15:32
He had some some other issues.
15:35
But did that make it harder to deal with?
15:38
Because this was a guy who didn't really have a crutch to lean on.
15:42
And I'm not saying PTSD is a crutch because it is a real issue that people deal with.
15:46
But for this guy in particular, did that make this whole process more difficult?
15:50
Because every time you learn something about Eddie, you know, it got worse.
15:55
You know, it's interesting because so much of my learning process with Chris and the
16:02
military and just growing up in the world that we live in, you know, I thought, man,
16:07
people really, there really is evil and people really will fall to it and part of the evil
16:13
that I saw to your point was just the brokenness of people and how susceptible they are to
16:24
creating narratives that are what they want versus what's the truth.
16:32
And that still continues to amaze me because I, you know, one of my friends was like, hey,
16:37
you're just a sort of a born truth seeker.
16:40
And when she said that, I thought, well, isn't everybody and she was a counselor.
16:43
And she said, no, right?
16:46
Most people are not.
16:48
And I look at that and I think, okay, so this family, we learned in the murder trial that,
16:56
you know, they would smoke weed together on their back porch from the time this kid was
16:59
in high school.
17:01
And I don't think the dad would necessarily think the mom did.
17:03
I found out later that, you know, from what I understand, he had some issues in school.
17:08
He goes into the military and then he's, he was an armor in the military.
17:14
He would hand out the guns, but he was never in a combat situation.
17:18
He was on a ship once.
17:20
I think where he got off one time to get a payroll, but other than that, something like
17:24
that was what my understanding was he'd never, the psychiatrist on the prosecution and defense
17:31
said he'd never had a traumatic event in his life inside or outside the military.
17:37
So I look at that and then when we were, so, so for me, I knew a lot of these things way
17:44
before the trial.
17:46
So when people would say, oh, it's PTS, I wanted to scream it from them from the rooftops.
17:50
No, it's not, right?
17:52
This guy, I mean, he shot them both in a really gruesome awful, I mean, it had to have been
18:00
a little bit planned out, if not well planned out in advance because it was simultaneous
18:06
or so close together, you know, multiple times on both.
18:10
That means you had to have two guns at the ready.
18:13
Chris had just finished shooting an old West pistol.
18:17
It wasn't like a fancy gun.
18:19
It was a replica.
18:21
Very relaxed.
18:22
Both guys had their safeties on, their pistols, nobody would have seen it coming, right?
18:26
And nor any anger or any instigation or anything like that and that, you know, that we know
18:34
of.
18:35
And so we look at that and we think, okay, there's no insanity there either because insanity,
18:41
you know, you would be sitting there having a cup of coffee when the police pulled up,
18:44
not knowing what you did.
18:46
He ran, he went to Taco Bell, he, you know, answered the phone and talked to some people,
18:53
went to his sisters and said he sold his soul for a truck, planned to get his dog so that
18:58
he could escape to Oklahoma.
19:01
This is not a guy who was not functioning mentally, right?
19:06
So, so for them to be saying those things just [inaudible] me off because people legitimately
19:12
do have PTS and they don't need to be seen that way, that they're potential murderer.
19:17
You know, we learned in the trial that his mom apparently, I think it was the fall, right?
19:25
So a few months before he killed Chris and Chad had all the guns removed from their house
19:30
because he threatened to kill himself and everyone else because his dad gave one of their guns
19:36
to somebody else in the family and he wanted it as an heirloom.
19:40
That was my understanding of trial and I was thinking, and yet my husband came, you were
19:45
crying in the line when my kids were going to school, or not crying, sorry, upset, asked
19:50
if, no, she did, she had tears in her eyes.
19:54
My husband goes back and asks you, does he like to shoot because he knows that that's
19:58
been a really relaxing way for people to just kind of have something to do so you don't
20:02
have to looking directly in each other's eyes while you bury your soul, right?
20:07
And you're outside and it's something you share in common and it kind of lends itself
20:11
to this, let's do something kind of atmosphere that's very healing and you're in nature and
20:17
Chris purposely chose someone somewhere beautiful, Rough Creek Lodge is just this gorgeous place
20:23
so that it would be really calming and nice.
20:26
So yes, does he like to shoot and you don't say, hey, listen, normally, yes, but right
20:32
now, you know, a couple months ago, we had the situation at home, is there something else
20:35
you could do with him?
20:36
I mean, right?
20:38
It's just the level of, yes, I mean, Chris could have done a million things with him.
20:43
So I look at this stuff and I think we're a product of our upbringing.
20:48
You know, it's just my opinion that she enabled this kid to, you know, to use excuses his
20:55
whole life and she was going to do the same thing to get whatever they wanted.
20:58
I don't know if she wanted her son connected with somebody that had this newfound fame
21:02
in the local town.
21:03
I don't know, all I know is he said he could get out of parking or a speeding ticket by
21:09
claiming PTS.
21:11
He figured he couldn't get a job in the world owed him because he served in the military
21:16
and had PTS.
21:18
So then his mom's friend gives him a job, right?
21:21
Well, he can't work that hard because sometimes he'll stare off into space sometimes but you
21:25
have to excuse him because he has PTS.
21:27
So he does this and even when you have a speeding ticket, if the police then would take him
21:33
to a mental health place because he says he's suffering from PTS or whatever because of
21:38
HIPAA laws, they can't tell the police when they release him saying something other than
21:43
psychosis, meaning usually that's what they write for drug use, like it's not a mental
21:47
issue that, you know, because of HIPAA laws, they can't tell the police that.
21:52
So he just starts to, in my opinion, feel invincible, right?
21:57
Like he's got an excuse for everything.
21:59
And when you look at the tapes, they played back in the murder trial.
22:04
They would show he was not aware, it looked like he was not aware that there was a camera
22:11
somewhere inside the vehicle.
22:13
So when police would come up to the door and he figured there were cameras, he would start
22:17
acting goofy, right?
22:19
And then when they would walk away, it's like he'd just get real chill in the seat and
22:23
like look at the ceiling, like, ugh, right?
22:26
So this is a manipulative, in my opinion, a manipulative person who I can say is a child
22:35
of God who started out, however he started in life, but the enabling, the excuses, in
22:41
my opinion, again, maybe it's not just that, right?
22:44
Maybe there are other things, but I think that can't have helped because the more he
22:47
got away with it, in my opinion, the more immune he gets to consequences.
22:53
Well, and the damage that he does to people that are actually struggling, that actually
22:59
have issues that they need to get past, it's a horrible thing because now he's categorically
23:05
somebody that used it to take advantage of other people, which is going to invariably
23:09
hurt people that really are struggling.
23:11
100%.
23:12
And that's a thing, I've said it in so many of my talks, and I try to make a point of
23:17
at least mentioning it because people who legitimately have PTSD need to not be afraid
23:22
to say, "Hey, listen, I'm going through something," and it's not going to last forever, and there
23:26
is help, and I'm not crazy.
23:29
I just need some tools to help get out of this, and he actually held his girlfriend at put
23:37
a sword to her throughout the week before too, but she didn't press charges, and that's
23:43
a whole other story, but again, somebody doesn't want to give this person a consequence, and
23:49
I think we're in danger a little bit, or maybe a lot, in society, of being sort of afraid
23:56
of consequences instead of, "No, there's a consequence, there's compassion, and we need
24:01
to have that, and there's a consequence, you can love someone and give them a consequence.
24:08
Why is that so hard to connect?"
24:10
Right, and I think that that's kind of a tough thing, and we'll move on past that subject
24:16
matter, but I think you gave a lot of context there for guys that you're not going to get
24:20
that in any book, and most people weren't paying attention that closely to the trial,
24:25
but it is rather unfortunate.
24:27
As a guy sitting on the sidelines, it's almost like I kind of wish the dude was nuts.
24:31
That would almost make it make more sense.
24:35
It's not going to take away the pain, it's not going to take away the hurt, but it's
24:38
going to decrease the amount of confusion, but again, before I ask another followup, we
24:42
got some other stuff to cover, and so we're going to take a slight detour to a very happy
24:45
subject.
24:46
Kyle, can I finish one more thing?
24:51
Yeah, absolutely.
24:52
He was a drug user, and I think that's the other thing that people need to know.
24:56
That stuff will jack you up, and we can act like the drugs aren't that bad and whatever,
25:00
but he did do that, and I think that's important also to realize, and the last thing I'll say
25:05
on it is just, even after the trial, Dr. Phil has the mom on the show talking about how
25:13
our son has PTSD, and I'm thinking, do your research, bro.
25:20
It just [inaudible] me off, because again, it continued this narrative that wasn't true, and once
25:24
it's out there, and people have said it over and over and over, we can't get it out of
25:27
our heads.
25:28
It doesn't matter, I mean, it does matter to some people when I say it, and I hope your
25:32
listeners will correct people, but it's so out there that stigma of PTSD is kind of a
25:39
done deal, and I think that's kind of how our society's rolling, too, but yes, happier
25:43
subject.
25:44
Well, and just even to put a bow on that, like that's a common media trick to where
25:48
it's like, okay, we're going to put out this thing that is 25% true, and then it'll go
25:54
across the world, and then we'll have to, you know, issue a correction, but that's like
25:58
a week later, and only like 10% of the people will actually see the correction.
26:02
So it's like, once the narrative gets out, it's hard to bottle it back up, so I completely
26:06
understand that, but there is a project that you've been working on, and that is come to
26:10
fruition.
26:11
And that really is something for you that kind of embodies the warrior spirit that Chris
26:16
displayed, but also what you and your family have had to display since he passed away.
26:20
And that's the warrior collections jewelry that have just been released here fairly recently.
26:25
And from the website, I want to read kind of the mission of what this is and have you
26:29
talk about a little bit further, but the mission of this line is to awaken the warrior spirit
26:33
and all people.
26:34
We aren't just living a life.
26:35
We are here on mission to make a difference for God.
26:39
Our life story is our mission lived out on Earth.
26:41
It's time to awaken the warrior within you.
26:44
And this is a line that's for men and for women, but I'll kind of, I'm not much of a
26:48
jewelry guy, so I don't really know what best question to ask, aside from, you know, why
26:51
go this route and why produce this type of a product for us.
26:54
Yes.
26:55
So thank you for asking that because it really is for a guy like you who's not really a jewelry
26:59
guy.
27:00
And that was.
27:01
Okay.
27:02
All right.
27:03
So I'm with you, you know, there's not a ton of jewelry that I think looks really sharp
27:08
on men.
27:09
There are some pieces that look cool.
27:12
And I was thinking, what do you wear to show like who you are that is cool and edgy and
27:19
badass and still something you can wear, right?
27:23
And so, you know, my son was the one who inspired me and Chris with his dog tags, I would carry
27:31
them around sometimes for that added tangible strength.
27:35
My son decided he wanted a cross and he wanted a big one.
27:37
He doesn't wear any jewelry.
27:39
He's not flashy.
27:40
He's just, you know, clean cut, super short hair, but he's, you know, he's an athlete,
27:43
a football player, you know, he leads some Bible studies at our house.
27:47
He's just an all around all American guy that people just don't mess with because he's
27:52
a straight shooter and kind, right?
27:54
He's got all of these things.
27:56
And so I think his straightforwardness is boldness is cool.
28:01
Well, he says to me at one time that he wants just a like a masculine chain kind of long
28:06
with like a big cross.
28:09
And I was thinking, wow, okay, that kind of surprised me and he said, why is that?
28:13
And he said, because this is, this is who I am and I want to be bold in showing it like
28:18
this, you know, and I went, yeah, that's really cool.
28:21
So our first line he to me made it look really, you know, just badass and cool.
28:27
And his other guy friends who are the same, they started wearing these.
28:32
So we made our first one was dog tags.
28:34
So it's a dog tag that has like a texture to it.
28:36
It's Montana Silversmith.
28:38
The logo is a backward B forward E in the middle where they connect as a cross that comes
28:45
down on the tip of a sword because, you know, for me, it's, there's the beginning and the
28:50
end, the alpha and the omega, the middle is our life and the sword represents like you're
28:54
a warrior.
28:55
You're a badass in this life, so like, you know, you can show that in a way that maybe
28:59
isn't the big cross, but it's still, you know, you're, it opens a conversation to people
29:05
ask about it and you get to say your faith.
29:08
And so that's where it started was that tag and those are, those have been a really good
29:13
seller.
29:14
They're also really nice solid silvers.
29:15
They're not super cheap, but they are an investment, right?
29:19
They're, they're kind of an heirloom piece.
29:20
So a lot of the guys I've noticed are, are getting those women can wear them too on longer
29:24
chains or whatever, but they're definitely the pieces to have more of a masculine feel
29:29
to it.
29:30
And we'll do some super feminine stuff later and, and with, we're working with JTV for
29:37
jewelry TV for some of that stuff, but this one that we sell on our website, they all
29:41
have a sentimental part to them and they're all supposed to be these tangible reminders
29:45
of, you know, who you are, whose you are, and, and it's like a bold way to display it.
29:51
So you can tell I'm super in love with it, but you know, it's, it's been a, it's been
29:55
a, I guess a leap of faith even to do it.
29:59
Yeah.
30:00
It sounds like a labor of love and then it's, it's worked out on the back end and I got
30:03
to be honest.
30:04
I, I'm going to have the link for you guys so you can check this out for yourselves and
30:07
for your ladies.
30:08
But I was having a conversation yesterday.
30:10
This is how small the world is that we live in.
30:11
I'm having a conversation with a guy who helped me, you know, schedule an interview with
30:15
some people and another podcast, you know, that kind of thing.
30:18
And I just mentioned in passing that you and I were going to be having this conversation
30:21
today.
30:22
And he goes, Kyle, you're not going to believe this, but I'm wearing a legend, forged, Chris
30:27
Kyle hoodie right now.
30:29
And I'm wearing that dog tag chain.
30:31
Like he was, he was sitting there wearing, I didn't know this guy.
30:33
I had never talked to him before.
30:35
And he's just like, you know, if you, if you talk to Taya tomorrow and you remember it,
30:40
just tell her that, you know, her, her husband's a hero of mine and that that's always going
30:44
to stick with me.
30:45
But that's kind of the small world.
30:46
And this guy from all I can gather, he's a tough dude, you know, he's a, he's a, he's
30:50
a forged legend, Chris Kyle wearing type of dude, right?
30:53
Like that's a type of guy.
30:54
But he also had the chain.
30:55
So, so there, there's your little commercial that you weren't expecting for the joy.
31:00
But guys, you will have that there in the links in the show notes.
31:03
So you can check that out.
31:04
But I would, I'm going to get killed by all my friends if we don't get into kind of talking
31:07
about your books, but also the American sniper movie.
31:10
So one of the things about biopics that is fairly common, unfortunately, is that they
31:16
tend to kind of miss the mark or disappoint people whose lives are being portrayed in
31:21
the film.
31:22
And so from my perspective, not knowing Chris, not knowing you, I thought it hit the mark
31:26
because I left the movie thinking that was a great movie, right?
31:29
You know, I'm wiping tears away at, you know, as the credits are all in type of a thing.
31:33
But from your perspective, and you can kind of describe the process, do you feel like Clint
31:37
Clint Eastwood and the team, you know, hit the mark?
31:41
And you know, what was the process of getting the film made like for you, especially considering
31:45
it was released after Chris's murder?
31:47
As you mentioned, the rough draft came in the day before, you know, kind of what was
31:50
all that like.
31:51
Yeah, it was really, it was, you know, a different kind of experience.
31:55
And when we went in, so I didn't go on set at all and we didn't talk about that last
32:04
time, did we?
32:05
Nope.
32:06
No, we did not.
32:07
Yeah.
32:08
So my understanding is it's a little bit difficult to sort of embody the real characters and
32:13
then have the actual real character in front of you, it sort of takes you out of your head
32:16
space of becoming that person.
32:18
And so I respectfully didn't go and they Bradley called and said, would you, you know, would
32:25
you like to come for the last day of shooting?
32:27
We'd really love to have you there and it'd be like a nice way to close it up.
32:31
And I said, well, you know, when is it?
32:32
And when he told me the date, I was like, you know, I can't, my son has the second grade
32:38
spelling bee.
32:39
And he won his class, which means he's in the competition for the grade and, you know,
32:46
so yeah.
32:48
And they were like, you know, like, okay, but, you know, I think death does that too,
32:55
too, where you're like, I'm not going to miss anything that I have the opportunity to
32:59
be there for with my kids.
33:00
And he ended up winning the grade spelling bee.
33:02
Thank you very much.
33:03
Amazing.
33:04
Yeah.
33:05
So super fun, right?
33:06
That's a memory.
33:07
I can't get back.
33:08
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:09
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:10
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:11
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:12
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:13
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:14
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:15
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:16
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:17
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:18
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:19
I'm not sure if you can get back.

I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:51
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:52
I'm not sure if you can get back.
33:53
I'm not sure if you can get back.

I'm sure if you can get back.
49:13
I'm sure if you can get back.
49:14
I'm sure if you can get back.
49:15
I'm sure if you can get back.
49:26
I felt really just run down.
49:28
Jim, deeply, he said, "Taya, if you just talk to me
49:35
and I'll take care of the rest."
49:37
I emotionally vomited on the man for months.
49:43
It was one of those pacing back and forth in the yard,
49:46
chain smoking cigarettes and talking.
49:48
Sometimes it would be an hour or two into the conversation
49:51
and he'd be like, "Hey, Taya, as your friend,
49:54
this is good stuff, but I'm going to stop you here."
49:56
It's too much because it was gut wrenching.
50:02
Just the memories of the good things were hard.
50:06
There are times hopefully readers are laughing with the book
50:09
and there's some relief and there's good stuff,
50:11
but for me, even the good stuff made me cry because it was good
50:14
and it was gone.
50:16
It was a tough one to do, but I'm really glad that it's done.
50:22
I would have liked to have maybe written it myself,
50:25
but it still wouldn't be done if I tried to do that
50:28
because I tend to always put more on my plate.
50:30
Jim is a phenomenal writer and it is me.
50:33
It's all good.
50:35
I was glad that they pushed me, I think, in the end
50:39
to try to get it out.
50:40
When you got the story out there for people to attach themselves
50:43
to, and again, that's the thing I would want to reiterate
50:46
from what you said.
50:47
This is not just a book for military wives.
50:49
Obviously, I think the name, you went American sniper,
50:52
American wife.
50:53
It all makes sense in terms of the branding of it all,
50:56
but it does get people a different side of the story
50:59
because you hear the side of the story from the movie,
51:01
you hear the side of the story from Chris's memoir,
51:03
but you can also see it from your side.
51:05
From a very macro perspective,
51:08
you're seeing all sides of the same issue,
51:11
which is giving you better context and giving you better ideas
51:14
to what really went on.
51:15
Totally.
51:16
And I think there's so much that resonates for people
51:19
in all different walks of life because we all struggle.
51:22
It's not like, you know, our story was just, you know,
51:27
oh, we all struggle.
51:28
So, yes, we had this story.
51:29
This was our story, but in many ways, I hope,
51:32
and what I've heard is it's many people's story.
51:36
And that's the only real value to doing these,
51:38
is if it helps somebody else, right?
51:40
So if it helps other people to know A, they're not alone,
51:44
but B, it gets better, you know?
51:47
And I don't know what C is.
51:49
I should have started with one and two.
51:50
That's okay.
51:51
It works out really well.
51:52
But the thing about it is,
51:53
it attaches to something you said in our first talk today,
51:55
and that was basically you have people that, you know,
51:58
as soon as you become the focal point of a best-selling book
52:02
or of a movie, all of a sudden you're not normal.
52:04
But you were just like from the very top,
52:06
like Chris and I were just normal people.
52:08
Like, you know, he was just a Texan.
52:10
He was just a normal guy.
52:11
Like, and that was the thing for a lot of these people
52:13
is when they read his book, when they read your book.
52:16
It's like, okay, these are just people.
52:18
Like, these are my people.
52:20
And I think that actually segues nicely
52:22
into the next book that you wrote called American Spirit,
52:24
Profiles in Resilience, Courage and Faith.
52:27
And so this book profiles, you know, around 30 folks,
52:30
and those are folks that, and I'll read from the description now,
52:33
that embody the American spirit of resilience,
52:36
faith, and togetherness that has built the nation.
52:39
And obviously we talk about cultivating spiritual,
52:41
mental and physical resilience all the time.
52:43
But what was the idea or the goal for you behind writing
52:46
another book, but this one profiling other great Americans?
52:50
Well, you know, I was traveling the country working,
52:52
and people would be telling me their stories.
52:55
And I just was so moved by them, I was so encouraged by them.
52:59
And I thought, there's a lot of grit in this country.
53:02
There are a lot of people who, you know,
53:05
their name is not in lights, and they're changing the world.
53:08
And they've gone through hardship,
53:10
and they've turned it into something incredible.
53:13
And so I just kept feeling like,
53:15
I can't just keep this to myself.
53:17
I almost felt selfish to keep it to myself.
53:19
And so I was talking to the publisher, and I'm like,
53:22
look, I know that good news doesn't sell.
53:24
I realize that.
53:25
But if this, you know, but if this can help even one person,
53:29
you know, I want to get this out there.
53:32
And, you know, it has done good, and I have heard from people,
53:37
and there's been a couple that it has impacted greatly.
53:40
So that's good enough for me.
53:43
The professional side of me and the business side of me is like,
53:46
man, I wish it would have just flown off the shelves.
53:48
But I knew it wouldn't go in.
53:50
I knew that it would be for people who either are inspired by the same,
53:56
who want to be encouraged that this country is not as bad as we think it is,
54:01
and who maybe want ideas too.
54:03
Like they're people doing wild mustangs in Montana for veterans.
54:08
They're training them.
54:10
And it's just such a cool story that maybe still started out there
54:13
to a guy in San Diego who's solving the homeless problem
54:17
by retraining these people, like giving them two years to live there and work
54:22
and not just like a meal, but, you know, this whole new life,
54:28
but it takes time and it takes the private sector.
54:30
And for me, it's like, why is every city in the country not following this model?
54:35
Like this works.
54:36
Why do we want to just put a Band-Aid on it when we can give people their lives back?
54:40
So I hope more and more people will just do it for an awareness perspective
54:45
that there are ways that we can do better in this country
54:49
that are not dependent on the government.
54:51
Well, I know that good news doesn't sell and if it bleeds, it leads.
54:55
But it's a book like that that is refreshing.
54:57
And they're kind of in bite-sized chunks, so you can take down a story at a time,
55:01
read a story a day type of thing.
55:02
Totally.
55:03
But it's those inspiring moments.
55:05
Like just the other day, I re-watch Gladiator, my favorite movie.
55:08
Just a week or two ago, I re-watched American Sniper,
55:10
and you leave that movie with a sense of duty, a sense of direction,
55:15
and like a sense of inspiration, even regardless of how, you know,
55:18
both of those movies, you know, you have the main character that passes away.
55:21
But at the same time, you're finding something positive even in a situation that seems dire.
55:26
And the same thing with what you described for that guy on San Diego.
55:29
Like those are situations that are tough for a lot of people to deal with,
55:32
but they're getting in there trying to make a difference and change things up.
55:35
So I really appreciate that you put that book out there.
55:38
But as we wind down to the end of our chat for today,
55:41
I like to do something with a lot of our guests and it is kind of a lightning round of questions.
55:45
It's called, what would you say to someone that said?
55:48
And so I'm going to say that and then I'm going to finish the sentence.
55:51
But here's the thing.
55:52
You have 30 seconds max, regardless of what you want to say about it.
55:56
You have 30 seconds to give us the meat and potatoes about what you think about that issue.
56:01
So are you up for it?
56:02
Yeah, it's just going to be one question or multiple.
56:04
I'm going to ask you multiple questions.
56:06
What would you say to someone that said and we're just going to go like one right after the other?
56:10
And all the questions fit within 30 seconds or every answer.
56:13
Okay, got it.
56:14
We get 30 seconds per question.
56:16
All right, you know, if you don't get like four seconds per question, you get 30 seconds and that's it for each question.
56:22
You with it?
56:23
I'm with it.
56:24
All right, here we go.
56:25
What would you say to someone that said the US government isn't doing enough for veterans and gold star families?
56:31
I would say the healthcare is the main issue and we need to get private healthcare.
56:36
Just provide them insurance and let them get their own healthcare somewhere else.
56:39
And then I think that would be a far cry from what we have and it would help.
56:44
All right, next question here.
56:46
What would you say to someone that said, I don't want my children to go into the military?
56:51
I understand.
56:52
And I think the biggest type of courage we can have as parents is to know that God is their ultimate parent and that God will guide them and lead them.
57:00
So teach them how to pray, teach them how to listen to God, how to find that.
57:04
When God's talking, it's peaceful.
57:05
There's no fear.
57:06
There's no confusion.
57:07
And if God's leading them, I think that our job as parents is to support and help prepare them for wherever God is leading.
57:13
See, you're doing a great job.
57:14
I didn't even have to really prep you for it here.
57:16
Let's keep going.
57:17
What would you say to someone that said the United States should have never gotten involved in Iraq or Afghanistan?
57:23
I totally understand that.
57:25
And I think when you see destruction, it's hard not to think we shouldn't have done it.
57:28
The problem is I believe it's a cancer there with terrorism.
57:32
It's not about one country or another.
57:33
It's terrorists across the board.
57:35
It's like a cancer and we can't get rid of the cancer entirely, but we have to keep cutting it back or it grows.
57:42
All right.
57:43
Next one here.
57:44
What would you say to someone that said the United States is going in the wrong direction as a country?
57:50
I think it's interesting because I think people on all sides of the political spectrum feel that way.
57:55
And we have to be prepared to stand up and teach our children most of all at home what our own beliefs are and why and ask them to question everything because it's going to be up to the next generation to not just fall for rhetoric.
58:11
And we have to do that by teaching at home, not school.
58:15
That's great.
58:16
Next one here.
58:17
What would you say to someone that said, I'm not sure I will ever get over losing my loved one?
58:22
I think that's an understandable statement.
58:25
I think that are one of the best things we can do is to live with joy and gratitude.
58:29
I think that makes us most resilient to evil and the devil is to have joy in God.
58:34
And so my thing is that we have to compartmentalize it.
58:42
We don't have to expect that it ever goes totally away, but compartmentalize it so it doesn't steal your joy every day.
58:45
All right.
58:46
Just a few left.
58:47
What would you say to someone that said, I am proud to be an American?
58:52
I understand.
58:53
And I think it's great.
58:54
And I think we do have the best country in the world and we need to find a way to preserve what makes us great and be careful not to change it so much that we don't recognize it.
59:03
We don't recognize what made us great in the first place.
59:05
All right.
59:06
What would you say to someone that said, you are an inspiration?
59:10
I would say thank you.
59:12
I appreciate it.
59:13
It makes me feel good to help people.
59:15
And I hope that I can do things to make the world a better place or just make life easier for people.
59:21
And I would say that really all the glory is to God because I prayed him to use me.
59:26
And so if there's something good coming out of it, it has to be for him.
59:30
Well, you certainly are an inspiration to a lot of us, myself included.
59:33
Last question of the day, what would you say to someone that said, the Kyle family legacy will be one of honor, duty, patriotism and resilience.
59:43
I would just say thank you.
59:45
I just thank you.
59:47
I appreciate that night.
59:48
It's the best we can ask for.
59:51
All right.
59:52
Well, Taya, we spanned it over to conversations, but I think it turned out really, really well, but that is officially all for me.
59:58
Is there anything else you want to get off your chest?
1:00:00
No, I just think it's so cool that you are having a podcast.
1:00:03
Number one, like I told you, I think you're so good at this.
1:00:06
And I think it's cool that you're able to provide a platform where guys who are faithful and can still be rugged and men and come to be inspired.
1:00:19
I just, I love the concept of your show.
1:00:21
I think it's awesome.
1:00:22
We appreciate it.
1:00:23
Taya Kyle, thanks again for coming on Undaunted Life, a man's podcast.
1:00:28
Thank you.
1:00:29
All right, guys, there you go.
1:00:34
That wraps up our two part series, our two part interview that we did with Taya Kyle.
1:00:38
And again, just listening through that episode, even when I was editing the episode together, I was just so happy with how everything turned out.
1:00:45
Because again, you never know how interview is going to go, you never know if they're going to be interesting to talk to, you never know if they're going to hold back.
1:00:52
And I was just so thrilled that she was able to go into the subject matters that she did with strength, with resilience, with intellect and man.
1:00:59
I'm just, I'm on cloud nine.
1:01:00
I thought that this went really, really well.
1:01:02
I know that when I told a lot of you guys that we were going to have Taya Kyle on the podcast that you had high expectations.
1:01:08
So I certainly hope that we met and exceeded those expectations.
1:01:11
But before we let you guys go, we are going to do a quick resilience boost.
